Hurchell Franklin "Pat" Pattison, 81, of Baker City, died Jan. 20, 2003.
A memorial will be held Feb. 1, at 1 p.m. at Baker City Christian Church, 2998 Eighth St.
Mr. Pattison was born Dec. 17, 1921, at Gowen, Okla.
He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. He married Lucille Crabtree in July 1959.
He spent 23 years working at Ketchikan Pulp Mill in Ketchikan, Alaska.
Mr. Pattison retired in 1982 and began a ministry of building and remodeling churches for the next 14 years. Then he decided it was time to retire and enjoy a few years fishing on the Snake River.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Pattison; daughter, Pegi DeWalt; sons, Scott Pattison, Paul Crabtree and Buz Crabtree; sisters, Cleo Chaney and Mary Parks; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

La Vaughn Walker
La Vaughn "Oscar Mayer" Albert Walker, died Jan. 23, 2003, at Twin Firs Retirement Center in La Grande.
His graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Island City Cemetery. Pastor Wilfred Nitz of the Faith Lutheran Church of La Grande will officiate.
Mr. Walker was born April 26, 191, to Albert Ross Walker and Emma Huntley Walker. His mother died when he was a young boy. He spent most of his youth in foster homes.
He lived in La Grande most of his life until a few years after the death of his wife, Jessie Vess, in January 1963. On December 22, 1970, he married Cleo Sword of Baker City. He lived in Baker City until July 2002 when he moved in the Twin Firs Retirement Center.
Mr. Walker worked for the railroad while in La Grande and did TV repairs (Crystal TV) as a hobby and extra job. When the ham radioers were popular, he was totally into it, making contacts all over the United States and Canada. He went by "Alligator."
He loved telling stories to those who would listen, elaborating to make the story more interesting.
Survivors include two sons, Darrel of Bakersfield, Calif., and Thomas of La Grande; a daughter, Mary Sutton of Pahrump, Nev.; 13 grandchildren and several great- grandchildren.
He was married three times. His wives all died earlier, the last two during their marriages.

Robert Carney
Robert Carney, 64, of Haines, died Jan. 21, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.
His memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Community of Christ Church, 2525 College St. His graveside service will be at 2:45 p.m. at the Haines Cemetery.
Robert Wetzel Carney was born Dec. 17, 1938, at Port Angeles, Wash. He was the son of George D. and Mary Idalia Cramer Carney.
He served four years as a private in the U.S. Marine Corps at 29 Palms, Calif. He also served overseas at Okinawa, Japan.
He was a dedicated volunteer for the Family History Center at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a retired long- haul over-the-road driver and former lumber mill worker. He was a past noble grand of the International Order of Odd Fellows, No. 25.
Survivors include his wife, Edith A. Carney of Haines; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a half brother and a half sister.

Helen Mattes
Helen Violet Mattes, 87, a longtime Baker City resident, died Jan. 20, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, 1734 Third St. Vault interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. There will be a reception afterward at the First Lutheran Church.
Visitations will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave.
Mrs. Mattes was born Sept. 13, 1915, at Ritter to Fred and Cecil Fedler. She attended grade school at Ritter and graduated from high school at Echo. She graduated from Eastern Oregon Normal School at La Grande in 1936. She taught Grades 1-8 in one-room schoolhouses at Granite and Lime before dedicating her life as a homemaker and mother.
On Sept. 15, 1940, she married Alfred Mattes in Baker City. They lived in Baker City where Al worked at the Democrat-Herald (now the Baker City Herald) for 25 years.
She was a long-standing, active member of the First Lutheran Church. She was an active volunteer with scouting, 4-H, and her church. She had a great knowledge of the outdoors and plants of the region, and had a passion for gardening. She had multiple hobbies, including many interesting collections.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Byrd, and her husband, Bob, of Irrigon; two sons, Jim Mattes and his wife, Jan, of La Grande, and Bill Mattes of Baker City; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Mattes, in 1985; a grandson, Brian Byrd, in 1991, and a sister, Irene Burnette.

El Nora Kandle
El Nora M. Kandle, 73, a resident of Baker City, died January 16, 2003, at her home.
Memorial services for Mrs. Kandle will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St.
Mrs. Kandle was born July 11, 1929, to James Robert and Freda Augusta (Dietz) Graham at Klamath Falls. She attended school in Klamath Falls and went to work for the railroad soup house at the age of 14. She worked there for a couple of years and then moved to Silverton where she continued to work as a baby sitter, a cook in the Sprouse Ritz Dinner and the cannery.
At the age of 18, she moved to California to attend Pilgrim Evangelistic Institute, a bible college in El Monte, Calif. She attended for two years and finished high school and college at the same time. In 1948, she moved back to Silverton and worked at the canneries and fields until she went out on her own following the fruit crop.
In January 1949, she went to work caring for a woman and her child. A couple in Unity— Fred and Clettith De Meyer — who owned the Burnt River Mercantile, asked her to care for their baby.
Mrs. Kandle had never heard western music and went to a dance at The Elbow Room. This is where she met Lynn R. Kandle, and they were married on May 20, 1950, in Unity. It was the first wedding held in the Unity Community Hall.
The couple also helped rebuild The Waterhole Saloon, in this same time frame and in payment received one-third ownership for a time.
Mrs. Kandle continued to work as a cook in The Waterhole, The Elbow Room and on the ranch. She also helped cook for ranch crews throughout the area. They lived in Unity until 1974, when they moved to Baker City where Lynn continued to work for Ellingson's. She went to work cooking at various restaurants such as the Oregon Trail, Haines Steakhouse, The Blue and White and McDonalds. She retired from work in 2000.
She enjoyed 4-H and taught art projects, crocheting, knitting and ceramics to many. She was president of the 4-H Leaders Association and felt that being part of the 4-H was her greatest achievement. She became a 4-H Leader in the early 1970s.
She is survived by her children, Katherine and Carl Knack of Walla Walla, Wash., Donald and Tina Kandle of Unity, and Hugh and Gloria Kandle of Reedpoint, Mont.; sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and Jim Hird, of Salem; brothers, Robert James Graham of Salem and William Royal Graham of Virginia; grandchildren, Amber Havers of Wisconsin, Beverly Havers, Walla Walla, Wash., Wyatt Kandle, Gavin Kandle and Bryson Kandle, all of Unity, Dalton Kandle of Reedpoint, Mont.; stepgrandchildren, Danny Earls of Portland, Stacy Goodrich of Reedpoint, Mont., and Sarah Goodrich of Boise; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lynn, her brother, Roy Graham and two sisters-in-law.

Ethel Graven
Ethel L. Graven, 96, of Weiser, Idaho, a former resident of Baker City and Halfway, died Jan. 19, 2003, at an assisted living center in Weiser.
Her graveside funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Eagle Valley Cemetery in Richland. Pastor Gordon Bond of the Richland Christian Church will officiate.
Visitations will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave.
Ethel Graven was born on Sept. 9, 1906, at Halfway to William T. Clark and Lillie Gillett. Ethel was raised at Halfway by her dad. Her mother died when she was 5. She spent a lot of time with her dad at sheepherding camps.
She married Ray Graven at Baker City on Dec. 19, 1922. They spent most of their lives together in Richland, about 57 years. They owned a small farm there.
Ethel worked as a cook at the Richland school. She loved the children and she loved cooking for them. She was a wonderful cook.
She was a very loving person who loved her family very much. She will be missed by all her family and those who knew her.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Mike Mikkelson; a daughter, Alice Hazlet; a son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Eleanor Graven; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister; two brothers; and three children, Dale Graven, Bob Graven and Gill Graven.
Dorothy Palmer
Dorothy Hayhurst Palmer, 92, a former longtime Baker County resident, died Jan. 11, 2003, of complications from double pneumonia.
Her memorial service was Saturday at Mill Valley, Calif.
Dorothy was born July 23, 1910, at Rose Park and lived for many years in Baker County. She married Harold Palmer, a Baker City fireman, in 1935. They lived on Third Street until moving to Gresham in 1969. In the mid 1980s she moved to Greenbrae, Calif., to be closer to her two daughters.
Her granddaughter, Monica, read a poem honoring her at her memorial service.
Survivors include her two daughters and their spouses, Pam and Bob Pedrazzini of Mill Valley, Calif., and Chalayne and Dean Gallinatti of Greenbrae, Calif.; two grandchildren, Monica and Michael Pedrazzini; nephews and a niece and their families and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents; and a brother, Vernon Hayhurst.
Theta Dinger
Theta H. Dinger, 90, of Baker City, Jan. 18, 2003, at a foster care home in Baker City.
Her graveside services will be at 1 p.m. MST Wednesday at the Valley View Cemetery in Vale. Pastor Roy Obermeier of the Willowcreek Community Church at Willowcreek will officiate.
Mrs. Dinger was born June 25, 1912, at Alphena Pass, Ark., a daughter of James Howard and Minnie Aleta Walker Rea. She was raised at Barber, Idaho, and was educated at Boise.
She married Jiles D. Dinger at Vale on July 13, 1932. They moved from Boise to Jamieson in 1935 and farmed there until moving to Sumpter in 1959. In Sumpter they owned and operated the Community Store together with Wayne and Ardis Rogers for seven years. They also were involved in mining.
They moved to Baker City in 1987 because of Theta's health and had lived here since. She loved to crochet and do needlework and she did ceramics for a number of years. She also loved her family and having family get-togethers.
Survivors include her husband, Jiles D. Dinger of Baker City; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Mary Dinger of Parma, Idaho; son, Kent Dinger of Vale; son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Judy Dinger of Kingston, Idaho; sister and brother-in-law, Ardis and Wayne Rogers of Baker City; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two half sisters and two half brothers.

Ethyl Thomas
Ethyl Beatrice Thomas, 83, of Island City, a former Baker City resident, died Jan. 12, 2003, at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise after a long illness.
At her request, there will be no service. Riverside Mortuary at Garden City, Idaho, was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Thomas was born April 5, 1919, to Alva Amos and Georgia Beatrice Hudspeth Gardner in Baker City. She was a Baker High School graduate. She married Harry A. "Seth" Thomas on Nov. 11, 1953, at Sherwood.
The family lived in the La Grande area off and on for a number of years. She was a member of the Summerville Baptist Church and enjoyed crocheting, fancy work of all kinds, reading the Bible and camping.
Survivors include her husband of Island City; a daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and Don Emmons of La Grande; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jo Dickinson of Baker City and Teen Hansel of La Grande; and other relatives.

Neva Cash
Neva Eliza Cash, 87, a former longtime Baker City resident, died Jan. 9, 2003, at the Keiser Permanente Hospital at Santa Clara, Calif.
Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Pastor Lenny Spooner of the First Church of the Nazarene will officiate. Vault interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Neva was born on June 22, 1915, in Arkansas to Thomas H. and Maud Mills Simms. She attended school at Little Rock, Ark., and graduated in 1933.
She married Alvin M. Cash on Sept. 7, 1940, at Vancouver, Wash. They owned and operated a dry-cleaning business in Portland until their retirement in 1971 when they moved to Baker City.
After Alvin's death in 1988, Neva continued living in Baker City until 1994 when she moved to Salem. She moved to San Jose, Calif., in 1999 to be near family.
Neva loved traveling, making ceramics and doing embroidery work. She had traveled all over the world and around the United States.
Survivors include daughters, Carolyn Hansen of Santa Clara, Calif., and Barbara Cash of Salem; granddaughters, Renate Kammersgard of Santa Clara, Calif., and Sheryl Balthrop of Eugene; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin; and two sisters.
