HAZEL V. MAKER
Hazel Virginia “Turbie” Maker, 78, died June 4, 1998 in the Hillcrest Medical Center, Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Funeral Mass was held June 8, 1998 in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Pawhuska, Oklahoma with Father Leonard Higgins officiating. Interment was in the Pawhuska City Cemetery.
Hazel was born April 10, 1920 in Stilwell, Oklahoma, the daughter of Oscar and Elizabeth “Lizzie” (Red Bird) Wear (sic). She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Klash-Kah-She Club, Alter Society and the American Legion Post 198 Auxiliary. She was a counselor on drugs and alcohol for over twenty-five years and was last employed by the Osage Nation.
In 1989, Hazel was honored by the Oklahoma Association on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Coalition and named to that group’s Hall of Fame. At the time, she was a counselor at the Jane Phillips Chemical Dependency Unit in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and spent twenty-plus years in the field of chemical addiction, developing programs for drug addicts.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, James Anthony “Tony” and Kathleen Maker of Stillwater, Oklahoma; two grandsons, James Anthony Maker of Oklahoma City and Joel Alfred maker of Tahlequah, Oklahoma; four great-grandchildren, Jerod Anthony Maker and Mallary Maker both of Poteau, Oklahoma and James Anthony Maker III of Mustang, Oklahoma and Jace Bailey Maker of Tahlequah; a nephew, John Thomas Vice of Collinsville, Oklahoma and a host of other relatives and friends.

BEN JOHNSON, Jr.
Ben “Son” Johnson, Jr., 77, died unexpectedly April 8, 1996 in Mesa, Arizona. He was born June 13, 1918 in Foraker, Oklahoma, the son of Ben and Ollie (Workman) Johnson, Sr. August 31, 1941, he married Carol Elaine Jones, who preceded him in death on March 27, 1994.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Ollie Ride of Mesa; a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Dale Christenson of Pawhuska, Oklahoma; a niece, Ann Whitehorn of Pawhuska; seven nephews, Dale Christenson, Jr. and Ben Christenson of Pawhuska, Larry Christenson of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Ben Miller of Gilbert, Arizona, John Miller of Cave Creek, Arizona, Dan Jones and Barry Jones, both of California; and numerous great nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Ben was preceded in death by his father, Ben Johnson, Sr., a sister, Mary Ann Miller and step-father, Fred Rider.
Ben had acted in dozens of movies since his first in the early fifties (“Mighty Joe Young”) winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in “The Last Picture Show”.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 11, 1996 in the East Valley Free Will Baptist Church, Mesa. Graveside services were held April 14, 1996 in the Pawhuska Cemetery with Reverend Howard Dwartney officiating. Casket bearers in Pawhuska were Dale Christenson, Jr., Ben Christenson, Larry Christenson, Joe Bob Briggs, J.B. Hurd, Allen Lansdown, Jay Barton and Ben Wells.
A memorial was established with the Children’s Medical Research Hospital in Oklahoma City.

ETHEL P. NEWBERRY
Ethel Prukhiser Newberry, 98, longtime resident and teacher in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, died December 27, 1995 at Houston, Texas where she had made her home for several years.
Mrs. Newberry was born November 15, 1897 in Martin County, Indiana. She taught in a one room school for three years before moving to French Lick, Indiana for two years and then to West Baden Springs School from 1922-1926 then, in 1927, she transferred to Indian Camp School in Pawhuska where she taught until retiring as Principal in 1967. She then moved to Texas where she taught for several years in Spring Branch schools.
Mrs. Newberry was an outstanding educator and received many honors in her profession, including outstanding professional recognition by the Oklahoma Educators in 1958 and in 1963 was named Teacher of the Year for Osage County, Oklahoma. For fifty years, she was an active member of the Delta Kappa Gamma.
Mrs. Newberry was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Pawhuska where she taught Women's Bible Class for many years.
Survivors included: Her daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Leonard Greene of Houston; a foster daughter, Winona Sumter Cole of Houston; two nephews, Darrell Owen and Jack Owen, both of Gary, Indiana; two nieces, Shirley McReynolds of Indianapolis, Indiana and Mary Lou Roberts of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Services were held Tuesday, January 2, 1996, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel in Pawhuska with Reverend James officiating. Interment was in the Pawhuska Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Directors.
At her retirement, Mrs. Newberry was honored by the Osage Tribe, having taught more than one generation of their children. A most appropriate poem, patterned after Longfellow's "Hiawatha", was written by Waltena RedCorn and presented to Mrs. Newberry on her retirement; a very fitting tribute to a caring and most capable teacher.
GENEVA "GENNY" MAKER
Braden and Linda gave their mother, Genny Maker to the Lord Our God, Wednesday evening, December 27, 1995 at her home in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. She touched the lives of all who knew her, leaving behind many friends and loved ones.
Genny was survived by two daughters, Linda Roy Long and her husband, Marvin, of Oklahoma City, and Cherri Julia RidingIn of Dallas, Texas; a son, Braden Roy Maker of Tulsa; four brothers, Leon Lively, Lloyd Lively, Lawrence Lively and Pat Lively; two grandsons, Scott and Less RidingIn and two great grandchildren, Joshua and Joseph.
Among the many friends she left behind were Dr. Leo Vinyard, Alicia, Lillie, Cindy, Nicholas, Tom, Joe and Winnie.
Services were held December 30, 1995 in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Interment was in the Pawhuska Cemetery.

DEE YOUNT
Dee Yount, 64, lifelong resident of the Pawhuska, Oklahoma, area, died October 16, 1994, in the Pawhuska Hospital following an extended illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 19, 1994, in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church with Reverend J.P. Dane and Reverend Larry Wallace officiating. Interment was in the Pawhuska Cemetery.
Dee was born January 22, 1930 in Nelagoney, Oklahoma, where she attended school, gradating with the Class of 1949.
"Aunt Dee", as she was affectionately known, was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was Sunday School Secretary for over thirty years. For a number of years, she was also active in various youth groups of all ages. She was a former member of the Pawhuska Roundup Club and the International Roundup Cavalcade, serving the latter for a number years as secretary.
Dee retired in 1992 from the National Bank of Commerce, six months short of forty years service. After retiring, she became interested in Arts and Crafts.
Surviving are two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Patria Yount and Edward Lee and Rose Yount, all of Pawhuska; three nieces; one nephew and numerous other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Floyd Yount.

ANNA GRACE MOORE
Anna Grace Moore, 76, died April 18, 1994, at her home in Wynona, Oklahoma. Funeral services were held April 20, 1994, at 10:00 a.m., in the First Baptist Church, Wynona, with interment at 2:00 p.m., in the Grenola (Kansas) Cemetery.
Anna was born December 26, 1917, in Chautauqua County, Kansas, the daughter of Charley and Mary Jane (Leonard) Stiles and married John O. Moore, March 8, 1934 in Howard, Kansas.
Anna was a member of the First Baptist Church, Wynona and VFW (Veteran’s of Foreign Wars) Auxiliary.
Surviving were her husband, John O. Moore; one son, John Richard Moore of Wynona; four daughters, Jane Johnson and Patsy Lay of Wynona, Jean Thornton of Pawhuska, Oklahoma and Carol Neely of Joshua, Texas; seventeen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Dale Moore.

CLAUDE ADAM “C.A.” BROMLEY
Claude Adam “C.A.” Bromley, 93, longtime resident of the Pawhuska, Oklahoma, area, died April 15, 1994, following an extended illness.
Funeral services were held April 19, 1994, in the First Christian Church, Pawhuska, with Reverend William Morgan officiating. Interment was in the Pawhuska Cemetery, where American Legion Posts presented Military Rites.
Mr. Bromley was born May 2, 1900, in a sod hut near Turnersville, Texas, the son of
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Bromley. He married Grace Branstetter Fink in Pawhuska on February 2, 1947.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, a thirty-second degree Mason, a member of the American Legion, Lions Club and was a life-time member of the Cowboy Hall of fame in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Although C.A. retired from Bareco Refinery in Barnsdall, Oklahoma, where he worked for thirty-nine years, he was in his heart a cowboy and an artist. While at Bareco, he ran his own herd of cattle and after he retired (from Bareco), he worked on ranches around Pawhuska and for many summers he was Chuck Wagon Cook on the 6666 Ranch in South Texas. Although he never had any formal training, he was an artist – his art was unique. He made perfect scale models of Chuck Wagons, Conestoga wagons and buckboards in minute detail. these wagons have been collected by many of the Cowboy Artists of America, He was honored as a lifetime member of the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.
Surviving were his wife, Grace Bromley of the home in Pawhuska; a daughter, Eunice Diamler of Salt Lake City, Utah; three sons, C.M. “Bud” Bromley of Salt Lake City, Darrell Fink of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Robert Fink of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Anne Busch of Las Animas, Colorado; eight grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

E.W. “DUB” CARR
E.W. “Dub” Carr former resident of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, died April 15, 1994, in the University Hospital, Oklahoma City, following an extended illness. Funeral Mass was held Monday, April 18, 1994, at 10:00 a.m., in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Joseph Mazaika officiating. Interment was in the Pawhuska City Cemetery.
Dub was born September 8, 1937, in Pawhuska, the son of Harry and Cooie (McKee) Carr. He attended Pawhuska schools and was a member of the Catholic Church.
June 17, 1979, in Clinton, Oklahoma, Dub married Pat Cass, who survived at the home in Oklahoma City.
Also surviving were a daughter, Deborah Cantrell of Lake Charles, Louisiana; a step-son, Mike Lehr of Oklahoma City; a step-daughter, Sherri Crittenden of Oklahoma City; eleven grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Carolyn Cabiness and a brother, Freeman Carr.

CAROL ELAINE JOHNSON
Carol Elaine Johnson, 73, wife of Pawhuska, Oklahoma native and Academy Award Winner Ben “Son” Johnson, of Mesa, Arizona, died March 27, 1994, following an extended illness.
Services were held March 30, 1994, in the Bunker’s Garden Chapel, Mesa, Arizona, under the direction of Bunker Mortuary.
Graveside rites were held April 1, in the Pawhuska (Oklahoma) Cemetery under the direction of Johnson’s Funeral Directors.
Mrs. Johnson was born October 20, 1920 in Sherman Oaks, California. She and Ben had lived in Mesa since 1989.
HILIARY MARTIN FAULKNER
Hiliary Martin Faulkner, 88, died January 31, 1994, in the Pawhuska (Oklahoma) Nursing Home. Graveside rites were held February 2, 1994, at 3:00 p.m., in the Pawhuska Cemetery with Reverend James Edmison officiating.
Hiliary was born February 28, 1905, in Kentucky, the daughter of W. Ballard and Mary W. (Raybourn) Martin. The Martin family moved to Pawhuska in 1910 and Hiliary attended Pawhuska schools.
In 1941, in Pawhuska, Hiliary and Foreman Faulkner were married and, were engaged in cattle ranching for many years. She was a member of the Saint Thomas Episcopal Church.
Surviving are her husband, Foreman Faulkner of the home. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Victor Martin.

R.E. "JELLY" GATEWOOD
R.E. "Jelly" Gatewood, 84, resident of Wynona, Oklahoma, died September 27, 1992 in the Pawhuska Nursing Home. Funeral services were held September 30, 2002 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend James Edmison officiating.
Born May 4, 1908 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the son of Eugene Eads and Minnie (Smith) Gatewood, R.E. married Mary Conley Evertson on October 25, 1991 in Bentonville, Arkansas.
A longtime area resident, Mr. Gatewood retired in 1972 from The Texaco Company as an oil field pumper in the Atlantic Field District. He was a member of the Methodist Church, the Wah-Sha-She Masonic Lodge, was a 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite Blue Lodge and The Order of the Eastern Star. He was a fifty year member of the Masonic Lodge, was active in the Boy Scouts of America and served nineteen years as Mayor of the City of Wynona. He served twenty-six years as secretary of the Wynona Masonic Lodge and six years as secretary of The Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Gatewood of the home in Wynona; two daughters, Betty Timmons of Inola, Oklahoma and April Todd of Cleveland, Oklahoma; one son, Francis Eugene Gatewood of Sylvia, Kansas; four brothers, Keith Gatewood of Shawnee, Oklahoma, Ben Gatewood, Joe Bob Gatewood and John Gatewood, all of Norman, Oklahoma; six grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.

EMMA JEAN MILLARD AMES
Emma Jean Millard Ames, 29, died Friday, September 25, 1992, in a one-car accident east of Barnsdall, Oklahoma. Born June 6, 1963 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of Lloyd and Sue (Andrus) Millard and was a homemaker. She married Bob Ames June 7, 1991 in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Survivors in addition to her husband, Bob Ames, of the home are: Two daughters, Darci Kay and Jessica Nicole; two sons, Robert Paul and Andrew Lloyd; her parents, Lloyd and Sue Millard of Pawhuska; one sister, Ella Holliburton of Bethany, Oklahoma; three brothers, David Millard and Jason Millard both of Pawhuska and Charlie Millard of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and her maternal grandmother, Charlotte Andrus of Pawhuska.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., September 28, 1992 at the Mobley-Dodson Funeral Chapel in Sand Springs, Oklahoma with Reverend Richard Toothman officiating. Graveside services were held at 3:00 p.m., in the Pawhuska City Cemetery with Reverend Brian Blankenship officiating.
Services were under the direction of the Mobley-Dodson Funeral Service of Sand Springs.
CHARLES C. "DOC" PEARSON
Charles C. "Doc" Pearson, 80, died Monday, June 15, 1992.
Doc was born March 24, 1912 in Fremont, Ohio, the son of John Henry and Viva Gibbs Pearson. In 1934, he graduated from Ohio State University with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and moved to Oklahoma in 1946 to assume leadership of the Oklahoma A&M Veterinary Research Station in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Doc received National Honors in 1966 for his research and development of the Anaplasmosis Vaccine, an early victory over a virus that causes a deadly blood disease in cattle. The vaccine is still in use today.
Doc was a member of the Osage County Cattlemen's Association, the American Quarter Horse Association, the Oklahoma Thoroughbred Association, the Oklahoma Horseman Association, a longtime member of the Osage County Fair Board and a charter member of the Registered Hereford Association.
Doc was well-known and respected for his quality breeding of thoroughbred race horses and registered Hereford Cattle.
He was survived by his wife, Sara Pearson of the home; a daughter, Ann Erwin of Missoula, Montana; a son, Joe Pearson of Ponca City, Oklahoma; one brother, Merle Pearson of Fremont, Ohio; four grandchildren, Guy Erwin, Amity Parks, Julie Pearson and Geoffrey Pearson; four step-children, Rachel Barrett, Richard Moore, Becky Branch and Fred Moore; three step-grandchildren, Amanda Branch, Melissa Branch and Whitney Moore; two nephews, John Pearson and Gary Pearson.
Graveside rites were held June 18, 1992, in the Pawhuska Cemetery with Johnson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
LEROY RADFORD
Leroy Radford, 55, died June 15, 1992, in the Pawhuska (Oklahoma) Hospital where he was rushed after becoming ill Monday afternoon while working at the Pawhuska Airport.
Born June 29, 1936 in Stilwell, Oklahoma, the son of Robert James and Nellie Ann (Wilson) Radford, Leroy married Marjorie Steele January 18, 1959 in Miami, Oklahoma.
Leroy was a longtime employee of the City of Pawhuska with Parks and Cemetery Department and was also a horse trainer.
He was a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors included his wife, Marjorie of the home in Pawhuska; three daughters, Laurie Ann Dolasinski of Riverside, California, Nellie Louise Townley and Marjorie Lynn Ellis, both of Pawhuska; one son, James Leroy Radford of Pawhuska; his mother, Nellie Ann Radford of Pawhuska; a niece, Angelia Radford of the home; Susan and Bobby Ray Wadsworth of Branson, Missouri; two sisters, Ethel Linkard of Wichita, Kansas and Mary Hall of Hominy, Oklahoma; eight brothers, Calvin Stone of Newkirk, Oklahoma, Bobby Joe Radford of Wagoner, Oklahoma, Raymond Radford of Mounds, Oklahoma, Hershel Radford, Tom Radford (who has since died), Jack Radford, Delmar Radford and Earl Radford, all of Pawhuska; eight grandchildren, Ryan, Rodney and Gracie Dolasinski, Rebecca and Johnny Ray Deatherage, Quincy Leroy and Jacqulyn Jean Ellis and Jeremy Lee Radford and numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held June 18, 1992 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Vernon Wadsworth officiating. Interment was in the Pawhuska Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
ELSIE EMMA GIBBLE
Former Wynona, Oklahoma resident, Elsie Emma Gibble, 83, died June 15, 1992, in Tulsa. Funeral services were held June 18, 1992 in the Poteet Funeral Chapel in Pawnee, Oklahoma with Reverend Glenn Lisbon officiating. Interment was in the Highland Cemetery, Pawnee.
Born September 30, 1908 in Enid, Oklahoma the daughter of Herman John and Minnie (Raraumester) Heisler, Elsie married Roy Thomas Gibble February 1, 1932 in Enid. He preceded her in death August 26, 1966.
In addition to Wynona, the Gibbles lived in Jennings, Oklahoma and Morrison, Oklahoma. In 1987, Mrs. Gibble moved to Tulsa and resided there until her death.
Survivors included two sons, Harold Gibble of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Ronald Gibble of Tulsa; five grandchildren, Lisa of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Lori and Stephen of Broken Arrow, Tom of Tulsa and Mark of Bixby; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer Heisler of Elsmore, Kansas and Richard Heisler of Locke, New York; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. LELAH E. DEMOSS
Lelah E. DeMoss, longtime resident of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, died December 26, 1992 in Heritage Manor Convalescent Center, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, following an extended illness. Graveside rites were held December 28, 1992 in the Pawhuska City Cemetery with Reverend Larry Wallace officiating.
Born December 28, 1904 in Yonkers, Oklahoma, the daughter of Daniel H. and Martha Cordelia (Holland) Hatfield, she married Estel D. DeMoss on December 8, 1924 in Locust Grove, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on October 23, 1981.
Lelah was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pawhuska and a former member of the Business and Professional Women's Club and the Pawhuska Hospital Volunteers. She was a retired sales clerk with C.R. Anthony Company in Pawhuska.
Surviving were two daughters, Mrs. William A. (Twyla) Tinker of Houston, Texas, and Mrs. Virgil (Virginia Ann) Walker of Bartlesville; one brother, Clem Hatfield of Hominy, Oklahoma; three sisters, Virginia Ingersoll and Cornelia Kafer, both of Pawhuska and Juanita Barrett of Tulsa; nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

LEONARD O. WADSWORTH
Leonard O. Wadsworth, 60, died December 18, 1992 at his home in Lynn Addition, Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Graveside services were held Monday, December 21, 1992 in the Pawhuska City Cemetery with Reverend George Noe officiating.
Born May 11, 1932 in Pawhuska, the son of Virgil and Lena Adema (Mays) Wadsworth, he married Adula Smith Whitehorn on May 28, 1968 in Sedan, Kansas.
He was a veteran, having served in the United States Navy.
Survivors included his wife, Adula of the home in Pawhuska, Oklahoma; his father, Virgil Wadsworth and two brothers, Everett Wadsworth of Pawhuska and Bill Reeb of Florida.

BEATRICE LOUISE VELA
Beatrice Louise Vela, 75, 200 East Third Street, Pawhuska, Oklahoma, died October 5, 1992, at her home following an extended illness.
Funeral Mass was held October 7, in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Joseph Mazaika officiating. Interment was in the Albert Joseph Powell Memorial Cemetery, Hominy, Oklahoma.
Born December 16, 1916, in Maramec, Oklahoma, the daughter of William M. and Cornelia (Stone) Minix, Mrs. Vela was a longtime Pawhuska area resident. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Klash-Kah-She Club and was a retired hair dresser.
Survivors were: A son, Bill L. Cooper of Clearwater, Kansas; one brother, Douglas Minix of Earlsboro, Oklahoma; four sisters, Shirley Couffer and Maxine Gilkey, both of Hominy, and Virginia Fletcher and Barbara Baird both of Pawhuska; and two granddaughters, Tina L. Cooper Kastning of Pawhuska and Tracy L. Cooper Bickford of Clearwater, Kansas.

DONALD L. SODERSTROM
Donald L. Soderstrom, 72, died at his home in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, on Friday, February 28, 1992.
Born September 27, 1919 in Pawhuska, the son of John Floyd and Rozzie (Conley) Soderstrom, Don married Maxine Harvey on February 16, 1941.
A lifelong resident of Pawhuska, Don owned and operated the Manhattan Cafe and was a retired rancher, stock broker and feed company representative. He was a strong supporter of The 4-H Club and was a member of the Oklahoma and Osage County Cattlemen's Association, Pawhuska Golf and Country Club and The American Legion, having served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Surviving were his wife, Maxine of the home; one son, Alan Soderstrom of Edmond, Oklahoma; two daughters, Dee Dee Burton of Mesa, Arizona and Mary Don Storts of Ardmore, Oklahoma; two brothers, Joe Soderstrom of Pawhuska and Eddie Soderstrom of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; one sister, Regina Oldham of Saratoga, California; six grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.
Friends were asked to contribute to The Pawhuska Educational Trust in memory of Don Soderstrom.
Graveside services were held in the Pawhuska Cemetery with Father Joseph Mazaika officiating. Military rites were presented by American Legion Posts of Pawhuska.

Funeral services for John H. Keith, 72, of northwest Pawhuska, Oklahoma, were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 22, 1987, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel, Pawhuska, with interment in the Pawhuska Cemetery. Military rites were presented by the Pawhuska American Legion Posts. Mr. Keith died July 20, 1987 in the Four Seasons Nursing Home, Tulsa, following an extended illness.
John was born September 26, 1914 in Harrison, Arkansas, the son of William Henry and Zillie (Armstrong) Keith. A longtime resident of Pawhuska, John was a Disabled Veteran, serving in World War II in the United States Army. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and American Legion Post 198.
Survivors include two sons: John W. Keith of Huntington Beach, California and Maurice Keith of Disney, Oklahoma; two sisters, Garlyne Lewis of Tulsa and Billie Hart of Afton, Oklahoma; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Johnson Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.
SHELBY MILTON McGRAW, Jr.
Graveside services for Shelby Milton McGraw, 57, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, were held January 3, 1987, in the White Rose Cemetery, Bartlesville with Father William Skeehan of St. James Catholic Church officiating under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home.
Mr. McGraw was born October 14, 1929 in Oklahoma to Shelby James and Leona Bonnie (Couch) McGraw. He was reared and received his education in the Bartlesville area. He served with the U.S. Army/Air Corp during World War II and, after his honorable discharge, returned to Bartlesville to make his home. For a number of years he was an independent truck driver, a member of the James H. Teel American Legion Post #105 and the National Rifle Association.
Mr. McGraw was survived by two sons, Johnny McGraw and Steve McGraw and two daughters, Janie Pitre and Michelle McGraw all of Louisiana; one sister, Mrs. Leroy (Dinah) Widowski of Jenks, Oklahoma; one brother, Don McGraw of Bartlesville; several grandchildren, a number of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
LEONA BONNIE (COUCH) McGRAW
Mrs. Leona Bonnie (Couch) McGraw, 72, longtime resident of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and retired Cities Service Company employee, died at 7:00 a.m., Friday, March 19, 1982 in the Jane Phillips Medical Center following several months illness.
Funeral services for Mrs. McGraw were held March 23, 1982 in the Memory Chapel of the Arnold Moore Funeral residence with the Reverend Richard Ludden, minister of the Evangelical Methodist Church officiating. Casket escorts were Fred R. Brown, George Carroll, Gerald Kelsey, Edward Stephens, Edward J. Martin and William S. Johnson. “Peace in the Valley” and “The Old Rugged Cross” were performed by Mr. Clinton Thatch, vocalist, accompanied by Mrs. Bettye Spangenburg, organist. Committal prayers and interment was directed in the White Rose Cemetery, Bartlesville by the Arnold Moore Funeral Service.
Mrs. McGraw was born July 3, 1909 in Falcon, Laclede County, Missouri, the daughter of Arminta (Morehouse) Couch and Andrew Couch. When Leona was ten years old, she came with her family by covered wagon to Slick, Oklahoma and began her education in the rural schools near Slick before moving to Ponca City, Oklahoma in 1926 and completing her education.
October 9, 1928, in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, Leona married Shelby James McGraw. Mr. McGraw was active in ranching in Washington and Osage Counties where he was employed with the Drummond, Chapman-Barnard, Mullendore and K.S. Adams ranches until they moved to Bartlesville. He preceded her in death on January 11, 1966.
Mrs. McGraw was employed by the Cities Service Company in Bartlesville until she retired in 1956. She was a member of the Evangelical Methodist Church.
Survivors included two sons, Shelby Milton McGraw and Donald Perry McGraw, both of Bartlesville and a daughter, Mrs. LeRoy (Dinah Arvilla) Widowski of Jenks, Oklahoma; eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; one brother, Virgil Andrew Couch of Mendon, Missouri and two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Hunt and Mrs. Vina Carrington, both of Pawhuska. Three brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.
EDNA L. (COUCH) SHORE
Mrs. Edna L. Shore, 59, died Tuesday, November 15, 1972, at her home in Hutchinson, Kansas, following a short illness.
Edna was born May 26, 1913, at Falcon, Missouri, to Andrew and Arminta (Morehouse) Couch, She moved to Hutchinson from Great Bend, Kansas in 1958.
Survivors were: a brother, Virgil Couch of Jefferson City, Missouri; sisters, Mrs. Leona McGraw of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Mrs. Myrtle Hunt and Mrs. Vina Carrington of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Betty Souligny of Ponca City, Oklahoma.
Funeral services were held November 17, 1972, at Johnson and Sons Chapel in Hutchinson with Reverend David Curtis officiating. Burial was in the Eastside Cemetery, Hutchinson.
JACKY RAY VADEN
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 29, 1964, at the Church of God in Webb City, Oklahoma, for Jacky Ray Vaden, 28, who was killed April 25, 1964, in an automobile accident at Moorcroft, Wyoming. The Whitlock Funeral Home in Shidler, Oklahoma, was in charge of arrangements and burial was in Grandview Cemetery at Kaw City (Oklahoma).
Mr. Vaden was born January 16, 1936 at Carter Nine, Oklahoma, the son of Jesse Lee Vaden Sr., and Lola (Weaver) Vaden. May 16, 1955, he married Joann Johnson in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. He entered the United States Army November 19, 1958 and, at the time of his death was in inactive reserves. He was employed as an oilfield roughneck in Moorcroft at the time of his death.
Survivors included: His wife, Joann and a son, Jacky Ray Vaden Jr., both of Moorcroft; his parents of Webb City, Oklahoma; three brothers, Jessie Lee Vaden, Jr., Neal Melvin Vaden and Jerry Edward Vaden all of the Shidler area; and two sisters, Sally Louise Dady of Buena Vista, Colorado, and Dolly Mae Parks of Pawhuska; several nieces, nephews, and cousins and a host of friends.
JAMES SHELBY McGRAW, Sr.
Mr. James Shelby McGraw, Sr., 62, of 211 ½ South Johnstone, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, died at 3:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 11, 1966 in the Washington County Hospital following a brief illness.
Mr. McGraw was born June 6, 1903 in Avant, Oklahoma, the son of Clay McGraw and ??? Landis. As a small child he moved with his parents to Barnsdall, Oklahoma where he was reared and received his education. As a young man he employed himself with Chapman-Barnard Ranch, north of Pawhuska, Oklahoma.
October 9, 1928, Shelby married Miss Leona Couch in Pawhuska where they established their first home until 1941 when they moved to Bartlesville. He was associated with the A.M. Hughes ranch and later was employed by Reda Pump Company, National Zinc Company and the City of Bartlesville. He retired from the City of Bartlesville because of illness.
Survivors included one daughter, Mrs. Leroy (Dinah) Widowski of Jenks, Oklahoma; two sons, Shelby McGraw, Jr., of Dewey, Oklahoma and Donald P. McGraw of Bartlesville; one brother, Perry J. McGraw of Ponca City, Oklahoma; two half-brothers, Sylvester McGraw of Louisiana and Leo McGraw of Claremore, Oklahoma; one half-sister, Mrs. Blanche Youngblood of Borger, Texas, ten grandchildren and numerous of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held January 14, 1966, in the Keeley-Neekamp Funeral Home, Bartlesville, with Reverend Claude Blackford, pastor of the Peoples Church officiating. Interment was in the White Rose Cemetery, Bartlesville.
SALLIE JOHNSON McARTHUR
Last rites were held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel for Mrs. Sallie Johnson McArthur, 54, who died early Saturday morning, November 14, 1953) in the Pawhuska (Oklahoma) Municipal Hospital where she had been confined for two weeks.
The Reverend George Newby, pastor of the Assembly of God Church officiated.
Raymond and Harold Red Corn, accompanied by Mrs. LaVerne Harris, sang a group of hymns.
Casket bearers were Jeff Hendricks, Thomas Rogers, Lloyd Whitetree and Flo McKee, all of Pawhuska; H.E. Mossbarger of Fairfax, Oklahoma; and Bill Lindley, Oklahoma City.
Burial was in the Pawhuska City Cemetery.
Mrs. McArthur was born June 19, 1899, in Cowley County, Kansas, (the daughter of Charles Henry Johnson and Katie {Arthur} Johnson). She was married September 3, 1946, to Wilburn McArthur, who passed away in June, 1950.
Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Adula Whitehorn; a son, Joe Smith; and five grandchildren (Sabra Smith, Sandra Smith, Joe Brown Smith, Charles Smith and Louise Smith), all of Pawhuska. She also leaves her mother and step-father, Mrs. Katie Simmons and Frank Simmons of Pawhuska; a sister, Mrs. Goldie Young; four half-sisters, Joan, Charlotte and Henryetta Johnson, all of Pawhuska; and Jean Gorham of Tulsa; her step-mother, Mrs. Vina Johnson and a niece, Diana Harrison both of Pawhuska.
