Sara Nye

CAREY - Sara M. Nye, 607 West St., Carey, died at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, Tenn. She was 60. Born in Findlay on June 2, 1943, she was a daughter of Edward T. and Ruth E. (Mullholand) Riester. She and Ronald L. Nye were married April 6, 1963. He survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Julie Musgrave, Carey; a son, Mike Nye, Carey; two grandsons, Dylan Musgrave and Ryan Nye; and two sisters, Janet Putnam and Elizabeth Bland, both of Carey. She was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Honeycutt. A 1961 graduate of Carey High School, Mrs. Nye was clerk/treasurer of the village of Carey. She retired in 2002. She attended the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey and was a member of its Rosary Altar Society. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation with the Rev. Regis Schlagheck officiating. Visitation is at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey from 2-9 p.m. today. A Scripture service will be held at 8 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to the Dorcas Carey Public Library or Northwest Ohio Diabetes Association in care of Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey OH 43316.

Ethel Draper

FOREST - Ethel L. "Betty" Draper, formerly of Forest and more recently of the Kenton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, died at Hardin Memorial Hospital, Kenton, at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2003, at the age of 84. Born on Aug. 13, 1918, in Hardin County, she was a daughter of Clarence and Florence B. (Oates) Long. She married Ross Draper Jr. on Jan. 20, 1941. He died Aug. 9, 1973. Surviving are three daughters, Peggy Vanderpool, Gloria Smith and Rita Little, all of Forest; three sons, Tony, Casey and Ross, all of Forest; 82 grandchildren, stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, George Long, Kenton; and a sister, Mildred Wilkerson, Kenton. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dixie Pauley; a brother, Paul Long; and two sisters, Alice Cahill and Lillian Stinson. Mrs. Draper was a homemaker. She was a member of the Hardin County Senior Citizens Club in Kenton. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Shields Funeral Home in Forest, with the Rev. Joe Searfoss officiating. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery. Visitation is at the funeral home from 2-8 p.m. Saturday. Memorials may be made to the organization of the donorŐs choice.

Geraldine Musser

Geraldine Musser, formerly of Decatur, Ga., and a resident of Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community since 1996, died at 7:17 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2003, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital. She was 91. Born in Birmingham, Ala., on July 8, 1912, she was the daughter of Arthur Jay and Addie (MacDonald) Hitchcock. She married William Daniel Musser in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 12, 1940. He died March 2, 2000. Surviving are a daughter, Molly Kent, Upper Sandusky; a son, Philip, Hancock, Mich.; four grandchildren, Jenny McCollister, Athens; Matt Kent, Freiburg, Germany; Wes Kent, Hilliard; and Jake Musser, Hancock; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Arthur Hitchcock Jr. and William Hitchcock, both of Chattanooga, Tenn. She was preceded in death by three brothers, George, John and Edward Hitchcock. A graduate of Central High School in Chattanooga, Mrs. Musser attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where she was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. A homemaker, Mrs. Musser at one time worked as a secretary for the U.S. government in Washington, and for Paddock Publications in Arlington Heights, Ill., as a proofreader. Mrs. Musser was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Ga., and also attended chapel services at Fairhaven. She enjoyed playing bridge, listening to classical music, crafts, nature and reading, especially the Bible. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Lucas Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation is at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to Campus Crusade for Christ or the National Audubon Society in care of Lucas Funeral Home, PO Box 207, Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

Jerry Heid

Jerry B. Heid, Bucyrus, died at 10:56 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003, at Med Central Hospital in Mansfield, at the age of 59. Born on Jan. 17, 1944, in Bucyrus, he was a son of Carl R. and Georgia A. (Richardson) Heid. Surviving are two sisters, Edith K. Moor and Jessie L. Heid, both of Upper Sandusky; a brother, David W. Heid, Bucyrus; three nephews; and a great-niece. In 1993, Mr. Heid retired from American Standard in Tiffin after 24 years of service. He also worked with his father doing waste removal from Swan Rubber in Bucyrus. The family once owned and operated the Sinclair Service Station west of Bucyrus. Mr. Heid enjoyed fishing and boating, mostly on Lake Erie, where he once owned a summer vacation spot on the Sandusky Bay. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Myers officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Bucyrus. Visitation is at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today. Archie Cochran
Archie W. Cochran, formerly of Harpster and a recent resident of Barefoot Bay, Fla., died at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003, at Altercare Nursing Home in Bucyrus, at the age of 85. Born in Hardin County on Feb. 17, 1918, he was a son of Curby and Mary (McBride) Cochran. He first married Laurene Mawer on Dec. 26, 1939. She died Aug. 9, 1982. He then married Irene Auzalone on April 29, 1986. She died Feb. 4, 1994. He and Dorothy Goare were married Feb. 10, 1996. She survives in Barefoot Bay. Also surviving are a daughter, Rosemary Lee Chappell, Custer, S.D.; three grandchildren, Kim Chappell and Melissa Boudreaux, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Steven Chappell, Brookings, S.D.; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Fess, Jay and Stanton Cochran; and two sisters, Pauline Hinaman and Dale Jones. A 1936 graduate of Harpster High School, Mr. Cochran earned his bachelor's degree in agriculture from Ohio State University. He retired in 1975 from Marion Correctional Institute. He was a farm manager there from 1950-60, an assistant superintendent from 1960-70 and then worked in security for five years. After he retired, Mr. Cochran worked at Frayer Seed Co. and part time at the Marion Post Office. Early in his working career, he taught in Somerset, Prospect, Richwood, Claridon and Waldo schools. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sebastian, Fla. Mr. Cochran was a member of the Prospect F&AM No. 444 and the Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus. He enjoyed wood carving, genealogy and his computer. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lucas Funeral Home with the Rev. Ralph Wiley officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation is at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Homecare Matters in care of Lucas Funeral Home, PO Box 207, Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

Jean Thomas

CAREY - Jean Theresa Thomas, 300 W. North St., Carey, died at 11:49 a.m. Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center in Findlay. She was 80. A daughter of Fred and Leaona (Burner) Laessle, she was born in Sandusky on Oct. 15, 1922. She married Blaine "Spraz" Thomas on Nov. 14, 1944, in Fremont. He died Aug. 28, 2000. Surviving are two sons, Ronald, Mesquite, Nev.; and Gary, Findlay; two grandsons, Gary A. Jr. and Phillip E. Thomas; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marge Cullen, Sandusky. Mrs. Thomas was a former secretary of the Remlinger Insurance Agency and the Hilty Insurance Agency in Carey. She retired from the Jordon Insurance Agency in Carey. She attended the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey. Mrs. Thomas was a former member of the Women's Bowling League and the Saturday Night Mixed-Doubles League at the former Bowl-Era Bowling Lanes in Carey. A Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation with the Rev. Regis Schlagheck officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey. Visitation is at Stombaugh-Batton Funer-al Home in Carey, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday. There will be a Scripture service Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in care of Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey OH 43316.

Mildred Kotterman

BELLE CENTER - Mildred H. Kotterman, 94, of Belle Center, died Monday, July 28, 2003, at her residence. She and her husband lived in Florida for 15 winters. She was born April 15, 1909, in Eden Township, Wyandot County, to George and Blanche (Imler) Smith. On June 6, 1935, she married David Kotterman, who died in November 1999. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Mills, Wooster; a son, Charles, Belle Center; four grandchildren, Kenneth Mills, Killbuck; Nina Blankenship, Wooster; Glenn Mills, Celina; and Rita Gasser, Shreve; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. A sister, Gladys Amert; and two brothers, Charles and Daniel Smith, died previously. Following graduation from Eden High School in 1926, Mrs. Kotterman attended Bowling Green State University for two years and received her lifetime teaching certificate for elementary grades. She taught for two years in a one-room school, five years in Upper Sandusky and one and one-half years at Belle Center. She was a life member of the Methodist Church and a member of Belle Center United Methodist Church since 1942. She had taught a Sunday school class and had been a children's Sunday school superintendent. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and treasurer of the morning circle, served on various church committees and was the church delegate to annual conference at Lakeside. Other memberships included the former Northwood Neighbor-hood Club and Chapter 312 of the Eastern Star, the Adarin Club, Women's Club and Euchte Club. She enjoyed playing cards, gardening and crocheting. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Belle Center, at 10 a.m. Friday. Following will be a memorial service at Belle Center United Methodist Church, the Rev. Kevin Smith officiating. Calling hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Eichholtz Funeral Home, Belle Center. Memorial contributions may be made to Belle Center UMC, 101 S Center St, Belle Center OH 43310; or to the American Heart Association.

Amy McDaniel

FOREST - Amy I. McDaniel, 89, died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, in Fox Run Manor, Findlay. She formerly resided in Mount Blanchard. She was born Sept. 29, 1913, in Arcadia, to John and Maggie (Beamer) Barnes. On June 3, 1934, she married Dwight McDaniel, who died July 22, 1995. Surviving are three sons, James, Mount Blanchard; Gene, Findlay; and Merle, Van Buren; three daughters, Sharon Myers, Mount Blanchard; Joan Walters, Findlay; and Linda Garey, McComb; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a son, John; a grandchild; four brothers, Albert, Ira, Morris and Donald; and a sister, Ruth Ewing. A homemaker, Mrs. McDaniel was affiliated with Mount Blanchard Nazarene Church. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Shields Funeral Home, Forest, the Rev. Karen Fourman officiating. Interment will be in Knollcrest Gardens, Arcadia. Visitation is until 4 this afternoon and from 7-9 this evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Mount Blanchard United Methodist Church.

Vera Heckerman

Vera H. Heckerman, 105 N. Mary St., Forest, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at 1:25 a.m. at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Kenton. She was 97. Born in Rising Sun on April 26, 1906, she was a daughter of William and Zaida (Bower) Hoot. Ms. Heckerman was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters. A private graveside service will be Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. at Hueston Cemetery in Forest, with the Rev. Mark Bishop officiating. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice. Shields Funeral Home, Forest, is handling arrangements.

Anne Nash

FOREST - Anne C. Nash, formerly of Long Island, N.Y., and of Forest, and more recently of Kenton, died at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Kenton, at 3:34 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at the age of 92. Born on June 27, 1911, in Newark, N.J., she was a daughter of Patrick and Annie (O'Hara) Byrne. She first married Robert M. Wickham in 1939. He died in November 1960. She married John W. Nash on Dec. 16, 1967. He survives in Kenton. Also surviving are a daughter, Diane Cramer, Forest; two sons, Robert Wickham, Wading River, N.Y.; and Gerald Wickham, Foundation Hills, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. Burial will be in Long Island. Memorials may be made to the organization of the donor's choice. Shields Funeral Home in Forest is handling arrangements.

VeraBelle Wentz

FOREST - VeraBelle Wentz, Mount Blanchard, died on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at 2:10 p.m. at Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center, Findlay. She was 74. Born on Sept. 8, 1928 in Wyandot County, she was a daughter of Ralph and Leona (Johnson) Everhart. She married Vernon Wentz on April 4, 1948. He survives in Mount Blanchard. Also surviving are a son, Mark Wentz, Mount Blanchard; three daughters, Marcia Clay and Marlene Wentz, Forest; Melissa Laubacher, Findlay; a sister, Ruth Miller, Bucyrus; seven grandchildren, Joshua, Matthew, Erin, Shari, Trisha, Michael and Blake; and a great-granddaughter. Preceding her in death were two brothers, Lawrence and Gail Everhart. Mrs. Wentz spent her life as a homemaker. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Shields Funeral Home, Forest, with the Rev. James Shrider officiating. Burial will be in Wharton-Richland Union Cemetery, Wharton. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Ohio Kidney Foundation, Lima, or Cancer Patient Services, Findlay.

Daniel Shepherd

Daniel Shepherd of Terrace Drive, Upper Sandusky, died at 4:34 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, in the emergency room of Wyandot Memorial Hospital. He was 63. A son of Marson and Mero (King) Shepherd, he was born in Hindman, Ky., on Nov. 12, 1939. He and Susan K. Miller were married Dec. 10, 1961, at St. Paul Lutheran Church. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Robert, Midland, Mich.; a daughter, Eileen Newman, Upper Sandusky; five grandchildren, Heather Newman, R. Daniel Shepherd, Sonya Shepherd, Jacob Newman and Shaina Shepherd; three stepgrandchildren, Jim, Chris and David Fernette; four brothers, Herschel, Dave and Eddie, all of Upper Sandusky, and Larry of Carey; and three sisters, Jenny Holdcraft, Brenda Swavel and Eva Steffanni, all of Upper Sandusky. He was preceded in death by a brother, Arnold; and a sister, Mavis. After attending Marseilles Schools, Mr. Shepherd served in the U.S. Marines. He started at a journeyman electrician. He then co-owned Shepherd and Soule Construction in the Upper Sandusky area. After that, Mr. Shepherd co-owned Wyandot Extrusion in Marseilles, and then Key Plastics Inc. in Upper Sandusky. He had been in partnership with the VTS Co. Ltd. in Forest most recently. Mr. Shepherd was a member of Warpole Lodge No. 176 F&AM, AMVETS Post No. 777 and Moose Lodge No. 1093. He collected classic cars, Indian memorabilia and enjoyed golfing. He also followed NASCAR, especially Bill Elliot and Casey Atwood. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Lucas Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Elsholz officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by various veterans' organizations. Visitation is at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. A Masonic service will be held Wednesday at 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, Wyandot Health Foundation or the Heart Support Group in care of Lucas Funeral Home, PO Box 207, Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

Albert Adams

Albert S. Adams, formerly of Nevada, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2003, at 1 a.m. at Wyandot Manor Nursing Home, where he had been residing for the past two years. He was 64. Born on May 18, 1939, in Upper Sandusky, he was the son of Albert and Opal (Sizemore) Adams. He married Marsena Easter. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Dana Newland, Nevada; two grandchildren, David Newland II and Brodie Newland; and two brothers, Jay Adams, Nevada; and Don Adams, Bucyrus. Mr. Adams retired from Indian Mill Resort, where he served as a maintenance supervisor. Earlier, he worked at Carey Plastics as a supervisor for many years. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, his hobbies included woodworking, carpentry, small motor repair and electronics. A memorial service will be Thursday at 5 p.m. at Lucas Funeral Home with the Rev. George Kolarik officiating. Burial will be in Nevada Cemetery at a later date. Mr. Adams wanted to be cremated. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-5 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation, Diabetes Foundation or the American Cancer Society in care of Lucas Funeral Home, PO Box 207, Upper Sandusky, OH, 43351.

Sister Rosemary Fortman

FREMONT - Sister Rosemary Fortman, formerly Sister Mary Marcella, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at St. Bernadine Home in Fremont. She was 91. Born on Feb. 20, 1912, in Fort Recovery, she was a daughter of John and Victoria (Stelzer) Fortman. Surviving are three sisters, Lucy, Dayton; Dorothy Schoenlein, Coldwater; and Sister Mary Madonna, Fremont. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth and Adelaide; and four brothers, Paul, John, Richard and the Rev. Marcellus. Sister Rosemary entered the Sisters of Mercy on March 24, 1931, and made Profession of Vows on Aug. 15, 1933. She earned a diploma in nursing, a bachelor's degree and numerous institutes in nursing and radiology. In 1970, Sister Rosemary became the first administrator of St. Bernadine Home. In 1974, she was one of 12 members appointed by the governor to the newly formed Ohio Commission on Aging. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated in St. Bernadine Chapel on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Burial will follow in the Convent Cemetery. Visitation is at St. Bernadine Home today from 2-7:30 p.m. and until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of Mercy or to an organization of the donor's choice. Keller-Ochs-Koch Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
