DURING THIS WEEK in 1949, Steve Graham, Weatherford High School football coach, and Jack Beeson, junior high grid boss, were honored in an assembly and each were presented with two shirts, two ties, and two pairs of socks; and the Gyp Hill 4-H Club held its first meeting with 13 members present and elected Marilyn Kaiser president.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1957, Mrs. Floyd Whisenhunt was awarded the national Kappa Kappa Iota teacher’s sorority scholarship to further her graduate study; and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Kappel purchased the H & M restaurant from Mr. and Mrs. Mike Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Bill King.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Cara Michelle Leonard and Judson Sloan Regier announced their Septamber 19 exchange of wedding vows; the Rader Insurance Agency was sold to Magill Insurance Agency of Weatherford; and Donna Dirickson, assistant district attorney, was among 24 individuals and 5 groups to be honored by the Oklahoma Bar Association at its 94th Annual Meeting.

DURING THIS WEEK in 1946, L.L. Dunn was named community chairman for the Custer County Agricultural Conservation Association; and the junior class presented the play "High Pressure Homer."

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1954, Ed Berrong, W.L. Haynes, Edgar Lawter, James Craddock, Jake Wright, Manley Cook, L.R. Dawson, and Arthur Shotts were named to U.S. Highway 66 Road Improvement Committee; the Weatherford Eagles wrapped up their football season by dropping a 40-20 decision to the Kingfisher Yellowjackets; and Eaton’s IGA featured tom turkeys for 43 cents a pound.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Sherry Crall, Beth Watkins, Ace Tipton, Vicki Hutto, Michael Brown, Kristi Hill, and Teresa Wardell celebrated birthdays; the Weatherford Arts Council presented A Night of the American Experience, a dinner theatre, in the SWOSU Student Union Ballroom; and local Boy Scouts met at the Federated Church to hand out bags around Weatherford to collect food.

DURING THIS WEEK in 1964, following a series of protests, Street Commissioner George F. Wilkinson announced that the proposal to widen four Weatherford streets had been dropped; and Anthony’s sold new spring cottons for 44 cents a yard.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1973, Wyndell Clark transferred here from Duncan as a Public Service Co. district operator; Weatherford schools were closed by ARKLA Gas when snowfall caused a gas shortage; and John Fowler, new Chamber of Commerce manager, was guest speaker at Mothers’ Study Club.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, SWOSU took over management of the Ghost Mound Youth Center on Highway 58 in Hydro, OK; Dr. Joe Anna Hibler, Judge Jacqueline Duncan and Martha Sauer were honored at the American Association of University Women’s annual spring luncheon with a WOW Award Celebrating Weatherford’s Outstanding Women.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1950, Stony Lockstone left for Philadelphia to attend Echels College of Mortuary Science; and Harry L. Wright filed his candidacy for city water commissioner.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1980, Wayne Winn announced he would run for the Senate seat from which Ed Berrong was retiring; pupils from Judy Sisson’s second-grade class presented a short play, "Anyone Could, But no One Would," at East Elementary School; American Savings & Loan opened its new location on North Washington; and Mark Hoffman, WHS’ most valuable player for the 1979 season, sighed a letter of intent with SWSU.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, State senators voted 26-22 for a bill permitting parents to send their children to the schools of their choice; children at Kiddie Korral got a visit from Rugrat "Chuckie" who sang songs, talked about stranger danger, wearing seat belts when riding in a vehicle and always minding parents and teachers.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1958, Katherine Lou Foreman, WHS senior, received the annual PEO award; Grace Burcham was appointed head of the "National Library Week’ observance in Custer County; and the Tech Theater showed "Old Yeller" in technicolor.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1971 East and West Elementary Schools shared a shipment of 1,000 new library books; and memberships of Weatherford Golf Course reached 110, said Rex Gates, president.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Eakly High School senior Misty Williams became the first from her school to ever be named an academic all-state class; wheat prices were in $2.30 a bushel range; and Chelsea Hildreth won the Miss Pigtails contest.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1969, Joe Anna Hibler was awarded The Lois & Marguerite Morse Scholarship by Delta Kappa Gamma; John B. Robinson was employed as vocal music director at the high school and junior high; and Sgt. Gary Rader returned from active duty in Vietnam.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1978, Winston Gates was elected director of Deer Creek Conservation District; a six-week singles seminar was held at First Baptist Church; and "Saturday Night Fever," starring John Travolta and Karen Sue Gorney, was featured at the Vesta Theater.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Texas A&M-Commerce senior Molly Clark represented the Pi of Texas Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at the Student Forum in conjunction with the inauguration of TAMC President, Keith McFarland; and WHS was No. 1 in preseason baseball rankings.

DURING THIS WEEK in 1967, WHS debaters Ken DeFehr and Gary Witcher qualified for the state Forensic Tournament; and under the supervision of Avis Leach, WHS Future Homemakers of America members honored their fathers at a Daddy-Date pot-luck.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1975, Southwest Playhouse presented Camelot; Dr. Allen Badgett gave a program on gardening to Probieren Club; and Anthony’s sold men’s leisure suits (with contrasting stitching to highlight) for $35.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, LaVonna Spencer, Abby Harris, Sarah Dysart, Nicole Page, Teri Williams and Randi Sue Leonard placed at the State Gymnastics Meet in Tulsa; and Morgan Brown was named WHS girls basketball player of the week.

DURING THIS WEEK in 1964, Gary Hamburger and Dale Rowland were chosen as Rotarian students of the month; Larry Williams had both the grand champion and reserve champion lambs at the annual Weatherford Junior Livestock Show; and Weatherford’s Lost Corner Square Dance Club hosted the southwest district spring festival with Terry McCarty calling.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1973, Lester Bond was appointed to the Agrico board; Brenda (Smith) Lumpkin became a collegiate pledge of Gamma Phi Beta while her aunt, Mrs. Frank Birdwell, grandmother, Mrs. Jack Hargues, and mother, Mrs. Ed. Hatchell, became special initiates; and Cedrick Crink and Claude Kezer teamed up in the college auditorium in "Music by Kezer - Reading by Crink," billed as a ‘happening.’

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, 12th Annual World Championship Hog Calling Contest proceeds went to Oneighty Teen Center; members of the principal’s chair reading club at Burcham Elementary were Zack Cole, Trevor Scarberry, Daniel Kelly, Danielle Williams, Michael Taylor, Macy Butler, Josh Lucas, Carrie Lawrence and Dylan Cash.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1973, the Custer County Young Republicans and Teenage Republicans left for Washington DC, where they studied the GOP campaign organizations and talked with legislators; and Dr. George Kendall began his association with Dr. Dale Schomp at Weatherford Animal Hospital.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, local attorney and historian John Donley talked to visitors of the Blair Cabin about life as a pioneer in Weatherford; Tammy Shaffer received the Associate of the Quarter Award at the Weatherford Stage Store; and Mark Tannehill celebrated his 14th birthday.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1980, Anne Williams and Randy Haney participated in the Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain State Park; and work was progressing on the additions to the new Weatherford High School Complex on Washington Street.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Randy Switzer celebrated his 40th birthday; pianist Manuel Antonio Carrillo presented a special recital at SWOSU; and SWOSU Rodeo Team members prepared for the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo. under the directorship of Dr. Don Mitchell.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1978, the board of directors of the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce voted to replace two outdoor billboards; Walt Disney’s "The Jungle Book" was showing at The Vesta; and Bob Densmore, standout Bulldog offensive lineman for the year 1968-1971, was hired as assistant coach and instructor at SWOSU.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Amber Brewster celebrated her 19th birthday; David Clark was inducted into the Southwestern Lanes Hall of Fame; and Deena Bushong won the Central Oklahoma Sonic Enrichment Scholarship.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1975, the total enrollment for the first day of classes at Weatherford Public Schools was 1,225; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bergner celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at their home; and "Jaws" was showing at The Vesta.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Weatherford Public School employees finished up work on a new school bus zone at East Elementary; 55 players reported to Thomas High School’s football practices; and high school principal Drew Eichelberger transferred to West Elementary.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1973, Weatherford students were once again filling the school halls, enrolling for another year; and Airman Lamont Woody Lackland /air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, graduated in electronic communications.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, a committee was formed to consider the mayor’s compensation; Phase 1 of the Davis Road project was slated to be completed by mid-September; and local chamber volunteers rounded up members for Weatherford’s Christmas promotion, "A Millennium Christmas."

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1980, Eddie Laxon, a former Weatherford resident, became mayor of Temple; and the alumni of the Weatherford High School classes of 1936-41 were busy planning an open house and banquet.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Mel and Be Fiegel celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary; 87 football players reported to three-a-days at SWOSU; and Catherine Marie Hogan and Jeffrey Todd DeVaughan’s wedding announcement ran in the WDN.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1950, Deer Creek, 12 miles east of Weatherford, went out of its banks and blocked Highway 66; a 16-year-old passenger bus was added to the Weatherford Public School fleet; and A.J. Schwartz joined the staff of Deer Creek Soil Conservation District headquartered in Weatherford.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1980, Weatherford attorney Alan Markum was sworn in as associate judge by Charles M. Wilson, Custer County district judge; "Mountain Men" was playing at Forty-West Drive-In; and Dr. Jack Harder announced the opening of his medical clinic at 402 North Washington.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Rick Koch and Ray Harris celebrated birthdays; Clay Hamburger and Jimmy Gather were first in the Southwestern Lanes sweeper; and the SWOSU President’s picnic was set for Aug. 23.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1967, city employees placed stop signs on all streets intersecting Huber from Kansas to Custer streets; and Hydro voters approved a one-cent sales tax.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1975, the temperature dipped to 26 degrees and Weatherford experienced its first autumn freeze; TG&Y was selling the latest hit album of artists John Denver, Olivia Newton-John, Linda Ronstadt, Paul Simon and Bruce Springsteen; and David Reed and Myra Deisher were married in Casper, Wyo.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, local retailers planned an $8,000 holiday giveaway; the Eagles finished district runner-up, winning over Guymon; and the SWOSU forensics team presented a readers theatre.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1964, The Pharmacy Wives took first place with their float of Dumbo in the homecoming parade; and Lydon B. Johnson won the presidential election over Barry Goldwater by a landslide ¾ but not with any help from Weatherford voters who favored Goldwater in all but one precinct.

DURING THIS WEEK IN 1973, Custer County Deputy Sheriff Paul Gaines was named Officer of the Year by the Western Sooner Crime Seminar; Bruce Reed, Weatherford High School senior linebacker, received the Headhunter award; and WHS senior class president Dan Villines presented Eagle coaches with Eagle car tags.

DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, volunteers made plans for Weatherford’s Millennium celebration; and Stars of the Month at WMS were Skye Simon, Tad Bennett, Rita Rabbani, Michael Pounds, Jessica Floyd and Booker Blakley.
