Bell
Mildred M. Bell, 82, of Oakmont, formerly of New Kensington, died Jan. 21, 2003, in UPMC Shadyside. Born April 11, 1920, in Europe, she was the daughter of Albert and Rose Melich. She was a former member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in New Kensington. Surviving are her husband, John Bell Jr.; sons, John Bell III of Penn Hills and Albert Bell of Italy; a granddaughter, Nicole Menser of Brooklyn; and a great-granddaughter, Vandana Menser. Arrangements were handled by Burket-Truby Funeral Home.

Kern
Shirley Ann Kern, 65, of Oakmont died Jan. 24, 2003. Born Oct. 15, 1937, in Russelton, Pa., she was the daughter of Miller and Amelia Bizich. She worked for 27 years in the shipping department of Rob Roy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Kern Sr. Surviving are her children, Paul Kern of Oakmont, Lisa Boris of Saxonburg, Lori Smart of Penn Hills and Janet Kern of Verona; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and sister, Nancy Edwards of Russelton. A memorial service was at Thomas D. English Funeral Home.

Tierno
John R. Tierno, 81, of Verona died March 13, 2003, at Beverly Health Care in Oakmont. Born April 22, 1921, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of Ross and Jennie (Tramone) Tierno. He was a laborer for Dominion People Gas in Wilkinsburg. Mr. Tierno was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his sisters, Mary Ann Carsey and Elizabeth Sipper, both of Verona; and many nieces and nephews. Friends were received at Burket-Truby Funeral Home. Interment was at Lakewood Memorial Gardens.

Fescemyer
Anne Elizabeth Schmidt Fescemyer, 98, formerly of Oakmont, died at Concordia Lutheran Home in Cabot. Born July 17, 1904, in Oakmont, she was the daughter of Henry and Anna (Schirm) Schmidt. She at one time had been a clerk at the former Robson Bakery in Oakmont-Verona. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Irving Fescemyer; and her daughter, Karen (Fescemyer) Gorski. Surviving are her sisters, Margaret Schmidt and Elizabeth Beals; and several nieces and nephews including Barbara Beers of Akron and Mary Margaret Zoller of Oakmont. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Oakmont. Friends will be received an hour prior.

Thompson
Clarence C. Thompson, 73, of Springdale died March 11, 2003, at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital. Born in Tarentum, he was the son of Clarence and Helen (Smith) Thompson. Mr. Thompson was a retired office worker with Bethlehem Steel. A corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. Surviving are his son, Samuel Thompson of San Jose, Calif.; brothers, Gregg and J. Thomas Neel; sisters, Alice Grant and Mary Anne Thompson; two grandchildren, McKinley and Mia Thompson. Friends were received at Burket-Truby Funeral Home.

Lardas
Mary J. Lardas, 74, of Mt. Lebanon died March 16, 2003. Surviving are her sister, Bessie Loizes; and a niece, Stella Kallis. Friends were received at Thomas D. English Funeral Home. A service will be at noon today (Wednesday) at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Mt. Lebanon.

Champlain
Darrell K. Champlain, 77, of Penn Hills died March 15, 2003, at Forbes Hospital. Born Sept. 30, 1925, she was the son of Calvin and Claire (Schwer) Kendall. Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Edward Champlain; her children, Mark of Penn Hills and Jim Champlain of Fox Chapel, and Kim Rizzelli of Wilkins Township; a brother, Kenneth Kendall of Ligonier; and three grandchildren. Friends were received at Burket-Truby Funeral Home. Interment was at Plum Creek Cemetery.

Bailey
Blanche D. Bailey, 88, formerly of Wilkinsburg, died March 12, 2003. Born March 4, 1915, in McDonald, she was a longtime member of Advent Lutheran Church, Alter Guild, Daughters of the American Revolution, AARP and Eastern Star. She attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Grace Martin's School. Friends were received at Thomas D. English Funeral Home.

Weimerskirch
Anna 'Dot' Weimerskirch, 78, of Verona died March 11, 2003, in Tandem Health Care of Cheswick. Born Oct. 15, 1924, in Verona, she was the daughter of George and Margaret (Clarke) Weimerskirch. She was a retired bus driver for Penn Hills School District. Mrs. Weimerskirch was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Verona. Surviving are her brother, Raymond Weimerskirch of Harmar; and sister, Catherine Baratta of Penn Hills. Friends were received at Burket-Truby Funeral Home. Mass was at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment was at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Zalar
Joseph W. Zalar, 69, of Oakmont died March 5, 2003, at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital. Born April 25, 1933, in Onnalinda, Pa., he was the son of John and Rose (Turk) Zalar. Mr. Zalar was retired from the rolling mill at the former Edgewater Steel Co. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a 25-year member of Oakmont fire department. Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Dolores Zalar; stepchildren, Larry and Sherry McNeil; sister, Frances Litchenstein; and two grandchildren, Jake and Mindy McNeil. Friends were received at Burket-Truby Funeral Home. Interment was at Verona Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer and Lung Association.

Gasper
Viola Gasper, 97, of Oakmont died March 12, 2003, at The Willows of Presbyterian SeniorCare in Oakmont. Born in Oct. 4, 1905, in Krackow, Poland, she was the daughter of Yan and Josefa Ruszkiewicz. She was a member of St. Irenaeus Roman Catholic Church in Oakmont. She was a member of Christian Mothers and the former Oakmont Women's Club. Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Mastandrea of Springdale Township; four grandchildren, Jody Sparm-black, Timothy Gasper, Lynn and Mark Mastandrea; and a great-granddaughter. In addition to parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Gasper; and a son, Robert Gasper. Friends were received at Burket-Truby Funeral Home. Mass was at St. Irenaeus Church with the Rev. Paul Cwynar officiating. Interment was at Verona Cemetery.

Beals
Ruth Elizabeth Beals died March 24, 2003, at St. Luke's Lutheran Community in North Canton, Ohio. Born July 5, 1913, in Oakmont, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Schirm) Schmidt, she was a Duff's Business School graduate. Mrs. Beals was a former secretary at Gulf Research and Development Co. during World War II. Surviving are her daughter, Barbara Beers of Akron, Ohio, and her husband, Bill; grandson, Dr. Kenneth Beers of Boston; and sister, Margaret Schmidt. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ken Beals; sister, Anne Fescemyer; and brothers, Fred, George, Harry, John and Charles Schmidt. A viewing will be at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Oakmont at 10 a.m. Saturday. A service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Oakmont Verona Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Tilford
Robert J. Tilford, 67, of Verona died March 18, 2003. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Patricia Tilford; brothers, Jack and Lloyd Tilford; and sisters, Audrey Tilford and Dolores Burns. Private arrangements were handled by Thomas D. English Funeral Home.

Canuti
Bruno A. Canuti, formerly of Murrysville, died March 16, 2003, in Marina del Rey, Calif. Born April 10, 1930, in Oakmont, he was the son of Gregory and Brunetta Canuti Lombardi. He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Canuti was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He enjoyed walking by the ocean collecting seashells and was a humorous storyteller. Surviving are his wife, Sil (Menold) Canuti; son, Allen Canuti and his wife, Donna, of Scottsdale; daughter, Cathi Canuti of Marina del Rey, Calif.; sisters, Dolores Banchiere of Lewistown and Leah Lott of Oakmont; half-sister, Corinthia Canuti; and half-brother, Bennett Canuti. Funeral arrangements were handled by Accord Cremation Services in California.

McDonough
Gladys Mae McDonough, 89, of Shippenville, Pa., formerly of Oakmont, died March 22, 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas 'Tammy' McDonough; and her daughter, Catherine Patty McDonough. Surviving are her daughter, Donna McDonough of Shippenville, Pa.; sister, Cecelia Walker of Oakmont; and brothers, Luke Tucci of Oakmont and Raymond McCabe of Pittsburgh. Stitt
Helen M. Stitt, 84, of Harmar died March 23, 2003, in Allegheny Valley Hospital. Born July 19, 1918, in Oakmont, she was the daughter of Frank and Helen (Gibson) McCandless. She was a 1936 graduate of Oakmont High School. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grant Stitt. Surviving are a son, G. Curry (Susan) Stitt of Charleroi; and a grandson, Grant Stitt III. Mrs. Stitt was a life member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and a former matron and member of Order of Amaranth. Friends were received at Burket-Truby Funeral Home. A service will be at 11:30 a.m. today (Wednesday) at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with the Rev. Jeffrey Murph officiating. Munroe
Marian W. Munroe, 82, of Churchill, formerly of Oakmont, died March 21, 2003. Born July 12, 1920, in Oakmont, she was the daughter of Edward and Bessie Mae (Leonard) Winkleman. She was a retired secretary. Mrs. Munroe was a member of Beulah Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents, she was prceded in death by her husband, Donald Munroe; and a brother, Edward Winkleman. Surviving are her sister, Elizabeth Eaton of Oakmont; brother, William Winkleman of Oakmont; and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, at Beulah Presbyterian Church. Private interment was at Verona Cemetery, Oakmont. Alston
Harry H. Alston, 80, of Oakmont died May 30, 2003, at the John Heinz Memorial Veteran Hospital in O'Hara. Born Jan. 17, 1923, in Oakmont, he was the son of Jacob and Halloo (Watkins) Alston. He was a World War II Navy veteran. Before retiring, he was a chauffeur for families in Oakmont and Fox Chapel. Surviving are his sisters, Dorothy Poynter of Washington, D.C., Pearl Gaston of Penn Hills and June Brown of Apollo; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Alston; and sisters, Anna Mountain and Evelyn Pollard. Friends were received at Burket-Truby Funeral Home. Cleland
Hazel Cleland, 95, of the Rosedale section of Penn Hills died May 23, 2003. Mrs. Cleland retire after 32 years as a third'grade teacher at William Penn School in Penn Hills. She was a founding member of Rosedale Methodist Church and a former member and past matron of Verona Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. Bash Cleland; her parents, William and Anna (Miller) Hochberg; and a brother and a sister. Surviving are her daughter, Carolyn Carroll and her husband, the Rev. William; sisters, Ruth Woodruff, Grace Heltzell and Wilma Heath; grandchildren, William Carroll and Ann O'Brien; and two great-grandchildren. Friends were received at Burket-Truby Funeral Home. Barbara A. Clutter, 72, of Penn Hills died May 25, 2003, at St. Margaret Hospital. Born Sept. 12, 1930, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of Robert and Mildred (Warren) McDade. Surviving are her husband of 43 years, Paul Clutter; children, Holly Lewandowski of Oakmont and Cindy Jo Moroney of Verona; brother, Robert McDade; and grandchildren, Patrick, Marcus and Megan. Gee
Byron F. Gee Jr. of Harmar died May 31, 2003. Born Sept. 26, 1934, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of Byron and Edna Mae McBrien Gee Sr. Mr. Gee was a retired postal carrier in Blawnox and Squirrel Hill. A U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Harmar and the Elks in Oakmont. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Ruth Stevens Gee; daughters, Janice Nash of South Park and Carolyn Funk of Indiana Township; a brother, William Gee; five grandchildren; and his mother-in-law, Lillian Stevens of Emsworth.
