Robert John Cowell, 30, of Plum, formerly of Wilkins Township, died Nov. 17, 2002. He was the son of former state Rep. Ronald and Virginia Cowell. Mr. Cowell was a graduate of Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Allison (Stewart) Cowell; a brother, Richard Cowell; nephew and niece, Matthew and Sara; father- and mother-in-law, Robert and Tillie Stewart; sisters-in-law, Ericka Cowell and Amy Stewart; and aunts Leslie and Cheryl Cowell. DeMichiei
Emil P. "Nanny" DeMichiei, 80, formerly of the Renton section of Plum Borough, died Nov. 11, 2002. Born in Napoleon, Ohio, he was the son of Giovanni and Virginia (Sanvido) DeMichiei. Mr. DeMichiei was a former coal miner, and later was employed by Republic Steel and PPG Industries. He was an excellent young baseball player and member of semi-pro leagues. He later took up golfing and was a member of Valley View Golf Club. He was a member of VFW, American Legion, Kiwanis International and Renton Italian Club. Mr. Demichiei was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Betty (Maver) Demichiei; his son, Mark Demichiei and his wife, Susan; three grandchildren, Mariel, Matthew and Michael; brothers, Merle, Ray and Verne Demichiei; and a sister, Corrine Pivik of Renton. Friends were received in Ohio at Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home and locally at Stephen P. Dolence Jr. Funeral Home. Mass was at St. Januarius Catholic Church in Renton with the Rev. Rosella M. "Sis" Flaherty died Nov. 17, 2002. Mrs. Flaherty was a charter member of St. Bartholomew Church and former president of the church's Ladies Guild. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Flaherty Sr.; sister-in-law, Catherine Flaherty and two brothers. Surviving are her daughter and caregiver, Catherine Podkul of Murrysville; sons, Terrence of Penn Hills and James Flaherty Jr. and his wife, Kathleen of Murrysville; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Lillian Meinen, 96, of Plum Borough died Nov. 14, 2002. Born in Pittsburgh, she was a retired bookkeeper for a pharmaceutical company. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Meinen. Surviving are her son, Lawrence and Ronald Meinen and his wife, Jo-Ann; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Friends were received at Soxman Funeral Homes. Louis F. "Gigi" Paese, 73, of Plum Borough died Nov. 16, 2002, at William Penn Care Center in Delmont. Born Feb. 17, 1929, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of Luigi and Rachel Paese. Mr. Paese was a retired laborer with P.W. Campbell construction. He was a member of Riverside Community Church in Oakmont. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Ergidia Cosentino; his daughters, Patricia LaMantia of Harrison City and Linda Fedon of Lower Burrell; a son, Richard Paese of Plum Borough; 15 grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Lawrence E. Hardy, 66, of Plum Borough died Nov. 20, 2002, at Forbes Regional Hospital. Born in Providence, R.I., he was a retired purchasing agent and tax preparer. Surviving are his wife, Naomi (Nancy) Hardy; his children, Cheri Lau, Paul and Stephen Hardy. Brothers, Donald Geogerian and George Hardy; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Florence J. (Ellenberger) Thomas, 91, of Penn Hills died Nov. 26, 2002, at St. Andrews Village. Born Oct. 14, 1911, in White Township, Indiana County, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary Jane (Smith) Ellenberger. James Paul Burkhart, 69, of Murrysville died Nov. 17, 2003. He was a long time member of Manor Valley ARP Golf League. Surviving are his wife, Carol (Stango) Burkhart; nephew, Wayne Stango; and other nieces and nephews. Steven E. Hoover, 49, of Penn Hills died Nov. 12, 2003. Born Nov. 18, 1953, he was the son of Edward and Mary Jane Hoover of Penn Hills. He was a 1971 graduate of Penn Hills High School and received his bachelor and master's degrees at the University of Pittsburgh. He was an elementary teacher for more than 20 years in Penn Hills. Mr. Hoover was a former deacon and choir member at Hebron United Presbyterian Church. He had an interest in music, antique cars and movies, both old and new. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sisters, Mary Anne Hoover of San Rafael, Calif., and Linda Hoover Manoli of Churchill; and nephews, Johnny, Charlie, Christian, Hugh Denis and Ned. Evelyne Iervolino died Nov. 15, 2003. She was the receptionist at Gateway Center from the day it opened its doors until her retirement more than 30 years later. Mrs. Iervolino was a member of St. Francis Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Iervolino. Edward Charles Glucs, 78, of Renton, died Nov. 17, 2003, at LifeCare Hospital in Wilkinsburg. Born Nov. 2, 1925, he was the son of John and Mary (Sherbok) Glucs. Mr. Glucs was a retired police dispatcher with 29 years of service with Plum Borough. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of St. Januarius Church, Renton VFD and FOP. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Licia (Pradetto) Glucs; three brothers; and two sisters. Donald R. Pampino, 72, of Penn Hills died Nov. 21, 2003. Gary Francis Vukela, 43, of Pulaski, Pa., formerly of Plum Borough, died Nov. 20, 2003. Born April 7, 1960, he was the son of Catherine Vukela and the late Edward Vukela. Cyrus K. Fox Jr., 80, of Monroeville, formerly of Penn Hills, died July 9, 2003. Mr. Fox was owner for more than 50 years of Fox Office Machines. He was a member of SPEBSQSA barbershop singing group and the Masonic Lodge in Wilkinsburg. As member of the U.S. Navy during World War II, he served as a radio operator on PT boats. He was a judge of elections in Penn Hills for 25 years. Surviving are his wife, Terry (Ritts) Fox; daughters, Jennifer Fogle and Kimberly Ackerman; five grandchildren; and brothers, Arthur and Charles Fox. Friends were received at Charles W. Edward M. Duva Sr., 85, of Apollo died July 16, 2003. Born in Pittsburgh, he was an entrepreneur in the trucking industry. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Charles A. Trathowen Jr., 65, of Plum Borough died July 18, 2003. Born Dec. 5, 1937, in McKeesport, he was the son of Charles Sr. and Zella (Jones) Trathowen. He was a retired service representative for Anderson Equipment Co. of Bridgeville and formerly of Home Depot in Wilkins Township. Mr. Trathowen was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served as past chief, president and life member of Holiday Park Fire Department. He was a member of Holiday Park United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Jeanne (Cunningham) Trathowen; children, Douglas Trathowen of Plum, Sharon Warner of Penn Hills and Amy Kosmack of Plum; eight grandchildren; brother, William Trathowen. Robert F. Burnside, 87, of Plum Borough died July 26, 2003. Born in Glenville, W. Va., he was the son of Robert and Katherine (Fox) Burnside. He was an automotive mechanic and owner of Bernie's Service in Plum, and formerly worked at Milliken Brick, Association Transport and Pittsburgh Motor Coach. He was a member of the Antique Auto Association and Horseless Carriage Club. Surviving are his wife, Mary (McClain) Burnside; children, Ronald and Lawrence Burnside, Kitty Edwards, Jeannie Gray and Debbie Showers; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
