Genevieve Greer also studied drama at Rollins College, where she successfully performed in a number of theater productions. She appeared regularly in 1936-37 on the National Broadcasting Company's Magic Hour of Speech and was selected for the American Hall of Fame by Major Edward S. Bowes. After studying at Rollins College, Genevieve Greer Kagen traveled to New York City to acquire a more extensive classical music education. She studied voice under Marcella Sembrich, a renowned voice teacher at the Juilliard School of Music. It was there that she met and fell in love with her future husband, Sergius Kagen, who was the accompanist and coach for Marcella Sembrich's students and later became a famous voice teacher, composer and pianist. After their marriage in 1937, the couple continued their artistic pursuits. Mrs. Kagen became the director of the Little Theater group for the New York City central branch of the Young Women's Christian Association. Sergius Kagen performed at Carnegie Hall and Town Hall in numerous concerts for the well-known Metropolitan Opera Singers whom he coached and taught at Juilliard. He later published two books on studying singing, which his wife encouraged him to write and helped to edit. Likewise, he encouraged her to write and paint. She successfully completed her novel, "The Aristocrat," in 1946, which was published by Vanguard Press. She also enjoyed taking lessons at the Art Student's League in New York and painting many water colors and oils. They raised two daughters in whom they imparted their love for learning, music and the arts. After her husband's untimely death in 1964, Genevieve Greer Kagen meticulously devoted herself to editing the second edition of his well-known book, "Music for the Voice." She successfully contracted Indiana University press to publish the newer edition. A pioneer in spirit, very independent and resourceful, Genevieve Greer Kagen decided to leave behind her former life in New York and return to her land in Oklahoma that she loved and cherished. She was 64 years old at the time. She had a trailer put down on her land outside of town because she always enjoyed the peace and quiet of nature from which she gained strength and energy. On her own, she set up a successful cattle business, which she ran single-handedly until illness and disease forced her to give it up and move to town when she was in her eighties. Her last three years were spent at Burford Manor. Genevieve will be remembered for her zest and versatility, her great love for nature, for gardens, flowers, dogs, birds; her passion for learning and the arts; her generous spirit, her inquisitive mind, her wit, her grace and charm; and her deep devotion to and love for her husband and children.
