CENTERVILLE - Charlotte M. Donor, 77, of 18737 Shauberger Road, Centerville, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Select Specialty Hospital, Hamot Medical Center, Erie.
She was born in Dorseyville March 12, 1924, a daughter of William W. and Anna Reedenaur Foltz. She married Merton (Ted) Donor Feb. 20, 1943, in Spartansburg.
She attended Bloomfield School.
A member of Centerville Baptist Church, she was also a member of Centerville Women's Club and Centerville Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She loved being with her family, gardening, making crafts and collecting dinner bells.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of 58 years, include three children, Frederick Donor and his wife, Sandy, and Dennis Donor and his wife, Linda, all of Centerville, and Kathy Daniel and her husband, Henry, of Byron, Ga.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Walter Foltz and his wife, Alice, and Warren Foltz and his wife, Doris, all of Centerville, and Donald Foltz and his wife, Pat, of Lincolnville; two sisters, Vivian Grable of Centerville and Mrs. Clay (Ruth) Beck of Albuquerque, N.M.; numerous nieces and nephews; a daughter-in-law; two sisters-in-law; and a brother-in-law.
She was preceded in death by a son, David Donor; two brothers, Daniel and Robert Foltz; a sister, Niomia Sexton; and a brother-in-law.

Evelyn Maust
SAEGERTOWN - Evelyn Maust, 80, of Route 198, Saegertown, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center.
Born in Salamanca, N.Y., July 6, 1920, she was a daughter of Erick and Dora Durphy Oberg. She married Richard K. Maust March 19, 1965. He preceded her in death June 3, 1995.
She retired from Singer Heatrex where she had been a bookkeeper. She previously worked as a waitress at the former Huckelbury's Cocktail Lounge and Eagles Club, was employed by the former Talon Inc. and the former Keystone Ordnance Works.
She was a Gold Star mother of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, a member of the Italian Civic Club Auxiliary and the American Association of Retired Persons.
Survivors include a daughter, Connie Garnet and her husband, Gary, of Cortland, Ohio; a son, Donald Westfall and his wife, Barbara, of Orlando, Fla.; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; two half brothers, Richard Pusbach of Meadville and Carl Pusbach of Westfield, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert L. Westfall; a granddaughter, Donna A. Westfall; and two half brothers, Robert and Walter Pusbach.

Frances M. Stright
SANDY LAKE - Frances M. Stright, 76, of 1009 Georgetown Road, Sandy Lake, New Vernon Township, died unexpectedly Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at UPMC Horizon, Greenville.
She was born in Greenville Jan. 3, 1925, a daughter of Walter and Emily Beal Hecker. She married Harry C. Stright Sept. 10, 1945, who preceded her in death Sept. 28, 1987.
A graduate of the former Penn High School in Greenville, she also graduated from the Meadville School of Nursing in 1945. She was a homemaker.
She was of the Protestant faith and enjoyed oil painting and ceramics.
Survivors include two daughters, Sue Ann Sheets and her husband, Wayne, and Barbara Zimmer and her husband, Dennis, all of Sandy Lake; three sons, William Stright and his wife, Linda, of Atlantic, Charles Stright and his wife, Loraine, of Sandy Lake, and Walter Stright and his wife, Kim, of Hadley; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Hecker.
There are no calling hours.

Barbara Ann Irwin
Barbara Ann Irwin, 54, of Meadville, and formerly of Ligonier, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at her home.
Born in Latrobe Oct. 22, 1946, she was a daughter of William Shaffer and Hermina Heimbring Irwin.
She was a 1964 graduate of Ligonier Valley High School and received her diploma in nursing from St. Francis Medical Center in Pittsburgh and her bachelor of science in nursing from Pennsylvania State University.
Employed at Meadville Medical Center as a registered nurse for the last 18 months and previously at Latrobe Area Hospital for 21 years. She was a certified diabetes educator.
She was a member of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church.
A member of the Western Pennsylvania Association of Diabetes Educators, she was serving as president and previously served as treasurer, secretary and vice president.
She also was a member of the Westmoreland County Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, having served as president and vice president. She was selected as outstanding diabetes educator by the chapter in 1993.
She enjoyed quilting and needle crafts, loved her three cats and family gatherings.
Survivors include two brothers, Robert A. Irwin and his wife, Connie, of Stahlstown, and Thomas J. Irwin and his wife, Paulette, of Latrobe; a sister, Kathleen Carns and her husband, Theodore, of Laughlintown; a niece, Andrea Irwin; and a nephew, Daniel Irwin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, James William, and an infant brother, William Stephen. .

ERIE - Dorothy L. Johnson, 78, a resident of Twinbrook Medical Center, Erie, since 1997, and formerly of Meadville, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Twinbrook.
She was born in Meadville, a daughter of John and Kathryn Winicke. She married William A. Johnson May 31, 1946 and he preceded her in death Aug. 2, 1994.
A homemaker, she was a member of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Ross and her husband, Frank, of Little Rock, Ark.; two sons, William E. Johnson and his wife, Dianna, and Ronald D. Johnson and his wife, Mary Ellen, all of Erie; six grandsons; a sister, Irene Dilly Edge of Meadville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.

COCHRANTON - Catherine (Kate) DeVore, 60, of 109 Chevy Chase, Cochranton, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center after a short illness.
She was born May 13, 1941 in Titusville, a daughter of George and Pearl Johnson Smethers. She married Allan (Max) Devore Sr. Sept. 11, 1960.
She had an interest in Native Americans, horses, model airplanes and family.
She was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Twila Wayt and her husband, Roger, of Dearborn, Mich., and Rhonda Devore of Sandy Lake; a son, Allan Max Devore Jr. and his wife, Cara, of North East; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Carol Hough and her husband, William, of Meadville, Lenora Myers and her husband, Russ, of Lake Charles, La., and Kimberly Manoski; a foster sister, Janet Marshall and her husband, Fred, of Harmonsburg; two foster brothers, James Heim and his wife, Sylvia, of Clarks Mills, and John Heim and his wife, Victoria, of Hadley; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by Pete and Grace Heim, who raised her; and a grandson, Joseph Reavis.

Roberta Sanford Kendall
HOUSTON, Texas - Roberta Sanford Kendall, 65, of Houston, Texas, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at home from cancer.
She was born in Meadville Aug. 21, 1935, a daughter of Charles L. and Emily McKinney Sanford. She married Neil A. Kendall Aug. 18, 1956 at Grace United Methodist Church, Meadville.
She graduated from Edinboro State Teachers College in 1957 with a bachelor of science in English and geography.
She was a special education teacher in Aldine, Ind., and in the Houston School District.
She attended Bering United Methodist Church of Houston where she sang in the choir and played cello in two small symphonies.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of 44 years, include her mother of Ashville, N.C.; a daughter, Kim Schroeder and her husband, Tom, of Hammond, La.; two sons, Mark and Scott Kendall, both of Houston; a grandson, Joshua Kendall; a sister, Mrs. Ted (Kathy) Kirk of Ashville; and two brothers, R.L. Sanford of Kennesaw, Ga., and Thomas Sanford of Columbia, S.C.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1995.
The memorial service was April 7 at Bering United Methodist Church, Houston.
Cremation has taken place.

Raymond C. McCall
Raymond C. McCall, 81, of 722 Williamson Road, Meadville, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Erie.
He was born in Meadville June 26, 1919, a son of Clyde and Bessie Pond McCall. He married Betty M. Fredericks July 11, 1942.
A graduate of Meadville High School, he attended Meadville Commercial College and Alliance College of Cambridge Springs.
He was an Army engineer during World War II in the 1654th Engineering Unit serving in the European Theater.
He worked at Westinghouse Electric and IBEW. He also owned and operated New Gable House for 12 years and the Track Inn for 20 years.
He was a member of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church, a 50-year life member of Meadville Elks Lodge 219, life member of Meadville Eagles Aerie 429 and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 58 years, include a son, Gary McCall and his wife, Chris, of Meadville; a daughter, Judy Patton and her husband, Mike, of Saegertown; three grandsons, Branden, Bryan and Justin McCall; three sisters, Gladys Ferlin and Genevieve (Gen) Walton, both of Meadville, and Helen Yusavage and her husband, George, of Cambridge Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Nickerson and Thelma Stallard.

Harry (Frenchy) J. Miller, 77, of 21484 Golden Drive, Meadville, died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at his residence.
He was born Jan. 26, 1924 in Soissons, France, a son of Robert J. and Suzanne Savelle Miller. He married Luann Gilbert April 11, 1993. He had been married to Mary Grace Damico from April 12, 1945 to her death Sept. 16, 1992.
He attended Anthony's Private School in France.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.
He had been employed by Local No. 348 Iron Workers Union. He had previously been employed by J.P. Barco Distributing.
He was a member of the Meadville Club, Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department and the American Legion Post No. 1 of France. He had been a member of the former Mayflower Shuffleboard Team and a former member of the Italian Civic Club.
An avid sports fan, he followed Meadville softball, Bulldog football and basketball and the Cleveland Browns.
He was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include four daughters, Marlene O'Day and her husband, John, of Linesville, Francee (Fifi) L. Miller of Meadville, Samantha N. Miller of Meadville and Kathleen (Kitty) Miller of Meadville; two sons, Robert (Square) Miller and his wife, Linda, of Meadville and Harry J. Miller Jr. of Meadville; 17 grandchildren, Susan Lewandowski, Mark S. O'Day, Amy Wetmore, Harry (Jamie) J. Miller III, Robert J. (R.J.) Miller, Sean Miller, John R. (Toby) O'Day, Casey Miller, Stephanie Hazen, Amber McGrath, Andrew Miller, Nicolas Miller, Nicole Miller, Jonathan Butterfield, Rachel Miller-D'Amico, Isaiah Manning and Abagail Miller; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Lizette Dorval of St. Luix, France; two nieces, two nephews and his beloved doggie, Nicci.

He was born Match 14, 1930 in New Castle, a son of Paul and Grace Wallace Gibson. He married Wilberta L. Amy April 10, 1952.
He was a retired Conneaut Valley High School teacher and coach. He had been previously employed at Union Area High School in New Castle and Oswayo High School in Shinglehouse.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, National Education Association, Chemistry Teachers Association, Western Crawford Masonic Lodge 304, and a member-director of Stone Memorial Library of Conneautville.
He was a veteran of the Korean War.
He was a member of Valley Church-United Methodist in Conneautville.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - John McQuiston Gizzie, 72, of 1617 Tredegar Drive, Fort Myers, Fla., died Saturday, May 26, 2001 at Health Park Medical Center, Fort Myers.
He was born Sept. 8, 1928 in Meadville, a son of John and Nellie McQuiston Gizzie. He married Louise Williams Sept. 23, 1950.
He attended Meadville public schools and graduated from Mercersburg Academy and Allegheny College's class of 1950, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
He was formerly the proprietor of the Meadville Granite Marble and Tile Co. and Gizzie Memorials and president of Great Lakes Interiors Inc.
He was a member of Meadville Masonic Lodge 408, Scottish Rite Valley of Erie, Zem Zem Temple and Fort Myers Elks Lodge 1288. He was also a former member of Essayists, the Meadville Country Club, Iroquois Boating and Fishing Club, Taylor Hose Co., Meadville Elks Lodge 219, and past president of the Meadville Volunteer Fireman's Relief Association.
Survivors include his wife of 50 year; a daughter, Susan Gizzie Santek and her husband, Charles, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sons, John W. Gizzie and his wife, Susan Marie, of Meadville and James M. Gizzie and his wife, Lisa, of Boca Raton, Fla.; five grandchildren; a sister, Margaret (Peg) Gizzie of Meadville; and a brother, Robert W. Gizzie of Harvester, Mo.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William B. Gizzie.

Dorothy M. Emig, 77, of Tamarack Drive, Meadville, died Friday, May 25, 2001 at Rolling Fields, Conneautville.
She was born June 21, 1923 in Meadville, a daughter of Ralph E. and Edith Francine Amsbaugh Phelps. She married Walter R. Emig Aug. 30, 1941. He preceded her in death July 20, 1979.
She was employed at Hubbard Bus Service and Crawford Central School District as a school bus driver for 25 years. Her citizens band radio handle was "Red Top."
She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardens, watching birds and caring for her grandchildren.
Survivors include five daughters, Suzanne L. Sherrod of Meadville, Carol E. Easton and her husband, Michael, of Meadville, Bonnie L. Laurie and her husband, Andrew, of Maryland, Sally J. Dockers and her husband, Frank, of Michigan, and Mary E. Emig of Meadville; two sons, Gordon W. Emig and his wife, Judith, of Carlton, and Jack W. Emig of Ohio; 10 grandchildren, James Emig, Nancy Ferringer, Dorine Wagner, Judy Marie Hall, Jill Sherrod, Michelle Sherrod, Robert Cooper, Gary Powell Jr., Gabriel Glass and Emily Cancilla; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Imogene M. Taylor of Meadville; a brother, John Gordon Phelps and his wife, Marion, of Meadville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant child and a sister, Gladys Curran.

He was a son of Orel and Eva Wrigley Shugarts.
He was married to Kathleen McClintock Shugerts for 46 years.
Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Elizabeth Shugerts Leone and her husband, Chris, of Erie; three sons, Michael F. Shugerts of Erie, James K. Shugerts and his wife, Deborah, of Plant City, Fla., and Patrick S. Shugerts and his wife, Tracy, of Saegertown; eight grandchildren, Samantha and Anthony Leone and Kevin, Ryan, Patrick, Kyle, Korey and Kenny Shugerts; three sisters, Mary Swatsworth of Rockton, Blanche Barr of Massachusetts and Lillian Beveridge of Allport; two brothers, Ralph Shugarts of California and Karl Demi of Florida.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Florence Rodgers, Rebecca Milewski and infant Isabelle Shugarts; and three brothers, Lloyd Shugarts, James Shugarts and Howard Demi.

Alice Weidaw Shilling
CONNEAUTVILLE - Alice Weidaw Shilling, 93, formerly of Circle East, Meadville, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Rolling Fields, Conneautville.
Born in Phillipsburg, N.J., April 28, 1908, she was a daughter of John and Elizabeth Eick Young. She was first married to James Brittain, she subsequently married Fred Weidaw and later married Thurman Shilling, all of whom preceded her in death.
She was a homemaker, mother of 10 children, teacher and nurse's aide, having first worked for Macy's Department Store of Phillipsburg and later as a nursery school teacher in Washington, D.C. She then worked in the pediatrics unit of the former Spencer Hospital, Meadville, as a nurse's aide.
A 50-year member of First Presbyterian Church, she was a former deacon and taught the kindergarten class for 25 years. She was also a member of the Presbyterian Women, Joy Circle and Tuesday morning Bible study at the church.
She received the Ace for Brace Award from the Crippled Children's Association and was a volunteer with the American Red Cross for 49 years.
Survivors include two sons, James Brittain of Etowha, Tenn., and John Brittain of Pittsburgh; two daughters, Joanne Crawford of Flemington, N.J., and Joy Link of Meadville; two stepdaughters, Grace Eno of Honesdale and Joan Peery of Fresno, Calif.; 26 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a daughter-in-law, Evelyn Weidaw of Meadville.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by three daughters, Ruth Lorenzo, Betty Clark and Camilla Harrison; a son, Clarence Weidaw; a sister, Margaret Young; and five brothers, John, Mitchell, Albert, Joseph and Paul Young.
Private burial is today in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Zimmerman.

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS - Harvey Lester Stoke, 83, of 25830 Mt. Pleasant Road, Cambridge Springs, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at Edinboro Manor.
He was born in Titusville Feb. 23, 1918, a son of Charles and Lucy Morris Stoke. He married Shirley Gertrude Glidewell Trask.
A 1937 graduate of Titusville School, he was employed at General Electric in Erie as a machine operator for 15 years. He was also employed as deputy warden at Erie County Prison for 18 years and at Pleasant Ridge Manor until he retired in 1978.
He was a member of Perry Lodge Free and Accepted Masons, a lifetime member of Kismet Grotto, Union City Moose and the Elks of Titusville.
His hobbies were woodworking and gardening.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 40 years, include a stepson, Milton R. Trask and his wife, Judy, of State College; three step-grandchildren, Kristen Knapp, and Jason and Michael Trask; a step-great-grandson; two sisters-in-law; two good friends; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ted, Clyde, Lawrence and Claire Stoke; and three sisters, Mary Culver, Elsie Tulloch and Merna Manross.

Margaret B. Fordyce, 90, of 736 Davenport St., Meadville, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was born in Howland Corners, Ohio, Aug. 9, 1910, a daughter of David S. and Margaret Anderson Fordyce.
A 1928 graduate of Meadville High School, she was also a 1930 graduate of Meadville Commercial College, earning a degree in bookkeeping. She worked as a bookkeeper at the former Keystone View Company for 43 years, retiring in 1973.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, its Joy Circle and a former Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of Golden Crown Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and American Association of Retired Persons.
Survivors include a sister, Ida Bean and her husband, Dr. Carl Bean, of Butler; a niece and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Leon (Jessie) Bausman, Betty Fordyce and Helen Fordyce; and a brother, Alec Fordyce.

Marion Marsh, 89, of Cordia Commons, Meadville, died there Thursday, May 24, 2001.
She was born Oct. 25, 1911, in Joliet, Ill.
A high school graduate of the Detroit school system, she worked as a secretary.
She attended Faith United Methodist Church of Geneva.
When she was younger and healthier, she enjoyed ceramics, and always loved being with her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Jo Welsh and her husband, Jack, of Conneaut Lake; four grandsons, Wayne, James, Tom and Daniel Welsh; two granddaughters, Madonna Hunt and Jacqi Jockel; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bill Wilson of Plymouth, Mich.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Charles Andrew Welsh, in 1977; and a brother, Culver Wilson.

CONNEAUTVILLE - Alice Weidaw Shilling, 93, formerly of Circle East, Meadville, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Rolling Fields, Conneautville.
Born in Phillipsburg, N.J., April 8, 1908, she was a daughter of John and Elizabeth Eick Young. She was first married to James Brittain, she subsequently married Fred Weidaw and later married Thurman Shilling, all of whom preceded her in death.
She was a homemaker, mother of 10 children, teacher and nurse's aide, having first worked for Macy's Department Store of Phillipsburg and later as a nursery school teacher in Washington, D.C. She then worked in the pediatrics unit of the former Spencer Hospital, Meadville, as a nurse's aide.
A 50-year member of First Presbyterian Church, she was a former deacon and taught the kindergarten class for 25 years.
She received the Ace for Brace Award from the Crippled Children's Association and was a volunteer with the American Red Cross for 49 years.
Survivors include two sons, James Brittain of Etowha, Tenn., and John Brittain of Pittsburgh; two daughters, Joanne Crawford of Flemington, N.J., and Joy Link of Meadville; two stepdaughters, Grace Eno of Honesdale and Joan Peery of Fresno, Calif.; 26 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a daughter-in-law, Evelyn Weidaw of Meadville.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by three daughters, Ruth Lorenzo, Betty Clark and Camilla Harrison; a son, Clarence Weidaw; a sister, Margaret Young; and five brothers, John, Mitchell, Albert, Joseph and Paul Young.
Private burial is today in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

She was born in Greenville, Tenn., July 20, 1917, a daughter of Joseph and Gertrude Wilson Laughters. She married William Gibson Oct. 31, 1936, and he preceded her in death Oct. 1, 1989.
She worked as an administrative assistant at Hillside Home for 31 years, retiring in 1981.
She was a member of Meadville Alliance Church and enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her family.
Survivors include a son, Allen L. Gibson, and his wife, Betty, of Meadville; a daughter, Patsy Yarnell, and her husband, Raymond, of Meadville; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Josephine Bradley, Louise Willett and Lavada Casteel, all of Greenville, Tenn.; a son-in-law, Gary McNulty of Conneaut Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

SANDY LAKE - Glenn C. Andrews, 92, of 193 Lake Road, Sandy Lake, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at UPMC Horizon, Greenville.
He was born at RD 1, Jackson Center Dec. 27, 1908, a son of Charles and Anna Campbell Andrews. He married Helen Miller July 6, 1929.
A graduate of Sandy Lake High School, he farmed, worked at Valley Mills, Sandy Lake, and also for the Farm Bureau at Hadley. He retired as an attendant at Polk State Hospital.
He was a member of Sandy Lake Wesleyan Church where he taught Sunday school and was a lay minister for many years.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 71 years, include three sons, Eugene Andrews of Polk, Norman Andrews of Hadley and Larry Andrews of Utica; four daughters, Pauline Harnett and her husband, Edward, of Hadley, Anna Lou Olson and her husband, Audley, of Stoneboro, and Linda Mouck and her husband, Donivan, and Judy Robertson and her husband, James, all of Sandy Lake; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Willis and John Andrews; a granddaughter, Robin Bryer; and five sisters, Della Anderson, Iva Mook, Pearl Arnold, Lois Kaltenbaugh and Florence Oldham.

LINESVILLE - Homer John Dunlap, 93, of 14094 Madigan Road, Pine Township, Linesville, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at Rolling Fields, Conneautville, after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Forward Township, Butler, March 26, 1908, a son of Charles and Susanna Kiser Dunlap. He married Elizabeth A. Shellito June 19, 1944.
He lived in Linesville for 57 years and retired from R.D. Werner of Greenville after 20 years as a machinist. He previously worked at Talon Inc. of Meadville for 15 years.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He was a past member of Crawford and Erie County State Police, and Fire Police of Linesville.
After retirement he serviced washers, dryers and sewing machines. An avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed golfing.

Norman D. King
CONNEAUT LAKE - Norman D. King, 63, of 10608 Mohawk Road, Conneaut Lake, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center of an apparent heart attack.
He was born Feb. 3, 1938, a son of Lester and Lula Sidley King.
A 1956 graduate of Mercer High School, he also attended Allegheny College where he was active in the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and later served as chapter adviser.
President of Greenville Savings Bank since 1992, he started with the bank in 1979 as managing officer and was elected to the board of directors in 1980. He was previously employed at Venango Federal Bank, hired in 1967 as a loan officer, and transferred to Meadville as the branch manager in 1970. In 1977 he was promoted to vice president, branch coordinator and was employed there until 1979.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Board of Accountancy and a past director of the Pennsylvania Association of Community Bankers. He was also past director of Western Pennsylvania League of Financial Institutions. He was an instructor for Penn State Erie-The Behrend continuing education in Meadville and Warren for many years.
Active in the Greenville Community, he was a member of the Downtown Redevelopment Committee, the Business and Industrial Day Committee, the Recreation Complex Committee, and served on the Northern Mercer County Community Foundation. He was a past member of Greenville Borough Council serving from 1982 to 1984. He was also a former member of the Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors; the Executive Committee of Greenville Area Economic Development Corp., Greenville Area Recreation board of directors and a former member of the Greenville Incubator board of directors.
He was active in other community organizations, as a member of the Greenville Country Club; Elks Lodge 219 of Meadville; Little Gridders of Meadville; the Sertoma Club of Meadville; and the Iroquois Boating and Fishing Club of Conneaut Lake.
An avid fan of all sports, he served on the Mercer County Hall of Fame board of directors.
Survivors include his second wife, Helene Ucchino King of Conneaut Lake, and children, Lindsay Yoder of Mt. Laurel, N.J., and Jason Yoder of Conneaut Lake; a son, Steven K. King and his wife, Kimberley, of Greensboro, N.C.; three grandchildren, Stephanie, David and Maggie King; his first wife, Neva Gatrell Eckley of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Pauline Marsh and Nancy Flannery, both of Mercer; and three brothers, John King of Wilmington, Del., Russ King of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Wayne King of Mercer.

In his early years he was a dairy farmer and later worked at Erie-Lackawanna Railroad. He was last employed at Langdon and Leveto Veterinary Clinic of Meadville.
He was of the Presbyterian faith.

He retired from Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Born in Linesville March 17, 1902, she was a daughter of George Edwin and Mertie Clark Thompson. She married Anthony Vacanti. He preceded her in death in February 1924. She later married Williston W. Earle, who preceded her in death in 1997.
She was a housewife most of her life and lived in New Jersey from 1935 until 1974 when she moved to Linesville.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Meadville, and enjoyed crocheting and baking.
Survivors include a daughter, Mertie Kibler of Edinboro; a grandson, Anthony Williams; two granddaughters, Beverly Lupo and Dolores Iannello; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A member of St. Hippolyte Roman Catholic Church, he was a charter member of East Mead Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

SPERRYVILLE, Va. - Kathryn Aber Wayland, 89, of Sperryville, Va., died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Culpeper Health Care Center, Culpeper, Va.
She was born in Pennsylvania Sept. 24, 1911, a daughter of Dr. David L. and Katherine Marguerite Dreutlein Aber. She married John Hamilton Wayland, who preceded her in death.
She was a homemaker and a member of Reynolds Memorial Church in Sperryville.
Her grandparents were the late Henry and Caroline Worst Dreutlein of Meadville and Conneaut Lake, and her great-grandfather, Charles Worst, helped establish St. Joseph's Convent, later known as Spencer Hospital.
Survivors include three children, Jacquelyn A. Fox, F. Marguerite Tupper and William Tamplin Wayland, all of Rappahannock County, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, John David Wayland.

William Edward DeRemer
CONNEAUTVILLE - William Edward DeRemer, 73, of 13319 State Highway 198, Conneautville, died Friday, May 18, 2001 at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community following a two-year illness.
Born Nov. 7, 1927 in Guys Mills, he was a son of Jacob Lawrence and Margaret B. Thornton DeRemer. He married Lillian Bigusiak Oct. 13, 1951. She preceded him in death Oct. 30, 1998.
A 1953 graduate of Glendale Evening High School, Glendale Ca., he was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving in the European Theater of operations and attaining the rank of corporal.
He began building airplanes at Lockheed Corp., Glendale, Ca., in 1953, and once built a plane for President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Upon returning to western Pennsylvania, he worked for 20 years at True Temper of Union City as a log yard foreman and timber buyer.
He subsequently worked as plant manager for the Snyder Chair Co. of Conneautville, and started DeRemer Sales and Service where he sold and serviced lawn equipment, snow mobiles, skidder parts and truck equipment for 25 years until his retirement in 2000.
From 1971 to 1992, he worked as a bridge and building plumber foreman for the Erie-Lackawanna and Conrail railroads. He was also a notary public, certified welder and heavy equipment operator.
He was the local chairman and secretary treasurer of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Lodge 1904, Meadville, and member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Warehousemen and Helpers of America Lodge 564, Conneautville.
He was also a member of Cambridge Springs American Legion Post 381, Conneautville American Legion Post 615, Venango Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 196, Venango Volunteer Fire Department, Springboro Fire Hall, Conneaut Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Station 3, Conneaut Lake Park Volunteer Fire Department, Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Meadville Club, Norrisville Sportsman's Club, the Pioneer Steam and Gas Engine Society of Northwestern Pennsylvania, and the National Rifle Association.
He was a former member of the Meadville Elks Lodge 219 and Meadville Masonic Lodge 408.
Family members say he was a man of varied interests and hobbies. He loved working with machinery and anything involving nuts and bolts, and enjoyed camping, especially at a camp he owned in Tionesta. He also enjoyed hunting, reading, playing cards, traveling, pets and animals, trains and attending auctions and the annual woodsmen carnival in Coudersport. Friends say was a family man who took pride in his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter, Darcel L. (Darcee) Deeter and her husband, William, of Meadville; two sons, Marshall (Scott) DeRemer and his wife, Kathy, of Conneautville, and William A. DeRemer and his wife, Diane, of Meadville; three grandchildren, Cherié, Megan and Jackie DeRemer; four step-grandchildren, Tim, Brian and Michael Hannigan and Justin Deeter; a foreign exchange student granddaughter, Melanie Milanowski of Hamburg, Germany; two sisters, Betty Cornett and her husband, James, of Greenville, and Peggy Marron and her husband, John, of Mercer; an aunt, Anastasia Byham of Meadville, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife of 47 years, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jacob Lawrence (Bangs) DeRemer Jr. and a sister, Sandra Mattis.
Calling hours will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., with an American Legion service at 7 p.m.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Chistopher Fujii, pastor of Fifth Street Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery.

Pauline B. Zeilinski Polach
UNION CITY - Pauline B. Zeilinski Polach, 93, of 19 Brown St., Union City, died Friday May 18, 2001, at Union City Memorial Hospital.
Born in Pittsburgh Feb. 8, 1908, she was a daughter of Stanley P. and Eleanora S. Ruchanski Zeilinski. She married George Polach July 1, 1929. He died in 1967.
In her younger years, she worked at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Marx Toys and the Eastman Company.
She was a long-time member of St. Teresa's Roman Catholic Church in Union City.
Survivors include four sons, Joseph S. Polach and his wife, Jean, and R. Walter Polach and his wife, Joyce Ann, of Union City, Casimir C. Polach and his wife, Paula, of Saegertown, and Stanley P. Polach and his wife, Charlotte, of Corry; three daughters, Eleanor P. Soety and her husband, Donald, and Theresa L. Racop and her husband, Max, of Union City, and Dorothy P. Wallis and her husband, Allen, of Townville; one sister, Mary Spencer of Union City; one step-son, Frank Polach Sr. of Union City; three step-daughters, Rose Thomas of Union City, Helen Black of Erie and Marian Wickwire or Georgia; 22 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband of 38 years, she was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.

Bethel (Betty) Saulsbery
CONNEAUT LAKE - Bethel (Betty) Saulsbery, 81, of 975 State St., Conneaut Lake, and a resident of Beverly Health Care System in Meadville, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at the home.
Born in Oil City July 1, 1919, she was a daughter of Andrew Diven and Jennie Bell Stanley Bickel. She married Warren Harding Saulsbery Oct. 31, 1942. He died July 15, 1966.
She retired in 1979 from Talon Inc., where she worked in the finishing department. A member of the High Street Community Church of Conneaut Lake, she was active in the church's quilting club and enjoyed drag racing.
Survivors include a daughter, Grayce Calvin and her husband, Joe, of Atlantic; four sons, Paul Saulsbery and his wife, B.J. , of Hartstown, and Warren (Gene) Saulsbery, Robert Saulsbery and his wife, Sherri, and Gary Saulsbery and his wife, Robin, all of Conneaut Lake; 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband of 24 years, she was preceded in death by four sisters; Mildred Stephens, Bernice Bickel, Grace Moorhouse and Lauada Funk, and four brothers; Rodney Bickel, Ralph Bickel, Oscar Bickel and Alva Bickel.

Arthur A. Hughes
Arthur A. Hughes, 83, of Ravine Street, Meadville, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at his residence.
Born in White Mill June 17, 1917, he was a son of Albert and Annie Bennett Hughes. He married Jean L. Anderson Feb. 2, 1946.
A U.S. Army veteran serving as a combat medic in the 3rd Armor Division from February 1942 to September 1945, he received the Bronze Star for heroism in Germany.
He worked at the former Vic Farrah Chevrolet of Meadville.
He was of the Methodist faith. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and a charter member of the American Legion.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 55 years, include two sons, Randy Hughes and his wife, Sharon, of Ponce Inlet, Fla., and Terry Hughes and his wife, Erin, of Lake City; three grandchildren, David Hughes, Kelly Hughes and Patrick Hughes; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jolene Spicher of Ebensburg.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Orville, David and Don Hughes; and a sister, Hulda Darr.
Calling hours will be Monday from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2 p.m. at Hatheway-Tedesco Funeral Home, 614 Baldwin St., Meadville.

Irene M. Biby
MESA, Ariz. - Irene M. Biby, 74, of Mesa, Ariz., and formerly of Cambridge Springs, died Saturday, May 12, 2001.
She was born in Lorain, Ohio, Aug. 27, 1926, a daughter of Cecil and Edna Long Alward. She married Roy B. Biby in 1947.
She was raised in Edinboro and lived in Cambridge Springs with her husband until they moved to Arizona in 1974.
She was a devoted wife and a domestic engineer, raising five children.
Survivors, in addition to her loving husband of 54 years, include four daughters, Barbara Antonucci of Virginia, Cathy Anzevino of Pennsylvania, Nancy Taylor of Mesa and Sharon Wilton of Australia; a son, Donald Biby of Indiana; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five sisters, Shirley Lewis, Beatrice Cole, Lois Richardson, Marjorie Tau and Carol Perlman; and three brothers, John, James and Charles Alward.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas, Marvin and Russell Alward.

The funeral was Thursday at Mariposa Gardens Chapel, 6747 E. Broadway Road, Mesa, with a graveside service in National Memorial Cemetery, Phoenix, Ariz.

Virgie M. Ray
FRANKLIN - Virgie M. Ray, 109, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at The Caring Place, Franklin, where she had been a resident.
Born in Rockland Township, Venango County, Oct. 21, 1891, she was a daughter of John and Leah Lesser Manson. She married George Walter Ray Aug. 26, 1916. He preceded her in death May 18, 1965.
She worked as a cook at the former Isaly's on the south side of Oil City.
She and her husband lived in the old "Coal Oil Johnny House" at Rynd Farm where her husband worked on the oil lease.
She was a lifelong member of Rouseville United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Ray and his wife, Mae, of Leesburg, Fla., and George Ray and his wife, Lou, of Meadville; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Gerald and Cecil Ray; four brothers, Joe, Clate, Roy and Herbert Manson; and five sisters, Amy Hitchcock, Ruth Baker, Nell Manson, Temoy Smith and Lettie Wilkins.

Bernice M. Colwell
STONEBORO - Bernice M. Colwell, 85, of 11 Fairground Road, Stoneboro, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after an extended illness.
Born in Deckards, Jan. 29, 1916, she was a daughter of Elmer and Katherine (Kate) Barnhart Reisinger. She married Wayne W. Colwell in March 1938 and he preceded her in death Sept. 16, 1980.
A 1934 graduate of Cochranton High School, she attended beautician school after graduation. She retired from Polk State School and Hospital (now Polk Center). Also with her husband she owned and operated a dairy farm in Sandy Lake Township for many years.
She was a member of Lakeview United Methodist Church and Princess Rebekah Lodge 442 of Sandy Lake. She was a former manager of and was very dedicated to the Lakeview Area Meals on Wheels.
She loved animals, especially her cat, Lucky.
She and her husband helped to raise three foster children.
Survivors include three sisters, Hazel Beuchat and her husband, Carl L., of Cochranton, Irene Coon of Meadville and Mary Ellen Curtis of Westlake, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Reisinger and Russell Reisinger; and two sisters, Grace Coon and an infant sister, Geraldine.

Alexander J. (Alex) Kovac
HASLETT, Mich. - Alexander J. (Alex) Kovac, 85, died Friday, May 11, 2001, in Haslett after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Duquesne March 3, 1916, and grew up on Round Top.
He worked at the American Viscose as a pipefitter in the early 1940s, and volunteered for Meadville Fire Department's Rescue Squad, a service which he was very proud of.
In 1955 he and his family moved to Haslett where he joined the Asbestos Workers Union Local 47. He worked many years as a foreman, installing asbestos in commercial buildings.
He enjoyed feeding the birds at their home and was very talented at growing flowers, shrubs and vegetable gardens. He was very proud of his children and all of their accomplishments.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Evelyn; five children, Shirley Rosier and her husband, Bob, Linda Moran and her husband, Tim, David Kovac, Russell Kovac and his wife, Sharon, and Raymond Kovac and his wife, Ruth; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Florence Brace and her husband, Don; two brothers, Alfred Kovac, and Donald Kovac and his wife, Genevieve; a special sister-in-law; and a good friend.
Calling hours took place. Services were at Palmer-Bush Lansing Chapel, with Pastor Raymond Rohlfs of St. Luke Lutheran Church officiating. Burial was in Eastlawn Memory Gardens.

COCHRANTON - George W. Burgess Sr., 65, of 16837 Mattocks Road, Cochranton, Greenwood Township, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center following a short illness.
He was born in Greenwood Township Dec. 7, 1935, a son of Mearl A. and Ann Neff Burgess. He married Mary Ann Bitnec Oct. 17, 1953.
A licensed auctioneer, he had owned and operated Swamp Acres Auction in Greenwood Township. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 47 years, include six daughters, Debra Ann Johnson and her husband, Kelly, Ardella Chess and her husband, Daryl, and Jeannette Barquist and her husband, Walter, all of Hadley, Caroline DeMoss and her husband, Mike, of Southington, Ohio, Stephanie English and her husband, Jerry, of Clearfield, and Nadene Burgess and her companion, Thomas Godwin, of Hadley; two sons, George W. Burgess Jr. of Hadley and Guy Burgess of Cochranton; 17 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two sisters, Twila Patterson and Betty Davison, both of Hadley; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Chess.

Richard P. Cappellino
Richard P. Cappellino, 80, of 217 Poplar St., Meadville, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center.
Born in Meadville Sept. 8, 1920, he was a son of Peter and Dorothea Acardi Cappellino. He married Catherine Zuccaro Saturday, June 11, 1949.
He attended Meadville schools and was a veteran of World War II stationed with the U.S. Army at Ft. Story, Va., with the 1327 service unit. He had been employed by Abex Corp. for 45 years starting Oct. 16, 1941 and retiring Dec. 1, 1986 as an electrical furnace operator.
An active member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, he served as a trustee of the Holy Name Society for several years and sold numerous tickets for the annual St. Mary's Church Bazaar and Holy Name Breakfast. He also was a life member of the Italian Civic Club.
He was a caring and loving husband, father and grandfather who loved working in his garden and listening to Italian music.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 51 years at home, include two sons, Rick P. Cappellino and his wife, Rose, of Austintown, Ohio, and Steve Cappellino and his wife, Michelle, of Meadville; a daughter, Kathy Jones and her husband, Harry, of Suwanee, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Rich and Kristen Cappellino, Danielle, Nicole and Tony Cappellino, Meaghan and Ryan Mullen, and Michael and Kevin Jones; two sisters, Uda Varricchio of Wickliffe, Ohio, and Theresa Sekel and her husband, Dave, of Meadville; three brothers, Sam Cappellino of Newton Falls, Ohio, Nick Cappellino and his wife, Rose, of Meadville, and James Cappellino and his wife, Madeline, of Crafton; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.

Joan Palmero Mitchell
Joan Palmero Mitchell, 79, of 31 Park Ave., formerly of 307 Randolph St., Meadville, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community.
Born in Meadville July 9, 1921, she was a daughter of Joseph and Felicia Rich Palmero. She married Paul Mitchell in November 1967 and he preceded her in death in October 1972.
She attended St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church.
She attended Meadville schools.
She retired from the former Avtex Fiber Corp. in 1985 from the processing department where she had been employed since 1941.
A loving aunt, she enjoyed watching soap operas and cooking.
Survivors include two sisters, Jane Quindardo of Meadville and Mary Grace Miller of Gastonia, N.C.; two nieces, Patty Bossard and Toni Barrett; and other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Sam, Anthony and Carmen Palmero; and two sisters, Elizabeth Consiglio and Rose Kuban.

Timothy B. Forcier
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Timothy B. Forcier, 44, of Charlotte, N.C., died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital.
He was born at Fall River, Mass., Feb. 11, 1957, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Forcier. He married Sally Tartaglione.
He was a firefighter and emergency medical technician with the Charlotte Fire Department as well as an instructor at the Charlotte Fire Academy and Central Piedmont Community College.
He was active in bone marrow recruitment with the American Red Cross and attended Cornerstone Baptist Church in Charlotte.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his parents of Pittsburgh; a son, Erik R. Minman of Charlotte; a daughter, Amanda S. Forcier of Charlotte; a brother, Kevin Forcier and his wife, Teresa, of Cambridge Springs; three sisters, Eileen Forcier McLaughlin and Nanette Forcier, both of Philadelphia, and Roseanne Forcier of Sharon; several nieces and nephews; and his wife's parents.
The funeral is today at 11 a.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 8947 Albemarle Road, Charlotte, with the Rev. Jerry Woolery officiating. Calling hours were Tuesday.
