Mabel Pauline ELLENBERGER, 82, of 26 W. llth St., Tyrone, formerly of
Warriors Mark, R.D., died Friday, June 1, 2001, at 7:22 p.m., at her
residence. Born Dec. 7, 1918, in McAlevys Fort, she was the daughter of
the late David and Delia (Bruner) Keller. She married Ralph Ellenberger
Feb. 21, 1939, at the Warriors Mark Methodist Church, with the Rev.
David M. Kerr officiating. Mr. Ellenberger died March 21, 1982.
Surviving are one daughter and four sons: Viola Van Allman, Tyrone; Gene
(Grant) Ellenberger, Warriors Mark; Ken Ellenberger, Slippery Rock;
Robert Ellenberger, Warriors Mark, R.D.; and Allan Ellenberger,
California. There are ten grandchildren and 16 great- grandchildren.
Three sisters and three brothers are deceased. Mrs. Ellenberger was a
member of the Dungarvin United Methodist Church. She was employed by Big
Yank of Tyrone for three years and later worked for the former Erie
Tech, State College. She enjoyed bingo, yard sales, dancing and spending
time with her family. Funeral services were held June 5, 2001 at the
Bruce E. Cox Funeral Home, Warriors Mark, with the Rev. Donald R. Roher
officiating. Interment was made in the Ross Cemetery, Warriors Mark.

Lougretta A. "Garb" STALLMAN, 93, of Second St., Belleville, died at
4:30 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2001, at Valley View Retirement Community,
Belleville. Born Aug. 31, 1907, in Robertsdale, she was a daughter of
the late Daniel and Betsy (Dempsie) Williams. Her husband, Edward C.
Stallman, preceded her in death Aug. 1, 1966. Surviving are a brother,
Marvin Williams, of Huntingdon, and several nieces and nephews. She was
preceded in death by three sisters and seven brothers. Mrs. Stallman was
a homemaker. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and braiding
rugs. Graveside services were held June 5, 2001 at Salem Cemetery, Shade
Gap, with the Rev. Jeanette Rapp officiating. 

Edward D. YOUNG, 73, of P.O. Box 79, Robertsdale, died Friday, June 1,
2001, at 3:30 p.m., at Huntingdon Manor. He had been in failing health
for the past several months. Born Feb. 13, 1928, in Nittany, he was the
son of the late Ellis E. and Eva (McDowell) Young. He is survived by his
companion, Carol Smith, and two children, Donald Edward Smith and Edward
Donald Young Jr., all at home. Also surviving are the following brothers
and sisters: Ralph Young and Bertha Clippinger, both of Robertsdale,
Gerald Young of Ramsey, N.J., and Lavonne Seigh, Three Springs. He was
preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters. Mr. Young was of the
Protestant faith. He was a coal miner in the No. 9 mine for several
years and also worked as a self-employed carpenter. He owned
and,.operated a confectionery store in Robertsdale and served as Wood
Township supervisor for 13 years. Graveside services were held June
5,2001 in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Cooks, with Pastor Donald Simmons
officiating. 

Russell C. "John" BAUGHMAN, 80, of 201 Hoover Rd., New Grenada, died
June 4, 2001; at 6:15 a.m., at his home. His death was unexpected. Born
Feb. 10, 1921, in Dudley, he was the son of the late Paul and Sally
(Chaney) Baughman. He married LaVerne Chaney March 21, 1954, in
Cumberland, Md. Mrs. Baughman survives at home, along with the following
children: Russell D. Baughman, Three Springs; T.J. Figard, Six Mile Run;
and Darlene Stoner, Seminole, Fla. There are 14 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren. One son, Daryl J. Baughman, preceded him in death.
Five siblings survive: Mildred Foster, Wells Tannery; Edna Morris,
Everett; Robert Baughman, Three Springs; Roy Baughman, North Tonawanda,
N.Y.; and Paul Baughman, Great Valley, N.Y. Two brothers, Clair and
Glenn Baughman, are deceased. Mr. Baughman was a member of the Broad Top
Church of the Nazarene and the Saxton VFW. A veteran of the U.S. Army
during World War II, he retired in 1982 as a truck driver for Quality
Concrete in Tonawanda, N.Y, after 20 years of service. Funeral services
will be held Friday, June 8, at 11 a.m., at the D. Ronald Long Funeral
Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor Rupert Gage officiating. Interment will be
made in the Garden of Honor at the Mount Union Cemetery, with full
military honors. 

Janet L. WILLIAMS, 63, of 221 Church St., Huntingdon, died Monday, June
4, 2001, at 11:15 a.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.
Born July 26, 1937, in Shavers Creek Valley, she was the daughter of the
late Edward E. and Alice (Grove) Price. She married Stanley D. Williams
Dec. 31, 1955, at the Ardenheim Church of the Brethren. Mr. Williams
survives at home, along with two children: Debbie K. Krum of Cedar
Rapids, Iowa; and Steven D. Williams of Huntingdon, R.D. 3. There are
six grandchildren. Also surviving are the following siblings: Wilmer
Price, Shirleysburg; Lester Price, Etters; Gerald Price, Wrightsville;
Luella McClain, Huntingdon; and Clara Rinker, Mechanicsburg. One brother
preceded her in death. Mrs. Williams was a member of the Ardenheim
Brethren Church. She was first employed at !Jnion National Bank in
Huntingdon and then at C.E. Brown's Garage on Route 22, Huntingdon. She
also worked for Gateway Foods in the accounting department as a
bookkeeper, and for the J.B. Kunz Company. A 1955 graduate of Huntingdon
High School, she loved hunting, fishing and flower gardening. Funeral
services will be held Thursday, June 7, at 2 p.m., at the Robert E.
Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. George "Buddy" Baird
officiating. Interment will be made in the Germany Valley Cemetery,
Shirleysburg, R.D. 

Daniel YANKANISH, 64, of Cassville, died at 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, June 5,
2001, at the James E. Van- Zandt VA Medical Center, Altoona. Born Aug.
11, 1936, in Wood, he was the son of the late Michael Yankanish and
Annaa (Worhatch) Yankanish, who survives in Cassville. He married Rita
Lanigan Jan. 9,1959. In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived
by two daughters: Judith Ann Sjostrom of Norristown and Patrice Ann
Bellamy, Phoenixville. There are four grandchildren. Also surviving are
two sisters: Irene Miller of Norristown and Olive Wyden of Escondido,
Calif. Mr. Yankanish was a member of St. Michael's Orthodox Church in
Wood. He worked as a truck driver at Glasow, Inc. During the Korean War,
he served in the U.S. Air Force.He held memberships in the Watson-Black
American Legion Post 126, Broad Top; Captain Phillips Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 4129; and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No.
4426, Broad Top. Funeral services will be held at St. Michael's Orthodox
Church, at 10 a.m. Friday, June 8, with the Pev. Stephen Kundla
officiating. Interment will be made in the church's cemetery, with full
military honors. 

Dorothy Louise BURKHART, 83, formerly of Allentown, died Monday, June 4,
2001, at 12:40 p.m., at The Oaks at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon, where
she had resided for the past two years. Born April 9, 1918, in
Breinigsville, she was the daughter of the late Clayton Lewis and Edith
E. (Snyder) Krum. She married Jack Burkhart Nov. 7, 1941, in Bethlehem.
He preceded her in death Feb. 20, 1967. Surviving are the following
children: Carol S. Normington, Allentown; Craig L. Burkhart, Atlantic
Beach, Fla.; Patricia E. Eisenhart, HCR 61, Mill Creek; Peter D.
Burkhart, Bethlehem; and Jay S. Burkhart, Doylestown. There are 11
grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren. Also surviving are two
brothers, Jonathan S. Krum of Allentown and Robert H. Snyder of Lady
Lake, Fla. One sister, Josephine R. Krum, preceded heir in death. Mrs.
Burkhart was a member of the Calvary Moravian Church in Allentown, where
she was a Sunday School teacher and member of the Women's Fellowship of
her church. She was a Girl Scout leader and had been active in the
Allentown PTA. A 1936 graduate of Allentown Allen High School and a 1939
graduate of Allentown School of Nursing, she retired from private duty
as a registered nurse at Allentown Hospital. A memorial service will be
held Saturday, June 9, at 11 a.m., at the Calvary Moravian Church, 948
N. 21st St., Allentown, with the Rev. Blair Couch officiating. Interment
will be private at the convenience of the family. 

Margaret E. "Betty" GUISLER, 89, a resident of Valley View Haven Nursing
Home, Belleville, formerly of Highland Avenue, Taylor Highlands,
Huntingdon, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at 9:40 a.m., at the nursing
home. Born Nov. 8, 1911, in Huntingdon, she was.the daughter of the late
Charles and Ruth (Kimmel) Rudy. She married William Martin Guisler April
4, 1935, at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church,.Huntingdon, with the
Rev. Dr. Edmund L. Manges officiating. Mr. Guisler preceded her in death
Sept. 13, 1994. . Surviving are two sons: William M. Guisler Jr. of
Nashville, Tenn., and Thomas Rudy Guisler of Huntingdon. There are two
grandchildren. One brother and one sister survive: Charles Rudy of
Joshua Tree, Calif., and Marilyn of Huntingdon. A sister, Jane, is
deceased. Mrs. Guisler was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran
Church, Huntingdon. She has, been a member of the Huntingdon Country
Club since 1935 and also held membership in the Daughters of the
American Revolution and was a former member of the Soroptimist Club of
Huntingdon County. A graduate of Huntingdon High School, she was
primarily a homemaker. She had been a lifetime resident of Huntingdon
county and had lived at the nursing home since 1997. Mrs. Guisler was an
avid reader, enjoyed golfing and playing bridge. A private graveside
funeral service will be held at the convenience of. the family with the
Rev. Peter Naschke officiating. Interment will be made in Riverview
Cemetery, Huntingdon. 

Lenore M. GILLIGAN, 84, of Pennsylvania Furnace, died Wednesday, June 6,
2001, at Centie Crest. Born Jan. 14, 1917, in Spruce Creek she was the
daughter of the late Philip and Lola (Waite) Carper. She married Ronald
L. Gilligan, who survives at home. In addition to her husband, she is
survived by a daughter and a son, Dawn L. Harpster and Ronald J.
Gilligan, both of Pennsylvania Furnace. There are three grandchildren.
One sister, Mary Hite of State College, survives. She was preceded in
death by three brothers, Blair, Claude and John Carper. Mrs. Gilligan
was a member of the Fairbrook United Methodist Church. A graduate of the
Warriors Mark High School, she managed the family farm with her husband.
She was a member of the Baileyville Grange and loved going to auctions
and working on the farm. She especially enjoyed helping others in need.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 11, at 11 a.m., at the Koch
Funeral Home, State College, with the Rev. Carl D. Campbell and the Rev.
Gene W. McCallips officiating. Interment will be made in the Pine Hall
Cemetery. 

Jeremiah H. "Jere" MENTZER, 72, of 1370 Third Ave., Chambersburg, died
Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at 7:31 p.m., at the Harrisburg Hospital. Born
April 10, 1929, in Kistler, he was the son of the late Russell and Olive
(Gutshall) Mentzer. He married Linda C. McNerlin Aug. 3 1, 1956. Mrs.
Mentzer survives at home, along with the following children: Cyndie
Mentzer, Mechanicsburg; Mrs. Jeff (Susan) Hull, Chambersburg; and Rodney
Mentzer, Lawton, Okla. There are four grandchildren. One grandson is
deceased. Also surviving are seven siblings: Esther Wagner, Lewistown;
Helen Mellott, Mount Union; Blaine Mentzer, Mill Creek; Grace Miller,
Shirleysburg; Merrill Mentzer, Shippensburg; Flo Scott, Mount Union; and
Dale Mentzer, Wilmington, Del. In addition to his parents, Mr. Mentzer
was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. Mr. Mentzer was
of the Protestant faith. He retired as a logistician at Letterkenny Army
Depot in Chambersburg, after 38 years of service. During the Korean War,
he served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Charles
Nitterhouse Post No. 1599, VFW; Hume, McNeal, Byers AMVETS Post 224, and
Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46, all of Chambersburg. He was an
avid fisherman, hunter and fiddle player. A memorial service will be
held at the Chapel of the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg,
Monday, June 11, 2001, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Raymond Crownover
officiating. Interment will be made in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens,
Chambersburg. 

Lehman V. ANDERSON, 80, of 995 Singingwood Dr., Arcadia, Calif.,
formerly of Huntingdon, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at the Methodist
Hospital, in Arcadia, after an extended illness. Born July 6, 1920, in
Huntingdon, he was a son of the late Chester Irvin and Elsie Pearte
(Bupp) Anderson. He married Hazel Yingling in Bel Air, Md. Surviving are
his wife of 60 years, two brothers and two sisters: Chester Anderson and
Richard Anderson, Jeanne Bayges and Maxine Streightiff, all of
Huntingdon. Several nieces and nephews survive. Mr. Anderson was of the
Protestant faith. He retired as owner/operator of Penn Engineering Co.
in Los Angeles, Calif. Previously he had been employed as a welder for
Bethlehem Shipbuilding Co. in Baltimore, Md. He had also worked for the
Huntingdon Silk Mill and J.C. Blair Co. A 1939 graduate of Huntingdon
High SchooL he attended Woodbury College in Los Angeles. He was an Army
Air Corps veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of corporal. Mr.
Anderson enjoyed boating and fishing. Funeral services with military
rites will be held at 2 p.m. at the John C. Bolger Funeral Home, Inc.,
Martinsburg, Sunday, June 10, with Pastor Earl E. Herr officiating.
Private interment will be made at Greenlawn Cemetery, Roaring Spring. 

Charles Edward MANN, 76, of 2738 Warm Springs Road, Huntingdon, died at
7:48 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, at his residence. Born September 20,
1924, in Standing Stone, he was the son of the late Burgess and Blanche
(Roff) Mann. He married Cleola Williams March 12, 1948 in Cumberland,
Md. She survives at their residence. Also surviving are three sons, Gary
Mann of Mechanicsburg, Mark Mann of State College and Dennis Mann of
Roxbury, and two granddaughters. His sisters, Doris Bouren of
Greenville, S.C. and.Elouise Mann of Towanda also survive. Mr. Mann was
a member of the Fifteenth St. United Methodist Church in Huntingdon. He
had been a resident of Huntingdon since 1952 after moving from
Bellefonte. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1754,
Huntingdon, and the Pioneers of Bell Telephone. He had a love for sprint
car racing and motorcycles. From 1942 to 1946 he served during World Way
II in the United States Army Signals Corps. He was employed with Bell
Telephone for 32 years as a line foreman and retired in 1984. Funeral
services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 11, at the Cutright-Speck
Funeral Home, 207 Ridge Road, Smithfield Township. The Rev. David L.
Dearing will officiate. Interment will be made at the Huntingdon
Memorial Gardens, Walker Township. 

Gladys V. BROWN, 82, of Huston Hill Road, Hustontown, died Sunday
morning, June 10, 2001, at her home in Dublin Township, Fulton County.
Born May 28, 1919, in Letterkenny Township, Franklin County, she was the
daughter of the late Thomas and Mabel (Diehl) West. She married Reuben
F. Brown Oct. 24. 1936. Mr. Brown survives at the Extended Care Unit of
the Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg. Two daughters survive:
Patricia Knepper and Betty McClain. both of McConnellsburg. There are
five grandchildren. seven great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandson. One son, Blaine, died Dec. 22, 2000, and two
grandsons, Scott Brown and Kevin Knepper are also deceased. A sister,
Miriam Hockenberry of Orrstown, survives. She was preceded in death by a
brother. Mrs. Brown was a member of the Clear Ridge United Methodist
Church, North Clear Ridge Road, Hustontown. She worked at Sagner. Inc.,
McConnellsburg, for over 20 years. She later worked as a cook at local
restaurants. She was last employed at Sunny Ridge Restaurant, Shade Gap.
Mrs. Brown’s hobby was quilting. Funeral services will be held at 10
a.m. Wednesday, June 13, at the MR. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown, with
Pastor Brian Sweeney officiating. Interment will be made in the Clear
Ridge Cemetery, North Clear Ridge Road, Hustontown. 

Grace Rebecca (Whitsel) FOGAL, 94, of Neelyton, died at the Chambersburg
Hospital Sunday, June 10, 2001, at 12:20 p.m. Born Dec. 2,1906, in Hill
Valley, Cromwell Township, Huntingdon County, she was a daughter of the
late Daniel P. and Rhoda (Hamman) Whitsel. She was united in marriage to
Wilbert V. Fogal Sept. 29, 1925, by the Rev. J.A. Ryder, pastor of the
Church of the Brethren in Hagerstown, Md. He preceded her in death Sept.
17, 1974. Surviving are three daughters and a son: Mrs. Anthony (Evelyn)
Tree, Mount Union; Mrs. Leirwyn (Mary) Montague; Mrs. Ronald (Patricia)
Wolford and James W. Foogal, all of Neelyton. There are ten
grandchildren. 20 great-grandchildren two great-great-grandchildren, one
step great-granddaughter. and two step great-great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by two grandsons; Gains B. Daniel and an infant
son of James and Eleanor Fogal, and one granddaughter, Jerri Ann Daniel.
The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was preceded in
death by four brothers and four sisters; Theodore Whitsel, Elwood
Whitsel, Hayden Whitsel, Clay Whitsel, Mrs. Grover (Cora) Moore, Mrs.
Clair (Catherine) Smith, Mrs. Harvey (Rosetta) Miller and Mrs. George
(Malissa) Ewing. Mrs. Fogal attended the Whitseltown Elementary School
in Hill Valley and Mount Union High School. She was a member of St.
Luke’s United Methodist Church of Shade Gap, the United Methodist Women,
Shade Gap Fire Company Auxiliary and the Shade Gap Golden Agers. Funeral
services will be held at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. Shade Gap,
Wednesday, June 13, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Virginia Eminhizer
officiating. Interment will be made in the Salem Cemetery, Blairs Mills,
R.D. 

Vera M. BERZANSKY, 88, of Pennknoll Village, Bedford, formerly of
Saxton, RD., died Monday, June 11, 2001, at 6:04 am., at UPMC Bedford
Memorial Hospital. Her death was unexpected. Born April 19, 1913. in
Saxton. RD., she was the daughter of the late Daniel Bursey and
Elizabeth Carberry. She first married William Grihble and later married
John Berzansky. They both preceded her in death. One sister, Dollie
Brode of the Woodland Retirement Center, and several nieces and nephews
survive. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Brode and Edna
Arcq. Mrs. Berzansky was of the Protestant faith. She enjoyed attending
revivals and hymn sings. She retired from the dietary department of the
Bedford Hospital after 30 years. Funeral services will be held Thursday,
June 14, at 2 p.m., at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with
Pastor Kathy Speck officiating. Interment will be made in Grandview
Cemetery, Saxton, R.D. 

Jonah R. GRUBB, 80, of James Creek, RD. 1, died Sunday. June I0, 2001,
at 8:45 p.m., at his residence. He had been in failing health for the
past year. Born March 26, 1921, in Penn township, he was the son of the
late Joseph A. and Mary R. (Schell) Grubb. He married Jean B. Rodgers
Jan. 15, l946. in Penn Township, with the Rev. Irvin Brumbaugh
officiating. Mrs. Grubb survives at home. along with one daughter and a
son: Mrs Barry (Lois) Ayers of Martinsburg and Gary Gruhb of James
Creek. There are two granddaughters and two great-grandsons. His twin
brother, John H. Grubb of Hesston, survives, along with a brother,
George A. Grubb of Broad Top. Three sisters and a brother preceded him
in death: Dorothy (Grubb) Angelo, Mary Helen (Grubb) Norris, Betty
Grubb, who died in infancy, and Joseph Grubb. Mr. Grubb was a member of
the Woodcock Valley Bible Church, James Creek. He had worked as a
woodcutter in the James Creek area and later worked for H.T. Reynolds
and Sons, Inc., for approximately 20 years. He attended the Mill School
House in Penn Township and had been a resident of Huntingdon County
since 1921. He had lived at his current residence for 42 years. Mr.
Grubb was an avid outdoors man and enjoyed fishing, hunting and small
engine repair. A funeral service will be held at 2p.m. Wednesday, June
13, at the Woodcock Valley Bible Church, James Creek, with the Rev,
George Calvin Baird officiating. Interment will be made in the Old Stone
Church Cemetery, Penn Township, James Creek. 

Helen M. SPICKLER, 80, of John Street, McVeytown, died at 10:42 pm.
Sunday, June 10, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown.
Born June 3, 1921, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Walter
0. and Ida M. (Yetter) Jones. She married Walter F. Spickler March 6,
1941. He preceded her in death Aug. 15, 2000. Surviving are the
following children: Mrs. Dyson (Linda) Fisher, Mrs. James (Brenda)
Swigart and Ronald 0. Spickler, all of McVeytown; Walter Sheldon
Spickler, Lewistown; Mrs. James (Darlene) Wagner, Burnham. There are 24
grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She
was preceded in death by a son, P. Keith Spickler, in 1997. One brother,
Melvin G. Jones of Texas, survives. Six brothers and sisters are
deceased: Betty Hale, Marie Clemens, Raymond Jones, Marietta Wagner,
Kenneth D. Jones and Barbara Leach. Early in life, Mrs. Spickler worked
at the American Viscose Corporation in Lewistown, the William Penn
Nursing Home in Lewistown and in the cafeteria of the Rothrock High
School, McVeytown. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Spickler was a member of
the Spring Run Church of the Brethren and a former Girl Scout leader in
McVeytown. She enjoyed reading. Funeral services will be held at 1p.m.
Wednesday, June 13, at the Spring Run Church of the Brethren, 6712
Ferguson Valley Rd., McVeytown, with the Rev. Jeny Lee Miller
officiating. Interment will be made in the Juniata Memorial Park,
Lewistown. 

Mae (Ellenberger) WAY, 92, of Westminster Place, Oakmont, formerly of
1905 Moore St., Huntingdon, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at 5:25 am., at
the Presbyterian Senior Care Medical Center, Oakmont. Born Nov. 19,
1908, at Warriors Mark, RD., Ferguson Township, Centre County, she was
the daughter of the late Arthur S. and Maude Olive (Myers) Ellenberger.
She married Dr. Edwin Ellsworth Way June 24, 1931, in State College. Mr.
Way preceded her in death July 8, 1967. Surviving are two daughters:
Jane Karen Way of Pittsburgh and Susan Karlyn Way of Cleveland Heights,
Ohio. One brother, Ray Ellenberger of State College, survives. She was
preceded in death by two brothers, George J. Ellenberger and Eugene W.
Ellenberger. Mrs. Way was a member of the First United Methodist Church,
Huntingdon. She was active in church affairs, especially those relating
to the children of the church. She was also a member of the United
Methodist Women, served on the board and the council of ministries of
the church and was a member of the board of Children’s Services of
Huntingdon County. She taught school in Ferguson Township, Centre
County, and in State College. After her husband’s death, she was a
substitute teacher in Huntingdon and taught pre-school at the Jack and
Jill Nursery School in Huntingdon. Mrs. Way attended the public schools
of Ferguson Township and graduated from State College High School. She
received her teaching certificate from Lock Haven University and
performed post-graduate studies at the Pennsylvania State University.
She had been a resident of Huntingdon County since 1936 and had lived
at her current residence for eight months. A memorial service will be
held at the First United Methodist Church, Fifth and Muffin streets,
Huntingdon, Sunday, June 17, at 3:30 p.m.. with the Rev. Doyle H.
Klinger Jr. officiating. Private interment will be made at the Friends
Cemetery, Half Moon Township, Centre County. 

Edith E. BLACK, 94, of Morrison’s Cove Home, Martinsburg, died June 14,
2001. at the home. Born April 15, 1907, in Taylor Township, she was the
daughter of the late Daniel and Susanna (Baker) Rock. She married Melvin
W. Black in 1959. in Wood. He preceded her in death Sept. 29. 1986. Many
nieces and nephews survive. Mrs. Black was a member of the Martinsburg
Memorial Church of the Brethren. She was a homemaker and enjoyed
quilting, crocheting and baking pies. Funeral services will be held at 1
p.m., Saturday, June 16, at the S. Gerald Weaver Funeral Home, Woodbury,
with Pastor Floyd Mitchell officiating. Interment will be made in the
IOOF Cemetery, Broad Top, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. 

Beverly J. CONWAY, 61, of 1 W. Market St., Mount Union, died at 2:18
p.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon. She had been in failing health. Born Jan. 20, 1940, in Mount
Union, she was the daughter of the late Charles R. "Pick" Sr. and Sara
E. (Skipper) Conway. She is survived by a son, James R. Conway of HCR
61, Mill Creek, and two grandsons. One brother and a sister survive:
Charles R. "Sonny" Conway Jr., Lake Placid, Fla.; and Carol C.
Karstetter of Calvin. She was preceded in death by a brother, Chester
Thomas Conway. Mrs. Conway was a member of the Christian and Missionary
Alliance Church of Mount Union, where she was an assistant Sunday School
teacher in the nursery department. She also served as treasurer of
missions and was a past church board member. She was also treasurer of
the Mount Union Booster Club and was an ardent and energetic supporter
of Mount Union sports programs. She was a member of the Mount Union Area
Alumni Association and was secretary/treasurer of the Mount Union Burial
Association for many years. A 1957 graduate of Captain Jack High School,
she retired June 1, 2001, from the Huntingdon County Commissioners,
where she worked in the office of the Mount Union district justice
Michael Colyer for 32 years. Funeral services will be held at 11 am.
Saturday, June 16, at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church,
Mount Union, with the Rev. Stephen Motter officiating. Interment will be
made in the Haven Rest Memorial Park, Shirleysburg, RD. 1. 

Clinton A. McGHEE, 82, of Josephine Kelly Apartments, Saxton, died
Thursday, June 14, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.
Born Nov. 23, 1918, in Finleyville, he was the son of the late Henry and
Etta (Rabenstine) McGhee. He married Glendean Lane Aug. 23, 1943, in
Ray’s Cove, with the Rev. Coy Foor officiating. In addition to his wife,
he is survived by three children: James McGhee of Saxton; Trudy Mitchell
of Saxton, RD., and Terry McGhee of Broad Top. There are seven
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are the
following siblings: Ruth Chamberlain, Coalmont; Delmot McGhee.
Chambersburg; Merle ‘Hump" McGhee and Dean "Zip" McGhee of Dudley. He
was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers: Gladys Mitchell,
Vera Black, Walter McGhee and Dallas McGhee. Mr. McGhee had worked as a
mechanic at Eastern Express and had also worked as a coal miner. He was
a member of the Broad Top Church of God. During World War II, he served
as a private in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1945. He was a life member
of the Captain Phillips VFW Post 4129, Saxton. and the Watson-Black
American Legion Post 126, Broad Top. Mr. McGhee enjoyed hunting and
fishing. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday. June 18, at the
Curtis A. Heath Funeral Home, Broad Top, with Pastor John Robinson and
Pastor Marion Foor officiating. Interment will be made in the IOOF
Cemetery, Broad Top. 

Bertha Temple PLYMIRE, 99, ff Monroeville, died Thursday, June 14, 2001,
at 10:15 p.m.. at Beverly Manor. Monroeville. Born May 1, 1902, in
Petersburg, she was the daughter of the late Issac S. and Laura (Forest)
Temple. She married Dr Issac S. Plymire, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are two grandchildren. two great-granddaughters and many
nieces and nephews. Mrs. Plymire was of the Presbyterian faith. She had
been a practical nurse and was formerly of the Petersburg area. She had
resided in the Pittsburgh area for many years. Funeral services will he
held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 19, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home,
Juniata Valley Chapel, 412 Main St., Alexandria, with the Rev. John C.
Dean officiating. Interment will be private in the Cedar Grove Cemetery,
Petersburg. 

Thomas Rodgers STREIGHTIFF, 67, of 441 Sunnymeade Rd., Huntingdon
(Oneida Township), died at 11 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2001, at J.C. Blair
Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, following an extended illness. He was
born Aug. 25, 1933, at the family home in Huntingdon, the son of Charles
A. and Ella M. (Bilger) Streightiff who survive in Huntingdon. He was
married to Huldah C. Mateer Aug. 23, 1952, at the Allensville Lutheran
Church by the Rev. John Stanbaugh. Mrs. Streightiff survives at their
Oneida Township home. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr.
Streightiff is survived by his twin sons, Thomas A. Streightiff of Three
Springs and Charles A. Streightiff of Huntingdon; and two daughters,
Mrs. John (Gayle) Young and Betty Streightiff, both of Huntingdon. There
are five grandchildren. A sister, Sandra Sue King of Etters, also
survives. Mr. Streightiff was a member of theFifteenth Street United
Methodist Church for over 50 years and a lifetime member of the 20th
Century Sunday School Class. He graduated from Huntingdon High School in
the Class of 1952. He was a varsity letterman in both football and track
and field. He served for a brief time with the U.S. Navy Reserve. Mr.
Streightiff was a plumber by trade. He had been employed first by Sam
Foust Plumbing and Juniata College. He retired from SCI Huntingdon in
July 1984, following 16 years as a trades instructor in the plumbing
shop. After his retirement, he had been employed by Griffith Oil Company
as a service manager until 1994. He was a member of Chestnut Springs
Hunting Club of Jack’s Mountain, Big Valley, and was an avid hunter. He
had coached the Giants team of the Huntingdon Little League for 15
years, Southside team in the Huntingdon City League for 13 years and was
also an officer in the Huntingdon Teener League. He bowled in the
Huntingdon Church League for 20 years. Mr. Streightiff was a lifetime
resident of Huntingdon County was a resident of his Oneida Township home
since April 1971. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June
18, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, 207 Ridge Road, Smithfield
Township, with the Rev. David L. Dearing officiating. Interment will be
made in Mooreseville Cemetery, Neffs Mills.

May DONALDSON, 84, of 323 Farmers Valley Rd., Hopewell, died Sunday,
June 17, 2001, at 10:45 am., at the Valley View Nursing Home in Altoona,
where she had resided since April. She died following an extended
illness. Born Oct. 22, 1916, in Hopewell, RD., she was the daughter of
the late Chester V. and Mary F. (Hall) Young. She married Thomas H.
Donaldson May 17, 1939, in Winchester. Va. He preceded her in death
Feb. 16, 1968. Surviving are a son, D. Ralph Donaldson of Hopewell, with
whom she resided; and two daughters: Mary Ellen Corle of Hopewell, RD.,
and Eva May Troutwein of Defiance. There are nine grandchildren and
nine great-grandchildren. Four siblings also survive: Chester "Pete"
Young, Ball, La.; Curtis B. Young. Fishertown; and Helen Fleck and
Louise Thompson, both of Hopewell. She was preceded in death by three
sisters and five brothers: Anna O’Neal, Lois O’Neal, Betty Young, James
Young. Benjamin Young, Harry Young, Glenn Young and Robert Young. Mrs.
Donaldson was a member of St. Paul’s Reformed Church of Christ, Yellow
Creek. A 1934 graduate of Robert P Smith High School in Yellow Creek,
she was a farmer and homemaker for most of her life. Funeral services
will be held Thursday, June 21, at 1 p.m., at St. Paul’s Reformed Church
of Christ, Yellow Creek, with Pastor Gary Sams officiating. Interment
will be made in St. Paul’s Reformed Cemetery, Yellow Creek. 

Asparuk "Butch" ABRASHOFF, 88, of 216 E. Shirley St., Mount Union, died
Saturday, June 16, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. He had been in
failing health for several years. Born Sept. 7, 1912, in Steelton, he
was the son of the late Tasse and Mary (Behofcist) Abrashoff. He was
first married to Ann E. Abrashoff, who preceded him in death Nov. 20,
1975. His second marriage was to Lena (Parsons) Price. She survives at
home, along with stepchildren: Lolita Secrest of Lewistown and Lawrence
Wilson of Mount Union, R.D. 2. There are four step-grandchildren, six
step-great-grandchildren and six step-great-great-grandchildren. Two
stepchildren preceded him in death: Harry Wilson and Louise
Daughenbaugh. along with one step-grandchild. One brother and two
sisters survive: Donald Abrashoff, Altoona; Nada Rinker, Prudence
Island, RI.; and Jean Parker, New York, N.Y. Three brothers and a sister
are deceased. Mr. Abrashoff was of the Orthodox faith. He was co-owner
and operator of Mount Union Beverage, retiring in 1979, after 43 years
of service. During World War II,he served as a sergeant in the US Army
with Company F, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Division. He received the
European-Asian-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with two bronze
stars and the Purple Heart in the European Theater. Mr. Abrashoff was a
member and past president of the Simpson-Hunt Post No. 107, American
Legion in Mount Union and a life member of the Blue Juniata VFW Post No.
5754, also of Mount Union. He was an avid sports fan. Interment will be
made in the Garden of Honor in the Mount Union Cemetery. 

Eleanor M. BARRICK, 69, of Rockhill Furnace, died at 7:20 p.m. Sunday,
June 17, 2001, at the Altoona Hospital. Born April 9, 1932, in Three
Springs, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Mary (Parks)
Peterson. She married George W. Barrick Nov. 4, 1950, in Hagerstown. Md.
Mr. Barrick survives at home, along with three children: Wanda L.
Snyder, HCR 75, Shade Gap; Pat A. Barrick, Three Springs, R.R. 2; and
Sharon D. Miller, HCR 62, Shade Gap. There are four grandchildren and
one great-granddaughter Also surviving are five siblings: Duane
Peterson, Martinsburg, W.Va.; Delores Watkins, Chambersburg; Dale
Peterson, Three Springs; Geraldine Harrison, Plainview, Neb.; and Guy
Peterson, California. Mrs. Barrick was a member of the Orbisonia
Assembly of God Church. She was primarily a homemaker and she was also
employed by Robin Footwear in Mount Union. More recently, she had worked
at The Cottage Restaurant, Shade Gap. Funeral services will be held at 2
p.m. Wednesday, June 20, at the Orbisonia Assembly of God Church, with
the Rev. Paul Allen and the Rev. Henry Shaeffer officiating. Interment
will be made in the Three Springs Cemetery. 

Mary E. HALL, 88, of 102 Blanche St., Bedford, formerly of Saxton, RD.,
died Monday, June 18, 2001, at 6 p.m., at the home of her daughter,
Nancy Walton of Bedford. She had been in failing health. Born Nov. 1,
1912, in Dudley, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Nancy E.
(VonMoss) Fessler. She married Fred B. Hall Sept. 4, 1929, in Dudley. He
preceded her in death Aug. 20, 1987. Surviving are the following
children: Doris Eschelman, Everett; Melvin L. Hall and Kenneth E. Hall,
both of Dudley; Joseph C. Hall and Chester A. Hall, both of Saxton; Mrs.
Sonny (Florence) Hess, James Creek; Alton L. Hall, Broad Top, RD.;
Samuel F. Hall, Bedford; Mrs. Ronald (Fern) Otto, Tiffin, Ohio; Mrs.
Mike (Nancy) Walton, Bedford. There are 32 grandchildren, 58
great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was wtcedtd in
death by a daughter, Ruth Douglas, and 4 grandchildren. Six siblings
survive: Hazel Jones, Sam Fessler and Vera Fessler, all of Dudley;
Robert Fessler and George Fessler, both of Saxton; and Mrs. Jim (Bunny)
Coy, Meadville. Two brothers, Howard and Joseph, are deceased. Mrs. Hall
was a member of the Finleyville Union Church and also attended the
Riddlesburg Bible Church. She was a homemaker. Funeral services will be
held Friday, June 22, at 11 am., at the Riddlesburg Bible Church, with
the Rev. John Miller and the Rev. Jesse Musser officiating. Interment
will be made in the Reformed Cemetery, Yellow Creek. 

Eva May OSKORIP, 92, of Ginter, died Sunday, June 17, 2001. at the
Clearfield Hospital. Born Jan. 22, 1909, in Mercersburg, she was the
daughter of James R. and Leah N. (Grosh) Angle. She married John Oskorip
June 16, 1951, in Upton. He preceded her in death March 15, 1986.
Surviving are two children: Mrs. James (LeAnn) Sedgwick of Curwensville
and Mrs. Donald (Diann) Rodgers, Hagerstown, Md. There are four
grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Three siblings survive: Fred Angle of Saltillo, Henry Angle of
Lemasters, and Thelma Mijanovich of Hagerstown, Md. A number of nieces
and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel
Angle, and a brother, Noble Angle. Mrs. Oskorip was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church in Houtzdale, where she was a Sunday School
superintendent and teacher and directed the church Bible school. She
received her bachelor’s degree in education from Shippensburg College in
1933 and returned to Shippensburg in 1934 for additional elementary
education credits. She later attended Johns Hopkins University for
advanced study in education. She retired in 1951 from the Hancock School
District in Maryland. Mrs. Oskorip was a past member of the Cumberland
valley Choristers. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 21, at 1
p.m., at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home, Inc., Houtzdale, with the
Rev.Thomas McCoy officiating. Interment will be made in the IOOF
Cemetery, Brisbin. 

Paul E. HICKES, 81, of Center Union, Oneida Township, died Monday
evening, June 18, 2001, in an automobile accident near his home. Born
March 3, 1920, in Huntingdon County, he was the son of the late Paul
Ernest Sr. and Hazel (McElwee) Hickes. He married Frances F. Foster
April 30, 1941. She survives in Alexandria. Also surviving are four
sons: Paul Dennis Hickes of Petersburg; David Alan Hickes of
Crownsville, Md.; Andrew James Hickes of New York, N.Y. and Howard
Clinton Hickes, Huntingdon. There are numerous grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. One sister, Martha Hickes Powell of Santa Cruz,
Calif. survives. He was preceded in death by his sister, Esther Hickes,
and his companion of 24 years, Marie Wensel. Mr. Hickes graduated from
Huntingdon High School in 1938 and earned his bachelor of science degree
in business and economics from Juniata College in 1941. After working as
a passenger train brakeman for the Pennsylvania Railroad, he enlisted in
the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following officers’ training school,
he served as an ensign on a supply ship in Japan. After completing his
tour of duty, he remained in the Naval Reserves. Mr. Hickes interned
with Tyrone area contractor Jack Yenter for three years before starting
Paul F. Hickes Construction Company out of his home in Alexandria, in
1953. He retired from the company in 1992. Among the many projects
undertaken during his career, Hickes Construction built several
buildings on the Juniata campus, including Ellis Hall, Kennedy Sports +
Recreation Center, LA. Beeghly Library, various housing facilities and
an observatory that was dedicated in Mr. Hickes’ honor. His company also
built the two additions to the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital building in
Huntingdon, as well as various buildings on the Penn State Altoona and
University Park campuses. Mr Hickes was the first president of the
Associated Building Contractors. He served as one of eight commissioners
of the Pennsylvania Game Commission from March 1980 until April 1988,
and was president of the board of commissioners from January 1982 until
January 1984. He was a member of the Jaycees and the Masons, Huntingdon
Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a member of
the Wild Turkey Federation, Harry’s Valley Rod and Gun Club and Standing
Stone VFW Post 1754, Huntingdon. Mr. Hickes was an avid hunter and
fisherman and made friendships all over the world while pursuing those
pastimes. He frequently treated his friends and family to join him on
his trips. It is thanks to his efforts that the tradition of legal
absences from school for the first two days of buck season exists. He
was a significant benefactor of Juniata College. An enthusiastic
environmentalist, Mr. Hickes has arranged for the majority of his land
in the area to remain undeveloped as part of the Clean and Green
program. Memorial services will be held at the Fifteenth Street United
Methodist Church, Huntingdon, Friday, June 22, at 1 p.m., with the Rev.
David L. Dearing officiating. 

Jay KAUFMAN, 92, of Hollywood, Fla., died Sunday, June 17, 2001. He was
born in Cleveland, Ohio, and was reared in an orphanage until he was 16.
His wife. Miriam. preceded him in death several years ago He is survived
by a son Bernard, in Hollywood, Ma., and two grandchildren. During World
War II, he served in the Pacific for three years. He and his wife moved
to Huntingdon in the mid 1940’s and took over the ownership of People’s
Furniture Store on Washington Street, which he operated successfully for
approximately 25 years. He retired to Florida. Mr. Kaufman was a 32nd
degree Mason of the local chapter and was a member of the Agudath Achim
Synagogue. Interment was made in Florida. 

Mary I. KREGER, 75 of 26 W. Market St., Lewistown, died Tuesday, June
19, 2001, at 7 p.m., at her residence. Born Oct. 17, 1925, in
Reedsville, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Agnes (Shearer)
Paden. Her first husband, Walter Bousum, died in 1971. Her second
husband, Gerrett Kreger, preceded her in death in 1973. Surviving are
four children: Barbara Bushland, Petersburg: Robert Bousum, Florida;
Sara Schultheis, Tennessee: and Iva Bousum, Illinois. There are five
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Four siblings also survive:
Cloyd Paden, Belleville; Jane Couch, Pecutershurg: Thomas Paden and Mrs.
Al (Barbara) Wilson, both of Belleville. Memorial services will be held
Sunday. June 24, at 7 p.m.. at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St.,
Lewistown, with the Rev. Douglas Sherlock Jr. officiating. Interment
will be private. 

Veda A. RANKIN, 93, of Donahoe Manor Nursing Home, Bedford, formerly of
Six Mile Run, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at 5:15 am., at the nursing
home. She had been in failing health for the past several months. Born
Oct. 28, 1907, in Hopewell Township, Bedford County, she was the
daughter of the late J William and Effie (Horton) Fluke She married
James Rankin Oct. 29, 1937. in Duncansville. He preceded her in death
Nov..5, 1967. Her sole survivor is a niece, Joan Fluke of Hopewell. Mrs.
Rankin was of the Methodist faith and was primarily a homemaker. Funeral
services will be held Saturday, June 23, at 2 p.m., at the D. Ronald
Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor Todd Templeton officiating.
Interment will be made in the Everett Cemetery. 

Robert F. WELLIVER, 71, of 1790 Wisteria Dr., Apt. D., Chambersburg,
died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at 11:40 am., near his home on Wisteria
Drive, as a result of an accident. Born Nov. 20, 1929, in Mount Union,
he was the son of the late George and Mary (Fields) Welliver. He is
survived by a sister, Gail Lightner of Marysville, and several nieces
and nephews. His fiancee, Constance H. Cannon of Chamhersbttrg,
survives. Three brothers and a sister preceded him in death. A 1947
graduate of Mount Union High School, he worked as a chemistry clerk at
Shippensburg University for 20 years. During the Korean War, he served
in the U.S. Army as a medcal technician. Mr. Welliver was a charter
member of the Roxbury Lions Club in Roxbury and was a member and past
master of Orrstown Lodge No. 262, F&AM. He enjoyed traveling and was an
avid sports fan. There will he no funeral services and interment will he
private.

Lois E. STEWART, 88. formerly of Crawford Apartments, Huntingdon died
Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at 5 am., at Huntingdon Manor, Huntingdon. Born
Dec. 3, 1912, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Harry and
Nettie (Henton) Eckenroth. She married Warren K. Stewart June 20, 1954,
at the Abbey Reformed Church in Huntingdon. Mr. Stewart preceded her in
death Nov. 26, 1981. Surviving are a daughter, Donna F. Varner of
Waynesboro, one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren. She was the
last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Stewart was a member
of the Fifteenth Street United Methodist Church, Huntingdon. She was
employed by J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1975, with 18
years of service in the kitchen and five years in the laundry. Graveside
services will be held Friday, June 22, at 3 p.m., at the Alexandria
Presbyterian Cemetery, with the Rev. David L. Dearing officiating. 

Phyllis G. JACKSON, 93, of 930 Washington Street, Huntingdon, died at
6:35 p.m., Thursday, June 21, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital. Her
death was unexpected. She was born April 10, 1908, in Huntingdon, the
daughter of the late Ross and Elsie (Smearman) Guisler. She married
Robert H. Jackson Nov. 15, 1940, at the St. lames Lutheran Church,
Huntingdon, with Rev. Edmund Manges officiating. She was preceded in
death by her husband Aug. 27, 1991. She is survived by a sister, Anna
Mae Strickler of Huntingdon, a brother, J. Donald Guisler of Huntingdon,
and by 12 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother,
William "Wid’ Guisler, and a sister, Jean Martin. Mrs. Jackson was a
member of the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church and a life long resident of
the borough. She attended Huntingdon public schools and graduated from
Huntingdon High School in 1926. She was employed by J.C. Blair Company,
later the Mead Corporation, retiring in 1972 as a secretary with over 40
years of service. She was a former charter member of the Diamond Valley
Social Club and former member of the Huntingdon Country Club. She
resided at her Washington Street home since 1961. A funeral service will
be held at 11 am., Monday, June 25, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home,
417 Washington Street, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Leslie R. F. Papp
officiating. Interment will be made at the Philipsburg Cemetery,
Philipsburg. 

Elsie M. McCARTY, 92, of Newark, Del., died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at
Bishop McCarthy Residence in Vineland. N.J. Born in Everett, she was the
daughter of the late Joseph and Myrtle (Boser) Sparks. She married
Rolland T. McCarty, who preceded her in death. Surviving are two
sisters: Mary Shingler of Huntingdon and Velma Donalson of Saxton. There
are four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Two sons, R.
William McCarty and Gary McCarty, preceded her in death. She was a
member of the Bethel Church of the Brethren in Everett. She had been a
resident of Newark, Del., and had resided in New Jersey for the past
year. Funeral services will be held at the Bethel Church of the
Brethren, 361 Plank Rd., Everett, Monday, June 25, at 11 am. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery. 

Eugene F. SCANLON, 75, of James Creek, formerly of Indiana, died
Thursday, June 21, 2001. at St. Andrews Village. Born Sept.22, 1925, in
Bessamar Terrace, he was the son of the late Eugene and Catherine
(Klages) Scanlon. He married Shirley Hoover in 1950. Mrs. Scanlon
survives at home, along with two sons and a daughter: Patrick Scanlon of
Penn Run, Timothy Scanlon of New Cumberland and Suzanne Scanlon of
Blairs Mills. There are four grandchildren. Also surviving are two
brothers and four sisters: Robert Scanlon of Paradise, Richard Scanlon
of New Brighton, Anna Margaret Kehoe of North Huntington, Katherine
Ackerman of Pittsburgh, Sarah Jane Speece of North Huntington and Evelyn
Thiem of West Muffin. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael F.
Scanlon in 1989, and a granddaughter, Kalynne Scanlon in 1986. Mr.
Scanlon received his bachelor’s degree in education from Duquesne
University and his master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He
received his doctorate degree in education from Penn State University.
He began teaching in 1965, at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and
retired in 1987 as chairman of special education and clinical services
department. After his retirement, Mr. Scanlon and his wife moved to
James Creek and he served as Lincoln Township supervisor for two terms
from 1990 until 1998. During World War II, Mr. Scanlon served in the
Merchant Marines. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 24, at
noon, at the C. Frederick Bowser Funeral Home, Homer City. Interment
will be made in the Greenwood Cemetery. 

Mildred J. SHAEFER, 73, of 34 Fish Hatchery Road, North Newton Township,
Newville, died Thursday June 21, 2001, at her home. She was born Oct. 6,
1927, in Black Log Valley, Juniata County, the daughter of the late
Walter and Sadie (Bilger) Vaughan. She is survived by her husband, Harry
W. Shaefer; a son, Harold P. Covert of Chambersburg and by a daughter,
Nancy L. Varner of Huntingdon. She is also survived by two brothers,
Raymond Vaughan of Mill Creek and Jack Vaughan of McSherrystown; a
sister, Dorothy Covert of Shade Gap; four grandchildren and one
great-grandson. She was preceded in death by four brothers: Homer
Vaughan, Melvin Vaughan, Henry Vaughan and Paul Vaughan, and by two
sisters, Genevieve Vaughan and Mary Welliver. Mrs. Shaefer was a member
of the Assembly of God Church, Shippensburg. She was formerly employed
by the L. Greif and Brothers Manufacturing Co. in Mount Union as a
seamstress and had resided in the Newville and Shippensburg areas for
the past 23 years. A funeral service will be held Sunday. June 24 at 2
p.m., at the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 South Hanover Street,
Carlisle, with the Rev. Lester Martin officiating. Interment will be
made at the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Tuesday, June 26, at 11
a.m. 

Elizabeth Sarah STALLINGS, 87, of Columbus, Ohio, died Tuesday, June 19,
2001, at St. Rita’s Home. She was the daughter of the late John and
Delilah Prendergast and the widow of Fred Stallings. She is survived by
sons Mike Stallings, John Stallings and Dave Stallings, and a daughter,
Mrs. Joe (Cindy) Caldwell. There are ten grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Richard Prendergast,
and sisters Delilah Walker and Patricia Shuck, all of Huntingdon. She
was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters: James
Prendergast, Benjamin Prendergast, John Prendergast, George Prendegast,
Anna Mary Guisler and Virginia McIlroy. Mrs. Stallings was a registered
nurse and a former Red Cross volunteer. Funeral services were held June
25, at St. Rita’s Home, 880 Greenlawn Ave., Columbus. Ohio. 

Joanne M. SMITH, 49, of 4501 E. Main St., Belleville, died at 10:40 am.
Saturday, June 23, 2001, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born
April 13, 1952, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of Sarah C.
(Traxler) Smith of 210 Second St., Belleville, and the late George
Smith. She is survived by a sister and three brothers: Jeanne M. Seidel,
Thomasville; Ray M. Smith, Mill Creek; Glenn M. Smith. Belleville; and
Dale T. Smith, Hesston. Four nieces, two nephews, one grandniece and
four grand-nephews survive. Ms. Smith was a 1970 graduate of Huntingdon
Area High School and the Juniata-Mifflin Counties Area
Vocational-Technical School, Lewistown. She was employed as an LPN at
Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. She was a member of the Allensville
Presbyterian Church and had been active in 4-H during her teen years.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am. Tuesday, June 26, at the Baggus
Funeral Home, 3813 W. Main St., Belleville, with the Rev. Geoffrey A.
Huish and the Rev. Paul Bender officiating. Interment will be made in
the Allensville Presbyterian Cemetery. 

Ruth H. CRAIG, 86, of 2301 Maclay Ave., Huntingdon, died Sunday, June
24, 2001, at her daughters residence at 7936 Umberger Rd., West Hanover
Township, Harrisburg, Dauphin County. Born Jan. 17, 1915, in Juniata
Township, Huntingdon County, she was the daughter of the late Carl B.
and Clara E. (Ronk) Hall. She married Ernest Austin Craig Oct. 16, 1946,
at the Methodist Church Parsonage, Ebensburg, with the Rev. R.C. McMinn
officiating. Mr. Craig preceded her in death June 3,1968. Surviving are
two daughters: Mrs. George (Caryl M.) Wolfe, Oneida Township,
Huntingdon; and Mrs. Donovan (Karen C.) Wolfe, West Hanover Township,
Harrisburg. There are two grandchildren, a niece and a nephew. One
brother, James A. Hall of Huntingdon, RD. 1, survives. Mrs. Craig was 
preceded in death by a first cousin, Merle Blain Henry. who was reared in 
the home as a brother. He died Jan. 17, 2000. Mrs. Craig was a
member of the McConnellstown United Methodist Church, where she was a
member and past treasurer of the United Methodist Women and member and
teacher of the Friendship Class of the church. She was also a past
member of the Woodcock Valley Homemakers and volunteered at Epworth
Manor, Tyrone. She attended the Juniata Township public schools and was
a 1932 graduate of Huntingdon High School. She had been employed in
retail sales in Huntingdon for over 40 years with W.T. Grant’s, Caplans,
Ames, and she retired from Savadow’s in 1990. A resident of Huntingdon
County since birth, she had lived at her current residence for 44 years.
She enjoyed needlecrafts and traveling. A funeral service will be held
at the McConnellstown United Methodist Church, Ward Street,
McConnellstown, Thursday, June 28, at 11 am., with the Rev. Dr. Ruth Ann
Campagna officiating. Interment will be made in the Huntingdon Memorial
Gardens, Walker Township. 

Robert F. SCHANDELMEIER, 65, of 2582 Brick Church Rd., Cochranton, died
Saturday, June 16, 2001, at UPMC Horizon in Greenville, following an
extended illness. Born June 2,1936, in Altoona, he was the son of the
late Charles and Catherine (Van Coor) Schandelmeier. He married Nancy L.
Titus May 25, 1968. She survives at home. His first wife, Peggy Ann
Coble, survives in Altoona. In addition to his wife, he is survived by
the following children: Mrs. Nick (Peggy Jo Schandelmeier) Norris,
Altoona; Robert Schandelmeier. Michigan; Stephen Schandelmeier, Dennis
Schandelmeier and Andy Schandelmeier, all of Altoona; Kelly Alter,
Cochranton and Tammy Barr, Conneautville. Also surviving are six
brothers and two sisters: Harold Schandelmeier, Alder, Mont.; Melvin
Schandelmeier, Alexandria; William Schandelmeier, Ormond Beach, Fla.;
Jack Schandelmeier, Tampa, Fla.; Don Schandelmeier, Prescott; Becky
Eaken, Huntingdon; and Lola Eaken, Tyrone. He was preceded in death by
three brothers: Earl Schandelmeier, Charles Schandelmeier and Cecil
Schandelmeier. A graduate of Tyrone High School, Mr. Schandelmeier
worked as a truck driver, blacksmith and farmer. During the Korean
Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of APHA and AQHA. 

Harry Mosser SHAW Sr., 81, of Sugar Maple Lane, Harrisonville, died at
10:28 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2001, at the Fulton County Medical Center,
McConnellsburg. Born Nov. 25, 1919, in McConnellsburg, he was the son of
the late Harry and Blanche (Mellott) Shaw. He married LaRue Berkstresser
Aug. 24, 1944. Mrs. Shaw survives at home, alonsg with a son, Harry M.
Shaw Jr. of Weatherford. Okla., two grandsons and four
great-grandchildren. One son, Daniel Lee Shaw, died June 24, 1954. A
sister, Estalene Morgan of Kissimee, Fla,, survives. He was preceded in
death by a brother, George W. Shaw, who died during World War II. Mr.
Shaw was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church, North Hess
Road, Harrisonville, where he served as a Sunday School superintendent
since 1976. He was also church treasurer, trustee, choir member, Sunday
School teacher and he conducted Bible study. He retired in 1975 from
Exxon Corp., after 35 years of service. He was a senior manager at Cove
Valley and Sideling Hill Plaza on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. After
retirement, Mr. Shaw kept active with accounting and preparing income
taxes. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am. Thursday, June 28, at
the Fairview United Methodist Church, North Hess Road. Harrisonville,
with Pastor Brian Sweeney officiating. Interment will be made in
Fairview Cemetery. 

Louise Aiken HILDEBRAND, formerly of 901 W. Floral Dr., Tyrone, and a
resident of the Presbyterian Home, Hollidaysburg, since Feb. 11, 1999,
died at the home at 5:15 am. Monday. June 25, 2001. Born at Milesburg,
she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Clara Belle (Aiken)
Holt. She married Vance C. Hildebrand Jan. 29, 1942, who preceded her in
death March 22, 1979. One daughter. Vana G. Levy of Alexandria survives,
along with three grandchildren. One grandson is deceased. One brother
and one sister also survive: Kenneth Holt of Media and Dorothy O’Rourke
of Tyrone. She was preceded in death by a brother, Carl. Mrs. Hildebrand
was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Tyrone. A 1929 graduate
of Tyrone High School, she had been employed as a secretary and
bookkeeper for Waple’s Dairy and Haggs Dairy in Tyrone for many years.
She was a member of the former Tyrone Garden Club and was an avid
painter using oils and watercolors. She received many awards for her
works. Mrs. Hildebrand was also a homemaker and enjoyed birdwatching.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 27. at 11 am., at the
Derman Funeral Home. Inc., Tyrone, with the Rev. Robert E. Dunkelberger
officiating. Interment will be made in the Eastlawn Cemetery, Snyder
Township.

Dr Presley U. CRUMMY, 94, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Manchester
Presbyterian Home, Erie, where he had resided since 1993. Born Oct. 1,
1906, in Glade Mills, Butler County. he was the son of the late William
and Rachel (Mowery) Crummy. He married Lucille Beck June 19, 1934, in
Indiana. Mrs. Crummy preceded him in death Sept. 21, 1998. The couple
had no children. Three nephews and two nieces survive. Dr. Crummy
received a bachelor of science degree with honors from Grove City
College in 1929. In 1932, he received his master’s of science degree and
in 1934, a Ph.D., both from the University of Pittsburgh. From 1935
until 1949, he was an instructor and assistant professor of biology at
Juniata College. During his 14 years at Juniata, Dr. Crummy also served
as registrar of the college, was secretary of the faculty and also
director of the summer term. During the summers of 1952-1957, he was
instructor of anatomy and physiology at Penn State University. In 1949,
he became assistant professor of anatomy at Kirksville College of
Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville, Mo. He later became full professor of
anatomy. He retired in 1976. but continued to serve part-time until
1991. Dr. Crummy was the author of a textbook, "An Outline of
Microscopic Anatomy." He also contributed research papers to several
professional journals. He was a member of various honorary and
professional organizations in the scientific community. While in
Huntingdon, Dr. and Mrs. Crummy were active members of the Huntingdon
Presbyterian Church, where Dr. Crummy was an elder. He was an active
member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kirskville, Mo., where he
also served as an elder. He was also chairman of ministerial relations
committee of the Kirksville Presbytery from 1960 until 1966 and he was
a member of the General Council of the Synod of Missouri from 1967
until 1970. Dr. Crummy served as presiding officer of the Yorkrite
Masonic organizations in Kirksville, Mo. In 1969. he was made a Knight
of the York Cross of Honor. In 19?4, he served as grand commander of the
Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of the State of Missouri. Interment
was made in Kirksville, Mo. 

Kenneth L. "Shag" SMITH, 54, of HCI, Robertsdale, died at 1:28
p.m. Monday, June 25, 2001, at the Altoona Hospital, Altoona. Born Nov.
7, 1946, in Six Mile Run, he was the son of the late Melvin Smith and
Grace (Evans) Smith, who survives in Six Mile Run. He married Mary Wible
April 10, 1971. in Saltillo. In addition to his wife and mother, he is
survived by a son and a daughter: Brian L. Smith of Three Springs and
Tina M. Smith, Robertsdale. There are three grandchildren. Also
surviving are the following siblings: Twilla Mae Frew, Eclair, Md.;
Warren Smith, James Creek; Carol Zimmerman, Hopewell; Victor Smith,
Claysburg; Janice Cabot, Jeffersonton, Va.; Wilma Lee Taunton. Danville,
Ala.; Don Smith, Hopewell; Bob Smith, Hopewell; Rhonda Smith, Six Mile
Run; Velma Swope, Six Mile Run; Cindy Stough, Riddlesburg; Tim Smith,
Saxton. One brother, Ray, preceded him in death. Mr. Smith was a member
of the Finleyville Union Church. He was employed as a laborer at Hempt
Brothers and enjoyed hunting and working on cars. Funeral services will
be held at 11 am. Friday, June 29, at Finleyville Union Church, with
Pastor Marion Foor and Pastor David Sproull officiating. Interment will
be made in the Evans Cemetery, Six Mile Run.

Mae F. YINGLING, 88, a resident of Woodland Retirement Center,
Orbisonia, formerly of Altoona, died at 11:10 am. Tuesday, June 26,
2001, at the retirement center. Born April 29, 1913, in Catharine
Township, Blair County, she was the daughter of the late William
Harrison and Annie Jane (Ross) Manning. She was first married to
Thomas E. Shade. She later married Marion W. Yingling, who preceded her
in death in November 1977. Surviving are two children: Betty Miller of
HCR 75. Shade Gap, and Thomas Shade of Columbus, Ohio. There are nine
grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren. Three sisters survive: Thelma Neeley,
Huntsville, Ala.; Alice Wray, Mifflintown; and Inez Detwiler,
Williamsburg. In her earlier years, Mrs. Yingling had worked at the
Valley View Nursing Home, Altoona. Funeral services will be held at 11
am. Friday, June 29, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia,
with the Rev. Belvy C. White officiating. Interment will be made in the
Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood.

James H. Scott Jr., 54, of Bensalem, died June 24, 2001, at his home,
after a lengthy illness. Born March 31, 1947, in San Bernadino, Calif.,
he was the son of Janet (Metz) Biggs. His stepfather was the late Paul
L. Biggs Sr. He is survived by his sister, Mary Scott of Bensalem, a
brother, Paul L. Biggs Jr. of North Carolina, and a nephew. Mr. Scott’s
family, the Metz’s, are from Huntingdon and still reside here. He was a
member of the Class of 1965 at Bensalem High School and graduated from
Drexel University. Funeral services and interment were private.

Marjorie A. (Swope) EBERMAN, 69,of North Huntingdon, died May 21, 2001,
in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born Dec. 16,
1931, in Mount Union, the daughter of Fannie (Naugle) Swope of
Wilkinsburg and the late John Swope. In addition to her mother, she is
survived by her husband, George J. "Jack" Eberman; two daughters, Kim
Eberman of North Huntingdon and Jackie Murcek of Manor; and a son, Woody
Eberman of Twinsburg, Ohio, There are six grandchildren. In addition to
her father, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori Eberman and
son, William Eberman. Also surviving is a brother, William Swope of
North Huntingdon; a sister, Josephine Gallaher of Delmont; an aunt and
uncle and a number of nieces and nephews in the Mount Union area. She
was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Irwin.
Services were held May 23 in Irwin. Interment followed in Irwin Union
Cemetery, North Huntingdon.

Lt. CoI. (Ret.) Timothy Boyd WEYANDT, MD, MPH, FACOEM, 54, of Crestwood
Dr., RD. 1, Box 387 D., Juniata Township, Huntingdon, died Tuesday, June
26, 2001, at 3:39 pm.. in Catharine Township, Blair County. Born July
16, 1946, in Roaring Spring, he was the son of Melvin Boyd and Lois
(Bruckman) Weyandt who survive in Huntingdon. He married Mary Barbara
Beeker June 29, 1990, in Bel Air, Md. Mrs. Weyandt survives at their
Juniata Township residence. Also surviving are three daughters and a
son: Paula Sierant, Montana; Dawn Petty, Kansas; Tamara Ryon, Bel Air,
Md.; and Timothy Weyandt II, also of Bel Air, Md. There are five
grandchildren. Two sisters survive: Mrs. John (Miriam) Thomas, State
College; and Patricia Echard, McVeytown. Dr. Weyandt served for 20 years
with the United States Army in occupational medicine. He retired from
the army in 1992. He was a licensed physician with full residency
training and board certifications in both pediatric medicine and
environmental medicine. He had been awarded the status of fellow, the
highest degree of professional recognition, by the American College of
Occupational and Environmental Medicine. A career in military medicine
afforded opportunities to develop expertise in health hazard and risk
assessment, industrial toxicology, chemical casualty management and
reproductive toxicology. After his retirement from the army, he served
as director of occupational medicine and professor of industrial safety
and health at Penn State University, before becoming a full-time private
consultant in occupational and environmental medicine. Dr. Weyandt had
been currently serving as director of occupational medicine programs for
the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), a Fortune 500
company. He had resided at his Juniata Township home since March 1993,
after moving from Bel Air, Md. Dr. Weyandt attended the Christian
Assembly in Huntingdon. Interment will be private.

Robert Elvin HINKLE, 62, of Killeen, Texas, died June 27, 2001, at his
residence. Born Nov. 3, 1938, in Huntingdon, he was the son of the late
Elvin C. Hinkle and Susan P Hinkle, who survives in Saxton. He married
the former Carol E. Ronk May 10, 1961, in Hesston. Mrs. Hinkle survives
at home, along with two children: Robert E. Hinkle II of Temple, Texas,
and Roberta E. Perdue of Anaheim, Calif. There are five grandchildren.
Also surviving are the following siblings: Clair D. Hinkle, Somerset;
Fredrick D. Hinkle, Hopewell; Barry L. Hinkle, Saxton; Doris E. Spencer.
Primeville, Ore.; Patsy A. Barnett, Huntingdon; Shelby J. Sweeney.
Everett; and Darlene S. Notestine. Saxton. One sister is deceased.
Reared in Saxton, he was a graduate of Saxton-Liberty High School in
Saxton. He was employed by Littlon PRC Contractors, Ft. Hood, Texas,
until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, including
during the Vietnam War, receiving an honorable discharge as a sergeant
first class. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal,
Vietnam Service Medal with one Silver Service Star, Republic of Vietnam
Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal with Bronze
Clasp and Five Loops, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NCO
Professional Development Ribbon No. 3; Sharpster Rifle M-1, Driver Badge
with Bar and Mechanic Badge with Bar. Mr. Hinkle was a member of the DAV
Post No. 29; life member of the American Legion and life member of the
VFW in Killeen, Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 30, at 4
p.m., at the Crawford-Bowers Chapel, Killeen, Texas, with the Rev.
Rodney Kruse officiating. Interment will be made in the Killeen Memorial
Park Cemetery.

Irvin H. QUERRY, 83, of Mapleton, RD. 1, died at 3:30 am. Thursday, June
28, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born Jan. 5,
1918, in Union Township, Huntingdon County, he was the son of the late
Gilbert and Bertha (Dell) Querry. He married Madeline Crotsley July 29,
1941. Mrs. Querry survives at home, along with a son, Danny Querry of
Belpre, Ohio. Two brothers and a sister are daceased. Mr. Querry was a
member of the Beech Run Church of the Brethren, Mapleton, R.D. In his
earlier years, he had worked as a farmer and at the brick-yard in Mount
Union. He retired in 1984. after 26 1/2 years as a rural mail carrier. A
veteran of World War II, he served with the US Army Fifth Infantry in
Europe. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was a Bronze Star
recipient. He was a lifetime member of the Mapleton American Legion Post
No. 322. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 2, at the
Beech Run Church of the Brethren, Mapleton, with Pastor Connie Maclay
officiating. Interment will be made in the Bowman’s Chapel Cemetery,

Edna F. (Roland) JAMISON, 86, of Manor Care, Carlisle, formerly of
Mapleton, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Manor Care. Born June 19,
1915. in Trough Creek Valley, she was the daughter of the late Dorsey
and Grace (Hoover) Roland. She married Luther N. Jamison, who preceded
her in death. Surviving are two sons and a daughter: Fred Albert Jamison
of Saltillo, Kennie Meryl Jamison of Carlisle and Marilee Himes of
Mapleton. There are 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, six
great-great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by a son, Donald Eugene Jamison. One brother and three sisters
survive: Dorsey Roland of Duncannon, Myrtle Romig of Mount Union,
Monetta Kline of Duncannon and Verna Russler of Huntingdon. One brother
and five sisters are deceased. Mrs. Jamison was a member of the Brethren
in Christ Church, Mapleton. She was a former presser at the Grief
Brothers Manufacturing Co. She retired from the M&M Restaurant in
Huntingdon. Mrs. Jamison was an auxiliary member of the Mapleton
American Legion. Graveside services will be held Monday, July 2, at 1
p.m., at the Bowman Chapel Cemetery, Mapleton. 

Frank A. SCHENCK, 85. a resident of the Morrisons Cove Home,
Martinshurg, formerly of Saxton and Wells Tannery, died Saturday, June
30, 2001, at 1:30 p.m., at the home, following an extended illness. Born
Sept. 2, 1915. in Wells Township, Fulton County, he was the son of the
late Charles Leslie and Rebecca June (Foster) Schenck. He married Evelyn
Schwartz Oct. 12, 1940. Mrs. Schenck preceded him in death Oct. 29,
1989. Surviving are a daughter. Mrs. Fred (Joyce F.) Donelson of Saxton,
along with six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by two sons; F. Wayne Schenck and Robert F. Schenck
Sr. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was preceded
in death by three sisters and two brothers: Lena Chamberlain, Ruth
Newman Wible, Inez Schenck, Gervaise Schenck and Charles Bruce Schenck.
Mr. Schenck attended the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Wells
Tannery. A 1934 graduate of Hustontown High School, he was a school bus
driver in Fultun County and for CC Camp, also in Fulton County. From
1953, he worked as a mechanic at Sam Garner Motors in Saxton. He retired
in 1985 from Stoudnour Chevrolet as a mechanic. After retirement, he
enjoyed gardening. Funeral services will he held Tuesday, July 3, at 11
am., at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with the Rev. Gary
Schwartz officiating. Interment will he made in the EUB Church Cemetery,
Wells Tannery. 

William Fern Thompson, 75, of R.D 3. Box 134 A, Huntingdon. died Friday,
June 29, 2001, at 7:05 p m . at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon. Born Aug. 24, 1925, in Huntingdon, he was the son of the
late William C. and Eva (Stone) Thompson. He married Vera M. Madden Aug.
14, 1943, in Huntingdon. Mrs. Thompson survives at home, along with the
following children: Ernest W. Thompson and Ralph F. Thompson, both of
Huntingdon, R.D. 3: Darlene V. Prough, Huntingdon: Alvina M. Opie,
Huntingdon, R.D. 4; and Gregory R Thompson, Huntingdon. R.D. 3. There
are 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are the
following brothers and sisters Thomas "Sandy" Thompson and Chester
Thompson, both of Mill Creek: George Thompson, Elmer "Jay" Thompson and
Cindy Carolus, all of Huntingdon, R.D. 3; Sue Houck, Huntingdon: and
Elenor Gardner, .Shippensburg. He was preceded in death by a sister, Eva
Thompson, and a brother, Tracy Thompson. Mr. Thompson was a member of
the Oasis of Love Church, Huntingdon. He also belonged to the Loyal
Order of the Moose Lodge 223; Standing Stone Post 1754 VFW, and Frank P.
Hommon Post 24, American Legion, all of Huntingdon. He was employed as a
cement finisher for Paul Hickes Construction, retiring in 1988 with over
30 years of service. During World War II, he served in the US Army as a
sergeant with the 359th Infantry Regiment at the battles of Normandy,
Northern France, Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe. He was
awarded the Silver Star and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign
Medal with five Bronze Stars. Funeral services will he held Tuesday,
July 3, at 2 p.m., at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home Huntingdon, with
Pastor Myrna Speck officiating. Interment will be made in the Huntingdon
Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon. RD. 1.
