DALMATIA - Whalen R. Witmer, 76, of Dalmatia RD1, died Monday, Nov. 22 at Susquehanna Lutheran Village in Millersburg. Born Nov. 27, 1927 in Dalmatia RD, he was the son of the late Nevin and Anna Bordner Witmer, and was a 1945 graduate of the Lykens Valley Vocational School. He was a retired administration officer at the Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission in Harrisburg, and a member of Gratz Veterans of Foreign Wars; Mandata American Legion and Lower Mahanoy Area Fire Company. Surviving are a companion, Percita Wertz of Dalmatia RD; two sons, Terry L. and Reynold E., both of Halifax; two daughters, Susan and Linda; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Ernest; and a sister, Leah Brosius. Funeral services were held Nov. 26 from James A. Reed Funeral Home in Pillow. Helen E. Harner
ASHLAND - Helen Eleanor Harner, 80, of 889 Deep Creek Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 23 at Tremont Health and Rehabilitation Center in Tremont. Born July 22, 1924 in Hubley Twp., she was the daughter of the late John Warren and Catherine Beaver Stine, and was a 1941 graduate of the former Hubley Twp. High School in Spring Glen. She was a retired seamstress from the former Hegins Corp. in Hegins, and a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Weishample, and the Weishample Grange. She was the widow of Paul H. Harner, and also was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Mayer; and a brother, Charles Stine. Surviving are two daughters, Virginia M. Wolfgang of Dover, Del. and Linda C. Maurer of Hegins; a son, Dennis L. Harner of Seltzer; a sister, Mary Romberger of Klingerstown; a brother, Howard Stine of Penbrook; seven grandchildren; and 11 great- grandchildren. Memorial services were held Nov. 27 from her church. Burial was in Salem Cemetery in Weishample. Mabel E. Schlegel
SUNBURY - Mabel E. Schlegel, 98, of 800 Court St., died Tuesday, Nov. 23 at Manor Care Home in Sunbury. Born Jan. 20, 1906 in Herndon RD., She was the daughter of the late Adam and Sallie Rumfelt Hollenbach. Surviving are a daughter, Marian C. Schlegel of Selinsgrove. Services were held at the convenience of the family. James A. Reed Funeral Home in Pillow was in charge of arrangements.

John B. Drass
HALIFAX - John B. Drass, 74, of 1788 Armstrong Valley Road, died Saturday, Nov. 27 at his residence. Born in Frankstown, he was the son of the late John R. Drass and Lillian Drass of Altoona who survives him. He retired in 1968 from the U.S. Air Force, having served as a sergeant for 21 years; and also serving as a firefighter in the Air Force. He also retired from local laborer's union No. 1180. He was a member of the Halifax and Steelton VFWs. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 40 years, Betty Morrow Drass; three sons, Robert Donovan and Charles Donovan, both of Halifax, and Alford Donovan of Lykens; a daughter, Rebecca Donovan of Landisburg; three brothers, Michael of Canoe Creek and Richard and Charles, both of Altoona; two sisters, Josephine Poplin of Tampa, Fla. and Eileen Hmel of Altoona; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, William and Daniel; and a sister, Marian. Services will be held Thursday Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. from Hoover Funeral Home in Millersburg. Burial with military honors will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Harrisburg. Viewing will be Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m.; and Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Dale R. Mattern
MILLERSBURG - Dale R. Mattern, 65, of 663 Union St., died Friday, Nov. 19 at Harrisburg Hospital. Born in Hebe, he was the son of the late Leon Mattern and Margaret Troutman Mattern of Millersburg, who survives him. He was a retired carpenter from the Mechanicsburg Naval Depot, and was a U.S. Army veteran. He attended Trinity United Church of Christ in Millersburg. Surviving, in addition to his mother, is a son, Ronald of Gratz; two sisters, Dorene Hawley of Millersburg and Romayne Erdman of Elizabethville; and two granddaughters. Private funeral services will held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to: Lebanon VA Medical Center, Lebanon 17042. Anna M. Herb
KLINGERSTOWN - Anna M. Herb, 74, of Klingerstown, died Thursday, Nov. 25 at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Pottsville. Born May 23, 1930 in Ashland, she was the daughter of the late George E. and Anna M. Maurer Kessler, and was a 1948 graduate of the former Ashland High School. She was a retired factory worker and a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Congregational Church; and Woodmen of the World Lodge Camp No. 433, both in Pitman. She was the widow of Lloyd F. Herb, and also was preceded in death by two brothers, George E. Kessler Jr. and Robert Kessler. Surviving are a son, David L. Herb of Klingerstown; and a sister, Elizabeth DePersia of Carneys Point, N.J. Funeral services were held Nov. 29 from her church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home in Klingerstown was in charge of arrangements.

Catherine E. Davis
WILLIAMSTOWN - Catherine E. "Kate" Davis, 62, of 104 E. Market Street, died Saturday, Nov. 27 in Williamstown. Born April 13, 1942 in Wiconisco, she was the daughter of the late Clair and Catherine Pinkerton Hoover. She was last employed in the cafeteria of the Williams Valley Elementary School. She was of the Protestant faith. Surviving are a daughter, Shari E. Bettinger of Williamstown; four sons, Kery J. and Chad E. Gonder, both of Williamstown, Mark J. Gonder of Tower City and Brad E. Gonder of Halifax; three sisters, Carol Kehler of Pillow, Brenda Shoop of Millersburg and Winnie Neidig of Tremont; four brothers, Tom and Rich Hoover of Williamstown; Ed Hoover of Millersburg and Sonny Hoover of Harrisburg; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grand- son. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie Gilligbauer. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. from the chapel of Dimon Funeral Home in Tower City. Burial will be private at the Calvary Cemetery, Wiconisco. Viewing will be from 9 to 10 a.m. at the chapel, prior to services.

Franklin L. Stence
MILLERSBURG - Franklin L. Stence, 90, of Spring Creek Nursing Home, formerly of Millersburg, died Nov. 24, 2004 at the nursing home. Born in Millersburg, he was the son of the late Fred and Emma Auker Stence. Surviving are a daughter, Carmen Jarvis of Port Angeles, Wash. Warren G. Deibler
MILLERSBURG - Warren G. Deibler, 78, of 214 Hup Road, died Saturday Nov. 27 at his residence. Born in Mifflin Twp., he was the son of the late Claude and Meta Radle Deibler. He was retired from Kimbob Construction Co. and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Millersburg Legion No. 326. Surviving are his wife, Verna McBride Deibler of Millersburg; a son, Christopher of York; a brother, Marlin of Harrisburg; three sisters, Marlene Filarsky of California, Renee Kadenko of Etters and Marie Wilbert of Halifax; and a granddaughter. Services will be held Wednesday Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. from Hoover Funeral Home in Millersburg. Burial with military honors will be in St. John's Cemetery in Berrysburg. ELIZABETHVILLE - Norman Jay Hain, 81, of 47 Clearfield Street, died Wednesday, Nov. 24 at Susquehanna Lutheran Village in Millersburg. Born April 4, 1923 in Elizabethville, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Sadie Maurer Hain. He was a retired tile and carpet installer from the former Grimm Tile and Floor Company in York. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Elizabethville; The Carpenter's Union; and Reliance Hose Co. No. 1 in Elizabethville; and was a life member of Dauphin County Fireman's Association. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ellen Troutman Hain; a son, Thomas N. of Elizabethville; a daughter, Martha Jane Fulkrod of Elizabethville; three granddaughters; and a great- granddaughter. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Edger, Alfred and Harold; and a sister, Martha Tressler. Services were held Nov. 27 from Hoover Funeral Home in Elizabethville. DALMATIA - Esther J. Schaffner, 73, of Dalmatia, died Wednesday, Nov. 24 at Sunbury Community Hospital. Born March 1, 1931 in Herndon RD, she was the daughter of the late Dorsey and Maude Bordner, and was a 1948 graduate of Lower Mahanoy High School. She was a retired seamstress from the Pillow Shirt Company, and a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Dalmatia; and the Dalmatia Fire Company Auxiliary. Surviving are her husband, Fairvan K. Schaffner; a daughter, Robbin Snyder of Dalmatia; a son, Dale Schaffner of Northumberland; two brothers, Boyd Bordner of Dalmatia and Harry Bordner of Linglestown; a sister, Myrtle P. Scheib of Millersburg; five grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. James A. MILLERSBURG - Nevin O. Scheib, 88, of Medical Road, died Monday, Nov. 22 at Harrisburg Hospital. Born Oct. 9, 1916 in Lykens RD, he was the son of the late Francis and Saloma Welker Scheib. He was a retired self-employed carpenter in Dalmatia RD. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served as a private during World War II. Surviving are his wife, Myrtle P. Bordner Scheib; his daughter-in-law, Barbara Lesher of Halifax; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Nov. 27 from James A. Reed Funeral Home in Pillow. Burial was in Pillow Union Cemetery.

Judy L. Houtz
TOWER CITY - Judy L. Houtz, 60, of 35 E. Grand Ave., died Thursday, Nov. 25 at the home of her daughter in Lykens. Born Dec. 21, 1943 in McConnellsburg, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Beulah Bishop Ray. She was retired from the Tremont Health and Rehabilitation Center where she worked as a CNA for the past 15 years and an office assistant for the past two years. She was a member of Grace Evangelical Congregational Church in Muir. She was the widow of Miles "Jim" Houtz, and also was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Shelley A. Surviving are two daughters, Sandy Kreiser of Lykens and Stephanie L Houtz of Tower City; a son, Todd M. of Tower City; three brothers, Ken Ray of Maryland; Richard Ray of McConnellsburg and Larry Ray of Pennsylvania; three sisters, Audrey Bivens of Big Cove Tannery; Dolly Peffer of Waterfall and Sonnie Stenger of McConnells- burg; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Dimon Funeral Home in Tower City. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Viewing will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at the chapel prior to services.

Shirley L. Czech
MILLERSBURG - Shirley L. Czech, 78, a resident at Susquehanna Lutheran Village, formerly of Shamokin, died Thursday, Nov. 25 at the village. Born in Shamokin, she was the daughter of the late George and Sarah Foltz Knopick. She was retired from the former Champ Hats in Sunbury, and was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Millersburg and Millersburg Senior Center. She was the widow of Bernard A. Czech. Surviving are a son, Bernard J. of Shamokin; a daughter, Frances M. Grexon of Millersburg; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial was held Nov. 30 from her church.
