John Francis Rouse
John Francis Rouse, 62, of Albany Township and Hernando Beach, Fla., died Sunday, July 30, 2000, in Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. He and his wife, the former Diane Carley observed their 39th wedding anniversary March 24. He worked for the past four years at Lockheed Martin in Florida. He retired in 1989 from IBM, Owego, N.Y. after 33 years. He was a 1956 graduate of Johnson City High School, Johnson City, N.Y.. He served in the Navy. Born April 22, 1938, in Albany Township, he was a son of Francis Xavier “Zack” and Josephine Sax Rouse. Surviving, besides his wife, are his mother, Josephine Cain of Johnson City; a son, John F. Jr. of Wellington, Fla.; two daughters, Kelly Walterscheid of Chandler, Ariz. and Karen Stanish of Hollywood, Fla.; a brother, William of Johnson City; four sisters, Margaret Albrechta and Rosemary Wood, both of Binghamton, N.Y., Teresa Hanafin of Endicott, N.Y. and Susan Michalak of Johnson City; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Theresa, in infancy, and Ann Novovesky and a brother, Daniel. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Basil’s Catholic Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, officiating. Burial will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Homer’s, 206 Water St., Dushore.

Paul J. Sayre
WELLSBORO - Paul J. Sayre, 75, of Dartt Settlement Road died Saturday, July 29, 2000, in the Green Home. He and his wife, the former JoAnne A. Feist, observed their 33rd wedding anniversary June 14. He was an independent insurance adjuster for Sayre Claim Service for 35 years. He was past president of the Wellsboro Rotary Club, receiving the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. He was a World War II Army veteran stationed in the Phillipines. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, a lay reader and a member of its men’s group. Born May 15, 1925, in Rochester, N.Y., he was a son of Paul O. and Margaret Reddy Sayre. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Christopher George of Tuscon, Ariz. and Michael Jay of Harrisburg; two daughters, Linda Jean Stauber of Pheonix, Ariz. and Mary Ellen Wilson of Boiling Springs; two brothers, Robert of Penfield, N.Y. and John of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Cecilia of Rochester; and four grandchildren, Christine Stauber, Matthew, Jennifer and Brian. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the church, Pearl Street, with the Rev. Gregory P. Hinton, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Columbarium of the church. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St.

Lena A. Slocum
WELLSBORO - Lena A. Slocum, 95, of Central Avenue died Monday, July 31, 2000, at home. She was chief clerk at PennDOT, Wellsboro, for 38 years. She was a graduate of Charleston High School. She was a member of Wellsboro United methodist Church. She enjoyed bowling, traveling and was a fan of the Atlanta Braves. Born Oct. 23, 1094, in Chatham Township, she was a daughter of Charles and Nettie Rice Slocum Surviving are a companion, June J. Clark, with whom she lived, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St, with Robert Wilcox, her nephew, officiating. Burial will be in Middlebury Union Cemetery, Middlebury Township. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The family will provide the flowers.

George Leonard Snyder Jr.
George Leonard Snyder Jr., 78, of Mill Hall RR2 died Sunday, July 30, 2000, in Lock Haven Hospital. He and his wife, the former Barbara J. Thompson observed their 42nd wedding anniversary July 16. He owned and operated Snyder’s Orchards and Farm until 1992 and retired in 1977 from Jersey Shore Steel Co. after 16 years. He was an expert hunter and trapper. Born June 4, 1922, in Bald Eagle Township, he was a son of George L. and Irene Mayes Snyder. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Cindy Lee Aungst of Woolrich and Kathleen A. Trapp Jr., in Florida; a son, Dale Alan of Mill Hall; two sisters, Betty Jane Orner of Mill Hall and Violet R. Berry of Lock Haven; two brothers, Charles W. of Mill Hall and Richard A. of Virginia Beach, Va.; and six grandchildren. Services will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Wetzler’s, 320 Main St., Mill Hall.

Frank A. Bair
The funeral will be Friday for Frank A. Bair, 91, formerly of Heshbon Road, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Williamsport Home. His wife, the former Lillian P. Usmar, died in 1993. He retired from Avco. He was a 50-year member of John F. Laidlein Lodge 707; a member of Lycoming Royal Arch Chapter 222; Adoniran Council Royal Select Master Mason 26; Baldwin II Commandry 22 Knights Templar; Irem Temple Shrine, Dallas; Zafar Grotto, and the Wheel Inn, Ralston. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. The service will be at 2:30 p.m. at Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St., with the Rev. Kenneth R. Elkin, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Howard A. Crouse
Howard A. Crouse, 60, a city native, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, in Tampa, Fla., where he lived for 10 years. Surviving is a brother, Harry, and many nieces and nephews. Burial will be Wednesday in Tampa.

Danny L. Dawson
Danny L. Dawson, 62, of Northumberland RR 1, formerly of Montoursville, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Mansion Nursing Home, Sunbury. He worked at Lowes Distribution Center, Mt. Carmel, Milton Truck Stop, Paper Magic, Elysburg, and Carlisle War College. He served in the Air Force and Army for a total of 23 years and retired as staff sergeant. He was a member of Mechanicsburg Veterans of Foreign Wars and Point Township Fire Co. Born Oct. 2, 1937, in Rochester, he was a son of Charles and Edith Ross Dawson. Surviving are two sons, David in Ohio and Michael of Aaronsburg; a brother, Charles of Northumberland RR 1; a sister, Beverly J. Simmons in Georgia; and two grandchildren, Frederick and Julia. A graveside service will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Arrangements are being handled by Blank’s, 395 State St., Sunbury.

Gordon Albert Jones
WELLSBORO - Gordon Albert Jones, 79, of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Wellsboro, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, in Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Margaret Glen Wright. He was a retired owner and operator of Jones Auto Body, Wellsboro. A World War II Navy veteran, he was a member of Dewey Heichel Post 4907 Veterans of Foreign Wars and W. Earle Champaign Post 84 American Legion, both in Wellsboro. He also was a member of OSSEA Lodge 317 F&AM and the Moose, in Wellsboro. Surviving are a son, G. Jeffrey of Bombay, N.Y.; two daughters, Susan Jones Sink of Wayne and Jennifer E. of Bradenton, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Jeffrey Scott, Becki Jones Young, Christy Sink Myer and Dana Elgin Sink. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., with the Rev. Gregory P. Hinton, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Eugene Kujawa
Eugene Kujawa, of 470 Mosley Road, Fairport, N.Y., a former resident of the 400 block of Germania St., died Friday, July 21, 2000. His wife, the former Lois Wyman, survives. He retired after 36 years at Zerox, Rochester, N.Y. He was a former member of the Moose here. He was a member and past master of Braman American Legion, Penfield, N.Y., and Perinton Memorial Post Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a World War II Navy veteran in the South Pacific aboard the USS Barton. Born in Renovo, he was a son of Enoch and Frances Boinski Kujawa. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Joyce; a stepdaughter, Donna Jones; two stepsons, Richard and Ronald Spalty; three grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Services were held July 25. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in New York. Arrangements were handled by Keenan’s, 7501 Pittsford-Palymyra Road, Fairport.

Lillian Marie Lewis
Lillian Marie Lewis, 66, of 1508 Light Street, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at home after a lengthy illness. She and her husband, Robert Eugene Lewis, observed their 42nd wedding anniversary Jan. 7. She retired in 1988 from the former Williamsport Paper Box Co. She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church. Born Nov. 3, 1933, in this city, she was a daughter of Clifford and Isabelle Weitzel Webb. She was reared by her mother and grandfather, George E. Weitzel. Surviving, besides her husband, are two sons, David W. McCloskey of this city and Robert D. of Trout Run; two daughters, Jeanette M. Kita of this city and Pamela McCloskey Swinehart of Cogan Station; a sister, Abbie M. Dreher of Hughesville; six grandchildren, Tracy M. and Jeffery M. Kita, Jason M., Eric D. and Nicole A. McCloskey and Bo H. Lewis. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Clinton Richard Musto Jr. and two brothers, Kenneth E. and David L. Weitzel. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, 142 Market St., with the Rev. Kenneth R. Elkin, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Montoursville Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Arrangements are being handled by Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave.

Pearl V. Rader
Pearl V. Rader, 83, of 1044 W. Fourth St., died Monday, July 31, 2000, at home. Arrangements are being handled by Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St.

Nancy Shaffer Schallern
Nancy Shaffer Schallern, 55, formerly a city resident, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at her home in Buford, Ga., after a long illness. Her husband, Eugene Schallern, survives. She was an artist and an executive at AT&T. She worked at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City, and Smithsonian Magazine. She recieved a master certificate in project management from George Washington University in 1992. She was founder and past president of Atlanta Women’s Investment Network and co-founder of a glassblowing studio in Georgia. Born July 28, 1945, in Danville, she was a daughter of Pastor and Mrs. Rollin Shaffer. Surviving, beisdes her husband, are her parents of Venice, Fla.; a brother, Gregory of Oxford, England; and two aunts in this city. Services were held in Georgia.

Peter A. Signore
The funeral will be Thursday for Peter A. Signore, 40, of Elkland Township, Sullivan County, who died Monday, July 31, 2000, in an accident while clearing for a power line cut in a right-of-way in Cascade Township, Lycoming County. He and his wife, the former Linda DiMarco, observed their 22nd wedding anniversary April 15. He was employed by Sullivan County Rural Electric Co., Forksville, and previously at Dennis McCarty Pallet Mill. A 1978 graduate of North Penn High School, Philadelphia, he was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Hugo’s Corners, near Estella. He enjoyed restoring John Deere tractors, hunting, fishing, trapping, camping, whitewater rafting and canoeing. Born July 18, 1960, in Lansdale, he was a son of James J. and Winifred J. Monnot Signore. Surviving, besides his wife, are his parents of Hatfield; three sons, Joshua of Lansdale, Aaron and Jesse, both at home; two daughters, Jennifer and Emily, both at home; two brothers, James of Oneida, N.Y. and Matthew of Hatfield; and three sisters, Dawn Piccione of Ramsen, N.Y., Laurie Lenti of Hatfield and Amy Johnston of Quakertown. Services will be at 2 p.m. at the church, with the Rev. Robert W. Martin, his pastor, and the Rev. Matthew D. Pickering, Millview Wesleyan Church, officiating. Friends may call at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday. Arrangements are being handled by Homer’s, 206 Water St., Dushore.

Joseph R. Szymanski
Joseph R. Szymanski, 74, of Dushore, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2000, at the Highlands, Laporte. His first wife, the former Eleanor Polarski, died in 1981, his second wife, the former Deirdre Dalton, died Jan. 30. He worked for 33 years for Philadelphia Gas Works, Philadelphia. He was a member of Loyalsock Post 996; American Legion, Dushore; Polish American Association, and Joseph Pilsudski Fraternal Association, Philadelphia. Born Nov. 13, 1925, in Philadelphia, he was a son of John and Sophie Sychowski Szymanski. Surviving are two sons, Joe of Bensalem and Mark of Delran; two daughters, Karen of Philadelphia and Ellen Kramer of Dushore; a stepdaughter, Terry Tripodi of Dushore; a brother, Edward of Philadelphia; and 12 grandchildren. A graveside service will be Saturday at Forest Hills Cemetery, Philadelphia. Friends may call at Homer’s, 206 Water St., Dushore, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Irene Berry Barnard
Irene Berry Barnard, 98, formerly of Avis, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at Manor Care Services North, where she had lived since September. Her husband, William H. Barnard, died May 27, 1993. She worked at Piper Aircraft as a draftsman during the war, had a pilot’s license and had flown in the area. She was a graduate of the former Loganton High School and Lock Haven Normal School, now Lock Haven University. She was a member of Avis United Methodist Church. Surviving are a son, Roy W. of Salona; a daughter Florence Mae Lister of Avis; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Yost-Gedon’s, 121 W. Main St., Lock Haven, with the Rev. Keith Rockwell, of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Dunstown Cemetery, Woodward Township, Clinton County. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday.

Thomasine M. Barzona
LOCK HAVEN - Thomasine M. “Tommy” Barzona, 74, of One Cosmos Lane, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at home. She and her husband, Nicholas C. Barzona, observed their 51st wedding anniversary Nov. 25. She was in partnership with Rell Real Estate and previously worked as a federal grants officer in the fiscal affairs office at Lock Haven University, as payroll clerk for Bobby Brooks Co., in the service department of the former Montgomery Ward store and did office work at the former Piper Aircraft. She was a member of Alpine Star Lodge 1827, Order of Sons of Italy in America. She was involved with Milbrook Playhouse, the Heisey Museum, Meals-on-Wheels, and acted as hostess for Susquehanna Trailways. She was an avid sports fan and acted as catcher for the women’s fast softball team in 1945, which participated in the state finals that year. She was a 1943 graduate of Lock haven High School. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and its altar and rosary societies. Born here May 7, 1926, she was a daughter of Dominic and Mary Colaccino Michele. Surviving, besides her husband, are two daughters, Stephanie Ann Hills of Schellsburg and Roxanne Person of State College; two sons, Nicholas Jr. and Michael A., both of Lock Haven; two sisters, Ann Michele of Albuquerque, N.M. and Mary Louise Graziano of Lock Haven; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Angelo D. Michele. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the church, 3 E. Walnut St., with the Rev. Neil R. Dadey as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Friends may call at Moriarty-Dutcavich’s, 112 E. Church St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday with a lodge service at 7:30 and recitation of the rosary at 8.

Gary Bradley Bastian
Gary Bradley Bastian, 56, of San Diego, Calif., nephew of a city man, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000 in University of California, San Diego, Medical Center after a long illness. He was a 1961 graduate of Abington High School, studied mechanical engineering at Duke University on an NROTC scholarship, and was appointed to the U. S. Naval Academy in 1963, graduating in 1967. He was a Vietnam veteran. He received awards and citations including the Air Medal, Air Medal with Bronze Star, Air Medal with Silver Star. Born April 2, 1944, in Washington, D. C., he was a son of Leonard and Vinita Bradley Bastian. Surviving are his parents of Connersville, Ind.; a brother, Kevin of Eureks, Calif.; an uncle; and several cousins in the area. A memorial service was held Friday in the Chapel of the Veterans Memorial Center & Museum of San Diego. Burial will be in Dale Cemetery, Connersville, Ind.
