Rites Friday for Durham
Graveside services for Bobbie Durham, age 84 of Stillwater, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the Custer City Masonic Cemetery. Memorial services are planned later.

Durham died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at her home. She was born on Dec. 9, 1920 in Custer City, the daughter of Edward F. and Fanny (Goff) Evans.

She held a BS in home economics from Oklahoma State University and a Masters of Social Work from the University of Oklahoma.

Durham and her sister, Frances, operated Bobbie and Fran’s Dress Shop from 1955 to 1960.

She went on to be a social worker with the Oklahoma Department of Child Welfare from 1961 to 1965 when she went to Des Plaines, Ill. to be a social worker in the public schools there.

She retired there in 1981 and returned to Stillwater in 1982. Her hobbies were playing bridge and swimming.

A licensed social worker and certified clinical social worker in Oklahoma and Illinois, she was a member of the National Association of Social Workers, Academy of Social Workers and the Oklahoma Association of Social Workers.

A member of the First Christian Church, she was preceded in death, along with her parents, by three sisters, Edith Ann Evans, Helen Thorpe and Frances Wysowski.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Bernhardts’ Strode Funeral Home in Stillwater. Condolences may be emailed via the www.strodefh.com Web site.

Survivors include a daughter, Ginger L. Lynd of Stillwater; and a brother, E.F. “Bud” Evans of Custer City.

The family suggests that those who desire may make memorial contributions in Durham’s honor to the Stillwater Domestic Violence Services and Parents Assistance Center, 115 E. Fourth Ave., Stillwater, OK 74074.

Junior Shay services set at 3:26 pm
Funeral services for Harry “Junior” Shay, age 71 of Cushing, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Mt. Hope Cemetery north of Ripley with Steve Thomas officiating.
Shay died on Wednesday January 5, 2005 at his home in Cushing. He was born on Sept. 10, 1933 in Sayre, the son of Harry Luther and Bessie (Bonner) Shay. He received his early education in the Sayre Schools and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Shay went on to work as a pressman for Moore Business Forms. He was a member of the VFW and was past post commander for the V.F.W. Post No. 4465 in Clinton. Shay had also served as district commander of the VFW.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Palmer and Marler Funeral Home in Cushing.

Survivors include a son, Harry Russell Shay of Cleveland, Okla.; two daughters, Deaunna Thomas of Cushing, Rhonda Hogsett of Ripley; two brothers, Vernon Shay of Portland, Ore., Richard Shay of Pampa, Texas; a sister Leola Hayden of Clinton; and six grandchildren.

Shay was preceded in death by his parents.

Heitman burial set Wednesday at 5:45 pm
Graveside services for Marjorie Jane Heitman, 85 of Cheyenne, Wyo., will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Custer City Masonic Cemetery in Custer City.

She died Dec. 29, 2004 at the United Medical Center-West in Cheyenne.

She was born Feb. 11, 1919 in Custer City the daughter of Orval and Pansy Shepard. She lived there for seven years. She was a member of the Frontier United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband William G. "Bill" Heitman; and two infant sons Timothy Wayne Heitman and Thomas Dwayne Heitman.

She is survived by her son Warren R. Heitman of Cheyenne; a daughter Carolyn J. Morris of Cheyenne and five grandsons.

Funeral services were conducted in Cheyenne and burial is under the direction of the Kiseau-Lee Funeral Home of Clinton.

People who wish to make a memorial contribution may do so to the Frontier United Methodist Church.

Whiteman rites set Thursday at 5:44 pm

Funeral services for Harry H. Whiteman, Jr., 48, of Elk, City, will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 6, 2004, in the Pentecostal Church of God Indian Mission in Clinton, with Rev. Ramus Hicks and Rev. Delfred Whitecrow officiating.
Burial will conclude in the Clinton Indian Cemetery under the direction of the Stanley-Lee Funeral Home.

Whiteman was born August 1, 1956, in Clinton, OK, to Harry and Glorietta (Bearbow) Whiteman, Sr., and passed away in his Elk City home January 2, 2005.

He spent his early years in Clinton attending Clinton school and later worked in Tulsa, Elk City, and Clinton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Gloria "Doll" Whiteman, and a brother Robert "Bobby" Whiteman.

He is survived by a sister Mona Comoetsevah of Clinton; two brothers Frances Paul Whiteman of Clinton, and Nelson Curtis of Dermott, Ark.

A traditional Indian wake service will be held from 7-10 p.m. Wednesday evening in the Pentecostal Mission.

Korfman rites set for Thursday at 5:44 pm
Funeral services for Linda Joyce (Swihart) Korfman, 57 of Custer City, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Kiseau Memorial Chapel with Rev. John Flaming and Rev. Harold Goldmann officiating.
She died Jan. 3, 2005 at the O.U. Medical Center.

She was born June 15, 1946 in Nation City, Calif. the daughter of Farril and Alice Swihart Roberts. Her family moved to Oklahoma in the 1950s and she graduated from Binger High School in 1965.

She married Albert Korfman March 16, 1994 and they farmed together northwest of Custer City.

She enjoyed her family, farming, scrapbooking, crocheting, making jewelry and other crafts.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two infant sisters Alice Colleen and Carolyn Sue and one grandson Nathan.

She is survived by her husband of the home; two daughters, Stacie Bray and husband Bill of Tuttle, Christie Fontenot and husband Benji of Hinton; a son Justin Nelson and wife Jennifer of Hinton; a grandmother May Pearl Swihart of Oklahoma City; an uncle Samuel Swihart of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Ann Wilson of Weatherford, Phyllis Swihart of Corn; three brothers, Robby Swihart of Oklahoma City, Bobby Garrett of Henderson, Nev., Don Garrett of Fresno, Calif.; Stepchildren Sheryl Carver, Larry Korfman and Alberta Bentley.

Burial will follow the services at the Vicksburg Cemetery under the direction of the Kiseau-Lee Funeral Home of Clinton.

Gillilland services set for Tuesday at 4:38 pm

Funeral services for Sarena Lucille Gililland, 85, of Altus, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Wesley United Methodist Church in El Reno with Dr. Burrel McNaught officiating.

She died Dec. 31, 2004 at the Plantation Nursing Center.

She was born Oct. 20, 1919 in Moorewood the daughter of John and Rhoda (Fimple) Cates. She graduated from Weatherford High School and later graduated with a teaching certificate from Southwestern State College.

She taught for the Oklahoma State School for the Deaf in Sulphur, the Highway School south of Elk City, at Merritt, Muskogee and Burns Flat before her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents and two sisters, Irene and Iris.

She is survived by her husband J.R. Gililland of Altus; three sons, J. Roger Gililland and wife Jean of McLean, Va., Bruce R. Gililland of San Jose, Calif., Mark Gililland and wife Jan of Altus; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Lawnview Cemetery in Cordell under the direction of the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Chappel rites set Wednesday at 4:37 pm

Funeral services for Elva Eula Chappell, 89, of Clinton will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Holder officiating.
She died Jan. 1, 2005 in the United Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton.

She was born April 11, 1915 in Clinton the daughter of James A. Chappell and Dora Pearl (Stevens) Chappell. She attended all 12 years in the Clinton schools system and graduated in 1933. She also studied business at Southwestern State University in Weatherford.

She started working in 1940 for the Clinton Lumber Company and Elk Supply Company in the general office and continued to work for them until her retirement in 1982.

She joined the First United Methodist Church on Feb. 21, 1932. She was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women where she served on various committees.

She served as Secretary and Treasurer since its organization in 1997. She was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, which she joined in 1943. In 2003, she was honored by her chapter for completing 60 years of membership.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Richard Lee Chappell of Phoenix and Walter Edward Chappell of Hereford, Ariz.

Survivors include two sisters, Helen Chappell Miller of Harrah, Ruth Chappell Massey of Georgetown, Texas; two brothers, Gene Albert Chappell and wife Elizabeth of Fort Worth, J.A. Chappell, Jr. and wife Alberta of North Stonington, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Burial will follow the services and are under the direction of the Kiseau-Lee Funeral Home of Clinton.

Kauk services to be Tuesday at 4:37 pm

Funeral services for Eddie H. Kauk, 74 and lifetime Butler resident, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Butler Baptist Church with Roy Dobbs officiating.
He died Saturday morning, Jan. 1, 2005 at the Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City.

He was born Jan. 30, 1930 in Butler the son of Edward F. and Elizabeth (Fuhrer) Kauk. He graduated from Butler High School.

He married Norma Jean Smith March 7, 1953 in Butler. He worked as a farmer and a rancher for a number of years as well as being employed by the Custer County Barn.

He was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church and enjoyed tending cattle and all animals, especially cats. He played the guitar and enjoyed playing gospel and country music.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Elizabeth Mae; four sisters, Sarah Shelton, Elise Meek, Lydia Basler and Ruth Addington.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Marsha Denise Kauk of Butler; a sister Hilda Haney of Weatherford; and two brother, Jimmy Kauk and wife Loretta of Burns Flat and Gus Kauk and wife Oveda of Butler.

Burial will follow the services at the Shiloh Cemetery near Butler under the direction of the Kiseau-Lee Funeral Home.

The family suggests those wishing to give memorial contributions may do so to the Custer County Animal Sanctuary. The mailing address is 1223 North Ill., Weatherford, OK, 73096.

Billy Kelton services set at 12:16 pm

Funeral services for Billy C. Kelton, age 72 of Fort Smith, Ark., will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Fentress Mortuary Chapel at Fort Smith with burial in the National Cemetery there.

Kelton died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at Fort Smith, Ark.

He was a mechanic for J.D. Meyers Co., an Army veteran and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. Kelton was a recipient of three Bronze Stars.

His wife, Velma Wade, preceded him in death.

Visitation was scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Fort Smith funeral home.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Jewellyn Gregory of Van Buren, Ark., Nancy Carol Mello of Vista, Calif.; two sons, Bill Kelton of Clinton, Charles Ray Kelton of Lavaca, Ark.; a sister, Diane Chatman of Van Buren, Ark.; three brothers, Ralph Kelton of Van Buren, Ark., Karl Kelton of Fort Smith, Ark., Dale Kelton of Bloomer, Ark.; 10 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

The family suggests that those who desire may make memorial contributions in Kelton’s honor to the Disabled American Veterans, 6200 S. Zero, Fort Smith, AR 72903.

Ernie Nichols services set at 12:15 pm

Graveside services for Ernie Nichols, age 59 of Shawnee, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday in the Bethel Cemetery with Bob Harmon of the Bethel United Methodist Church officiating.
Nichols died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at Shawnee. He was born on June 23, 1945 in Suffolk County, England, the son of Howard Earl and Mary Theresa (Williams) Nichols.

Nichols came to the United States on the Queen Mary in 1946 at the age of 10 months. The family then moved to Shawnee.

He lived in Sacramento, Calif. for five years and then moved to Clinton where he lived for 25 years.

He had lived in Vinita for eight years.

Nichols was a 1964 graduate of Bethel High School. He worked as a personal care assistant.

He was married to Afton Rose in Miami, Okla. on Dec. 1, 1997. Nichols enjoyed fishing, playing dominoes and dancing.

Preceding him in death were his mother, Mary Nichols; his grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cooper Funeral Home in Tecumseh.

Survivors include his wife, Afton Nichols of the home; a son, Rocky Nichols and his wife, Alice, of Shawnee; a daughter, Rhonda Walker of Durant; a granddaughter, Cheyenne Walker of Durant; a grandson, Zack Knox of Shawnee; his father, Howard Nichols of Shawnee; a brother, Thomas H. Nichols of Kingston; uncles, Bill Nichols of Shawnee, Rusty Nichols of Milwaukee, Ore. and Pat Williams of England.

Gladys Jones rites Tuesday at 1:18 pm

Funeral services for Gladys Mary Jones, age 79 and a longtime Clinton resident, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Custer Avenue Baptist Church in Clinton with Rev. Cameron Williams officiating.

Gladys Alexander was born on June 21, 1924 on the family farm near Putnam, the daughter of Leonard and Nellie (Munson) Alexander. She died early Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at the United Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton.

Jones spent her early years on the farm near Putnam. At the age of five, she moved with her family to a farm west of Arapaho.

She attended the Arapaho Schools and graduated there in 1942.

She married Warren LaFever, and he preceded her in death in the early 1980’s.

On Oct. 30, 1988 she married Udel “Hoot” Jones, and they made their home in Clinton where she worked at Kelley’s Paint Store and the Dairy Queen.

She spent most of her working life, however, babysitting in her home.

She was a charter member of the Custer Avenue Baptist Church and also a member of AARP.

In her spare time she enjoyed flower gardening and crocheting.

Preceding her in death, along with her parents and first husband, were a brother, Lloyd; and a sister, Elizabeth Bozarth.

Burial will conclude in the Arapaho Cemetery under the direction of the Stanley-Lee Funeral Home in Clinton.

Survivors include her husband, Udell, of the home; a daughter, Debbie Crumpler and her husband, Bob, of Raleigh, N.C.; two grandsons, Nathan Wade and his wife, Patti, of Holly Springs, Fla., Tim Wade of North Carolina; three great granddaughters, Brittani, Bethani, Taiyler; a great grandson, Tim Wade Jr.; a sister, Beryl Kelley and her husband, Bill, of Clinton; and a brother, Myron Alexander and his wife, Ruth, of Florida.
