Olexy, Attorney Joseph P. Esquire
Nov. 26, 2000
Attorney Joseph P. Olexy, 92, a native son of Plymouth and recently a resident of Wesley Village, Laflin, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born July 4, 1908, in Plymouth, he was the son of Alexander and Susanna Olexy, of Lyndwood. Attorney Olexy was graduated with honors from Plymouth High School in 1926, where he distinguished himself both in the classroom and on the athletic fields. In addition to graduating first in his class, he was chosen as senior class president, was president of the Ciceronian Literary Society and won the school oratorical contest in his senior ~year. In athletics, he was a member of the school football and baseball teams for three years. It was at football that Attorney Olexy particularly excelled, playing three different line positions during his three varsity years for the Shawnee Indians and serving as captain during his senior year. He was also chosen as a member of the Wyoming Valley All-Scholastic Team at the tackle position in 1926.

Attorney Olexy was awarded an academic scholarship to Harvard University following his high school career, but instead chose to attend the University of Pennsylvania, the alma mater of his beloved mentor and football coach at ~Plymouth, Dr. George R. Drake. He enrolled at Penn as a freshmen in the fall of 1926 with very little money and tried out for the Penn football team, which, in those days, was one of the Eastern football powerhouses, regularly drawing 70,000 to 80,000 fans to Franklin Field on a fall afternoon. Making the team was imperative to Olexy. Team membership guaranteed his daily meals at the Penn training table during the season and then a job at the training house during the off-season. After his freshman year, Attorney Olexy became one of the outstanding players of Penn football by starting at a different line position in each of his three varsity years, 1927-29. He was featured in a "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" cartoon as the "iron man" of Penn football in 1929. During his summer vacations, he worked in the mines with his father at the Truesdale Colliery in Hanover Township. He was graduated from the U. of P. in 1930 with an A.B., English, and from University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1933 (LL.B.). While completing undergraduate work, Attorney Olexy was a member of Theta Chi fraternity and also coached the freshman football team while still in law school. He was also chosen to be a member of the Friars' Honorary Society.

Following law school, Attorney Olexy was admitted to the practice of law in the courts of Luzerne County, the appellate courts of Pennsylvania and the Federal court system. In addition to holding down a private practice in Plymouth, Attorney Olexy was appointed to the post of Worker's Compensation Referee in 1937 by Gov. Arthur H. James. He served in this post until 1943, serving two years in the U.S. Navy and then resuming this position until 1956. When the referee's job became a civil service post in the 1970s, Attorney Olexy, approaching age 70, took the civil service exam and received the highest score in Lackawanna County for the referee's position in Scranton, a post which he filled for 10 years until his retirement in 1988.

During World War II, Attorney Olexy served in the United States Navy aboard a destroyer in the Pacific Theater from 1943 until his honorable discharge in December, 1945. As a full lieutenant in charge of radar operations on the USS Gregory, he participated in the battles for the islands of Eniwetok, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. It was at Okinawa that the Gregory was severely damaged by a Japanese kamikaze, but was able to make it back to San Diego at war's end.

Attorney Olexy was a member of Luzerne County Bar Association, the Wilkes-Barre Law & Library Association, Pennsylvania Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, a member and past president of the Plymouth Kiwanis Club, the Wyoming Valley Country Club and active in many community activities. He also served as solicitor to the Plymouth National Bank and the Plymouth Borough Council. Attorney Olexy was a member of the Church of Saint Vincent de Paul in Plymouth.

Attorney Olexy was also an avid golfer for many years and an accomplished violinist. As a youngster, he was taught the violin by his father, a coal miner, who also played at many local celebrations in the Lyndwood area. He was, for a time, a member of the Scranton Symphony in the late 1940s and enjoyed playing violin and viola in string quartets. In later years, he taught himself the cello well enough to fill in for an absent cello player in his string quartet.

He was preceded in death in May of this year, by his wife of 63 years, Mary (Rareshide) Olexy; his grandson, Josh Olexy, 1996; and his brother, Henry, 1994.

Surviving are his two sons, Joseph P. Olexy Jr., and his wife, Jean, of King of Prussia; Jon E. Olexy, and his wife, Dorian, of Lutherville, Md.; grandchildren, Lysbeth Kilcullen, Joseph P. Olexy III, Douglas Olexy, Bryn Olexy, Amy Olexy, Justin Olexy; two great-grandchildren, Hannah Olexy and Alexander Kilcullen; and sister, Emily Orbach.
