Dorothy R. Couch
COUCH, Dorothy R. - 70, of Roseburg, passed away Saturday, November 18, 2000 in a Roseburg hospital. She was born June 14, 1923 in Loyal, Wisconsin to William and Eva Dittner. Dorothy grew up and attended school in Chewelah, Washington. On October 31, 1940 in Aurora, Colorado she married John T. Couch Jr. The couple lived in Fairfield, California for 48 years. Dorothy was head baker with the Fairfield, Suisun School District lunch program until her retirement in 1978. She enjoyed crocheting, being with family and friends as well as traveling in their motor home. Dorothy always looked forward to church on Sunday. In California, they attended Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Vallego. Mr and Mrs. Couch moved to Roseburg in September of this year to be close to family. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with their family gathering at Linus Oaks. Dorothy will be deeply missed by her husband, John; daughter and son-in-law Linda and Lloyd Stepp; son and daughter-in-law Gary and Sharon Couch; grandchildren, Christine, Timothy and Scott; great grandchildren, Matthew, Jeremy, Courtney and Maverick; sisters, Inez and husband George Kakalecik and Lois Wells; brother, Clarence and wife Doris Dittner as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and by brothers, Robert, Lavern (Bud) and Maurice Dittner. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 21, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. in the Christ Lutheran Church, Sutherlin. Officiating will be Frank Fiedler III. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Christ Lutheran Church, 161 W. Second Ave., Sutherlin, OR 97479 or the charity of your choice. Private cremation was held under the care of WILSON'S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES CREMATORY.

Gwendolyn Sue 'Susie' Humbert
HUMBERT, Gwendolyn Sue 'Susie' - Age 35, of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, passed away Friday, November 17, 2000 in a Eugene, Oregon hospital. She was born September 14, 1965 in Prescott, Arizona to Richard and Lydia (Godwin) Allen. Susie grew up and attended school in Phoenix and Reno. As a young person, she attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. On January 1, 1994 in Reno, Nevada, Susie married Daniel W. Humbert. Her focus in her life was her family. Susie loved being outdoors even if it was just working in the yard. She is survived by her husband, Daniel and sons, Derrick Allen Giannoni and Nathan, Alex, and Seth Humbert, all of Myrtle Creek, her mother, Lydia Godwin of Phoenix, father Richard (Skip) Allen of Las Vegas, Nevada, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Glen and Duveen Humbert of Myrtle Creek, her grandfather, Charles Godwin, her sister, Shawn Allen and her children, Shandel and Joshua of Phoenix, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, David, Terry, Lory, Linda, Mike, Robert and Steve, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, including her cousin, Van Alexander. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 20, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. in the LONG & SHUKLE MEMORIAL CHAPEL. Officiating will be Elders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Interment will follow in Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Betty Jeane Sepeda
SEPEDA, Betty Jeane - Age 72, of Sutherlin, passed away Wednesday November 15, 2000 at a Roseburg Care Center. She was born September 20, 1928 in San Jose, California to Lawrence and Rose (Castro) Sepeda. She moved to Sutherlin in 1998 from San Jose where she had been a resident most of her life. Betty was married to Arthur J. Sepeda who preceded her in death in 1997. She was a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in San Jose, California. Her hobbies were playing the slot machines and bingo. Most of all she was fantastic and devoted wife and mother. Survivors include her children, Ken Sepeda and his wife Andrea of Sutherlin, Larry Sepeda of Aptos, California, Berta Montgomery and her husband Gary of Laurel, Montana and Linda Herricks and her husband Gregg of Modesto, California; a sister, Florence McNeil and a special friend and sister Clara Carillo of Campbell, California; 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. A daughter, Loxie Sepeda and two sons, Jim and Dennis Sepeda also preceded her in death. Rest well my dear, you have earned it. Velma G. Bell
BELL, Velma G. - Age 98, of Silverdale, WA passed away on November 10, 2000 at her home. Velma was born on June 27, 1902 in Smithfield, MO to Hugh and Henrietta (Hulbert) Briggs. On February 19, 1921 at Wallace, ID she married William Bell. She enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball. Velma is survived by her son-in-law and caregiver Frank Belleci of Silverdale, WA, daughter Jeanette Jenks of Tiller, OR, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976, and her daughter Carole Belleci in 1998. At her request there will be no memorial services. Dorothy Burritt Hunter
HUNTER, Dorothy Burritt - 90 of Sutherlin passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2000 in a Roseburg foster home. She was born December 3, 1909 in Vancouver, BC, Canada to Frank R. and Anna (Burritt) Austin. Dorothy married Robert Hunter who preceded her in death on March 23, 1970. They Spent their married life in Cayucos, California by their beloved ocean. Mrs. Hunter was an R.N. and worked at Mercy Hospital in her earlier years. She also worked at the Children's Orthopedic Hospital in Los Angeles, California for several years and for 5 years she worked in Hawaii Emergency Room with her beloved husband. Mrs. Hunter retired in 1973 for San Luis Obispo General hospital. She was very proud of her many years as a nurse. Mrs. Hunter was a longtime member of the Eastern Star Lodge #587 in California and also the Morro Bay TOPS Club. Survivors include her sisters Mildred E. Churchill and Marjorie Hahn; sister-in-law Anita H. Austin and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hunter was also preceded in death by two brothers. Private interment will be in Cayuos-Morro Bay Cemetery in Cayucos, California. CHAPEL OF THE FIRS is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Floyd Lane
LANE, Robert Floyd - Age 71, of Roseburg passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2000 at his residence following a lengthy illness. Robert was born on April 25, 1929 at Alhambra, California to Floyd Percy and Lena (Chester) Lane. Her served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Robert attended Chaffee College where he played on the college football team. He worked as a brewer at the Budweiser Brewery in Van Nuys, California from 1957 until 1980 when illness forced him to retire. On December 17, 1975 in Sime Valley, California he married Joan Conner. Robert enjoyed fishing, hunting and football. Robert and Joan moved to Roseburg in 1985. Robert is survived by his wife Joan of Roseburg, two sons: Bob C. Lane of Tucson, Arizona, and Dale Lane of Meridian, Idaho, a daughter Susan Yeager of Tustin Foothills, California, two step-sons: Michael Conner of Newbury Park, California and Ken Conner of Roseburg; two step daughters: Judy Parsons and Vicky Conner both of Sherwood, Oregon, 13 grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by a brother K.C. Lane and a sister Margaret Schulie. At Roberts request no funeral service will be held. Private cremation rites have been. Beverly Ann Fretheim O'Shea
O'SHEA, Beverly Ann Fretheim - Age 56, passed away Thursday, November 16, 2000 at her home in Boise, Idaho of cancer. She was born January 1, 1944 to Gerhard and Esther Fretheim in Stanley, North Dakota. She was raised on a farm. She loved to hunt, fish, gardening and art. She attended high school and then moved to Sutherlin, Oregon in the 60's where she was associated with Douglas Construction. She then moved to Hood River where she attended business college. She moved to Boise, Idaho where she was a bookkeeper and property manager. She was preceded in death by her father, Gerhard in July of this year. She is survived by a loving husband, Thomas O'Shea, one step son Aaron, mother Esther, three sisters Elaine Nisly of Oakland, OR., Linda Polley of Coured'Alene, Idaho, Alice Collier of Sutherlin, OR. and one brother Gary Fretheim of Oakland, OR. Also one niece Kim Fraley and two nephews Chip Collier and Jimmy Fretheim. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, November 22, 2000 at 4 pm at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Sutherlin, OR, all friends and family are welcome to attend.

Bernice Elsie Olsen
OLSEN, Bernice Elsie - 89, just nine days less than 90 years old, passed away Friday November 17, 2000 of natural causes. She was born November 26, 1910 in Red Willow, Alberta, Canada to William and Elizabeth "Lizzy" (Bignell) Thurston. As a teenager, her family moved to Sumner, Washington where she attended Summer High School. After her father died, she worked in a variety store to help support the family. She graduated from Beauty School and operated her own shop in Sumner. On February 16, 1942 she married Oscar T. Olsen in Sumner, Washington. They spent three years in Pecos, Texas while Oscar served in the US Army Air Corps as a corporal. After being discharged they moved to the farm near Fortuna, North Dakota where they farmed until 1962. During this time they had two sons Ted in 1946 and Roy in 1948. The Olsen's returned to Sumner, Washington in 1962 to care for Bernice's mother. After her mother recovered they remained in Sumner. Oscar died in 1965 and Bernice began working as a housekeeper for Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, Washington. Mrs. Olsen retired in 1971 and moved to Sutherlin, Oregon to be near her son Ted. She enjoyed many activities including sewing, crocheting, embroidery, cake decorating, flower arranging, gardening, canning and cooking. Mrs. Olsen enjoyed visits from family far and near and always had a fresh cake or cookies for everyone. She belonged to Homemaker's Club of Divide County, North Dakota and the Rebecca Lodge in Sumner, Washington and Oakland, Oregon. Mrs. Olsen was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers Alton of Red Willow and Elza of Sumner, Washington; sister Sylvia Wiles of Arizona and a grandson Greg if Sutherlin, Oregon. Survivors include her sons Ted Olsen and his wife Dianne of Sutherlin, Oregon and Roy Olsen and his wife Jung of Reardon, Washington; grandchildren Gary and his wife Tameka of Medford, Oregon, Dennis and his wife Jennifer and Haley, Lisa and Bruce all of Sutherlin, Oregon, mark and his wife Mina and Marquois of Reardon, Washington, Jeff of Vandenberg AFB, California and Angela of Seattle, Washington. Memorial services will be held Friday November 24, 2000 at 10:00 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 512 Valley Avenue in Sumner, Washington. Bishop Terry Presiding. Margaret Mary Thompson
THOMPSON, Margaret Mary - 78, of Umpqua, Oregon passed away Sunday,November 19, 2000 in a Roseburg, Oregon hospital. She was born August 7, 1922 in Eastman, Wisconsin to Louis and Bracel (Curler) O'Brien. On September 23, 1941 in Fall Creek, Wisconsin she married Lorentz P. Thompson who preceded her in death in June 1986. The Thompson's moved from Anaheim, California to Umpqua, Oregon on June 19, 1967. Mrs. Thompson was a member of the VFW Post 2468 Ladies Auxiliary, the Cooties and the Umpqua Community Church. She enjoyed playing bingo, working crossword puzzles, reading, playing electronic games, playing poker and cooking. Survivors include her daughter Lynda Fugate and her husband Ronald; son Ronald "Skip" Thompson and his wife Cheryl all of Umpqua, Oregon; sister Velma Kaeding of Fall Creek, Wisconsin; brother Jerry Pape and wife DeLoris of LaPine, Oregon; sister-in-law Josephine O'Brien of Fall Creek, Wisconsin; brother-in-law and sister-in-law William and Mildred Thompson of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; grandchildren Sheri Johnson of Sutherlin, Oregon, Michael Hopkins of Roseburg, Oregon, Christy Scott of Coos Bay, Oregon, Jennifer Esquivel of Sutherlin, Oregon and Joe Thompson also of Sutherlin, Oregon; 15 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Edith "Peggy" Lorraine Vedder
VEDDER, Edith "Peggy" Lorraine - Age 72, of Riddle, Oregon went to be with the Lord, Saturday, November 18, 2000 in a Medford Hospital. She was born on a homestead near Riddle to Dollie and Ken Hendrick on April 10, 1928. Peggy went to school in a one room schoolhouse her first four grades and attended Riddle School thereafter graduating in 1946. On December 24, 1946 in Myrtle Creek, Oregon Peggy married Fred Vedder. They owned and operated Vedders Market in Riddle where Peggy worked for a short time. Her main focus in life was her family. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Peggy was a wonderful cook, especially when it came to her pies. She loved to spoil her grandchildren, she loved doing yard work, flowers. She won Yard of the Month many times. She liked to fish, hunt and pick fruit and vegetables to give away. She enjoyed going to The Nickel Bowl with Fred. Peggy fed most of the stray cats in Riddle with the help of her special friend Judy McDonald. She is survived by her husband, Fred Vedder of Riddle, Oregon, son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and wife Annette Vedder, of Canyonville, OR, daughter Dianna Davies-Oakley of Grants Pass, OR, brother and sister-in-law, Wyatt and Wilma Hendrick of Riddle, OR, sister Myrtle Lee Briggs of Riddle, OR, mother-in-law Ruth Vedder of Riddle, OR, grandson, Nathan Davies of Roseburg, OR, granddaughters, Angel and Jennifer Vedder, Canyonville, OR, grandson, Freddie and Kendall, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Peggy was preceded in death by brother, Alvis Hendrick in 1951, father Ken Hendrick in 1969, mother Dollie Hendrick in 1999, and sister, Mae Belle Jones in 1988. God needed a special lady to take care of his flower garden so He called Peggy home. She will be dearly missed by all that know and loved her. John Derby Wilson
WILSON, John Derby - Age 89, of Sutherlin died November 16, 2000 at a Roseburg hospice facility while his wife held him and J.S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier played softly in the background. He was born November 8, 1911 in Alameda, California, the youngest of four children, to Joseph Elmer and Marion (Derby) Wilson. The family moved to Mill Valley, California when John was seven years old, and he lived there until 1989, when he moved to Sutherlin. John was married to Dorothy Greenwood for 42 years, and she preceded him in death in 1978. They had two sons, Frank Joseph Wilson of Sutherlin and Michael Greenwood Wilson of Oakland, California. John married Katherine Scarlett (Grater) in January 1982, and there were new and wild adventures to come. John had worked as a plumber and steamfitter and was a member of Union Local 38 in San Francisco for 60 years. During the war his skills were utilized in shipbuilding at Marinship. John was a generous, kind and gentle man with a good sense of humor and a genuine zest for life. His interests were many and varied: geology, marine biology, evolution, native plants, hiking, biking, canoeing, playing the harmonica, ships and the sea, cooking (he was a superb baker of breads), Giants baseball, drawing, rock and vegetable gardening. He sang many old ditties to entertain his friends. He was an avid reader. He built a boat which he used for fishing trips. He spent hours working on his lathe and built miniature steam engines. He took great pleasure in observing wild birds and the other abundant wildlife on his farm east of Sutherlin, and he enjoyed tinkering with and running his tractor. He could fix anything. A common comment by those who met him, "What an amazing man!" He loved reminiscing about the many trips he enjoyed with Katy, most of which took place while in his 70's: backpacking in the Ruby Mountains, the Sierra, the Trinity Alps, the Siskiyous, the Marble Mountains, the King Range, the Yolla Bolly and Warner Wilderness areas, and across the volcanic crater Haleakala on Maui. They also went on lengthy bicycle camping trips in California and Oregon as well as numerous car camping trips. And then there was that bicycle century ride in Marin County! John was preceded in death by his sister Martha Ann Walker of Napa, California. He is survived by his wife Katherine Wilson of Sutherlin, by his sons Frank and Mike, by his sister Dorothy Allen of Wickenburg, Arizona, and by his brother Thomas Derby Wilson of Redding, California, as well as nieces and nephews. Thomas (Tom) William Gregoire
GREGOIRE, Thomas (Tom) William - Died at home November 20, 2000 in (Green) Roseburg, Oregon after a brave battle with Renal Cell Carcinoma at the age of 47. He was born April 30, 1953 to Robert and Helen (Matelak) Gregoire in the Aberdeen General Hospital Aberdeen, Washington. He attended Aberdeen's St. Mary's Catholic School. At his 8th grade graduation he received the Father Charles Kelly Altar Boy Trophy Award and also the National Piano Playing Audition Award. He also attended the Hopkins Jr. High School and attended the Weatherwax High School graduating in 1971. While attending high school, he worked part time for his Uncle, the C.W. Hall Logging & Trucking Co. He later settled in Oregon and was truck foreman for Beaver State Sand & Gravel Co. at Roseburg, Oregon. He married Catherine Griffith at the Catholic Church in Eugene, Oregon April 8, 2000. He was a member of The Catholic Church in Eugene, The Croation Fraternal Lodge No. 271, Aberdeen, past member of the Ocean Shores Elks Lodge and past member of the IWA Local Union. Tom enjoyed working on cars and was interested in Antique cars and attended many Antique Car Shows He also attended and enjoyed auto racing. He loved Fishing, Clam Digging and Hunting. His travels took him through many of the states in the USA and all over Australia. He looked forward to coming and being with family especially on the Holidays. He was very interested always in the progress of the Logging and Lumber Industry of the Pacific Northwest. He is survived by his wife Catherine, his parents Helen and Bob of Cosmpolis, Washington and a daughter, Tamara Gregoire of Aberdeen, Washington. A Vigil Service for family and friends will be held Friday, November 24, 2000, 8:00p.m. at Myrtle Creek Family Funeral Home Chapel, 790 South Main in Myrtle Creek with Father Bill Ryan O.S.A. officiating. A Mass of Resurrection will be offered at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 2000 at All Souls Catholic Church above Coffenberry Middle School in Myrtle Creek, Oregon. Duane Cecil Roles
ROLES, Duane Cecil - Age 78, of Klamath Falls, Oregon passed away November 19, 2000 after a battle with cancer. Duane was born June 14, 1922 to Delmar Roles and Georgia Irene Wise. He was united in marriage to Bernadine Luke on April 15, 1950 in Roseburg., Oregon. Duane attended high school in Portland, Oregon and did a correspondence course in accounting. He served time in the Army Air Force as a Airplane Mechanic and gunner at Ft. Lewis, his final rank was a Sergeant. Duane earned his wings and three medals, American Theatre Service, Good Conduct and Victory Medals. For over 35 years he was the owner of Roseburg Shingle and Stud, Inc. in Roseburg. When Duane was five years old he ran away from home and floated an apple crate down the Columbia River, it sank and he was rescued by his buddy. Duane was the business owner of Roseburg Shingle and Stud, Inc. in Roseburg for over 35 years. Survivors include his wife, Bernadine Roles of Klamath Falls, OR, daughters, Susan Raia, Mary Schefstrom both of Klamath Falls, OR, Ann Roles of Spokane, WA, son Paul Roles of Selma, N.C., eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren, niece Patty Dell of Portland, OR, nephew Robert Roles also of Portland, OR, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Kerry Daniel Harmon
HARMON, Kerry Daniel - age 44, of Winston, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2000. He was born February 11, 1956 in Corvallis, Oregon, son of Sidney and Edna (Reeves) Harmon. He was raised in the Salem area where he received his early education. Kerry later graduated from Oregon State University, earning both his bachelors and masters degree in Engineering. He was a Licensed Oregon Professional Engineer. He was a veteran, serving his country while in the U.S. Navy. Kerry lived in Winston and was a self-employed consulting engineer. He enjoyed the outdoors and training bloodhounds and participated with the Douglas County Search & Rescue. He also enjoyed working in his shop. He had been associated with the Episcopal Church. He is survived by his mother, Edna Harmon of Salem, brothers Kenneth and Duawn of Salem, two aunts and two uncles. Also six cousins. His father, Dr. Sid Harmon, who died in 1993, preceded him in death. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. at the Court Street Christian Church, located at the corner of Court and 17th Street, in Salem. Richard Carvel McGarvey
MCGARVEY, Richard Carvel - age 85, of Oakland, passed away Saturday, November 25, 2000 in a Eugene, Oregon hospital. He was born May 29, 1915 in in Jeffersonville, Indiana to Robert and Laura (Bare) McGarvey. Mr. McGarvey attended schools in Jeffersonville and graduated from high school in 1933. He attended and graduated from Central Normal College in Danville, Indiana with a BA and a teacher's certificate. Mr. McGarvey taught high school and was a basketball coach until he was drafted into the Army in 1941. He retired from the Army as a full Colonel in 1964. On March 8, 1943 in Orlando, Florida, he married Frances Cates, who proceeded him in death on November 5, 1986. Mr. McGarvey attended and graduated with a Masters degree from USC. He was a Vice Principal and teacher at Mount Miguel High School in San Diego County until he retired on June 4, 1973. Mr. McGarvey also worked as a Real Estate Broker for many years. He moved to the area in the 1980's after Frances passed away. After moving to Oakland, he worked as a Rancher, Tree Farmer and Project Developer. In February 1992, he met Marie H. Kemp and on May 4, 1996 in Oakland, they married. Mr. McGarvey was a member of the Buckaroo Square Dance Club, a 50 plus member of the Masonic Lodge and the Oakland Church of Christ. He enjoyed basketball, working on his projects, was an avid collector and going to auctions. Mr. McGarvey was very personable with a wonderful sense of humor. Survivors include his wife Marie McGarvey of Oakland; daughters, Gwen Kennedy of San Diego, California, Linda McGarvey-Levin of Monterey, California and Maura Hayward o San Diego, California; son Rick McGarvey of Sutherlin, Oregon; grandchildren Blake and Conan McGarvey, Kyle and Erin Hayward, Francine Levin and Sarah and Valerie Beecroft. Mr. McGarvey was a generous, kind and loving family man. He was also proceeded in death by a sister Lois and a brother Robert. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at 1:00 pm at the Oakland Church of Christ. Ken Prather will officiate. Graveside services with military honors will be held in the El Camino Cemetery in San Diego, California. Florence Frasieur
FRASIEUR, Florence - Age 73, of Yoncalla, Oregon passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2000. She was born September 28, 1927 in Gaston, Arkansas, daughter of James and Susan (Spradling) Black. Florence graduated from Norman High School in Norman, Arkansas. On September 22, 1961 she married Andy Frasieur in Reno, Nevada. She is survived by Andy Frasieur of 39 years. After working for 20 plus years in McKay's Grocery Store in Drain, she decided to be a Homemaker. Her hobbies were baking, hunting, fishing and most of all she loved spending time with her family. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 30, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. at the Assembly of God Church in Drain, Oregon. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2000 from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove, Oregon. Burial will be at the Comstock Cemetery, Curtin, Oregon. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. SMITH-LUND-MILLS FUNERAL HOME is assisting the family.

Horace Crager
CRAGER, Horace - age 79, of Oakland, Oregon passed away on Monday, November 27, 2000 at home. He was born June 27, 1921 in Stateline, Mississippi to Daniel and Georgianna (Odom) Crager. He was raised in Mississippi and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a self taught man and moved his family to Oakland in February 1952, where he worked as a Heavy Duty mechanic for Martin Brothers Truck Shop ad Nordic Plywood and later ran his own business Crager's Auto & Truck Repair in Oakland before retirement. Horace enjoyed fishing, hunting, rodeos, and visiting with friends. He never met a stranger. On April 28, 1946, in Mendenhall, Mississippi he married Peggy Joyce Patrick. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Peggy, son Jim Crager and wife Debbie of Tenmile, daughters Marilyn Jones and husband David Jones, of Salem, Connie Williamson and husband Bill Williamson of Roseburg. Five grandchildren Doug Frost of Atlanta GA., Alisa Peterson and husband Gary of St. Louis Missouri. Kimberly Fisher of St. Paul Minn., Tara Crager of San Diego, CA. and Myah Crager of Tenmile, great grandson Kohl William Peterson of St. Louis, his beloved Yorkshire Terrier "Baby", brothers Luther Crager of Stateline, D.J. of Chatom, AL and sisters Doris Hennis of Chatom, AL and Louise McLemore of Meridian Mississippi. Numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Daniel and Georgianna, two brothers Woodrow and George. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 1, 2000 at Chapel of the Firs. Rev. Richard Carter & Rev. Ken Pranter will officiate. Those who wish to pay their respects on Thursday noon until five PM at Chapel of the Firs who is assisting the family.

Robert Lynn Gordon
GORDON, Robert Lynn - of Roseburg passed away on November 23, 2000. He was born on March 17, 1926 in Yacolt, WA to Stearns and Mary (York) Gordon. He graduated from Myrtle Creek High School in 1944 and served in the US Navy during WWII. Bob's career was in real estate and appraising. He is survived by his son Steve Gordon and wife Susan of Eugene, daughters Janis Brown and husband Jim of Roseburg and Lisa White and husband Robert of Scottdale, Arizona, stepchildren Debby Biles of Beaverton, Vicki More and husband Bob of Coos Bay and David Biles and wife Coleeta of Roseburg and his brother Keith Gordon and wife JoAnn of San Jose, California. Bob was proud of his Scottish heritage. He loved to sing and laugh and was an avid U of O Duck fan. A gathering for friends will be held in March.

Ruth Mabel Stewart
STEWART, Ruth Mabel - died at her daughters home in Beaverton, Oregon on November 26, 2000. She was born in Harper, Kansas on July 17, 1905. She is survived by two daughters: Carolyn Joanne Heaney, Beaverton and June Attaway, Roseburg; six grandchildren, Michael, Timothy and Patrick Heaney; Stephen, Laura and Eugene Attaway; 14 great grandchildren; three great, great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent Hospice, 9205 SW Barnes Rd., Portland, OR 97225. Services will bed on Friday, December 1, 2000, at 2:00 p.m. at The Chapel on Willamette Memorial Park, in Albany, Oregon. PEGG, PAXSON & SPRINGER CHAPEL, in Beaverton, is in charge of arrangements.

Jack Leon Davis
DAVIS, Jack Leon - age 62, of Roseburg, passed away November 1, 2000, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born March 20, 1938 in Glendale, California to Orland C. and Verna M. (Heathcott) Davis. Jack grew up in Port Hueneme, California where he graduated form high school. During his younger years he enjoyed horseback riding and driving cars in destruction derbies. He married Angelita M. St. Marie on January 3, 1964 in Ventura, California. They moved to Coos Bay. Oregon in 1974 and then to Roseburg in 1998 to be near their children. He was a member of the ILWU union local #12 and the American Bowling Association. Jack was a wonderful family man always wanting his family near him. He especially liked to take his grandchildren bowling and watch them play baseball. He was a friend to all his neighbor's. The young children in the neighborhood always brought their bicycles to him when they needed fixed. Jack was a very tolerant man, never letting anybody know if he didn't care for them. Jack is survived by his wife, Angelita Mary Davis of Roseburg (Green District); his children, Rebecca Marie Stanfill of Coos Bay, Oregon, Gilbert Jerome Davis of Orchards, Washington, Patricia Ann Crook and her husband Scott Allen of Riddle, Oregon, Jacqueline Lee Willard and her husband Greg of Rice Hill, Oregon and Eric Timothy Davis of Roseburg (Green District). Brothers and sisters, Clyde Windel Davis, Ralph Lee Davis, Patrick Allen Davis, Yvonne Greenfield, Norma Jean Chaney and Lola Evelyn King. Grandchildren, Seth R. Stanfill, Onjoli M. White, Nolan S. Stanfill, Micah J. Davis, Brandon L. Crook, Kevin R. Davis. Bronson D. Knight, Nathan P. Davis and Zachary N. Willard. Great grandchildren, Sar'ai A. Stanfill, Jayden L. White and Zebadiah J. Davis. Leslie Hartley Morris SR.
MORRIS, Leslie Hartley - age 74, of Azalea, died at a hospital in Roseburg, on Tuesday, October 31, 2000. He was born at Denver, Colorado on October 5, 1926 to the late Leslie and Verlinda Swearinger. When he was a young boy the family moved to Missouri and then later returned to Colorado. Leslie had schooling in both Colorado and Missouri. He was married to Marian Pearce on January 24, 1959 at Las Vegas, Nevada. Leslie and Marian lived for many years in Southern California at both Los Angeles and Rialto and came to their home at Azalea in 1993. Leslie worked as a general contractor doing building construction. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran. Surviving besides his wife Marian of Azalea are four sons; Richard M. Morris of Redding, CA., William D. Morris of Rialto, CA., Leslie H. Morris Jr. of Upland, CA., Donald R. Pearce of Diamond Bar, CA., three daughters: Diane M. Carruthers of Ithica, N.Y., Cheri A. LaRose of Anderson, CA., Melinda M. Barth of Ingleside, ILL., 18 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Private family services will be at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 3, 2000, at the Mountain View Memorial Chapel. Memorial services will be at a later date at the Azalea Community Church with Pastor Wayne Mick officiating. Private urn interment will be at the Veterans Cemetery in Roseburg. Mountain View Memorial Chapel and Crematory at Myrtle Creek is assisting the family.

Effie V. Petersen
PETERSEN, Effie V.- age 73, of Roseburg, formerly of Tri City, died Wednesday November 1, 2000, at a Roseburg area care center after a long illness. Effie was born March 18, 1927 in Ralston, Nebraska the daughter of the late Louis and Margaret (Jenner) Johnson. On November 19, 1965 she was united in marriage to Cleo "Pete" Petersen in Walla Walla, Washington. The Petersens moved to Prescott, Arizona in 1966, living there until 1976 when they moved to Grants Pass, Oregon. They moved to the Tri City area in 1986 where they have resided ever since. Pete passed away in 1995 and Effie later moved to Roseburg after failing health. She will be remembered as a caring and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Surviving are a daughter, Marchel Clarkson, of Grants Pass; three sons: Doug (Nadine) Petersen, Prescott, Arizona; John (Sheila) Petersen, also of Prescott; Victor (Vickie) Petersen, Paulbo, WA; three step-daughters: Janis (Robert) Jensen, Springfield, OR; Deborah (Gentry) Myrtle Creek; Carole (Duane) Huston, Fossil, OR; 26 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, November 4 at the Mountain View Memorial Chapel, Myrtle Creek. Pastor Dan Jocoy will officiate. Burial will take place later in the Myrtle Creek I.O.O.F Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects just prior to service at the funeral home on Saturday.

Ruthie Mae Townsend
TOWNSEND, Ruthie Mae - Went to heaven to be with her Lord and Savior, on November 1, 2000 at the age of 70. She was born in Marble City, Oklahoma, on July 7, 1930, daughter of James and Pearl Poindexter. She has lived in Winston since 1954. She was united in marriage to William C. Townsend Jr. on January 11, 1964. Three brothers and three sisters, two sons, Ronnie and Jackie Bates, and two grandsons, Andrew McSperitt and Jacob Townsend preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of over thirty-six years, William Townsend Jr. Seven children. Donna and Stan McSperitt, Larry Bates, Jimmy Bates, Jerry and Christina Townsend, Lisa and Larry Schrader, William and Lillian Townsend and Leslie "Kay" Townsend. Three sisters, Maggie Beard (Ruthie's twin) and her husband Orman of Winston, Wilma and Dave Owens of Roseburg and Eller Barnes of Oklahoma. Three brothers, Ben, Tom and Gerald Poindexter all of Sallisaw, Oklahoma. Eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Also numerous nieces, nephews, and very dear family friends, including Chuck and Barbara Vaughn and Doc and Sabie Williamson. Ruthie's interests include sewing, doll making and her grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Taylor's Family Chapel in Winston, on Saturday, November 4, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. Officiating will be Pastor Bill Sanders of the Sutherlin Christian Assembly.

Laura E. Boyd
BOYD, Laura E., - age 71, of Roseburg passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at her residence. She was born on December 2, 1928 at Elkton, Oregon to August and Mildred (Lewis) DeGnath. Laura Lee or Mother as she was known by her friends spent many years working in local taverns as a bartender. She worked at the Idle Hour Tavern for over 10 years. Laura Lee was a people person and enjoyed being around people. She is survived by her daughter, Shelley Becherer of Springfield, Oregon and a granddaughter, Chelsea Jones of Roseburg, her mother Mildred DeGnath of Roseburg, three sisters: Irene Meredith of Medford, Oregon, Delores Lofton of Tenmile, Oregon, and Shirley Mortiz of Roseburg, a brother Norman DeGnath of Roseburg. At her request no funeral services will be held. Private cremation rites have been held. LONG & SHUKLE MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of the arrangements.
