Mary Dolby

Mary Caroline Dolby, 91, of Baker City, died Nov. 21, 2004, at Ashley Manor.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon at the Baker Elks Lodge, 1896 Second St. after the committal service.

Visitations will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Gray's West & Co.

Mary Caroline Colton Dolby was born on Feb. 26, 1913, in upper Keating Valley in the big Colton house beside the Powder River. Her parents were John and Nora Gilkison Colton. She was the second child and first girl born in a family of 15. She had seven brothers and seven sisters.

Mary attended grade school at the Washington schoolhouse above the Colton ranch (the Medical Springs Grange Hall in later years.) She stayed in Baker City at her grandparents' home on Spring Garden Avenue, finishing school at St. Francis Academy. She graduated in 1931.

She married James Ford Dolby on Nov. 24, 1934. They lived most of their lives in upper Keating Valley. Mary drove the Keating School bus for 10 years and was janitor at the same time.

She embroidered, tatted, crocheted, and sewed beautiful clothes. Her daughters wore pinafores and homemade clothes even through high school and enjoyed them so much. She raised a garden and always had a pretty yard and flowers. She canned lots of food over the years and cooked wonderful meals.

She enjoyed belonging to the Medical Springs Extension Club and was an honorary member of the Baker County CattleWomen.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Lonna Dolby of Baker City; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lou and Bucky Wirth of Medical Springs, and Betty Jean and George Dwyer of Medford; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, John and Janice Wirth and Jim and Lori Wirth, all of Medical Springs, Vickie and Cal Foster of Baker Valley, Brian Dolby and Craig and Shelia Dolby of Baker City, Tami Randall of Portland, Neil and Karen Tally of Phoenix, Ore., Debbie and Cliff Knotts and Patti and Bill Huss of Vancouver, Wash., and Bill Dwyer of Medford; 26 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; brothers John Colton and Don Colton and his wife, Ann, of Baker City; sisters, June Premovich and her husband, George, of Wenatchee, Wash., Nell Owen of Baker City, Jean Thompson and her husband, Elmer, of Mount Vernon, LaRue Brooks and her husband, Stan, of Richland, Joyce Turner and her husband, Jim, of Elgin, and Gail Stevenson and her husband, Chuck, of Kent, Wash.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Nora Colton; her husband of 56 years, Ford Dolby; baby daughter, Dorothy May; one sister, Madge Lloyd; and five brothers, Frank, Hugh, Phil, Bill, and Blaine Colton.

Alvin Tarter

Alvin Hansford Tarter, 96, a former Pine Valley resident, died at his home in Medford on Nov. 17, 2004.

His graveside service was today at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway.

Alvin Hansford Tarter was born on Oct. 26, 1908, at Baker City to Frank and Laura Daley. Alvin was raised by Hansford and Myrtle Tarter. He spent his first few years at Copperfield, then later moved to Carson where he was raised and went to school.

Alvin married Edith Robertson in June of 1926 at Baker City. They lived at Carson and had two children, Alvin Dale and Galen Robertson. Alvin and his wife bought the ranch from his father and made their home on the 60 acres.

Alvin drove freight wagon, ranched and farmed his property for many years, and operated a sawmill on his lower property. After the death of his wife, Edith, Alvin moved to Medford to be close to his son, Galen, and his family.

Alvin worked for the Rogue River National Forest Service on the road crew in Medford until his retirement in 1975. He enjoyed visiting his son, Dale, and his family at Scappoose and making frequent trips to his ranch in Carson. Alvin loved being in the outdoors, wildlife, his garden and his grandchildren.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edith; and eldest son, Dale.

Survivors include his son, Galen Robertson Tarter, and his wife, Marian, of Medford; six grandchildren, Gary Tarter of Portland, Paul Tarter of Richland, Rod Tarter of Halfway, Gaylen Dennis Tarter of Medford, James Alvin Tarter of Sacramento, Calif., and Gale Tarter Smith of North Bend; 12 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions from friends or family will be donated to the Assisted Living Home, Granite Peaks, under development at Halfway. Contributions may be made through Tami's Pine Valley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 543, Halfway, OR 97834.

‘Vern' Jacobson

Vernon Z. "Vern" Jacobson, 85, a retired Baker City manager, died Nov. 18, 2004, at Baker City.

His memorial service was Saturday at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Pastor Susan Barnes of the First Presbyterian Church officiated.

A graveside inurnment will be in the spring at the Prairie City Cemetery.

Vern was born on June 16, 1919, at Alder, Wash., to Arnt and Elizabeth Jacobson. He spent his young life in Washington before serving in the U.S. Army as a captain in the 2nd Armored Division during World War II.

Vern graduated from the University of Washington at Seattle with degrees in engineering and mineralogy. He spent his professional life as a mining and civil engineer. He was employed by the City of Baker City as city engineer and city manager until his retirement.

The family expressed appreciation to Pat and Roy Valentine for their kindness and care of Vern this past year.

Survivors include his son, Gary Jacobson of Tulelake, Calif.; daughters and their spouses, Pat and John Baglien of Weiser, Idaho, and Carol and Steven Tanaka of Seattle; sister, Norma Norris of Kingston, Wash.; and his pride and joys, grandchildren Nicole Rodman Bourland, Logan Jacobson, Jacob Baglien, Rebecca Baglien, Krysta Baglien, Kelsey Tanaka, and Lindsey Tanaka; and great-grandchildren, Ryan Bourland and Tara Bourland.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Lela Anne French Jacobson; his brother, Jay Jacobson; and daughter-in-law, Carol Jacobson.

Ila Phillips

Ila Marie Phillips, 71, of Prineville, a former Baker City resident, died Nov. 19, 2004, at her home.

Her memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the upstairs room at the Veterans Club in Prineville.

Mrs. Phillips was born on Jan. 8, 1933, at West Plains, Mo., to Claude and Ila Stephenson. Soon after her birth, the family moved to Prineville where she spent most of her life.

Along the way she met the love of her life, Allen Phillips. They were married at Reno, Nev., and together they raised a family. They lived in Baker City for a time.

Ila was known for her great skill in the kitchen, and also was known for her ability to iron clothing, which she did for many people. She also is remembered for her enjoyment of doing crossword puzzles and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be missed by many.

Survivors include her husband, Allen of Prineville; daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Ernie Slavey of Prineville; son and daughter-in-law, Jessie and Kathy Fuller of Prineville; daughter, Becky Stewart, and her companion, Kent Brandon of Prineville; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Amy Phillips of Spokane, Wash.; and daughter, Barbara Phillips of Denver; her brother, Guy Stephenson of Cottage Grove; sisters, Mabel Barnes of Prineville and Fern Finwick of Kingman, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. The Prineville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Dunn

Robert Delaine Dunn, 47, of Amity, a former Baker City resident, died Nov. 4, 2004.

There will be a memorial service in the spring. Macy's Funeral Home at McMinnville is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dunn was born on Jan. 6, 1957, to Delaine and Bonnie Byrne Dunn at Baker City. He graduated from Grant Union High School in 1975 and served in the U.S. Army for 10 years. He lived in various places in Eastern Oregon, including La Grande, before moving to Amity in 1998. He worked as an auto mechanic and enjoyed cars, music and being with his family. He left a piece of himself with everyone he met. He will be remembered for his kindness.

Survivors include his companion, Rhonda Armour of Amity; her daughters, Madelline, Candice and Shauna Armour; his children, Athena Street-Morris of Evanston, Wyo., Olivia Dunn of Ladd, Ill., Brenda Dunn of Portland and Kevin Dunn of Redmond; six grandchildren; his parents of La Grande; siblings, Debi Shervey of Hermiston and Chris Dunn of La Grande; and other relatives.

Wanden Ashby

Wanden Lloyd Ashby, 77, of Richland, died Nov. 10, 2004, at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise of complications from heart surgery.

His graveside service will be at noon Saturday at Eagle Valley Cemetery in Richland. Pastor Ralph Holcomb of the Baker Christian Church will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 7847, Halfway.

Wanden was his own man. He served his country during World War II, after joining the U.S. Navy at age 16 with his dad's OK. He received two Purple Hearts, one in the Battle of the Philippine Sea and one at Okinawa. After the war he sailed with the Merchant Marines for about nine years.

After serving his country, Wanden moved to Omak, Wash. He later moved to Keller, Wash., where he was married and bought a ranch. Later he bought another ranch in Moses Lake, Wash. He and his wife were divorced and he sold his property.

Wanden acquired some racehorses and raced them at Portland, Yakima, Spokane and Seattle, Wash. He sold his horses after a few years and bought a house at Richland.

Wanden and his very good friend, Glenn Densley, prospected and mined. In his later years he had a small sawmill and started making wooden bowls. He never sold any, but gave them to friends and relatives.

In addition to mining, he loved fly-fishing and hunting.

The family expressed appreciation to Wanden's many good friends, especially Art Conklin, who ran him back and forth to Boise; Jim Harrison and his wife, Dorothy, who took care of his dog, Molly; and John and Dorothy Randall and son, Rocky.

Survivors include his daughter, Cheryl Johnson, and her husband, Bill, of Lewiston, Idaho; grandchildren, Bren, Suzanne and Steven Johnson also of Lewiston, Idaho; brothers, Vaden Ashby, and his wife, Fern, of Enumclaw, Wash., and Wilbur Ashby and his wife, Carol, of John Day; nephews, Dagan Ashby of Puyallup, Wash., Dennis Ashby of Moses Lake, Wash., and Kevin Ashby and Blaiden Ashby, both of John Day; nieces, Trace Andrew and Adele Wilson, also of John Day.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Eagle Valley Cemetery through Gray's West & Co., P.O. Box 726, Baker City, OR 97814.

‘Bill' Reichenbach

William Kirby "Bill" Reichenbach, 42, of North Bend, a former Baker City resident, died Nov. 9, 2004, at Coos Bay.

There will be a private memorial service. Cremation was by Ocean View Memory Gardens Crematory at Coos Bay.

Bill was born on May 16, 1962, in California to Arthur and Pamela Etter Reichenbach. He spent most of his childhood in the Applegate Valley were he was "an accident waiting to happen" because he was always adventurous and prone to now-comical injuries. He was a 1980 Ashland High School graduate.

In his life he had many adventures. They led him to Baker City where he became known as "Chef Bill" at the Geiser Grand Hotel. He was a kind and loving person who was always willing to help.

He spent the last two years caring for his mother, Pam, and stepfather, Dennis, at North Bend. He loved fishing, golfing, cooking and four-wheeling. He was a rabid fan of the San Francisco 49ers, loved Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series, was a primo "dream flyer" and had a wonderfully unique, warped sense of humor that kept his family and friends laughing. They will cherish his memory always.

Survivors include his father, Art Reichenbach and his wife, Barb, of LaHabra, Calif.; his mother, Pamela Gandt, and her husband, Dennis, of North Bend; brother, Al Reichenbach and his wife, Deann, of Yreka, Calif.; sisters, Carolyn George and her husband, Phillip, of Spokane, Wash., and Ariel Pavlak and her husband, John, of Eugene; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. The North Bend Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn Durr

Carolyn Durr, 70, died Nov. 5, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital in Boise.

Her graveside service was at 1 p.m. today at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway. Friends were invited to join the family for a reception at the Lions Hall afterward.

Carolyn Durr was born to Aubrey and Thelma Bonitz at Oklahoma City, Okla., on June 14, 1934. Her family later moved to Albany where she graduated from Albany High School. It was in high school that she met David Durr.

They were married in 1954 while he was serving in the U.S. Marines. They spent the first year and a half of their marriage at Albany. From Albany they moved to Corvallis and in 1972 they moved to Halfway with their five children.

Carolyn was an exceptional mother and grandmother, an avid gardener and an important member of her church, all while managing the family businesses.

She was the favored destination for 10 grandchildren whom she wrapped with love and wool hats. Most importantly, Carolyn was a strong Christian and she has heard the words "Well done, good and faithful servant, " her family said.

She was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Heather Durr, who died in 1988.

Survivors include her husband, David; daughters, Kim Durr of Mountain Home, Idaho, Karen Hearne of Halfway and Fawn Robertson of Baker City; her son, Shawn Durr of Halfway; a sister, Linda Bowen of Hillsboro; and a brother, Joe Bonitz of Albany.

Memorial contributions may be made to Focus On The Family through Tami's Funeral Home, P.O. Box 543, Halfway, OR 97834.

Berniece Schock

Berniece Schock, 71, of Hermiston, died Nov. 10, 2004, at the Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston.

Her graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Eternal Hills Cemetery in Klamath Falls.

She was born on Oct. 11, 1933, at Baker City to Clifford and Cecelia Bowman Parker. She married Harold H. Schock on May 23, 1952, at Payette, Idaho.

The couple lived at Pondosa and later in the Baker City area for more than 30 years. They moved to Ashland in 1990. Harold died in 1992.

Berniece returned to Baker City in 1994 and lived here until moving to the Hermiston area in 1999. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed doing embroidery work, crocheting, fishing, hunting, flowers, gardening and playing pinochle.

Survivors include her sons, Robert Schock and his wife, Kathy, of Klamath Falls, Vernon Schock of Milton-Freewater, Myron Schock of John Day, and Avery Schock and his wife, Nan, of Irrigon; two brothers, Jasper Parker of Portland and Stanley Parker of Wasco; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; and a sister, Ruby Farley.

The Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Anderson

Evelyn Ruth Anderson, 80, of Baker City, who pioneered the 4-H horse program, died Nov. 10, 2004, at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise.

Her memorial service was Friday at the Cornerstone Baptist Church in North Powder.

She was born on Sept. 15, 1924, at San Francisco. She enjoyed many careers in her lifetime, some of which included working as a computer operator, phone system administrator, elementary school secretary and nurses assistant. But the true love of her life was horses.

She successfully lobbied to have horses accepted as a legitimate 4-H project in the 1950s. She had one of the first all-horse 4-H clubs in the United States, and organized trail rides, playdays and fairs. She loved each child and teen who came her way.

She also never missed a single basketball game for the fours years that some of the 4-H kids played on the Selah High School team in the late '50s and early '60s. She was affectionately known as "coach."

She was an avid gardener and made every house in which she lived a home. She was always up for an adventure, such as being a part of the Medford Oregon Sheriff's Posse, and she was part of the search and rescue team.

In 1976, Evelyn was one of the walkers in the Centennial re-enactment of the Oregon Trail covered-wagon trip which took two weeks and ended in Ashland. She was a hard worker, she loved kids and she touched many people's lives with her lively conversation, free advice and positive attitude. She will be greatly missed.

Her family expressed appreciation to the nurses and staff in the Critical Intensive Care Unit and Critical Care Unit of St. Alphonsus Hospital and especially to Dr. Kevin Clifford.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, James R. Anderson; daughters, Carolyn Flynn of Haines and Lynda and her husband, Jim Rider, of Gig Harbor, Wash.; a sister, June Martin of Medford; grandchildren, Melody and her husband, Michael Hanna, of Medford, Randy and his wife, Lisa Reed, of Pasadena, Calif., Lisa and her husband, Mike Smith, of Liberty, S.C., Marlene Chapple and her fiance, Mo, of Pendleton, Monette and her husband, Clint, of Haines, Lloyd Rider and his fiance, Vicki, of Port Orchard, Wash., Tom Reynolds of Chicago, Anna and her husband, Bob, of Chicago, and Jon and his wife, Jennifer, of Silver City, N.M.; and 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Baker City Senior Center, where Evelyn thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship and the food.
