Clarence Silvester Carter
CARTER, Clarence Silvester - Age 92 of Sutherlin, Oregon went to be with his Lord Saturday February 24, 2001 in a local hospital. He was born June 7, 1908 to Walter and Ada (Cox) Carter on the family ranch in Golson, Oregon. On June 29, 1929 in Eugene, Oregon he married Erma Thompson who preceded him in death on September 15, 1992. Clarence worked 44 years for the Oregon State Highway Department as highway foreman until he retired in 1970. He loved to garden and hunt. Mr. Carter was a member of the Church of Christ and for many years served as an elder at the Drain Church of Christ. Survivors include his son Richard Carter and his wife Eloise of Sutherlin; four grandchildren Tim and Melodie Carter of Gales Creek, Oregon, Becky and Mark Koble of Eugene, Oregon, Rick and Linda Carter of Pendleton, Oregon and Pam and Nick Dietlein of Salem, Oregon and 10 great-grandchildren. Clarence was also preceded in death by his parents, sister, brother and an infant grandchild. Memorial services will be held Friday March 2, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Oakland Church of Christ. Ken Prather will officiate. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Clarence Carter's memory to a Scholarship Fund at Boise Bible College and these may left at the Oakland Church of Christ or mailed to the church at P.O. Box 120, Oakland, Oregon 97462. Private cremation rites have been held. Private inurnment will be held in the Rest Haven Memorial Park in Eugene, Oregon. Chapel of the Firs is in charge of arrangements.

Robert L. L. Goldie
GOLDIE, Robert L. - Born November 29, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, died on February 14, 2001, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was born to John Cooper Goldie and Elenor Sinclair Goldie, who preceded him in death. Bob was one of six siblings and is survived by one sister who resides in Illinois. Survivors also include his wife Christine Evans-Goldie of Roseburg, Oregon, daughter Chris Goldie Markham of Sacramento, California, her husband Ronald Markham and their daughter Samantha Goldie Markham, and daughter Alisha Evans-Goldie of Roseburg, Oregon. He also has a son and a daughter who reside in California. Master sergeant Goldie retired from the United States Marine Corps after 21 years of faithful service. His military career took him to all corners of the world. Military service included World War II, the Korean War where he survived the Chosin Reservoir, two tours in Vietnam and embassy duty in several nations. In 1957 he also participated in one of the military experiments involving troops and nuclear devices. MSgt Goldie was also an expert in communications and marksmanship. Bob also retired after 20 years from the California State Automobile Association Insurance Company. In 1990 he moved to Roseburg where he enjoyed woodworking projects and raising animals on a small ranch in Lookingglass. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Bob attended Redeemers Fellowship and was blessed by knowing the Lord Jesus as his personal Savior. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Redeemers Fellowship with Pastor Steve Walker officiating. We will be celebrating Bob's wonderful life. Interment will follow at Roseburg Memorial Gardens. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Redeemers Fellowship, where Bob's heart and prayers remained until the end.

Jessie Mae Reed-Kingsbury
KINGSBURY-REED, Jessie Mae - Age 95, of Roseburg passed away at her home, on her birthday, Monday, February 26, 2001 following a two week illness. She was born on February 26, 1906 at Bristow, Iowa to Jess and Anna (Trindle) Young. Jessie was the second child of a family of six. In 1912 her family traveled to Wyoming by train because her mother was ill and the climate would be good for her TB. After the visit the family traveled by covered wagon from Wyoming to Wisconsin. The trip took five weeks. In October 1926 in Hibbing, Minnesota she married Rosswell Barrett. She and Rosswell had two children prior to his death. On June 12, 1941 in Phoenix, Arizona she married Henry Reed. They came to Oregon in 1946. Over the years, Jessie worked at several department stores as a retail clerk. She was a sewing instructor for the Singer Sewing Machine Shop for five years. Mrs. Kingsbury was a charter member of the Evangelical Free Church where she taught Sunday School, Bible School and Bible Fellowship for many years. Her husband Henry preceded her in death. In July 1984 in Sutherlin she married her childhood sweetheart, Wayne Kingsbury and moved back to Wisconsin for a short time. Mr. Kingsbury preceded her in death as well as her son, Robert Raymond Barrett, who died on November 17,1993. Jessie is survived by one daughter, Pat Brown and her husband Clarence of Roseburg; three grandchildren, Jeff Brown and Rand Barrett both of Roseburg and Nancy Stotler of Camas Valley; five great-grandchildren, Matt and Jeremy Brown, Jessica Morey, Aaron and Jordon Stotler; a sister Dolores Anderson of Vancouver, WA and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a very kind and generous soul who was much loved by her family and friends. Bon Voyage! She will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 2, 2001 at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Virginia Hilton will officiate. Internment will follow in Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Those who wish may pay their respects on Thursday, March 1, 2001 from 4 until 7 p.m. at WILSON'S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES who is in care of services.

Eldon E. "Lefty" Weaver
WEAVER, Eldon E. "Lefty" - Age 82, resident of Canyonville, died at a hospital in Roseburg on Monday, February 26, 2001. He was born on April 19, 1918 at Scio, Oregon to the late Elmer and Ora Cleveland Weaver. He went to school at Rose Lodge, Oregon and graduated in 1936. He was married to Wanda Vance on August 2, 1940 and she survives. Lefty was a veteran having served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1945. Lefty was employed at Herbert Lumber Co. for 33 years where he was a sawyer. Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Wanda of Myrtle Creek; sons, Darwin Weaver of Grants Pass, Oregon, Gayle Weaver of McMinnville, Oregon and Jerry Weaver of Roseburg, Oregon; daughters, Mary and her husband Jim Custis of Brookings, Oregon, Sandra Harding of Deer Lodge, Montana, Patty and her husband Al Huskey of Canyonville, Oregon, Cherry and her husband Chuck Collins of Canyonville, Oregon, Glenis and her husband Lynn Dimmick of Tucson, Arizona and Debra and her husband Charlie Fite of Myrtle Creek, Oregon; an uncle, Arden and his wife Coy Weaver of Roseburg; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren , nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter Elma Rishel in 1968 and a brother Wallace Weaver. He enjoyed camping, fishing and going for rides on the weekends. He also enjoyed being around his grandchildren. There will be an informal memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Cherry and Chuck Collins, 4704 Tiller Trail Highway, Canyonville, Oregon. Billy Ray Moreland
MORELAND, Billy Ray - age 71, of Wilbur, passed away at his home on February 2, 2001. He was born July 9, 1929 to parents Everett & Octavie (Johnson) Moreland. Mr. Moreland worked as a driller & powderman for Spencer Brothers Construction. He worked on the Mt. Nebo project as one of the drillers and various others jobs in this area. Many knew him by his nickname "Dynamite Bill". He will be remembered as a hard worker and a family man. His grandchildren were a great joy to him. Bill and his wife Jo enjoyed fishing and clamming in their retirement years. Survivors include: Wife Jo Moreland of Wilbur, OR, children Bill Moreland Jr. of Riddle, OR, Mike Moreland of Washington, Jimmy Jo Moreland of Roseburg, OR, Jody Bammann of Roseburg, OR, Linda Stone of Wilbur, OR, Clint Goodwin of Ashburn, Virginia, Sisters Betty Ann Crabtree of Bandon, OR, Olive Jean Kidwell of Grove, Oklahoma, Numerous grandchildren also survive him. His parents, three brothers and five sisters preceded him in death. No public services will be held. Private interment will be at Wilbur Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Taylor's Family Mortuary in Winston.

Jessie J. Owens
OWENS, Jessie J. - Age 77, of Winston, went safely home to be with her Lord on Saturday, February 3, 2001. She was born June 22, 1923 in Ava, Missouri, daughter of Henry and Alta (Thompson) Daniels. She was raised and educated in Arkansas and married Claude Sizemore in 1941 in Missouri. She worked in the ministry. She moved to Winston in 1966, which has been her since. She enjoyed being a mother of her three daughters and four sons, and even helped her youngest son raise his three children. She married Miles "Bud" Owens in 1976. Jessie believed in God and loved to pray. She was a member of the Roseburg Church of God. She is survived by her children: Juanita Clark & her husband W.T. of Trenton, MO, Selena Clark of Winchester, OR, Sarah McHargue & her husband Claude of Dillard, OR, LeRoy "Claude" Sizemore and Alfred Sizemore & his wife Linda, both of Roseburg, OR, Joe Sizemore & his wife Sandy of Tucson, AZ, Andy Sizemore & his wife Lonna of Lake Havasu City, AZ. Her brother, Ray Daniels of Coos Bay, OR, Three sisters, Irene Jackson of Rock Springs, CO, Frankie McMillan of California and Betty May of Coos, Bay, OR. Nineteen grandchildren, thirty-nine great grandchildren and a great, great-grandchild. Also numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents & her two husbands, Claude Sizemore and Bud Owens. She also survived four sisters, including Edna and Fern and two brothers, including Willie.Graveside services will be conducted at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Oakland on Wednesday, February 7, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. Officiating will be Pastor Doyle Pooler. Friends may pay their respects on Tuesday evening from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Taylor's Family Chapel in Winston.

Evelyn Lorraine Pitchford
PITCHFORD, Evelyn Lorraine - Age 67 of Roseburg passed away on Friday, February 2, 2001 in a local hospital. She was born on July 23, 1933 in Pewaukee, Wisconsin to Gerald and Evelyn Lorraine (Luetke) Plotz. On September 22, 1950 in Oklahoma she married Glen Ludwig, who preceded her in death on September 11, 1980. She also married Robert Pitchford who preceded her in death. Evelyn worked as a legal secretary in Wisconsin prior to moving to Oregon. Locally she worked for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and the Veterans Administration Hospital in their document section retiring in 1994. Evelyn was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God Church. She is survived by three sons: Brian Ludwig and his wife Candy of Cody, Wyoming, Glenn Ludwig, Jr. and his wife Renee of Arpin, Wisconsin, Les Ludwig and his wife Jane of Roseburg, Oregon, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren, a sister Theresa Cavalluzzi of Waukesha, Wisconsin and a brother Larry Plotz of Michigan and numerous nieces and nephews. Edna Marie Sand
SAND, Edna Marie - Age 84, lifetime resident of Roseburg, passed away February 1, 2001, at a local nursing home. She was born Edna Marie Backlund, October 6, 1916, in Roseburg, to Carl and Mabel (Anderson) Backlund. She married Stanley Sjogren in Roseburg in 1936. Stanley passed away in 1967. In 1974, Edna married Joe Sand in Roseburg. Joe passed away in 1989. She loved baking, especially cookies and angel food cake. She enjoyed playing bingo, bunko, 31, and pinochle. Thursday mornings she met with the ladies of Faith Lutheran Church and sewed blankets. Edna was active in the Melrose Grange where she received The Granger of the Year Award. She was busy all the time. Tuesday afternoon seemed to be the only free time open in her weekly schedule. Edna is survived by her sons; Dennis and wife Jeanne Sjogren of Roseburg, Dick and wife Linda Sjogren of Roseburg, stepdaughter Charlotte and husband Harry Johnson of Portland, stepson Steve and wife Berle Sand of Glide, nine grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. Her brothers; Paul and wife Arleen Backlund of Roseburg, Art and wife Pat Backlund of Medford, Oregon and her sisters; Alice Walker of Roseburg and Dorothy Hogg of Winston. She was preceded in death by her husband Stanley Sjogren and her husband Joe Sand, stepsons Glenn Sand in 1975 and Joe Russell in 1994, her brothers Victor Backlund and Otto Backlund, her sister Helen Thackery and her parents. Memorial Services will be held Thursday, February 8, 2001, 2:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 820 W. Kenwood St, Roseburg. Pastor Ray Venghaus officiating. Martha Williams
WILLIAMS, Martha - Age 75 was called to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 3, 2001 after a long tiring heart condition. Martha was born in Portland, Oregon on May 27, 1925 to parents of German decent. She married Charles K. Williams on May 2, 1942. She and Charles remained in the Portland area raising three daughters and a son. After Charles retired, they moved to Roseburg, Oregon in 1979. Martha spent much of her time homemaking and loved the outdoors. She spent many hours knitting garments to donate to various church organizations. She was preceded in death by her parents Conrad and Carolyn Miller, along with four sisters and four brothers. She is survived y her husband of 58 years, Charles K. Williams of Roseburg, Oregon, three daughters, Mary Carter of Roseburg, Oregon, Jeannie Smith, and Cindy Schneider of Portland, Oregon a son Charles C. Williams also of Portland along with seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at Long & Shukle Memorial Chapel, Roseburg, OR at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 7, 2001. Martha will later be laid to rest at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.

Ernest Lee Hammond
HAMMOND, Ernest Lee - 86 of Umpqua passed away Sunday, February 4, 2001 in a local care center. He was born May 3, 19/14 in Clarksburg, W. Virginia to Homer H. and Bertha H. (Rollins) Hammond. On January 4, 1937 in Clarksburg he married Alice Cuppett. Mr. Hammond served in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean Coflict. He retired as a chief engineer. Mr. Hammond worked as a security policeman at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The Hammond's moved to Sutherlin in 1975. Mr. Hammond was a member of the American Legion Post 152 in Oakland, Oregon and the Kellogg Grange. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife Alice Hammond of Umpqua; daughter of Judith E. Gollehon of Coca, Florida; sons James L. Hammond of Melborne, Florida and Dennis W. Hammond of Rockledge, Florida; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr. Hammond was preceded in death by two brothers William and Robert and a grandchild. Graveside services will be held on Friday, February 9, 2001 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. Roger Falter Smith
SMITH, Roger - Age 83 of Roseburg, passed away Sunday, February 4, 2001 in a Roseburg hospital. He was born April 21, 1917 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Chauncey & Emma (Falter) Smith. Roger grew up and attended school in Lincoln, NB. He attended the University of Nebraska studying mechanical engineering and then the U.S. Naval Academy attaining a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1940, Roger began his career in the U.S. Navy. His first position was as Division Officer on the USS Minneapolis and then Executive Officer on three different submarines. On May 13, 1944 at the Presidio in San Francisco, he married Bernice "Cissie" Ayers. Following WWII, the couple moved to Ohio where Roger attended the University of Ohio, expanding his degree to include political science and then attended George Washington University. He was an Officer with the Bureau of Naval Personnel in the late 40's and Commanding Officer of the USS Sea Leopard from 1950 until 1952. Roger was on assignment with the Atomic Energy Commission and the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project until 1955, when he was offered the position of U.S. Naval Advisor to the Argentine Government. The entire family found this to be a special learning experience. In 1957, he returned to Command the USS John A. Bole, a 2200-ton destroyer, until 1959. He spent another period of time with the Atomic Energy Commission. In 1960, Roger and his family moved to Oregon where he was the Sales Manager with Pacific Float Company and then returned to school at the University of Oregon to complete courses for his teaching certificate. Roger began his career with Roseburg High School in 1961, teaching physics, oceanography, industrial science, was a counselor and wrestling coach until his retirement in 1977. Over the years, he was very active in the community- serving on the Roseburg City Council, Past President of the Isaac Walton League, was active in the construction of the North Umpqua Trail, and in recent years taught boating safety with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. His pastimes often include sailing, which he dearly loved and had the opportunity in the early 80's to be involved with a true "Viking Expedition." Roger enjoyed being outdoors including fishing & hunting as well as his woodwork. Virtually everyone in his family has something he made and gave to them. A special place in his heart was always for his family and in most recent years, focused on his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 55 years- Bernice "Cissie" Smith; his children- Terryann Smith- Macke and husband James of Roseburg, Roderick F. & Carole Smith of San Diego, CA, Russell W. & Julie Smith of Seattle, Maria E. Smith and her fiancee Gene Bratsch of Coos Bay, Laurea A. & Roy Arnoldt of Bandon and Albert J. Vaughns of Goldendale, WA; his grandchildren- Paula, Marnie, Jason, Bernice, Gordon & Cassandra; a sister- Alice Jo Wittig of Chugiak, AK; a brother- Dr. Richard D. Smith of Lubbock, TX as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by a daughter- Lesley Smith- Vaughns. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 10, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. in St. George's Episcopal Church. The Reverend Sherman Hesselgrave will officiate. Wilbur Pearl Thorp
THORP, Wilbur Pearl - Age 70 of Cottage Grove, Oregon, passed away on February 3, 2001. He was born on May 19, 1930 in Bonners Ferry, Idaho to Walter and Lulu (Howerton) Thorp. On January 1, 1968 in Nevada he married Martha Matilda Wolf. He is a long time resident of Oregon and has lived in Cottage Grove since 1980. He served in the U.S. Army - U.S.A.F. He was a logger and did small engine repairs. His main interest was Operation Santa Claus, because he loved children. He is survived by his wife Martha Thorp; daughter, Linda Shorey of Cottage Grove, Oregon; son, Tim Cosner of Lewistown, Montana; brother, Harold W. Thorp of Yoncalla, Oregon, William H. Thorp of Sacramento, California, Edwin Thorp of Coos Bay, Oregon; sister, Winnie Bean of Drain, Oregon; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Thorp was preceded in death by four brothers: Earl, Wally, Richard, and Donald. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 9, 2001 at 1 p.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Chapel. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2001 at 1 to 5:00 p.m. and Thursday, February 8, 2001 at 1-5:00 p.m./7-9:00 p.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Chapel. Burial will be in Fir Grove Memorial. Kaye Biancalana
BIANCALANA, Kaye - died at home in Roseville, CA Wednesday, February 7th, at the age of 77. She was born in Berkeley, CA February 17, 1923. Kaye was an active member of the American Cancer Society Reach To Recovery program for over 25 years. She was also a member of St. Claire's Catholic Church and faith-sharing group, Roseville. Kaye was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joel, and by her son, Robert. She is survived by her daughter, Jill (h-Richard) Wiseman; Grandchildren, Michael (w-Christine) Wiseman, Christopher (w-Allison) Wiseman, and David (w-April) Biancalana; by seven great-grandchildren, Shannon, Austin & Lauren Wiseman, and Trinity, Brian, Cody & Stephanie Biancalana; and by four nieces and two nephews. Also by a brother-in-law, Dario Biancalana, and by two sisters-in-law, Gloria Burt and Judy Biancalana. Visitation was held on Friday, February 9, from 4 to 7 PM with a Rosary at 7 PM at Lambert Funeral Home, Roseville, CA. The Mass of Christian Burial was held at 9:30 AM Saturday, February 10, at St. Rose Catholic Church, Roseville, CA. Father Michael McDonald of St. Claire's was Celebrant. Cremation to follow. Rollen Leo Davis
DAVIS, Rollen Leo - age 59 of Roseburg, passed away of natural causes February 2, 2001. He was born February 9, 1941 in Parkersburg, West Virginia to Chester L. and Thelma F. (Gillespie) Davis. He majored in Mathematics and SubAtomic Physics at the University of Tennessee. He was a veteran with 30 years of distinguished service in the Navy which included six tours in Vietnam and a year at the South Pole with the National Research Center. He worked as Chief Engineer in the Merchant Fleet in Alaska and Washington, where he married Peggy Grant in 1978. They moved to Sutherlin in 1980 where Ron retired from the Navy in 1988. His long career also included electronics, refrigeration and heating, medical gases technician, and master diesel and aviation mechanic. Rollen (Ron) was employed at the VA Roseburg Medical Center, where he met his wife, Bonnie McKee. They were married on May 29, 1999 in Roseburg, Oregon. He was a Member of the Hucrest Community Church of God, the Roseburg Harley Owner's Group (H.O.G.), and AFGE Local 1042. His hobbies were riding his Harley, astronomy, metalworking, and photography. He loved animals of all kinds, but especially his family of beloved show cats. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Peggy and his daughter, Kristy. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie K. Davis, brother Lyle Davis, two sons, Craig Davis of Eureka, Ca., Jeffrey Davis of Tatum, Texas, and Daughter, Lori Davis of Grass Valley, Ca., and seven grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Tuesday February 13, 2001 at 5:00 PM at the Hucrest Community Church of God in Roseburg with Pastor Paul Kendall officiating. Private interment will be held in the Roseburg National Cemetery. Roseburg Funeral Alternatives and Funeral Alternatives Crematory is serving the family. Harold Edgar
EDGAR, Harold "Hal" - Memorial services for Harold H. Edgar, age 70, of North Bend, will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. The Rev. Paul Teyler will officiate. A fifth generation Oregonian he was born Sept. 12, 1930, in Garibaldi, to Craig and Dee (Vaughn) Edgar. He died Feb. 6, 2001, in Coos Bay. Hal graduated from Roseburg High School and served in the U.S. Air Force in England and Germany before returning home to Oregon. He started at guard for the first two years at Linfield College for what is still the NCAA record for longest streak of winning football seasons. He graduated from Linfield in 1958 with majors in economics and business administration and went to work for Boeing Airplane Company. A few years later, he started his award-winning 39-year career as a Farmers Insurance agent. Hal was extremely active as a Jaycee, making 102 visitations around the state of Washington in one year as state chairman, and one of his proudest accomplishments was being selected as JCI Senator 7567. In addition to his civic activities Hal played fastpitch softball and coached Little League Football. In 1971, Hal moved to Coos Bay, where he fished for steelhead and salmon and learned to fly. Flying was the most beautiful and exciting thing he had ever done, and earning his private pilot's license was a highlight of his life. He umpired baseball and softball games and was chosen Oregon State Softball Association Umpire-In-Chief of the Year 1981, before turning his passion to golf. Hal played golf almost every weekend with a wonderful bunch of friends, winning his share of tournaments and matches, and in 1990, played two rounds at the birthplace of golf, St. Andrews in Scotland. Hal's incurable optimism and incredible sense of humor will be missed by his clients, competitors and company. He is survived by his wife, Pauline, and her family, Rick, Tracy, Jessica, and Raven Skinner of Coos Bay; Rod Skinner of Seattle; and Debbie Skinner of Portland; son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Natalie of Coos Bay; sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Dick Larsen of Beaverton; nephew and niece-in-law, Jeff and Chris Larsen of Denver; and niece and nephew-in-law, JoDee and Cecil Magden of Portland, and their daughter, Emilee. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy. The family suggests memorial contributions to Linfield College Football Program, c/o Polly Sanders, 900 S.E. Baker St., McMinnville, Ore. 97128. Virgil Leonard Lee
LEE, Virgil Leonard - 86 of Winston, passed away on February 7, 2001. He was born in Cecil, Arkansas to Henry and Doshie Lee on November 8, 1914. On April 13, 1940 he married Amo James in Hanford, California. A Douglas County resident since 1941, Virgil served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked in the lumber industry for thirty six years and retired from U.S. Plywood in 1978. He is survived by Amo Lee, his loving wife of 61 years; children, David Lee of Lookingglass and Joan Lee of Winston; Carole and Eugene Whiteley of Winston; Virgil and Donna Lee of Aloha and Susan and John Godines of North Bend. He was preceded in death by thirteen brothers and sisters and by son William in 1945. His twelve grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren all considered him the "best grandpa in the world." He is also survived by Donna Hinch of Tenmile who is a very special friend of the family. Virgil indulged his wife, fished the rivers, and was a master of animals. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 9, 2001 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Chapel of the Roses. Family and friends are invited to join together for a celebration of Virgil's life on Saturday, February 17, 2001 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at his Winston home.

Stanley G. Mendenhall
MENDENHALL, Stanley G. - age 59 of Wilbur, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2001 in a Roseburg hospital. He was born December 27, 1941 in Sheridan, Oregon to Fred and Helen (Tatom) Mendenhall. Stan grew up and attended school in Willamina, Oregon. On July 9, 1960 in Willamina, he married Eileen Mae Reeser. She preceded him in death in July of 1998. In the early 70's, Stan moved his family to the Roseburg area. His career driving truck spanned 42 years with a great number of those with Gene Whitaker Trucking and the entire time, with only one accident, which wasn't even his fault. Away from work, he loved spending time with his family, which often included throwing horseshoes, hunting, camping, baseball (in which he participated in school) and even showing his skills with the yo-yo. On May 22, 1999 in Wilbur, Stan married Sandy Berkey-Reeser. He was active in his industry with the Trucking Association and was a National Rifle Association member. He is survived by his wife- Sandy Mendenhall of Wilbur; his sons and daughters-in-law Randy and Anne Mendenhall of Camas Valley and Gary and Kim Mendenhall of Roseburg; his daughters and sons-in-law Sherrie and Ron Rhodes of Sherwood, Lorrie Mendenhall and Bonnie Wilcox both of Sutherlin, Lisa and Blaine Ketchum of Sutherlin and Elizabeth and Rick Sirven of Wilsonville; step children David Berkey of Lebanon, James Berkey of Amity, Deborah and Kevin McAhren of Ontario, Karen Berkey of Dayton and RaDonna and Howard Berkey-Price of Kennewick, WA; brothers and sisters Dick Mendenhall of Independence, OR, Alice Satterlee of Madras, OR, Jerry Mendenhall of Roseburg, David Mendenhall of Sutherlin, Gale Croy of Davenport, WA, Roy Mendenhall of Ranier, OR, Dennis Mendenhall of Sutherlin, Kathy Miles of Lakeview, Carmen Finlay of Portland and Pam Vance of Roseburg; grandchildren- Ashley, Josh, Sarah, Justin, Michelle, Amanda, Rebecca, Jacob, Anna, Stephanie, Danielle, Michael, Daniel, Brandy, Jeffrey, David, Matthew, Heidi, Angel, Steven, Aubrey, Tristan and Josh as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by a brother Melvin Mendenhall, sisters Shirley Robuck Mendenhall and Carol Ann Mendenhall and a stepson Leroy Berkey. Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 11, 2001 at 1:00 PM in Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. Officiating will be Pastor Don Franke. Interment will follow in Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Friends who wish may pay their respects Saturday from 5 until 8 PM at Chapel of the Roses.

Clara Oline Ross
ROSS, Clara Oline - Age 84, of Cottage Grove, died January 8, 2001 at Magnolia Gardens, where she had been a resident there since June of 1999. Clara was born on October 31, 1916 in Oakland, CA to Charles and Maren (Wardener) Pedersen. Clara graduated from Freemont High School in 1933. In 1937 Clara graduated from Merritt Hospital as a registered nurse. On September 2, 1939 she was wed to Charles Dudley Ross, who preceeded her in death on April 29, 1986. Clara moved to Glendale, OR in 1945 and then to Scottsburg in 1960. She worked in nursing for 27 years. From 1964 to 1979. They owned Roses Flowers in Reedsport, OR. Clara retired in 1979 in Scottsburg. Clara enjoyed crocheting and Wednesday sewing club. She maintained a flower garden and loved to read the Bible. Survivors include daughter Paula Knighten of Cottage Grove; son Eric Ross of North Bend; nieces Carol Jacabosky and Janet Nicholson and a nephew Marvin Nicholson who were raised with love by their Aunt Clara; four grandchildren; nine great grandchildren. A funeral service for Clara will be held Saturday January 13, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Dunes Memorial Chapel with interment following at the Scottsburg Cemetery. Alma Christine Cole
COLE, Alma Christine - Age 84 passed away January 14, 2001 at Mercy Care Center. Alma was born March 27, 1916 in Cylinder, Iowa to Herbert and Marie (Norland) Knudson the sixth of nine children. On March 18, 1934 she married Ralph Edward Cole in Boone, Iowa. In 1939 they moved to Southern California where she worked at Cannon Electric for 19 years. After Ralph retired they moved to Umpqua, Oregon. In May 1990, Alma moved to Roseburg. She was devoted to family and friends, loved gardening, canning, and cooking its bounty. She is survived by her daughter Loretta J. Williams of Roseburg, Oregon; son, Robert R. Cole and wife Gail of Eugene, Oregon; grandchildren, Robert Williams and wife Rita of Brentwood, California, Christine Guinotte and husband George of Hesperia, California, Rebecca Williams of Roseburg, Oregon, Michael Cole and wife Kristen of Lake Oswego, Oregon, Jonathan Cole and Casey Jones of Sutherlin, Oregon, Gabriel Cole and Chennel Hunt of Roseburg, Oregon; great-grandchildren, Michelle and Brian Guinotte, Jonathan Williams, Noah Wist; sister, Hazel Norris; sister-in-laws, Fern LaPre and Betty Knudson. Numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph, son-in-law, Robert Williams, four brothers, three sisters, and a granddaughter. She will be missed by all those whose lives she has touched. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 16, 2001 from 4 until 7 P.M. at LONG AND SHUKLE MEMORIAL CHAPEL. Alma will be placed to rest in Altadena, California.

Glenn Wilson Wilcox
WILCOX, Glenn Wilson - Age 82, of Roseburg, passed away peacefully January 14, 2001 at a local hospital. He was born November 7, 1918 to Guy and Hattie (Mercer) Wilcox in Cozad, Nebraska. On August 28, 1942, in Sidney, Nebraska, Glenn married Leta Irene Bentzinger. Glenn liked music and enjoyed playing the piano and violin. His children and grandchildren brought him great joy. He was a quiet and gentle person, with a charming sense of humor. In his spare time he loved to read and play with his many cats. Leta and Glenn played daily card games and occasionally he won a game. After serving in the Army, Glenn worked in Civil Service. He spent 20 years in Sidney, Nebraska at the Sioux Ordinance Depot and 16 years in Concord, California at the Naval Weapons Station. In 1989 Glenn and Leta moved from Antioch, California to Douglas County. Glenn is survived by his wife Leta Wilcox of Roseburg, his children; Dennis and wife Carla Wilcox of Roseburg, Leslie Wilcox of Anchorage, Alaska, Judith Shively and partner Carol Calvin of Napa, California, and Jeffery and wife Arlene Wilcox of Cottage Grove; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His sister Cleo and husband Russ Shelley of Larmie, Wyoming, and his brother Ronald Dean and wife Evelyn Wilcox of Cozard, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by a brother Norvin Wilcox in 1995 and sisters; Ardis Coffman in 2000 and Audrey Pepler in 2000. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church School, 750 W Keady Ct., Roseburg, Oregon. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 17, 2001, 12 noon until 2:00 P.M. at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. Memorial services will follow visitation. Mack Adam Anderson
ANDERSON, Mack Adam - Age 79, of Roseburg went home to be with the Lord, on Monday, January 15, 2001 from a local hospital. He was born on January 3, 1922 at Stidham, Oklahoma to Bird and Ollie ( McCabe) Anderson. On October 21, 1942 in Lindsay, Oklahoma he married Weeta Tribbey. Mack served in the Army Air Corps, 9th AAF Heavy Bomber Group in the South Pacific during WWII and received the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat and a number of other decorations for his service. Following the war he returned home and in 1947 he and Weeta came to Roseburg. Mack worked for Pre-Mix Concrete for aproxamitly ten years before going to work with Roseburg Sand and Gravel as a truck driver in the late 1950's. In 1970 he went to work for the Douglas County Solid Waste Program and retired as superintendent in 1984. Mack helped establish and build the First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, where he was deacon and treasurer for 32 years. He raised his children in church to love and believe in God and to continue to raise their families the same way. Mack always put the Lord and his church first. He had a deep love for his earthly family as well as the family of God. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He is survived by his wife of over 58 years, Weeta Anderson of Roseburg, two daughters: Sherry Hanlon and husband Rick and their two daughters; Chala and Camy of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, Deborah "Debbie" Baker and husband Richard and their daughter Rachel DeFea of Glide, Oregon, a sister, Lorean "Rene" Walker of Roseburg, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son, who died in 1953 and a brother, Bill Anderson, who died in 1974. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. Pastor Earl Walker will officiate. Interment will follow at Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Military Honors will be provided by V.F.W. District #12 Honor Guard. Those who wish may pay their respects on Wednesday, January 17, 2001 from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the Chapel. At the family's request contributions may be made in Mr. Anderson's memory to the First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, 5599 N. Umpqua Hwy., Roseburg, OR 97470. Mildred L. McCloskey
McCloskey, Mildred Lydia - Age 85, of Roseburg, passed away after a short illness, on Thursday, January 11, 2001 at a local hospital. Mrs. McCloskey was born November 11, 1915 in Butler, Missouri, daughter of Joseph Lee and Lydia Jane (Long) Gander. She grew up on her parent's farm southwest of Butler, in the Happy Hill community. She attended a one-room schoolhouse for her first eight grades of education. She then took room and board in Butler, where she attended Butler High School, graduating with the class of '34. She moved to Kansas City, MO, where she met and later married Jay McCloskey. They were married 62 years before his death on September 24, 2000. Most of her married life was spent in California. Upon retirement, they made their home in Winston, where they enjoyed many activities with friends in Winston and Roseburg. They enjoyed volunteer work. They moved to Roseburg after her Jay became ill and became residents of a nursing home. Mildred attended the First Conservative Baptist Church in Roseburg. She is survived by a sister, Velma Willcox of New Canaan, CT. A sister-in-law, Vera Gander Ruger of Appleton City, MO, nine nieces and two nephews. Her husband, Jay, her parents, a brother, Floyd Gander and two sisters, Martha Weinberger and Alice Burley preceded her in death. Friends are invited to a memorial tribute for Mildred at Riverview Terrace Apartments, located at 1970 W. Harvard in Roseburg on Sunday, January 21, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Taylor's Family Chapel.

George Mack Nance
NANCE, George Mack - Age 89, of Roseburg passed away on Monday, January 15, 2001 in a local care center. He was born on November 1, 1911 at Clarksville, Texas to Robert and Nell Nance. George was in real estate and insurance for many years, he also owned and operated a clothing store in Pensacola, Florida. He moved from Santa Cruz, California to Roseburg on June 12, 1993 with his wife Elvira to be near his stepdaughter and son-in-law. He is survived by his wife, Elvira (Bertali) Nance, step-daughter Julie Engelking and her husband Charles all of Roseburg. George was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Lynn Nance who died in 1956 and a son, Jerry Lynn Nance, who died on April 29, 1987. Private cremation rites have been held in care of WILSON'S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY.

Jay William Scott
SCOTT, Jay William - On January 15, 2001 dad went into God's hands and to be with our mother who passed away February 11, 1996. Dad was very lonely without her. He was born July 1, 1924 in Eureka, California to John J. and Mary E. (White) Scott. He started school in Montana and then the family moved to Bandon, Oregon. He told us about being in the Bandon fire when he was 12 years old running from house to house waking people to tell them the whole town was on fire. Growing up in Bandon was a very happy time for him. Shortly after joining the U.S. Marine Corp at the age of 19, World War II broke out. He served as a truck driver, delivering food, water and ammunition to his buddies across the South Pacific. He made it all through the war without a scratch. After the war in 1945, he returned to Bandon, Oregon. He met Betty Prescott in Coos Bay; Oregon and they were later married. In 1949 they had their first son Craig, then in 1956, Mark joined the family. Jay was a mill worker all of his life, working in different mills in the Roseburg and Winston area. He made many friends at the mills that he liked to shoot pool and have a good time with. During the summers Jay took his family on vacation trips around, Oregon, California and Washington. After his retirement in 1986 he and Bette traveled a lot with their dogs, Peppi and Pupper. Life for him was not the same after losing his wife and many of his friends. Survivors include his two sons, Craig R and Mark J. Scott, both of Roseburg; brother, Gene Scott and his wife Marilyn: sister, JoAnn Kaiser all of Bandon, Oregon; granddaughters, Melissa Archey and her husband Jason of Centralia, Washington and Melanie Biggs and her husband Scooter of Setka, Alaska; 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A sister June Freeman preceded him in death last year. Private family services will be held at a later date in the Roseburg National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the family to help with expenses. These donations may be left at Roseburg Funeral Alternatives and Funeral Alternatives Crematory who is serving the family.
