Dominick Concert, 67, of Silver Hill Road, Newark, N.Y., died Wednesday at Genesee Hospital, Rochester, N.Y.

Born May 2, 1933, in Pittston, he was the son of the late Angelo and Sadie Concert.

He was a steward with the Laborers Union #435, Rochester, for 22 years. He was the owner and operator of Dom's East Newark Bar and Grill since 1978.

He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Arcadia Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2883 and the August Mauer American Legion Post 286.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Swan Concert; sons, Michael, Newark; Ronald, Lyons, N.Y.; step children, Laurie VerStraete, Virginia; James Swan, Randleman, N.C.; Gerald Swan and Tracy Moag, both of Statesville, N.C.; Kimberly Swan, King Ferry, N.Y.; brother, Angelo Concert, Harveys Lake; sisters, Sally Emanuel, Dallas; Ann Marie Bealla, Plymouth; Rose Concert, Fort Myers, Fla.; Patricia Buscemi, Swoyersville; two grandchildren; and several step grandchildren.

Interment will be Wednesday in the East Newark Cemetery, Newark. Arrangements are by the Parker-Rayfield & Murphy Funeral Home, Newark.

Curry, Christopher
December 29, 2000

Christopher M. Curry, of South Meade Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Friday in Nesbitt Memorial Hospital, Kingston.

Born May 22, 1975, in Hazleton, he was the son of Richard P. and Diane Swetz Curry. He was a 1993 graduate of GAR Memorial High School.

He resided in the Wilkes-Barre area most of his life. He was employed by the Cornell Iron Works, Mountaintop, and was a member of Holy Trinity Church, 416 E. South St., Wilkes-Barre.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Anthony L. Swetz; and paternal grandfather, James P. Curry.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a sister, Elizabeth Curry, at home; maternal grandmother, Mary Ellen Swetz, Oneida; and paternal grandmother, Rita Curry, Ashley.

Private funeral services will be at the convenience of the family with a Memorial Mass in Holy Trinity Church. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by the Bednarski Funeral Home, 27 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre.

Favata, Kathryn
December 29, 2000

Kathryn Favata, formerly of Forty Fort, died Friday at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, Conn.

Born in Nanticoke, she was the daughter of the late David and Gertrude Wylie. She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, West Wyoming.

She and her late husband, Carl, owned and operated Carl's Pizza in Forty Fort. She was also employed by the Wyoming Seminary Lower School.

Surviving are her children, Tony, Westfield, Mass., with whom she resided; Kathy Holton, Elmira, N.Y.; Carla Janov, Edwardsville; sister, Joanie Maczuga, Hanover Township; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Hugh B. Hughes and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 1044 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Interment will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, West Nanticoke. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Hergert, Mary
December 24, 2000

Mary E. Hergert, 91, of Northampton Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Sunday in Summit Health Care, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Sept. 22, 1909, in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna Johnstone. She was a graduate of Hanover Township High School and received her master's degree from Bloomsburg University.

Before retiring in 1977, she was a teacher in the Keyport School District, New Jersey. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Wilkes-Barre, and the Grand Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick L. Hergert.

Surviving are her daughters, Johanna Stutz, Broadheadsville; Winifred Hergert, Wilkes-Barre; brother, Bill Johnstone, Milltown, N.J.; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be held at noon on Tuesday in Memorial Shrine Cemetery Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Robert M. Zanicky officiating. Arrangements are by Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 465 S. Main St., Wilkes-Barre.

Taber, Jay Cooke
December 30, 2000

Jay Cooke Taber, of Dimock, died Saturday at Berwick Hospital, Berwick.

Born July 20, 1909, in Oneonta, N.Y., he was the son of the late Henry Bull and Lillian Cooke Taber. He attended Oneonta public schools and Cornell University.

Before retiring, he was employed at Bendix Manufacturing Co. as a master mechanic. He was a member of the Free Masons, Sidney Lodge, New York, and the Amateur Ham Radio Operators of America.

He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Taber; sisters, Josephine Gode and Harriet Berg.

Surviving are his wife, Catherine Spencer Taber; son, Thomas Taber, Clifton, N.J.; brother, Joseph Taber, Hemet, Calif.; sister, Rachel Haughey, Naples, Fla.; one grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock.

Nocerini, Joseph
December 28, 2000

Joseph J. Nocerini, 94, of Boulevard Towers, Pittston, died Thursday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born March 19, 1906, in Pittston Township, he was the son of the late Giovanni and Colombia Amoni Nocerini. He was a life resident of Greater Pittston.

He was active as a musician during his youth and worked as a butcher in the grocery business in Pittston Township.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph, Albert and Fred Nocerini; and sister, Diane Ventre.

Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services will be Tuesday from the Graziano Funeral Home, Inc., 700 Township Blvd., Pittston Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church, Pittston. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Pittston. There will be no calling hours. Friends may attend Mass.

O'Donnell, Marie
December 29, 2000

Marie B. O'Donnell, 72, of Charles Street, Luzerne, died Friday at her home following a short illness.

Born in Luzerne, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Marie Wolinsky Juditz.

She attended Luzerne schools. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, formerly Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Luzerne.

Surviving are her husband, Raymond P. O'Donnell Sr.; son, Raymond P. O'Donnell Jr., Sayre; daughter, Kathleen Verbitski, Luzerne; brother, Michael Juditz, San Diego; and three grandchildren.

Marie decided to donate her body to Humanity Gifts Registry of Philadelphia. Arrangements are by the Betz-Jastremski Funeral Home, Inc., 568 Bennett St., Luzerne.

Okomski, Stanley
December 27, 2000

Stanley J. Okomski Jr., 40, of Newport Street, Sheatown, died Wednesday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born March 8, 1960, in Newark, N.J., he was the son of Stanley J. Okomski Sr. and the late Catherine D. Smela Okomski. He was educated in the Newark public schools.

Before moving to Sheatown in 1996, he was employed by the National Fuel Oil Co., Newark, N.J. He was a social member of the American Legion Post 350, Nanticoke, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5267, Hanover Township.

Surviving, in addition to his father, are a brother, Stephen, with whom he resided; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Stanley S. Stegura Funeral Home, Inc., 614 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church, Nanticoke. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Newport Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Paksywa, Joseph
December 29, 2000

Joseph (Pokrzywa) Paksywa, of Green Street, Edwardsville, died Friday in Valley Crest, Plains Township.

Born in Edwardsville, he was the son of the late Anthony and Caroline Pointek Pokrzywa.

He was formerly employed by the Glen Alden Coal Co. at the Woodward Colliery. He was a life member of the Columbia Hose Co. #1, Edwardsville, and the Six-County Firemen's Association. He was a member of St. Hedwig's Church, Kingston.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Walter and Stanley.

Surviving are sisters, Stella Kotarski, Union, N.J.; Helen Tomasura, Edwardsville; brother, John, Fairless Hills; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from Kopicki Funeral Home, 263 Zerbey Ave., Kingston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Hedwig's Church. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Dallas. Friends may call from 8 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Community Care, Kingston.

Scoble, Paul

Paul F. Scoble, 40, of Wyoming Avenue, Exeter, died Saturday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born Nov. 14, 1960, in Pittston, he was the son of the late Harry K. and Ann J. Molloy Scoble. He was a graduate of Wyoming Area High School, class of 1979.

He was employed at Suburban Publishing Co., Exeter, and at Quebecor World Hazleton, Inc., Hazleton, for the past seven years. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Exeter.

He and his wife, the former Marie Pazdziorko, celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary on Oct. 17.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are brothers, John T., Kingston Township; William H., Temple Hills, Md.; Martin C., Wyoming; sisters, Kathryn N. Weed, West Wyoming; Geraldine M. Scoble, Falls; Ann M. Shinko, Factoryville; Patricia J. Murman, Exeter; numerous nieces, nephews, a great-niece and great-nephew.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Frank A. Gubbiotti Funeral Home, 1030 Wyoming Ave., Exeter, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Sherlock, Francis
December 11, 2000

Francis G. Sherlock, 73, of Salem Boulevard, Berwick, died Dec. 11 at his home.

Born Sept. 29, 1927, in West Nanticoke, he was the son of the late Richard and Mary Stuttler Sherlock.

He operated Sherlock's Service Station, Route 11, Salem Township. He also worked as an independent truck driver and owned Sherlock's Red Barn Cafe, Salem Township.

He was a member of the Berwick Moose Lodge and a social member of the American Legion Post in Shickshinny, the Garibaldi Society in Berwick and the Mocanaqua Sporting Club.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Sherlock; and sister, Mary Linder.

Surviving is his wife, the former Helen Petroski, whom he marriage on July 26, 1947.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Mayo Funeral Home, 77 N. Main St., Shickshinny, with the Rev. Thomas D. Skotek officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Mocanaqua. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Surmick, Joseph
December 29, 2000

Joseph J. Surmick, of East Muir Avenue, Hazleton, died Friday at his home.

Born in Hazleton, he was the son of the late John A. and Anna (Kowalchik) Surmick.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, having served with the 42nd Bombardment Group of the 13th Air Force with the rank of staff sergeant in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He fought in several battles and received the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and one Silver Star.

Before retiring, he was an auditor for the A&P Corp. for 41 years and served on the board of the UFCW Federal Credit Union.

He was a member of St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Hazleton, and its Holy Name Society and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 589, Hazleton.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Rita Surmick.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, the former Mary Berta; son, Ronald J., Cleveland; sisters, Helen Yoder, Aristes; Mary Walko, Hazleton; Anna Stascinsky, Catasauqua; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the John J. Pusti Funeral Home, 480 W. Broad St., Hazleton, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's R.C. Church. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Freeland. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. A prayer service will be conducted.

Verdine, Anthony
December 29, 2000

Anthony Verdine, of 854 Shoemaker Ave., West Wyoming, passed away on Friday evening at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born and raised in West Pittston, he lived in West Wyoming for many years. He was the son of the late Angelo and Philomena Colarusso Verdine.

He was a bus driver for Emmanuel Bus Co., Pace Bus Co. and Wyoming Area School District. He also owned and operated A and S Market, West Wyoming.

He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was one of the founders of Wyoming and West Wyoming mini football. He was a member of the Fox Hill Country Club and St. Anthony of Padua Church, Exeter, and was on the West Wyoming Council.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Patrick Verdine; sisters, Lucille Weisberger, Josephine Weidnerand and Mary Dolce.

Surviving are his wife of 41 years, the former Vickie Barone, West Pittston; son, Anthony Verdine Jr., West Wyoming; daughters, Mrs. John (Debbie) Homa, Sweet Valley; Mrs. Mark (Melanie) Dovidas, Kingston; five grandchildren, Deanne Verdine, Anton Verdine, Tanner Homa, Matthew Dovidas and Kayla Dovidas; brothers, Andrew Verdine, Duryea; and Ray Verdine, Yatesville.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the Adonizio Funeral Home Inc., 251 William St., Pittston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, with the Rev. Paul McDonnell officiating. Interment will be in the family mausoleum in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice St. John, Carey Avenue, Wilkes-Barre.

Wyrsch, Ruth
December 29, 2000

Ruth May Hazel Wyrsch, 85, of Binghamton, N.Y., and formerly of Huntsville, died Friday at Foulk Manor, Wilmington, Del.

Born May 8, 1915, in Kingston, she was the daughter of the late William and May Bulford Hazel. She was a graduate of Dallas Township High School and Bloomsburg State Teachers College.

Before her marriage, she was an elementary school teacher at the Dallas Township School. After moving to Binghamton, she taught school for many years in the Johnson City Central School District, Johnson City, N.Y., retiring in 1975.

She was a member of the Boulevard United Methodist Church, Binghamton, for more than 50 years, the United Methodist Women, the Lydia Circle and the Christian Women's Club. She was a former matron and 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Johnson City Service Chapter, and a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association.

She was a direct descendant of the Rev. Jacob Johnson, who was Wyoming Valley's first settled minister in 1772.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Frank A. Wyrsch.

Surviving are her daughter, Shirley Stout, Wilmington; one grandson; and many cousins.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1314 Foulk Road, Wilmington, with the Rev. Ronald Bergman officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the church. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Lehman Centre Cemetery, Lehman, with the Rev. Dr. Rudolph Libeck, of the Huntsville United Methodist Church, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Boulevard United Methodist Church, Binghamton, or the Huntsville United Methodist Church, c/o Shirley Nicely, 9 Warren Dr., Dallas, 18612. Arrangements are by McCrery Funeral Home, Wilmington.
