In The Memory of Michael
Did you hear the trumpets blow, and Heaven's Angels sing
The evening of March 20th, the first day of Spring
Did you hear his mortal sigh as God cast off his weight
And did you see him rise and walk through Heaven's golden gate?
Were you there to hold his hand as he began to wane?
Were you witness to his spirit 'escaping the pain'?
It was a life cut short indeed, but we are not to weep
Our Father had a need for him, and bid him go to sleep
It's fitting that he left us on the first day of the spring
The Lord has lots of work to do to color everything
He needs a lot of painters to make the colors glow
and color all the petals of the flowers as they grow
Someone has to paint the leaves that hang upon the trees
and all our brightly colored friends that glide upon the breeze
and what about the sunrise that explodes in mornings' east
Or all God's lowly creatures, from the grandest to the least?
Will you look a little closer at the painted western skies,
and the details on the feathers of the eagle as she flies?
Will you scrutinize the beauty of the deep blue mountain lakes,
Or the jades of ocean waters, or the greens of cedar brakes?
Springtime will be special this year, bittersweet though, I'll admit
Just knowing my friend Michael has had a hand in it
So, do not mourn his passing, that's not the thing to do
Yet, rejoice his new beginning, for I know he'd want us to.
