Florence R. Merrill of 1736 Brushy Ridge Road, Montoursville, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in Valley View Nursing Home. Arrangements are being handled by Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville.

Betty M. Mosso
Betty M. Mosso, 74, of 204 Grand St., Danville, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. She was a city native. She retired from Geisinger and had previously worked for Knobel’s Amusement Resort in Elysburg. She was a member of Elysburg Presbyterian Church. Born June 8, 1925, she was a daughter of Harry and Lydia Schreiber Hill. Surviving are a son, Russell E. of Danville; a daughter, Bethann L. Kuntz of Butler; a sister, Dottie Karschner of Montoursville; and three grandchildren, Lauren, Traci and Hannah Kuntz. A memorial service will be at noon Wednesday at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, with the Rev. Donald E. Yorks, of Fairfield United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers.

Franklin J. Schaad Jr.
MILDRED — Franklin J. Schaad Jr., 76, of Jackson Street, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and a part time resident of Largo, Fla. He and his wife, the former Marcella Steafather Schaad, observed their 48th wedding anniversary June 23. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a scout in the 88th Cavalry Recon 8th Armored Division Troop B, and served in the Rhineland Ardennes Central Europe where he received the bronze star medal, European African and Middle Eastern Campaign medal with three bronze stars and the good conduct medal. He was a member of McDermott Post 452 American Legion, Mildred, the A.J. Bird Post 384, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Overton, the Eighth Armored Division Association, White Ash Land Association and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a former member of the Dushore Lions Club, the Mildred Fire Company and Ambulance Association and the Elks Lodge in Towanda. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing. Born here Dec. 18, 1923, he was a son of Franklin and Edna Thayer Schaad. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Daniel of Mildred; a daughter, Susan Soden of Columbia; a sister, Dolores Beauchamp of Adelphia, Md.; and five grandchildren, Vincent and Justin Soden and Danielle, Corey and Kyle. He was preceded in death by a brother, William. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Michael Harris officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends may call at McHenry’s, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. A Legion service will be at 7:30 and a vigil will follow at 8:30. A prayer service will be at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Frances J. Stanzione
Frances J. Stanzione, 86, a resident of Sycamore Manor Care since May 1996, previously of Chestnut Street, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000. Her husband, Louis Stanzione, died May 1, 1994. She had been employed by Bell Telephone prior to her marriage. She was a member of St. Boniface Church. She graduated from Kellysburg School. Born April 1, 1913, in Cascade, she was a daughter of Joseph and Mary Ging Leonard. Surviving are a son, Michael of this city; two daughters, Mary Loretta of Lock Haven and Bernadette Deitrick of this city; and two grandchildren, Matthew and Micah. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis and Joseph Leonard and five sisters, Ida Naughton, Jean Holcomb, Margaret Herman, Nellie Marzlin and Florence Skehan. A funeral Mass will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday at the church, 326 Washington Blvd. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday. Arrangements are being handled by Allen and Redmond’s, 331 Elmira St.

Rhonda Fye Wellar
HOWARD — Rhonda “Weasy” Fye Wellar, 40, of Howard, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at her home. Her second husband, Michael J. Wellar, died Feb. 26. She was employed at Howard Nursery. She had previously worked for Health South Rehabilitation and Corning-Asaiu. She was a member of the Bellefonte Veterans of Foreign Wars Women’s Auxiliary and the Milesburg American Legion. She was a Protestant. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, landscaping, spending time outdoors and swimming. She was born Aug. 29, 1959, in Lock Haven. Surviving are her first husband, Douglas S. Mann of Clarence;her parents and step-parents, Charles S. and Millie J. DeHaas of Howard and Ronald B. and Carol D. Fye of Lock Haven; a daughter, Heidi Kay Mann at home; a stepdaughter, Kristin Wellar of Wingate; a son, Zachary Scott Soyers, at home; a stepson, Jimmie Wellar in Wingate; four sisters, Robin F. Lyons of Howard, Roxanne L. Shceffler and Rochelle “Shelly” DeHaas, both of Bellefonte and Ranae L. Watts of DuBoistown; and two brothers, Ronald J. Fye of Duluth, Minn. and Patrick M. DeHaas of Lock Haven. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Neff’s, 837 Main St., with Robert Cauffman officiating. Burial will be in Eagle Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

WOOLRICH — A memorial service will be Saturday for Catherine Rich Brayton, 81, of Fall River, Mass., formerly of here, who died Saturday, April 22, 2000. The service will be at 10:30 a.m. at First Congregational Church, Rock Street, Fall River. A gathering of friends will follow at the home of her son, Roswell Brayton Jr., 176 Atlantic Ave., Westport, Mass.

Grace E. Chestnut
Grace E. Chestnut, 91, of Marion, Ill., formerly of this city, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Shawnee Christian Nursing Home there. She had worked for Lycoming College. She was a member of Celestia Rebekah Lodge 80, Muncy, and The Lady Langdon Rebekah Lodge 528, Roaring Branch. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Born June 12, 1908, in Lycoming County, she was a daughter of Durbin and Ada Blaker Chestnut. Surviving are a brother, Durbin of Trout Run; a niece and nephew, Mickey and Tom Ward, with whom she lived in Illinois,; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, James, and two sisters, Alice McErn and Ruth Walters. A graveside service will be at 9 a.m. today at Montoursville Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. John F. Piper, her pastor, officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville.

MORRIS — Timothy J. Erb, 43, of Morris died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at Chalfont, Bucks County. He and his wife, the former Linda M. Briggs, were married in 1995. He was an independent contractor in home building and repair. He formerly owned a taxidermy business in Morris. He was a member of the Arnot Sportsman Club, Liberty Veterans of Foreign Wars, Morris Rod and Gun Club, and Anna S. Hunting Club. He was a hunting guide. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Morris. Born May 18, 1957, in Bristol, he was a son of Clarence J. and Lillian J. Dowling Erb. Surviving, besides his wife, are his mother and stepfather, Lillian J. and Roland VanCampen of Morris; a stepson, Robert Harper of Wellsboro; five brothers, Ronald J. of Reiglesville, Kenneth J. of Bensalem, Daniel J. and Russell J., both of Croydon, and Stephen J. of Morris; a stepbrother, Hank White of Washingtonville; and three sisters, Kathleen J. of Wellsboro, Barbara J. Alexander and Thereasa J. Miller, both of Morris. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 38 Central Ave., Wellsboro, with the Rev. Michael J. Dr. Edward Hoberman
JERSEY SHORE — Dr. Edward Hoberman, 92, of 131 S. Fairview St. died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Lock Haven Hospital Extended Care Unit following an illness. He was the widower of the former Ethel Rosner and the former Ethel Miller. He was chief of surgery at Lock Haven Hospital for a number of years beginning in 1936. He received degrees from Cook County Hospital in Chicago; Mercy Hospital, Altoona; Jefferson Medical School and Dickinson College. He was a member of Dickinson and Jefferson Alumni Associations. He was on the board of the Clinton County Medical Society and Clinton County Community Nursing and was past president of the Lock Haven University board and Lock Haven Kiwanis Club. He was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose, LaFayette Lodge 199 F&AM and Brotherhood of the Protective Order of Elks, all in Lock Haven. He was a member of Coudersport Consistory and the Jaffa Shrine, Altoona. He was a member of Beth Yehuda Synagogue. Born Dec. 9, 1907, at Lock Haven, he was a son of Benjamin and Molly Zimmerman Hoberman. Surviving are a son, Alfred E. of Lock Haven; four daughters, Sonia Hoffman of Las Vegas, Nev., Susan Doberstein and Barbara, both of Lock Haven, and Shelah Luber of Coral Springs, Fla.; a sister, Blanche Crane of Philadelphia; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ellis, and a sister, Minnie Balis. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the synagogue, 320 W. Church St., Lock Haven, with Rabbi Sharon Litwin officiating. Burial will be in Beth Yehuda Cemetery, Allison Township, Clinton County. Friends may call at Yost-Gedon’s, 121 W. Main St., Lock Haven, from 7 to 9 tonight and at the synagogue from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday. The family will provide the flowers.

Anthony Calagna
ALLENWOOD — A 61-year-old inmate at the low-security prison camp here died Monday. Anthony Calagna died at 11:55 a.m. from an apparent cardiac arrest at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, according to prison officials. Autopsy results are pending. Calagna was sentenced in the Eastern District of New York on April 12, 1991, to a 10-year, eight-month term for extortion conspiracy and racketeering offenses. He was scheduled for release on Oct. 15, officials said.

Herbert H. Justice Jr.
Herbert H. Justice Jr., 68, of Winooski, Vt., a city native, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at home. His wife, the former Jean Shnyder, died Dec. 19, 1954. He had worked for Parke Davis Pharmaceuticals, Ayerst Laboratories and American Rescue Workers. He was a graduate of Montoursville High School and Lycoming College. Born Jan. 19, 1932, he was a son of Herbert and Ruth Donovan Justice Sr. Surviving are two sons, Gregory of Aurora, Colo., and Rick of Corona, Calif.; three daughters, Mary McLaren of Port Hope, Ontario, Canada, Barbara Flint, Burlington, Vt., and Peg Smith of Cobourg, Ontario, Canada; a sister, Elaine Miller of this city; a brother, Malcolm of Tunkhannock; and 10 grandchildren. Burial and services were in St. Albans, Vt.

Lotti M. Marvin
BLOSSBURG — Lotti M. Marvin, 74, of Blossburg died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Broad Acres Nursing Home, Wellsboro. Her husband, Edward Marvin, died Sept. 19, 1994. She was a dietary aide at the former Blossburg State Hospital until its closure in 1972. She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church. Born here Aug. 12, 1925, she was a daughter of Andrew and Cecelia Zodrynski Jankowiak. Surviving are two sisters, Irene and Violet Jankowiak, both of Blossburg. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Zwicharowski’s, 314 Granger St., with her pastor, the Rev. Kenneth Seegar, officiating. Burial will be in St. Andrew Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday.

Philip Samuel Seitzer
JERSEY SHORE — Philip Samuel Seitzer, 93, of Vero Beach, Fla., a borough native, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at his home. He was a physical education teacher and track coach at Columbia High School in the Maplewood-South Orange, N.J., school system for 25 years, retiring in 1970. He was a member of the Audubon Society of Indian River County, Exchange Club of Vero Beach, Vero Beach Theatre Guild and yacht club. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was a member of Christ-by-the-Sea United Methodist Church, Vero Beach. He was a 1932 graduate of Springfield College, Springfield, Mass. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Gladys of Vero Beach; four nieces; and a nephew. A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Rest Haven Memorial Park, Lock Haven RR 1. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Rearick-Carpenter’s, 1002 Allegheny St.

Donald J. Starkweather
WELLSBORO — Donald J. Starkweather, 65, of Wellsboro RR 7 died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. He and his wife, the former M. Marguerite Nickerson, observed their 31st wedding anniversary Jan. 18. He was retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. An Air Force veteran, he served from 1954 to 1958 in the South Pacific. He was of the Methodist faith. Born Jan. 15, 1935, in Blossburg, he was a son of Hugh and Martha Luther Starkweather. Surviving, besides his wife, are a stepson, Terry Morehouse; two stepdaughters, Darlene Swain of Groton, N.Y., and Joanne Vogelsong of Bowling Green, Ohio; two brothers, Wesley of Wellsboro and Thomas of Middlebury Center; two sisters, Alice Grunhagen and Leona “Susie” Hazelton, both of Wellsboro; eight step-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., with the Rev. Fred Hickok officiating. Burial will be in Niles Valley Cemetery. Phyllis M. Vanderlin
Phyllis M. Vanderlin, 75, of 1560 Grampian Blvd. died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Williamsport Hospital after a brief illness. Her husband, O. William Vanderlin, died Jan. 7, 1999. She was a member of the Oaks, Williamsport Women’s and Williamsport Country clubs. She was a former member of Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of Olde Hickory Country Club, Fort Myers, Fla. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Born Oct. 30, 1924, in this city, she was a daughter of Benjamin and Mildred Stover Meck. Surviving are three daughters, Peggy V. McClain, Christine Z. Carlucci and Barbara J., all of this city; a son, Richard A. of this city; a sister, Betty Ertel of this city; and seven grandchildren, Robert, Richard and David McClain, Laura and Lynn Yeager, Benjamin Carlucci and Lexus Lomison. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, 102 E. Third St., with her pastor, the Rev. David L. Phillips, officiating. Entombment will be in Wildwood Cemetery.
