Clair A. Miller
Clair A. Miller, 82, of 421 Wyndham Court, formerly of 1141 High St., died Wednesday May 31, 2000, at Sycamore manor. He and his wife, the former Mary Sweigart, observed their 56th wedding anniversary Aug. 7. He retired in 1980 from the Williamsport Area School District as a teacher in Stevens Junior High and Roosevelt Middle schools. He was a graduate of Bloomsburg High School and Bloomsburg University where he earned his baccalaureate and Masters degrees in education. He was a member of Lycoming County Retired Teachers Association, Bloomsburg State Alumni Association and National Education Association. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Born Jan 1, 1918, in Bloomsburg, he was a son of G. Leslie and L. Mae Drumm Miller. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Marc of Muncy and Kris of Dublin, Ohio; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, H. Edmund, and a sister, Mary M. Hartman. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St., with the Rev. James Leuenberger, pastor of Covenant-Central Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday. The family will provide the flowers.

Robert C. Nau
Robert C. Nau, 77, of 6625 Jack’s Hollow Road, Bastress Township, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Manor Care North. His wife, the former Thelma M. Bower, died Feb. 10, 1994. Nau retired as a machinist with Litton Industries. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Nau was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Bastress. He was a member of Leroy O. Buck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7863, DuBoistown; the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 214, and BPO Elks Lodge 1057, both of Jersey Shore; and the Morgan Valley Sportsman’s Association. Born July 16, 1922, in Bastress Township, he was a son of Frank M. Nau and Agnes A. Axeman. He is survived by three sons, James R. of this city, Fred A. of Littleton, Colo., and David J. of Jersey Shore; two daughters, Patricia A. Biser of Jersey Shore and Joan M. Hofmann of Hartleton; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Eugene Nau of Bastress. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence, Edward and Frank, and by two sisters, Frances Wenner and Mary Nau. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday in Immaculate Conception Church, with the Rev. Robert T. Busteed officiating. Burial will follow in the church Cemetery. Friends may call at Noll’s, 1 E. Central Ave., South Williamsport, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. A Rosary service will be at 8:30 p.m.

Lee H. Tierney
MILL HALL - Lee H. Tierney, 73, of 112 Hobson St. died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, in the Lock Haven Hospital Emergency Room. He and his wife, the former Elizabeth Miller, observed their 52nd wedding anniversary May 25. He retired in 1976 as a truck driver for Bolopue Trucking and Ingrams. He retired from the Air Force in 1971 after 20 years of service. He was a member of Pleasant Gap Grange 109, Good Sam Hunting Club and the Clinton County Fair Association. He was a graduate of Bellefonte High School. He was a Protestant. Born Feb. 1, 1927, in Bellefonte, he was a son of Charles A. and Rose Bickle Tierney. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Pamela L. Rissler of Dade City, Fla. and Patricia A. Foskett of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Velda Berger, Violet Albright and Love Confer, all of Bellefonte; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A sister, Beatrice Millward, died May 6. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Wetzler’s, 320 Main St., with the Rev. James H. Redmon, officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Mill Hall. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight.

V. Leone Burchill
JERSEY SHORE - V. Leone Burchill, 90, of Manor Care Health Center, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Jersey Shore Hospital. Her husband George Burchill died April 28, 1948. She worked for Cluette-Peabody, in Williamsport for many years. She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Born March 20, 1910 in Tyrone, she was a daughter of Benjamin F. and Alethia Mae Buzard McBath. Surviving are a daughter, Constance A. Yost of Antes Fort; a son, Richard F. of Longmont, Colo.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Welker’s, 125 N. Main St., with the Revs. Donald Nice and Kerry Aucker officiating. Burial will be in Brisbin Cemetery, Brisbin.

Robert A. Lecce
Robert A. Lecce, 77, of 1040 Mulberry St., Montoursville, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Sycamore Manor. He and his wife, the former Shirley M. Longnecker, observed their 45th wedding anniversary July 10. He retired in 1992 from the Montoursville Area School District as a math teacher and football and basketball coach. He had also served as assistant high school principal, curriculum coordinator and assistant to Dr. John Zimmerman. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a member of Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Born Aug. 14, 1922, in this city, he was a son of Joseph and Rose Peidi Lecce. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Lisa R. at home and Gayle M. of Arlington, Va.; a son, Dr. Carl A. of Middletown, Conn; a brother, James G. of Raleigh, N.C.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph. A Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the church, 100 Walnut St., with the Rev. Thomas P. Shoback, officiating. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville.

Matilda P. Logue
Matilda P. Logue, 89, of 820 Second Ave., died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at home. Her husband, William Logue Sr., died in 1972. She retired after 25 years as a cashier in the cafeteria of Litton Industries, Loyalsock Township. Born April 9, 1911, in Halls Station, she was a daughter of Frank and Myrtle Fox Bordy. Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Hoyt of Loyalsock Township; a son, William G. Jr. of this city; four grandchildren, Meghan M. and Ryan W. Logue, Cassandra A. Gummo and J. Ralph Hoyt III; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Granville and Luther Bordy, and a sister, Florence E. Menne. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, with the Rev. Andrew M. France Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Wild ood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday. The family will provide the flowers.

Ellary R. Auten, 81, of Turbotville RR 1, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at home. Arrangements are being handled by Brooks, 207 Broadway St., Turbotville.

Lawrence E. Mayer, of 1108 Nicely Ave., Montoursville, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. Arrangements are being handled by Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville.

Palmer E. Thomas
COGAN STATION - Palmer E. Thomas, 77, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000. Arrangements are being handled by Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St.

Marjorie B. Raymonds
Marjorie B. Raymonds, 33, of 1720 State St., Harrisburg, daughter of a city woman, died Friday, May 28, 2000, in Dauphin County. She was a cashier. She was a graduate of East Orange High School, East Orange, N.J., in 1984 and attended the former Williamsport Area Community College. She attended Christ Temple, Milton. Born Oct. 20, 1966, in Newark, N.J., she was a daughter of Willie West and Carrline Barney. Surviving are her mother of this city; four sons, Victor Raymonds of Newark, N.J., Talib and Lorenzo Adams, both of Philadelphia and Kingland Barney of Reading; and a sister, Dalina Barney of Newark. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in City Church, 36 E. Fourth St., with Bishop Marvin Reeves officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St.

Lucille Wott Smead
Lucille Wott Smead, 70, a city native, of Radford, Va., died Wednesday, May 31, 2000. She was a member of Grove United Methodist Church, Radford. Surviving are her husband, Edward L. Smead II of Radford; four sons, Lawrence E. of Lewisburg, W.Va., Stephen Alan of Kennesaw, Ga., Kenneth William of Virginia Beach, Va. and Robert Dale of Harrisonburg, Va.; two sisters, virginia Gable of Nashville, Tenn. and Doris Howard of Radcliffe, Ky.; and 11 grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the church, 1020 Tyler Ave, Radford, with the Rev. Warren Stuart, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call in the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Howard M. Starr
Howard M. Starr, 62, of 523 E. Third St. died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at home. He worked for the City of Williamsport Streets and Parks Department. An Army veteran of the Vietnam war, he was a member of Eugene Grafius Post 104 American Legion, Montoursville. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Born Nov. 9, 1937, in this city, he was a son of Howard M. and Martha J. O’Connor Starr Sr. Surviving are a daughter, Trace A. of this city; two sons, Howard T. of this city and Harry L. of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two grandchildren. The services will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave.

Diantha Ellen Webster
Diantha Ellen Webster, 81, of Broad Acres Nursing Home, Wellsboro, died there Wednesday, May 31, 2000. She retired in 1985 from the United States Postal Service as postmaster in Mainesburg and had previously been a teacher at the former State Road and English Center schools. A 25 year member of the East Sullivan Grange she received her Silver Certificate. She was a member of State Road Baptist Church. Born Aug. 28, 1918 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, she was a daughter of Charles and Edna Ashley Webster. Surviving area a niece, Gayle Clark and two nephews, Charles and Jeff Fogelsonger. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert and a sister, Dorotha Fogrlsonger. The funeral will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Scureman’s, 130 S. Main St., Mansfield, with the Rev. David E. Blowers, officiating. Burial will be in Mainesburg Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

R. Clark Eberhart
MIFFLINBURG – R. Clark Eberhart, 79, of 516 Market St., died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at home. He lived in Mifflinburg since 1974 and formerly lived in Swengel and Lewisburg. He and his wife, the former Mildred Jane Feltman, observed their 50th anniversary in April. He graduated from the Lewisburg Area High School in 1940. He retired in 1985 after 39 years of employment as a sprayer in the finishing department of General Interiors, Pennsylvania House Furniture, Lewisburg. He was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and was affiliated with the Calvary Baptist Church. He and his wife served as custodians at St Paul’s for the past 22 years. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was honorablY discharged as a Technician Fifth Grade at IGMR in 1945. He served with the 7th Malaria Survey Unit and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Service Star. Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, David C. and Thomas L., both of Mifflinburg, Robert W. of Milton and Winston H. of Winfield; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandson. He was preceeded in death by two brothers, Paul M. and Theron C. The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the church, 325 Market St. The Rev. Ronald A. Warfle, his pastor, and Rev. Marlin E. Bowes, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Dreisbach Church Cemetery, Buffalo Township, Union County. Friends may call at Schwarts’, 247 Chestnut St. after 7 p.m. Tuesday, and at St. Paul’s on Wednesday morning prior to the service.

Marvin E. Frederick
MIFFLINBURG - Marvin E. Frederick, 66, of Martinsburg, W.Va., a Union County native, died Friday, June 2, 2000, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Martinsburg. He was a retired professional truck driver for Bonded Carrier Trucking Co., where he worked for 15 years. He was a substitute truck driving school instructor for James Ramsey Technical Institute. He also was a driver for Heart Beat Tour Bus Co. He had served as a military police staff sergeant in the Air Force. He was a member of the Watsontown Masonic Lodge 401, F & AM; the AARP; and Big Brothers-Big Sisters for 27 years. His little brother was Todd Nutter. Born Nov. 10, 1933, in Mifflinburg, he was a son of James and Mabel Feher Frederick. Surviving are his wife, Janey Cole Frederick, at home; a daughter, Debra J. Thomas of Williamsport; four sons, David A. of Pennsdale, Kenneth L. of Potts Grove, Thomas E. of Stephens City, Va., and Roderick L. of Martinsburg; 21 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard of Watsontown; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Andrew S.; a granddaughter and a sister, Sandra Cass. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Brown’s, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Everett Powell, officiating. Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery, with military graveside services by the Veterans Combined Honor Guard, Martinsburg. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Max E. Griggs
MILTON – Max E. Griggs, 75, of Milton RR 1, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at his home. He and his wife, the former Gladys J. Hause, observed 53 years of marriage, until her death on Nov. 8, 1998. A self-employed plasterer and contractor, noted for his plaster and concrete sculpting talent, he also constructed the high school mascots: “The Panther” at Milton Area High School, “Eagle” at Warrior Run Area High School and “Brave” at the Shikellamy Field House. He was served in the Navy in World War II in the Pacific Theater on the Destroyer USS Charles J. Badger. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Muncy; the American Legion, Montandon; the National Rifle Association; the Tin Can Sailors Association and the USS Charles J. Badger Association. He was an avid World War II historian, a gardener and artist. Born in Hughesville on Aug. 4, 1924, he was a son of Charles L. and Blanche N. Houseknecht Griggs. Surviving are two daughters, Patricia J. Litwhiler and Dorothy L. Dailey, both of Danville; a son, Max E. Jr. of Milton RR 1; a sister, Josephine Sanders of Williamsport; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Christ Wesleyan Church, Milton RR 1, with the Rev. Arlie E. Davis, officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hughesville, with military honors. Friends may call at Shaw’s, 400 N. Front St.,from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Ernest L. Kimball
Ernest L. Kimball, 86, of 1971 Warrensville Road, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at the Valley View Nursing Home, where he had lived for two months. He and his wife, the former Dorris Carpenter, observed their 58th wedding anniversary on Oct. 8. He had been employed at the former GTE Sylvania plant at Halls Station as a quality control manager before retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Church of Our Saviour in Montoursville. He was a World War II veteran. He was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, Eugene Graffius American Legion Post 104, Roman Lodge 223, F&AM, in Rome N.Y. and Elks Lodge 96 also in Rome. He was nominated for the Govenor’s Silver and Gold Award. His slogan was “Tomorrow is better than today, and today is pretty good.” Born Aug. 11, 1913 in Rome, he was a son of Weslie D. and Elizabeth Smith Kimball. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Alan W. of Pasadena Texas; a daughter Karen K. Horn of this city; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. There will be a private funeral at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville. Burial will be at Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy RR 2. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers.
