A Bit Of History About Early Settlers
Bits of Cobean Genealogy

by B. F. M. McPherson

Early Burials

The genealogical and historical study of Black's (Upper Marsh Creek
Presbyterian) graveyard, including the inscriptions from the tombstones
still remaining in the old burial ground is continued at this time.

6. Fletcher -- "In memory/Ann Fletcher, died March 3, 1773/aged 28
   years."

Note: -- This is the only marked Fletcher grave in Black's graveyard.
There may be, and probably are, other members of the family buried
there in unmarked graves. According to records in the Land Office,
Pennsylvania Department of internal affairs, the Fletchers were
early settlers in the Manor of Masque. The name also appears in the
early session records of the Upper Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church.
In the files of the "Adams Centinel”, under the dates given, the
following data on the Fletcher family is to be found.

Died at age 95

1. Wednesday, April 1, 1612 --

"Died, a short time since Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, aged about
95 years, Mr. John Fletcher. He was an inhabitant of this County
(Adams) for upward of 70 years, and emigrated from hence about two
years since."

Note: -- the John Fletcher mentioned in the above obituary could
have been, and probably was, the father of Ann Fletcher whose grave
is in Black's Graveyard.

2. Wednesday, January 15, 1817 --

"Died, January 12, 1817, a lingering illness, Mrs. Esther Fletcher,
of Cumberland Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, in the 70th
year of her age."

Note: -- Esther Fletcher died at Cumberland Township, and without a
doubt, is buried in an unmarked grave in the family plot in Black's
Graveyard. Nothing further is known pertaining to this member of
the family.

Was Presbyterian Cemetery

3. Wednesday, April 23, 1823 --

"Died, April 11, 1823, Mr. Abraham Fletcher, of Chichester, Adams
County, Pennsylvania, at an advanced age."

Note: -- pints Lutheran Cemetery, located near Chichester, this
County, was at one time, a Presbyterian Cemetery at the oldest
section of this burial ground contains the graves of quite a few of
the early Scotch settlers. If, however, Abraham Fletcher is buried
in this burial ground his greatest unmarked.

4. Wednesday, January 14, 1824 --

"Died, Friday, January 16, 1824, Mr. James Fletcher, of Cumberland
Township, Adams County, and advanced age."

In Unmarked Grave

Note: -- James Fletcher is undoubtedly buried in Black's Graveyard
and an unmarked grave.

7. Hoose -- "here lies the body of John George Hoose /born in
Curhesson, Germany/died September 30, 1853/aged 57 years."

Note: -- in the "Star and Sentinel" for Tuesday, October 13, 1863,
the death of John George Hoose is recorded as follows: -- "died,
October 1, 1863 Mr. George Hoose, of Cumberland Township, this
County, aged about 57 years." There is a discrepancy of one day
in the date of death as given in the published obituary and get
the tombstone inscription. It would be impossible, at this late
date, to choose between the two. John George Hoose was probably
interred in Black's Graveyard because he was a resident of
Cumberland Township, the same district in which the burial ground
is located.

9. Horner -- "Sacred/to the memory of/Margaret/wife of James
Horner/who departed this life/March 14, 1817/In the 47th year of
her age."

Died in 1817

1. Adams Centinel, Wednesday, March 19, 1817 --

"Departed this transitory life, on the morning of March 14, 1870,
Mrs. Margaret Horner, consort of Col. James Horner, a Franklin
Township, this County, after only a few days illness."

9. Horner -- "sacred/to the memory of/Margaret/daughter of J. &
   M. Horner/who departed this life/April 1, 1815/aged 19 years."

1. Adams Centinel, Wednesday, April 5, 1815 --

"Died, Saturday, April 1, 1815, and the 20th year of her age,
Ms. Margaret Horner, daughter of James Horner, Esq., a Franklin
Township, this County."

10. "In memory of/Charles Horner/son of/David Horner/who departed
    this life/April 16/aged two years."
