Suzanne McCulley

Suzanne L. Jenkins McCulley, 93, of Baker City died Feb. 14, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center.

At her request, there will be no service. Her family will scatter her ashes in her beloved Eagle Mountains later.

Suzanne was born on Nov. 8, 1908, the 15th child of George W. and Lillian Shea Jenkins. She grew up on a farm in Baker County and attended Baker schools.

She married F. Ward McCulley in 1928. They lived in many towns in Oregon throughout their married life. Suzanne graduated from Eastern Oregon Normal School (now Eastern Oregon University) in La Grande in 1931 and taught in Baker County schools, including Wingville-Muddy Creek. She also taught at Granite.

After World War II the McCulleys obtained a potato farm at Tulelake, Calif., where Ward raised potatoes and Suzanne worked at the post office. Upon “retirement” from Tulelake, they had what they termed “the best three years of their lives” as they toured in their fifth-wheeler.

They traveled the United States, Canada and Mexico enjoying the back roads where they said they met real people and enjoyed the wildlife and natural artifacts. Suzanne loved all kinds of animals and she could identify almost any plant or flower in the forest.

Ward and Suzanne did not have children of their own, but they paid special attention to great-nieces, Kay Marie Duncan, and Jan Lillard Long, and a great-nephew, David Rudisill.

Suzanne was very devoted to her church, the First Church of the Nazarene. She also was a member of the Baker City Garden Club, the St. Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary and for several years she was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors living in this area include a great-nephew and his wife, Gene and Claire Duncan of Baker City; great-nieces, Sister Kay Marie Duncan of Baker City and Emmy Bellows and her husband, Duane, of Ontario; there are many other great-nieces and great-nephews as well as Ward’s nephew and wife, John “Jack” and Pat Gertzen of Eugene and a niece and her husband, Virginia and Mike O’Connor of Phoenix, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ward; and 14 brothers and sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Northeast Oregon Compassion Center, the National Humane Education Society or to the National Wildlife Federation through Gray’s West Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR 97814.

‘Lank’ Hickman

Daniel “Lank” Hickman 94, a longtime Baker City resident, died Feb. 15, 2002, at his home.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Pastor Lennie Spooner of the Church of the Nazarene will officiate. Private interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitations will be until 7 o’clock tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Hickman was born on Jan. 30, 1908, at Exeter, Barry County, Mo., to William and Elizabeth Metcalf Hickman. He married Bessie Lee of Washburn, Mo., on Dec. 21, 1927. He and his wife moved to Oregon in 1940 and had lived on 19th Street in Baker City for 25 years. Mr. Hickman loved hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie Hickman of Baker City; numerous nieces and nephews, many friends, some special nieces and nephews and many good neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son and daughter, two brothers and two sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice through the Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.

Robert Lewis

Robert Lewis, 74, a longtime Baker City resident, died Feb. 7, 2002, at Evergreen Vista Health Center at La Grande.

There was a private family memorial service on Feb. 11 at Gray’s West & Co. The Rev. Rob Irwin of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral officiated. There will be a memorial service in Portland later.

Bob was born on Dec. 1, 1927, at Portland to Walter and Verna Lewis. After graduating from Portland High School in 1946, he joined the U.S. Navy. He served in the occupation forces at Tokyo for two years.

Bob returned home and married Frankie C. Kelley at Stevenson, Wash., on May 31, 1948. He worked as a lab analyst for Portland Gas Co.

In 1958, he was accepted as a state police officer and worked for the department for about 10 years. He retired in 1984 as an investigator for Scott Wetzel, a risk management company. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing and many camping trips with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Frankie; sons and their spouses, Kurt and Connie Lewis of Baker City, and Michael and Linda Lewis of Haverhill, Mass.; a daughter, Peggy Colice Lewis of Baker City; a sister, Linda Williams of Ontario; grandchildren, Dyana Lewis of Welches, Katelyn and Monica Lewis of Haverhill, Mass., Ben Kammerer of Baker City and Jason Lewis of Gresham; a great-granddaughter, Zetta Lewis; nieces, Bobby Jo May of Ontario and Crissy Caswell of Newberg; a great-nephew, Jacob May of Ontario; and great-niece, Jessica Caswell of Newberg; and cousins, Fran Parrot of Portland and Louise Newdahl of Gold Beach.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association through Gray’s West & Co., P.O. Box 726, Baker City, OR 97814.

Beth Clark

Beth Porter Clark, 86, of Halfway died Feb. 14, 2002, at Halfway after a long illness.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Pine Valley Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Bill Shields will officiate. Vault interment will be at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery in Anchorage, Alaska.

Mrs. Clark was born on Dec. 11, 1915, at Burton, Idaho, to Milburn Wyatt Porter and Blanche Middleton Porter. She married Don H. Clark on July 3, 1935, at Jackson Hole, Wyo., and moved to Anchorage in 1950. Mrs. Clark worked as a seamstress for Alaska Cleaners and Northern Commercial Co. in the early years and later was a bookkeeper for her husband’s construction company.

Beth enjoyed entertaining friends and they often referred to her home as “Beth’s Boarding House.” She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and loved gardening, sewing and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. In 1992, she moved to Halfway to be closer to her daughter.

Survivors include her two brothers, Jack Porter of Soda Springs, Idaho, and Ross Porter of Portland; a sister, Patti Haslett of Portland; a son, D. Craig Clark of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter, Judi Haney of Halfway; five grandchildren, Kelly Brennan and Brian Miller of Halibut Cove, Alaska, Shelly Eldred of Eagle River, Alaska, Tammy Mele of Merritt Island, Fla., and Todd Clark of Anchorage, Alaska; and six great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Don, and grandson, Mark Brennan, both died in 1982. Two brothers and one sister also preceded her in death.

Juliane Danilovich

Juliane Danilovich, 83, of Union and formerly of La Grande, died Feb. 9, 2002, at her daughter’s home after a battle with cancer.

There will be a Celebration of Life service at 4 p.m. Friday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., in La Grande. The Rev. Doug Hale will officiate. There will be a potluck afterward at the chapel.

Mrs. Danilovich was born on Oct. 10, 1919, at Vienna, Austria, to Joseph and Maria Krula Panek. She met and married William Gschwandtner at Radstadt, Austria, where she worked in a bookstore. They had one daughter, Gertraud Gschwandtner. William was killed during World War II when his transport was destroyed returning to the Russian front.

Juliane worked for five years in Salzburg as a medical transcriptionist in the morgue of a hospital. During this time, she married Dragoslav Danilovich and they immigrated to the United States in 1950. They settled in the suburbs of Chicago, where they both were employed by the U.S. Postal Service.

Juliane spoke German, French, Yugoslav and English. She was an accomplished skier and mountain climber.

She moved to La Grande to be near her daughter in 1980, shortly after her husband’s death. During her retirement she enjoyed fishing, gardening, westerns, crossword puzzles, symphony music, books, family and good food.

Survivors include her daughter, Erika Danilovich of Union; grandchildren, Krystal and Amber Giambitti and Shawnna and Tony Danilovich. She lived with her one great-granddaughter, Selena Giambitti. She possibly is survived by Gertraude Gschwandtner of Austria, who the family has been trying to locate. Other relatives include her daughter, Brigitte Margiotta of La Grande and granddaughters, Lisa and Julie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Karl and Franzie; and a sister, Josephine.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions to the Union Public Library through the Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., La Grande, OR 97850.

Trudy Capon

Trudy Jane Capon, 55, a longtime Monument resident, died Feb. 14, 2002, of cancer at her home near Monument.

Her memorial service will be at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Monument Bible Church at Monument.

Trudy was born on July 11, 1946, at Baker City to Raymond and Georgia Pugh Andersen. She was raised at Pendleton and graduated from high school there. She attended a business college in Portland.

She married Don Capon at Monument on April 7, 1973. She was part-owner of the family ranch near Monument in addition to caring for her husband, four sons and faithfully attending her church at Monument. She had attended church faithfully since the age of 7.

She was baptized in the Community Presbyterian Church at Monument, which is now the Monument Bible Church and is under the mantle of The Mission Church denomination. Trudy was very kind to people and never wanted to be the center of attention, but only wanted to care for others. Her family and friends dearly loved her and she them.

Survivors include her husband, Don, of Monument; four sons, Ryan Capon, and his wife, Marla, and Reid and Ray Capon, all of Monument, and Ross Capon and his wife, Julie, of Baker City; three granddaughters, Haley Jane, Faith and McKala; a sister, Kathy McCormmach of Vancouver, Wash.; a brother and his wife, Terry and Pam Andersen of Pendleton; an uncle, Jack Andersen of Eugene; an aunt, Mae Larsen of Eugene; and one niece and one nephew, Katlyn and Dane Andersen, both of Pendleton.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Arrangements are under the direction of Autumn Funerals of Redmond.

‘Dan’ Taylor

Roy Daniel “Dan” Taylor, 55, of Baker City died Feb. 13, 2002, at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise.

There will be a memorial service later. Disposition was by cremation at Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Crematory.

Mr. Taylor was born on Dec. 17, 1945, at Murfreesboro, Tenn., to Roy I. and Ruby B. Haley Taylor. After he retired from the military, he worked for law enforcement for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his sister, Carol Kish and her husband, Joe; a brother, Joe Beasley and his wife, Jean; nephews, Scott Kish, and his wife, Cristy, and Terry Beasley and his wife, Cindy; and a niece, Angela Potts, and her husband, Bryan.

‘Wally’ Hardman

Wallace Emery “Wally” Hardman, 81, a lifetime Baker City resident, died Feb. 15, 2002, at his home.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. The Rev. Lura Kidner-Miesen of the United Methodist Church and the Rev. Raymond Bates of SonRise Free Methodist Church at La Grande will officiate. Vault interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by the Baker City Veterans of Foreign Wars. There will be a reception afterward at the United Methodist Church, 1919 Second St.

Visitations will be from 5 o’clock to 7 o’clock tonight at Gray’s West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave.

Wally was born Jan. 15, 1921, at Baker City to Oliver Monroe Hardman and Elsie Tureman Hardman. He spent his life in the Baker and Burnt River valleys, except for the time he spent in the Air Force defending our country during World War II.

Wally grew up in Union on his parents’ ranch, later moving to the Muddy Creek area where he graduated from high school in 1939. His greatest interests were sports and ranching. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1940 and served in Alaska, flying missions during the Aleutian Campaign.

He married Betty Marie Emele on March 18, 1943. While still in the Air Force, he lived at Columbia, S.C.

Returning to Baker City, Wally worked for Pacific Northwest Bell and was known as the “John Day Kid” as he traveled to and from that area as a lineman. He always had a great love of animals and the outdoors.

In 1952, Wally and Betty moved their family to Unity where they worked a cattle ranch for a number of years. Wally was active with 4-H youth activities, church and and school activities with their two children. After nine years at Unity, they purchased a ranch just south of Baker City where they raised cattle and hay.

After several years, they purchased a partnership/franchise from Blitz Weinhard Inc. and for a number of years operated Hardman Distributing of Baker. Upon selling the distributorship, they returned to ranching at the foot of the Elkhorn Mountains. Wally also worked as a ranch hand for Floyd Duncan and Bob Thomas angus ranches. He had a great affection for his horses, Billy, Hope, Pepper and Cherokee. His favorite dogs were Topper, Nikki, Spunky and Sweet Shot.

Wally was a lifelong member of the Baker Elks Lodge, No. 338, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3048. Wally was very proud to be one of the original firemen of the first Baker Rural Fire District of Pine Creek Station. He also was a member of the Methodist churches of Haines and Baker City.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Betty. They spent their days camping, fishing and enjoying friends and family members. He was a loving and caring father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be remembered for his humor, love and compassion. He was very close to his family and was very proud of them.

He also is survived by his son, W. David Hardman, and his wife, Paula, of Lynden, Wash.; his daughter, Roxy G. Hardman Ulrey and her husband, Don, of Baker City; six grandchildren, Jennifer and Benjamin of Bellingham and Lynden, Wash., Bradley, Jake and Justin of Salem, and Julee, who attends Eastern Oregon University at La Grande; five great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Kavika, Tanner, Megan and Mckennah, all of Salem; a sister, Catherine Howell of Baker City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Elsie; his brother, Ernest; and his sisters, Louise, Ruby and Marjorie.

‘Ed’ Chadwick

Edward T. “Ed” Chadwick, 83, of Baker City died Feb. 13, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

His graveside funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Hope Cemetery. The Rev. Susan Barnes of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Visitations will be until 8 o’clock tonight at Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. There will be a reception afterward at the Presbyterian Church, 1995 Fourth St.

Ed was born on Feb. 14, 1918, at Pittsburgh. He married Alene Schuck on Sept. 3, 1938, at Baker City. They had two children, Carolyn and Thomas. These children gave them five grandsons, six great-grandsons and five great-granddaughters.

Ed was raised and educated in Baker City and spent most of his life here. He was a salesman and spent part of his working life selling Chevrolets and the rest selling hardware. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and had a real love of the mountains. That is his legacy to his family.

Survivors also include a sister, Helen Hoffman of Seattle, Wash., and his dear friend, Genevieve Elliott of Baker City.

He was preceded in death by his his wife, Alene Chadwick; and his brother, Bud Chadwick.

‘Kay’ Ringer

Marilyn “Kay” Ringer, 58, of The Dalles, a former Baker City resident, died Feb. 15, 2002, at Mid-Columbia Medical Center.

Her funeral was today at The Dalles Zion Lutheran Church. Private cremation was at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory. Inurnment was at The Dalles Odd Fellows Memorial Mausoleum.

Kay was born on Aug. 3, 1943, at Moscow, Idaho, to Sherman Duane “Bud” and Ellen Josephine Olsen Town. She grew up at Moscow and Baker City and was a 1961 Baker High School graduate. She attended the University of Oregon at Eugene for a year before transferring to Eastern Oregon College (now Eastern Oregon University) at La Grande.

She married Robert Allen Ringer on June 23, 1962, and they attended Eastern Oregon until Bob transferred to Blue Mountain Community College at Pendleton in 1963.

Kay worked at the Oregon Bank and after Bob’s graduation, he started with the First National Bank. They moved to The Dalles in 1975. She became a full-time homemaker and then in 1977, she and Bob started Ringer’s Texaco, with Kay as a partner and bookkeeper.

In 1987, she returned to Eastern and graduated in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in education and a minor in bilingual education. In 1990, she started teaching at Colonel Wright Grade School and was teaching second grade at the time of her death.

Kay was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational, the teachers association and was actively involved in the New Baldridge Education Reform Program. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, her family and grandchildren and her teaching.

Survivors include her husband, Robert A. “Bob” Ringer; her sons and their wives, Jeffrey and Roxanne Ringer and Jai and Kristen Ringer, all of The Dalles; grandchildren, Kayla of Fallon, Nev., and Jacob, Avery, Clayton and Autumn, all of The Dalles; her father and his wife, Sherman “Bud” and Ellen Town of Vale; her siblings, Sandy Lytle of Moscow, Idaho, Doug Town of Beaverton, Kathy Blackburn of Boise, Duane Town of Eagle, Idaho, and Betty Duncan of Unity; and numerous nieces, nephews and one great-niece.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ellen Josephine.
