Millie (Maxim) Gallo, of Rego Park, N.Y., died Sunday at her home.

Born in Duryea, she was a daughter of the late Dominick and Agatha (Rice) Maxim.

She was educated in Duryea schools.

She wass preceded in death by her brother, Albert Maxim; and sister, Anna Mae Maxim.

Surviving are her brother, Joseph Maxim, Rome, N.Y.; sisters, Estelle Maxim, Old Forge; Rochelle Glover, with whom she resided; Eleanor Campbell, Brookkyn, N.Y.; and Elizabeth Whalem, Long Island, N.Y.; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday from the Bernard J. Piontek Funeral Home Inc., 204 Main St., Duryea, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Duryea.

Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Duryea.

Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday.

Golembeski, Michael
January 29, 2001
Michael A. Golembeski, formerly of Dupont, died Monday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Born in Dupont, he was a son of the late Lottie Golembeski.

He was past owner of the Eidleweiss Restaurant and Michael's Timberline Ski Shop.

Surviving are his daughter, Andrea T. Ostrom, Somerset, N.J.; son, Michael C., South Bound Brook, N.J.; sister, Janice Adamchick, Dupont.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday from the Stephen M. Lokuta Funeral Home, 200 Wyoming Ave., Dupont.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Kasper, Bernard
January 9, 2001
Bernard L. Kasper, of Detroit, Mich., died Jan. 9 in Westland, Mich.

Born Jan. 31, 1924, in Edwardsville, he was a son of the late Lawrence and Anna (Janiec) Kasper.

He was a graduate of Edwardsville High School and Bucknell Junior College.

He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, serving as a power plant specialist based on Tinian Island in the Pacific.

He was a contract administrator for the U.S. Army Defense and Finance Division, Detroit.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 797, Edwardsville.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Nellie, Sophie and Florence; and brothers, Walter, Benjamin and Edward.

Surviving are his daughters, Maryann Born, Taylor, Mich.; Diane, Norfolk, Va.; Susan Hengesbaugh, Westland, Mich.; and Lena Riemerama, Zeeland, Mich.; five grandchildren; sisters, Wanda Mayko, Binghamton, N.Y.; and Rita, Larksville; brother, Emil, Edwardsville; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were from the Lesney & Son Funeral Home, Dearborn, Mich.

Interment was in the Fort Custer Memorial Cemetery, Battle Creek, Mich.

Kenworthy, Paul
January 30, 2001
Paul James Kenworthy, 83, of Clarks Summit, died Tuesday at Community Medical Center, Scranton, after a brief illness.

Born Dec. 16, 1917, in Carbondale, he was a son of the late Paul and Jane

(Addley) Kenworthy.

He was a graduate of Carbondale High School and earned an associate degree in business administration from the University of Scranton.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was a safety investigator and district supervisor for the Interstate Commerce Commission, and director of safety at DeFazzio Trucking Co., Moosic.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Roman Catholic Church, Clarks Summit, and its Men's Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Dorothy Raub; and sister, Bernice Kenworthy.

Surviving are his daughters, Lynne Bott, Millington, N.J.; Jane Ellis, Uniondale; Jean Giavedoni, Oakland, N.J.; sons, Charles, Hunlock Creek; and John, Clarks Summit; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from the Jennings-Calvey Funeral Home Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Snows Church.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Kitlinski, Felix
January 29, 2001
Felix Kitlinski, 76, of Susquehanna Township, a native of Nanticoke, died Monday at Holy Spirit Hospital.

He was a graduate of Pennsylvania State College.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, the first American soldier to cross the Siegfried line during the invasion of Germany, and a recipient of Bronze and Silver stars.

He was a consulting geotechnical engineer, and president and co-founder of F.T. Kitlinski & Associates Inc. and Foundation Services Co.

He was a member of the Pennsylvania and National Societies of Professional Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy Carson; sons, Philip C., Halifax; and Blair C., Harrisburg; daughter, Kaye C., Stockholm, Sweden; sisters, Theodosia and Lucia Baran, both of Nanticoke; and one granddaughter.

Memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Paxton United Methodist Church, Susquehanna Township.

Interment will be in Shumway Hill Cemetery, Wellsboro.

Arrangements are by the Geigle Funeral Home, Susquehanna Township.

Memorial donations may be made to the Paxton United Methodist Church, 3550 N. Progress Ave., Harrisburg, 17110.

McMinn, Rev. Stanley W.
January 30, 2001
The Rev. Stanley W. McMinn, 59, of East Walnut Street, Hazleton, died Tuesday at his home after a long illness.

Born March 10, 1941, in Coatesville, he was a son of the late William E. McMinn and Marie G. (Franklin) McMinn Newswanger, Coatesville.

He was a graduate of the Goldey Beacom School of Business, Wilmington, Del., and Baptist Bible College, Clarks Summit.

He was a new car dealer service manager at several local dealerships before becoming pastor of Grace Baptist Church, Hazleton. As a pastor, he dramatically increased the size of the congregation, expanded the church building and added a second Sunday morning worship service.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 40 years, the former Carole Ann Simpson; sons, Robert, Dalton; Rev. William, Jefferson, Ohio; Michael, Clarks Summit; and Steven, Hazleton; nine grandchildren; and brother, Paul, Coatesville.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the auditorium of the Grace Baptist Church, Samuels Avenue and East Street, Hazleton Heights, with the Rev. Joseph Schloegel of the Baptist Bible College officiating.

Interment will be in St. Johns Cemetery, St. Johns.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 11 a.m. until service time at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Grace Baptist Church, 380 East St., Hazleton, Pa. 18201.

Arrangements are by the Krapf and Hughes Funeral Home Inc., Hazleton.

Owens Sr., David
January 31, 2001
David J. Owens Sr., 77, of Manheim, died Wednesday at Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late David and Elizabeth (Bittenbender) Owens.

He worked for Unisys in Blue Bell.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Elizabeth Stevens; and sister, Anne Fehlinger.

Surviving are his wife, the former Patricia Millhouse; son, David J. Jr., Ocean View, N.J.; daughter, Marilyn A. Bradley, Lancaster; stepdaughters, Linda Holaday, New Castle, Ind.; Patrice Reeds, Roseville, Calif.; and Kathy Rasmussen, Peris, Calif.; four granddaughters; five stepgranddaughters; one great-granddaughter; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and sisters, Elizabeth Hildebrand, West Wyoming; Malvina Lewis, Kingston; and Sarah Reilly, Dallas.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday in Hanover Green Cemetery Chapel, 689 Main Road, Hanover Township.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church, 532 Lebanon Road, P.O. Box 233, Manheim, Pa. 17545, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements are by the Buch Funeral Home, Manheim.

Pennington, Theodore
January 30, 2001
Theodore A. Pennington, 61, of Pritchards Road, Hunlock Creek, died Tuesday at his home.

Born in Huntington Mills, he was a son of Miltona (Anderson) Pennington and the late John W. Pennington.

He was a 1957 graduate of Northwest Area High School.

He was a pipe fitter with the Pipe Fitters Union Local 524, Scranton.

He was a member of Sylvania Lodge 354 F&AM, Shickshinny.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, the former Deborah Williams; sons, Brian Pennington, Shickshinny; and Jamie and Joshua Taney, both of Wapwallopen; daughters, Aubray Reese, Shickshinny; Kelly Pennington, Bangor, Maine; Kelly Cresci, Town Hill; and Cody Taney, Wapwallopen; sister, Lydia Lydia Lydecker, Paterson, N.J.; and Irene Krothe, Shickshinny; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Charles L. Cease Funeral Home, 634 Reyburn Road, Shickshinny, with the Rev. Richard Metcalf of the Bloomingdale Bible Church officiating.

Friends may call from noon until service time Saturday.

Polto, Daniel
January 27, 2001
Daniel J. Polto, 71, of Brook Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Saturday in Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born July 16, 1929, in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Daniel and Esther (Mastristefano) Polto.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and served as a military policeman in Germany.

He worked for Bridon American Corp., Hanover Township Industrial Park.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph and Alfred Polto; and sister Bertha Ceppa.

Surviving are his wife, the former Sonnah Appel; daughter, Karen Polto, Wilkes-Barre; sister Mary Minetola, Hanover Township; and nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services were from the Bednarski Funeral Home, 27 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Schiefer, Edward
January 31, 2001
Edward A. Schiefer, 63, of RR 2, Paxinos, formerly of Mountaintop, died Wednesday at Bloomsburg Hospital after an illness.

Born May 20, 1937, in Nuremberg, he was a son of Edward L. and Bertha (Nicolodi) Schiefer, Nuremberg.

He was a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy with a bachelor of science degree in engineering.

He was a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Naval Reserves.

He was a plant manager for Foster Wheeler Corp, Marion Heights.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Nuremberg.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, the former Catherine Teter; son, Edward G., Washington, D.C.; daughters, Jennifer Schiefer, Panama City Beach, Fla.; Victoria Sailer, Camp Hill; Lisa East, San Diego, Calif.; and Kristina Skiro, Mountaintop; brother, Douglas, Carlisle; sisters, Eleanor Buchman, Nuremberg; and Florence Matthews, Troy; and four grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Church, Nuremberg, with the Rev. Patrick McDowell officiating.

Interment will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Zion Grove.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross, 21 N. Church St., Hazleton, Pa. 18201.

Whitebread, Homer
January 30, 2001
Homer T. Whitebread, 93, of Hobbie, died Tuesday at the Orangeville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born March 20, 1907, in Hobbie, he was a son of the late Amsey and Cora (Moyer) Whitebread.

He drove trucks for Roy Benjamin, Lumberman, and operated the family farm.

He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Hobbie, where he served on church council, the Farmers Dairy, Hazleton, and the former Mechanics Lodge, Hobbie, and a school director for the former Hollenback Township school system.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Bessie Moyer; son, Elwood; and brother, Oscar.

Surviving are his sons, Claude, Hobbie; and George, Berwick; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson.

Private funeral services will be from the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck.

Interment will be in St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Hobbie.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the memorial fund of the church, RR 2, Box 57, Wapwallopen, Pa. 18660.

Zapusek, Bernard
January 31, 2001
Bernard C. Zapusek, of Bennett Street, Luzerne, died Wednesday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Luzerne, he was a son of the late Charles and Louise (Mussel) Zapusek.

He attended Lake-Lehman schools.

He worked as a coal miner for the Glenn Nann Coal Co., Wanamie.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Rose Petrishin and Irene Tomsac; and brothers, Joseph, Willard, Carl and Donald.

Surviving are his son, Bernard, Apache Junction, Ariz.; daughter Barbara Fenner, Hunlock Creek; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Caroline Kazer, Clifton, N.J.; Marie Mezenko, Garfield, N.J.; Lorraine Petrishin, Huntington Mills; brother Norman Zapusek, Mountaintop; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Betz-Jastremski Funeral Home, Inc., 568 Bennett St., Luzerne, with the Rev. Louis Falcone officiating.

Interment will be in Fern Knoll Burial Park, Dallas.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today.
