Vera J. Rhodes, 76, of Matson Avenue, Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born July 30, 1923, in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Tascione) Cardamone. She was a 1943 graduate of Coughlin High School, worked at death by her husband, Willard; granddaughter, Chelsey Lynn; sisters, Nellie Cardamone and Rose Burian; and brothers, Michael and James Cardamone.

Surviving are her daughter, Roxanne Czarniecki, Wilkes-Barre; son, Willard F., Wilkes-Barre; one grandson; sisters, Mamie Bisulca, Wilkes-Barre; and Mary Marko, Luzerne; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, 159 George Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Dominic's Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Powell, Florence

Florence M. Powell, 77, of Wilkes-Barre, formerly of the Heights section, died Tuesday at Summit Health Care Center, Wilkes-Barre, where she was a resident since May.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late William O. and Margaretta (Jones) Powell. She was a 1940 graduate of GAR High School, Wilkes-Barre, and was an office clerk with the General Cigar Co., Kingston. She was a member of the First Welsh Presbyterian Church, Wilkes-Barre, the choir and Sunday school, and the Cambrian Club, Wilkes-Barre.

Surviving are her sister, Alice J., Wilkes-Barre; with whom she had formerly resided; brother, William J., Richmond, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday from the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home, Inc., 451 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre. The Rev. George B. Johnson will officiate. Interment will be in Hanover Green Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 10 am. until time of service Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Welsh Presbyterian Church, Wilkes-Barre.

Povlick, Theodore
July 9, 2000
Theodore Povlick, 89, of North Sherman Street, Wilkes-Barre, formerly of Union, N.J., died Sunday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Peter and Mary (Segda) Povlick. He worked in Union, N.J., was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and member of Holy Cross Polish National Catholic Church, Wilkes-Barre.

Surviving are his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph, Walter and John; and sisters, Clara Woronko and Gerry Korus.

A Memorial Mass will be at a time to be announced at Holy Cross Church. Interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Arrangements will be by the Bomberger-Lesko Funeral Home, 1660 N. Main Ave., Scranton.

Okuniewski, Mary
July 11, 2000
Mary Okuniewski, of Frederick Street, Ashley, died Tuesday at the Mercy Health Care Center, Nanticoke.

Born in Dupont, she was a daughter of the late Ludwik and Rosalia (Zielinska) FeLong. She attended the Ashley schools, was a housewife and a member of Holy Family Church, Sugar Notch.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; son, Joseph; brother, John Fallon; and sisters, Clara Shimkowski and Anna Newman.

Surviving are her sons, Leonard, John and Edumund, all of Ashley; daughter, Jean Skupski, Ashley; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; brother, Stanley, South Pasadena, Calif.; sister, Jennie Owicki, Pasadena, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Joseph L. Wroblewski Funeral Home, 56 Ashley St., Ashley, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church. The Rev. John Terry will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to the Mercy Health Care Center, Nanticoke.

Mociun, Frances
July 17, 2000
Frances Mociun, of North Moreland Township, Tunkhannock, died Monday at the Meadows Nursing Home, Dallas.

Born Sept. 26, 1917, in Kingston, she was a daughter of the late Cyprian and Bertha (Sepawicz) Ponganis. She was a graduate of Kingston High School and worked at the Mercy Center of College Misericordia, Lori Dress Co. and Weaver's Market. She was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Center Moreland, Dallas/Falls Senior Citizen's Center and life member of the North Moreland Township Fire Co.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Raymond; son, Raymond, Center Moreland; one granddaughter; brother, Edward Ponganis, California; sister, Ann Novinski, California; and Helen Ponganis, Center Moreland; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Blanche Novinski; and brothers, John and Edward Ponganis.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton, Kingston Township. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Hirel, Anna

Anna Hirel, of Bretman Court, Edwardsville, died Monday at her residence.

Born April 5, 1922, in Swoyersville, she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Mary (Dyanick) Wright. She attended the city schools, worked at the Lori Charles Dress Factory, Luzerne, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Nurses Corps. She was awarded the American Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the WAAC Service Ribbon. She was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church and American Legion Post 395, both of Kingston.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel; and brothers, Anthony, Michael and Joseph Wright.

Surviving are her sons, John, Wilkes-Barre Township; Larry, Wilkes-Barre; and Daniel, Donaldson; three granddaughters; sister, Mary Talbott, Long Island, N.Y.; nieces and nephews.

A private funeral will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Bednarski Funeral Home, 27 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Requiem Service at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church. Father Theodore Krepp will officiate. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Pringle. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Silvi, John

John "Cy" Silvi, 62, of West Wyoming, died Monday at his home.

Born in Plains Township, he was the son of Lottie (Benczkowski) Silvi, Plains Township, and the late Sesto Silvi. He was a 1955 graduate of Sacred Heart High School, Plains Township, and was self-employed as a auto body repairman and car salesman. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Pittston, social member of the Dallas American Legion, Post 672, manager of the Exeter Lithuanian Club and head coach of their touch football team.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jackie; and grandson, Joseph Rubino.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Eileen; son, Jerome, Wyoming; daughters, Jane Marstell, Exeter; Mary Rubino, West Pittston; and Jill Silvi, Forty Fort; stepchildren, Kim Freeman and Alan Johnson, both of London, England; five grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren; sister, Cecelia Phillips, Plains Township; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 9:45 a.m. Thursday from the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 S. Main St., Plains Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Mount Carmel Church. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton, Kingston Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care of the VNA, Wilkes-Barre.

Evans, Jeannette

Jeannette J. Evans, 92, formerly of Plymouth, died Sunday at the Masonic Homes, Elizabethtown.

Born in Plymouth, she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Edith (Thomas) Jones. She was a graduate of Plymouth High School and Mansfield State College and member of the Pilgrim Congregational Church, Plymouth.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; and brothers, Phillip and John.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the William A. Reese Funeral Chapel, rear 56 Gaylord Ave., Plymouth, with the Rev. Edward Gospodinsky officiating. Interment will be in Fern Knoll Burial Park, Dallas. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service Thursday. Memorial donations may be made to Masonic Homes, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, 17022; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Goodwin, Edward
July 18, 2000
Edward P. Goodwin, of RR 1 Mehoopany, died Tuesday at his home.

Born Nov. 23, 1920, in Forkston Township, Wyoming County, he was a son of the late Charles and Nellie (Place) Goodwin. He was a dairy farmer and U.S. Marine Corps Veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Forkston Grange 1153, member and treasurer of the Forkston United Methodist Church and member of its Official Board. He was a president of the Forkston Cemetery Association, Mehoopany school board director and director of the Tunkhannock Area School District after their merger.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert; and sister, Elizabeth Day.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Ottie E. (Fassett) Goodwin; daughters, Patricia L. Vermeulen, Lovelton; and Ferne S. Aitken, Forkston; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; sister Avis Riley, Tunkhannock; and half brother, Warren, Forkston.

A Memorial Service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Forkston United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Catherine Parsons officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the Forkston United Methodist Church, c/o of Edith Goodwin, RR 2, Mehoopany, 18629; or the Forkston Cemetery Association, c/o Alice Denison, RR 2, Mehoopany, 18629. Rakich, John
July 18, 2000
John Rakich, 84, of Rakich Road, Sugarloaf Township, Benton, formerly of Luzerne, died Tuesday at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains Township, where he was a patient for six weeks.

Born in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late Frank and Anna (Mahan) Rakich. He was a caretaker of the former Benton dump and worked at the General Motors Corp., Buffalo, N.Y., and in the coal mines of Wyoming Valley. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 572nd Anti Aircraft Battalion. He was a member of St. John The Baptist Russian Orthodox Church, Edwardsville, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 283, Kingston, the Disabled American War Veterans Association and the 572nd Anti Aircraft Artillery Association.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, the former Alma Baglioni; sons, John S., Benton; Charles, Ninety Sixcq, S.C.; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and brother, Michael, Elmira, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home, Benton, with the Very Rev. Archpriest Michael Slovesko officiating. Interment will be in St. Gabriel's Cemetery, Sugarloaf Township. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Parastas services will be at 8 p.m. Thursday. The family will provide flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Wilkes-Barre.

Emerick, Walter
July 16, 2000
Walter Emerick, 25, of Harrison Street, Hazleton, died Sunday from injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash on Broad Street, West Hazleton.

Born in Hazleton, he was the son of Donald Emerick and the late Constance (Grier) Emerick. He was a 1993 graduate of Hazleton High School, member and past acolyte of Good Shepherd Church, Drums section of Butler Township.

Surviving, in addition to his father, are his sister, Heather, Freeland; stepbrother, Donald Eric, Wilkes-Barre; and numerous aunts and uncles and 46 cousins.

The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday from the Joseph B. Conahan Funeral Home, Inc., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Good Shepherd Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Wrick, Dorothy

Dorothy Wrick, 92, of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Kingston, died in Vero Beach, Fla.

She was a daughter of the late John and Alice Evans. She was a graduate of Kingston High School and Bloomsburg Teachers College and taught in Mount Pocono and Newton, N.J.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore.

Surviving are her sisters, Ruth R. Evans, Vero Beach, Fla.; and Alice Searfoss, Pittston; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were by the Strunk Funeral Home, 916 17th St., Vero Beach, Fla.

Barnes, Charles

Charles L. Barnes, 75, of Fairfield Glade, Tenn., formerly of Indiana, Huntsville and Lehman Township, died July 7 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville, Tenn.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Ernest and Marie (Piatt) Barnes. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving with the B-17 Squadron in the Pacific, and was a member of the International Union of Bricklayers.

Surviving are his wife, Erva Decker-Barnes; two granddaughters, two great-grandchildren; sisters, Janice Castellani, Trucksville; and Esther Johnson, Live Oak, Fla.; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Anna Sponseller; sons, James and John; daughter, Erva; and brothers, Sterling and Robert.

Services were held at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Fort Wayne, Ind. Entombment was in Highland Park Cemetery, Fort Wayne, Ind. Arrangements were by the D.O. McComb & Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, Fort Wayne, Ind. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn., 38105.

Leslie Sr., Kenneth

Kenneth A. Leslie Sr., 85, of Montrose Square Apartments, Montrose, formerly of East Lemon, died Tuesday at the Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock.

Born Aug. 23, 1914, in Montrose, he was a son of the late Frank, Sr., and Fannie (Robbins) Leslie. He owned and operated Leslie's General Store, East Lemon, and worked for the Chamberlain Plant, Scranton, and PennDOT, Tunkhannock.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Margaret Mislevy; four sisters, three brothers; son, Kenneth, Jr.; and daughter, Patty Lou Leslie.

Surviving are one grandson, one granddaughter, sister, Alberta Sprout, South Montrose; brother, Frank, Jr., Montrose; and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock. The Rev. Roger Richards will officiate. Interment will be in Montrose Cemetery, Montrose. Cremation will be at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory, Archbald.

Ash, Lester

Lester C. Ash, 79, of Mill Street, Benton, died Monday at the Orangeville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where he was a guest since June 30.

Born May 19, 1921, in Fishing Creek Township, he was a son of the late Oscar Charles and Bertha Durcella (Clewell) Ash. He attended the Crossroads School, Fishing Creek Township, Fishing Creek School, Orangeville and Berwick schools and farm training school in Huntington Mills. He was a 1940 graduate of Benton High School. He worked on the family farm and for the former Baker and Baker Store, Benton, and Bloomsburg State College security and maintenance department and hauled coal for the late Glen Dodson. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the EAME Theater Service Medal, with four Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a member, trustee and treasurer of the Asbury Methodist Church, member of the National Arbor Day Foundation and life member of Fort Ricketts Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Benton.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, the former Betty J. Laubach; Linda J. Robbins, Stillwater; Louise M. Fought, Orangeville RR 2; and Leslie J. Hess, Benton; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and brother, Earl F. Ash, Conyngham.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Victor.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Asbury United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Leon G. Scholl officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Fishing Creek Township. Military services will be conducted by the Benton Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the McMichael Funeral Home, 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton. Hudock, Thomas

Thomas J. Hudock, 80, of Largo, Fla., died July 11 in Largo.

Born in Larksville, he was the son of the late Anna Kwashnak and Andrew Hudock. He was a supervisor for the Public Utility Commission, Harrisburg, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Battle of the Bulge.

Surviving are his wife, the former Dolores Rockie; and several nieces and nephews.

Military funeral services were held by the Neill Funeral Home, Harrisburg. Interment was Monday in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

Marianelli, Judi
July 15
Jodi K. Marianelli, 56, of Old Forge, died Saturday at the Brotman Medical Center, Culver City, Calif.Born Aug. 16, 1943, in Duryea, she was the daughter of the late Mildred Moore (Dolan) Timinski and the late John Dolan. She was a graduate of the former Duryea High School, worked at the Topps Co., Duryea, and was a member of St. Mary's of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, Old Forge.
