SIMON, Harry G. - of Roseburg, born May 31, 1916, passed away October 17, 2000. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Simon. He is survived by Chuck and Frances Simon, Louise and Bob McDevitt, and Dan and Diane Simon, along with numerous grandchildren. He was a Jehovah's Witness.

Grace Neva Wood
WOOD, Grace Neva - 85, of Sutherlin passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2000 in Roseburg. She was born April 18, 1915 in Tioga, North Dakota to Edwin C. and Halen A. (Matlick) Carpenter. On March 1, 936 in Arlington, Washington she married Charles M. Wood who preceded her in death on June 1, 1997. The Wood's moved to Sutherlin in 1943. Mrs. Wood was a member of the Sutherlin First Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Rebecca's, Daughters of the Nile and the NCT. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, sewing, crocheting and reading. Survivors include her daughter. Sharon Rich of Portland, Oregon; sisters Beulah Holmes of Roseburg and Phyllis Stevenson of Arlington, Washington; grandsons David Rich of Portland, Oregon and Steven Rich of Casper, Wyoming; great grandson Charles Alexander Rich, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Wood was also preceded in death by her parents and brothers Wendell Carpenter and Lawrence Carpenter. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 21, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at Chapel of the Firs. Private interment will be on Monday October 23, 2000 within the grounds of Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Pastor Stacy Hance will officiate. Those who wish may pay their respects on Friday, October 20, 2000 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at CHAPEL OF THE FIRS who is in charge of arrangements.

Lawanda Louise Mettlach
METTLACH, Lawanda Louise - 68, of Sutherlin, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2000 in a Roseburg hospital. She was born July 5, 1932 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to John and Edna (Alexander) Turner. On January 21, 1960 in Long Beach, CA she married George "Red" Mettlach. They moved to Roseburg area in 1968 and lived in other parts of Oregon over the years until returning to Sutherlin five years ago. Lawanda is survived by her husband of 40 years, Red Mettloch, her children, Cynthia Blevin of Dexter, OR and David Foster of Federal Way, WA; step children, Cullen Mettlach of Fresno, CA and Connie Graham of California; brothers, Ray Turner of Hememt, CA, Roy Turner of Huntington Beach, CA, Wayne Turner of Bullhead City, AZ and Bill Turner of Irvine, CA; six grandchildren, Ranee Smith, Crystal Jenson, Tonya Travis, Denise Foster and Melody and Abby Mettlach; six great grandchildren, Damen, Tayler, Jorden, Cy, David and Grace. Graveside services will be held Monday, October 23, 2000 at 12:00 noon in Valley View Cemetery. Officiating will be Chaplain Jim Osborne. Service are under the care of CHAPEL OF THE FIRS.

Norman Clifton Miller, Jr.
MILLER, Norman Clifton - 68, of Myrtle Creek, passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2000 in a local care center. He was born on December 7, 1931 at Long Beach, California to Norman Clifton and Geraldine (Bouwens) Miller. Norman was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S. Army. Norman worked as a rack jobber for Sermon and Warren, a health and beauty aid wholesaler for 22 years. He managed apartments for 13 years prior to retiring. Norman was a people person and he enjoyed his work and the people he worked with. On January 9, 1993 in Hanford, California he married Beth Elsome. Norman and Beth moved to Myrtle Creek in 1995. Norman is survived by his wife, Beth Miller of Myrtle Creek, three daughters: Susan Killion and Linda Anderson both of Fresno, CA., Martha Johnson of Tollhouse, CA., a son William Miller of Coarse Gold, CA., a sister Barbara Green and nieces and nephews. Russell W. Arnold
ARNOLD, Russell W. age 77, of Camas Valley, passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2000 at his home. He was born April 30, 1923 in Franklin, Ohio, son of William and Mary (Tewart) Arnold. He was a veteran of W.W.II serving in the South Pacific with the first Division of the Marine Corp. After the war, he was united in marriage to Bonnie Johnson on August 3, 1946. Russell worked in the aerospace industry as a manufacturing engineer. He retired in 1992 and they moved to Camas Valley. He was a Life Member of the Masonic Order, Laurel Lodge # 13, The Scottish Rite and Hillah Shrine Temple and was also Past President of Douglas County Shrine Club. He is survived by: His wife of over fifty four years, Bonnie of Camas Valley, Children; Dawn R. Arnold of Lowell, MA, Dyan M. Arnold of Carson, CA Russell W. Arnold II of Roseburg, OR, Randall W. Arnold of Garden Grove, CA, Grandson, Christian Arnold of Carson, CA, Brother, Robert Arnold & his wife Estelle of Tucson, Arizona. Sister, JoAnn Mandzak of North Carolina and a brother in-law, Jack Johnson & his wife Shirley of Dayton, Ohio. At his request, no services will be held. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of TAYLOR'S FAMILY CHAPEL.

Rosemary Gillette
GILLETTE, Rosemary - Age 79, of Medford, OR passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2000 in Medford. She was born on May 5, 1921 in Corvallis, Oregon to John and Hazel (Rexford) Hill. She lived in the Rogue Valley since April of 1999, moving from Roseburg where she had lived most of her life. She was a dietary cook in a military hospital, until retiring in 1966. Mrs. Gillette enjoyed attending craft fairs and was an avid crafter making dolls and teddy bears. She enjoyed collecting earrings and books, and reading. Mrs. Gillette attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Roseburg. Surviving are her daughter, Judy Pelkey of Medford, OR, one son, David Wilson of Tigard, OR, two step-sons, Jim Kelsch and Steve Kelsch both of Eugene, OR and two step-daughters, Vicki Lewton of Portland, OR and Judi Donner of Montana, one brother, Bruce Avrit of Phoenix, AZ, and one sister Jeanne Proden of Eugene, OR. She has five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Rosemary was preceded in death by one son, Jack Gillette in 1964 and a daughter, Carol Wilson Gorman in 1994. A graveside service is planned at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery on Thursday, October 26, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. Officiating will be Mike Landers. Mary Eleanor Ringer Larson
LARSON, Mary Eleanor Ringer - Age 90, of Sutherlin passed away Monday, October 23, 2000 at her home. She was born February 16, 1910 in Portland, Oregon to Robert L. and Eleanor S. (Shaw) Ringer. On October 15, 1936 in Portland she married Douglas A. Larson who preceded her in death on March 23, 1998. Mrs. Larson worked as a registered rurse during World War II. Following the war she went to work as a teacher. She taught in Washington, California and Oregon from 1945 until she retired in 1965. The Larson's moved from San Luis Obispo, California to Sutherlin in 1982. Mrs. Larson enjoyed woodcarving and shell collecting. While she was able, she attended and played the organ at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit. Survivors include her daughters Mary E. Larson of Sutherlin, Oregon and Margaret Blair of Soulsbyville, California; son Douglas A. Larson of Concord, California; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Larson was preceded in death by a brother Robert Ringer. At her request no service will be held. Private cremation rites have been held. CHAPEL OF THE FIRS is in charge of arrangements.

Daniel D. Meserole
MESEROLE, Daniel D. - 84, of Roseburg, passed away Sunday, October 22, 2000 in a Roseburg hospice care home. He was born June 19, 1916 in Delta, Colorado to John & Nancy (Shipman) Meserole. Mr. Meserole grew up and attended school in Colorado. As a young man he moved to California in search of work. Mr. Meserole served his country during WWII in the US Army. On June 27, 1947 in Yuma, Arizona he married Norma Greenhalgh. For a number of years, he was involved in electronics and then auto mechanics. Much of his life evolved around "fixing things". In the early 60's, Mr. and Mrs. Meserole moved to Roseburg. He built and operated a second hand store on north Stephens as well as building their home which they lived in until 1995. He is survived by his step son & daughter-in-law Dennis and JoAnne Kerr of LaCrescenta, CA.; 2 grandchildren Daniel Kerr and his wife Ruth and David Kerr all of LaCrescenta, CA.; 4 great grandchildren Shreen, Rosemary, Shawn & Robert and 4 great great grandchildren Aliana, Charles, Jacqueline and Deland. Mr. Meserole was preceded in death by his wife Norma in 1998, brothers Alfred A., Robert R., Harvey H. and Charles C. as well as an infant sister. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 27, 2000 at 11:00 AM in Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. Remembrances and musical selections will be shared by his family. Interment will follow in Roseburg Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the VFW District #12 Honor Guard. Ginger Housley
HOUSLEY, Ginger - 49, of Roseburg, went to be with her Lord on Monday, October 22, 2000 following a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was born October 9, 1951 in Roseburg to Ellis and Wanda (Day) Prowell. Ginger grew up and attended school in Roseburg, graduating from R.H.S. in 1970. On June 27, 1970 in the Vine Street Baptist Church she married Lee Housley. In recent years, Ginger attended Umpqua Community College and attained her associate degree as a dental assistant. For the past six years, she worked with Dr. Alan Liesinger and his staff. Family was first and foremost in her life but hand in hand with her love for the Lord. Ginger battled breast cancer for four years and drew her strength from her mothers love of the Lord which she was taught at a very early age. Her desire for us would be to carry on and remember the joy and love she unselfishly gave to all she met. Ginger was drawn to children and older members of our community. She touched many hearts and was a mentor to numerous individuals. Ginger was a true giver and will be lovingly missed by all. Her family remembers her as a "very avid" shopper and there was not a "craft" she had not tried. Very important in Ginger's life was her church family at New Life Christian Center. She left all of her loved ones to be with her Lord & Savior and anxiously awaits the day we will meet again. Surviving are, her loving husband of 30 years, Lee; her children, Jeremy and Jennifer Housley of Bossier City, LA and Cody Housley of Roseburg; her children by love, Tommy Augustine of Salt Lake City, UT and Staci Wallis of Fresno, CA; her mother, Wanda Prowell of Roseburg; her sister and brother-in-law, Patti and Ken Long of Roseburg; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Allen and Donna Prowell and Steve and Karen Prowell all of Roseburg as well as Michael and Bobette Prowell of Salem; her very best friend, Lonna Roper of Roseburg and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Ellis and a sister, Carolyn. A celebration of her life will be held Friday, October 27, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. in the New Life Christian Center of Roseburg. Officiating will be Pastor David Coffey, now living in Texas. Private cremation will be held under the care of CHAPEL OF THE ROSES FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY. Delphis L. LeBlanc
LEBLANC, Delphis L. - Age 78, of Medford, OR passed away on October 21, 2000 at his home. Delphis was born on June 28, 1922 in Ashland, OR to Alfred and Zella (Dubell) LeBlanc. On June 1, 1946 he married Coleene Willhoit in Canyonville, OR. He lived in the Rogue Valley since 1963 moving there from Roseburg. Delphis served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was aboard the USS Buck (DD420) when it was torpedoed and sunk. Of 380 men on board, 88 survived. He received the Purple Heart due to injury sustained while saving the lives of his fellow shipmates. The men were in the water for 20 hours before rescue. He is one of the last remaining survivors. He also served aboard the Destroyer USS Ingraham. This was the lead destroyer when Japan was bombed. The USS Ingraham was hit by a suicide plane but managed to stay afloat. He worked for Todd Building Co. of Roseburg for 21 years. He also worked in the timber and lumber industry. He enjoyed photographing wild flowers, rock collecting, beachcombing and nature. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and worked with children for many years. He is survived by his spouse Coleene LeBlanc of Medford, OR, son, Adial LeBlanc of Winston, OR, daughter, Sandy Robinson of Canyonville, OR, sisters, Lola Blansett of Gladstone, OR and Laura Gray of Canyonville, OR, brother, Dale LeBlanc of Meford, OR, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Naylor. A memorial service will be held at Valley View Seventh Day Adventist Church, 3677 South Stage Road, Medford on Saturday, October 28, 2000 at 3:00 p.m. Officiating will be Pastor Jim Berglund. R. Brian Rickard
RICKARD, R (Roger) Brian - 59, of Roseburg, passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2000 at his home. He was born March 31, 1941 in Youngstown, Ohio. He was the son of Evelyn and Hershel Rickard of Youngstown, Ohio and Laguna Hills, CA who pre-deceased him. Brian was a 1959 graduate of Boardman High School in Young Town, Ohio. He received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1963 from the University of Michigan where he was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Working for Westinghouse Electric he moved to Southern California in the late 1960's. He soon began work with McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach and was employed there for the rest of his career. During that time he received masters degrees in business and management science from the University of Southern California. Brian retired to Roseburg, Oregon where he continued his avid interests in bridge, cooking and gardening and he became a farmer. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Renee and Jay Stallman of Mission Viejo, CA and Michele and Larry Rogers of Aliso Viejo, CA and by his brother and sister-in-law, Barry and Mary Rickard of Newington, CT. These and other surviving family members and friends wish Brian peace and eternal happiness. A time to visit with family and friends will be Friday October 27, 2000 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Chapel of the Roses. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 28, 2000 at Chapel of the Roses. Burial will be held within the grounds of Roseburg Memorial Gardens.

Anna Irene Carlin
CARLIN, Anna Irene - 79, of Sutherlin passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2000. She was born July 30, 1921 in Flatwillow, Montana to Harry and Otelia (Kuhlmann) Wilkinson. Survivors include her husband William D. Carlin of Sutherlin; sisters Evelyn Newberg of Helena, Montana, Leone Lapeyre of Great Falls, Montana and Lola Kuykendall of Sutherlin; nieces and nephews. Sarita Kruse Matar
MATAR, Sarita Kruse - age 65, passed away October 20 at her home in Santa Maria, California. She was born in Roseburg, June 29, 1935 to LeNoir and Martha Kruse. She attended Roseburg Jr Academy, Columbia Academy and received her dietitic degree at Walla Walla College. She took her internship at The White Memorial Hospital in LA. In 1962 she was united in marriage to Angel Matar. She was a member of the SDA Church. She is survived by her husband, Angel; three daughters, Jolene Rodriquez, Vivian and Andy MacDonald of Juneau, Alaska and Karen and Olaf Betat of Fraser, California; two sisters, Dolly and Charlene Weber and Lynetta and Floyd Murdoch of Beltsville, Maryland; a brother, Lynden and Margie Kruse of Roseburg and her mother, Martha Nichols of Roseburg. Also eight grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Angel worked for the Air Force as a chief of real estate which took them to various places including Panama and South Korea. After his retirement they lived in Roseburg a few years, then returned to their home in Santa Maria. Sarita was always ready to give up her plans to help her family whenever there was a need. This was her life until her health failed due to cancer. A memorial service was held at the Arroyo Grande Church with Elder Joe Mallinson officiating. She was laid to rest at the Riverside National Cemetery where she sleeps in Jesus awaiting the call of the lifegiver at the resurrection.

Jacob Edward Townsend
TOWNSEND, Jacob Edward, fifteen month old son of Jerry and Christina Townsend, passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2000. Funeral services will be conducted at Taylor's Family Chapel in Winston on Saturday, October 28, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. Officiating will be Pastor Bill Sanders. Private interment will be at the Riddle Cemetery.

Darlene G. Burdic
BURDIC, Darlene G. - age 65, of Caldwell, Idaho died Wednesday, October 18, 2000 at her daughters home in Logan, Ohio. Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, 2000 at Hilltop Memorial Cemetery in Nyssa, Oregon. Services are under the direction of Nyssa's Lienkaemper Chapel. This child of God has been called home through Grace and Mercy of Jesus Christ and by the Glory of our heavenly father. "Dolly" touched the hearts of all who were lucky enough to have her pass through their lives. She was a best friend, fishing partner, a confident, a teacher and a compassionate counselor to countless others along the way, on the road through life that god had chosen for her. She has left us with a space in our lives that is forever filled by her legacy of unconditional love. She was the best mama and grandma that anyone could ever have and she will be greatly missed. She was a loving wife and mother of nine children. She was the proud grandmother of twenty-five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles. " The things we feel so deeply are the hardest things to say. But we, the family, love you in a very special way. They say that memories are golden. Well that may be true but we never wanted memories, we only wanted you. If tears could build a stairway, and heartache make a lane, we'd walk a path to heaven and bring you home again. Vera Shukle
SHUKLE, Vera - Age 85, of Roseburg, passed away Thursday, October 26, 2000 in a local hospital. She was born January 13, 1915 in Will6722611cox, Arizona. She graduated from St. Joseph Hospital School of nursing in Phoenix, Arizona 1937, and worked in a catholic hospital in Prescott, Arizona. Vera moved to Roseburg in 1938 where she was employed at Mercy Hospital for several years. On December 30, 1940 in Roseburg she married Antone "Tony" Shukle. They moved to Los Angeles where Tony attended mortuary school and Vera worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital. During WWII she worked at the Tucson, Arizona Health Department. After the war was over she returned to Roseburg and worked for the Douglas County Health Department as a clinic nurse until 1961. She then worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital until retirement in 1976. Vera then assisted Tony with funeral work at Long and Shukle Memorial Chapel. She was a member of St Joseph Catholic Church and the Umpqua Lioness Club. Survivors include her husband Tony, Roseburg; one son Jim and his wife Claudia Shukle, Winchester; one daughter Toni and her husband Littell Rhodes, Roseburg; and one grand daughter Sasha Braghero and her husband Paul, Portland, OR. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, October 31, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. in St Joseph Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in the Sanctuary of Peace Mausoleum within the grounds of Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Contributions may be made in Vera's memory to the Umpqua Lioness Club. Charles Almore Thomas
THOMAS, Charles Almore - of Roseburg died October 27, 2000 at 84 from pneumonia and complications of Alzheimer's. A funeral will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, November 1st at Lincoln-Willamette Funeral Home in Portland, Oregon. Charles was born on a ranch in Holly, Colorado in 1916. He attended Colorado State and Denver University during the depression. During WW II he served with the Ninth Army as captain of an artillery unit. His battalion landed on Utah Beach 100 days after D-day, and he spent 151 consecutive days of combat in Europe. His unit was one of the first to enter Germany liberating prisoner of war camps. Charles married Mary Ann Ridders, a RN, in 1949 and moved to Roseburg where they raised three daughters. For 18 years Charles worked as an independent insurance adjuster in Roseburg. He owned his own adjusting firm for 16 years, and was busy after the 1959 blast helping the people of Roseburg. Charles served as sheriff of Douglas County from 1967 to 1969. In 1969 Charles and his family moved to Portland, where he worked as an adjuster for Zurich Insurance until his retirement in 1981. He was an active volunteer. He served as an instructor with the Power Squadron, an officer and volunteer for the Oregon's Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation, an adjutant in the American Legion, and was active in the Masonic Lodge. Following Mary Ann's death in 1996, he returned to Roseburg. He married Elizabeth D, Kennedy in 1998, and they resided at Linus Oakes Retirement Community. He enjoyed excursions throughout Douglas County's back roads, attended St. Georges Episcopal Church, and enjoyed playing bridge and the company of his friends at Linus Oaks. Charles is survived by his wife Elizabeth; daughters Dr. Kathryn Thomas of Flagstaff, Arizona, Mariah Beck of Roseburg and Corinne Thomas-Kersting of Portland; sons in law Paul Beck and Felix Kersting; and grandchildren Colin and Kelsi Beck and Alice and Annie Kersting. The family suggests remembrances be given to Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation, PO Box 10204, Portland, OR 97210-9998.

Elmer L. Halbert
HALBERT, Elmer L. - Age 93, of Myrtle Creek fell asleep in death October 2, 2000 to await the resurrection to a cleansed earth that Jehovah promised and in which he firmly believed. Elmer was born April 28, 1907 in Lenzburg, Illinois the son of the late Ralph and Mamie (Tryon) Halbert. He was raised in Illinois and moved to Ashland, Oregon in 1928. On October 21, 1935 he was united in marriage to Pansy Reed in Medford. The Halberts remained in the Ashland area for several years before moving to Myrtle Creek in 1948. Elmer worked briefly for the railroad and then took a job with Hana Nickel Mine in Riddle. He retired from the mine in 1972 after more than 17 years of employment. Elmer enjoyed ice skating as a youth in Illinois, and even had found an ice rink in Medford where he could skate from time to time. He also enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, and camping with his family. As a young man, he played baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals farm team for two years. Elmer was also a talented horseshoe pitcher, capturing the Oregon State Championship one year. Surviving are three daughters: Carol (Dr. John) Aaronson, Medford; Diane Bilyeu, Myrtle Creek; and Sharon (Raymond) Crytness, Redding California; two sons: David Halbert, Placerville, California; and Larry (Vicky) Halbert, Charbonneau, Oregon; 17 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, a sister, Jenny Hughes, Riddle; and a brother, Keith Halbert, San Jose, California. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 7th at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Myrtle Creek. Elder Steve Rottum will officiate. The Mountain View Memorial Chapel and Funeral Alternative Crematory, Myrtle Creek is serving the family.

Kenneth Leland Howell
HOWELL, Kenneth Leland - 45, a resident of Roseburg, died October 3, 2000, from complications of Leukemia. He was preceded in death by his father, Edgar Franklin Howell, mother Anne Jeane Howell. He is survived by his children, Kenneth William and Kellie Antoinette Howell. Archie "Slick" Theadore McCullough
MCCULLOUGH, Archie "Slick" Theadore - age 87, of Oakland, Oregon, passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2000, in a Roseburg hospice house. He was born March 3, 1913 in Davenport, Washington to Clarence C. and Dolly (Blake) McCullough. On May 25, 1935 in Klamath Falls, OR, he married Louise Allen. The McCullough's moved to Oakland in 1944. Mr. McCullough worked for many years as a carpenter. He was a member of the Carpenter's Union and the Woodworker's Union. Mr. McCullough enjoyed woodworking, especially making furniture, bedroom furniture, end tables and cradles. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and vegetable gardening. Survivors include his wife Louise McCullough of Oakland, OR; daughters, Sandra L. Rose of Yoncalla, OR and Carol A. Bennett of Medford, OR; sister, Goldie Peterson of Klamath Falls, OR; five grandchildren, Sheri Kimbrell, Robert Rose, Monica Leisner, Mark Terrel, and Charles Bennett, and eight great grandchildren. Mr. McCullough was preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters. At his request, no services will be held. Private cremation rites have been held. Private inurnment will be within the grounds of Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford, Oregon. CHAPEL OF THE FIRS is in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie June Reed
REED, Marjorie June - May 13, 1922 - September 23, 2000
Marjorie Reed, 78, who lived near Roseburg from 1961 to 1995, died September 23, 2000, in Salem, Oregon. She was born in Calhan, Colorado, attended Colorado State Teachers College and graduated from Chico State College in 1960. She earned a master's degree in counseling/education from Oregon State University in 1969. She taught and was a counselor at Winston Junior High School and other schools for 26 years. She moved from Roseburg to Bandon in 1995 and then to Salem in 1998. When she retired from Winston Junior High School, the student body and faculty presented her with a special Best Friend Award in appreciation for her many contributions. Since 1976, she enjoyed beachcombing at Bandon. Her home there became a well-loved family gathering site. She read widely and enjoyed river rafting and canoeing with her sister, Allie Mae Jackson. She actively participated in Altrusa International Club in Roseburg from 1979 through 1993, including serving as its President. She served as a member of the Citizen's Review Board for Children in Foster Care in Roseburg for several years. Survivors include her husband, Hayward, whom she married in 1943; sons, Hayward Douglas of Newport, George Robert "Bob" of Modesto, Calif., and Richard of Scappoose; daughters, Kathleen Johnson of Salem and Rose Reed of Newport; brothers, Edwin Sayles of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Paul Sayles of Chico, Calif.; sister, Allie Jackson of Durango, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 11:00 am on October 14 in Bandon at their old home on Gould Ave. A Marjorie June Reed "Best Friend" scholarship fund is being organized and will be available for contributions later.

Charles (Chuck) R. Adams
ADAMS, Charles (Chuck) R., former manager of the Greater Roseburg Area Chamber of Commerce from 1964-1985, died Aug. 16th at his home in Glendale, CA. He was born in Rochelle, Louisiana, on Feb. 14, 1925, to Howard and Pearl Adams. When he was 17 he enlisted and served in the Navy during World War II. Upon his return to civilian life, he worked in retail management in Washington State, during which time he was married to Opal "Pat" Jewell. They were blessed with a family of three sons. In 1958 he became manager of the Chamber of Commerce in Camas, WA., and later in Kennewick, WA., until 1964 when he became director of the Roseburg Area Chamber of Commerce. He served in that capacity until 1985, at which time a serious illness forced him to resign. He and his wife moved to the Los Angles area to be near their son. After moving to California, he worked as an accountant for Wabjohn, Inc., a dental management firm. He continued to work until he became seriously ill again in late 1999. Chuck will be remembered for his warm, good humor, his strong work ethic, his patriotism, and his love for and commitment to his family. He is survived by his wife Opal "Pat", his sons Randy and his wife Rosalie of San Dimas, CA., Todd and his wife Glenda of Herriman, Utah, and Mark of Bend, OR, two grandchildren, Mathew and Cassandra, one brother, Bob Adams and wife Barbara of Longview, WA, one step granddaughter, three step great grandchildren, one niece, one nephew, two great nieces, and one great nephew. Funeral services were held at the Wee Kirk O'the Heather Chapel in Forest Lawn, Glendale, CA., with Pastor Frank Navarro officiating, assisted by Pastor Randy Adams. Sons, Randy, Todd, and Mark gave brief testimony of their love and respect for their father. A Naval and American Legion Honor Guard participated in the interment at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, CA.

Joseph George Ellis Bruner
BRUNER, Joseph George Ellis - Age 75, went to be with the Lord and Savior, on August 30, 2000. After a long struggle with cancer, he passed away at the VA Hospital. Joseph was known to many as "Indian Joe". He was born to William and Thelma Bruner in Salina, Oklahoma on March 8, 1925. Joseph was lone of the last survivors to have a father who was in the Spanish-American War. His father was also a chief in the Creek Indian tribe. At age 18, Joseph joined the Navy and was a machinists mate (CB) third class. He received a W.W.II victory medal and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal. He was also a boxer in the Navy and won a championship. Joseph was a retired barber, logger and construction worker. During those jobs, he worked in Washington, Idaho and Oregon. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and American Legion. Joseph attended Church of God in Riddle, Oregon. Then he later moved to Roseburg and attended Faith Tabernacle when he was able. His favorite hobbies included going to the rodeo, coast trips, hunting and attending his grandchildrens' sports activities. One of his favorite past times was telling old stories at family gatherings among family and friends. Indian Joe never new a stranger, nor did he ever pass up a home cooked meal, especially one prepared by his favorite cook, "Chef Steven". Mary Lou Bruner, wife of 32 years preceded Joseph in death on September 24, 1998. Survivors include sister, Billie Speck, Oklahoma, brother Pete Jameson, Idaho; sons, Bruce Sneed, Bill Bruner, Bobbie Bruner, all of California; daughters, Jolene Bruner, Chelan Ferguson and Steve Depalma, Nena and Mike Bryant, and Konnie Bruner all of Oregon; grandchildren, Gabe and Danielle Forney; Kandis, Jessica, and Angela Bryant; Joseph and Alicia Bruner, very special great grandchild, Deshawn Perish. We love you dad and grandpa, you'll be greatly missed by all who knew you and we'll see you in heaven someday. Funeral service Monday, September 4, 2000 at 2:00 with Pastor Charles Snyder, at Chapel of the Roses on Harvard. Viewing will be held from 8-1 before service. Anyone wishing to send flowers please do so on or before Saturday, due to the holiday. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Joseph Bruner to the VA hospital in Roseburg, Oregon.

Marie C. Henson
HENSON, Marie C. - Age 70, formerly of Winston, passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2000 in Florida. She was born March 26, 1930 in Boston Massachusetts, daughter of Anthony and Mary (Taurausi) Carpento. Her mother died at childbirth and Marie was raised by her aunt in Exeter, Pennsylvania. She entered the U.S. Army to serve our country and was stationed in Germany. She moved to Oregon to be near her daughter. She was a member of the D.A. V. and she volunteered with the hospice program at the V.A. Hospital in Florida. Marie was a member of the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in St. Petersburg, Florida with her focus being on God and her family. She is survived by: her children, Darlene Dantone of Wilkes Barre, PA, Gary and Suzanne Moore of Roseburg, Lois Wells of Conrad, MT, Robert Henson of Laftin, PA, grandchildren include: Michael and Roxanne Dantone, Jason and Phillip Meisner, Melisa Andrews, James Moore, Christine and Robert Wells, Jeannie Henson, great grandchildren include, Malia Andrews and Ariana Housel. Private family services will be held at a later date. Local arrangements are under the direction of TAYLOR'S FAMILY MORTUARY.

Allen Mozorosky
MOZOROSKY, Allen - age 68, a resident of Roseburg, passed away September 12, 2000 at his home. He was born January 7, 1932 in Portland, Oregon to parents Hymie & Evelyn (Burda) Mozorosky. Allen graduated from Benson Poly High School and entered the U.S. Airforce where he served for four years. In 1955, Allen moved to the Los Angles area where he subsequently graduated from California state University. He was united in marriage in 1974 to his wife Rhoda Marcus. Allen was an avid tennis player. He had a deep interest in misinformation in the media centered in education and social issues, writing to journalists. Mr. Mozorosky worked as labor market analyst for the State of California. In 1986, Allen and Rhoda moved to Roseburg, Oregon. Allen's dry sense of humor even during the last days of his battle with cancer cheered his family and friends. Survivors include wife Rhoda, son Todd, sister Rose-Adele Cogan and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Memorial Rose Gardens located at the Veterans Hospital in Roseburg at 11:30 am, Sunday morning on September 17, 2000. Interment was held at Rose City Lodge Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions may be made to the Allen Mozorosky Jewish Cemetery Memorial Fund c/o Umpqua Valley Havurah, P.O. Box 5044, Roseburg, OR 97470.
