Evans, John

John H. Evans, of Moosic Road, Old Forge, died Friday at Mercy Hospital, Scranton.

Born in Taylor, he was the son of the late John and Mary Ann Evans Sr. He attended the Taylor public school system.

Before retiring he was employed at Tobyhanna Army Depot. He was a World War II Army veteran of the European Theater. He was also a member of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, Old Forge.

He and his wife, the former Stella M. Schiavo, would have celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary on June 28.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Ozzie.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Louis V. Ciuccio Funeral Home, 145 Moosic Road, Old Forge, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, West Grace Street, Old Forge. Interment will be in Old Forge Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Embleton, Arnold
January 19, 2001
Arnold W. Embleton, 84, of Inkerman, Jenkins Township, and formerly of West Pittston, died Friday at the Inpatient Unit of Hospice Care of the V.N.A., Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre, after a lengthy illness.

Born in Pittston, he was the son of the late Albert E. and Bessie Wheatley Embleton and was a graduate of Exeter High School.

He worked at the Pittston Post Office and was a freight and passenger conductor with the Lehigh Valley Railroad, Coxton Yards, Duryea, for more than 35 years, retiring in 1976. He was later a school bus driver with the Emmanuel Bus Co., Dallas, and Pace Bus Lines, West Pittston, in the Wyoming Area School District for 18 years. He also owned and operated Embleton's Electric Service, Inkerman. He was an authority on local railroad operations and the Laurel Line system, was a featured reference person for articles appearing in local and national publications and was affiliated with the Strasburg Railroad attraction and museum.

He resided in West Pittston for many years before moving to Inkerman. He attended the First United Methodist Church, West Pittston, and was a member of Valley Lodge #499, F. & A.M., West Pittston; Keystone Consistory, Scottish Rite Masons, Scranton; and Irem Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Wilkes-Barre; Irem Temple Police/Provost Guard Unit for many years and was an honorary member. He was also a member of the Board of Governors of the Shrine Club of Greater Wilkes-Barre, the oldest life member of West Pittston Hose Co. #1 and was a member of its board of directors and Firemen's Relief Fund.

Surviving are his wife, the former Shirley Crossley Naugle, with whom he celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary this month; sons, Donald O. Embleton, Kingston; Robert C. Naugle, Forty Fort; William D. Naugle, Duryea; daughters, Deborah Colleran, West Pittston; Shirene Biga, Plymouth; sister, Dorothy E. Brown, Baltimore; 13 grandchildren; and a nephew.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home, Inc., 211 Luzerne Ave., West Pittston, with the Rev. Robert J. Herrala, of First United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Arthur E. Redmond, of Slocum Chapel, Exeter, officiating. Interment will be in Pittston Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Valley Lodge #499, F. & A.M. will conduct a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. The Irem Temple Provost Guard will conduct services at 7:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Embleton family, c/o 82 Chapman St., Inkerman, Pa. 18640.

Gelsleichter, Laura

Laura Gelsleichter, of Fernbrook, died Saturday at ManorCare, Kingston.

Funeral arrangements are pending from the Richard H. Disque Funeral Home, Inc., 672 Memorial Highway, Dallas.

Hughes, James
January 6, 2001
James Hughes Jr., 62, of Wurtsboro, N.Y., and former resident of Wilkes-Barre, died Jan. 6 in Wurtsboro.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late James and Margaret Hughes Sharp Sr. He attended the Wilkes-Barre area schools.

He was employed by the New York Department of Transportation and was a member of Our Lady of Assumption Church in Bloomingburg, N.Y.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Harriet Hummel; children, Deborah Smithem, True Johnson, James III and Timothy, all of Wurtsboro; brothers, Robert, Penn Lake; Ralph Sharp, Sweet Valley; sister, Rose Korpita, Bristol, Conn; Ella Litzenberger and Phyllis Feddock, both of Wilkes-Barre; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the Van Inwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, Wurtsboro, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Assumption Church.

Levy, Raymond
January 19, 2001
Raymond D. Levy, 74, a resident of Adams Manor, Scranton, and formerly of South Scranton, died Friday at Mercy Hospital, Scranton, following an illness.

Born and raised in Montreal, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Anna Stone Levy. He was a member of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Parish, Scranton.

Before retiring he was employed as a salesman for the American Furniture Co., Wilkes-Barre. He also worked as assistant manager in the electronics department of Sugerman's and Triangle Kitchen Cabinets and as a sales representative for Luster Line Tool Products, Panelrama and Superior Omega Window Co.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Lionel and Oscar Levy; and sister, Esther Levy.

Surviving are his wife of 36 years, the former Rose Fanelli Matylewicz; step children, Atty. Leonard Matylewicz, Agoura Hills, Calif.; Carol Runge, Denver; Donna Kerrigan, Scranton; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and family members in Canada.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the Neil W. Regan Funeral Home, Inc., 1900 Pittston Ave., Scranton, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, Prospect Avenue, Scranton, with Monsignor Leonard Novak officiating. Interment will be in Italian American Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Musial, Edward
January 20, 2001
Edward A. Musial, 90, of West Main Street, Plymouth, died Saturday at the Valley Crest Nursing Home, Plains Township.

Born April 11, 1910, in Plymouth, he was the son of the late George and Agnes Dural Musial. He was a graduate of Plymouth High School, class of 1929.

He was a member of the St. Mary's-St. Stephen's Church Community of Plymouth. He operated his family's grocery, in Plymouth, and was employed by the Sordoni Construction Co. He later became an independent carpenter.

He was preceded in death by brothers, John and Stanley Musial; sisters, Catherine Smith and Helen Musial.

Surviving are sisters, Dorothy Musial, Plymouth; Florence Nejako, Kingston; Anna Saylor, Wilkes-Barre; brother, Anthony Musial, Plymouth; nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from the S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, 530 W. Main St., Plymouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Nativity Church, Plymouth. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Plymouth Township. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday. A prayer service will be held Monday.

Matys, Anna
January 19, 2001
Anna C. Matys, of Moosic, died Friday at the Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton, shortly after admission.

Born in Moosic, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Anna Haltur Choma. She was educated in the Moosic schools.

Before retiring she was employed in the area garment industry. She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Church, Avoca.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Matys; brother, Joseph Chama; sisters, Mary Choma and Helen Gannon.

Surviving are sisters, Susan Boyer, Dupont; Elizabeth Sirak, Clifton, N.J.; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday from the Bernard J. Piontek Funeral Home Inc., 204 Main St., Duryea, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in SS. Peter & Paul Church, Avoca, with the Rev. Mark J. Bochinski officiating. Interment will be in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Old Forge. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. Vigil services will be at 2:15 p.m.

Poff, Frances
January 19, 2001
Frances L. Poff, 78, of Mountaintop, died Friday at East Mountain Manor, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Oct. 27, 1922, in Noxen, she was the daughter of the late John and Ellen Allen Space. She resided in New Jersey most of her adult life and returned to Northeastern Pennsylvania in 1975 to live with her daughter, Frances Hoyt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Poff.

Surviving, in addition to her daughter, Frances, are daughters, Joyce Hall, Carol Rizzolo, and son, John H. Poff, all of New Jersey; sisters, Sylvia Brace, Kunkle; Cora Campbell and Evelyn Tramick, both of Hunlock Creek; brothers, James Space, New Jersey; Bert Space, Drums; William Space, Levittown; Frank Space, Montrose; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Private funeral services will be Tuesday from the Nulton Funeral Home, Beaumont. Interment will be in Orcutt Grove Cemetery, Noxen. There will be no calling hours.

Prushinski, Celia

Celia Prushinski, of Garfield Street, Nanticoke, died Saturday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born Aug. 10, 1910, in Hanover Township, she was the daughter of the late Simon and Katherine Graczyk Kolodziej.

She was formerly employed at the General Cigar Co., Nanticoke, and was a member of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church, Buttonwood section of Hanover Township.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley B.; brothers, Ted, Michael and Carl Cologie.

Surviving are sons, Joseph, Nanticoke; Father Carl Prushinski, St. Adalbert's Church, Glen Lyon; Robert N., Larksville; brothers, Edward Cologie, Hanover Township; Walter Cologie, East Rutherford, N.J.; James Wheelwright, Muhlenburg; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home, 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Nanticoke. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Wassil, Margaret

Margaret Wassil, 83, of Plains Township, died Friday in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born Feb. 21, 1917, in Plains Township, she was the daughter of the late John (Bobick) Olsakovsky and Anna Fetchko. She was educated in the Plains Township public school system and was a life resident of the township.

Before retiring she was employed by the S. Frieder and Sons Co. Cigar Manufacturers, Wilkes-Barre. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Byzantine Catholic Church, Wilkes-Barre, and the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Wassil; sisters, Elizabeth Florek, Mary Kozich, Anna Yatsko and Julia Ores; brothers, John and Michael Olsakovsky and Joseph Bobick.

Surviving are daughters, Marge Novak and Elaine Corcoran, both of Plains Township; son, Michael Wassil, Lansdale; sister, Helen Pellock, Dearborn, Mich.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday from the Simon S. Russin Funeral Home, Inc., 136 Maffett St., Plains Township, with the Office of Christian Burial and Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Assumption Byzantine Catholic Church, Wilkes-Barre, with Father James Hayer officiating. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Slovak Cemetery, Exeter. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.Sun Parastas services will be at 7:30 p.m. with Father James Hayer officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Pennsylvanians for Human Life, 201 S. Main St., Wilkes-Barre.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Church, Nanticoke, with the Rev. Joseph Orlowski officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Russian Orthodox Cemetery, Nanticoke. Arrangements are by the Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home, 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke.

Atlas, Irving

Irving Atlas, of Clay Avenue, Scranton, died Sunday at Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton.Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Louis and Rose (Hine) Atlas. He was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and Penn State University. He operated the Irving Grossman Co., Scranton. He was a colonel in the U.S. Army and a veteran of World War II. He served at the U.S. Army Reserve Center, Scranton. He was a member of Temple Israel, the Jewish Community Center, B'nai B'rith, the Jewish War Veterans, the Scranton Lodge of Elks and the Retired Officers Association of Northeast Pennsylvania.

Clyde T. Barnes, 53, of RR 1, Laceyville (Skinners Eddy), died Sunday at his home.Born March 4, 1947, in Meshoppen, he was the son of the late Thomas A. and Charlotte (Stine) Barnes Wisnosky. He was a 1965 graduate of Wyalusing Valley High School. He was a self-employed contractor. He was a member of St. Joachim's Roman Catholic Church, Meshoppen. He was a SAL member of the Rought Hall Post 510 American Legion, Black Walnut; and the Black Walnut Rod and Reel Club.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and owned and operated Morts Floor Covering. He was a member of Temple Israel, Masons, and a former member of the Jewish Community Center.
