Marian E. Walton
Marian E. Walton, 79, of 510 Cemetery St., died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Hillside Assisted Living Community following a brief illness. Retiring in 1986, she was employed for 25 years by the Williamsport Area School District as a secretary. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was a member of AARP, the American Business Womens Association, and the Lycoming County Chapter of the PA Association of School Retirees. Born April 27, 1921, in this city, she was a daughter of Raymond H. and Florence M. Hess Lowe. Surviving are a son, Thomas R. of this city; a daughter, Janice L. Sholder of this city; and three grandsons, Robert W. Jr. and Frederic O. Sholder and Tommy Ray Walton. The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy, with the Rev. David L. Weaver officiating. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave.

Nancy M. Koch
MUNCY - Nancy M. Koch, 66, of 3253 Turkey Bottom Road, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Muncy Valley Hospital Emergency Room. She and her husband, Clarence D., observed their 49th wedding anniversary July 20. She was retired from the former GTE Sylvania Plant in Montoursville. She was a 1951 graduate of Millville High School. Born Jan. 5, 1934, in Millville, she was a daughter of Roy and Ruth Greenly Bitler. Surviving, besides her husband, are three sons, Clarence D. II of Williamsport, Brian R. of Muncy and Rodney D. of Montgomery; three daughters, Donna L. Weeks of Pinellas Park, Fla., Gloria M. Butz of Bloomsburg and Charlene M. Anselmo of Sunbury; three brothers, John Bitler of Millville, Thomas Bitler of Macungie and George of Muncy; three sisters, Helen Moore and Tanya DeMott, both of Millville and Dorothy Price of Benton; 19 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Wallis-Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy, with the Rev. Daniel K. Jackson, of Turbotville Independent Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Montgomery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The family will provide the flowers.

William H. Waugh
Accident Victim
William H. Waugh, 59, of 4570 Rt. 87 Highway, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Williamsport Hospital. He and his wife, the former Constance A. Mosier, observed their 40th wedding anniversary Aug. 20. He was employed by Eastern Wood Products. He was a member of Heilman United Methodist Church and a former member of Marsh Hill United Methodist Church. He was an Army veteran. Born July 15, 1941, in Marsh Hill, he was a son of Harry and Evelyn Brady Waugh. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Margery L. Schammel of Baldwin, Md. and Julie E. Fernsler of Montoursville; a brother, John of Marsh Hill; a sister, Laura Waugh of Millville; and four grandchildren. The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, with the Rev. Anthony Alexander, the Williamsport District Superintendent of United Methodist Churches, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday. The family will provide the flowers.

Ronald F. Jones
WELLSBORO - Ronald F. Jones, 59, of this borough, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. He was a life member of the NRA. Born March 22, 1941, in Mineola, N.Y., he was a son of Frederick C. and Dorothy M. Zippel Jones. Surviving are his wife, the former Margaret M. Wagenbrenner; two sons, Ronald C. of Levittown, N.Y. and Buck of Wellsboro; a daughter, Deborah M. of Wellsboro; and two grandsons, Christopher and Keith Jones. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church, in Wellsboro, with the Rev. Michael J. Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in Wellsboro Cemetery. Friends may call at Carleton’s, Wellsboro, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Marjorie C. Haxton
ALBA - Marjorie C. Haxton, 86, of this borough, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Troy Community Hospital. Her husband of more than 52 years, Willis H., died March 6, 1985. She worked as a waitress in the Canton and Troy areas for many years. Previously, she managed the Schmick Ice Cream Parlor in Canton, owned and operated the Cannibal Inn in Canton Township, and supported our country’s war efforts by working at Bendix in Elmira, N.Y. during World War II. She enjoyed camping trips with her family. Born May 3, 1914, in Mansfield, she was a daughter of John H. and Katherine Mae Reese Davis. Surviving are a son, Lee of Chemung, N.Y.; three daughters, Patricia Spencer of Granville Summit, Jacquelyn Spencer of Canton and Linda Hazelton of Chapperal, N.M.; 31 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Willis H. Jr., June 14, 1941, and two daughters, Joan Eileen Cole, Aug. 2, 2000, and Sandra Kaye Hulburt, May 9, 1999. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery, Canton.

Harry ‘Stoner’ Stein
Harry “Stoner” Stein, 94, of Hometown Nursing Center, Tamaqua, father of a Muncy Valley man, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at St. Lukes Miners Memorial Hospital. His wife, Anna C. Stein, died Aug. 18, 2000. He was a life member of the South Ward Fire Company, Tamaqua. He was born in Tamaqua, a son of Christopher “Chris” and Ora Derr Stein. Surviving are four sons, Robert F. of Muncy Valley, George M. of New Ringgold, David J. of Tamaqua, and Mark S. of Augusta, Ga.; two daughters, Marie Lorah and Gladys Stein, both of Tamaqua; a sister, Hazle Fusselman of Tamaqua; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Henry, and sisters Mary Sherry, Dorothy Miller, Florence Eck, and Esther Rebecca Stein. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Zizelmann’s, 500 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, with the Rev. Fred Crawford officiating. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday.

Rose F. Rizzo
Rose F. Rizzo, 81, of 726 W. Third St., died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Williamsport Hospital.
Arrangements are being handled by Crouse’s, 133 E. Third St.

Ethel J. Barton
LOCK HAVEN - Ethel Jeanette Barton, 87, of this city died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, in the Lock Haven Hospital extended care unit. Her husband, Floyd T. Barton, died March 26, 1976. She was a homemaker. Born Aug. 20, 1913, she was a daughter of Clayton and Mary Shoemaker Embick. Surviving are two sons, Floyd T. Jr. of Fort Collins, Colo., and Leonard Lee Sr. of Lock Haven; a daughter, Patricia Ann Weiler of Masonville, Colo.; two sisters, Shirley Geyer of York and Araminta Butler of Greenville, Ohio; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Jeanette Barton-Andrus. A private funeral will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Helt, Hanna, Kline’s, 232 Hogan Blvd., Mill Hall.

Audrie M. Bollinger
Audrie M. Bollinger, 65, of 220 Sawmill Road, Cogan Station, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital, where she had been a patient for the past month. She and her husband, John W. Bollinger Sr., observed their 47th wedding anniversary Aug 1. She was a member of the Salvation Army. She was a member of The Home League and The Golden Age Club, both of the Salvation Army. She was a member of United Commercial Travelers. Born Sept. 11, 1935, in Masten, she was a daughter of John and Edna Dunlap Faulkner. Surviving, besides her husband, are a son, John W. Jr. of this city; a daughter, Patricia A. Loner of this city; three brothers, John Faulkner of this city, Richard Faulkner of South Williamsport and Gordon Faulkner of Montoursville; two sisters, Sarah Miller of this city and Carol June of Cogan Station; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sanders’, 821 Diamond St., with Salvation Army Captains Charles Harris of Elmira, N.Y., and Thomas Lyle of this city officiating. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Montgomery RR 2. Friends may call at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Friday, when United Commercial Travelers will hold a service, followed by visitation until 11 a.m.

Ann R. Fischer
Ann R. Fischer, 92, of 3742 Lycoming Creek Road died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, in Sycamore Manor. Her husband, Edmund “Moot” Fischer, died Nov. 19, 1960. She retired in 1973 from Trimtex. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. She was a member of Top of the Hill Club. Born March 12, 1908, in Exchange, she was a daughter of Earl and Dora Shettler Wagner. Surviving are two sons, Paul of Hughesville and Richard of Ontario, N.Y.; two daughters, Doris Jenks of Montoursville and Esther Greenawalt of this city; two brothers, Randy Wagner of Winter Haven, Fla., and Edmund Wagner of this city; a sister, Violet Wolfe of Muncy; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Lester Wagner, and five sisters, Savanas Wagner, Ocie Vandine, Lillian Vandine, Kathryn Bausinger and Mildred Gresh. A private funeral will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Kaufman’s, 2101 Northway Road.

Grace E. Harper
Grace E. Harper, 98, formerly of 798 W. Edwin St., died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, in Rose View Center. Her husband, Herman R. Harper, died Feb. 6, 1965. She had been employed by the former Newberry and Smith drug stores. She had been a member of Trinity United Methodist Church since 1929. She taught Sunday school for 42 years and held various offices in the church. She was a member of the American Red Cross and had volunteered there since World War I. She was a member of the American Cancer Society, the Williamsport Hospital auxiliary and the Navy Mothers, Susquehanna Branch. She was a member of American Legion Post 1 auxiliary and a past president of the World War I auxiliary. She was a member of Williamsport Lodge 321, Order of the Eastern Star; the Micah Shrine, and the Order of the Arameth, Chapter 125. Born May 24, 1902, in Quiggleville, she was a daughter of William E. and Carrie Ellen Russ Kline. Surviving are a nephew, James E. Doane of Montoursville; and three nieces, Ann L. Kuntz and Janet E. Ardell both of this city and Ann L. Bender of Champaign, Ill. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marguerite E. Schley; a brother, Raymond E. Kline, and a sister, Pearl E. Doane. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church, 1971 Lycoming Creek Road, with the Rev. Melvin D. Bole officiating. Burial will be in St. Michaels Lutheran Church Cemetery, Quiggleville. Friends may call in the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave.

Carl L. Hotchkiss
MANSFIELD - Carl Laverne Hotchkiss, 76, of this borough died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at home. He and his wife, the former Doris I. Maneval, observed their 41st wedding anniversary June 21. He was formerly employed by American LaFrance, Elmira, N.Y.; Dickerson’s Concrete, Youngwood, and Volkswagen of America, New Stanton, until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of United Methodist Church, Wellsboro. He was a graduate of Wellsboro High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in North Africa and Europe. Born March 3, 1924, in Wellsboro, he was a son of Cecil E. Sr. and Ruth F. Root Hotchkiss. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, David E. of Lawrenceville; a daughter, Debra S. Dietrich of Mansfield; a brother, Maurice Hotchkiss of Wellsboro; a sister, Barbara J. Irwin of West Palm Beach, Fla.; three grandsons; a step-granddaughter; two great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil E. Jr. The memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Carleton’s, Wellsboro, with the Rev. Fred E. Hickok officiating. Burial will be in Tioga County Memorial Gardens, Mansfield. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 1 p.m. Friday. The family will provide the flowers.

Helen Lukens Kummer
Helen Lukens Kummer, 85, of Tel Hai Retirement Nursing Home, Honey Brook, a Montgomery native, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, in Honey Brook. She graduated from Montgomery High School, where she won the American Legion medal. She was a 1936 graduate of Lankenau Hospital Nursing School. She was a daughter of Howard and Marian Heilman Lukens. Surviving are her husband, Paul Kummer of Tel Hai; two sons, Thomas of West Chester and Todd of Madison, Wis.; a daughter, Marian Hay of Unionville; a brother, Joseph Lukens of Wichita, Kan.; a stepsister, Sally Rowe of Annapolis, Md.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in January at the Willistown Friends Meeting in Willistown. Burial will be in Willistown Friends Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Founds’, West Chester.

Caroline E. Ohl
Caroline E. Ohl, 84, of Williamsport RR, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, in West Valley Medical Center in Arizona while visiting a daughter. Her husband, Elmer E. Ohl, died in December 1994. She retired in 1977 from the West Company. She was a member of Pine Street United Methodist Church. She was a member of Lodge 480, Order of the Eastern Star. Born Aug. 7, 1916, in Lock Haven, she was a daughter of John E. and Elma T. West Hine. Surviving are two sons, William A. of Bainbridge, N.Y., and Elmer E. III of this city; three daughters, Edith L. Burney of South Williamsport, Sarah L. Ohl of this city and Dorothy J. Smith of Goodyear, Ariz.; a sister, Kathleen Mull of this city; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Levi Hine. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Kaufman’s, 2101 Northway Road, with the Rev. Drue A. Sherman officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Gordon E. Sampsell
WATSONTOWN - Gordon E. Sampsell, 81, of this borough died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. He was a member of Clinton Baptist Church, Montgomery. He was a life member of International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades. He was a member of the Senior Action Center of Upper Northumberland County. He was a pool player, fisherman and hunter and enjoyed woodworking. Until recently, he traveled extensively. Born Nov. 30, 1919, in Springtown, he was a son of David S. and Blanche Kuhns Sampsell. Surviving are a daughter, Leona M. Houseknecht of Hughesville; two stepsons, Thomas Baysore of Milton and David Baysore of Montgomery; two stepdaughters, Joann Rachau of Mill Hall and Linda Greer in South Carolina; a brother, Milford “Junior” Sampsell of Watsontown; three sisters, Martha Ranck, Helen Lehman and Betty Taylor all of Watsontown; a granddaughter, Angela R. Houseknecht; and several step grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his first wife of more than 40 years, Ruth Eichenlaub Sampsell, who died in 1983; his second wife of 13 years, Shirley Thomas Baysore Sampsell, who died in 1997; four brothers, Herman, Franklin, James and David; and a grandson, Michael Houseknecht who died in 1990. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Cronrath’s, 308 Main St., Watsontown, with the Rev. Larry A. LeFeber officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hills Cemetery, Hughesville. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
