Eleanor D. Thomas, 92, died Thursday at Birchwood Nursing Home, Nanticoke.

Born Oct. 30, 1909, in Pittston, she was a daughter of the late Simon and Victoria (Garvey) Betnar. She attended Nanticoke schools and was a graduate of Mrs. Sherbin's Beauty School. She owned and operated Eleanor's Beauty Shop, Hanover section of Nanticoke. She worked most recently in the Greater Nanticoke Area High School cafeteria. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Hanover section of Nanticoke, and its societies.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ann Burgas and Nell Kalinka; and brothers, Simon and Anthony.

Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Julius; son, James, Nanticoke; daughter, Bernice McTague, Nanticoke; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary Kmetz, Nanticoke.

The funeral will be 9:30 a.m. Monday from the Thomas E. Buczkowski Funeral Home, 210 Pine St., Hanover section of Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church. The Rev. Michael Quinnan will officiate. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Nanticoke. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Bukeavich, Anna

Anna M. Bukeavich, 91, of Solomon Street, Newtown section of Hanover Township, died Thursday at the Hampton House, Sans Souci Parkway, Hanover Township.

Born Feb. 4, 1910, in Sugar Notch, she was a daughter of the late John and Ava (Wasilewsko) Warnagiris. She was a member of St. Leo's Church, Ashley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred M.; son, Jerome "Jerry;" brother, Joseph; and sister, Veronica Burry.

Surviving are her son, Alfred J., at home; four grandsons and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be 9 a.m. Monday from George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Leo's Church, Manhattan Street, Ashley. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hampton House.

Bennett, Margaret

Margaret E. Bennett, 76, of Wilkes-Barre, died Friday at the Riverstreet Manor, Wilkes-Barre.

Born May 5, 1925 in Hunlock Creek, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Gertrude (Meyers) Lasher.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard H. George.

Surviving are her second husband, Harold C. Bennett; son, the Rev. Kenneth H. George, Wilkes-Barre; stepson, H. Curtis Bennett, Mountaintop; one granddaughter; two stepgrandchildren; brother, Arthur, Jr., Levittown; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday from the Frederick & Snowdon Funeral Home, 617 Carey Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. George Johnson, pastor, officiating. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Pomicter, Mary

Mary Pomicter, of Phillips Street, Lyndwood section of Hanover Township, died Thursday at her daughter's home in Nanticoke. Born July 21, 1918 in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late John and Anna (Regiec) Bankos. She was a graduate of Hanover High School. She worked for various silk mill factories throughout the Wyoming Valley area, before retiring. She was a member of St. Casimir's Church, Delaney Street, Hanover Township.

Mecca, Monsignor Mark

Monsignor Mark A. Mecca, 89, pastor emeritus of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Hazleton, died Friday at the VNA Hospice of Lackawanna County, Scranton.

Born June 5, 1912 in Dunmore, he was a son of the late Dominick A. and Mary Josephine Mecca. He was a graduate of Dunmore High School and studied at St. Charles College, Catonsville, Md. He completed his studies for the priesthood at the Pontificio Seminario Romano, Rome, Italy, and was ordained on Dec. 6, 1936, in Rome by His Eminence, Francesco Cardinal Marchetti-Selvaggiani.

He was assistant pastor at Most Precious Blood Church and Our Lady of Grace Church, both in Hazleton, and later at St. Mary's Church, Old Forge. He was pastor at Holy Rosary Church, Hazleton, St. Anthony of Padua Church, Scranton, and St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Jessup, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Hazleton. He became pastor emeritus of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Sept. 1, 1987. He was named a Prelate of Honor on May 19, 1968. He was professor of fundamental theology at St. Pius X Seminary, Dalton, advocate and procurator of the Diocesan Tribunal and member of the Diocesan School Board.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Dr. John, Dr. Donato D., Charles and Joseph; and sisters, Anna Lepone and Jane.

Surviving are his sister, Lucie Ferraro, Dunmore; brothers, Dominick and James, both of Dunmore; and nieces and nephews.

A vigil Mass will be at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Dunmore, with the Rev. Joseph R. Kopacz, vicar for priests, officiating. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with Monsignor Anthony C. Marra, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday and before the funeral Mass Tuesday at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 303 Smith St., Dunmore. Arrangements are by the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Dunmore.

William F. Jesse, 84, of Franklin Street, Edwardsville, formerly of Forty Fort, died Friday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Born in Larksville, he was a son of the late Charles and Wanda (Doberstein) Jesse. He was a graduate of Larksville High School. He lived on Franklin Street, Edwardsville, for 44 years. He was a conductor for 45 years on the Erie Lackawanna Railroad and Conrail, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Forty Fort United Methodist Church, Kingston Lodge No. 395, F&AM, Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg, Irem Temple, AAONMS, Wilkes-Barre, and was a shriner. He was active with the Westside Food Bank and was a member of the Susquehanna Trailers Hiking Club. He formerly associated with the Edwardsville Little League and helped obtain the land where the fields are currently located. He also coached in the Kunkle Little League and Dallas Cowboys mini football.

Gladys Hudack, 68, of Mossville Road, Benton, died Thursday at Bloomsburg Hospital.

Born March 31, 1933, in Fairmount Township, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Hess) Moss. She worked at Bonham Nursing Center, Stillwater, until retiring. She was a member of St. Martha's Church, Fairmount Springs.

She was preceded in death by her son, Joseph; brother, William; and stepfather, Ray Boston.

Surviving are her husband, Edward; daughters, Mary Erwine, Dallas; Judy, Sweet Valley, Ross Township; Joyce Bednarek, Beverly Diltz, Cindy Ashelman and Jo Ann, all of Red Rock; Edwina Stempien, Bethel Hill; and Janice Perry, Fairmount Springs; sons, Leonard and Richard, both of Benton; and Kenneth, Red Rock; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday from the Clarke Piatt Funeral Home Inc., 6 Sunset Lake Road, Hunlock Creek, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Martha's Church. The Rev. Joseph R. Kakareka, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn., 38105; or to the American Diabetes Foundation, 63 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre.

Evans, Catherine

Catherine (Bowen) Evans, 93, of Dallas, died Thursday at the Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas.

Born in Old Forge, she was the daughter of the late William and Clara (Crues) Bowen. She was a graduate of Old Forge High School and the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital School of Nursing. She was a medical/surgical supervisor at General and Nesbitt hospitals, until retiring in 1964 and was the first school nurse in the Dallas Township schools. She was a member of Shavertown United Methodist Church, Dallas, Dallas Chapter 396 Order of the Eastern Star, and the Alumni Association of General Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester.

Surviving are her daughter, Clare A. Morgan, Dallas; son, Thomas W., Trucksville, Kingston Township; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A private funeral will be held from the Richard H. Disque Funeral Home Inc., 672 Memorial Highway, Dallas, with the Rev. Douglas A. Clark, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Fern Knoll Burial Park, Dallas. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Sadie L. "Sue" Sabol, 87, of Spring Street, East End section of Wilkes-Barre, died Thursday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Jacob and Frances Macierowski. She attended Wilkes-Barre city schools. She worked at the former First Eastern Bank, Wilkes-Barre, for 15 years, until retiring. She was a member of Holy Savior Roman Catholic Church, Hillard Street, Wilkes-Barre, and the Five Points Senior Citizens Club, East End section of Wilkes-Barre.

Born April 1, 1936, he was a son of the late Vincent and Jule (Yanek) Tomchak. He was a graduate of Meyers High School. He formerly worked for Acme Markets. He was a member of St. Aloysius Church.

She was a seamstress for several area sewing factories. She was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Nanticoke.

John T. Howe, 54, of RR 3, Dallas, formerly of Harding, Exeter Township, and Groton, Conn., died Wednesday at his home. Born June 18, 1947 in Syracuse, N.Y., he was a son of Helen (Spahalski) Howe, Jenkins Township, and the late Philip Howe. He was a 1964 graduate of West Pittston High School and graduate of the Administration/Supervision Program at Southern Connecticut University, New Haven, Conn. He received a bachelor of arts degree in history from Wilkes College, and MAT degree from Connecticut College and was a Taft fellow of Taft Institute, Connecticut College, both of New London, Conn.

She was a graduate of the former Nescopeck High School. She was an operator for Bell Telephone, Berwick. She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Nescopeck.

Viola S. Mowery, 84, formerly of North Arch Street, Berwick, died Wednesday at Berwick Retirement Village 2. Born Aug. 20, 1917 in the Wanamie section of Newport Township, she was a daughter of the late John and Laura Smith. She was a cook for Bennett's, Mickey's, Bluebird and Uptown restaurants, all of Berwick. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Berwick.

Martha Claire Shields, 69, of Parrish Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre. Born July 26, 1932 in Kingston, she was a daughter of the late James B. and Lottie (Durland) Rundle. She was a 1950 graduate of Kingston High School and 1951 graduate of Wyoming Seminary Dean School of Business. She worked for many years in the administrative office of the Wilkes-Barre Area School District, retiring in 1994. She was a member of the Parrish Street United Methodist Church, Wilkes-Barre, serving as financial secretary and organist. She was also an organist at the Stella Presbyterian Church, Forty Fort, and at the Wyoming Avenue Christian Church, Kingston. She was a member of the Albright United Methodist Church's Rainbow Senior Citizens Club, Northeastern Pennsylvania Regional Antique Automobile Car Club of America, National Antique Automobile Car Club and the Packard Car Club.

Ernest "Toby" Rosengrant, of North Bridge Street, Tunkhannock, died Wednesday at the Monroe Regional Medical Center, Ocala, Fla. Born Dec. 23, 1921 in Tunkhannock, he was a son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Dotter) Rosengrant. He worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Highways in Wyoming County, before retiring. He owned Ernie's Bait Shop, Tunkhannock. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Lake Carey Sportsman Club and Dennis Strong American Legion Post, Tunkhannock.

He was a 1974 graduate of St. John's High School, Pittston. He worked in the area garment industry. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Pittston.
