Born in Everson, she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Helen Miller. She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Church, Plains Township.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony J.

Surviving are her sister, Genevieve Oshirak, Plains Township; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Saturday at a time to be announced from the Mark V. Yanaitis Funeral Home, 55 Stark St., Plains Township, with a funeral Mass at SS. Peter and Paul Church. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Plains Township. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Messmer, Joseph
Sept. 26, 2000
Joseph Messmer, of Dougher Lane, Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born June 27, 1918, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Conrad and Sophie (Shutz) Messmer. He was a graduate of St. Nicholas High School. He was a painter for the William Davis Painting Co., Wilkes-Barre. He was a life member of St. Nicholas Church, Wilkes-Barre.

He was preceded in death by his brother, John.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, the former Alice Bozek; son, Conrad, Seattle; and sister, Dorothy McThomas, Kingston.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Walter W. Lisman and Son Funeral Home, 233 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Maternity Cemetery, West Wyoming. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Mineo, Rita

Rita (Zurenda) Mineo, a resident of Valley Crest, Plains Township, formerly of Saylor Avenue, Plains Township, and Arlington, Va., died Tuesday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Exeter, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Sovchak) Zurenda. She was a graduate of Exeter High School and the Pittston School of Nursing. She was a school nurse for Exeter High School. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Slovak Catholic Union.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John G.; brothers, Nicholas, George and Joseph Zurenda; and sisters, Helen Yulis, Mamie Lyons and Sophie Davala. Surviving are her sisters, Dorothy Kleback, Florida; and Anna Simon, Nanticoke; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday from the Metcalfe and Shaver Funeral Home, Inc., 504 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Plains Township. Interment will be in St. John's Baptist Slovak Cemetery, Exeter. Friends may call from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Pradel, Linda

Linda Pradel, of Cherry Street, Duryea, died Wednesday at the East Mountain Manor, Plains Township.

Born in Duryea, she was the daughter of Martin, Jr., and Shirley (Collins) Webb. She was a 1976 graduate of Pittston Area High School. She was a nurses aide in Silver Care, Inc., Pittston Township.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Martin Webb.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her daughters, Jacqueline Slater and Amanda Pradel, both at home; and Jennifer Slater, Taylor; son, Jason Pradel, at home; stepsons, Joseph and Jared Pradel, West Pittston; three grandchildren; brother, Robert Webb, Duryea; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday from the Donnelly-Callahan Funeral Home, 802 Susquehanna Ave., West Pittston, with services at 11 a.m. at the Independent Bible Church, Main and Stephenson Streets, Duryea. Interment will be in Langcliffe Cemetery, Avoca. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Roman, Florence
Sept. 27, 2000
Florence V. Roman, 89, formerly of Laflin, Abbott Street, Plains Township, and Lehigh Valley, died Wednesday at Manor Care Health Services, Kingston, where she was a resident since 1996.

Born in Laflin, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Myrtle (Zilk) Davis. She attended Laflin schools. She was a legal secretary in the office of attorney Hyman, Wilkes-Barre. She was a member of Plains United Methodist Church, its choir, and the former Hudson Primitive Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Harry A.; and several brothers and sisters.

Surviving are her daughter, Carol Mills, Kingston; two grandchildren; brothers, Halfred Davis, Newark, N.J.; and Joseph Davis, Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday from the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home, Inc., 451 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Craig C. Gommer officiating. Private interment will be in Pittston Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of service Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Thomas, Charles

Charles Thomas, 72, of Second Street, Drifton, died Wednesday at home.

Born in Drifton, he was a son of the late Charles "Sport" and Rose (Cannon) Thomas. He was a graduate of MMI, Freeland, and attended Scranton University. He was a salesman for Pepsi-Cola and a maintenance worker for the Hazleton Area School District. He was a veteran with the U.S. Army Military Police. He served on the Democratic Committee and was a school director, both of Hazle Township. He was a member of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Freeland, Fearnots Volunteer Fire Co., Veterans of Foreign Wars of Freeland and White Haven, Jeddo Stars and Freeland Knights of Columbus. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 473, Drifton Fearnots AA and Freeland Son's of Erin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Anna "Nancy" Brogan; son, Charles; brother, Emmett; and sister, Rose Doloras Price.

Surviving are his son, Paul, Freeland; daughter, Mary Catherine Knapp, Sterling, Va.; two granddaughters, two grandsons; brother, James, Drifton; sisters, Irene Gallagher and Marie Fiest Smith, both of Drifton; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the McNulty Funeral Home, 407 Centre St., Freeland, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the parish Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The American Legion Post 473 will conduct services. Memorial donations may be made to Freeland American Legion Post 473 Youth Scholarship Fund, 725 Centre St., Freeland.

Tkacz, Katrina

Katrina Tkacz, 87, formerly of the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at Valley Crest, Plains Township, where she was a resident since 1988.

She was born Feb. 11, 1913, in Poland. She was a domestic on a farm in Hollenback Township.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning from the Stanley S. Stegura Funeral Home, Inc., 614 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Mary of Czestochowa Church, Nanticoke. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 8 a.m. until time of services Friday.

Wilson, Lureatha
Sept. 26, 2000
Lureatha May Wilson, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at Loudon Hospital, Leesburg, Va.

Born March 17, 1922, in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Sterling and Ruth (Hughes) Jones. She was a 1940 graduate of E.L. Meyers High School. She was a registered nurse for Elmwood Park School District, New Jersey. She was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of lieutenant. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Elmwood Park, N.J., and Order of the Eastern Star, Clifton, N.J.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Harold R.; son, Harold, Jr., Tampa, Fla.; daughter, Raelene Cavalieri, Sterling, Va.; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mamary-Durkin Funeral Service Corp., 59 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in Mount Greenwood Cemetery, Shavertown section of Kingston Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

Yatsko, Anna

Anna Yatsko, 89, of Noble Street, Nanticoke, died Tuesday at Birchwood Nursing Home, Nanticoke.

Born in Abrhamovce, Slovakia, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Anna Kutney. She was a member of ~St. Joseph's Church, Nanticoke, its Christian Women's Society, and the Slovak Heritage Society.

She wa~s preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; infa~nt son, Vincent; brother, John; sisters, Verna and Mary; and stepchildren, Adam, George, Mary, Betty and Thomas.

Surviving are her son, Jerome, Mountaintop; daughter, Dorothy Sullivan, Nanticoke; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; s~everal stepgrandchildren, several stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers, Andrew and George, Slovakia; and sister, Susan Tomko, Slovakia.

The funeral ~will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday from the Grontkowski Funeral Home P.C., 51-~53 W. Green St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church. The Rev. Leo Gardzalla will officiate. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Nanticoke. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.~ this evening.

Bruce A. Varner, of the Meeker section of Lehman Township, died Friday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Fulmer, Laura

Laura Rose Fulmer, 66, of Hanover Village, Wilkes-Barre, died Friday at the Temple of Continuous Care Center, Philadelphia.

Born July 8, 1934, in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late Edna and Anthony (Febee) Becker. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Tony.

Surviving are her sons, John, Wilkes-Barre; and Francis, Philadelphia; daughters, Sissy Fulmer Deulisse, Philadelphia; and Laura Fulmer Brady, Tennessee; 12 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; brothers, Tomascq and Steven Becker, both of Philadelphia; sisters, Patricia Becker Miller, Jewel Becker and Honey Becker Malluda, all of Philadelphia; and Sissy Becker, California; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were private and were held in Philadelphia. There was no viewing. Funeral arrangements were by the Dinan Funeral Home, Inc., 1921-23 Spring Garden St., Philadelphia.

Madl, Letha L.
September 29, 2000
Letha L. Madl, born Letha L. Welch, left us with broken wings and empty arms, this 29th day of September, 2000.

Born in Shickshinny Valley on July 27, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Horace and Liva McKeel Welch. She attended school in Shickshinny Valley and worked at Country Cousin Shoes, Mocanaqua, until retiring.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Horace, Kenny and Gaylord Welch; sisters, Mildred Welch, Maggie Gensel, Mary Piatt and Gertrude Garrison.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Leo George Madl Jr.; sons, Michael, Eric, Leopold, Christopher and Gordon Madl; daughters, Rose Wynnings, Ann Marie Meyer and Suzanna Zagata, all of Shickshinny; daughters-in-law and sons-in-law, Ned Wynnings, Shelly Madl, Patricia Madl, Lori Madl, Lisa Madl, John Meyer and Christian Zagata; grandchildren, John Michael and Dawn Zidek Jr., Jason Zidek, Gwen Dendler, Michael Madl Jr., Leatha, Erica and Patricia Madl, Barry Sult, Jessie and Kaysie Madl, Jordan Madl, Christian and Brandon Zagata and Kim Wynnings; great-grandchildren, Alycia Zidek, Alishia and Ashley Young, Seth Zidek and Austin Sult; sisters, Betty Johnston, Lancaster; and Joyce Massaker, Plymouth.

Our mother, grandmother, friend, angel has been taken from us, but we will not let her go. She cannot slip through our fingers or our hearts so easily. Her smile, her laughter, her heart can be seen in the faces of her children. We will remember her, seek her, hold her; we will never be without her, for a part of her remains, comforting our fears and drying our tears. We are with her on her journey home and are blessed with the peace of knowing that we will be with her once again some day.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Mayo Funeral Home, Inc., 77 N. Main St., Shickshinny, with the Rev. Thomas D. Skotek officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Mocanaqua.

Manganello, Anna Marie
September 27, 2000
Anna Marie (Cannella) Manganello, 80, of Windcrest, Texas, loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend, peacefully left this world on Sept. 27, 2000, in Compass Hospital after a long illness and complications of diabetes.

Mrs. Manganello was born June 7, 1920, in Pittston, the daughter of immigrant parents, Giuseppe Cannella and Anna Correnti, from Alessandria della Rocca, Agrigento, Sicily. She graduated in 1939 from Pittston High School and on Aug. 9, 1941, marriage Theodore A. Manganello, CW04, USAF (Ret.). As a military wife, she traveled the world, settling in San Antonio in 1964. She developed a large extended family of friends in more than 25 years of an illustrious Avon sales career. A great cook with a strong temperament, a quote in her high school yearbook described Anna's generous spirit: "Whenever a helping hand is needed, you will find Anna's outstretched."

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Ignacio, Vincenzo "Jimmy," Phillip, Tony and Joseph; sisters, Mary Cannella and Maria Guiseppa Cannella; and infant son, Joseph.

She is survived by brothers, Frank and Anthony Cannella; sisters, Josephine Cannella Knecht and Justina Cannella Tubioli, all of Pittston; brothers-in-law, John Manganello (Kay), of Bethlehem; Charles Manganello (Beverly), of Dallas; Dominick Rostock, of Exeter; and William Players (Clara Manganello), of West Pittston; sister-in-law, Marjorie Manganello, of Georgetown; Ill.; children, Charles Manganello (Wendy), of San Antonio, Texas; Patricia Manganello Fales (Dave), of Fairfax Station, Va.; Marian Manganello, of Brandon, Fla.; and James Manganello (Susan), of Anderson, S.C.; grandchildren, Deidre C. Fales, of Alexandria, Va.; Glen Manganello (Kimberly), of San Antonio; Eric Fales (Diana), of Richmond, Va.; Theodore Manganello, of San Antonio; Sabrina Clifton, of Brandon; Dru Alan Clifton, of Brandon; Matthew Manganello, of Anderson; and Mark Manganello, of Anderson; great-grandson, Dylan Patrick Fales, of Richmond; and several life long friends that will dearly miss her.

The family would like to express great appreciation for the loving care providers at Compass Hospital, Hearthstone Assisted Living in Windcrest, the staff at Northeast Dialysis Center and a special thank you to Dr. Nicolas Forero.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Glen Manganello, Eric Fales, Ted Manganello, Dru Clifton, Matthew Manganello and Mark Manganello. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home, followed by funeral services at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of Sunset Funeral Home, San Antonio. Private interment services will be held on Monday at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Gillis, Mary

Mary Gillis, 92, of Pittston, formerly of Hazleton, died Wednesday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born Nov. 20, 1907, in Fern Glen, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Anna (Poder) Visgaitis. She attended Hazleton area schools. She was a seamstress in Hazleton and Massachusetts and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church, Pittston.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael.

Surviving are her sons, Matthew Paul, Collings Lakes, N.J.; John Stanley, New Canaan, Conn.; and Alphosus Eugene, Levittown, N.Y.; 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Casimir's Parish Cemetery, Pittston. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Adonizio Funeral Home, 251 William St., Pittston. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sisters of Jesus Crucified, St. Mary's Villa, Elmhurst, 18416-0193.

Florence Hanaman, formerly of Barney Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at Hospice Community Care at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Nov. 19, 1910, in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Lena (Nute) Steadle. She attended St. Nicholas School. She worked for Sanitary Coat and Apron, Wilkes-Barre. She was a member of St. Nicholas Church, Wilkes-Barre.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph, Agustcq, and Martin Steadle; and sister, Marie Steadle.

The funeral will at 9:15 a.m. Friday from the Walter W. Lisman and Son Funeral Home, 233 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Church. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Shavertown section of Kingston Township. Friends may call from 8:45 a.m. until time of service Friday.

Harris III, Harry

Harry Kendall Harris III, 42, of Sussex Drive, Fayetteville, N.C., died Sunday at the Cape Fear Medical Center, Fayetteville.

Born in Junction City, Kan., he was the son of Teresa (Gilroy) Harris and the late Harry Kendall "Buddy" Harris Jr. He was a graduate of Fayetteville Technical Community College, Fayetteville. He worked for Black & Decker Co., Fayetteville.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his daughter, Victoria Lynn, Fayetteville; sister, Jeri Suarez, Fayetteville; brother, Douglas S., Sr., Fayetteville; five nieces, three nephews, and grandfather, Phil Wornovicz, Wilkes-Barre.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday from the James M. Desiderio Funeral Home, Inc., 2 Academy Road, Marion Terrace, Hanover Township. The Rev. Daniel Miller will officiate. Interment will be in Hanover Green Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening.

Haughney, Emmett

Emmett R. Haughney, 84, died Sept. 16 at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona, Fla.

Born Sept. 11, 1916, in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Patrick and Leah (Mitchell) Haughney. He was a graduate of Wilkes College, Wilkes-Barre. He was a conductor for Pennsylvania Railroad. He was the 38th District lieutenant governor for the Toastmasters International Organization and its preside~nt of the northeastern states. He was involved in scouting and was an umpire and coach for little league. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, member of the 320th Jolly Rogers bomb squadron, where he flew B-24 bombers in the Pacific, Dutch Philippines, East Indies and the China Coast. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion, fourth degree knight of Columbus and member of St. Brendan's Catholic Church, Ormond, Fla.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Martha; daughter, Katherine, Ormond Beach, Fla.; sons, Robert, Virginia; and Terrance, Texas; and two grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held at Brendan's Catholic Church on Sept. 20. Interment followed at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1510 Ridgewood Ave., Holly Hill, Fla., 32117. Arrangements were by the Ormond Funeral Home.
