Carrie Shropshire

Carrie Mae Gatson Shropshire, 78, a former Baker City resident, died Nov. 27, 2002, at Tualatin.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary in Portland. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Shropshire was born on Oct. 14, 1924, at Claremore, Okla. She married Ben Shropshire in 1983. He died on July 17, 1998.

She was a devoted wife and mother, Brownie Girl Scout leader and an active member of the Beaverton Church of Christ.

She had been a Portland-area resident for the past nine years and had previously lived at Baker City and John Day. She loved cooking, fishing and being a grandmother.

Survivors include three daughters, Sharron Black, Paula Turner and Caron Thomas; two sons, James H. Shropshire and Ben M. Shropshire; a sister, Dorothy Davis; a brother, Charles "Hershel" Patton; 11 grandchildren and six stepgrandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild; and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

Cora Dooly

Cora Jane Dooly, 88, of Clatskanie, a former longtime Baker City resident, died Dec. 1, 2002, at Community Home & Hospice at Longview, Wash.

There will be a celebration of her life at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Westport Community Church at Westport. The Rev. Tim Teele will officiate.

Mrs. Dooly was born on Aug. 8, 1914, at Clarkston, Idaho, and was a 1932 graduate of Clarkston High School.

She and James Warren Dooly were married on Oct. 6, 1936, at Moscow, Idaho. He died in 1988.

The couple had moved to Baker City in 1949. Mrs. Dooly lived here until 1999 when she moved to Clatskanie to be closer to her family.

She and her husband enjoyed snowmobiling for many years. She enjoyed working with him at Cook's Radiator Shop. She delighted in supporting her daughters' PTA and school activities and was an avid Baker Bulldog basketball fan.

She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Baker City and also a member of the Harmony Circle of the First Methodist Church. Since living at Clatskanie she attended the Westport Community Church.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Donna and Gerald Carver of Clatskanie and Judy and Milt Stromer of North Platte, Neb.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Linda and Steve Burleson of Salem, Jim and Gayle Carver of Clatskanie, Sandy and John Stetler of Longview, Wash., and Dalaina and Russell Salamun of Rapid City, S.D.; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Haakinson-Groulx Mortuary of Clatskanie is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Grant

Evelyn Witham Grant, 90, a former Baker City resident, died Oct. 8, 2002, at Clackamas.

The rosary was said and there was a memorial service Oct. 15 at Zeller Chapel of the Roses. The Rev. Patrick Donoghue was the celebrant. Interment was in the Willamette National Cemetery.

Mrs. Grant was born on Nov. 26, 1911, at Baker City to William E. and Maud M. Witham. She was a 1929 Baker High School graduate. She worked at J.C. Penney.

She married W. C. Grant on June 17, 1941. She worked for the war industries during World War II.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary; a son, Jim; and two brothers, Thomas H. and Harvey E.Witham, both of Baker City.

‘Toby' Koeff

Benjamin Allen "Toby" Koeff, 32, of Baker City died Nov. 22, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

Friends and family may call at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., on Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

The Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, First and Church streets. The Rev. Robert C. Irwin will celebrate the Mass. There will be a reception afterward in the parish hall.

The parents, Keith and Sharon Koeff, were blessed with Benjamin on Christmas Day 1969. He attended schools at Mason City, Iowa, and graduated in 1989 from Denver High School at Denver, Iowa.

He earned his welding degree from Hawkeye Tech at Waterloo, Iowa, and then proceeded to work for Unverferth Manufacturing at Shell Rock, Iowa. His family moved to Oregon in 1992. In 1996, he moved to Oregon to join them.

Benjamin had worked for a short time with Step Forward and for a lawn service until he was hired by Unverferth Manufacturing at North Powder as a warehouseman and truckdriver. He lived at North Powder for a short time before moving to Baker City.

Benjamin, who was also nicknamed ‘Toby, ' enjoyed fishing, especially with his dad, wrestling and music, but his big interest was stock car racing and the NASCAR racing. His family was his life.

Benjamin was sweet and caring and loved children. He was known as "Gentle Ben" to many. Even though he was big in size, his heart was gentle as a lamb. He was a devoted brother to his younger sister, always looking out for her. He was a simple guy, who enjoyed the simple and small things in life and loved God. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church at North Powder. He will be so missed.

Survivors are his parents, Keith and Sharon Koeff, and his sister, Sheri Koeff, all of Baker City, Oregon; his loving aunts and uncles all from Iowa, Jim and Peg Kane, Ray and Pam Kane, Terry and Jean Lowman, Laura Koeff and Roger and Donna Kittle; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Herschel and Marie Kane of Dunkerton, Iowa, and Gus and Claribel Koeff, of Waverly, Iowa, and his uncle, Delvin Koeff, of Nashua, Iowa.

Nona LaVon Burlew

Nona LaVon Burlew, 81, a Baker City resident, died Nov. 22, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

Her funeral was today at First Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Hickman of First Lutheran Church officiated.

Nona was born to John William Christy and Pearl Lillian Colson Christy on June 27, 1921. She was the oldest of five children.

Nona was a homemaker, loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was exceptionally caring and giving. She loved her family and friends very much. She was proud of her Pioneer Valley heritage, as her great-grandfather was one of the first settlers of the Baker Valley in 1862. She loved the outdoors, huckleberry picking, and sewing. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband, John Burlew; her daughters, Patrina Burlew of Baker City and Marie Jones of Emmett, Idaho; granddaughter, Christy Smith and her husband, Brian, of Nampa, Idaho; children, Kassondra, Matthew, Colton and Darren Smith; brothers, Donald Christy and his wife, Betty, of Baker City and Gerald Christy, and his wife, Joanne, of Meridian, Idaho; sister, Teresa McCabe of Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nona was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Wallace Christy.

Elver Needles

Elver D. Needles, 94, of Baker City, died Nov. 25, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

Graveside services will be held Friday at noon at Mount Hope Cemetery. Pastor Lura Kidner-Miesen of Baker City United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will follow at the cemetery.

Visitations will be Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Gray's West & Company Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave.

Elver was born July 19, 1908, to Dennis and Leona (Hooker) Needles in Boise. He worked as a night foreman at the Ellingson Sawmill for 23 years.

Elver is survived by his wife, Nellie, of Baker City; a brother, Charles, of Eagle, Idaho; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nikkie Wiley

Nikkie Darlene Wiley, 59, of Ontario, died Nov. 24, 2002, in a Boise hospital.

Remembrance services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Ontario Lienkaemper Chapel with the Rev. W. Raymond Jarboe presiding. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date. A reception will following the services at the Ontario Elks Lodge, 20 SW Third St.

Visitations will be Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lienkaemper Chapel, 78 NW First St.

Nikkie Darlene was born June 17, 1943, in Akron, Ohio, to Carol A. Walker and John Daniell Carrick. She was raised in New Kensington, Pa., until 1958 when she moved to Huntington. She graduated from Huntington High School, and married Robert A. Wiley on Oct. 14, 1961. Together they raised four children and one nephew, then later divorced.

Her pleasures and combined interests included poetry, writing, sharing, caring, beading, sewing and the great outdoors. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and joyfully expecting to be a great-grandmother soon. Her greatest love and passion was caring for her children, grandchildren, everyone else's children and grandchildren, and dear beloved friends.

She is survived by her dear friend, Jack Hegleson of Boise/Ontario; her parents, Del and Carol Layland of Ontario; brother, Ron Redmond of Tampa, Fla.; sister, Cathy Ferrell and her husband, Billy, of Redding, Calif.; step-sisters, Helen Funderburk and husband, Jim, of Salt Lake City, and Shannon Carpenter and husband, Ira, of San Diego; step-brother, Steven Layland and wife, Carol, of Tampa, Fla.; children, Debria Wiley of Adrian, Bobby Wiley of Phoenix, Ariz., Carol Sue Phillips-Wiley of Adrian, and Michael Wiley and wife, Angie, of Huntington; nephew, Ricky Floyd of St. Anthonys, Idaho; grandchildren, Joshua Polfer and wife, Kayla; Danielle Polfer and husband, Shane; Mykal Jesse Box-Wiley, Robby Phillips, Kirsten Nicole Phillips, Jeremy Wiley, Bobby Wiley, Blake Wiley, Mykaela Wiley, and Tanner Lunsford; and many dear cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, as well as J.J. her beloved, devoted feline companion, and Roe.

She was preceded in death by her step-sister, Dorothy Jorgensen, her mother-in-law, Annette Timm, and her godmother, Birdie Bayne.

Kayla Klock-Feeley

Kayla Shae Klock-Feeley, 12, of Canyon Lake, Texas, a former Baker City resident, died Nov. 14, 2002, at Canyon Lake as the result of a motor vehicle accident.

Her memorial service was Nov. 19, 2002, at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home at Canyon Lake. Burial was at Fair Oaks, Calif.

Kayla was born on Aug. 31, 1990, at Sacramento, Calif. She and her mother, Donna Barber, lived in Baker City in 2000.

She died when the 2000 Nissan Quest she was riding in collided with a school bus. The crash caused a chain reaction involving two other vehicles, according to a report in the San Antonio (Texas) Express News.

The Nissan was driven by her stepmother, Kay Klock. Her daughter, Sidney Klock, 11, also was a passenger in the vehicle.

They were on their way to school when the accident happened about 7:20 a.m. Kay Klock is a teacher and physical education coach at Mountain Valley Intermediate School where Kayla attended classes. About 30 school bus children were treated at the scene for scrapes and bruises, the newspaper reported.

Kayla is survived by her mother, Donna Barber of Sacramento; her father, Lonnie Klock of Canyon Lake, Texas; brothers, Valien Klock of Canyon Lake and Nick Barber, Corey Barber, Jayden Barber and Seth Barber, all of Sacramento; grandparents, Valerie Feeley of Baker City; great-grandparents, Bob and Freda Waldron of Baker City; cousins, Katirah Huff and Lexy VanCleave of Baker City; aunt and uncle, Lisa and Colin Huff of Baker City; uncles, Robert Feeley and his wife, Rita, of California, and Clint and Scott Feeley, both of Baker City.

A memorial fund has been established at Wells Fargo bank at Canyon Lake, Texas, to help defray funeral costs.

Cregor Fagenstrom

Cregor Patrick Fagenstrom, 88, died Nov. 19, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

There will be a celebration of his life at 11 a.m. Monday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 17th Street and Pocahontas Road.

Cregor Fagenstrom was born at Great Falls, Mont., on March 17, 1914, to Hjalmar and Hilma Hammer Fagenstrom. After graduation from high school, Cregor attended Montana State University at Bozeman, majoring in architecture.

In 1943, while a patient in a hospital, he met his future bride, Ottilie, who was a nursing student at the time. They were married in October of 1943.

Cregor served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1945 at Okinawa. After his stint in the service he worked as a building contractor and they lived at Santa Ana, Calif., for the next 30 years.

While in California they bought their future retirement property, sight unseen, at Stices Gulch. After retirement they moved to Baker City.

Cregor's creativeness in building and his talent in rockwork was very much a part of his life and definitely showed in the building of their home. Cregor and Ottilie enjoyed traveling. They were able to see Europe and Israel.

Survivors include his wife, Ottilie; children, Rory, Kerry, Joyce, Patrick and Jon; grandson, Steve; granddaughter, Leslie; and his identical twin brother, Berger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wilford; and sisters, Singrid and Beth.

Becky Neal

Becky Lynn Neal, 40, a longtime Halfway resident died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

There was a Celebration of Life service at 1 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Halfway. Interment was at the Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway. There was a reception afterward at the Lions Hall.

Becky was born at St. Elizabeth Hospital on April 5, 1962, to Robert C. and Ila L. Wingerd Brown. She was raised and educated at Halfway, graduating from Pine Eagle High School in 1980.

She left Halfway after graduation to attend ITT Community College at Boise. Becky received a degree in fashion merchandising and business accounting.

After graduation, Becky put her degree to work for her. Her first job was for Baird Oil Co. at Boise. After 1Þ years, she moved back to Halfway and helped with the Union Oil business after her father became ill.

Becky held various jobs within the community, including managing the lounge at Wild Bill's and doing the bookkeeping, Community Schools director, bookkeeping at Farmer's Insurance, working at Old Pine Market and managing Jacob's Dream.

The one position that she seemed to love the most was that of having the day care in her home. Becky loved children and they loved her.

In 1986, Becky and Ron Neal were married in Halfway at the home of Bob and Ila Brown. They had two children: Megan was born in 1987 and Billy in 1989. Becky truly loved her children, she enjoyed taking part in their activities, worried about them constantly, was always ready to prepare a meal, give a hug, or kiss an owie.

Becky enjoyed snowmobiling, camping, horseback riding, cooking, the river and boating. She loved to visit with friends either in person or on the phone. Becky always ended her conversation with "I Love You" and those who loved her as well responded with "I Love you too, Beck."

Survivors include her children, Megan and Billy; her mother, Ila Brown; sisters, Mary Moody of Halfway and Sheri and Dean Sass of Meridian, Idaho; nieces, Cortni Harris of Halfway and Jill and Ken Dooley of Nampa, Idaho; nephew, Ryan Sass of Meridian; aunts, Della Kimbrough of Wendell, Idaho, and Martha and Clyde Perry of Star, Idaho; an uncle, William and Darlene Brown of Twin Falls, Idaho; numerous cousins; and a special friend, Gene Zachary of Halfway.

Becky was preceded in death by her father, grandparents and brother-in-law, Fred Moody.

G. Roger Turner

G. Roger Turner, 68, of Baker City, died Nov. 19, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center.

His memorial service was at 2 p.m. Friday at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Pastor Lura Kidner-Miesen of the United Methodist Church and the Rev. Rob Irwin of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral officiated. There was a reception afterward at the United Methodist Church.

Cremation was by Gray's West Pioneer Crematory. There will be a private inurnment at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Roger was born on Oct. 14, 1934, at Wingville to George E. and Pearl "Babe" Emery Turner. He was a 1952 Baker High School graduate and a longtime Medical Springs cattle rancher.

He married Arleta J. Wirth on June 13, 1953. He and Arleta raised quality Hereford cattle in Baker and Union counties, grazing on deeded acres, forest service land (in the Wallowas) and Bureau of Land Management lands. His cattle consistently "topped the market" at the Baker Livestock Auction. Early on, his cattle were sold and shipped at the railhead out of Baker City, destined for Washington and Idaho.

Roger retired from ranching in 1972 and moved to Baker City. He then worked at the Baker Livestock Auction and Ford's Welding. In 1976, he moved to Nyssa where he worked as a state brand inspector.

While living at Nyssa, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He had lived at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center since 1986.

He was a member of the Baker County and Oregon Cattlemen's associations, Baker Elks Lodge, No. 338, a director of the Keating Soil and Water Conservation District and a charter member of the state Forestry Board. He was nominated by the chamber of commerce for "Farmer of the Year."

He also was a longtime 4-H club leader at Keating and a volunteer at the Junior Livestock Show and Kiwanis Auction and a member of the Sumpter Valley Railroad. He was honored as "Patient of the Month" this year at the health care center. Roger loved to vacation with family and friends in the Minam.

Survivors include his children, Lanna Jo Dawson and her husband, Gary of Elgin, Kellie D. Harrold and her husband, Rock, of Albany and Bret W. Turner and his wife, Shelia of Ontario; seven grandchildren, Zeb Johnson of Portland, Tara and J.V. Dawson of Elgin, Zachary and Kassidy Harrold of Albany and Amelia and Hailee Turner of Ontario; his father and stepmother, George E. and Effie Turner, and his uncle, George McLeish, all of Baker City.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Doernbecher Children's Hospital, St. Elizabeth Health Care Center, the Baker Senior Center or a charity of one's choice through Gray's West & Co.
