Alta Mae Shirk Good, 88, of New Holland, died Monday morning, July 10, 2006 at Ephrata Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry S. Good on March 24, 2006. She was born on April 6, 1918 in Earl Twp., the daughter of the late John Franklin and Barbara (Sensenig) Shirk. A homemaker, she was a member of the Hinkletown Mennonite Church. She enjoyed quilting, traveling, playing games, her family and family activities. Surviving are her eight children: Ruth E. marriage to James E. Yoder, Intercourse; Kenneth L. marriage to Mildred (Polus) Good, Brownsburg, IN; Donald E. marriage to Linda (Moore) Good, Akron; Joyce E. McFadden, New Holland; Carol A. marriage to John I. Groff, Ephrata; Marlin R. marriage to Jane (Unruh) Good, New Holland; J. Michael marriage to Karen (Armstrong) Good, New Holland; H. Leonard marriage to Jean (Weber) Good, New Holland; 18 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; a sister Elmira S. Snader, Lititz and a brother, Paul S. marriage to Anna (Rhoads) Shirk, Manheim. She was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Mary Binkley and three brothers: Leroy S., Harvey S. and Walter S. Shirk. Her funeral will be held on Friday, July 14, 2006 at 10 AM at the Hinkletown Mennonite Church with Pastor Glenn E. Sauder, Pastor Jeffrey S. Horst and Deacon Albert Kunkle, and Rev. Warren S. Good officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining church Cemetery. A viewing will be held at the Groff-High Funeral Home, 145 W. Main St., New Holland on Thursday from 6 to 9 PM and at the church on Friday from 9 to 10 AM. If desired, memorials may be sent to Mennonite Central Committee, P. O. Box 500, Akron, PA 17501.

Lois Grosh Shand
2006-07-13
Lois Grosh Shand, 79, formerly of Lancaster and West Chester, died Thursday, July 13, 2006 at Harrison House of Christiana, where she had resided for 14 years. She was the daughter of the late Earl Brandt Grosh and Dorothy Livingston Grosh. Born in Lancaster, Mrs. Shand’s family relocated to Berkeley, California in 1930. She was a graduate of Berkeley High School and attended University of Colorado as well as University of California at Berkeley. She returned to Lancaster in 1951. She was an active community volunteer, a proficient artist and cook, and enjoyed music, reading, and entertaining. Mrs. Shand was a trustee of Rock Ford Foundation, where she also served as Treasurer and Chairwoman of their antique series. She was a Director of Lancaster County Society for Crippled Children and Adults, now known as Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center. She was Chairwoman for the clothing bank sponsored by Lancaster County Council of Churches and was a member of the Executive Committee for the campaign to build the Lancaster County Health and Welfare Building, on the site of the former Rossmere Sanitarium in Manheim Township. She also served on the Parents Council of Lancaster Country Day School. In 1971, Mrs. Shand was the subject of a one-artist art show held at the former Marion Art Gallery. The show featured 25 of her original oil paintings. A highlight of her lifelong interest in cooking was the opportunity to train under renowned chef James Beard at a private seven-day course held in Lancaster in 1963. Mrs. Shand is survived by two sons, James Shand, Jr., husband of Zemma S. Shand, Lancaster, and Douglas G. Shand, husband of Susanne W. Shand, Lancaster; seven grandchildren; and a brother, Dr. John L. Grosh, Willow Street. A memorial service for Mrs. Shand will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 140 E. Orange Street, Lancaster, on Wednesday, July 19 at 11:00 a.m. Friends are invited to meet the family from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be private. Dorothy A. Martin
2006-07-19
Dorothy A. Martin, 89, of 433 S. Kinzer Ave, New Holland, formerly of Bechtelsville, PA, died Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at Garden Spot Village, New Holland. Born in Paradise, Twp., she was the daughter of the late Maurice and Maude (Keneagy) Denlinger. Her husband, Henry M. Martin, died Feb. 9, 2005. She co-owned with her husband, Martins Stone Quarry, Inc. in Bechtelsville for 45 years until their retirement. She was an active member of the Bally Mennonite Church where she was involved in the sewing circle and taught Sunday school and Bible school. She was currently attending New Holland Mennonite Church. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels in Boyertown, and Pottstown Hospital and continued to make Afghans for MCC, enjoyed gardening, and entertaining guests in her home. Surviving are five sons, Glenn, marriage to Rose (Hackman) Martin of Barto, Thomas, marriage to Lois (Bisbort) Martin of Boyertown, Nelson, marriage to Evelyn (Kreider) Martin of Sellersville, David, marriage to Sandra (Shane) Martin of Long Beach Island, NJ, and Fred, marriage to Myrna (Gingerich) Martin of Colorado Springs, CO; a daughter, Ruth Ann, marriage to Steven Mininger of Sod, WV; 18 grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and a sister, Arlene Denlinger of Lancaster. Preceding her in death is a great granddaughter, Elizabeth Rose Stoltzfus; and a daughter-in-law, Judith (Martin) Martin. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 23 at 2 pm at Bally Mennonite Church, 1481 Route 100, Bally, PA with the Reverend James Ralph and the Reverend James Longacre officiating. Interment will be in the Bally Mennonite Cemetery. Viewing will be held on Saturday from 6-8 pm at Garden Spot Village Chapel, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland and also on Sunday from 1-2 pm at the Church. Kindly omit flowers. Contributions may be made in her memory to Mennonite Central Committee, 21 S. 12th St., Akron, PA 17501. Flavol F. Leath

Flavol F. Leath, 81, of Narvon, PA, formerly of 5401 E. 10th St., Indianapolis, died Monday, July 24, 2006 at Zerbe Sisters Nursing Center, Narvon, PA. Born in Indianapolis, he was the son of the late Flavol and Opal (Mitchell) Leath. His wife, Patricia Taylor Leath died August 10, 2004. Mr. Leath worked 42 years as a pressman for the Indianapolis Star. He was a member of the Pine Grove Church, Bowmansville, PA. During WWII he served in the US Army. Surviving are a daughter, Lucinda Leath of Indianapolis; and two sons, Wesley Leath of Johnstown, OH, and Jeffrey Leath of Denver, PA; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Marian B. Zimmerman

Marian B. Zimmerman, 71, of 635 E. Farmersville Road, New Holland, died Saturday, July 29, 2006 at her home after a lengthy illness. Born in East Earl, Twp. She was the daughter of the late Paul W. and Mary M. (Brendle) Weaver. She celebrated her 45th wedding anniversary on Jan. 1 to Amos H. Zimmerman. She was a homemaker and a member of the Hinkletown Mennonite Church where she was active in the sewing circle and served as past president. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren. Surviving in addition to her husband are four sons, Jay E., marriage to Melanie A. (Mast) Zimmerman of Terre Hill, Lee E., marriage to Janet L. (Zimmerman) Zimmerman of Akron, Lynford S. Zimmerman of Fivepointville, and Mark A., marriage to Tammy S. (Schulze) Zimmerman of Bowmansville; a daughter, LouAnn, marriage to Jonathan A. Showalter of Denver; 14 grandchildren; a brother, Lester B., marriage to Molly B. (Himmelreich) Weaver of Ronks; and a sister, Shirley B., marriage to Edward N. Martin of New Holland. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 2 at 10 am at the Hinkletown Mennonite Church, 2031 Division Hwy., Ephrata, with the Reverend Glenn Sauder, the Reverend Jerold Martin and the Reverend Gerald Fox officiating. Interment in adjoining Cemetery. Viewing will be held at the church on Tuesday 6-8 pm and on Wednesday 9-10 am. Shirley J. (Graves) Shirk Miller

Shirley J. (Graves) Shirk Miller, 62, of 3178 Thornapple Dr., Lancaster, died Monday, April 9, 2007 at Hospice of Lancaster County. Born in Hampton, VA, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Olive (Rishel) Graves. Shirley graduated in 1965 from the former Riverside Hospital School of Professional Nursing in Newport News, VA. During her nursing career which spanned 37 years, she worked as a pediatric and Medical/surgical nurse at the Ephrata Community Hospital and as an Emergency Room nurse at Community Hospital of Lancaster and Lancaster General Hospital. She was also a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, working with several attorneys in the Lancaster area. In addition, she enjoyed being a homemaker, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of the New Life Assembly of God Church, Lancaster. Her passions in life were genealogy, gardening, reading, and her grandchildren. Surviving her are her children: David A. Shirk, San Rafael, CA; Douglas W. Shirk, Windsor, PA; W. Dennis Shirk, Mt. Joy, PA; and Kimberly (Shirk) Miller, Mountville; five grandchildren: Joey Shirk, Matthew Shirk, Stephanie Shirk, Ian Shirk, and Aidan Miller; and two brothers: Larry F. Graves and William A. Graves, Jr., both of Gloucester, VA. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 at 10 AM at the New Life Assembly of God Church, 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster with Pastor Chris Foster officiating. Entombment will be in Conestoga Memorial Park. A viewing will be held at the church on Tuesday (TONIGHT) from 6 to 8 PM. Elizabeth W. "Betty" Brown

Elizabeth W. 'Betty' Brown, 95, of Cornwall, formerly of New Holland, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Brown in 1983. Born in New Holland, she was the daughter of the late F. Lacey and Gertrude (Stauffer) Wright. She had been the head teller at the former New Holland Farmers National Bank until her retirement in 1966 after 30 years of service. She was a member of the New Holland United Methodist Church where she served as an organist for 30 years, as the treasurer and financial secretary. She had also formerly been a member of the B.P.W. of New Holland. She held a strong interest in New Holland history and in quilting. Betty was preceded in death by a brother, Frank L. Wright. Her funeral will be held on Monday, April 9, 2007 at 2 PM at the New Holland United Methodist Church, 120 W. Main St., New Holland with Pastor Susan Sliker officiating. Interment will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. A viewing will be held at the church on Monday from 1 to 2 PM. Kindly omit flowers.
