Charles Durall

Former Wewoka resident Charles Durall died Dec. 26, 2002 in Sebastopol, Calif. at the age of 88. Durall was born March 10, 1913 in Welch. He is survived by one son, Ivan Alan Durall of Greenbrae, Calif., Randa Durall of Guerneville, Calif., and Melo Richter of Elkhorn, Neb.; three grandchildren and two great-granchildren. Services were under the direction of Adobe Creek Funeral Home.

Shirley Ann Compton

HEALDTON – Graveside fu- neral services for Bowlegs graduate Shirley Ann Compton are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Olive Cemetery. Bro. Phil Fox is set to officiate. Services are under the direction of Spivey’s Reser Funeral Home. Compton died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002 in Las Vegas at the age of 66. She was born Feb. 3, 1935 in Sapulpa to William H. and Lavon (Catlett) Carter. She lived in Las Vegas for over 20 years where she worked as a pit clerk at the Frontier Hotel and Casino. Compton was preceded in death by her father and her husband. She is survived by one son, David Compton of Seminole; one daughter, Cherie Thompson of Platter; her mother of Healdton; one sister, Nancy Hoskins of Lawton; two brothers, Jim Carter of Ardmore and John Robert Carter of Oklahoma City; and one granddaughter.

Dorothy Martin

Funeral services for longtime Seminole resident Dorothy June Martin are scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. David Karges will officiate the services. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Martin died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Oklahoma City. She was born to Lon Villines and Lillian (Templeton) Villines on Nov. 23, 1923 in McAlester. Martin had been a resident of Seminole since the age of two. She married Maurice Martin on Sept. 7, 1941 in Las Vegas, Nev. Martin worked at Seminole Steam Laundry for 16 years, also working at Adwan’s Specialty Shop and Curry’s Jewelry. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Seminole, and was also a member of the United Methodist Women of the Church and a member of the Flower and Garden Club. Martin was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Melba Seymour; and one brother, L.J. Villines. She is survived by her husband, Maurice, of the home; two sons, Max Martin, Sulphur, and Matt Martin, Tulsa; three sisters, Norissa Richardson, Seminole, Janna Clinton, Shawnee, and Doris Notley, Oklahoma City; and three grandchildren. Casket bearers were Bob Webster, Fred Basler, Bedford Brewer, John Humphrey, Ron Mitchell, John Morris, and Dennis Roesler.

Eugene Lashley

Funeral services for Seminole resident Eugene Lashley are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel. Rev. Rick Harrison is set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Lashley died Friday, Jan. 5, 2002 at Seminole Medical Center at the age of 82. He was born March 26, 1919 in Brown (Township) to Cornellious and Lizzie (Venson) Lashley. He married Ola Mable (Chesser) in March of 1963 in Vernon, Texas. Lashley was a truck driver for Austin Drilling for many years before retiring in the late 1970’s. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bowlegs. Lashely was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, John Lashley in 1986 and Roger Lashley in 1970; one grandson, Johnny Lashley in 1965; three brothers and six sisters. He is survived by his wife of the home; two sons, Ron Lashley of Carollton, Texas and Chuck Flewellen of Dayton, Ohio; four daughters, Linda Yancey and Debbie Anson, both of Seminole, and Kay Alvis and Lee Carol Flewellen, both of Sacramento, Calif.; one brother, Palmer Lashley of Redding, Calif.; 20 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and the mother of his children, Marie Stevens of Seminole.

Elmer Brewer

Funeral services for Wewoka resident Elmer Brewer are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Stout Funeral Home Chapel in Wewoka. Rev. Johnny Chesser is set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Holdenville City Cemetery under the direction of Stout Funeral Home. Brewer died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002 at Holdenville General Hospital at the age of 84. He was born July 18, 1917 in Stuart to Sam Brewer and Molly Moore. He was raised in the Stuart area and attended School at Chickasha. Brewer married Lenora (Lawrence) Brewer on March 15, 1974 in Ada. He was a retired employer with the city of Holdenville Landfill. He also worked as a heavy equipment operator and a farmer. Brewer was a member of the House of Prayer Church in Wewoka. He was preceded in death by parents Sam and Molly Brewer. He is survived by his wife of the home; one daughter, Loretta Byerly of Holdenville; one sister, Ola Williams of California; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are Kenny Brewer, Donald Brewer, A.L. Lucas, Curtis Ledbetter, Floyd Ledbetter and Evert Ledbetter.

Roxie Blackshire

Funeral services for Seminole resident Roxie Keesee Blackshire are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Lima. Rev. W.E. Cooper is set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Lima Cemetery under the direction of Myers Mortuary. Blackshire died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 at Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 89. She was born April 9, 1912 in Wetumka to Paul and Randy Keesee. She retired from First United Methodist Church where she worked for many years. Blackshire was a member of First Baptist Church of Lima and served in the Missionary Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rayford Houston; her parents; four brothers, Henry, Joe, Bozie and Clarence Keesee; and two sisters, Mary Bruner and Lela Mae Harper. She is survived by one daugh- ter, Mildred Blackshire; one sister, Margretta Douglas of Claborne Texas; three grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Luther Cornett Jr.

Funeral services for longtime Seminole resident Luther Harrison Cornett, Jr., are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Doyle Long will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Cornett died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002 at Seminole Medical Center at the age of 75. He was born to Luther Cornett, Sr., and Fannie (Robinson) Cornett on March 18, 1926 in St. Petersburg, Fla. Cornett was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was preceded in death by his father; one brother, Charles Cornett; and two sisters, Patricia Capps and Marion Mayfield. Cornett is survived by his mother, Fannie Cornett, Seminole; and one sister, Frances McElroy, Seminole.

Lucille Ball Jenkins

COVINGTON, LA – Funeral services for Seminole native Lucille Ball Jenkins are scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home. Burial is to follow at 1 p.m. Friday at Little Cemetery in Seminole County. Jenkins died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001 at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Lee Jenkins; one son, Jerry L. Jenkins; two brothers and three sisters. She is survived by one son, Ronald L. Jenkins; one brother, W.B. Ball; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Marie Jones

Graveside services for former Seminole County resident Marie Jones are scheduled for 12 noon Monday at Rest Haven Cemetery, Seminole. Burial will be under the direction of Thompson’s Harveson & Cole Funeral Home in Fort Worth, Texas. She will lie in state at the funeral home until 8 p.m. Sunday. Jones died Friday at the age of 90. She was born May 9, 1911, in Calico Rock, Ark. To John Thomas and Mary Ellen (Arnold) Churchill. She lived in Seminole most of her life and was a member of First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her son, Harvey Jones. Survivors include her daughter, Yvonne Woods, Fort Worth; numerous grandchildren; and one sister, Lula Harding, Tulsa.

Louise Lewis

Funeral services for Emma Louise Lewis are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Little Assembly of God Praise Center. Rev. Lee Jones will officiate; burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park, Shawnee, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Lewis died early Saturday at Baptist Hospital, Oklahoma City. She was born March 1, 1925, in Bristow to Emma Lara Velma (Martin) and Louis Daniel Estep. She moved to Seminole 65 years ago from Bristow, and worked as a sales clerk, retiring in the mid 1980s. She was a member of the Little Assembly of God Praise Center. She married John V. Lewis on Jan. 5, 1995, in Seminole; he survives her, of the home. Other survivors include three stepsons, Paris Carrigar, Monroe, Rick L. Lewis, Shawnee, and John M. Lewis, Bowlegs; two stepdaughters, Betty Whitson, Poteau, and Barbara J. Hail, Decatur, Texas; one sister, Ella Mae Ellis, Seminole; nine grandchildren, Darrell Bookout, Mark Bookout, Jill Bookout-Thompson, Megan Lewis, Ryan Lewis, Jeffery Lewis, Charity Mullins, Elizabeth Hail, Tonya Scates and Billy Hill; and several great-grandchildren.

Garland ‘Pop’ Carter

HOLDENVILLE – Funeral services for Garland “Pop” Carter, the father of a Wewoka resident, were scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hudson-Phillips Chapel. Rev. Jon Ewers is set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Yeager Cemetery under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home. Carter died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001 in Holdenville at the age of 85. He was born July 24, 1916 in Pharoah to Sarah (Williams) and James Carter. He was raised in the Pharoah and Wetumka areas. Carter married Artie Hill in 1963. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Arthur, Reo, Arley and George Carter; one son, Lonnie Carter; and two grandsons, Garland D. Sanchez and Bradley D. Carter. He is survived by his wife of the home; eight children, Wayne Carter of Wewoka, James C. Carter of Holdenville, Jean Elliott of Holdenville, David E. Carter of Yeager, Kenneth Storts of Broken Arrow, Linda Johnson of Blytheville, Ark., Terry J. Kirby of Shawnee, and Cathy Barksdale of Shawnee; 27 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are to be Shawn Carter, Philip Carter, Chad Elliott, Jonathan Barksdale, Rusty Carter, Walter Barksdale, Matthew Barksdale, and Daniel Storts. Honorary pallbearers are T.J. Sanchez, James Fernandez, and Christopher Kirby. The family requests donations be made to the Yeager Cemetery Fund.

Fremont Pope

TECUMSEH – Funeral services for former Seminole resident Fremont F. Pope are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Tecumseh. Dr. Tim Walker and Rev. W.F. Crow are set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home. Pope died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001 in Shawnee at the age of 90. He was born Aug. 7, 1911 in Waco to Willie Ollie and Eva Katherine (Castleman) Pope. He was a 1929 graduate of Shawnee High School. In 1933, Pope married Sibyl Agatha Trimble. She preceded him in death in 1977. He then married Oleta Adams. She preceded him in death in 1996. During World War II, he worked at the Remington Ammunitions plant in Denver, Colo. Pope also worked for Norton’s Cheverolet of Shawnee and Norton Ramsey of Seminole until retiring in 1966. He was a deacon since 1941 and taught Sunday School for 55 years. He had been a member of Calvary Baptist in Shawnee, First Baptist in Seminole, Second Baptist in Seminole, and First Baptist in Tecumseh. Pope was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Keith; sister, Laura Irene Taylor; and two stepsons, Jimmy and Steve Adams. He is survived by three daughters, Margaret Akin of Shawnee, Carol Anglin of Longview, Wash., and Cynthia Males of Tulsa; three sons, Judson Pope of Church Hill, Tenn., John Richard Pope of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jimmy Calvis of Edmond; two stepsons, Joe Adams of Madisonville, Texas, and Bill Adams of El Reno; one sister, Ruth Mitchell of Houston, Texas; 32 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren.

Freddie Morton

SHAWNEE – Funeral services for Freddie Paul “The Great One” Morton are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Baptist Church. Larry Goins and Bill Matthews are set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home. Morton died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001 in a car accident in Shawnee at the age of 58. He was born Dec. 24, 1943 in Pine Springs to Fredrick Lee and Jewel Addie (Hadden) Morton. He was a 1961 graduate of Shawnee High School. Morton was reared in Farris and Lindsey and moved to Shawnee in 1950. He had resided in Bethel Acres since 1972. He married Linda Kay Yoder in Holdenville on June 15, 1963. He was a member of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce and a supported of the Bethel FFA Chapter and the Pottawatomie County United Way. Morton was a successful business man and a friend to many, who dedicated his life to work. He enjoyed fishing and camping and barbecuing with friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents. Morton is survived by his wife of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Cassie Morton of Bethel Acres; two daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Stephen Robbins of Bethel Acres and Shelly and Kevin Sawyer of Hewitt, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Aaron Morton, Jericho Morton, Stormie Morton, Tyler Robbins, Ryan Robbins, Tristan Robbins, Tiffany Robbins, Patrick Sawyer, Jessica Sawyer, Jennifer Sawyer; one sister, Myrtle Low of Choctaw; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Betty Morton of Kansas, Ernest and Vesta Morton of Tecumseh, Darrell and Doris Morton of Enid, Mike and Ginger Morton of Meeker, and Dale and Nancy Morton of Tecumseh; one uncle, Ben Morton of Antlers; two aunts, Minnie Ada,s of Boswell and Lois Elkins of Tishomingo; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.

Annell Gregg

Funeral services for former Seminole County resident Annell Gregg are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Historic Strothers Chapel. Rev. Carl Whitfield is set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Gregg died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001 at Ambassador Manor Nursing Home in Tulsa at the age of 89. She was born Aug. 20, 1912 in Oklahoma to Arthur A. and Georgia (Chastain) Criswell. She married L.J. Gregg Oct. 12, 1932 in Wewoka. He preceded Gregg in death on Sept. 23, 1980. She was a homemaker and a member of P.E.O. She attended the University of Oklahoma for three years. Gregg was also preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by one son, L.J. Gregg of Tulsa, one sister, Lorene Beattie of Seminole; and three grandchildren.
