Robert Gaus
WOOSTER -- Robert Louis Gaus, 77, 4506 Hunters Chase Lane, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at his winter home in Leesburg, Fla.
Memorial services will be Friday, May 17, at 12:30 p.m. at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home in Wooster. Burial of the cremains will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.
He was born in Conneaut.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Ollie M. Gaus; children Dr. Paul L. (Madonna) Gaus of Wooster, Kathryn L. Chapman of Montgomery, Ala., and Timothy L. Gaus of Orlando, Fla.; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Nancy Lee, of Brecksville.

Albert Erb
MILLERSBURG -- Albert D. Erb, 76, 5237 state Route 515, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at his home after an extended illness.
Services will be Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the residence, with Bishop Henry D. Miller officiating. Burial will be at the Yoder-Erb Cemetery, Walnut Creek Township, Holmes County.
Friends may call anytime at the residence. Butler-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek is handling arrangements.
He was born May 5, 1925, in Holmes County to David M. and Lydia (Miller) Erb and married Ella E. Yoder on Dec. 16, 1948. She died July 14, 1998.
Surviving are children Ben A. (Fannie) Erb of New Philadelphia; Emanuel A. (Edna) Erb of Conneautville, Pa.; Sam A. (Miriam) Erb of the home; Albert (Anna) Erb Jr. of Sugarcreek; Leroy A. (Katie) Erb of Dundee; Fannie (Emanuel Jr.) Mast, Katie (Alvin H.) Yoder and Elsie (David W.) Miller, all of Millersburg; Esther (Harvey P.) Raber of Danville; and Lizzie (Wyman J.) Troyer of Fresno; 60 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brothers Joe D. and Sam D. Erb, both of Charm; and a sister, Lizzie (Noah L.) Raber, of Millersburg.

Estella Overholt
NORTH PORT, Fla. -- Estella G. "Dottie" Overholt, 64, of North Port, Fla., formerly of Wooster, died Monday, March 11, 2002, from pulmonary fibrosis.
There will be no services. National Cremation Society in Port Charlotte, Fla., handled arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
She was born April 19, 1937, in Coshocton to Shelby and Grace (Dry) Bible.
Surviving are her husband, Emerson Overholt, and sisters Mary Snader of Apple Creek and Jackie Hunter of Vincent.

Joshua Canada
WEST SALEM -- Joshua S. Canada, 22, of West Salem, formerly of Mountain Home, Ark., died Friday, March 29, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem, with pastor Robert Holmes officiating. Burial will be at Congress Cemetery.
Friends may call Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was born May 30, 1979, in Oberlin to Douglas and Cynthia (Baker) Canada.
Surviving are his parents of West Salem; a brother, Justin, of the home; maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Milton Baker and paternal grandmother Shirley Canada, all of Oberlin; and maternal great-grandmother, Clara Baker, of Norwalk.

Jerry Branham
WEST SALEM -- Jerry W. Branham, 22, of West Salem, died Friday morning, March 29, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem, with pastor James Estep officiating. Burial will be at West Salem Cemetery.
Friends may call tonight (Sunday) from 7-9 at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to Matteson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 314, West Salem 44287, to help defray funeral expenses.
He was born Dec. 19, 1979, in Medina to James and Mary (Hickman) Branham.
Surviving are his father of West Salem; his mother and stepfather, Mary and Nick Petrishin, of Lodi; a brother, Joseph Branham, of West Salem; a sister, Elizabeth Branham, of California; maternal grandparents Arlis and Gracie Hickman of Kentucky; and paternal grandparents James H. and Geneviva Branham of West Salem.

Ronald Bowman
BURBANK -- Ronald A. Bowman, 70, of Burbank, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at his home.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem, with Brad Thompson and Dick Kissler officiating. Burial with military services will be at Congress Cemetery.
Friends may call one hour prior to the services.
He was born Feb. 2, 1932, in Wayne County to Charles and Emma (Craven) Bowman and married Mary Thornton on Sept. 12, 1958. She survives.
Other survivors include children John (Deb) Bowman of Burbank, Ronald Bowman of West Salem, Lois Bowman Deweese of Rittman and Rick Brian and Fred (Denise) Brian, both of Wooster; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lucille Crow, of Millersburg.

Junior McCartney
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Junior McCartney, 68, 5810 W. Rocking Circle, Tucson, Ariz. 85713, formerly of Wooster, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, after a sudden illness.
Memorial services will be Tuesday, March 4, at Ajo Mission Baptist Church in Tucson. Internment will be at South Lawn Cemetery in Tucson.
Friends may call Monday, March 3, from 6-9 p.m. at South Lawn Funeral Home in Tucson.
He was born Nov. 11, 1934, in Morgantown, W.Va., the son of Okey and Lona McCartney.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and was a security guard at Newell Rubbermaid in Wooster for many years. He was chief of police in Apple Creek, for approximately 3-4 years and also had worked as a police deputy in Clinton.
Surviving are his wife, Glola McCartney; children, David and Rick McCartney, both of Wooster, and Nanetta Chapman of Dawsonville, Ga.; stepchildren, Joyce King and Roger Myers, both of Wooster and Charlene Klein of Polk; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
His parents died previously.

Sue Miller
PLAIN CITY -- Sue Miller, 88, of Plain City, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Doctor's West Hospital.
She was the mother and mother-in-law of Harvey and Miriam Miller and Sam and Karen Troyer, both of Berlin.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at United Bethel Mennonite Church, 11342 Lafayette-Plain City Road, Plain City. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the church.
Arrangements are being handled by Ferguson Funeral Home, 202 E. Main St., Plain City.
She was born Dec. 1, 1914, in Yoder, Kan., to Reuben S. and Susan J. Schrock and married Samuel D. Troyer on Jan. 28, 1937. He died Dec. 3, 1941. On May 6, 1945, she married Jonas J. Miller. He died Jan. 20, 1992.
She was a homemaker and the former owner/operator of Miller's Kountry Kitchen in Plain City. She was a founding member of the United Bethel Mennonite Church in Plain City.
Other survivors include children, Andrew (Loretta) Miller of Tennessee, Maynard Troyer of New York, John Miller of Florida, Toby (Sara) Miller and Esther (Danny) Kelley, both of Plain City and Verna (Ervin) Chupp of Illinois; 22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husbands, four children, four sisters and seven brothers died previously.

Kenneth Ries
RITTMAN -- Kenneth E. "Kenny" Ries, 55, of Rittman, passed away quietly Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital, after a long and courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
Services to celebrate Kenny's life will be Monday, March 3, at 11 a.m. at Hilliard & Mullaney Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St., Wadsworth, with the Rev. Ann Paynter officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Medina County, 797 N. Court St., Medina 44256.
The family encourages anyone suffering from acid reflux disease to seek treatment with a gastroenterologist.
A Wadsworth native, class of 1967, Kenny resided in Rittman for the past 33 years. He graduated from Hower Trade School in Akron, where he became a patternmaker and served the tire industry for more than 30 years, the last 25 as president and co-owner of the Universal Model Co. in Sharon Center. He also served as secretary of the Sharon Corporate Park for many years.
Kenny was an avid outdoorsman, naturalist and gardener. He especially enjoyed camping and spending time with friends and family in the springtime woods and attending NASCAR races. He will be sadly missed by the lives he touched in his many endeavors.
Surviving are his loving wife, of 34 years, Janelle S. (Stiles) Ries; sons, Scott (Michelle) Ries and Kevin (Meleah) Ries, both of the Rittman area; his beautiful granddaughters, Shelby Elizabeth and Abigail Mae, who brought him joy and inspiration; brothers, William (Bonnie) Ries of Barberton and Thomas Ries of Wadsworth; and sisters, Jacqueline (Marvin) Bendel, Janet (William) Scott and Jetta (Robert) Fete, all of Wadsworth. He was the much loved "uncle Kenny" to 67 nieces and nephews and enjoyed spending time with each of them.
His parents Kenneth P. and Myrtle E. (Houston) Ries, died previously.

Carl Shock
WOOSTER -- Carl F. Shock, 83, of Wooster, died peacefully at his home Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Services will be Sunday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, Sherwood Chapel, Wooster, with the Rev. Larry Shock officiating. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
Relatives and friends may call Saturday March 1, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Gifts in memory of Carl F. Shock may be made to Hospice of Wayne County, 2525-A Back Orrville Road, Wooster 44691.
He was born April 12, 1919, in Bower, W.Va., the son of Fraud Burton and Drewsy Belle (Reasor) Shock and married Opal V. Bush on Sept. 18, 1944. She survives.
Carl worked for Roy Martin Ford Garage for more than 20 years and then for COFSCO Oil Field Supplies. He retired after more than 15 years there. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, pitching horseshoes, hunting, shooting pool and was an extremely avid gardener.
Carl F. Shock served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army.
Surviving along with his wife, are children, Larry (Francile) Shock of Kissimmee, Fla., Mrs. Jim (Patricia) Rogers of Shreve, Mrs. Patrick (Ida) Ayers of Wooster, Burton (Cathy) Shock of Orrville, Mrs. Scott (Bessie) Harding of Moreland, Linda "Susie" Shock of the home and Mrs. John (Carol) Harvey of Shreve; a son-in-law, Jerry Moore of Kidron; 21 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Creed (Bobbi) Shock of Pittsburgh, Pa; and a sister, Mrs. Bill (Elizabeth) Innes of Venice, Fla.
Children, Tilford Gene Shock and Betty Moore, brothers, Aaron B., Farley J., Thurman, Dorsey and David M. Shock, and sisters, Rosanna Brady, Valaria Keller-Collins, Ella Ruth Prince and Frieda Rinninger, died previously.

Ruth Thompson
BURBANK -- Ruth G. Thompson, 90, 12494 Friendsville Road, died Thursday evening, Feb. 27, 2003, at Wayne County Care Center.
Services will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Creston Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. James McCurdy officiating. Burial will be at Jackson Cemetery.
Friends may call tonight (Saturday) from 7-9 at Murray Funeral Home in Creston.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association; or to Creston Presbyterian Church, 13070 Cleveland Road, Creston 44217.
She was born Nov. 26, 1912, in Hermanville, south of Creston to Zeno S. and Stella (Lehman) Miller and married Harold Thompson on Feb. 3, 1939. He survives.
She was a 1930 graduate of Creston High School, attended Wooster College and received her teaching certificate from Kent State University.
She had made her home on Friendsville Road since 1940 and was a teacher at Creston Elementary School for 26 years, retiring in 1974.
She was a member of Creston Presbyterian Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, a choir member and pianist.
Surviving in addition to her husband, are children, Phillip (Janice) Thompson of Carlisle, Pa., Connie (David) O'Connor of Fairview Park, Joyce (Don) Shrimplin of Wadsworth, James Thompson of the home, Lisa (Kevin) Calame of Wooster and Sheila Thompson of North Carolina; grandchildren, Stephen (Tami) Thompson, Gregory (Kelli) Thompson, Michael Thompson, Aaron (Melissa) Shrimplin, Kristin Shrimplin, John Graham, Zachary, Jessica and Savannah Thompson; and a sister, Lois Erdos of Creston.
Brothers, Dwight, Paul and Homer "Pat" Miller and sisters, Grace Garver and Bernice Peoples, died previously.

Karen Burgess
LOUDONVILLE -- Karen S. Burgess, 56, of Loudonville, died at her residence Friday afternoon, Feb. 28, 2003, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Burgess was born Aug. 26, 1946, in Wooster, the daughter of Roy and Faye (Bower) Merriman.
She lived in the Loudonville area all of her life and was a 1964 graduate of Big Prairie-Lakeville High School and also a graduate of the Wooster Business College.
She worked for The College of Wooster, Byland Animal Hospital, First Federal of Mount Vernon, Loudonville, BankOne of Wooster, was vice president of Farmers Savings Bank, and office manager of Burgess Hearse and Ambulance Sales.
She was a member of United Methodist Church, Loudonville, Loudonville Mother's Club, the Younger Birthday Club, and a charter member of Loudonville Business and Professional Women's Club.
Karen was a wonderful friend, dependable and always a gentle presence. She enjoyed knitting for her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Jack E. Burgess, whom she married Oct. 29, 1965; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Brigin Burgess and Jack Jr. and Tracy Burgess, both of Loudonville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Joan Speicher and Peggy and Hal Franks, both of Wooster; three grandchildren, Dillon, Victoria, and Madeline Burgess of Loudonville.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ada Faye Burgess, who died June 25, 1969.
Services will be conducted Tuesday, March 4, at 11 a.m. in Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home, Loudonville, with the Rev. Patricia Reiter officiating. Burial will be in Loudonville Cemetery.
Friends may call Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home.
