Peter J. Montante, 76, of Largo, Fla., died Wednesday at Sable Palms, Largo.

Born Oct. 14, 1925 in Pittston, he was a son of the late Cologero and Maria (Scamacca) Montante. He was a graduate of Pittston High School. He lived 30 years in the Buffalo, N.Y., area and in Largo for the last 13 years. He worked for the Postal Service, Kenmore, Buffalo. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a gunner in the South Pacific Theater. He was a member of Catherine of Sienna Roman Catholic Church, Clearwater, Fla., and the Loyal Order of the Moose, Largo.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Angelo, Dr. Raymond and Joseph; and sisters, Josephine, Theresa and Connie.

Surviving are his wife, Theresa Claire (Herron) Montante; son, Charles, Buffalo; and sister, Angeline Barrille, Buffalo.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Graziano Funeral Home Inc., 700 Pittston Blvd., Pittston Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Rocco's Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be in West Pittston Cemetery, West Pittston. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

DePhillips, Eleanor

Eleanor C. DePhillips, 78, of Pittston, died Thursday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Born Dec. 25, 1923 in Pittston, she was a daughter of the late Rosario and Concetta (DeGraba) Mastruzzo. She was a graduate of Pittston High School. She was a life resident of Pittston. She worked in the area garment industry. She was a member of St. Rocco's Roman Catholic Church, Pittston.

Ross, Thelma

Thelma V. Ross, 83, of Luzerne, formerly of Noxen, died Thursday at ManorCare Health Services, Kingston.

Born May 3, 1918 in Noxen, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Bertha (Carpenter) Scouten. She attended Noxen schools. She was a seamstress in many local dress factories. She was a member of the Noxen United Methodist Church and the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles, Granville, Welford, Guy, Theodore, James and Floyd; and sisters, Mildred Weber, Sylvia Shappert and May Reese.

Surviving are her daughter, Shirley Stesney, Swoyersville; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Myrle Ritchie, Florida; brother, Carl, Houtzdale; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be private. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Nulton Funeral Home, state Route 309, Beaumont.

Helen Rowett, of Courtdale Avenue, Courtdale, died Friday at the Hospice Care of the VNA at Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre. Born in Edwardsville, she was a daughter of the~ late Ignatius and Stephania (Beatoff) Pavill. She resided in Courtdale her entire life. She was worked for Duplan Silk Mill, Kingston, until retiring. She was a member of St. Mary's Annunciation Church, Kingston.

Keating Sr., James

James A~. Keating Sr., 65, of Murray Street, Forty Fort, died Friday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of Victoria (Iorio) Keating, of Wilkes-Barre. He resided in Forty Fort for the past 38 years. He was a graduate of Meyers High School, Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County Community College and later attended Wilkes University. He was a packing engineer for Topps Chewing Gum Co., Duryea, for 30 years, before retiring. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry. He was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Swoyersville.

Kravitz, Joseph

Joseph D. Kravitz, 80, of Loyalville, died Thursday at Dorrance Manor, Kingston.

Born in Larksville, he was a son of the late Joseph J. and Catherine (Blazik) Kravitz. He attended the Larksville schools. Before retiring, he was a dye and chemical mixer for the former Natona Mills, Dallas. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Lake Silkworth, George M. Dallas Lodge 531 F&AM, Keystone Consistory, Scranton, Irem Temple, Wilkes-Barre, and its Oriental Band and also Daddow Isaacs American Legion Post 672, Dallas, where he was commander eight times. He also was past president of the Monday and Thursday Nights Bowling Leagues, Dallas, Local 1824 Textile Workers Union, and Keystone Joint Board Chapter of Unions, manager and treasurer of Natona Employees Federal Credit Union.

Surviving are his daughters, Rosemary, Dallas; and Carol Anne, Wilkes-Barre; and brothers, Albert E., Wilkes-Barre; Bernard W., Edwardsville; and Robert P., Hampton, Va.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family from the Richard H. Disque Funeral Home Inc., 672 Memorial Highway, Dallas, with Mass of Christian Burial at Gate of Heaven Church, Dallas. The Rev. John C. Lambert will officiate. Interment will be in Memorial Shrine Park, Carvertown, Franklin Township. There will be no calling hours.

Sarama, John

John J. Sarama, of New Port Richey, Fla., formerly of Nanticoke, died Thursday in New Port Richey.

Born Dec. 14, 1908 in Larksville, he was a son of the late Roman and Julia (Jayromos) Sarama. He worked at Chrysler Corp., Detroit, before retiring. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Julia Standora.

Surviving are his brother, Michael Kownacki, Florida; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday from the Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home, 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Monday.

Lukasik, Frances

Frances Lukasik, 79, formerly of Avoca, died Friday at the East Mountain Manor, Plains Township, where she was a resident for the past year. Born in Avoca, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Carolyn Dudzik. She was a graduate of Avoca High School. She last worked at Consolidated Cigar Factory, West Pittston. She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Church, Avoca. She wa~s preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; brothers, Michael, Stanley and Joseph; and sisters, Elizabeth, Mary, Anna and Helen.

Surviving are her sister, Carolyn Turel, Avoca; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Ruane & Regan Funeral Home, 1308 Grove St., Avoca, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at SS. Peter & Paul Church. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Moosic. Friends may call from 8 to 9 a.m. Monday.

McGinnis, Rosemary

Rosemary McGinnis, 84, of Fairview Township, died Friday at Davis Manor, Wright Township.

Born Nov. 23, 1917 in Fairview Township, she was a life-long resident of Mountaintop. She was a daughter of the late Edward and Rose McGahagan McGinnis. She attended Fairview High School and was a graduate of the Empire Beauty School, Wilkes-Barre. McGinnis was a self-employed beautician in Mountaintop for many years.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret; twin brother, Edward; and brother, John.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews, including Steven McGinnis, Fairview Township, with whom she had resided; great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday from the McCune Funeral Home, 80 South Mountain Blvd., Mountaintop, with the Rev. James McGahagan officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. There will be no calling hours.

Krill, Peter

Peter J. Krill, of Wilkes-Barre, formerly of Totowa, N.J., and Irishtown section of Plains Township, died Friday at the Riverstreet Manor, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Sept. 27, 1910 in the Irishtown section of Plains Township, he was a son of the late John and Anna (Jamo) Krill. He was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School. He worked for Englehard Metal Co., Newark, N.J., before retiring. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, serving as an airplane and engine mechanic. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Church, Little Falls, N.J.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Nicholas and Michael; and sister, Nettie Clark.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, the former Marie Sienkiewicz; sisters, Rose Markel, West Wyoming; and Mary Mau, Valley Forge; and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great great-nieces and great great-nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday from the Simon S. Russin Funeral Home Inc., 136 Maffett St., Plains Township, with Requiem services at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church, Miners Mills, Wilkes-Barre. Archpriest David Shewczyk, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton, Kingston Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Parastas services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, with Archpriest David Shewczyk officiating.

Shultz, Irene

Irene L. Shultz, of Delaware Avenue, West Pittston, died Thursday at Hospice Community Care at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Duryea, she was a daughter of the late John and Stella (Maszeroski) Resavy. She was a graduate of Duryea High School. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, West Pittston.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Joseph; son, Joseph J., Jr., Nunda, N.Y.; daughter, Jane E. Marsola, Dallas; seven grandchildren; and sister, Eleanor Kojtek, Duryea.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Recupero Funeral Home, 406 Susquehanna Ave., West Pittston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church. The Very Rev. Michael Piccola will officiate. Interment will be in St. Casimir's Cemetery, Pittston. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Community Care, 385 Wyoming Ave., Kingston, 18704.

Rogers, Charles

Charles H. Rogers, 82, of Plains Township, died Friday at Riverstreet Manor, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Plains Township, he was a son of the late Charles, Sr. and Anna (Doran) Rogers. He was a 1937 graduate of Sacred Heart High School, Plains Township and 1941 graduate of Scranton University. He worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains Township, in the X-ray department for 37 years, retiring in 1979. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Plains American Legion, Joseph E. Conlon Post 558 and the parish community of Sacred Heart/St. Joseph's Church, Plains Township.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, John and Donald; and sisters, Margaret Rogers, Rose Conway, Elizabeth Boyle and Catherine Farrell.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, the former Geraldine Loftus; sons, Dr. John, Plains Township; Charles, Pittston, administrator of Mercy Hospital Nursing Home, Scranton; attorney Donald, Wilkes-Barre; attorney Richard, Plains Township; 10 grandchildren, two great-granddaughters; brothers, John Doran, Plains Township; and Eugene Doran, Middletown.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Corcoran Funeral Home 20 S. Main St., Plains Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sacred Heart Church.

Querci, Anthony

Anthony Querci, 88, of Exeter, died Thursday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born June 13, 1913 in Swoyersville, he was a son of the late Ceasar and Nancy Querci. He owned and operated Querci's Garage and Auto Repair Shop since 1927. He was certified by Studebaker Motor Works in 1930. He retired in 1998. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of St. Cecilia's Church, Exeter, where he was an usher and member of its Holy Name Society.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Andrew and Charles; and sister, Amelia Ferretti.

Surviving are his wife, the former Virginia Meshinski; son, Lornecq Anthony; and two grandchildren.

Private calling hours will be held at the Howell-Lussi Funeral Home, 509 Wyoming Avenue West Pittston. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Cecilia's Church. The Rev. Daniel Hitchko will officiate. Interment will be at the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton, Kingston Township. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to St. Cecilia's Church, Wyoming Avenue, Exeter, 18643.

Rev. Edward Powers, The

The Rev. Edward R. Powers, SJ, 87, of St. Joseph's Villa, Flourtown, formerly of the Scranton area, died Friday in Flourtown. Born in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Edward and Margaret (Frey) Powers. He entered the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues, Wernersville, in February, 1933. He received a bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees from Boston College and licentiate in philosophy and sacred theology from Weston College, Massachusetts. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1945 by Bishop T.A. Emmet, SJ, and pronounced his final vows in the Society of Jesus Church on Feb. 2, 1950. He was assistant director of seismology at Georgetown University and was appointed Georgetown's physical plant administrator. In 1954, he helped the Jesuits establish Wheeling Jesuit College, Wheeling, W.Va., serving as buyer and treasurer. He was assistant professor of mathematics at The University of Scranton. She worked for Dr. William Rosensweig and later was a teacher associate for the Luzerne County Intermediate Unit. She resided in the Back Mountain for the past 42 years. Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of Patricia (Godown) Yale, Hudson, and the late George Yale. He attended Wilkes-Barre area schools. He worked on the maintenance staff of Pocono Downs, Plains Township, for more than 16 years. He was a member of Local 401, Teamsters Union, Wilkes-Barre.
