Vargas rites held at 5:07 pm
Mrs. Pat (Lemon) Vargas, sister of Norma (Mrs. LeRoy) Gemaehlich, died recently in San Diego, Calif.
She was a native of Clinton and attended the Clinton schools for several years before moving to California in the 1940’s.

Mrs. Vargas is survived by her husband, three children and six grandchildren in San Diego and several relatives in this area.

Strader rites Wednesday at 5:06 pm
Graveside funeral rites for Mrs. Zelma Lee Strader will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Lone Star Cemetery north of Rocky with Don Diffendaffer officiating.
Mrs. Strader died Easter Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Purcell Municipal Hospital. She was born on Jan. 19, 1931 east of Fay, the daughter of James Austin and Georgia Pearl (Tomlin) Elston.

A graduate of Rocky High School, she lived and worked in Sentinel for many years and then moved to the B&K Nursing Home in Hobart before later living with her son in Purcell after which she resided in the Wadley Care Center in Purdell.

She was a member of the Church of the First Born in Rocky where she was baptized on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1944.

Her first marriage was to Robert (Bob) Baldwin on Nov. 3, 1951. He preceded her in death and in January of 1957 she was married to Wallace Lee Strader.

In addition to her first husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford Elston, Austin Eugen Elston and Donnie Elston.

Arrangements are under the direction of the McClure Funeral Home of Cordell.

Survivors include a son, Jim Baldwin and his wife, Michelle, of Purcell; two sisters, LaDena Ross of Moore, Janice (Wise) Olikver of Minco; two brothers, Bobby and his wife, Nadine, of Hobart, Russell and his wife, Linda, of Yakima, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Betty Elston of Cordell; 15 nieces and nephews; and two step grandchildren, Dustin Woods and Casey Hammond, both of Purcell.

Watson rites set at 3:40 pm
Funeral services for Grady B. Watson, Jr., 77, Rogers, Ark. resident, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Bentonville, Ark. with burial at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Resthaven Cemetery in Oklahoma City.

Watson died Thursday, April 12, at the Heritage Park Nursing Home in Rogers. He was born on Nov. 16, 1923 in Cordell, the son of Grady B. and Opal Brown Watson. He worked for 32 years as a jet mechanic at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City.

Arrangements are through the Burns Funeral Home in Rogers, Ark.

Ira Hester, Sr. rites Tuesday at 3:39 pm
Funeral services for Ira Joe Hester, Sr., age 82, Clinton resident, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bethany Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Mucker officiating.
Hester died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at his Clinton home. He was born on March 18, 1919 at Weleetka, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Hester.

He was married to Jo Ann Murphy in 1945 in Okmulgee, and they moved to California where he worked for the railroad.

After moving back to Clinton in 1948 he worked for Acme Brick for many years.

They then moved to Pasadena, Calif. in 1958 and he worked for the City Sanitation Department there until his retirement in 1993.

Hester returned to Clinton in 1998 to be closer to family. He enjoyed fishing and visiting with friends.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Jo Ann; a brother, Robert Hester; a sister, Lulu Murphy; and three great grandchildren.

Burial will be in the Clinton Cemetery under the direction of the Stanley-Lee Funeral Home in Clinton.

Survivors include two daughters, Glenda Atkinson of Clinton, Linda McCarther of California; four sons, Frankie of Las Vegas, Nev., Robert, Johnny and Ira Jr., all of Clinton; 18 grandchildren; and 27 great grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Monday.

Dark-Havens funeral held at 3:38 pm
Funeral services for Clinton alumna Mrs. Clydean Dark- Havens, 68, Vici resident, were held on March 31 at the First Christian Church in Nash with her pastor, Rev. Bennie Walker of the Vici United Methodist Church, officiating.
Mrs. Dark-Havens died Wednesday, March 28, 2001. She was born on Oct. 30, 1932 southeast of Colony, the daughter of Clyde Milton and Ruby Mae Cardwell.

After spending her early school years at Colony she attended Cordell High School for a period and graduated from Clinton High School in 1950. She enjoyed the CHS reunions and always remained close to her former classmates.

On April 28, 1961 she was married to Jerry Dark. She enjoyed watching all types of sports, crocheting, reading and gardening.

A past member of the Zeta Chi chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, she held various offices including that of president during her membership.

She had been a District II coordinator and had been chosen several times as “Woman of the Year” by ESA.

She also was a past member of the Nash Town Council and the New Nashville Association. During her years in Nash she was a member of the First Christian Church.

On Nov. 25 of last year she was married to Homer Bruce Havens at Vici. Leading them in their vows was Clydean’s son, Scott Dark, in the Vici United Methodist Church which became their church home.

Preceding her in death were her father, Clyde Cardwell; a sister, Carol Kennedy; and a brother, Rodney Clay Cardwell.

Burial was in the Byard Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Bruce Havens of the home in Vici; a daughter, Sally Dark MacIntyre of Alva; a son, Jaymes Dark, and his wife, Dana, of Fort Worth, Texas; a son, Scott Dark of Perry; her mother, Ruby Mae Cardwell of Vici; four sisters, Rebeca Scates and her husband, Richard, of Chandler, Ariz., Joy Shaw and her husband, Charles, of Vici, Vickey Wirtz and her husband, Chris, of Medford, Janie Loman and her husband, Lynn, of Custer City; five brothers, L.D. Cardwell of Tulsa, Archie Cardwell of Moorpark, Calif., Tom Cardwell and Dan Cardwell, both of Pryor, Royce Cardwell and his wife, J.J. of Tulsa, and Rick Cardwell and his wife, Jarita, of Fort Gibson; a brother-in-law, Danny Kennedy and his wife, Ramona, of Medford; and five grandchildren, Will McIntyre of Alva, Jamie Dark of Fort Worth, Gabrielle, J.C. and Jamie Dark of Perry.

Maddox rites set at 5:06 pm
Funeral services for LaVonne T. Maddox, 84, Colony resident, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel at the Lockstone Funeral Home in Weatherford with burial in the Greenwood Cemetery at Weatherford.

Mrs. Maddox died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at the Corn Heritage Village. She was born on Nov. 27, 1916 at Sentinel, the daughter of Henry Dee and Buena (Cable) Tarlton. She served as a postmaster in Colony for 21 years.

Strong rites set at 5:05 pm
Funeral services for for Mrs. Reva Fay Strong, 84, Hydro resident, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the First Christian Church at Hydro with burial in the Hydro Masonic Cemetery under the direction of the Lockstone Funeral Home in Weatherford.
Mrs. Strong died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City. She was born on Oct. 13, 1916 in Hydro, the daughter of Oda F. and Alberta (Farrell) Tickel.

The family suggests that those who desire may make memorial contributions in her honor to the First Christian Church of Hydro Mission Fund.

John Andrew Tapp at 4:11 am
John Andrew Tapp, longtime Ponca City resident, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was 75.

Requiem Eucharist will be Thursday, 2 p.m., in Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kenneth Armstrong, rector and celebrant, and the Rev. Steven Mallory, deacon, officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Trout Funeral Home. Members of Ponca Lodge 83, AF&AM will provide Masonic graveside services and the U.S. Army from Fort Sill will provide military honors.

Born Aug. 28, 1925, at Mountain Grove, Ark., he was the son of John Orville and Elpha Aiken Torkelson Tapp. At an early age he moved with his family to Osage County where he attended schools at McCord and Burbank.

During World War II, John served as a combat infantryman with the U.S. Army in Europe, earning two bronze service stars.

On Oct. 10, 1946 he and the former Velma Louise Hill were married in Ponca City. The couple made their home here, and both were employed by Conoco.

He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, the American Legion and VFW, and was a 32nd degree Mason. John loved horses and the great outdoors.

Surviving are his wife, Velma of the home; a son, Larry Douglas Tapp and his wife Faith of Ponca City; a grandson, Scott Andrew Tapp of Ponca City; a brother, O.C. "Tuffy" Tapp of Ponca City; and two sisters, Nellie Marrs and Ann Mauk, both of Ponca City.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Lee Tapp on Oct. 27, 1951.

Casket bearers will be Jon Kennedy, Richard Winterrowd, Ed Schmauch, Everette VanHoesen, Bruce Evans and Don Lambring.

Memorials may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 109 North Thirteenth, Ponca City, Okla. 74601.

The family will receive friends at the Trout Funeral Home this evening from 6 to 7 p.m.

Esther Pauline Freeze at 4:10 am
BRAMAN - Esther Pauline Freeze, former resident of Braman, died in the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation of Caldwell in Caldwell, Kan. She was 94.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at the Braman Cemetery with the Rev. Tony Baumgardner of Caldwell, Kan., officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Roberts and Son Funeral Home in Blackwell.

Esther Pauline Freeze was born on Dec. 15, 1906, in rural Cooley, Okla. As a young girl, she was raised in an orphanage, and, at the age of six, she was adopted from an orphanage in Kremlin, where she attended Braman schools. She married Walter Freeze on March 24, 1926, in Newkirk, and they settled in Braman. After her marriage, she helped her husband in his trucking business. In 1953, they moved to Sugar City, Colo., where they farmed until 1968. They then returned to Caldwell, Kan., to make their home. After her husband died on Sept. 7, 1990, she began caring for elderly people until she retired. She then moved to South Haven, Kan., where she lived for four years before returning to Caldwell.

Survivors include three daughters, Marie Cunningham of Caldwell, Kan., Jessie Cochran of Sapulpa and Edna Bradford of Dallas; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and a son, Merle "Buddy" Freeze.

Memorial contributions can be made to South Haven Township Library, P.O. Box 227, South Haven, Kan. 67140.

Lynn Babb funeral set at 10:15 am
Funeral services for Lennie Lee “Lynn” Babb, age 89 of Clinton, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church at Clinton with Rev. Shane Hall officiating.

Babb died early Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at the United Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton. She was born on Sept. 17, 1916 in Holdenville, the daughter of Steve and Amensia (Fisher) Cariker.

Reared in Holdenville, she married Otho Babb there in 1930.

The young couple moved to Tulsa during the Depression and times were really hard for the family.

She then returned to Holdenville and attended beauty college before moving to Wewoka where she owned and operated Lynn’s Beauty Salon for more than 50 years.

She married Cecil Argo in 1952, and he preceded her in death.

She moved to Clinton in 1987 to be close to family, moving her beauty shop here which she continued to operate until the mid 1990’s when she was forced to retire by failing health.

She had been a resident of the Methodist Center for the past three months.

A member of the First Baptist Church in Wewoka for many years, she had transferred her membership to Clinton.

She was a member of the Oklahoma Cosmetology Association and was on the Thunderbird Hair Fashion Committee of Oklahoma for several years. She also was a member of the National Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association.

Preceding her in death were five sisters, Donnie Linker, Lavernia Arthur, Leora Bishop, Estella Hishaw, Nora Lancaster; a granddaughter, Juli Ronan; and a great-great great grandson, Mykol Babb.

Burial will conclude in the Clinton Cemetery under the direction of the Stanley-Lee Funeral Home in Clinton.

Survivors include a daughter, Arleen Harris of Clinton; a son, Cliffton Babb and his wife, Naomi, of Seminole; two granddaughters, Toni Lee and her husband, Troy, of Clinton, Jacque Morlan and her husband, Darrell, of Arapaho; three grandsons, Robert Hargrove and his wife, Cindy, of Moore, Gregg Babb and his wife, Judy, and Steven Babb, all of Seminole; 14 great grandchildren; a great-great grandson; a brother, Oran Cariker of Duncan; a sister, Alene Conner of Bixby; and several nieces and nephews, including Arlie Arthur and his wife, Betty, of Clinton.

Marion Toland funeral slated at 2:01 pm
Funeral services for Marion H. Toland, age 83 of Hutchinson, Kan., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 43rd and Plum in Hutchinson.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Fairview Cemetery at St. John, Kan. with military honors.

Toland died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Center. He was born on April 12, 1922 in St. John, Kan., the son of Earl E. and Mabel Elizabeth Millsap Toland.

A 1940 graduate of St. John High School and a 1947 graduate of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, he had been a resident of Hutchinson since 1952.

Prior to his retirement in 1987 he was a financial controller for the National Cooperative Refinery Association.

He was a lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had served a mission for the church as well as multiple times as a bishop for the church.

Toland served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and retired as an Air Force major after 30 years of active and reserve duty.

He married Mary Catherine “Katie” Blake on March 27, 1946 in St. John, Kan., and she preceded him in death on Aug. 5, 2004.

Arrangements are under the direction of Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson, Kan.

Survivors include four sons, David M. Toland and his wife, Pat, of Topeka, Kan., Timothy B. Toland and his wife, Dee, of Clinton, John H. Toland and his wife, Debby, of Mounds, Mark E. Toland of Hutchinson, Kan.; a sister, Wamoth Allison of St. John, Kan.; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were a sister, Joyce Blake; and a brother, Donnie Toland.

Friends will be received at the church at 518 E. 43rd in Hutchinson from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
The family suggests that memorial contributions in Toland’s honor be made to the Marion Toland Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.
