Fred G. Sutton, age 52, of Camptown, Wyalusing Township, PA, passed away on Saturday evening, Dec. 8, 2001 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. Born on Sept. 30, 1949 in Sayre, he was the son of Cora Kithcart Sutton and the late Frederick Sutton. He has been a resident of Camptown for 13 years, and prior to that, lived in the New Era. His employment included J.R. Morgan Chevrolet in LeRaysville, Rought’s in LeRaysville, Jones Garage in Rome and was employed by U.S. Seal in West Wyoming as a truck driver until his illness wouldn’t allow him to continue. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 534 of Wyalusing. Fred enjoyed NASCAR racing and was an Earnhardt fan and enjoyed time spent playing darts and pool. He left surviving his wife, Wanda Kobbe Sutton of Wyalusing; his children, Denise Sutton of Burlington, Betsy (Tom) Armitage, Jr. of Wyalusing, Cory (Cassie) Sutton of Stevenville; his grandchildren, Eric Sutton of Towanda, Cody and Kyle Sutton of Germany, Jordan, Taylor and Kelsy Armitage of Wyalusing, Tyler, Kayleen and Morgan Sutton of Stevensville; his mother, Cora Sutton of Camptown; sisters, Beverly Sutton and friend, Kerry Detrick of Sugar Run, Barbara and Bruce Williams of Warren Center and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Frederick Sutton in 1986 and a son, Kevin Sutton, in 1997. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 13 at 1 p.m. in the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing, with the Rev. Larry Thomas of New Milford officiating. Interment will follow in Camptown Cemetery. Friends and family called on Wednesday evening, Dec. 12 at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m.

Mrs. Eugenia Estelle Steafather

Mrs. Eugenia Estelle Steafather, 91, of El Cajon, CA, formerly of Dushore, PA, died on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001 at Alvardo Hospital, San Diego, CA. Estelle was born on Nov. 25, 1910 to Maynard Henry and Maude Agethal Stevens Steele in Wilmot Township, Bradford County, PA. She attended the New Albany Vocational High School and continued on to graduate from Scranton School of Beauty. She married Gale Steafather on March 18, 1943. He predeceased her on Dec. 28, 1991. Estelle and Gale lived on German Street in Dushore where she owned and operated a Gift Boutique and Beauty Shoppe until Gale’s transfer in 1969 to Foremost Dairy, San Diego, CA. She was a member of the Melody Lane Lutheran Church in El Cajon and formerly a member of Zion’s Chapel Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Dushore. She was also a member of the Wyalusing Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Estelle was predeceased by her daughter, Harriet Steafather-Morrissey, July 21, 2001, her sister, Vuriel Robinson Browning, May 31, 1992 and an infant brother, Henry Steele. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, William and Rebecca Steafather of Groton, CT; granddaughters, Sheryl and Amy Steafather of Groton, CT; great-granddaughters, Emily and Maggie Hedrick of Groton, CT a son-in-law, Roy Morrissey of Springfield, NJ and two nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 10 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St. in Dushore, with the Rev. Eddie A. Nilsen, pastor of Zion Chapel, officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Dushore.

Clifford E. Palmer

Clifford E. Palmer, age 91, of DarWay Nursing Home in Estella, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001 at Towanda Memorial Hospital after an illness. He was a former resident of Lynn, PA. Born on June 23, 1910 in Rush, he was a son of the late Harry and Ethel Garrison Palmer. He was married to Helen Lyman, who predeceased him on Feb. 12, 1994. He was employed as a milk tester and dairy farmer. A graduate of Springville High School, he also attended Delhi Agricultural College. Mr. Palmer was a former member of the Lynn Independent Order of Odd Fellows, D.H.I.A. and Dairy Tester’s Association. He also belonged to the Springville Vol. Fire Co. Survivors include a daughter, Gertrude Gunnoe, Norfolk, MS; four sons, Clifford, DarWay Nursing Home, Forksville, A. Lyman and Fay, Springville, Rev. Stephen of Flanders, NJ; a sister, Mrs. Jean Bunnell of Springville; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchild-ren; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude and three brothers, Bruce, Clifton and Theron. Services will be held at Lynn Community Church on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Edwin Simmons of the Lemon United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Lynn Cemetery. Friends and family may call one hour prior to the services at the church. Arrangements were entrusted to the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock.

Roger M. Moore

Roger M. Moore, 41, died on Friday, Dec. 7, 2001 in Rush Township, as a result of a hunting accident. Born Oct. 31, 1960 in Sayre, he was the son of Gordon and Jean M. Blend Moore, who live in Rush. On June 23, 1984, he was married to Terry Ann Shaffer, who survives. A 1978 graduate of Elk Lake High School, he was an independent truck driver who hauled cattle to the Taylor Packing Company, Inc. He was a member of the Rush Volunteer Fire Company and enjoyed hunting, NASCAR and four wheeling. In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include his baby daughter, Rachel Lee, at home; sisters and brothers-in-law, Deborah and Steve Grow of Factoryville, Patricia and Richard Stastny of Erieville, NY; a brother and sister-in-law, Gordon, Jr. and Marie Moore of Lawton; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Betty Shaffer of Camptown; sisters-in-law and their spouses, Tammy and Michael Darling of Rush, Lori Lee and Daniel Barr of New Albany; a brother-in-law, Robert Shaffer, Jr. of Rush; nephews and spouses, Gordon "Mac" and Lisa Moore, III, Chad Moore, Alan and Erica Grow, Sean and Sherry Grow, Jason Stastny, Dennis Moore, Jr., Dean Moore, Brian Darling, Snyder Barr; nieces and spouse, Stephanie and Sargent Gregory, Ashley Moore, Kelly Darling; several great-nephews and nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins. A brother, Dennis Moore, and a sister, Linda Moore, predeceased him. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at the Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., 74 Church St., Montrose. The family received friends on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Rachel Wells Meyers

Mrs. Rachel Wells Meyers, age 86, of Wyalusing, PA, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of the Memorial Hospital, Towanda. Rachel was born in Wyalusing on April 8, 1915, daughter of the late Francis and Emma Ruff Wells. She graduated from the Wyalusing High School, a member of the Class of 1931. She received her BS in Education from the Wilson College in Chambersburg in 1935. She taught junior high in Towanda from 1936 to 1941. Rachel then moved to Great Neck, LI where she began teaching at the Great Neck Middle School in 1941. While teaching at Great Neck, Rachel received her MS from Columbia University in New York City. In 1970, she retired from Great Neck after 29 years of service and moved back to Wyalusing. Rachel was married to Milton Meyers of Flushing, NY in 1952 and he predeceased her in 1968. Rachel was a resident of the Wyalusing Personal Care Home for the past two years. She was a member of the Wyalusing Presbyterian Church. Surviving is one sister, Marion Wells of Sayre. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 11:30 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Barry R. Ballard, her pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Wyalusing Cemetery. Friends called on Wednesday morning from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials are directed to the American Cancer Society, Bradford Unit, 1948 Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701-3945 or to the American Heart Association, NE Regional Office, 63 N. Wheaton D. Fassett, Sr.

Mr. Wheaton D. Fassett, Sr., age 73, of Valley Crest Nursing Center, Wilkes-Barre, formerly of Jenningsville, PA, passed away on Monday afternoon, Dec. 3, 2001 at the Valley Crest Nursing Center. Mr. Fassett had been a resident of the center for the last 15 years. He was born in Jenningsville on Oct. 14, 1928, the son of the late David Wheaton and Hattie Bronson Fassett. For most of his life, he was a self-employed carpenter in the Wyoming County area. Surviving are a daughter, Cathy Hamner of Kirkwood, NY; four sons, Allen Fassett of Laceyville, Mark Fassett of Harpursville, NY, Wheaton Fassett, Jr. and Timothy Fassett, both of Mehoopany; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Wayne David Fassett and Stephen Fassett. A graveside service will be held on Thursday morning, Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. from the Forkston Cemetery in Forkston, with Pastor Doug Mills of the Lovelton Bible Church, officiating. Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville.

Byron W. "Bob" Wilbur

Byron W. "Bob" Wilbur, 96, of Spring Hill, Wyalusing RR1, formerly of Towanda, PA, passed away of declining health Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001 at the Skilled Nursing Unit, Memorial Hospital, Towanda, while under the care of the staff of whom he had grown so fond over the years. Born in Burlington Township on May 10, 1905, he was the son of Howard and Nellie Spencer Wilbur. In 1926, he married Eleanor Kerrick, who passed away in 1972. Bob and Eleanor had four children, Marjorie, Janice, Richard and Ginny. In 1974, Bob married Pauline Bride, who passed away in 1999. When his health began to fail, he moved to the home of Ginny and Dan Mathis on Spring Hill and enjoyed participating in community activities. Mr. Wilbur spent most of his life in the automotive industry. The last thirty years of his employment were spent as service manager for Perry Motor Co., later to become Ferrario’s. These years brought to him a host of friends and acquaintances. He loved to tell stories of his experiences to his family, which were actually a depiction of the development of the automotive industry, as well as the Towanda-Wysox area. Spending most of his early years on the Burlington farm of A.C. Spencer, his grandfather, Mr. Wilbur maintained an avid interest in farming all his life. Until the age of 91, Bob enjoyed a large garden. Jigsaw puzzles were a favorite pastime and his completed, framed puzzles decorated his room in Skilled Nursing. The staff members throughout the facility would run in to put a piece in or to admire the newest completed puzzle, he enjoyed this interaction very much. Surviving are his children, Marjorie Tompkins of Hampton, FL, Janice and Michael Soloway of Myrtle Beach, SC, Ginny and Dan Mathis of Spring Hill, Richard Wilbur of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ruth Young, Towanda; a special friend, Connie Wilson of Laceyville. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Wilbur. The family received friends on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda. A recitation of the rosary was held Friday evening at 8:45 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Ronald Hughes leading the prayers. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. at the SS Peter and Paul Church, Third St., Towanda, with the Rev. Ronald Hughes as celebrant. Assisting at the altar were Rachel Christian and Jenny Joyce. Instrumentalist was Joel Christian. Readers were Lindy and Lindsay Cole. Giftbearers were Kevin Cole and Michael Mathis. Interment was in the French Asylum Cemetery, Asylum Township. Pallbearers were Michael Mathis, Daniel Mathis, Dr. E. Barton Young, James Lordi, Kevin Cole and David McDonough. The family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to Skilled Nursing Unit, Memorial Hospital, One Hospital Drive, Towanda, PA 18848 in Mr. Wilbur’s memory.

David G. Snell

David G. Snell, 77, well-known former Wysox businessman, passed away on Thursday evening, Nov. 29, 2001 at his home in Lake Wales, FL following an apparent heart attack. Born Feb. 26, 1924 in Towanda, he was a son of the late Paul and Daisy Sill Snell. David was a graduate of Towanda High School in June of 1942 and subsequently served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre as a metal smith aboard the USS Essex in the Marine Fighting Squadron 124. This squadron was the first Marine squadron to operate from a carrier. They were also the first squadron to operate the F4U Consair during World War II. He participated in Luzon, Iwo Jima and strikes against Japan operations. Following his honorable discharge from the military as a sergeant TAD, in February of 1946, he entered the Mansfield State Teachers College where he graduated, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in education. He later received his Masters degree in education at Bucknell University. On Aug. 26, 1946, he married the former Marie Baumunk. Mr. Snell taught mathematics at the Canton High School for several years and also coached J.V. basketball. He later went to work for the Chrysler Corporation as a zone manager and in 1958 opened the Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge, International Dealership in Wysox, which he operated for many years. In 1975, David and his son, Greg formed Snell Auto Sales in Wysox and continued working with Greg in the automobile busiuness until his retirement in 1987. He was a former member of the Towanda Area School Board and a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 2191, Towanda. He was a member of Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 and its Last Man’s Club and Beirne-Webster VFW Post No. 1568, Towanda. David enjoyed playing golf, camping and square dancing with his wife, Marie as they were members of the Grand Paraders Square Dancing Club for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years on Nov. 1, 1999 and a sister, Gladys Scott. David also loved to drive, hunt and fish. He enjoyed Penn State football, NASCAR and shopping. Surviving are a daughter and her close friend, Robin Stevens and Ken Lippy of Aylett, VA; a son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Cheryl Snell of Towanda RR5; a daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Douglas Fay of Columbia Cross Roads, RR3; five grandchildren, Adam and Avery Snell, Arian, Kevin and David Fay; a sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Lester Hawbaker of Chambersburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Kate Snell of Towanda; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; his favorite canine companion "Hildy." The family received friends on Monday, Dec. 3 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda. Towanda Elks Lodge No. 2191 held a memorial service on Monday evening at 6:45 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Roger Griffith, pastor of the Wysox Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment followed in the Wysox Cemetery with the Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 according full military honors. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Towanda American Legion Post No. 42, 912 Main St., Towanda, PA 18848 in memory of David G. Snell.

Robert Rosencrance

Mr. Robert Rosencrance, Sr., age 82, of RR2, Box 2960, Laceyville, PA (North Flat), passed away at the Highlands in Laporte early Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001. Born in Laceyville on April 6, 1919, he was the son of the late Ira and Mattie Heberling Rosencrance. Mr. Rosencrance was a graduate of Laceyville High School, Class of 1936. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served with the 88th Infantry Division in Italy during World War II, from 1945 until 1946. He was employed for many years as a salesman for Vandervort Mills in Laceyville until its closure in the mid-1970s. He later was employed by the Laceyville Agway until his retirement in 1981. Mr. Rosencrance was a member of the Rought-Hall American Legion Post #510 of Black Walnut. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Anita Harrison; a daughter, Ellen Cornell of Laceyville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert, Jr. and Sandy Rosencrance of Woodstock, GA, Alan and Susan Rosencrance of New Market, MD and Albert and Wen Rosencrance of Great Falls, VA; four grandsons, two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Marie Foote and three brothers, Francis Rosencrance, Boyd Rosencrance and Lawrence Rosencrance. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville with Rev. Charles Bishop, of the Elk Lake Community Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Lacey St. Cemetery, Laceyville. Family and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Graveside military services will be conducted by members of the Rought-Hall Post 510, American Legion and the VFW Endless Mountains Post #3583. Anita H. Rosencrance

Mrs. Anita H. Rosencrance, age 85, of RR 2, Box 2960, Laceyville, (North Flat) passed away at Carpenter Care Center in Tunkhannock on Saturday evening, March 16, 2002. Born in West Orange, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Albert J. and Freda Wolfle Harrison. She was the wife of the late Robert Rosencrance, Sr. who passed away on Dec. 1, 2001. She was married to Mr. Rosencrance for 63 years, being married on May 14, 1938. Mrs. Rosencrance was a graduate of the West Orange High School. She was employed for many years as a cook at George’s Luncheonette in Laceyville from the mid 1950’s until the mid 1960’s. She later was employed by the Laceyville Elementary School (in the Wyalusing School District) as a cafeteria cook from the mid 1960’s until her retirement in the early 1980’s. Mrs. Rosencrance was a member of the West Orange Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a daughter, Ellen Cornell of Laceyville; three sons and their wives, Robert, Jr. and Sandy Rosencrance of Woodstock, GA, Alan and Susan Rosencrance of New Market, MD and Albert and Wen Rosencrance of Great Falls, VA; four grandsons, two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Fischer and Edna Brown, and three brothers, Melvin Harrison, Albert Harrison, Jr. and H. Alan Harrison. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 23 at 2 p.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main Street, Laceyville, with Rev. Charles Bishop, pastor of the Elk Lake Community Church, officiating. Harold W. Hower, 87, died at 6:20 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001 at Elizabeth Church Manor, Binghamton, NY. He was born in Berwick March 31, 1914, a son of the late John A. and Daisy Folk Hower. He had resided in Laceyville and prior to that in Flagler Beach, FL and Bloomsburg. He was employed by the IBM Corp. in Endicott, NY until retiring. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Pauline Reese Hower and a brother, Allen Hower. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Ted (Marion) Demaree of Quaker Lake; nieces and nephew. Private services were held with burial at Elan Memorial Park, Bloomsburg, under the direction of Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck.

Susanna "Susie" E. Burgess of Mehoopany, PA, passed away on Tuesday evening, Nov. 27, 2001 at the Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock. She was born in Mehoopany on June 10, 1917, a daughter of the late Arthur and Florence Place Henning. She was a graduate of Mehoopany High School, Class of 1935, member of the Mehoopany United Methodist Church and the Mehoopany Ladies Auxiliary of Tyler Memorial Hospital where she served as volunteer in the Kozy Corner Shack Shop. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore G. Burgess on Dec. 13, 1982 and brothers, Donald and A. Phillip Henning. Surviving are sons, Steve Burgess of Mehoopany, Jerry Burgess of Bear Creek; daughter, Donna Rettke of Mehoopany; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. from the Mehoopany United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Catherine Parsons, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will be held on Friday at the Vaughan Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Nicholas T. Carnevale

Mr. Nicholas T. Carnevale, age 75, of RR1, Box 1803, Laceyville, PA (Black Walnut) passed away on Tuesday evening, Nov. 27, 2001 at the Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton after an illness. Born in Scranton on Sept. 9, 1926, he was the son of the late Nicholas P. and Mildred Palumbo Carnevale. Mr. Carnevale was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy as a Carpenter’s Mate Third Class, from 1944 until 1946. He was employed for many years by the Pennsylvania Railroad until 1960. Nick then became a flooring installer, working for many different carpet stores in Wyoming County. In 1985 he opened Carnevale Carpet in Black Walnut, where he sold and installed carpet, along with his son, for many years until his retirement in 1993. He then sold the business in 1994 to his son and daughter-in-law, Nicholas, Jr. and Kathy Carnevale, current owners today. Nick was a member of the St. Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church in Meshoppen and a very active member of the Rought Hall Post #510 American Legion in Black Walnut. Having served on many boards and holding many offices throughout his membership, he was on the board of directors and the finance officer. He was an integral part in bringing the Black Walnut Legion to what it is today. Nick was responsible for the renovations to the legion hall and for the new bingo hall. He was a major part of organizing all of the legion events including Cow Pie Bingo, Steak Bakes and Chicken Barbecues. He also was the founder of the Black Walnut Rod and Reel Club. He enjoyed many days fishing the Susquehanna River between Laceyville and Meshoppen, with many fishing buddies. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 10:30 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with a Mass of Christian Burial at the St. Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church in Meshoppen at 11 a.m. with Father Joseph J. Manarchuck of the church, officiating. Interment will be in Lacey Street Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, Nov. 30 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., with a Vigil Service to be held at 8 p.m., Friday evening. Graveside military services will be conducted by the members of the Rought Hall Post #510 American Legion and the VFW Endless Mountains Post #3583. Stanislaw Iwanowski, age 80, of Sullivan Terrace, Dushore, PA passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001 at The Highlands in Laporte, PA. Stan was born in Poland on Feb. 14, 1921, son of the late Stanley and Paula Zalewskicz Iwanowski. He and his wife, Frances resided in New Jersey for many years where Stan worked as a pipe cutter for the Swepco Pipe Co. of Clifton, NJ. Frances predeceased him in 1993. Stan moved to Wyalusing and then to Sullivan Terrace in 1998. He was a member of St. Basil’s Catholic Church in Dushore. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John and Aniela Iwanowski, Pocono Summit; a son-in-law, Benny F. Duzak, Schenectady, NY; three grandsons; four granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Donna Duzak in 1999. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, his pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, South Hackensack, NJ. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Joyce E. (McCarthy) Sherman, 70, of Vestal, NY, went to be with the Lord on Monday morning, Nov. 19, 2001 a the home of her daughter, surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her parents, Donald and Doris McCarthy; brothers, David and James. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Ron Nemcek, Endwell, NY, Tami and Dave Brown, Johnson City, NY; a son, Larry Paradis; her guys, the light of her life, grandsons, Ryan and Brent Nemcek; granddaughters, Stacey and Melia Brown; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Jeanne and Duane Powers, Birchardville, Marion Bollinger, Tunkhannock, Peggy Watts and Patricia Wescott, both of Lawton; a special aunt, Grace Merritt; a special niece, Megan; several nieces and nephews and special friends, too numerous to mention and her faithful companion, Muffin. She was a member of St. Ambrose Church, Endicott. A retired employee of the Binghamton Psychiatric Center, Joyce will be missed for her love of cooking and always being there to lend a compassionate ear. Funeral services were held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, Inc., 300 E. Main St., Endicott, with a funeral mass at 10 a.m. at St. Ambrose Church. Entombment was in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. Genevieve (Margaret) Hitchcock

Genevieve (Margaret) Hitchcock, age 80, a resident at Bradford County Manor, passed away on Monday, Nov. 26, 2001 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. She was born on Nov. 6, 1921 in Wyalusing, a daughter of the late Hubert and Ethel Walker. Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, the late George Hitchcock. She had spent her entire lifetime in Bradford County and enjoyed time spent doing word search puzzles, playing games and shopping. Survivors include William Kissell and Brenda Ellison of Elmira, NY; a brother, Donald Walker of Towanda; three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by daughters, Jessica Lattimer and Pauline Lattimer. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. in the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing. Friends and family are invited to call on Thursday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be in Camptown Cemetery.

Thomas B. Eberlin, of Binghamton, NY, age 73, passed away on Friday, Nov. 23, 2001 at Lourdes Hospital. He was born Sept. 4, 1928 in Waverly, NY. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Lucretia and a grandson, Michael Eberlin. He was a member of the Glen Castle United Methodist Church, where he was an active member for many years. He was a faithful and loving husband, father and grandparent. He loved his church and church family. He was employed by Spaulding Bakeries for many years and retired from Bob Murphy, Inc. He loved camping, gardening and traveling with his wife. A Boy Scout leader for many years, he was a trustee of Glen Castle United Methodist Church, a member of Southern Tier Good Sam Club, United Methodist Campers and Family Motorcoach Camping Clubs. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Cleo Eberlin of Binghamton; one daughter, Gail Heath of Norfolk, VA; one son, Richard Eberlin of Sugar Run; four grandchildren, Jonah and Heather Eberlin of Laceyville, Bryan Eberlin of Sugar Run and Tina Heath of Jacksonville, NC; two great-grandchildren, Dakota Eberlin of Laceyville and Helena Heath of Jacksonville, NC; a sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Gerald Hibbard of Thousand Oaks, CA; his father-in-law, Charles VerBryck of Sugar Run; two nieces, several cousins and many friends. A graveside service will be held on Friday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. at Quicks Bend Cemetery, Sugar Run. A memorial service will be held on Dec. 8 at Glen Castle United Methodist Church, Rt. 11, Castle Creek with Rev. William Puckey, pastor, officiating. Elizabeth Schoonover Thornton

Elizabeth Schoonover Thornton, formerly of Wyalusing, PA, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001 after a brief illness at the age of 95 in Richmond, VA. She was born in Athens, PA on Sept. 3, 1906, a daughter of James Avert Schoonover and Harriet Layman Schoonover. The family later moved to Lime Hill. One brother, John H. Schoonover, preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1976; her father in 1921 and mother in 1965. Elizabeth attended Camptown High School, Columbia University and Clifton Springs Sanitarium School of Nursing where she graduated in 1928. She married Carroll F. Thornton on July 24, 1930 in Geneva, NY and resided there until 1943. She moved later that year to Long Island, NY and worked as a registered nurse for the Department of Mental Hygiene until retiring in April 1971 as a nurse supervisor after 28 years. After retirement she resided in Wyalusing until March 1991 when she moved to The Virginian Retirement Home in Richmond, VA. She was an avid horsewoman and a member of Smith Town Long Island Hunt Club for several years. Also, she was a great fan of baseball’s New York Mets and a charter member of The Lady Mets. Elizabeth was a member of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Richmond, VA. She is survived by a loving daughter-in-law, Nancy L. Thornton of Midlothian, VA (widow of eldest son, Carroll who died in 1993), twin sons, John S. Thornton of Carthage, NY, Richard J. Thornton of CA, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind several dear friends, Becky and Donnie Burgess of Wyalusing, PA, and Jerry S. Woo of Richmond, VA. A graveside service will be held at the Camptown Cemetery, Camptown, PA on Dec. 4 at 11 a.m.

Dr. Francis Homet Vaughan

Dr. Francis Homet Vaughan, 85, of Riverside, PA, died early Saturday morning Nov. 24, 2001 at the Vintage Knolls, Danville, PA where he had resided since Sept. 2001. He formerly resided at 16 West Market St., Danville. He was born July 9, 1916 in Homets Ferry, Bradford County, PA, the son of the late Frank and Geraldine Homet Vaughan. He graduated from Camptown High School and Hastings College in Nebraska. He also graduated from Temple University where he received his D.D.S. Dr. Vaughan also served two years as a Major in the United States Army Dental Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was self-employed as a dentist at 111 Mill St., Danville from 1940 until his retirement in 1984. Dr. Vaughan was a member of the Mahoning Presbyterian Church in Danville where he served as an elder. He was a member of Danville Lodge #224 F&AM for over 50 years and the Caldwell Consistory in Bloomsburg. He was a lifetime member of the Danville Elks for over 60 years. Dr. Vaughan was also a member of the Tri-County Dental Society. He was a member of the Sandy Run Hunting Camp for over 50 years, Southside Fire Company in Riverside and a member of the Montour County Historical Society. He was an original member of the Frosty Valley Country Club and served 12 years on the Danville School Board. He volunteered at the Maria Joseph Manor as an escort. He was a supporter and a descendant of French Azilum in Bradford County. Dr. Vaughan was raised on a farm and always enjoyed farming and gardening. Dr. Vaughan was married March 24, 1940 to the late Roberta Shaw Vaughan for 59 years, who died Sept. 12, 1999. Survivors include three daughters, Janice Eldridge Bye of Wenonah, NJ, Gerre E. Vecchiola of Greensburg and Roberta S. Maggs of Danville; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Magill on Feb. 2, 1999. A memorial service was held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Mahoning Presbyterian Church, East Mahoning and Ferry Streets, Danville with his pastor, the Reverend Judson S. Bennett, officiating. Burial will be private in the Homets Ferry Cemetery. Friends were received on Tuesday evening, Nov. 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. from the Miller-Visneski Funeral Home, 10 West Mahoning St., Danville. James E. Price

James E. Price, 87, of Wysox, and formerly of Newport Township, Luzerne County, PA died on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001 at Memorial Hospital, Towanda, where he had been a patient for 10 days. Born on June 9, 1914 in Sugar Notch, he was a son of the late James and Alice Hudson Price. He graduated from the former Newport Township High School in 1932. Mr. Price was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater of Operations in the 26th Infantry, First Division. He attained the rank of tech sergeant. Prior to retiring in 1984, he had been county assessor for Luzerne County for several years and formerly was the executive director of the Luzerne County Redevelopment Authority. He had also previously served as secretary-treasurer for Newport Township for over 30 years. He was a former member of Newport Township Lions Club and was instrumental in the forming of Newport Township Little League Baseball. He later became a sectional director for Little League in the state of Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Price and sisters, Thelma Gress and Gladys Pearce. Surviving are his daughters, Sarah Price and M. Carole Pfifferling; several nieces and nephews and companion and special friend, Emma Whitney of Wysox. Private graveside services were held in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Wilkes-Barre, with Andrea McDonnell, pastor of Newport United Methodist Church, Alden, officiating. There were no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Newport United Methodist Church, c/o Lonee Krietzer, 301 E. Ridge St., Nanticoke, PA 18634. Mrs. Anna E. Delovich, age 86, of Lopez, PA died on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001 at The Highlands, Laporte. Anna was born on Feb. 13, 1915 in Lopez, a daughter of the late Thomas and Efemia Demanovich Elchak. She attended schools in Lopez and later moved to New Jersey. She married the Peter Delovich of Lopez, who predeceased her on Nov. 25, 1984. She lived and worked in Bristol, CT for many years and later lived in Elmira, NY. She then returned to Lopez and worked as a sewing machine operator in Lopez at the former Weldon Mfg. Co. at Endicott-Johnson Shoe Factory in Mildred and Dushore Lingerie and Sulcraft in Dushore. She was a very loving and devoted mother and grandmother. A member of St. Vladimir’s Russian Orthodox Church in Lopez, she also was a member of I.L.G.W.U. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas P. and Elaine Delovich, Wyalusing; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Allen Williams, Lopez; one granddaughter, Jacqueline Delovich of New York City; three grandsons, Timothy Delovich, Centenary College, Hackettstown, NJ and Allen K. Williams, III and Matthew P. Williams, both of Lopez; a sister, Alice Shepard, Blue Hill, ME; brothers and sisters-in-law, Leo and Dolores Elchak, Lopez, Michael and Anne Elchak of Monroeton; a sister-in-law, Cora Elchak of Lopez. Burial services were held on Friday, Nov. 23 at 1 p.m. at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Church, Lopez with Hieromonk Michael Thier, her pastor, presiding. Interment was in St. Vladimir’s Cemetery, Lopez. Friends called on Thursday evening, Nov. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore. There was a Parastas Service on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Hattie G. (Coss) Wells

Hattie G. (Coss) Wells, of Canandaigua, NY, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 5 2002 at Ontario County Health Facility. She was formerly of Herrickville, PA. A loving sister and aunt, Hattie was 102 years old. Born in Herrickville, Aug. 3, 1899, she was a member of the Herrickville Wesleyan Church for 40 years and a member of the Crosswinds Wesleyan Church in Canandaigua for 13 years. She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Charles Combs of Rochester, NY; a sister-in-law, Edna Coss of Canandaigua, NY; 11 nieces and nephews, James and Shirley Coss of Marcy, NY, Barb Coss and Ruth and Earl Outhouse of Canandaigua, NY, Judith and Clarence Parr of Oregon, Suzanne and William Carter of Naples, NY, Edward, Paul, Westley, Marvin Pelton of Pennsylvania and Florida, Leona Beatty of Spencer, NY, Maude Coss of Wilson, CA; many great and great-great nieces and nephews and several cousins. She was predeceased by her husband of 34 years, Lee H. Wells in 1971; two brothers, James A. and Janna Coss; one sister, June Edith Pelton. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Geraldine A. VanWinkle

Geraldine A. VanWinkle, 95, formerly of Camptown, PA, died on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002 at Founders Pavilion, Corning, NY, following an extended illness. She was born Sept. 13, 1906 in Jackson Valley, PA, the daughter of the late Frank C. and Linda Mae Potts Anderson. She had attended Camptown High School. Geraldine and Clarence Floyd VanWinkle were married on Aug. 16, 1924 in Elmira. Clarence predeceased her in 1953. She was employed at the Eclipse Company in Elmira during WWII and later at the Camptown Dress Co. She retired from the Bendix Corporation of South Montrose in 1973 with 21 years of service with the company. Following her retirement, she dedicated her time to her children and grandchildren and traveling. Geraldine was a member of the Rushville Presbyterian Church and a member and past officer of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Northeast Bradford VFW Memorial Post #6824, Chapter #498 Order of the Eastern Star in LeRaysville and a member of the Ernestine Rebekah Lodge #548 in Rush. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Linda Patrick and Charles Edmister of Corning, NY; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Ellen VanWinkle of Wilton, NH; a daughter-in-law, Miriam VanWinkle of Lawton; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by son, Floyd Lyndon VanWinkle; two sisters, Anna Jones and Clara Jones and by three brothers, Leon Anderson, Jesse Anderson and her twin, Gerald Anderson. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held in Rushville at the convenience of the family. Interment will be held in the family lot in the Rushville Cemetery. Arrangements are being made by Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St., Corning, NY. The family would appreciate memorial donations be given to the Wyalusing Volunteer Ambulance Corp., Wyalusing, PA.

Francis Gerald Taylor

Francis Gerald Taylor, age 83, of Herrickville, PA, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital, Towanda. Francis was born in Herrick Township on Nov. 8, 1918, the son of the late Ralph F. and Cleo Camp Taylor. He attended local schools and was a lifelong dairy farmer in Herrickville. He married the former Dorothy Roof of Standing Stone on May 2, 1953 and they celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary last May. Francis truly loved farming and also working with tractors. He also worked for Herrick Township and at the Wyalusing Livestock Market. He was a member of the Herrickville United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Dairymen’s League and the Eastern Milk Producers Association. Surviving are his spouse, Dorothy, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Colleen Taylor, Herrickville; daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Kenneth Dauberman, Athens, Glenda Taylor, Standing Stone, Elizabeth and Phil Malt of London, England; a brother, Glenn W. Taylor, Herrickville; sister and brother-in-law, Leona and Richard Sandt, Herrickville; five grandchildren, Tammy Stedge and Kelly Dauberman, Jeff Taylor, Amy Taylor and Kim Fassett; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Stedge and Jade Lee. He was predeceased by a grandson, Timothy Lee Dauberman. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. at the Herrickville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Helen Henderson Learn, his pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Camptown Cemetery. Friends called at the church on Tuesday morning from 9:30 a.m. to the time of the service.
