BARNESVILLE -- Hazel Phillips, 90, of Barnesville, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, in the Monroe County Care Center, Woodsfield.
She was the mother and mother-in-law of Pearl and Jesse Phillips of Apple Creek.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Jerusalem United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Jerusalem Cemetery.
Friends may call today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Harper Funeral Home in Beallsville and from 10 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the church. Eastern Star services will be Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Jerusalem United Methodist Church or to the Guernsey-Monroe Hospice.
She was born June 1, 1910, in Belmont County, to Emmett and Eliza (Love) Davis and married Kenneth Phillips. He died previously.
Surviving in addition to her daughter and son-in-law are two sons, Robert of Jerusalem and Kenneth of Beallsville; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

John Norris
ASHLAND -- John Paul Norris, 88, formerly of 75 Harold Drive, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 21, 2001, at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.
Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Grace Brethren Church in Ashland with Pastor Dan Allan and Pastor Norm Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Red Haw Cemetery where the Ashland County Joint Veterans Council will conduct full military graveside services.
Friends may call today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 6-8 at Denbow-Primm-Kemery Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Grace Brethren Church, 1144 W. Main St., Ashland 44805 or to Good Shepherd Foundation, 622 Center St., Ashland 44805.
He was born Dec. 10, 1912, in Paradise Hill, and was the son of Samuel E. and Bessie May (Evert) Norris.
He was married June 26, 1937, to Grace Lucille Schmid, who survives him. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Jeff Owens of Mansfield; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Sue Norris of Ashland; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Alice Norris of Ashland.

Evalyn Nickel
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Evalyn M. Nickel, 87, of Phoenix, Ariz. and formerly of Vandalia, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in Phoenix, Ariz.
Services were held Jan. 19 in Vandalia at St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Tipp City.
She was born Jan. 23, 1913, in Wayne County, to George M. and Della (Acker) Starr and married Virgil H. Nickel. He died Aug. 14, 1988.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Van Gundy; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, all of Phoenix, Ariz., and a brother, George W. Starr of Orrville.

Duane Kirkendall
POTTER COUNTY, Pa. -- Duane Kirkendall, 42, of Potter County, Pa., died Friday, Jan. 12, 200,1 in Potter County, Pa.
Memorial services will be Saturday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 276 E. Bagley Road, Berea.
He was born July 8, 1958, in Middleburg Heights, to Virgil and Mary Ellen (Kuntz) Kirkendall.
Surviving are his parents, Mary Ellen Kirkendall of Berea and Virgil Kirkendall of Pennsylvania; two brothers, Van Kirkendall of Berea and Gregory Kirkendall of Potter County, Pa. and many aunts, uncles and cousins in the Wooster area.

Lucy Effron
ST. CLOUD, Fla. -- Lucy B. Effron, 74, 4215 Hamilton Court, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at her residence.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, Wooster, with the Rev. Jim Collier and Father Paul Wysocki officiating. Burial will be at Wooster Cemetery.
Friends may call Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Comforter, 595 Montgomery Road, Altamonte Springs, Fla. 32714.
She was born in Wooster to Harry and Eva Kauffman.
Surviving are her husband, Robert Effron; two sons, Tom Wertenberger of Dillsboro, N.C. and Gary Wertenberger of Orrville; stepson, Jim Effron of Big Bear City, Calif.; stepdaughter, Deb Effron Cusick of Placentia, Calif.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her mother of Wooster; two sisters, Jane Laubach of Houston, Texas; Virginia Fath of Wooster and a brother, John Kauffman of Dunwoody, Ga.

Emma Christie
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Emma Perkins Christie, 89, recently of Knoxville, Tenn., fell asleep on Jan. 11, 2001, and is awaiting the return of Jesus Christ.
She was born in Wooster.
In 1955, after marriage to widower Ward E. Christie (predeceased 1989) in Columbus, she devoted herself to raising his daughter, Joanne Christie (Vermillion, survivor).
Survived by sister, Rebecca Moore of Streetsboro, sisters-in-law, Madalene Perkins of Grand Rapids, Mich. and Elizabeth Christie of Irvine, Calif. and 18 nieces and nephews.
Emma donated her body to science. There will be a recognition service held in Knoxville by The Way of Tenn.

Jared Green
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Jared Michael Green, 5, 5830 Waters Edge Drive, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Cape Fear Hospital in Fayetteville, N.C.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wooster, for family members on Jan. 20. Father John Mueller celebrated the Mass and Rev. Fred Clogg, great-uncle, assisted with the committal service at St. Mary Cemetery, Wooster.
Memorials may be made to the Jared Green Memorial Fund, in care of any First Citizens Bank in Fayetteville, N.C. in his memory.
Arrangements were handled by McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, Wooster, assisted by Professional Mortuary Service, Durham, N.C.
He was born Nov. 14, 1995, in Tacoma, Wash., to Michael E. and Jane Elizabeth (Opatrny) Green.
Surviving are his father of Fayetteville, N.C.; his mother of Missoula, Mont.; a brother, Marshall of Fayetteville, N.C.; maternal grandparents, Jim and Beth Opatrny of Wooster; paternal grandmother, Sandra Green of Oregon; paternal grandfather, Rick Green of California and maternal great-grandmother, Bernice Buchholz of Wooster.

Anna Blough
STERLING -- Anna J. Blough, 88, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at the Apostolic Christian Home.
Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Rittman Apostolic Christian Church. Ministers of the church will officiate with burial in the Apostolic Church Cemetery.
Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at Gillman Funeral Home in Rittman and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born Jan. 5, 1913, at Sterling, to Simon and Elizabeth (Maibach) Ramsier.
Surviving are sons, Terry Blough of Wadsworth, Ben Blough of Naples, Fla., Joseph Blough of Akron, and Elmer Blough of Smithville; a daughter, Dorothy Carter of Akron; a sister Esther Saurer of Rittman; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Messmore
WOOSTER -- Elizabeth "Betty" Messmore, 70, of Messner Road, died Monday evening, Jan. 22, 2001, at Smithville-Western Care Center, after a long illness.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home with the Rev. William Valentine officiating. Burial will be at Wooster Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Those who wish may contribute to Wooster Township Fire and Rescue, 1917 Millersburg Road, Wooster 44691 or to Wayne County Fire and Rescue Training Center, in care of Jim Shriver, 2367 Springville Road, Wooster 44691, in her memory.
She was born Sept. 23, 1930, in Wooster, to Ralph and Nellie Irene (Jolliff) Parker.
Surviving are her husband, Milo D. Messmore, whom she married July 15, 1960; children and their spouses, Stephen and Diane Snyder of Wooster, Daniel and Denise Snyder of Wooster, Pat and Charles Doyle of Wooster and Laura Jean Messmore of Wooster; seven grandchildren, Cindy Humrichouser, Chris Snyder, Mindy Hay, Mark Snyder, Stephen Snyder, Joseph Doyle and Nicholas Snyder; four great-grandchildren, Christina Richards, Donny Hay, Brandon Richards and Jonathan Snyder; brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Bonnie Parker of Wooster; brother-in-law, Calvin Fravel of Wooster and nieces and nephews, John and Bob Fravel, Marcia Edwards, Nancy White and Cindy Thompson.

Mary Conrad
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Mary Freda Conrad, 89, formerly of Wooster and Columbus, died peacefully on Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, in Glendale, Ariz.
Inurnment will be Saturday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m. at East Lawn Cemetery, Tucson, Ariz.
Memorial contributions may be made to University of Arizona Cancer Center, P.O. Box 245013, Tucson, Ariz. 85724.
Mary was born March 6, 1911, in the Smithville area, to Charles and Blanche (Snyder) Batdorf and married Ward E. Conrad in 1930.
Survivors include sons, Charles (Louise) of Tucson, Ariz., Richard (Stella) of Mobile, Ala., Robert (Sue) of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Miles (Janice) Batdorf of Canal Fulton; brother-in-law, Frank (Thelma) Conrad of Baton Rouge, La.; three grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.

Eugene Gillespie
KINGMAN, Ariz. -- Eugene E. Gillespie, of Kingman, Ariz., died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, from a bullet wound to the head.
Private services were held Tuesday, Jan. 16, in Kingman, Ariz. Cremation will follow at a later date.
Contributions may be given to a charity of the donor's choice.
He was born Dec. 12, 1970, to Eugene T. and Frances L. Gillespie.
Surviving are a daughter, Madison Gillespie of Kingman, Ariz.; his parents of Golden Valley, Ariz.; sisters, Ronda L. Gillespie-Frame-Martinez and Annette G. Gillespie-Lind, both of Golden Valley, Ariz., and Rene S. Gillespie-Reidenbach of Wooster; four nieces; four nephews; and his ex-wives, Tara Gillespie of Kingman, Ariz., and Vicki Gillespie of Wooster.

Robert Anderson
WOOSTER -- Robert E. "Smokey" Anderson, 76, of Hiner Road, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Heritage Park Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, after a lengthy illness.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Fredericksburg, with the Rev. Hope Eberly officiating. Burial will be at Blachleyville Cemetery.
Friends may call Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 225 W. Exchange St., Akron 44302.
He was born March 28, 1924, in Wadsworth, to Clare and Bessie Anderson and married Carol Weahry on Dec. 23, 1976. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Bobbi Jo Mackey of Wooster; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother Bessie Fry of Wadsworth; a brother, Harold Anderson of Amherst; half-brothers, Jack and Jim Fry, both of Wadsworth; and a half-sister, Betty Wilcox of Rittman.

Donald Lerch Jr.
CLINTON -- Donald C. Lerch Jr., 52, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Hospice Care Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Sts. Philip & James Catholic Church in Canal Fulton. Fr. John Lody will be celebrant. Procession will form at the church. Burial will be at church cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Zak-Monbarren Funeral Home in Doylestown.

He was born July 9, 1948, in Massillon, to Donald C. and Minta (Day) Lerch Sr. and married Pamela Board on Aug. 16, 1980. She survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are sons, Donald W. (Jill) Lerch of Barberton; Ryan P. Lerch of Clinton; two grandchildren; his mother, Lois Lerch Poling of Maple, N.C., and a sister Minta Jean Davis of Grandy, N.C.

Dale Musselman
APPLE CREEK -- Dale W. Musselman, 90, 51 Grange St., died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home.
Graveside services will be Friday at 3 p.m. at East Union Cemetery with the Rev. George Swartzfager officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Those who wish may make memorial contributions to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 777 S. Summit St., Smithville 44677, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Arrangements are being handled by McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home.
He was born June 23, 1910, in Wayne County, to Levi H. and Sarah (Wilson) Musselman and married Frances M. Bresson on Aug. 6, 1931. She died Sept. 16, 1998.
Surviving are a daughter, Sally Humrichouser of Apple Creek; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary L. and Nancy J. Musselman of Massillon; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Rafeld
ASHLAND -- Evelyn Janet (Whisler) Rafeld, 83, of Ashland, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 24, 2001, at Good Shepherd Home.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church with Pastor Thomas Snyder officiating. Burial will be at Chestnut Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at Van Hove Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 1140 Claremont Ave., Ashland 44805.
She was born June 3, 1917, in Ashland, to Samuel Albert and Edith (Ohl) Whisler and married James J. Rafeld on June 3, 1939. He died Dec. 4, 1994.
Surviving are three daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia Malaska of Greenville, S.C., Karen Rafeld of Boston, Mass., and Sharon and Lloyd Aten of Akron; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Frederick and Judith Rafeld of Ashland, Marvin and Judy Rafeld of Loudonville, Blake and Chris Rafeld of Columbus and Darryl Rafeld of Mansfield; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and a brother and sister-in-law, Marshall and June Whisler of Medina.

J. Robert McConnell
ASHLAND -- J. Robert McConnell, 79, 1269 Township Road 653, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 23, 2001, at Brethren Care Nursing Home in Ashland.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church with Pastor Sanford Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Ashland County Memorial Park.
Friends may call two hours prior to time of services at the church on Saturday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Valley Church or the Brethren Care Village.
Fickes Funeral Home in Jeromesville is in charge of arrangements.
He was born Dec. 20, 1921, in Ashland County, to Ray and Carrie (Shutt) McConnell and married Martha Kline on Sept. 14, 1947. She survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons and a daughter-in-law, David McConnell of Chicago, Ronald McConnell and Larry and Cindy McConnell, all of Ashland; six grandchildren and a sister, Viola Ogden of Ashland.

Abbie Weaver
SARASOTA, Fla. -- Abbie Lena Weaver, 93, of Sarasota, Fla., and formerly of Township Road 414, Dundee, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, following an extended illness.
Services will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at the David J. Troyer residence, 3966 Township Road 414, Dundee, with Bishop Raymond Weaver officiating. Burial will be at Weaver Cemetery, Berlin Township.
Friends may call anytime Friday at the residence.
Arrangements are being handled by Butler-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek.
She was born Nov. 24, 1907, in Bloomfield, Mont., to Enos and Sarah (Yoder) Yoder and married John E. Weaver on Dec. 22, 1931. He died July 3, 1989.
Surviving are a son, Eli J. (Mary) Weaver of Millersburg; three daughters, Mrs. David J. (Esther) Troyer of Dundee, Mrs. Jonas J. (Sarah) Miller of Chesapeake, Va., and Malinda Miller of Sarasota, Fla.; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Samuel Rose
NEW PARIS, Pa. -- Samuel L. Rose, 47, 215 Taylor Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Altoona Hospital, Altoona, Pa.
Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Mickle-Geisel Funeral Home, Schellsburg, Pa., with the Rev. Floyd Rinehart officiating. Burial will be at Bedford County Memorial Park in Bedford, Pa.
Friends may call today (Thursday) from 2-4 and 7-9 at the funeral home.
He was born Feb. 17, 1953, in Snake Spring Township, Bedford County, Pa., to Dempsey L. and Ruth E. (Replogle) Rose, and married Beverly K. Ressler, formerly of Orrville, on Sept. 22, 1984. She survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Trisha K. Rose and Stephanie L. Rose, both of the home; his mother of Middleburg, Fla.; a sister, Kathy Hancock of Baldwin, Fla. and a brother, John W. Rose, of Fishertown, Pa.

Max Hammond Sr.
WOOSTER -- Max Dean Hammond Sr., 83, 1603 Ruth Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Wooster Community Hospital, following a period of declining health.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Ripley Church of Christ with the Rev. Ralph Eichelberger officiating. Burial will be at Ripley Church Cemetery.
Friends may call tonight (Thursday) from 7-9 at Schlabach Funeral Home, Shreve, and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
Family suggests memorial contributions be made to Ripley Church of Christ, 12298 County Road 330, Big Prairie 44611.
He was born Oct. 27, 1917, in Lodi, Mich., to Norton A. and Rennie (Crow) Hammond and married Mabel Willhite on April 4, 1942. She survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 58 years, are a son, Dean (Becky) Hammond of Cincinnati and daughters, Lawanda (Ed) Harnish of Alliance and Pam (Jerry) Kelly of Shreve; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Shelby Reed
BURBANK -- Shelby Reed, born Shelby Jean McElhaney, July 7, 1941, in South Webster, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, in Jacksonville, Florida, after a prolonged illness.
Services will be Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in Burbank with the Rev. Melvin Browning officiating. Burial will be at Burbank Cemetery.
Friends may call Monday from 6:30-8 p.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Creston.
She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Bert Reed of Burbank; a daughter, Sherrie Kaye Long (Doug) of Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, Timothy (Tina) of Burbank; three cherished grandchildren, Timmy and Skyler Reed and Lacey Long; a sister, Carolyn (Pete) Schorle of Keystone Heights, Fla. and a brother, Jerry (Angela) of Middleburg, Fla.
