Betty Hillman

TIFFIN - Betty Jean Hillman, Cridersville, died at the age of 72 on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at St. Rita Medical Center in Lima. Born in Kenton on March 3, 1931, she was a daughter of Pearl and Maybelle (Woodard) Timmons. She and John B. Hillman were married in October 1952, in Tiffin. He died in December 1973. Surviving are a daughter, Jayne Zickafoose, Springfield, Mo.; a son, John, Lima; four grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Timmons, Upper Sandusky; and Elton Timmons, Marion; and three sisters, Susan Withers, Marion; Mae Swick, Bucyrus; and June Bair, Columbus. She was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Scott; and three brothers, John, Rolla and Pearl Timmons. A graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, Mrs. Hillman was a secretary at the Tiffin Developmental Center. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home in Tiffin. Burial will follow in Seneca Memory Gardens, Tiffin. Visitation is at the funeral home from 9-11 a.m. Saturday. Memorials may be made to The Gerad Center, 803 W. Market St., Lima OH 45801.

Clarence Decker

FOREST - Clarence E. Decker, Caruthers, Calif., died at 1:38 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, in a vehicle accident in Sikeston, Mo. He was 57. Born in Findlay on Jan. 14, 1946, he was a son of Carl and Mary (Litzenberg) Decker. He married C. Arlene Decker on Oct. 29, 1995. She died Aug. 2, 2003. Surviving are a son, David, Los Angeles; a daughter, Kim Brumfield, Denver; a stepson, Sean Langer, Caruthers; four grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Clark, Mount Blanchard. Formerly of Arlington, Mr. Decker was a U.S. Navy veteran and a truck driver. He formerly attended Bible Fellowship Church in Arlington. A memorial service will be held in Findlay on Saturday for both Mr. and Mrs. Decker. There is no visitation and memorials may be made to the organization of the donor's choice. Shields Funeral Home in Forest is handling local arrangements.

Phyllis Strub

Phyllis A. Strub, 490 N. Third St., Upper Sandusky, died at 3:58 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at Marion General Hospital. She was 76. Born in Upper Sandusky on April 12, 1927, she was a daughter of Dallas and Nina (McGrew) Wagner. She married Paul H. Strub on Dec. 28, 1947, in John Stewart United Methodist Church. He survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Sharon Emerine, Cincinnati; a son, Tim, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Mathew and Christopher Emerine and Theresa Strub. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Jean Wagner. A 1945 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, Mrs. Strub received her bachelor's degree in education from Bowling Green State University. She taught at St. Peter Catholic School for 17 years. She was a member of John Stewart United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. Mrs. Strub was a charter member of B.P.O.E No. 83 Emblem Club and was a member of the Ohio Genealogical Society, National Society United States Daughters of 1812, Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War. She enjoyed sewing, needlework of all kinds, reading, genealogy, history and spending winters in Fort Lauderdale. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Geissinger officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. An Emblem Club memorial service will be conducted at 8 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to Old Mission Church in care of Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

Reginald Williams Sr.

CAREY - Reginald F. Williams Sr., 268 Duck Pond Road, Upper Sandusky, died at his home at 5:50 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2003. He was 76. Born in Carbondale, Pa., on Feb. 2, 1927, he was a son of Andrew Jackson and Margaret (Sears) Williams. He married Carol Knapp on Jan. 18, 1958. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Reginald Jr. and Gary, both of Upper Sandusky; two grandchildren, Lindsay and Matthew; and a brother, Andrew Jr., Meadville, Pa. He was preceded in death by two infant sons, Dennis Mitchell and Gordon Robert; and a sister, Myrtle Reed. In 1987, Mr. Williams retired as a security guard from General Motors Co. in Wilmington, Del., where he worked for 35 years. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Williams also served in the Army National Guard in Germany during the occupation. He was of Baptist faith. Mr. Williams was a volunteer firefighter for 15 years at the Minquadale Fire House in Minquadale, Del. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home in Honesdale, Pa. Burial will be in Glen-Dyberry Cemetery in Honesdale. Visitation is from 12-2 p.m. Thursday. Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey is handling local arrangements. Memorials may be made to diabetes research or the Upper Sandusky Rams Boosters in care of Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey OH 43316.

Virginia Schauweker

NEVADA - Virginia A. Schauweker, formerly of Nevada, died at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at the Community Health Care Center in Marion, where she was residing. She was 78. Born in Brownsville, Pa., on Dec. 28, 1924, she was a daughter of Frank M. and Elizabeth (Moscrop) Taylor. She married Vaud Vance on Oct. 2, 1943. He died April 17, 1972. She married Robert Schauweker on Nov. 29, 1974. He died May 21, 1995. Surviving are two stepgrandchildren, Richard Vance, New Washington; and Diane Martin, Las Vegas; four stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ethyl Laird, Marion; five brothers, Raymond Taylor, Stevensville, Mich.; William Taylor, Xenia; Charles Taylor, Southern Pines, N.C.; Thomas Taylor, Marion; and Ralph Taylor, Columbus; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a stepson, Dwight Vance; and a brother, Francis Taylor. A 1942 graduate of Marion Harding High School, Mrs. Schauweker was a postal clerk for 19 years, retiring in 1987. She and Mr. Schauweker owned and operated Junque Yard Antiques, doing business across Ohio. When she and Mr. Vance were married, they owned and operated a lumberyard with a sawmill in Nevada. She was a member of the Nevada Lutheran Church, and was associated with the Messiah Lutheran Church in North Fort Myers, Fla. Mrs. Schauweker was a former member of the Sweet Adelines and a charter member of the Copper Kettle Chorus in Bucyrus, and of the Tiffin Glass Collector's Club in Tiffin. She also was a former member of the Nevada Business Association and was a member of the Nevada Senior Citizens. She and Mr. Schauweker were judges of antiques at various fairs. The funeral will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Nevada Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in Nevada Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Lucas Funeral Home in Nevada, and for an hour at the church prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Nevada Lutheran Church or the Copper Kettle Chorus in care of Lucas Funeral Home, PO Box 98, Nevada OH 44849.

Donald Wickiser

CAREY - Donald E. "Dynie" Wickiser, 4835 TH 95, Carey, died at Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center in Findlay at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003. He was 69. Born in Carey on April 19, 1934, he was the son of Russell D. and Pauline E. (Mathern) Wickiser. He and Bernice A. Goshe were married on July 19, 1963, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tiffin. She survives. Also surviving are his mother in Upper Sandusky; two sons, Larry, Carey; and James, Findlay; two grandchildren, Lucas and Christy; and three sisters, Rosalyn Wechter, New Washington; and Patricia Boes and Connie Davis, both of Upper Sandusky. He was preceded in death by his father. A 1952 graduate of Carey High School, Mr. Wickiser as an active lifelong farmer in Wyandot County. He retired after 41 years as a school bus driver for Carey schools. Mr. Wickiser also was a professional drummer for many area bands for 40 years. He attended the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey. Mr. Wickiser was a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 1925 in Carey and was an adviser for the Carey Boys 4-H Club for many years. He also served on the Wyandot County Sheriff's Auxiliary for many years. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation with the Rev. Ernest Waechter officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Carey. Visitation is at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey from 2-9 p.m. Friday. A Christian wake will be held Friday at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Angeline School of Opportunity in care of Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey OH 43316.

Catherine Kleopfer

Catherine M. Kleopfer, 597 S. Warpole St., Upper Sandusky, died at her home, where she was born and lived her entire life, at 7:25 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003. She was 90. Born in Upper Sandusky on July 21, 1913, she was a daughter of William and Dora V. (Wagner) Gillen. She married Charles H. Kleopfer on Aug. 17, 1945, in Upper Sandusky. He died March 19, 1997. Surviving are three nephews, Richard and Fred Gillen, both of Upper Sandusky; and David Gillen, Iberia; and two nieces, Joanne Hensel and Jackie Walter, both of Upper Sandusky; seven great-nephews and six great-nieces; 12 great-great-nephews; 11 great-great-nieces; and a great-great-great nephew. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred and Russell Gillen; an infant sister, Ethel Gillen; two nieces, Sandra and Rosemary; and a nephew, Edward. A 1931 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, Mrs. Kleopfer was a homemaker and caregiver for her mother. She was a retail clerk at the former Flox Dept. Store and a receptionist and clerk at Wyandot Memorial Hospital. She retired as a secretary receptionist at Bringman and Co. Funeral Home to be a caregiver for her husband. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and had been attending First Lutheran Church. Mrs. Kleopfer was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, working crossword puzzles, driving through Killdeer Plains and going out to eat. Mrs. Kleopfer also was a fan of Upper Sandusky High School and Ohio State football. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Julianne Smith officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is at the funeral home from 1-3 p.m. Sunday and for an hour prior to the service Monday. Richard Hohman

FREWSBURG, N.Y. - Richard E. Hohman, 75, of Jamestown, N.Y., died at 6:53 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at his home. Born Oct. 8, 1927, in Salamanca, N.Y., he was a son of Andrew and Genevieve (Covell) Hohman. He married Marjorie Rall on Nov. 19, 1955, in Upper Sandusky. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Ann Marie Lee, Dunkirk, N.Y.; and Teresa Madigan, Norfolk, Va.; four sons, Michael, Kiantone, N.Y.; James, Alexandria, Va.; Thomas, Mansfield, Pa.; and Steven, Owensboro, Ky.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Dorothy Runfola, Fredonia, N.Y.; and Joann Cook, Berkley, Calif. A 1945 graduate of Jamestown High School and Jamestown Community College, Mr. Hohman was a veteran of the U.S. Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force. He was employed as a plant operator for the Jamestown Waste Water Treatment Plant, retiring in 1993. Mr. Hohman was a member of Samuel Derby Post No. 556 American Legion in Frewsburg and the Jamestown Knights of Columbus. He also was a charter member of the Chautauqua Carter Carburetor Club, a member of the Air Force Association and of the Kiantone Historical Society. Mr. Hohman enjoyed hunting, gardening, reading, genealogy and being outdoors. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church, Frewsburg, with the Rev. Joseph Gulio officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation is from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Peterson Funeral Home, Frewsburg, where there will be a Christian wake at 3:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the CCD program at Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church or Hospice Chautauqua County, 4840 W. Lake Road, Mayville N.Y. 14757.

Ruth Ann Chance

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. - Ruth Ann Chance, Guntersville, Ala., died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, at her home at the age of 51. She was a daughter of Robert W. and Ardena Mae (Pryor) Chance and was a native of Nevada. Surviving are a brother, Robert Chance, Nevada; and three sisters, Mildred Harigle and Barbara Chance, Bucyrus; and Roberta Scully, Crestline. Ms. Chance was employed in the housekeeping department at Marshall Medical Center North in Alabama. She enjoyed sailing, growing plants and cats. Ms. Chance's body was donated to medical research, and no service was held. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Marshall County or the American Cancer Society in care of Carr Funeral Home, PO Box 8, Guntersville AL 35976.

Jerry Beach

ARLINGTON - Jerry D. Beach, Findlay, died at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at his home. He was 65. Born July 6, 1938, in West Leipsic, he was a son of Edwin C. and Hazel M. (Kersh) Beach. Surviving are a son, Bradley, Arlington; three daughters, Dawn Feller, Arlington; and Nicolette "Nicki" von Stein and Amelia "Amy" Bower, both of rural Jenera; 16 grandchildren, Andria, Austin, Adam and Ashton Beach; Scott, Robyn, Lisa and David Feller; Marlene, Craig and Brent von Stein; and Jason, Jessica, Jerae, Justin and Jeri Bower; and a sister, Virginia Christoff, Bowling Green. A graduate of Arlington High School, Mr. Beach was a Brown Swiss dairy farmer and formerly was employed at Cooper Tire and Rubber Co. and IMS Inc. near Arlington. Mr. Beach was a member of Good Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in Arlington, where he also was a past deacon and past treasurer. He also was a past treasurer of the Lutheran Brotherhood. Mr. Beach was a member of the state and national Brown Swiss Breeders Association, Hancock County Farm Bureau, Hancock County Historical Society and a life member of the North American Fishing Club. He also was president of Hancock County Dairy Service Unit, was active in dairy promotion in Hancock County and was a big supporter of Hancock County's junior fair dairy program. Mr. Beach enjoyed playing basketball until recently, fishing and watching his grandchildren participate in sports. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Good Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Steve Ramsey officiating. Burial will be in Bishop Cemetery in Eagle Township. Visitation is at Crates Funeral Home in Arlington, from 2-9 p.m. Sunday, and for an hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Good Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church or to the organization of the donor's choice.

Lester Gottfried

Lester L. Gottfried died at 7:56 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at his home near Sycamore. He was 84. Born Jan. 17, 1919, in Salem Township, he was a son of Arthur and Blanche (Best) Gottfried. On Feb. 1, 1940, he married Martha Lawrence, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Gary, Tiffin; a daughter, Schareline Yeager, Tiffin; three grandchildren, Jennifer Norwood, Lori Yeager and James Gottfried; a stepgranddaughter, Gina Warner; six great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandson; three brothers; and four sisters. One brother and one sister are deceased. A lifetime farmer, Mr. Gottfried was retired. He also had worked for 12 years at Neumeister Bakery in Upper Sandusky and at the Wyandot County Nursing Home. He drove a school bus for McCutchenville Elementary School. He had attended Salem school. Mr. Gottfried was a 40-year member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Upper Sandusky. Hobbies included woodworking and gardening. Services will be private, with the Rev. Jerry Elsholz officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Upper Sandusky. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, McCutchenville Fire Department or Hospice of Wyandot County through Lucas Funeral Home, PO Box 207, Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

Mary Williams

TIFFIN - Mary Cordelia Williams, 85, died at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, in Autumnwood Care Center, Tiffin. She was born Jan. 29, 1918, in Upper Sandusky, to Lewis and Lena (Metzger) Slemmer. She married James Williams on May 27, 1938, and he is deceased. Surviving are a daughter, Sandy Griffin, Tiffin; three granddaughters, Lisa McClellan and Gayla Griffin-Smith, both of Tiffin; and Rachelle Griffin-Hall, Ashland; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Chuck Slemmer, Tiffin. A brother, Gene Slemmer, is deceased. Mrs. Williams was the first girl in Wyandot County to take flying lessons at the age of 16, and also was one of the youngest girls to do so in Ohio. She was selected to attend the Patricia Stevens modeling school to prepare for competing for the Miss Miami title. She attended beauty school in Miami, Fla., and became the owner-operator of Glamour Beauty Salon. She taught cosmetology at Georgeanne Academy in Tiffin, under the State School System and at Vanguard in Fremont. She retired in 1965. Mrs. Williams was a member of First Lutheran Church. A private graveside service for the immediate family only will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Old Mission Cemetery, Upper Sandusky. Friends may call from 6-8 this evening at Turner-Engle Funeral Home, Tiffin. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Seneca County.

Ruth Wilson

FOREST - Ruth Wilson died at Westminster Village in Muncie, Ind., where she had lived for more than 10 years, on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003. She was 98. Born June 8, 1905, in Forest, she was a daughter of Reva and Vernoll Stauffer. She married Rudford Kyle Wilson in 1928. He died in 1992. Surviving are a daughter, Diane Baer, Muncie; two grandchildren, Evan Evans, Bedford, Texas; and Kyle Evans, Austin, Texas; four great-grandchildren; and three nieces. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Lynn Wilson. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Mrs. Wilson taught piano and theory of music at Penn Hall, now Wilson College, in Chambers-burg, Pa. She was a member of Alpha Chi sorority for more than 75 years. Mrs. Wilson was a member of Plymouth Church of Shaker Heights. She also was a member of The Country Club and served on the women's board at St. Luke's Hospital in Cleveland. There is no visitation and a family graveside service will take place in Hueston Cemetery in Forest. Shields Funeral Home in Forest, is handling local arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Alpha Center, 315 S. Monroe St., Muncie IN 47305.

James Hagerman

CAREY - James F. Hagerman, formerly of Carey and more recently of Findlay, died at Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center in Findlay at 8:06 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2003. He was 71. Arrangements are pending at Stomabugh-Batton Fu-neral Home in Carey.

David Morris

David H. Morris Sr., 456 S. Seventh St., Upper Sandusky, died at Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community at 1:32 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, 2003. He was 66. Arrangements are pending at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home.

James Hagerman

CAREY - James F. Hagerman, formerly of Carey and more recently of Findlay, died in the emergency room of Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center in Findlay, at 8:06 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, 2003. He was 71. Born in Vanlue on Sept. 11, 1932, he was a son of Millard R. and Mary M. (Puchta) Hagerman. He married Carmen L. Semine on Jan. 22, 1983, in Carey. She survives. Also surviving are a son, James, Westerville; four daughters, Bambi Wright, Glenford; Susan Jacoby, Carey; Beth Bhattan, Glendale, Ariz.; and Mary Rebecca Hagerman, Tullahoma, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Millard Jr., Carey; and a sister, Donna Sherman, Fostoria. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Bryndon K.S. Anderson; and a brother, Raymond. Mr. Hagerman served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War from 1952-58. He also served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958-60 at Laon Air Base in France. Since 2000, Mr. Hagerman was a custodian at the Howard United Methodist Church in Findlay. He retired in 1995 from J.C. Penney after 19 years as maintenance supervisor. He was of Protestant faith. Mr. Hagerman was a member of Carey American Legion Post No. 344, Disabled American Veterans No. 43 in Findlay, the Navy Alumni Club, Air Force Association, AARP and Eagles Aeries No. 2198. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey, with the Rev. Joe Hotchkiss officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey, where military rites will be conducted. Visitation is at the funeral home from 2-9 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made to Dorcas Carey Public Library in care of Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey OH 43316.
