Wedeen
Hannah Wedeen, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and community volunteer, passed away as the result of a terminal illness on May 31, 2002. In the last 10 weeks of her life, Hannah made a conscious and courageous effort to reach out to her family and friends to share her love and appreciation. She often said she had no regrets as she had lived a full and rewarding life. Hannah was born in Mainz, Germany, the daughter of a wine merchant and cattle dealer. She and her family fled Nazi Germany and settled in rural upper New York state when she was nine years old. After learning to speak English by listening to the radio, Hannah graduated from high school as valedictorian of her class. She went on to earn a bachelor of arts degree from Cornell University, where she met and married her husband, Marvin, and they began their 54-year love affair. After working for many years in the dairy industry, Marvin changed his career to one in hospital administration. While he attended Columbia University for retraining, Hannah, now the mother of two daughters, worked for Cornell University Medical School as editor of psychiatric journals to support her family. The Wedeens moved to Sewickley in 1972 when Marvin became assistant administrator of Sewickley Valley Hospital. There began Hannah's years of service as a community volunteer and a true Ambassador of Sewickley. In addition to entertaining and welcoming a myriad of physician recruits to the area, Hannah delighted in hosting dinner parties and "mixing up" her very diverse group of friends. She was a longtime member of the Grapevine Garden Club, where she served as a "field hand"; a devoted and enthusiastic participant in several weekly duplicate bridge games; a good-sported participant in many tennis and paddle-tennis Round Robins; and a regular at Betty Morrow's enthralling literature classes. She served for years on the board of directors of the Union Aid Society, as treasurer for Beth Samuel Jewish Center in Ambridge and on the board of the Sewickley Valley YMCA, where she claimed she endured her regular exercise regime by gawking at the "handsome specimens." Regularly returning to her Alma Mater, Cornell University, for Alumni University, reunions and attending special events in the Greater Pittsburgh area, Hannah and Marvin most recently chaired the 50th annual reunion of their graduating class. They often visited and traveled with their close circle of college friends. Hannah was an avid world traveler and especially enjoyed having her grandchildren accompany her and Marvin on trips abroad, always offering a history lesson as a sideline. She had a tremendous appetite for music, the arts and fine, exotic cuisines. She believed passionately that everyone needed culture, education and to serve their community. She was a devotee of Pittsburgh theater, museums, symphony, jazz and chamber music concerts. Hannah is survived by her husband, Marvin Wedeen; two daughters, Rachel Wedeen of Aptos, Calif., and Miriam Johnson of Ross Township; grandchildren, Eric, Courtney and Nathaniel Dixon from Ross Township; and sister Ruth Gordon, her bridge mentor, of Long Boat Key, Fla. Hannah made a lasting impression on all she met and the community on her. In her last weeks, she was especially grateful for the outpouring of love bestowed on her and on Marvin by her many friends. "Whatever you love, you are." Rumi. Friends were received at Beth Samuel Jewish Center in Ambridge on Sunday. Memorials may be made in her name to G.
