Civitarese
Virginia Civitarese, 88 of Robinson Township died on Saturday, Aug. 18 [2001], in Valley Care Masonic Center. She was born in Loyalhanna Township, Pa., on Sept. 19, 1912 to the late Sabastine and Maria Iezzi. Mrs. Civitarese was a member of the ISDA and the Holy Trinity Young at Heart. She also was a former member of the Ladies Guild at St. James Church that was located in the West End. In her spare time, she enjoyed making crafts with embroidery. Preceding her in death were her husband, Thomas; a sister, Setina D'Amico; a brother, Nicholas Iezzi; a brother, Reno Iezzi; and a sister, Viola Veri. Surviving are two sons, Richard of Grand Rapids, MI, and Vincent of Robinson; sisters, Christina D'Paola of Oakland, Hazel Pesci of McLean, Va., and Margaret Zaffuto of Euclid, Ohio; and daughters-in-laws, Carol Civitarese of Grand Rapids, MI, and Roberta Civitarese of Robinson. Also surviving are four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Friends were received in Joseph M. Somma Funeral Home, Robinson Township. Mass of Christian Burial was held in Holy Trinity Church with the Rev. Robert Herrmann officiating. Internment was in Resurrection Cemetery.

Cornelius
Thomas Cornelius, 69, of Coraopolis, died on Sunday, Sept. 2 [2001], in his residence. He was born in Sewickley on March 4, 1932 to the late Thomas and Julia (Stanton) Cornelius. He retired from Calgon Corp. after serving with the company for 26 years as a chemist. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, past board member of the Railroad Museum in Coraopolis; and an elder at the Presbyterian Church. He contributed time to the Drum & Bugle Corp., loved trains and photography and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Ingram. Surviving are his wife, Leona (Stoner) Cornelius of Coraopolis and children, Constance Buckles of Napa Valley, Calif.; Richard Cornelius of Ambridge; and Amy McClellen of Hopewell. Also surviving are grandchildren, Amanda and Alicia Buckles and Erin, Jared and Emily McClellan. Friends were received at the home of Tom and Leona Cornelius, Coraopolis. A memorial service was held in Providence Presbyterian Church. Copeland's Coraopolis Funeral Home made arrangements. DeAmicis
Maria Filomena (Varrasso) DeAmicis, 99, a resident of Coraopolis all of her adult life, died on Sunday, Aug. 25 [2001] in the Beaver Valley Geriatric Center. She was born in Castiglione A. Casauria, Italy, on Dec. 28, 1901. Mrs. DeAmicis was a homemaker and member of St. Joseph Church and the Sons of Italy. Preceding her in death were her husband Sabatino DeAmicis; a daughter, Marie Croce; a sister, Francesca Varrasso and a brother, Emidio Varrasso. Surviving are her daughters, Anna DiBattista and Ida Stromei, both of Coraopolis; a sister, Donata Varrasso of Italy; and eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Friends were received in A.J. Sanvito Coraopolis Funeral Home. Funeral services were held in St. Joseph Church with the Rev. Tom Wilson officiating. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.

Fanzo
James Fanzo, Jr., 68, of Collier, died on Saturday, Aug. 25 [2001], in his home. He was born in Pittsburgh on July 6, 1933 to the late James and Alice Fanzo, Sr. Mr. Fanzo worked almost 30 years as a truck driver for Motor Freight on the North Side, retiring in 1987. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict and was a member of Teamsters Local 249 and former steward for the union. He was quite the artist in crafting western-style jewelry that he would show at local flea markets such as the one formerly held at Twin Hi-Way Drive-Inn and at Trader Jacks in the South Hills. He also collected baseball cards and enjoyed spending time repairing VCRs. Surviving are his wife, Mary Fanzo of Collier; daughters, Joan of Pueblo-West, Colo., and Kay of Robinson; sons, Gary of Carnegie and James of Collier; sisters, Mary Alice Franco and Donna Fanzo of Maryland; and a brother, Jack Neider of Jennette. Also surviving are four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. There was no visitation. A memorial service was held in Carnegie United Methodist Church with the Rev. Beth Nelson. Joseph M. Somma Funeral Home, Robinson Township, made arrangements.

Morton
Ralph Morton, 74, a Moon Township resident since 1957, died on Wednesday, Aug. 29 [2001], in Ohio Valley General Hospital. He was born in Pittsburgh on Feb. 27, 1927 to the late Samuel Byron and Martha (Holleran) Morton. Mr. Morton retired in 1990 from United Airlines, where he had been an aircraft mechanic for 41 years. He was a member of Sharon Community Presbyterian Church and served in the US Navy during WWII. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Miriam McCurry Morton and three children-Derek and his wife, Becky, of Brandon, Fla.; Jaime and his wife, Michelle, of Crescent; and Lynne and her husband, Anthony Trapuzzano of Robinson. Also surviving are seven grandchildren-Jennifer, Kelsey, Alex, Tia. Lauren, Jaime Leigh and John; a sister, Martha Kimble of Ingram; and a brother, Robert and his wife, Mary Lou, of Cherry Hill, N.J. Preceding him in death was his brother, Frank Morton, formerly of Upper St. Clair. Friends were received in Copeland's Moon Township Funeral Home, where funeral services were held with the Rev. Wasson
Cheryl Wasson, 45, of Hookstown died on Saturday, Aug. 4 [2001], in Sewickley Valley Hospital. She was born in McKees Rocks on Aug. 30, 1955, the daughter of the late John and Genevieve Barlow, Sr. She was a homemaker. Surviving are her husband, Albert Wasson of Hookstown; daughter, Samantha Wasson of Hookstown; son, A.J. Wasson of Hookstown; and a brother, John Barlow, Jr. Friends were received in Joseph M. Somma Funeral Home, Robinson Township. Mass of Christian Burial was held in Holy Trinity Church with the Rev. Jack Fitzgerald officiating. Internment was in Mill Creek Hill Cemetery.

Bardelang
Pauline Florence (Reed) Towne Bardelang, 92, a resident of Neville Island since 1938, died Thursday, July 25 [2002], at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in South Hills. She was born on Oct. 28, 1909, in Pittsburgh to the late Leon and Pauline (Kaiser) Reed. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Arthur E. Towne and Adam A. Bardelang; two sisters, Margaret Robeson and Virginia "Babe" Freehling; and one brother, Thomas Reed. Mrs. Bardelang was a member of Neville Island Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Auxiliary BPOE No.1090 Coraopolis Elks. She worked for Sewickley Valley Hospital for 17 years as a secretary, retiring in 1972. She is survived by two children, Arthur E. Towne and his wife Cheryl of West View and Darla D. Grzybowski and her husband William of South Park; her grandchildren, Scott Towne, Todd Towne, Brian Dowden, Jeffrey Dowden and Sharon Grzybowski; and great-grandchildren, Matthew, Joseph and Mitchell Towne. Friends were received at Coraopolis Copeland's Funeral Home. A service was held in Neville Island Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Richard Anderson officiating. Burial was in Coraopolis Cemetery.

Corbett
Philip C. Corbett, 46, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Coraopolis, died Sunday, Aug. 4 [2002], in Pittsburgh. He was born on Sept. 18, 1955, in Sewickley, to the late Allen and Florence Corbett. He was preceded in death by a brother, Vincent Corbett. He was an armed security guard for AMGARD, a life-long resident of the area and a member of St. Joseph Church. Mr. Corbett is survived by four sisters, Helen Nelson of Ohio, Katherine Lenz of Evans City, and Phyllis and Christine Corbett, both of Coraopolis; and one brother, John Corbett of Huntington, Pa. Friends were received at Anthony J. Sanvito Funeral Home in Coroapolis. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery.

DeLosh
Pearl A. DeLosh, 55, of Imperial, died Thursday, Aug. 1 [2002], after a long illness. She was born on Jan. 16, 1947, in Robinson Township, to the late Charles A. and Anna May (Herbert) Blumling. Surviving are her beloved husband, Stephen DeLosh; her children and their spouses, Karen and Kenny Miller and Charles and Kimberly Hertzer; her brothers and sisters, Pauline Wetsell, Marilyn Gattuso, Theresa Shaytar, Nickolas Blumling, Charles Blumling, Charlotte Easley, John Blumling, Anna Lynn Teyssier and Joseph Blumling; two grandchildren, Austin Miller and Jenna Hertzer; also 24 nieces and nephews. Katherine "Kay" (Anderson) Gargaro of Kennedy Township, died Sunday, July 28 [2002]. She was born in Alabama. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Gargaro. Mrs. Gargaro was a member of Mother of Sorrow's Church. She is survived by three children, Kenneth Gargaro and his wife Jane of Pittsburgh, Charmagne Bossola and her husband Wayne of Pittsburgh and June Henry of Moon Township; two sisters, Margaret Fuller and Shirley Lasse; one brother, Billy Smith; and four grandchildren, Brittany, Brandon, Anne and Katie. Friends were received at Anthony J. Sanvito Funeral Home in Stowe Township. A service was held in Mother of Sorrows Church with the Rev. William Turza officiating. The burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.

Monyak
Steve Monyak, 86, of Robinson Township, died Wednesday, July 10 [2002], at Ohio Valley Hospital. He was born on Dec. 25, 1915, in Vintondale, Pa. Mr. Monyak was a steelworker and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Bessie (Soucher) Monyak; two children, Robert Monyak and his wife Kathleen of Robinson Township and Patricia Monyak of Robinson Township; and two grandchildren, Bryan Monyak and Melissa Monyak, both of Robinson Township. Nichay
Michael Nichay, 54, of Ross Township, formerly of Coraopolis, died Monday, Aug. 5 [2002], at his residence. He was born Aug. 10, 1947, in Sewickley, to the late Michael Nichay and Virginia Nichay Yesnick. Mr. Nichay was an art director for the Pannier Corp. in Gibsonia. He was a veteran in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War. He is survived by a sister, Diana DiVito and her husband Joseph Sr. of Coraopolis; and was the loving uncle of Mary Anne DiVito, Joseph DiVito Jr. and Karen DiVito; and great-uncle of Joseph DiVito III and Marco DiVito. Friends were received at Anthony J. Sanvito Funeral Home in Coraopolis, where a blessing service was held.

Pignanelli
Joseph J. Pignanelli, 72, a life-long resident of Coraopolis, died Friday, July 26 [2002], at Brandywine Hospital in Coatsville, Pa. He was born on July 19, 1930, in Sewickley to the late Joseph and Palma (Galasso) Pignanelli. He was preceded in death by one sister, Sue Brawdy; and two brothers, Augustino (Sam) Pignanelli and Viscot Pignanelli. Mr. Pignanelli was in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict serving as a sergeant for the 87th Infantry. He was a member of VFW Post 402 in Coraopolis. He was retired from J&L Steel in Aliquippa in 1984 after working there for 29 years. He is survived by his wife, Connie L. (Bendlock) Pignanelli of Coraopolis; his children, Palma DePetro and her husband John of Coraopolis and Kimberly Faett and her fiancee Brad Mori of New Brighton; his sisters, Mary White of Hopewell Township, Palma Pignanelli of North Hills and Betty Pignanelli of Florida; a brother, Anthony Frank Pignanelli of Kentucky; and his grandchildren, Bradley DePetro, Mason DePetro, Garret Weber and Morgan Jo Weber. Prete
Josephine (Loria) Prete, 85, of Coraopolis, died Tuesday, July 30 [2002], at Sewickley Hospital. She was born on Jan. 1, 1917, in Boomer, W.Va., to the late Rosario and Rose (Marullo) Loria. She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Prete; and two sisters, Clara Letterle and Mary Centoni. Mrs. Prete was a homemaker and attended St. Joseph Church. She lived in Coraopolis her entire life. She belonged to the Christians Mothers Club. She is survived by two children, Rosalee Prete of Coraopolis and Joseph Prete and his wife Rosie of Hershey, Pa.; one sister, Jennie DePaolis of Hopewell Township; one brother, Bill Loria of Pittsburgh; one grandchild, Julie Sullivan; and two great-grandchildren. Friends were received at Anthony J. Sanvito Funeral Home in Coroapolis. A service was held in St. Joseph Church with the Rev. Malcolm McDonald officiating. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.

Scheller
Walter J. "Gator" Scheller Jr., 47, of Moon Township, died Saturday, July 27 [2002], at Allegheny General Hospital. He was born on Nov. 3, 1954, to Bertha Shaner and Walter J. Scheller Sr. Mr. Scheller was self-employed in construction. Along with his parents, he is survived by his fiancee, Stacie Woods; three daughters, Ashley, Crystal and Brooke Scheller; three step-daughters, Amy and Lisa Woods and Cheryl Arlott; his brother, Raymond Scheller; and four grandchildren, Alyssa, Samantha, McKenzie and Brandon. Friends were received at Copeland's Coraopolis, where a service was held with the Rev. William Hower officiating. Burial was private.

Vogus
Jean Vogus, 76, of Clinton, died Saturday, July 27 [2002], in Kindred Hospital of Pittsburgh in Oakdale. She was born June 29, 1926, in Hancock County, W.Va., to the late Floyd and Retha (Deweese) Jividen. Mrs. Vogus was a homemaker and a member of Clinton Wesleyan Church. Surviving are her children and their spouses, Susan and John Martin of Blairsville, Pa., Danny and Sarah Vogus of England and Tom Vogus and his fiancee Kathy Toth of Clinton; three brothers and their spouses, Bernard and Eva Jividen, Harold and Bonnie Jividen and Norman and Lynn Jividen; and six grandchildren, Kathy and her husband Joe Stufko, Brian and Erin Martin, and Gebhard, Rachel and Caitlin Vogus. Friends were received at Moody Funeral Home in Clinton. Services were held at Clinton Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Ted Chapman officiating. Interment was private in Locust Hill Cemetery, Chester, W.Va.

Ciarallo
George C. Ciarallo, 57, a South Heights resident since 2000, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 24 [2002], at Sewickley Valley Hospital. He was born in Bellevue on Feb. 9, 1945, to Pasqua Ubaldi Ciarallo, of Coraopolis, and the late Costanzo Ciarallo. Mr. Ciarallo was employed by the Coraopolis Borough Water Department for 25 years, retiring in 2000. He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church. In addition to his mother, Mr. Ciarallo is survived by his wife, Marie Ranieri Ciarallo; his three children, Phyllis Esch and her huband Robert of Moon Township, Frank Cox of Crescent, and Christopher Ciarallo of South Heights; his sister, Nancy Bosetti and her husband Ralph of Moon; his sisters and brother-in-law Angie and Ken Gorton of Moon, Mike and Mary Ann Ranieri of Center; four grandchildren, Pamela and Tyler Cox, Joseph Esch and Nicholas Cox. Also, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral arrangemens were handled by Copeland's Moon Township, 981 Brodhead Road. Funeral mass was Saturday with Father Robin Evanish officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hopewell.

Dudash
Joan B. Dudash, 78, a Moon Township resident since 1959, died on Monday, Oct. 21 [2002], at her residence. She was born on March 4, 1924, in Bristol, England, to the late parents, Thomas and Daisy (Harse) Burke. Also preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas, Dennis and Jack Burke. Mrs. Dudash retired in 1982 from Moon Area School District, where she was a secretary for the dietician for 15 years. She also worked for the University of Pittsburgh as cafeteria supervisor, and was secretary for the dean of women. Member of the First Baptist Township, the Hospitality Community, Women's Circle, Crafts for Baptist Home, Ladies Night Out, Sewing Bees and the TAF Sunday School Class. Beloved wife of John W. Dudash for 47 years (Moon Township). Loving mother of Ruth Ciarrocca and her husband James of Redlands, Calif., Sharon Hajostek, Sarah Hajostek and her husband John of Belle Vernon, Denise Claytor and her husband Mark of Coraopolis. Proud grandmother of Elizabeth Ciarrocca, Lindsey Ciarrocca, Michelle Hajostek, Sarah Hajostek, Megan Hajostek, Jennifer Hajostek, Colton Claytor and Jacob Hajostek. Funeral arrangements were handled by Copeland's Moon Township, 981 Brodhead Road. Service was in the First Baptist Church. Langan
Jane M. Langan, 69, a Moon Township resident since 1973, died on Sunday, Oct. 20 [2002], at UPMC Passavant Hospital in North Hills. She was born on Oct. 29, 1932, in Steubenville, Ohio, to the late parents, Joseph and Anna (Pancurak) Chutko. Ms. Langan retired in 1998 after eight years at Westinghouse as a tax clerk. She was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church. She was the beloved wife of Thomas R. Langan for 45 years. Loving mother of Jane E. Langan, of Moon Township, Thomas J. Langan and his wife Melanie, of Meadville. Sister of Bette Perregaux and Anne Zvonar, both of Economy Borough, Peggy Greiff, of Murrysville, Carol McGrath, of Pittsburgh, Joseph Chutko, of Chippewa, and the late Camille Lessyk. Proud grandmother of Crystal Dailey. Funeral arrangement s were made by Copeland's Moon Township, 981 Brodhead Road. Mass of Christian Burial was Thursday at St. Margaret Mary Church in Moon Township, with Father John Ayoob, Pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Resurrection Cemetery. Marszalek
Sister Mary Antonine Marszalek, 93, died on Oct. 17, 2002, at the Felician Sisters Provincial House, Moon Township. She was in her 77th year as a Felician Sister. Sister Mary Antonine was born in North Hampton, and was one of seven children of Mathias and Thecla (Podkul) Marszalek. She entered the Felician Sisters from St. Leocadia (now St. Jude the Apostle) Parish, Wilmerding, in 1925, and received the Felician habit in 1926. She made her first profession of vows in 1927 and pronounced final vows in 1933. In preparation for more than 60 years in educational apostolate, Sister Mary Antonine earned a bachelor of arts degree from Mt. Mercy College and a master's degree in education from Duquesne University. She was a teacher and principal in Catholic elementary schools of the dioceses of Pittsburgh, Erie, Wheeling, Altoona-Johnstown, Harrisburg and Greensburg. In addition, she served her sisters as local minister in seven of the convents in which she resided. In 1993, Sister Mary Antonine retired to the provincial house where she served on the staff of St. Joseph Hall Infirmary with various responsibilities. Remarkably fit and alert for her age, she experienced a steady decline in health in recent months. Sister Mary Antonine was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and four brothers. She is survived by nieces and nephews. Friends were received at the Sanvito Funeral Home, 1316 Fourth Avenue, Coraopolis. On Oct. 20. A vigil service was held. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Oct. 21, in St. Joseph Church. Interment followed in the Felician Cemetery in Moon Township. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Felician Sisters Renovation Fund, 1500 Woodcrest Avenue, Coraopolis, Pa., 15108, ot a charity of the donor's choice.

Parpovich
Samuel Parpovich, 77, a life-long resident of Pittsburgh, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 19 [2002], at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital of Pittsburgh. He was born on April 13, 1925, in Pittsburgh, to the late Elia and Mary (Yevins) Parpovich. Mr. Parpovich retired from Yellow Cab in 1996. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, EAME Theater Service Medal with one Bronze Star and the Victory Medal. He was a member of the VFW in Oakland. He is survived by his brother in law, Robert Rees, of Robinson Township; his cousin, Edward Elias, of Kennedy; his niece, Roberta "Bobbi" Cramer and her husband Terry of Coraopolis; his great niece Kelli Kania and her husband Michael of Moon; his second cousins Pam Kilbride and her husband Jack of Tampa, Fla., and Cherie Lang and her husband Rev. Richard Lang. Also, other nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister Helen Rees. Visitation was at Copeland's Coraopolis, 867 Fifth Avenue, where Mass of Christian Burial was held. Military honor burial followed at Resurrection Cemetery. Rev. Richard Lang officiated.

Phillips
Michael B. Phillips, 48, of Oakdale and Moon Township, died unexpectedly on Oct. 11 [2002], at Sewickley Valley Hospital. Mr. Phillips was born on Sept. 16, 1954, in Sewickley to Georgia R. Swoager Phillips of Oakdale and the late Thomas F. "Duke" Phillips. An avid golfer, Mr. Phillips had worked in the food service industry. In addition to his mother, Mr. Phillips is survived by his fiancee Jennifer Johns, of Moon Township; a brother, Thomas Phillips, of Cecil; and a sister, Carol Newnam, of Oakdale; and numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation will take place with a private memorial service to be held at a later date. Arrangements were entrusted to the Moody Funeral Home in Clinton.

Sambolt
Cecelia (Preininger) Sambold, 90, a life-long resident of Coraopolis, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 16 [2002], at St. Margaret Hospital. She was born in Coraopolis on Aug. 11, 1912, to the late Francis (Frank) and Cecelia (Urban) Preininger. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband John J. Sambolt Jr., on March 16, 1998. Mrs. Sambolt was a member of St. Joseph Church and a homemaker. She devoted her entire life to her children, grandchildren and family. She is survived by her five children, John Sambolt and his wife Pearl, of Coraopolis, Marie Aiello, of Moon, Cecelia Eisert and her husband Richard, of Erie, Margaret Hughes and her husband Frank, of New Wilmington, and James Sambolt and his wife Christine, of South Park. Also, 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Georgie Hepler; her four sisters, Alfreda Tesla, Elsie Weber, Amelia Mahr and Mathilda Zieger; her three brothers, Frank, Ed and George Preininger. Funeral arrangements were made by Copeland's Coraopolis, 867 Fifth Avenue. Funeral Mass was at St. Joseph Church with Father Malcolm McDonald officiating. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.
