Edward M. Croughn Sr., of Promontory Drive, White Haven, Poconos, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday on admission at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born May 16, 1928, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late James Kirk and Martha (Coulter) Croughn. He was a graduate of the former St. Mary's High School, Wilkes-Barre, was a sewing machine mechanic at Eagle Enterprise, Wilkes-Barre, plant manager in the Glen Lyon division, and a stockroom superintendent for HPG International, Inc., Mountaintop. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, White Haven, an original director and president of the White Haven Pocono Owners Association, member of the Wilkes-Barre Democratic Club, Bear Creek Township Zoning Board and the Bear Creek Township Democratic Club. He was a basketball coach with the CYC Biddy program, St. Patrick's Church basketball league and the Jay Vee Basketball team at St. Mary's High School.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, the former Charlotte Kaplansky; son, Edward M., Jr., White Haven; daughter, Patricia Cunningham, Plymouth; four grandchildren; brothers, James, Florida; and Lawrence, Wilkes-Barre; sisters, Mary Noyalis, White Haven, Poconos; Jean Yazbeck, Wilkes-Barre; and Maureen Bukavich, Nanticoke; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, William.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Bednarski Funeral Home, 27 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, White Haven. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Dempsey, Lottie

Lottie T. (Skonieczski) Dempsey, of Glen Mills, died Monday at the Riddle Memorial Hospital, Media.

Born Dec. 5, 1918, in Nanticoke, she was a daughter of late Joseph and Mary (Modla) Skonieczski. She was a graduate of Wilkes-Barre General Hospital School of Nursing, was a registered nurse and worked at Delaware County Hospital, Mercy Catholic Medical Center and Concord Villa Nursing Home. She was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, New Valleybrook Road, Chester Heights and the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital Alumnae.

Surviving are her husband, William S.; son, William S., Jr., Thornton; daughters, Diane Burgy, Upper Providence; Ann, Media; and Stephanie Breitmayer, Downington; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; brothers, Leonard, Bernard and Chester Zbierajewski, all of Nanticoke; and sister, Irene Zatorski, Nanticoke.

The funeral will be at 8:15 a.m. Friday from the Carr Funeral Home, 935 S. Providence Road, Wallingford, with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. The Rev. Richard Williams will officiate. Interment will be in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple Township. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Dugan, Veronica

Veronica Teresa Dugan, 65, of Brown Street, Duryea, died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital, Scranton.

Born in Duryea, she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Tillie (Stachelek) Abent. She was a graduate of Duryea High School and was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Duryea, and The Polish Women's Society.

She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Joseph, III; grandson, Thomas Mitchell; brothers, Louis, John and Frank; and sisters, Nellie Balent, Stella Orleski and Edna Kroptavich.

Surviving are her daughter, Ruth Bennie, Old Forge; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the Bernard J. Piontek Funeral Home, Inc., 204 Main St., Duryea, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church. The Rev. Charles Rokosz will officiate. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Old Forge. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Dukes, John

John C. Dukes, 97, of South Empire Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at the Davis Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Mountaintop.

Born July 28, 1902, in Laurel Run, he was a son of the late Evan and Anna (Martin) Dukes. He was a graduate of the Laurel Run schools and Wilkes-Barre Business College. He worked at the Glen Alden Coal Co. and Pagnotti Enterprises. He was a member of the Laurel Run Primitive Methodist Church, Wilkes-Barre; Wilkes-Barre City Zoning Commission and Masonic Order.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Mary Kazimer; brothers, Clyde, Glenn and Charles; and sisters, Alice Higgins and Esther Davis.

Surviving are his son, John, Hatfield; daughter, Janet Romano, Huntington Mills; three grandchildren; sisters, Pearl Lounsberry and Audrey Dukes, both of Wilkes-Barre; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, Park Avenue and South Street, Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. George P. Kropp officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Dallas. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Laurel Run Primitive Methodist Church.

Julia J. Heck, of Wyoming, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Sophie (Gasky) Hannon. She was a member of Holy Saviour Church, Wilkes-Barre, president of the Parsons Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6227 and the Cosmopolitan Senior Citizens of Wyoming; a volunteer at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains Township, and at the American Red Cross, Wilkes-Barre.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William J., Sr.; grandson, Robert; brothers, Edward Kraftick and Sylvester Hannon; and sisters, Leona Brandt and Frances Santiwan.

Surviving are her sons, William J., Jr., Wilkes-Barre; and Thomas, Harveys Lake; daughter, Judie Borucki, Lawrenceville; Ga.; companion, Anthony Matreselva, Wyoming; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 S. Main St., Plains Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Saviour Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Marguerite Krise, 88, formerly of the Maple Hill Personal Care Home, Dallas, died Tuesday at the Lakeside Nursing Center, Harveys Lake.

A visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. today at the Stanley S. Stegura Funeral Home, Inc., 614 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Leco, William

William Philip Leco, 66, of Bowman Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at Bear Creek Nursing Center, Bear Creek, where he lived for a few weeks.

Born Nov. 14, 1934, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Philip and Alice (Babonis) Leco. He was a graduate of GAR Memorial High School, was a molder for death by his granddaughter, Kimberly Zdipko.

Surviving are his wife, Veronica; sons, Gary, Wilkes-Barre Township; William Leco, Bristol; Keith Wilde, Philip and Daniel Leco, all of Wilkes-Barre; daughters, Charline VanScoy, Wilkes-Barre; and Linda Zdipko, Miners Mills, Wilkes-Barre; 21 grandchildren, one greatgrandson; and brother, Charles, Wilkes-Barre.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the John W. Frank Funeral Home, 124 S. Grant St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Lewis, Helen

Helen I. (Girvan) Lewis, 84, of Phoenix, formerly of Dallas, died June 3 at her home.

Born on July 21, 1915, in Berwick, she was a daughter of the late John and Margaret (Britt) Girvan. She was a graduate of Dallas Township High School. She and her late husband, Albert, moved to Phoenix in 1948 where she managed the office of a large engineering firm until retiring.

She was preceded in death by brothers, John, Francis, Robert and William; sisters, Margaret, Elizabeth, Catherine and Mary Louise.

Surviving are brothers, Tom R. Girvan, Eugene, Ore.; Joseph P. Girvan, Sayre.

Memorial services were held at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Phoenix. Interment will be in Fern Knoll Cemetery, Dallas, at a later date. Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to the Alzheimer's Society or the charity of the donors choice.

Morgan, John

John Morgan Jr., of Apache Drive, Shickshinny Lake, Shickshinny, died Tuesday at home.

Born Dec. 17, 1919, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late John and Abbie (Gilroy) Morgan. He was an electronic instructor at Fort Monmouth, N.J. He was a 20-year U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II and the Korean War. He was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941, and was awarded an Appreciation Medal on April 3, 2000, from the United States. He was a member of Plymouth Lodge 332 F & AM, American Legion Post 495, Shickshinny, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1425, Plymouth.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, James and Stewart; and sisters, Dorothy Jesso and Lois Owens.

Surviving are his wife, the former Clara Frace; son, John P., Brick, N.J.; daughter, Yolanda Thomas, Sweet Valley; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sister, Sarah Strauser, Shavertown, Kingston Township; brothers, Robert, Shavertown; Edward, Newton, Iowa; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Frederick & Snowdon Funeral Home, 617 Carey Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with Pastor Tim Cappucci officiating. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. to time of service Friday at the funeral home.

Elva A. Sick of Tunkhannock, died Wednesday at the Carpenter Care Center, Tunkhannock.

Born Dec. 3, 1912, in Falls Township, Wyoming County, she was the daughter of the late Roy B. And Nina (Gregory) Jennings. She was a member of the Tunkhannock Eastern Star Lodge and Tunkhannock United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marlot.

Surviving are her son, Lloyd, Candor, N.Y.; daughter, Ruth Slocum, Tunkhannock; and two granddaughters.

Funeral services will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday from the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, Inc. 73 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, with the Rev. Roger Richards officiating. Interment will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Tunkhannock. Friends may call from 6 p.m. until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

Traglia, Virginia

Virginia "Regina" Traglia, 90, of Wyoming Avenue, Exeter, died Wednesday at Hospice Community Care, Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born March 1, 1910, in Pittston, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Antoinette (Pellicotti) Traglia. She attended West Pittston schools and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, West Pittston.

Surviving are her brothers, Anthony and Andrew, both of Exeter; sisters, Evelyn Jacoby, Wyoming; Lucille Burns, Scranton; Rita Venetz and Mary Calabrese, both of West Pittston; Matilda, at home; and Grace Luzetski, Edwardsville; eight nieces and nephews and 11 great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Carmella Stubbs.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Frank A. Gubbiotti Funeral Home, 1030 Wyoming Ave., Exeter, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church. Interment will be in West Pittston Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

Walters, Eleanor

Eleanor M. Walters, 84, of East Eight Street, Bloomsburg, died Tuesday at Bloomsburg Hospital, where she was a patient for one day.

Born Oct. 25, 1915, in West Wyoming, she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Margaret (Christian) Pacenka. She was a 1933 graduate of West Wyoming High School. She and her late husband, Floyd A., operated the family business, the Keystone Germicide Co., and she was an amateur seamstress and clothing designer. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Ruth Webb Sunday school class, and the Eastern Star, Chapter 279, all of Bloomsburg.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, William Pacenka.

Surviving are her son, Floyd W., Bloomsburg; daughter, Peggy, Lake Balboa, Calif.; two grandsons and one nephew.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Allen Funeral Home, Market and Eight streets, with the Lay Minister of Visitation, Susan O. Rugutski officiating. Burial will be in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10:30 until time of service Saturday. Memorial donations may be made to SIDS, Pennsylvania Department of Health, 1123 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg, 17815; or Wesley United Methodist Memorial Fund, 130 W. Third St., Bloomsburg, 17815.

Helen Yakabovicz, of Slocum Street, Swoyersville, died Wednesday at the Hospice VNA at the Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Swoyersville, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Elizabeth (Chismar) Chergosky. She was a member of Holy Name/St. Mary's Church, Swoyersville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; brothers, John Chergosky and Michael Cheremsak; and sisters, Anna and Mary Cheremsak.

Surviving are her daughter, Theresa Sabol, Hanover Township; sons, Joseph, Wilkes-Barre; and Walter, Swoyersville; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene Samuels, Trucksville; and Elizabeth Yonik, Swoyersville; brothers, Nicholas Cheremsak, Manville, N.J.; and Andrew Cheremsak, Swoyersville; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from the Lehman-Gregory Funeral Home, Inc., 281 Chapel St., Swoyersville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Name/St. Mary's Church. Carrie E. Sack, formerly of Newport Township, died Wednesday at the Bonham Nursing Home, Stillwater.

Born Dec. 29, 1909, in Newport Township, she was a daughter of the late Julius and Louise (Neiman) Sack. She was a member of the Newport United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Surviving are her nephew, Thomas Sack, Swoyersville, with whom she resided; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Barbara Saxe officiating. Interment will be in Hanover Green Cemetery, Hanover Township. Loretta C. Szumski, of Pearl River, N.Y., died May 25 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Suffern, N.Y.

Born in Avoca, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Charlotte Kocialek. She was a graduate of Avoca schools and pursued a nursing degree. She was a member of St. Margaret's Church, Pearl River, N.Y., where she was an organist.

Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Stephen A.; sons, Daniel S., Isleton, Calif.; Thomas, Pittston Township; James M., Tucson, Ariz.; David C., Cathedral City, Calif.; Stephen R., Huachuca City, Ariz.; Joseph S., Avoca; Timothy J., Glendale, Ariz.; Robert P., Westchester, N.Y.; Richard G., Ann Arbor, Mich.; daughter, Judith A. Ransom, Panama City Beach, Fla.; twelve grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on May 30 at St. Margaret's Church. Interment was in the Frederick Loescher Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Monsey, N.Y. Funeral arrangements were by the Assuma-Shankley Funeral Home, Pearl River, N.Y.

Patricia "Stacia" Novak, of East Union Street, Nanticoke, died Thursday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Nanticoke, she was a daughter of the late Leon and Josephine Rohon. She was a graduate of Nanticoke High School and the Wilfred Beauty Academy, New York. She owned and operated Patsey's Wilfred Beauty Shop, Nanticoke, and was a member of St. Stanislaus Church, Nanticoke.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary and Helen; and brothers, Clem, Zigmund and Alexander.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Henry; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from the Stanley S. Stegura Funeral Home, Inc., 614 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Hazel (Hertzog) Bohn. She was a 1941 graduate of Reading High School, member of St. Joseph's Church, Nanticoke, and its Christian Women and president of the Nanticoke-Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph; son, Joseph, Jr., Millersburg; daughters, Gloria Bleauskas, Mountaintop; Theresa Hudak, Plymouth; Joanne Thrash, Nuangola; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild; brother, Richard, Reading; and sisters, June Wurster, Temple; Ramona Moyer and Rosalie Gantert, both of Reading.

The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from the Grontkowski Funeral Home, P.C. 51-53 W. Green St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church. Interment will be in Hanover Green Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Christian Women of St. Joseph's Church will recite the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
