Lorraine Bowman

Lorraine Bowman, 80, a former Baker Valley resident, died Dec. 10, 2001.

At her request, there will be no services. Disposition was by cremation. Cloverdale Funeral Home in Boise was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Lorraine Georgeoff was born March 13, 1921, the only daughter of Anna and Vasil Georgeoff. After growing up in Portland, she married Elbert Bowman and raised three sons, John, Paul, and Gary (Joe).

The family lived for many years in Baker Valley. She was active in the VFW auxiliary in Baker City, and in Heppner.

She is survived by three sons and numerous grandchildren.

Dale Kennedy

Dale Dee Kennedy, 40, of Baker City died Dec. 9, 2001, at his home.

Disposition was by cremation. There will be a family gathering later.

Dale was born at Nevada City, Calif., on Feb. 19, 1961. He lived at Grass Valley, Calif., until he was 26.

Dale was known for his kind and generous heart. He never met a stranger. Dale enjoyed cruising around town with his wife, and honking at his friends.

From the time he could walk he loved to go fishing. Dale also enjoyed yard sales and was a CB enthusiast. One of the highlights of his young adult life was driving truck for a traveling carnival where he was known as “Carney Joe.” The greatest joy of his life began when he married his wife, Dawn Seickman, on Nov. 5, 1995.

Survivors include his wife of six years, Dawn Kennedy; his parents, Stanley and Cynthia Kennedy of Reno, Nev.; his grandmother, Inez Kennedy of Nevada City, Calif.; four brothers and one sister, Dean Kennedy and his wife, LaNora, of Juneau, Alaska, Russell Kennedy and his wife, Leisa, of Baker City, his twin brother, Danny Kennedy, and his wife, Kathy, of Las Vegas, Nev., Rick Kennedy of Grass Valley, Calif., and Stephanie Martin-Kennedy of Auburn, Calif.; 13 nieces and nephews and nine grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Laquita Joy Kennedy; and his grandfather, Raymond Kennedy.

Maude Coombes

Maude Pearl Coombes, 97, of Haines, died Dec. 8, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

Disposition was by cremation at Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Crematory. A memorial service will be scheduled later.

Mrs. Coombes was born on April 1, 1904, at Pine Hill, Ky., to John Clark and Liza Edwards Johnson. She was the last of 12 children.

She moved from Kentucky to St. Maries, Idaho, and then to the Republic, Wash., area where she met Oscar Cullen Coombes. They were married on May 12, 1922.

They lived in various places in Washington until the fall of 1928 when they came to Sparta. They lived in various places in Eastern Oregon until 1940 when they established their home on Salmon Creek near Baker City. They left the area during the war years and went to Stanfield to help in the war effort. They kept their home on Salmon Creek as their permanent residence. She and Oscar were married just short of 66 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Clark and Liza Edwards Johnson; her husband, Oscar; brothers, Alonzo, Freeman and Gay Johnson; sisters, Ida, Georgia, Laura and Dora; daughter, Erma Gray; a granddaughter, Jean Haluber; and a great-grandson, Virgil Knight.

Survivors include Donald Coombes of Haines, Benjamin and Doris Coombes of Stanfield, Jasper and Lois Coombes of Richland, George and Perry Coombes of Silegmon, Mo., Edward and Elise Coombes of Winchester, Idaho, and Jabudah and Alan Grossmiller of Baker City; 30 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Gertrude Spencer of Troy, Idaho, Dorothy Stuart of Omak, Wash., and Vertha Berry of Woodland, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.

Jeremiah Miller

Jeremiah John Miller, 81, a longtime Medical Springs resident, died Dec. 5, 2001, at his home.

There will be a memorial service later.

Jeremiah was born at Baxter Springs, Kan., where he grew up on his grandmother’s farm. He graduated from Joplin High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, which took him to Randolph Field at San Antonio, Texas. There he met and fell in love with Adeline Kosharek. They were married on July 1, 1940, and spent 27 years in the U.S. Air Force where his career was in aircraft maintenance and engineering.

He was proud to have served his country through three wars: World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. He was stationed throughout the United States, from Orlando, Fla., to Portland, Ore. He also served in the Philippine Islands, Korea and Japan.

He retired to Portland after he helped closed the air base there in 1967. He then attended Oregon State University at Corvallis and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Trade and Industrial Education. He majored in fluid power.

He taught at Benson High School in Portland and built a retirement home at Springdale. He continued to be involved in aircraft maintenance for the rest of his life. He was very proud to have received the prestigious Charles Taylor Master Mechanic award on July 5, 1995, from the Federal Aviation Administration. The award is given for 50 years of dedicated service in aviation maintenance.

In 1981, Jeremiah and Adeline moved to Medical Spring where he ranched and built a second home. Jeremiah loved being outdoors and appreciated nature. In his youth he was an expert swimmer and diver and often entertained at events with his clown diving.

He took his family camping often and to many beautiful places. He was accomplished in many phases of the industrial arts, especially woodworking. And of course, his real love always remained — flying airplanes.

Survivors include his spouse of 61 years, Adeline Miller; his daughter and her husband, Vicki and Paul Wares; his son and wife, Frank and Robyn; and his granddaughters, Kristen and Grace Wares.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the National Kidney Foundation of Oregon through Gray’s West & Co., P.O. Box 726, Baker City, OR 97814.

John Sass

John R. Sass, 89, a longtime Richland resident, died Dec. 7, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Care Center.

There will be a family memorial gathering later. Burial will be at the Richland Cemetery.

John Sass was born on Jan. 19, 1912, at Richland to Henry and Elizabeth Detlefsin Sass. He was a 1929 graduate of Eagle Valley High School at Richland and attended Oregon State University at Corvallis for two years.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945 in the European Theater where he received the Bronze Star. After the war he returned to Richland to farm and ranch with his father.

In 1948, he married Rowena Howell Sass at Baker City. After their marriage, he and Rowena bought his father’s interest in the ranch where they continued to ranch and raise Hereford cattle. John and Rowena had two children: Robyn Ann and Dean.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Elizabeth Sass; his sister, Elizabeth; and his daughter, Robyn.

Survivors include his wife, Rowena of Richland; his son, Dean Sass, and his wife, Sheri; two grandchildren, Jill, and her husband, Ken Dooley, and Ryan Sass, all of Boise; sister-in-law, Catherine Howell of Baker City; sister-in-law, Colleen, and her husband, Bill DeGrofft, of Wallowa; and several nieces.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Richland Ambulance Fund through Gray’s West & Co., P.O. Box 726, Baker City, OR 97814.

Vera Barnhart

Vera W. Glenn Barnhart, 86, of Boise, a former Baker City resident, died Dec. 9, 2001, at a Boise hospital.

Her memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel in Boise. Inurnment will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mount Hope Cemetery in Baker City.

Vera was born on Oct. 31, 1915, at Baker City to Glen and Florence James Willett. She attended elementary schools at Baker City and high school at Meridian, Idaho.

She married James R. Glenn on May 11, 1935, at Boise. They had two children: Jacqueline and Gary. They were married for 35 years. She then married Thomas H. Barnhart on Aug. 9, 1972, at Incline Village, Nev.

Vera was employed for many years by Merle Norman Cosmetics as a cosmetologist and a makeup artist. She enjoyed fishing, was an avid dancer, a world traveler and she loved theater.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church; past noble grand of the Unity Rebekah Lodge, No. 8, International Order of Odd Fellows; past president (1992-1993) Department Association LAPM of Idaho IOOF; past noble grand, Rose Rebekah Lodge, No. 18, IOOF (historical lodge); Eagles Auxiliary; former Elks Ladies Auxiliary at Boise; and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include her daughter, Jacqueline Otteson of Reno, Nev.; her son, Gary Glenn of Kuna, Idaho; 24 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and four stepchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husbands, James R. Glenn and Thomas H. Barnhart.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Odd Fellows and Rebekah’s Educational Foundation, C/O Rebekah Assembly of Idaho, P.O. Box 567, Caldwell, ID 83606-0567.

Wanda Puckett

Wanda Sarah Tripp Richards Puckett, 85, of Union died Dec. 6, 2001, in Portland after a brief illness.

Her funeral was today at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Union. Interment was at 2:30 p.m. today at Mount Hope Cemetery in Baker City.

Mrs. Puckett was born March 4, 1916, to Guy E. Tripp and Sadie Elizabeth Criddle at Downey, Idaho. The family moved to Perry in the 1920s and later to Baker City. She was a 1934 Baker High School graduate.

She married Raymond Richards in October 1935. He died in 1971. She married Ralph Puckett in 1973 and moved to Cove. He died in June 1989.

She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many positions. She was a visiting teacher for more than 50 years.

Her grandmother’s parents were early settlers at St. George, Utah. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and focused her life on her family and friends.

Survivors include a son, John Richards of Lake Oswego; a daughter, Kaye Richards Hanni of Portland; a sister, Darlene McGregor of Livermore, Calif.; eight stepchildren, Wythal Lane, Connie Marks, Zelda Marshall and Ray Puckett of Cove, Gay Zander of La Grande, Doralee “Rosie” Powell, Robert “R.C.” Clarence and James Puckett of Portland; 24 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Esther Long

Esther Heggie Long, 88, a life-long Baker City resident, died Dec. 6, 2001, at Settlers’ Park.

Her graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Bob Harrison of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will conduct.

Esther Heggie Long was born Dec. 15, 1912, at Austin. She was the fourth daughter of six children born to Andrew Smith Heggie and Lavina Dolby Heggie.

She lived her entire life in Baker City and attended Baker schools. She married Garnet A. Long on Jan. 26, 1935, at Baker City.

Esther enjoyed cooking for her family. She was employed by the Baker School District as a cook in the elementary schools, Baker Middle School, and she was one of the first cooks in the new high school in 1951. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include her three sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald Long and Keith and Virginia Long, all of Baker City and Tom and Teresa Long of Hermiston; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1991, and her four sisters and one brother.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pathway Hospice or a charity of one’s choice through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.

Eva Price

Eva Weimer Price, 95, of San Diego, a former Baker City businesswoman, died Dec. 3, 2001.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Dec. 10 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at San Diego.

Mrs. Price was born on April 7, 1906, at Cove, the second child of Jonas and Texy Weimer. She was a homemaker and an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She married John F. Price on July 19, 1928. She and her husband owned the Peerless Cleaners in Baker City for many years.

After selling the plant in Baker City, they moved to Portland and then to Spokane, Wash. After his retirement they moved to San Diego.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, LouAnn and Don Prock; a sister, Alice May Cantrell of Haines; sister-in-law, Faye Weimer of La Grande; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Della Overman, Wilmerth Stark and Verna Baum; and a brother, Stowell Weimer.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to a hospice unit.

George Andrew

George Emmet Andrew, 82, of Baker City died Nov. 2, 2001 in a Boise hospital of complications resulting from a traffic accident Sept. 28 in downtown Baker City.

Disposition was by cremation. His ashes will be dispersed at his favorite locality.

Mr. Andrew was born in Portland on Sept. 2, 1919. He graduated from Kelso High School in 1938. He worked at The Long Bell Lumber Co. in Longview, Wash., from 1940 until he enlisted in the Army Signal Corps after Pearl Harbor and attained the rank of sergeant. After World War II service he returned to work for Long Bell and later was self-employed in the timber industry. He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, walking, biking, cutting wood, remodeling and other similar activities.

At one time he owned Whites Sweet Shop at Castle Rock, Wash. He was a longtime member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and he loved the church and his many friends.

Survivors include his wife Judy of Baker City; a son, Sam C. Andrew of Farmington, N.M.; daughters, Denise L. Rowe of Farmington, N.M., Ellen R. Owens, of St. George, Utah, and Dannella J. Scully of Farmington, N.M; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; a brother, Glenn N. Andrew of Castle Rock, Wash.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Andrew Alexander Fisher.

Martha Boyer

Martha Grace Boyer, 80, a former Baker County resident, died Nov. 5, 2001, at Good Shepard Hospital at Hermiston.

Her funeral was Nov. 9 at Driskill Memorial Chapel at John Day. Interment was at the Prairie City Cemetery.

Mrs. Boyer was born on July 20, 1921, at Youngstown, Ohio, to Alexander and Catherine Bubelenyi Racey. As a youngster, she rode five miles to school on horseback and drove cattle on foot.

She attended grade school at Malheur City and completed high school in three years at Hereford.

She married Paul Boyer on Sept. 9, 1939, at Hereford. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, reading, hunting, rock hounding and gardening.

Survivors include her son, Richard Boyer of Irrigon; two daughters, Pauline Ordyno of Pendleton and Leslie Tuttle of Woodside, Calif; her sister, Helen Liddiard of Boise; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, an infant sister and an infant granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.
