Hubbart
Graveside services were held Saturday, January 17, at Pioneer Park Cemetery in Beaver for Warren Hubbart, 82, of Roswell, New Mexico who died January 15, 2004. The Reverend Torry Curtis of United Methodist Church in Beaver officiated.
Warren was born October 29, 1921 in Lamont, Oklahoma to H.H. and Hilda Hubbart. He graduated from Tonkawa High School and attended O.S.U. for one year. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy Air Force in 1942, and served at North Naval Air Station in Norman for 39 months until he was discharged.
He married Cleo Seese on November 15, 1942. She survives him at the family home in Roswell. He and Cleo moved to Roswell in 1996, and they enjoyed their retirement years traveling, playing golf and just enjoying life.
During the years 1949 to 1978, Hub operated Hackett Auto Supply in Beaver, and was involved in various civic organizations.
In 1978, Hub and Cleo moved to Amarillo, where he was associated with a golf center until his retirement in 1987.
Survivors include one daughter, Kathryn Sue Edwards and her husband, Buddy, of Roswell; grandchildren, Pam and Billy Vivens of Amarillo, and Stacy and Greg Carrasco, and Steven Davis of Roswell; and great-grandchildren, Alex, Grant and Chloe Vivens, and Samantha and Hayden Carrasco. He was preceded in death by a daughter, JoLynn.
Myers
Prycie Perpont Myers was born on December 17, 1912 in Beaver County to Leslie Travis and Versa Dee (Hill) Adelman. She graduated from high school and attended college at Panhandle A & M at Goodwell.
She was a member of the First Christian Church since 1922. Prycie was married to Robert Boston, who left her and the children. Then she supported her two young children by working at the court house. Prycie married Floyd Myers on February 16, 1942 in Liberal, Kansas.
Prycie died in the Beaver County Memorial Hospital January 20, 2004 at the age of 91.
She was a member of the Balko Sunflowers and the Rebekahs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd, who died on October 17, 1990. A sister, Geraldine Adelman, and a brother, Travis Eugene Adelman.
She is survived by her son, John Travis Boston of Elmwood; her daughter, Mae Dee Durbin of Grove, Oklahoma; one brother, James Keith Adelman of Creed, Colorado; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three great, great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family requests memorials to the Beaver County Nursing Home or a charity of choice.
Prycie was known as a "neat" person, a good cook and homemaker, and enjoyed gardening. She also knitted and crocheted articles to give to her friends. Some of her friends related that she was somewhat of a perfectionist and wanted things done right. When she and Floyd retired about 1980, they built a fine home in Beaver that they enjoyed for many years.
Funeral services were Saturday, January 24, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. from the Beaver First Christian Church with Bob Blazek officiating. Interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Balko.
Bradley
Georgia E. Bradley, 88 died Thursday, January 15, 2004 at the Beaver County Nursing Home. She was born December 11, 1915 to George Alvin and Lou Vena Reinmuth in Beaver.
Georgia married W. Roy Ragsdale in Clayton, New Mexico in 1939. To this union their daughter Jacque was born. Roy preceded her in death. She married H.E. (Brad) Bradley on April 20 1963, who preceded her in death on March 20, 1990.
Georgia graduated from Beaver High School with the class of 1933 and attended Oklahoma State University. Georgia worked in the family owned cleaning business until her retirement. She served on the Pioneer Park Board, was a member of the United Methodist Church of Beaver and was also a member of the Eastern Star organization, serving as past worthy advisor and past mother advisor to the Rainbow Girls. Her passions were her rose and flower gardening and her many travels throughout the country with Brad.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Gene K. Reinmuth. She leaves to mourn her passing, daughter, Jacque Broadfoot and husband, Danny of Beaver, three grandchildren, April Jamison and husband Bill and Mike Broadfoot of Beaver, Corey Broadfoot and wife Joan of Lexington, Kentucky and three great grandchildren, Ashley Jamison, Trey Jamison, and Hannah Broadfoot.
In lieu of lowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Beaver County Nursing Home or charity of choice.
Graveside services were Monday, January 19, 2004 in Pioneer Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. with Wayne Moore officiating.
Perkins
Ledru Kenneth Perkins was born July 7, 1918 to Forest Grant and Estella Mahala (Strong) Perkins.
He was the youngest of three children, and was born on the family farm northwest of Gate on the Cimarron River. He attended Country Garland School.
Ledru was united in marriage to Wanetta May Shepherd on December 25, 1937 at Knowles. To their union five children were born, Jessie Eugene, Jimmie Roger, Jerry K., Gilbert Leery and Jetta Jo. Ledru and Wanetta recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary together.
Ledru farmed and ranched his entire life and was also employed for 18 years by Beaver County District #1 as a motor grader operator and later a shop foreman. Upon retirement from the county he continued to farm and ranch until his death.
In their earlier years, Ledru and Wanetta enjoyed dancing and playing cards with friends and neighbors. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends to visit and eat. He always enjoyed a "good laugh" and had a keen sense of humor and wit. He delighted in "testing" people (when they entered the house) by asking them what direction the wind was in - which of course usually nobody knew.
Ledru died at the age of 85 years, 5 months, and 25 days in the Woodward Regional Hospital at Woodward. He was preceded in death by his parents Grant and Estella, son Jessie in 1990, two sisters Leta Cline and Gladys Berends.
Ledru leaves as his survivors his loving wife Wanetta of the home. Three sons, Jimmie and wife Mary of Dodge City, Kansas; Jerry and wife Kaye of Nashville, Tennessee; Gilbert and wife Mary of Gate; daughter Jody Paine and husband John of Gate; and daughter in law LaJauna Perkins of Amarillo, Texas; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, 2 nieces, 1 nephew, other relatives and many friends.
Services were in the Gate Cemetery on Monday, January 5, 2004 with Rev. Randy Lawson officiating.
Vogt
Henry J. Vogt, Jr. was born on April 12, 1926 to Henry Jacob Vogt, Sr. and Mary M. Penner Vogt on a family farm southwest of Corn. He attended the Pleasant View School and later Corn High School, graduating in 1944.
On April 7, 1944, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior. Henry attended Tabor College, graduating in the spring of 1947 with an Associate of Arts Degree. While at college, he met Margie Ruth Leppke. He married Margie on August 10, 1947 at the Ebenfield Mennonite Brethren Church.
The made their home in Cowden, Oklahoma. He was an active member of the Corn Mennonite Brethren Church serving as secretary, teaching many Sunday school classes and helping to rebuild the church after it burned in 1949.
In 1981, Margie passed away with cancer. Henry continued farming and in 1986, he married Bessie L. Penner. They became members of the Bible Mennonite Brethren Church and later after their house fire moved to the Village at Cordell in April of 2002.
Henry died on January 3, 2004, at the age of 77 at his home in Cordell.
Survivors include his wife, Betsy of the home; sons, Kenneth of Tonkawa; Bryan and wife, Debbie of Altus; daughter, Mary Beth Frantz and husband, Steve of Balko; step-daughter, Dianne Lygrisse and husband, Glenn of Wichita, Kansas; step-son, Ronald Penner and wife, Melanie of Wichita; brother, J. Arnold Vogt and wife, Nina of Denver City, Texas; and Leo George Vogt of Mexica, Texas; brother-in-law, Abner Penner of Kingsboro, California; and Wilbur Leppke and wife, Helen of Peabody, Kansas; sister-in-law, Laura Vogt of Weatherford; five grandchildren; step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lou Vogt Penner, sisters-in-law, Lula Mae Eisiminger and husband, Ralph, Ruby Gaede and husband, Elmer.
Funeral services were Tuesday at the Bible Mennonite Brethren Church in Cordell, Oklahoma.
Anderson
Lloyd Eugene Anderson, 75, known as Gene Anderson died Tuesday, January 13, 2004.
He was born May 2, 1928 in Beaver. He was married to his wife Pauline for 58 years. He and Pauline were engaged in the retail shoe business for 30 years in Elkhart, Kansas.
Besides his wife of the home, his survivors include: a brother, Alpha Ray Anderson of Springfield, California; two sons, Rick Anderson of Lansing, Kansas and Larry Anderson of Central, South Carolina; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
McLeod
Claude E. McLeod, 81, died on Friday, January 16, 2004 in Wichita.
Mr. McLeod was born August 2, 1922 in Gate, the son of Orvel and Maurie (Hedges) McLeod. He worked for Middlewest Freightways and also was a rancher and a farmer.
Survivors include his wife Ila McLeod, son, Terry and his wife Elise McLeod, nephew, Rodney Dixon and niece Rena Cope all of Wichita.
Services were Monday, January 19, 2004.
Harrington
Lucile Irene Harrington was born on May 11, 1905.She was born in the half-dugout sod shanty on her parents’ homestead in the Bellview School District, north of old Floris in Beaver County, Oklahoma Territory. She died on November 25, 2003 at Edmond, Oklahoma.
She was the oldest daughter of George Alvon and Addie Ethel (Wilgus) Hutchens who had migrated from near LaPlata, Missouri.
Irene graduated from Forgan High School in 1924 and attended college one year then continued her education during summer school and began teaching the first grade classes at Forgan in 1925. She is still honored by her surviving students as "Miss Irene."
In Dodge City, Kansas on September 3, 1927, she married Robert Floyd Harrington. They lived with Floyd’s widowed father, R.B., north of Forgan for the first two years of their married life. To this union their only child, Iris Roberta, was born. Shortly after, they moved to Alva for Floyd to complete his college degree.
With Irene’s expert assistance Floyd became a member of the Oklahoma legislature. In 1940, she became an early member of "putting hubby through graduate school" society. Upon retirement they built a home in Beaver and lived there two years before moving back to the Oklahoma City area to be near their daughter, Iris Lochner.
In addition to her daughter, Iris Lochner, and her son and his family, her younger sister, Christine Julien, and her aunt, Aline Johnson survives her. Both are of Liberal, Kansas. Her sister-in-law, Faye Day of Forgan and a niece from Amarillo, Texas also survive. Her nephews and nieces reside in Liberal, Forgan, Turpin, Elkhart, LaCrosse, as well as Michigan, Oregon, and Colorado.
Services were Saturday, November 29 at Edmond, Oklahoma.
The family suggests donations to the Forgan School Library, Forgan, Oklahoma 73938 or the American Heart Assocation.
Schmatjen
Wanda Wilma (Wycoff) Schmatjen, age 80, died November 25, 2003 at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City, Kansas. She was born on August 9, 1923, in Beaver County, the daughter of Archie P. and Flo (Kennell) Wycoff.
She was a member of the First Christian Church of Dodge City, Kansas.
After growing up in Beaver, she moved to Dodge City in 1959. She worked as a bookkeeper and clerk for the Ross Plumbing and Heating Company in Dodge City. She later moved back to Shattuck, Oklahoma and worked for the Shattuck Hospital as a switchboard operator. She then returned to Dodge City and resided there for the past thirty years.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter Lila, and a half-brother. Survivors include a niece; Sue Minette of Colorado Springs, Colorado and five cousins.
Graveside services were at the Fairview Cemetery at Clearlake on Friday, November 28 with Mr. Larry Williams presiding.
Roney-Boes
Margaret Avo Roney-Boes, longtime resident of Tulsa, died Saturday, November 22, 2003, in Tulsa, at the age of 83 years.
She was born July 19, 1920, in Garfield, Arkansas to Joseph R. and Louisa (Byler) Park. She was a graduate of Garfield High School with the class of 1937. She was married March 13, 1939 to Harry Roney who preceded her in death in June 1961.
She spent most of her life as a homemaker. She was a member of Braden Park Baptist Church, of Tulsa, the President’s Women’s Ministry Center and participated in the Meals on Wheels. She especially enjoyed reading and sewing.
She was preceded in death by her first husband and the father of her children, Harry Wayne Roney; second husband, Glen Pitts and third husband, Ralph Boes and one brother, Marvin Park.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Teresa Roney of Tulsa; three daughters and son-in-law, Donna and her husband, Troy Bowles of Beaver; Rita Bell of Tulsa; Leta Calloway of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; one brother and his wife Russell and Rosalee Park of Tulsa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at the Mowery Funeral Service Chapel of Owasso with Dr. Darryl DeBorde and Reverend Jess Canafax officiating. Serving as casket bearers were Gary Cassingham, Mike Cassingham, Chad Roney, Robert Calloway, Larry Aston, Kevin Bell, Jason Calloway and Billy Martin.
Committal services and interment followed at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa.
Winchell
Martha Dobson Winchell, age 94, died Saturday, November 29, 2003 at Edward Abraham Memorial Home in Canadian, Texas.
She was born September 17, 1909 at Eric, Oklahoma, the daughter of Charles and Eddie Lee (Nelmes) Dobson.
She had been a longtime resident of Liberal, Kansas and also the Balko area. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church, Liberal and the MacArthur Sunday School Class.
On August 20, 1947, she married George R. Winchell, Jr. at Liberal. He died December 3, 2001.
Survivors include one son, Chuck Winchell of Balko; one stepson, George R. "Rick" Winchell, III of Abilene, Texas; one sister, Leota Butler of Arlington, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a step-daughter, Ruth Joan Dougherty and a brother, Thomas Preston Dobson.
Funeral services were Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in Liberal, Kansas with Reverend David Bagwell presiding.

Meier
Reinhold Dave Meier was born January 31, 1938 at Beaver to Reinhard and Emily (Kirschman) Meier.
Following his graduation from Darrouzett High School in 1958, R.D. began his farming operation. In 1961, he enlisted in the United States Army, and served in Korea as a Chaplain’s Assistant. In 1963 he was discharged and returned to Beaver County to resume his farming operation.
On April 12, 1967, he married Julene Herber at Shattuck, where they made their home. Mr. Meier went in partnership with Vernon Kemp and they operated a custom harvesting service. R.D. and Julene then moved to Booker where they lived for numerous years, before making their home on the family farm, where they have resided since.
He was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Darrouzett. R.D. was also an active member of the American Legion, Kiowa Post #635 of Darrouzett. He loved to cook, enjoying gardening, but was famous for baking pies and his homemade ketchup and dill pickles.
Mr. Meier died November 30, 2003 at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo at the age of 65 years, nine months and 29 days.
He was preceded in death by his father.
R.D. is survived by his wife Julene, of the home; three daughters, Connie Weatherbie and her husband, Dan, of Canyon, Texas; Sharon Meier, of Dickenson, Texas; Jan Slovacek, and her husband Gary of Hitchcock, Texas; a son and his wife, David and Kathy Smith of Oklahoma City; his mother, Emily Meier, of Canadian, Texas; two sisters, Julie Moore of Colorado City, Texas and LaVerta Schafer and her husband, Jerry, of Canadian, Texas; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and numerous relatives and friends.
Services were December 2 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Darrouzett, Texas with Pastor Bill Griffin officiating.
Cates
Marieta Irene Cates was born September 8, 1926 at Sylvia, Kansas, to John and Blanche (Rothrock) Snowbarger. She grew up in the Leoti, Kansas area, graduating from Russell Springs High School in 1943. Later, she attended Kansas State University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree. Marieta then taught school for two years in Liberal, Kansas.
On October 31, 1949 she married J.E. Cates at Clayton, New Mexico, and they lived in Dodge City, Kansas for a time, before making their home in Beaver County.
She was an active member of the Victory Family Church in Perryton. Mrs. Cates enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and was an avid reader. Marieta was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. She loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and provide a shining example of how to Love the Lord.
Mrs. Cates died November 29, 2003 at her home at the age of 77 years, two months, and 21 days.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Craig, a daughter, Karen, a brother, Darrel, and her parents.
Marieta is survived by her husband, J.E., of the home; three sons, Steve Cates and his wife Cecelia, of Booker, Texas; Max Cates and his wife Loretta, of Oklahoma City; and Randy Cates of Booker; a daughter, Sharon McCance of Amarillo, Texas; six grandchildren, Shayla Messner, Theron Cates, Bryan Cates, Chad Cates, Lesa Johnson and Sarah McCance; five great-grandchildren, Kathryn Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Harli Johnson, Mackenzie Messner, and Landrey Johnson; three sisters, Wavelynn Cates, and her husband, Carl, of Perryton, Texas; Eulela Goerlitz, and her husband, Alton, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; and Darlene Mathers, of Phoenix, Arizona; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Wednesday; December 3, at 2:00 p.m., at the Victory Family Church in Perryton. The Reverend Marlon Sparks officiated.
Hauth
Geraldine "Jerry" Hauth, 90, died Sunday, December 7, 2003 at the Beaver County Nursing Home in Beaver.
She was born June 25, 1913, at the family farm near the Clearlake Community west of Laverne. She was the daughter of Walter Waite and Emma Grace (Crawford) Moore.
In April of 1930, she married Denver Hauth at Buffalo, Oklahoma. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant daughter, Wilma Olene Hauth; brothers Ray Moore, Edwin Howard, Myrel Moore, Bert Moore, Glendon Moore; grandson; Robin Hennigh; grandson-in-law Maynard Chapman; and a son Wayne Denver Hauth.
Survivors include daughters Joy Hennigh and husband Jay of Laverne and Bonnie McKee and husband J.C., also of Laverne; seven grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren and thirteen great-great grandchildren.
Services were Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at the Fairview Cemetery with the Reverend Carol Reich presiding.
Goss
Rev. John Goss, Jr. of Adams, died on November 15, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas.
John Newton Goss, Jr. was born September 5, 1930 in Edmond, Oklahoma, the son of John Newton and Minnie Maude McCauley Goss, Sr.
John attended school in Oklahoma City and graduated from Capitol Hill High School. He attended one year at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Oklahoma and then transferred to Panhandle A & M in Goodwell, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in 1951. He then attended one year at Golden Gate Seminary at Berkley, California.
On July 22, 1952, John was united in marriage to Dortha Nell Johnston in Adams, Oklahoma. Dortha died September 6, 1999.
On December 29, 2002, John was united in marriage to Patricia Cornell Kinsey.
John was a bi-vocational Pastor, working at farming and carpentry and cabinet work. He built many of the cabins at Gibson Baptist Assembly along with the swimming pool. He was pastor at Felt, Forgan, Hardesty, Bethel, Springer, New Mexico, Booker, Texas, Tucumcari, New Mexico, and currently in Adams, Oklahoma where he served as Pastor of the combined First Baptist Church and Mennonite Brethren Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Dortha, sister Ethel Marie Beckham and a niece Rhonda Beckham.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia of the home, one son, Jack Goss and his wife Linda of Perryton, Texas; three daughters, Debbie Ivy and her husband Ron of Aurora, Colorado, Donna Landes and her husband David of Amarillo, Texas, and Dorla Harris and her husband Keith of Perryton, Texas; eight grandchildren, Danielle, Kendall, Rachelle, Daurie, Darren, Keenan, Dalton, and Donisha; nine step grandchildren, Luke, Ryan, Mark, Sarah, Sage, Clayton, Garrett, Shay, and Carmen.
Funeral services were November 18, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in Hooker with Frank Marks officiating. Interment was in the Union Center Cemetery in Adams directed by the Roberts Brothers Funeral Home in Hooker.

Tregellas
Bertha Anna Peterman Tregellas, 101, of Perryton, died November 8, 2003.
Funeral services were held Monday, November 10, at Full Gospel Church, with Rev. Michael Waterbury officiating. Burial was in Ochiltree Cemetery, under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.
She was born February 6, 1902 in Ellsworth, Kansas, and was a long-time resident of the area. Her family moved to Alva, Oklahoma in 1907. She married Ernie Tregellas on October 23, 1921 in Alva, Oklahoma. They moved to Gray, Oklahoma in 1927, where they farmed for over 40 years, before moving to Perryton in 1967.
She worked at Malone’s in Perryton and cooked at Bryan’s Corner for many years, as well as working on the farm. She was a member of Full Gospel Church, the Senior Citizen Center, Young at Heart and the Sorosis Club. She moved to Twin Oaks Manor in 1999.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1969; one son, Bill Tregellas; and her parents, Emil and Lena Peterman.
She is survived by one son, Jack Tregellas of Perryton; two daughters, Neva Belle Lewis of Mesa, Arizona and Patsy Cordes of Beaver; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to Ochiltree General Hospital Hospice Volunteers, 3101 Garrett Dr., Perryton, Texas 79070; Twin Oaks Manor, 112 Pioneer, Booker, Texas 79005; or to one’s favorite charity.
Cantwell
Jerry D. Cantwell, 69, Turpin, died Thursday, November 13, at the Beaver County Memorial Hospital.
He was born September 29, 1934, in Stroud, Oklahoma to W.E. and Stella Lewallen Cantwell.
He married Joann Halliburton on September 11, 1956. She preceded him in death August 1989. He then married Roberta Headrick on March 2, 1991, they made their home in Turpin.
He retired from Enron, and enjoyed spending time watching and supporting athletic events of the Turpin Cardinals. He also enjoyed his home in Canton, where he spent time fishing, boating, and feeding birds and squirrels. Jerry always liked to spend time with family and friends.
Jerry was a member of the First Baptist Church in Turpin.
In addition to his wife Roberta; he is survived by sons, Billy Cantwell and wife Karen, Gillette, Wyoming; Steve Headrick and wife Tommy, Turpin; Duane Headrick and wife Betty Lou, Turpin; Milton Headrick and wife Jane, Turpin; Marvin Headrick and wife Jetta, Turpin; daughters, Donna Hearon and husband David, Booker, Texas; Ellie Marteney, Liberal, Kansas; his mother, Stella I. Cantwell, Chico, California; brother, Gary Cantwell and wife Cynthia, Chico, California; twenty grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Barbara Harnish.
Funeral services were November 16, at the Turpin High Gymnasium with Rev. Jimmy Reed and Rev. Wyatt Carpenter officiating. Interment followed in the Hooker Cemetery.
The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Turpin Athletic Group or to the Cancer Center of Liberal in care of the mortuary.
Jett
Funeral services for Billie Jett, 75 year old Logan resident, were Monday, November 3, at the Midway Country Church.
The Reverend M.D. "Doc" Methvin, the Reverend Neil Ragan, and the Reverend Jack Cornell officiated. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery, near Clearlake.
Billie Lou Jett was born August 24, 1928 at Alva, to William and Coral Gardner. She was raised near Clearlake, where she attended a country school. Billie then attended Beaver School, later transferring to Laverne, graduating in 1945.
Billie attended Northwestern State College in Alva, later Panhandle State University where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree. On October 14, 1951, she married Winton Wayne Jett, and they made their home north of Logan. They were engaged in farming and ranching their entire lives and were named the Beaver County Farm Bureau, "Farm Family of the Year," in 1992. Billie taught school at the Clearlake Country School, then at Follett, retiring in 1990. In 1982, Billie was named as the Lipscomb Limelight "Teacher of the Year."
She was a member of the Midway Country Church, where she taught Sunday School for numerous years. Billie enjoyed reading, taking walks, and was one who always had a smile. She loved her family, and would show them her true joy came from the Lord. Billie would always build them up by saying how she loved them "much, much."
Mrs. Jett died November 1, 2003 at Ochiltree General Hospital in Perryton, at the age of 75 years, two months and seven days.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother.
Billie is survived by her husband, Winton, of the home; two sons, Dr. Stan Jett, and his wife, Amy, of Eastaboga, Alabama, and Dr. W.D. Jett, of Seminole; a daughter and her husband, Cathy and Steve Arnall, of Follett, Texas; 14 grandchildren, Katie, Matt, Dan, Ben, Elizabeth, Jacob, Lydia, Isaac, Rachael, and Cullen Jett, Stephanie and Coby Cook, and Lindsey and Ashley Arnall; a great-grandson, Logan Cook; two sisters, Virginia Jett, of Clearlake, and Beth Dillon and her husband Merlin, of Monte Vista, Colorado; two sisters-in-law, Gloria Gardner, of Goodwell, and Donna Jett, of Springfield, Colorado and numerous other relatives and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Perryton, or to The Filling Station Youth Center in Follett.
Pierson
Orval Keith Pierson was born January 30, 1911 in a dugout west of the old Garrett School in Beaver County, Oklahoma, the eldest son of William and Cora (Baggerly) Pierson.
Orval began his working career at an early age. When his dad became ill, he was forced to quit school and take over as head of household. Orval met the love of his life, Thelma Judd and they were married on December 24, 1934 in Liberal, Kansas. He obtained his master plumbing license and electrician license. He and Thelma later opened Pierson Plumbing and Appliance store in Beaver. Orval installed the first central heating and cooling system in Beaver. He retired at the age of 75 years.
He was a long-standing member in the First Christian Church in Beaver.
He enjoyed hunting coyotes, raising greyhounds and later in life, racing greyhounds.
His story telling about his life in Beaver County was enjoyed by all who knew him.
Orval died on November 5, 2003 at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by both parents; a sister, Grace Sell; a brother, Jack Pierson; a son, Elmer Pierson and a daughter, Beverly Fisher.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Thelma; a daughter, Joy Soares of Orland, California; a daughter-in-law, Ava Pierson of Beaver; a son-in-law, Gene Fisher of Guymon; 9 grandchildren, and a total of 57 great and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Orval Pierson were held Saturday, November 8, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. from the Beaver First Christian Church with Glen Kirkendall officiating. Interment was in the Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Clark Funeral Service.
Ward
Blanche D. Ward, 90, Liberal, Kansas, died Sunday, November 9, at the Wheatridge Park Care Center in Liberal.
She was born December 20, 1912, at Dover, Oklahoma, the daughter of William R. and Eva M. Davis Ward.
Blanche graduated from the Beaver High School in 1931 and was Valedictorian of her class. She taught ten years in Beaver County rural schools. Through the summer school over a period of years, she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, then taught at Laverne and Beaver schools for six years. In 1949, she moved to Liberal where she taught third grade for thirty-four years, teaching a total of fifty years in Oklahoma and Kansas. In 1968, she received a Master of Education degree plus thirty hours at Northwestern College of Oklahoma in Alva.
She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, serving in various executive capacities for the chapter as finance committee, treasurer, and a member of the yearbook committee. She was also a member of the KNEA, NEA. In 1993, she was received into The Teacher’s Hall of Fame, Dodge City, Kansas, where she was "praised for her devotion to her students and her involvement in their community. She, having put in long hours as she contributed to the education of young people in Kansas, and has certainly made this state a better place." She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association.
She was an active member of the Church of Christ, and the Baker Arts.
She is survived by one sister, Eva Moser, Laverne, and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Funeral services were Wednesday at the Church of Christ in Liberal, with Minister Greg Beal, presiding. Interment followed in the Pioneer Cemetery.
Kiker
Zoa Neta Quinn Kiker died on October 25, 2003. Zoa, the fourth child of William Thomas Quinn and Ada Weir Quinn, was born in Beaver. She was baptized into our Lord as a young girl in the Beaver River and her dedication to her faith continued throughout her life.
Zoa was educated in the Beaver schools and received her teaching credentials after attending Panhandle A.M. in Goodwell. She began teaching first grade in Beaver and one of her first students was her brother, Max, who was born twelve years after Zoa.
While teaching in Beaver, she met Hubert "Bud" Kiker and they were married October 11, 1934 in her parent’s home. Bud’s construction company was involved in the building of bridges and overpasses in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas, therefore Bud and Zoa lived in many different towns.
Wherever they lived Zoa was active in her church as a Bible School teacher and member of the choir. She worked as a volunteer in the many schools her daughters attended.
Three children were born to this union, William Davis, who died at birth, Christina Ann and Kathryn Sue.
Bud and Zoa enjoyed their retirement years playing golf, bridge games with friends, fishing trips to Colorado and participating in family gatherings.
Zoa worshipped with family and friends at Westover Hills Church of Christ.
Preceding Zoa in death were her parents, her sister, three brothers and her special son-in-law Gib Gholston.
Survivors are her daughters Ann Kiker Katzer and son-in-law Charlie Katzer and Kathy Kiker Gholston, four granddaughters Tara Downer, Lori Young, Susan Page, Monica Katzer; two grandsons Kyle Gholston and Mike Katzer; eleven great-grandchildren, Corinne, Channing, Chelsea, and Candace Young, Ryan and Elise Downer, Tiffanny, Amy, and Eric Gholston, and Riley and Gabby Page.

Strong
Carvin J. "Bud" Strong died October 13, 2003. He was born May 26, 1930 to Loren and Thelma Strong, six miles south of Beaver.
Bud graduated from Beaver High School in 1949. He was in band and played football, baseball, and basketball. He also had lead parts in school plays.
Bud served in the army from 1951 to 1953 at Ft. Hood, Texas and in Okinawa.
In his early years he worked several jobs. He helped his father as an auto mechanic, was a cook in his grandfather’s cafe in Limon, Colorado, and helped his aunt in the Offield Rest Home.
In Englewood, Colorado he worked in a service station, worked on race cars and ran in Demolition Derby’s with his own cars. He bought the station in Englewood, and a home, and lived there four years.
In 1961, he moved back to Beaver, worked on a work-over rig and at Travis Boston’s service station in Elmwood. He was also a mechanic at Pete Kile’s John Deere. In 1963 he started plumbing for Gross Plumbing and in 1965 started his own plumbing business.
Bud liked hunting and fishing with his buddies, Travis Boston and Jr. Holleman. Carolyn relates that he would take her fishing, bait the hook, help reel the fish in, take the fish off the hook and dress it. So she felt he was a wonderful brother.
Bud is survived by a sister Carolyn Pope; two daughters, Carolyn Faye Strong and Terry Mae Keeth; one son, Eugene Gilbert Warner; five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two nephews and two nieces.
Memorial services were Saturday, October 18, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in the Beaver First Christian Church with Bob Blazek officiating and Ron Pope assisting. Interment was in the Pioneer Cemetery with Beaver American Legion Post 149 doing military graveside services. The family suggests memorials to American Heart Association.
Mosburg
Roberta Rose Marie "Bobbie" Mosburg, 60, of Marlow, Oklahoma died Thursday, October 16 at the Duncan Regional Hospital in Duncan, Oklahoma.
She was born September 18, 1943 at Guymon. Bobbie was a homemaker, she loved to help other people and she loved to baby sit.
She was a member of the Church of Christ in Duncan. On April 16, 1960, she married Jim Mosburg at Guymon, he survives. She had lived in Liberal, Kansas, Tyrone and Guymon prior to moving to Marlow.
In addition to her husband, Jim Mosburg, she is survived by one son, Richard Mosburg and wife Lanna, Cullman, Alabama; her mother, Elsie Mae Arnold, Meade, Kansas; two brothers, Milton D. Forbes, Oklahoma City; R.A. Forbes, Plains, Kansas; four sisters, Carly Hancock, Oklahoma City; Verna McPhail, Ashland, Kansas; Loni Rhea, Darlington, South Carolina; Boni Rhea, Guymon; eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, and a daughter Jacqueline Williams in 1995.
Graveside services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 18 at the Marlow Cemetery in Marlow Oklahoma.
Holleman
Elmina Mae Holleman was born on July 23, 1917 in Pryor, Oklahoma to Jim and Jessie (Strong) Carter. Her former childhood and school days were spent in Beaver. Elmina married Ernest Starr in 1934 and they resided in Beaver until 1943. Ernest joined the Navy CB’s and Elmina and their three children, Sanford, Patricia and Dean moved to Wichita, Kansas. Elmina worked as a riveter on the B29’s for two years and then they all returned to Beaver. Ernest and Orin Hendricks were killed in an airplane accident on July 31, 1952.
Elmina and S.J. "Junior" Holleman were married on June 14, 1953 in New Mexico. They had one son LeRoy. Elmina enjoyed painting, crocheting, embroidering, and cooking. Another favorite pastime was fishing with Junior. They celebrated fifty years of marriage in June of 2003.
Elmina died on October 6, 2003 in Beaver.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Jessie Carter, three brothers, Marvin, Leo and Jimmy Carter.
Elmina is survived by her husband, Steril Junior Holleman of Beaver; three sons, Sanford Starr of Perryton, Texas, Dean Starr of Beaver, LeRoy Holleman of Noblesville, Indiana; one daughter, Patricia Knowles of Clarendon, Texas; one sister, Deloris Nichols of Beaver; fourteen grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren, two great- great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Alice Ruth Longshore, 90, longtime Goodwell resident died Sunday morning, October 5, 2003 at the St. Ann’s Nursing Home in Panhandle, Texas.
The daughter of Swan and Ruth Anna Otilia (Anderson) Johnson she was born on January 2, 1913 at Spirit Lake, Iowa.
Alice and William T. Longshore were united in marriage on February 28, 1935 in Bethany, Missouri. He preceded her in death on May 14, 2002.
The Longshore family moved to Goodwell from Canistota, South Dakota in 1960. Mrs. Longshore was a homemaker and helped with the custom harvesting business until retirement in 1981.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William T. Longshore, one son, Paul D. "Pete" Longshore, son-in-law, Jon A. Altom, one sister-in-law, Dora Stalcup and three brother-in-laws, Carl Ames, Eddie Thompson, and J.O. Gibbs.
Survivors include one son, W.P. Longshore and his wife, Hilda of Balko, two daughters, Karen and her husband, Don Case of Groom, Texas and Carol Altom of Goodwell; ten grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, one sister, Ruby Thompson of Branson, Missouri, one sister-in-law, Susan Gibbs of Strawberry Point, Iowa and one brother-in-law, Bryan Stalcup of Afton, Iowa.

Three children were born to this union, Ina Carlene, Julia Fay and Charles Henry. She attended the First Church of God in Beaver for many years, singing in the choir and in various music groups. During the past thirty years she had attended the First Baptist Church in Virginia and the Church of God in Moore, Oklahoma.
Sarah spent a number of years as a Stanley Home Products dealer, a Shaklee Distributor and as a checker at the Beaver Ideal Food Store. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing entire wedding party attire and high school formals.
Her husband, Charles, preceded her in death thirty-one years ago, from an automobile accident. Her parents, all five siblings, and a great-grandchild, Chad Nichols, also preceded her in death. She leaves behind her children, Carlene and Don Hill, Lakes of the Woods, Virginia, Julia Fay and Rick Sumrall, Balko, and Charles "Chuck" Pascoe of Canon City, Colorado. She also leaves seventeen grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, one great great grandchild, Isaiah Ky Williams, and a host of "adopted" and extended family. She was especially blessed to be the honoree at the July 2002 Mitchell Cousins reunion.
Sarah spent her final years enjoying reading, watching spiritual and gospel music television, and visiting with family and friends that would drop by. She especially enjoyed, and looked forward to the visits from those delivering her meals from the Nutrition Center in Beaver and Robin Hall Wagoner, her caretaker. She was able to take her daily walks until the Saturday before her death, often accompanied by her little friend, five-year-old Dolcey, who was her little Guardian Angel.
Those who knew her will truly miss Sarah, Mother, Grandma and Aunt Speck. She always had words of encouragement and was one of the greatest prayer warriors most of us have ever known. She has earned and greatly deserves her graduation to her Heavenly Home. We all loved her so much.

Radcliff
Josie V. Radcliff died September 21 in Beaver County Memorial Hospital in Beaver. She was 85 years old. She was born November 4, 1917 in Bellview Community in Beaver County. She was a resident of Beaver County all of her life. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Forgan.
She was married to Carl Radcliff January 13, 1934 in Guymon. He preceded her in death in March 1992.
Survivors include one sister Mary Swallow of Forgan, daughter Carlene "Butch" Bullard of Forgan, granddaughter Debbie and her husband Leon Cash of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, granddaughter Tammy and her husband Mike Griffin of Newkirk, Oklahoma and granddaughter Cindy and her husband Craig Huebner of Turpin, ten great grandchildren, one great, great grandchild and nieces and nephews and many dear friends and family.

Messner
Ethlyn Marie Messner, 83, of Follett, Texas died on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at Twin Oaks Manor in Booker, Texas.
She was formerly a resident of Slapout.
Graveside services will be held at Fairmont Cemetery, north of Follett on Thursday, September 25, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Fairmont Cemetery.

Sprague
Jackson Ben Sprague was born December 6, 1939 in Beaver County to Benjamin and Alta (Hewatt) Sprague. He attended the Hibb’s Country School, later attending high school at Beaver, graduating in 1957. On May 29, 1957, he married Noma Cline at Buffalo, and they lived in Spearman, Texas for a time while he worked for Consumer Co-op, later the Ideal Food Store. In 1958, they moved to the family farm where he was raised and he worked in the oil field. Jack and Noma then lived in various places before settling in Shattuck. He was employed by the American Milk Producers Incorporated, until 1964, when he purchased the Champion Service Station. In 1976, Jack sold the station to his brother Dale and began Sprague Oil Company.
He was a member of the Shattuck Booster Club, Shattuck Chamber of Commerce, and the Odd Fellows Lodge. Jack enjoyed working, and was liked by everyone who knew him. He loved to collect and restore old tractors and gas pumps.
Mr. Sprague died September 14, 2003 at his home in Shattuck at the age of 63 years, nine months, and eight days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Kerrold Leo.
Jack is survived by his life-time companion and mother of his children; Noma of Shattuck; two sons and their wives, Clinton Leo and Kendra Sprague of Yukon, and Ben and Deana Sprague of Shattuck; a daughter Rita d’Ombrain of Oklahoma City; five granddaughters, Bobbie, Nikita, Brittney, Morgan, and Heather; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Samantha; a brother and his wife, Dale and Linda Sprague of Shattuck; a sister and her husband, Alta Mae and Robert Getz of Beaver; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Thursday, September 18, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in Shattuck with Reverend Kenny Platte officiating. Interment was in the Shattuck Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Johnson’s Good Samaritan Funeral Service of Shattuck.
Lansden
John K.S. Lansden, 62, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, died Sunday night, August 31, 2003, in a fire at his home.
He was born March 27, 1941 in Nashville, Tennessee.
He is survived by two sons, one daughter, and one granddaughter.
John was in Beaver during April of 2002 for the Cow Chip Throwing Contest and visited with several cousins during his time here.
Funeral services and burial were at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Nashville, Tennessee on Friday, September 5.
McAlister
Ward McAlister, 91, died August 26, 2003 at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
He was born April 6, 1912, at Baker, the son of Ben and Louisa (Narron) McAlister. He graduated from Eureka High School in Baker in 1933.
On December 26, 1936, he married Esther Hightower at Beaver. She died March 21, 2000.
He had worked as custodian and bus driver for the Eureka school for five years. In 1938, he moved near Turpin where he farmed and ranched with his father-in-law for forty years. He retired in 1975 and moved to Liberal, Kansas. He was a distributor for Walker lawn mowers.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Liberal, and a former member of the Turpin United Methodist Church.
He was also a mason for over 50 years, having joined the McFarland Masonic Lodge at Turpin in 1950. His current membership was with the Hooker Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Kan-Okie Ramblers Band and the Hooker Gospel Singers. He was active with the Liberal Senior Citizens Center.
His survivors include: two daughters; Dolores and husband Paul Davis of Turpin; Donna Jean and husband Mike Bosley of Dodge City, Kansas; a foster son Frank and wife June Gibson of Apple Valley, California; six grandchildren; 6 foster grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Karen Ann McAlister; one brother and two sisters.
Funeral services were Saturday at the Turpin Baptist Church with Pastor Jimmy Reed and Rev. Stan Lehnert presiding. Burial was in the Liberal Cemetery.
Osterhout
Hazel Osterhout died on August 25, 2003, at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.
Hazel was born in 1918, in Beaver county, the only daughter and eldest of five siblings parented by Wiley and Alice Hendricks. Of those family members, she is survived by her only living brother, Herbert Hendricks of Beaver. Her parents, and brothers, Oren, Lee and Roy predeceased her.
Hazel was married to Donald Edgar Osterhout of Winfield, Kansas who predeceased her. She is mother to Michael Osterhout of Kansas City, Donna Carlberg of El Dorado, and Larry Osterhout of Wichita. She is grandmother to 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Hazel graduated from Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas, in 1940 with a bachelor’s degree in education. Throughout her life she gave service to her community as a teacher, clerical worker, customer service assistant, homemaker and parent. She attended University United Methodist Church since 1954.
Services were held on Friday, August 29, 2003 at University United Methodist Church in Wichita and Saturday, August 30, at the First United Methodist Church in Beaver.
Acton
Joan Marie Acton, age 47, died August 21, 2003 in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Joan was born October 31, 1955 in Beaver. She was the daughter of Ruth Acton of Mountain Home and the late Dudley Acton.
Joan attended Mountain Home public schools and graduated from the University of Arkansas with her Masters Degree in Music Education from Colorado State University. Joan served as a band director in the Mountain Home, Norfork and Newark Public Schools, and more recently in Windsor, Colorado. She was a talented vocalist, guitarist and brass instrumentalist and performed with the Fort Collins Wind Symphony.
Joan is survived by her mother Ruth of Mountain Home; sister, Janet Linston and husband David of Bradenton, Florida; sister, Dixie Ledbetter and husband Al of Oklahoma City; and nephews Ted and Grant Ledbetter of Oklahoma City.
Bedell
Earl Charles Bedell, 72, a lifetime resident of the Slapout community, died August 24, 2003 at the Integris Bass Pavilion Hospital in Enid.
Services will be held August 28, 2003 at the Follett High School Auditorium in Follett, Texas. Burial was in the Fairmont Cemetery north of Follett under the direction of Myatt-Seeger Funeral Home of Laverne.

Martin
Arthur Ray Martin, 95, died August 10, 2003 at Westville, Oklahoma.
He was born December 30, 1907, near Rogers, Arkansas the son of Arthur Lee Martin and Lula (Wallace) Martin.
He grew up on a farm approximately eight miles east of Rogers, Arkansas where the family was in a general farm operation.
At a young age he began traveling to the panhandle of Oklahoma and southwest Kansas, where he worked in wheat, broomcorn, and milo harvest. In 1929, Ray joined his uncle in wheat farming, then in 1932, he started his own farm.
On July 17, 1933, he married his wife Martha and moved to Beaver County. In 1939, they purchased a farm in Knowles where they raised wheat, milo and cattle. In October of 1969, they moved to Stilwell, Oklahoma, then to Westville in 1974, where he resided until moving to the Westville Nursing Home in October of 2000.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Martha, two brothers, and one grandson.
Survivors are one daughter Pauline Clanton and son-in-law Bob Clanton of Wentworth, Missouri; son James Martin and daughter-in-law Edith Martin of Stilwell; son Leroy Martin and daughter-in-law Cindy Martin of La Crosse, Kansas; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, five great, great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Services were Thursday, August 14, 2003 in the Stilwell City Cemetery.
Rorabaugh
Doyle Edgar Rorabaugh, 81, died Thursday, August 14, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas.
He was born November 17, 1921, in Gray, the son of Lewis E. and Lola (Bull) Rorabaugh.
On December 2, 1945, he married Josephine Rademaker at Emden, Illinois.
He farmed and ranched in the Balko community for 50 years before moving to Liberal in 1995.
He graduated from Perryton High School in 1939 and attended John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.
Mr. Rorabaugh was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Perryton, Texas and Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church of Liberal. He was a past president of the Balko PTA, Balko School Board and Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was a charter member of the Oklahoma Charolais Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son Doyle Lynn. Survivors include his wife, Josephine; two sons, Teryl Rorabaugh and wife Donna of Liberal, Kansas; Rex Rorabaugh and wife Opal Lea of Oklahoma City; two daughters Rita Knop and husband Kent of Guymon; Rene’ Wester and husband Richard of Liberal, Kansas; one sister Maxine Beck of Perryton, Texas, ten grandchildren, Teri Harp, Brett Rorabaugh, Chad Knop, Kurt Knop, Kara Knop, Kristin Rorabaugh, David Rorabaugh, Zachary Wester, Luke Wester, and Jacob Wester and two great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Andrew Wheling presiding. Burial was at the Ochiltree County Cemetery in Perryton, Texas.
