WEST SALEM -- Clarence R. Dowdy Sr., 57, of West Salem, died Monday, Jan. 25, in Polk. Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Collins-Slater Funeral Home in Switzer, W.Va., where friends may call Thursday from 7-9 p.m. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Local calling hours are Wednesday from noon-2 p.m. at Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem. Those who wish may make contributions to Matteson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 314, West Salem 44287, to help defray funeral expenses. He was born Oct. 9, 1941 in Logan, W.Va., to Clarence and Genieve (Rawlins) Dowdy and married Charlotte Adams on June 10, 1967. Surviving in addition to his wife are children and their spouses, Clarence Ray and Anell Dowdy Jr. of North Carolina, Stephen and Lori Dowdy of Sterling, Cheri Dowdy and Natalie Kiemschies, both of Lodi and Celena and Jose Torres of Spencer; six grandchildren; his mother, Genieve Blevins of West Virginia; sisters, Jackie Godwin, Prisilla Frye, Threasa Belcher, Nancy Burgess and Cherry Sue Blevins, all of West Virginia; and brothers, Virgil Dowdy of North Carolina, Miles and Edward Dowdy and James Blevins, all of West Virginia.

Grace Lutz
AKRON -- Grace E. Lutz, 78, of Akron, died Saturday, Jan. 23, at Akron General Medical Center. Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Prentice Funeral Home, 1154 Kenmore Blvd., Akron. Burial will be at Rose Hill Burial Park. Friends may call tonight (Tuesday) from 6-8 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society. Surviving are children, Ralph and wife, Kimberly Lutz of Akron and Sandra Lutz of Columbus; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Her husband, Robert C. Lutz, died in 1973.

The Rev. Glenn Rettig
NEWARK -- The Rev. Glenn H. Rettig, 74, of Newark, died Monday, Jan. 25, at Arlington Nursing Home. He was the father of Tim and wife, Chris Rettig and Dan and wife, Cherrie Rettig, all of Wooster. Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ in Newark, with the Rev. Pam Webb officiating. Graveside services will be Thursday at noon at St. John's United Church of Christ Cemetery in Holgate. Friends may call tonight (Tuesday) from 7-9 at Brucker & Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N. Twenty-First St., Newark, or one hour prior to the services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's United Church of Christ in Newark; or to a charity of the donor's choice. He was born April 12, 1924 in Henry County to Carl A. and Mabel R. (Snyder) Rettig and was married to Ruth (Imhof) for more than 50 years. She survives. Surviving in addition to his sons and wife are three other children, Art and wife, Debra Rettig of Atwood, Ill., Judith and husband, Jerry Goodman of Newark and Beth and husband, David Gobels of North Olmsted; 18 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Arlene Willford of Hayden Lake, Idaho.

Vesta Buxton
BELLEFONTAINE -- Vesta Martha (Kelley) Buxton, 90, a resident of Heartland of Bellefontaine, formerly of Wooster, died Sunday, Jan. 24. Graveside services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Huntsville Cemetery, with the Rev. David Brower officiating. A Requiem Eucharist will follow at 1 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Sidney. A vigil service will be Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund. She was born Feb. 14, 1908 in East Palestine to Ulysses S. Grant and Mary (Moore) Kelley and married the Rev. Eugene H. Buxton on June 29, 1927 in Cumberland, W.Va. He died Sept. 3, 1990. Surviving is a son, the Rev. E. Harvey Buxton of Huntsville.

Mae Heller
RUSHVILLE, Ind. -- Mae Jean Heller, 84, of Rushville, Ind., died Monday, Jan. 25. Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Sherman Church of Christ in Norton, with the Rev. Ira J. Brandon officiating. Burial will be at Chestnut Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at Zak-Monbarren Funeral Home in Doylestown, or one hour prior to the services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Sherman Church of Christ, 4041 Johnson Road, Norton 44203. She was born Nov. 30, 1914, in Indiana County, Pa., to Ira and Katherine (Hawkins) Brandon and married Russell Heller on Dec. 31, 1935. He died previously. Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Jeannetta Heller of White Mills, Ky., Donald and Helen Heller of Rushville, Ind., and Bruce and Dorothy Heller of Nicolasville, Ky.; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Ira J. Brandon of Columbus; and a sister, Arlene Weaver of Doylestown.

Jane Joyce
STERLING -- Jane Joyce, 96, formerly of Sterling, died Monday, Jan. 25, at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital. Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Gillman Funeral Home in Rittman, with the Rev. Fay A. Botten officiating. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Sterling. Friends may call tonight (Wednesday) from 7-9 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Ida Sue School, 266 Oldman Road, Wooster 44691. She was born Feb. 28, 1902 in Milton Township to Joseph and Mary (Pape) Woyat and married Harley Joyce. He died Sept. 11, 1978. Surviving are a son, Carl and wife, Jinny Joyce of Surprise, Ariz; and two grandchildren.

WOOSTER -- Bernice M. Drayer, 61, 1651 Saunders Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at Wooster Community Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wooster. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 7-9 p.m. at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home in Wooster. She was born June 24, 1937 in Port-Au-Port, New Foundland, Canada, to Andrew and Bertina (Gillis) McIsaac and married Ralph E. Drayer on Sept. 14, 1956. He survives. Surviving in addition to her husband, are sons and their wives, Steven and Kimberly Drayer of Clarkston, Mich., Loel and Teresa Drayer of Wooster and David and Amy Drayer of Bellingham, Wash.; grandchildren, Lauren and Dillon Drayer; her mother of Port-Au-Port, New Foundland, Canada; and brothers and sisters, Ignatius and James McIsaac and Marilyn McIsaac, all of Port-Au-Port, New Foundland, Canada, Camila DeHart of Highwayview, Ky., Brendan McIsaac of Toronto, Canada, Joseph and Ivan McIsaac, both of Stephenville, New Foundland, Canada, Meriva Tammet of Aurora, Ontario, Canada, Joan Houghton of Fall River, Nova Scotia, Wade McIsaac of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Marion Gale of Beaver Creek, Maria Houghton of Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, and Eldred Hynes of Alberta, Canada.

Alvin Best Sr.
CRESTON -- Alvin E. Best Sr., 81, of Cherokee Lane, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Glendora Health Care Center, after a period of declining health. Private family services will be held. Burial of the cremains will be in Dravosburg, Pa. Arrangements were handled by Murray Funeral Home in Creston. He was born Aug. 21, 1917 in Duquesne, Pa., to James and Hettie (Letson) Best and married Gladys M. Andrews on June 23, 1956. She died June 30, 1994. Surviving are children, Deana L. Wuenschel and Daniel W. Best, both of Pittsburgh, Alvin E. Best Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz., and Joseph R. Best of Dravosburg, Pa.; stepchildren, Dorothy Scott of Farmington Hills, Mich., Donald Andrews of Livonia, Mich., and Dennis Andrews of Monrovia, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; a brother, John and sisters, Ethel and Bertha, all of Florida.

Ida Stout
DANVILLE -- Ida Ellen (Winger) Stout, 90, 28530 Jelloway Road 42, Danville, formerly of Wayne County, died Monday, Jan. 11, at Mount Vernon Hospital, after a long illness. Cremation was been handled by Fischer Funeral Home in Danville. She was born Nov. 18, 1908 in Trumbull County to Frederick and Jennie Mae (Abbott) Winger and married John S. Stout on March 9, 1939. He died Sept. 5, 1976. Surviving are sisters, Dorothy Hiller and Mrs. Lawrence (Florence) Pinski, both of Ashland; many nieces and nephews; and several relatives in the Wooster area.

Alma Kauffman
MOUNT EATON -- Alma Kauffman, 88, of Mount Eaton, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Doctors Hospital in Massillon, after a period of declining health. Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Calvary Chapel Mennonite Church near Mount Eaton, with the Revs. Wayne Yutzy and Abe Schlabach officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Spidell Funeral Home in Mount Eaton, or one hour prior to services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Chapel Mennonite Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 222, Mount Eaton 44659. She was born Oct. 31, 1910, in Holmes County to Steve S. and Mary (Weaver) Miller and married Henry B. Kauffman on Jan. 31, 1935. He died April 13, 1991. Surviving are children, Mrs. Ivan (Mary) Schrock of Berlin, Mrs. Atlee (Mattie) Hochstetler of Sarasota, Fla., Mrs. Nevin (Edna) Hershberger and Roy Kauffman, both of Mount Eaton, Paul Kauffman of Plain City, Steve Kauffman of American Falls, Idaho, David Kauffman of Garden City, Mo., Dennis Kauffman of Lancaster, Pa., and Mark Kauffman of Jacksonville, Fla.; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Mose (Anna) Yutzy of Millersburg, Edna Mullet of Benton and Iva Miller of Apple Creek; and brothers, Jacob S. Miller of Orrville and Roman S. Miller of Dundee.

Barbara Fairbanks
LOUDONVILLE -- Barbara Ann Fairbanks, 73, formerly of South Mount Vernon Avenue, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Colonial Manor Health Care, after a long illness. Graveside services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Loudonville Cemetery, with the Rev. Lloyd Miller officiating. There will be no calling hours. Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home in Loudonville, is handling arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Activity Fund at Colonial Manor Health Care Center in Loudonville. Surviving are children, Michael Fairbanks of Mansfield, Sandra and husband, Nicholas Childs of Loudonville and Donna and husband, Daniel Brandyberry of Marietta; six grandchildren; and a sister, Blanche Riggins of Miami, Fla.

Mark Yoder
SUGARCREEK -- Mark A. Yoder, 21, of Sugarcreek, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Akron City Hospital, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Services will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Maranatha Fellowship Church in Sugarcreek, with Wayne Weaver officiating. Burial will be at Crossroads Mission Church Cemetery. Friends may call today (Thursday) from 2-4 and 5-9 at Maranatha Fellowship Church in Millersburg. Arrangements are being handled by Butler-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek. He was born Oct. 20, 1977 in Holmes County to Abe M. and Susan (Miller) Yoder and married Rhonda M. Troyer on Aug. 8, 1998. She survives. Surviving in addition to his wife, are his parents of Sugarcreek; brothers, Andy A., Robert A., Mose A., Ray A. and Noah A. Yoder, all of Sugarcreek; and grandparents, Clara Miller of Sugarcreek and Mose and Lizzie Yoder of Baltic.

Victoria Guzzo
CANTON -- Victoria (Dima) Guzzo, 83, who had made her home with her son and daughter-in-law in Canton, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 26, 1999, at Hanover House, after an extended illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be sung Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Canton, with the Rev. Father Thomas Dyer as celebrant and her son, Father M. Raphael Joseph Guzzo, FBA, assisting with the Mass. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Canton. Friends may call Friday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at Rossi Funeral Home, 730 30th St., NW, Canton, with the Holy Rosary Service being led by Father M. Raphael Joseph Guzzo, with the Miraculous Medal Sodality at 7 p.m. A Traditional Roman Catholic Latin Requiem Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Queen of Angels Monastery, 245 N. Buckeye St., Wooster. Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Father M. Raphael Joseph Guzzo, stationed at the Queen of Angels Monastery in Wooster, Frank and Beverly Guzzo of North Canton and Charles and Evelyn Guzzo of Canton, with whom she had made her home; daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Donald Kennedy of Canton and Mary and Richard Lockard of North Canton; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Antoinette Chirillo, and a brother, Joseph Dima, both of Canton. Her husband, Frank Guzzo, died Nov. 13, 1986.

Shirley Jensen
ORRVILLE -- Shirley Jensen, 63, 240 N. Millborne Road, Lot 12 A, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at her home after a long illness. Services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home in Wooster, with the Rev. O.J. Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Wooster Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Those who wish may make contributions to Kidney Foundation of Wayne County, 5318 Tannerville Road, Orrville 44667; Hospice of Wayne County, 2525-A Back Orrville Road, Wooster 44691; or to Apple Creek Fire & Rescue, P.O. Box 208, Apple Creek 44606. She was born Nov. 3, 1935 in Wooster to Milo and Mary (Rhoades) Becker and married Marvin G. Jensen on March 4, 1952. He survives. Surviving in addition to her husband are children, Gary Jensen of Holmesville and Michael and wife, Barb Jensen of West Lafayette; grandchildren, Matt Jensen of Holmesville and Chad Jensen of Crestline; and a brother, Richard and wife, Betty Jean Becker of Wooster.

APPLE CREEK -- Mary (Miller) Stutzman, 78, 9120 E. Moreland Road, died this morning, Jan. 29. Services will be Sunday at the residence, with Bishop Aden M. Troyer officiating. Burial will be at Yoder Cemetery, Salt Creek Township. Friends may call anytime at the residence. Murray Funeral Home in Fredericksburg, is handling arrangements. She was born April 9, 1920 in Holmes County to Joe C.D. and Emma Miller, and married Dan E. Stutzman on Dec. 31, 1959. He survives. Surviving in addition to her husband are stepchildren, Mrs. Roy H. (Sarah) Miller of Big Prairie, Eli D. and Alfred D. Stutzman, both of Apple Creek and Melvin D. Stutzman of the home; 33 step-grandchildren; 44 step-great-grandchildren; brothers, Andy J.C., Neal J., Abe J.C., John J., Amman J. and Joe J. Miller, all of Fredericksburg; and sisters, Mrs. David L. (Sarah) Raber of Big Prairie, Mrs. John (Anna) Hershberger of Ashland, Mrs. Aden L. (Mattie) Yoder of Westby, Wis., Mrs. Roman J. (Ada) Yoder of Fredericksburg and Mrs. Roy J.D. (Emma) Miller of Apple Creek.

Edward Hixon Sr.
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Edward L. Hixon Sr., 74, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Orrville, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, after a short illness. Memorial services and burial will be held Monday in Florida. Friends who wish may make contributions to Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home, 5245 U.S. 98 N., Lakeland, Fla., to help defray expenses. Surviving are a son; a granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren. His wife, Martha Jean Hixon, died in June of 1995.

She was born April 27, 1926 in Burbank to Henry F. and Stella Mae (Ginter) Lautzenheiser and married Albert Church, Jr. on Nov. 21, 1941. He died on May 28, 1968. Surviving are her children, Gary and Janice Church of Brewster, Donald and Susan Church and Hazel and Bruce Grier, all of Lodi, Joyce and Francis Bent of Danville, Ill., Vickie Bailey of Bellefontaine, Brenda and Charles Boughman and Eddie Church, all of Glenmont, and Sandra and Bill Bryant and Carl Church, all of Orrville; 41 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; brothers, Clayton Lautzenheiser of Wadsworth, Henry Lautzenheiser of Brewster, and a half-brother, Warren Church of Wadsworth; sisters, Evelyn Bishop of Lafayette, Goldie Everett of North Lawrence, and Mary Lou Cavendish of Creston; and a companion, Arthur "Ot" Church, with whom she made her home.

Snyder of Wooster; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jayne Ruth Yoder of Wellington.

WOOSTER -- Reva Mae Dye, 75, formerly of Crestview Drive, died Friday, Jan. 29, at Wayne County Care Center. Services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at McIntire, Davis and Greene Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Pettyjohn officiating. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens. Friends may call Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. She was born Feb. 19, 1923 in Wooster to Russell and Mabel (Walter) Badger and married Robert L. Dye on July 19, 1948. He died in April 1996. Surviving are her children and their spouses, Sharon and Gary Oberly, Deena and Don Butcher, and Darnel and Don Hooley, all of Wooster, and Dennis and Sally Dye of Loudonville; grandchildren, Chad, Amber, and Angie Oberly, Jim and Stef Stake, Bobby, Lindsey and Sara Beth Dye, Scott, Deb and Tim Butcher, and Stacey, Tiffany and Courtney Hooley; great-grandchildren, Miranda and Rileigh Stake, and Courtney Butcher; a sister, Dorothy L.
