Iva E. Leonard
CHAMBERSBURG - Iva E. Leonard, 84, formerly of Lewistown and Traverse City, MI, and for the past several years a resident of Menno Haven Village and Nursing Home, Chambersburg, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at the nursing home. Born Sept. 13, 1917, in Horingford, she was a daughter of the late Wilber J. and Nettie (Grassmyer) Smith. Her husband, Leslie H. Leonard, preceded her in death on June 27, 2001. Surviving are: two sons, John Brady Leonard, Mancelona, MI, and James Leroy Leonard, Spring City; two brothers, Harry Smith, Mifflintown, and Richard Smith, Mattawana, and a sister, Mary Lewis, VA; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Jessie and Ruth Smith. Her funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Mattawana Mennonite Church, Mattawana, with the Rev. Leon Yoder officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Mattawana. Friends may call one hour prior to the service Friday, at the church. Max E. Lepley
LEWISTOWN - Max E. Lepley, 83, of 4109 US Highway 522 N., Lewistown, died at 2:45 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2002, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born Feb. 25, 1919, in Snyder Co., he was a son of the late Isaac W. and Lizzie (Knepp) Lepley. His wife, Dorothy (Norton) Lepley, whom he married in 1941, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. "Sonny" Forrest (Joan) Kerstetter, Milroy; a sister, Mrs. William (Vesta) Wray, Locust Grove; a granddaughter, Jennifer Lepley. He was preceded in death by a son, Max E. Lepley Jr., and a sister, Pauline Pheasant. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He worked at Avtex Fibers for 35 years before retiring in 1981. He was a member of Moose Lodge #143, Lewistown, Owls Nest, Lewistown, a life member of City Hook and Ladder Fire Co., American Legion Post #90, and Middleburg VFW Post 5640. His funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Barr Funeral Home Inc., 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Dale Hippensteel officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. Russell W. Lepley
LEWISTOWN - Russell W. Lepley, 84, of 6 Country's Edge, Lewistown died at 1:10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Valley View Retirement Community, Belleville. Born April 17, 1917 in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Charles Harman and Lucy S. (Wagner) Lepley. His wife, Virginia C. (Mellott) Rex Lepley of 6 Country's Edge, Lewistown, survives. Also surviving are: a son and daughter, Walter A. Rex, Port Royal, and Mrs. Danny (Carole) Marvonek, Interlachen, FL; a sister, Ruth E. Lepley, Malta Home, Granville; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lt. Charles Albert Lepley in 1945 and by two sisters, Alberta May Lepley in 1961 and Margaret Comer in 1994 and also by a stepmother Blanche Staford Lepley. Mr. Lepley was a 1939 graduate of Lewistown High School and was a Veteran of WW II having served in India and China in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a retired carpenter and had worked for J.M. Young and Son, Belleville, and later was a foreman for SEDA-COG weatherization for Mifflin County. He also was a technician and repairman for the Mifflin County voting machines. He was a former attendant for Fame Fire and Ambulance Company. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Lewistown, and Elks Lodge #663, Lewistown. His funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church, Lewistown, with the Rev. Dale L. Hippensteel officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery. Shirley L. Lepley
BEAVER SPRINGS - Shirley L. Lepley, 79, of Beaver Springs, formerly of McClure, passed away at 12:05 a.m. Monday, June 24, 2002, at her home. She had been in ill health for the past two and a half years. Born Sept. 13, 1922, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Grant Foster and Helen (Wray) Smith. In 1952 she married the late Richard D. Lepley, who passed away Nov. 14, 1990. Surviving are: six children and a daughter-in-law, Carol Ann Grove, Ringtown, Teree I. Hoover, Timothy G. and Debra Benner, Rick W. Lepley and Joel L. Lepley, all of McClure, and Jon C. Lepley, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two sisters, Phyllis Thompson, Lewistown, and Nancy Bogar, RR2, McClure; six grandchildren, Randy, Jeff, Beth, Shane, Ty, and Kara, and 13 great-grandchildren, Matt, Ali, Sarah, Courtney, Garrett, Erin, Andrew, J.T., Jacob, Kurtis, Logan, Brody and Dalton. She enjoyed reading, dining out, her grandchildren, pinochle and helping make Pot-Pie at the annual fireman's carnival. Her funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Laura V. Lewis
LAKE WALES, FL - Laura V. Lewis, 80, of 3941 Rolling Hills Court East, Lake Wales, FL, formerly of Essex, MD, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Heart of Florida Medical Center, Haines City, FL, of natural causes. Born May 10, 1922, in Essex, MD, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Frances (Slade) Brown. Her husband, Joseph Lewis, preceded her in death. Surviving are a son Bill, married to Ester Lewis of Allensville; a daughter, Laura Lee Reichert of Lake Wales, FL; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and a sister, Violet Moore of Baltimore, MD. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Brown, and a sister, Regina Brown. She was a homemaker and had also been employed at Esskay Meat Packer, Essex, MD, for 39 years. BERWICK - Erin A. Lindsey, 16, of Berwick and formerly of Lewistown, died at 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2002, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born March 8, 1986, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of Lori (Metz) Shaffer, Berwick and Kurvin F. Lindsey, Westboro, MA. Also surviving are; stepfather, Scott Shaffer, Berwick; step mother, Svetlana Lindsey; Maternal grandparents, Mrs. and Mr. James Shreffler, Lewistown; Maternal grandmother, Nellie Roberts, Lewistown; Paternal grandparents, Mrs. and Mr. Howard Lindsey, Alfarata; and siblings, Devin Lindsey, Berwick, Kelby Lindsey, Berwick, and Scott Shreffler, Lewistown. John H. Lingle
COLYER - John H. Lingle, 99, of Colyer, Rural Centre Hall, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Centre Community Hospital, State College. Born Jan. 28, 1903, in Potter Township, Centre County, he was the son of the late Frank T. and Martha Lucinda Lingle. His wife, Mary Virginia Bigelow, preceded him in death in 1979. He is survived by a son, Eugene F. Lingle, Colyer; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He had worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, worked on a drag line near Clearfield, for a construction company in State College, and during WW II he worked for Standard Steel, Lewistown. He then worked in Janitorial Services at Penn State until his retirement. He attended Colyer Brethren in Christ Church, Colyer, and was a member of Centre Hall Senior Citizens. Early in life he enjoyed hunting. His funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral Service, 226 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Centre Hall, with the Rev. Darrell L. Beatrice L. Linn
KISTLER - Beatrice L. Linn, 81, a resident of Malta Home, formerly of Kistler, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at Lewistown Hospital. Born May 11, 1920, in Olean, NY, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Ida (Hartman) May. Her stepmother, Edna Rice, Lynchburg, VA, survives. Her husband, Clarence "Rusty" Linn, whom she married July 8, 1942, preceded her in death. Also surviving are: two sons, David R. Linn, Newton Hamilton, and Terry W. Linn, Silverford, Mt. Union; a sister, Thelma Myers, Dry Run; two step-sisters and one step-brother, Louise White, Lynchburg, VA, JoAnn Bradford, Christianburg, VA, and Oscar May Jr., Madison Heights, VA; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Leah May. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mt. Union, with the Rev, Gordon Ross officiating. Gerald George Liveringhouse
LEWISTOWN - Gerald George Liveringhouse, 82, of 15 Goss Terrace, Lewistown, died at 6:05 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002 at Ohesson Manor, Lewistown. Born Sept. 27, 1920, in Huntingdon, he was a son of the late James E. and Ella V. (Huffman) Liveringhouse. His wife, Mabel (Smith Collins) Liveringhouse, whom he married June 6, 1969, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Samuel Getz, Ferguson Valley; three step-daughters, Cheryl Thomas, Hershey, whom he raised, Deb and Larry Vaughn, Lewistown, Bonnie and Nelson Wilson, Lewistown; two brothers, Harold Liveringhouse, Lewistown, and Eugene Liveringhouse, Hershey; two grandsons, ten step-grandchildren, one great-grandson, eleven step great-grandchildren, and two step great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Audette Deavor; a brother, Donald Liveringhouse, and a step-grandson, Jonathan Paige. He was a veteran serving in the European Theater of World War II, having been decorated eight times. He worked at Overhead Door, then at FMC Viscose as a welder for 27 years and he retired from Penn State University in 1983. He was a member of Lake Park United Methodist Church since 1929. He was a life time member of VFW, City Hook and Ladder, and Brooklyn Fire Company. His memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Lake Park United Methodist Church, W. Fourth St. and Crystal Springs St., Lewistown with a visitation of family and friends to follow in the church social room. Margaret I. Locke
STRODES MILLS - Margaret I. Locke, 85, of Spruce Hill Drive, Strodes Mills, died on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at her home. Born Aug. 30, 1917, in Mt. Union, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Harriet (Jeffries) Snyder. Her husband, James B. "Short" Locke, preceded her in death on Aug. 10, 1997. Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Mills of Strodes Mills and Crystal Beaver of Reedsville; a sister, Dorothy Corbin of Panama City, FL; a brother, Harry Snyder of Snow City, MD; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter and two brothers, Cecil Snyder and Luther Snyder. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lewistown. She was also a member of Mountainview Rebekah Lodge #227, Mt. Union, and the auxiliary to the Madden-Wennick VFW Post 518, Rockhill Furnace, where she also belonged to the home association. At one time she, along with her husband, owned and operated the Shady Inn in Shade Gap for 15 years. She was a longtime supporter of St. Lobe Indian School in Ashland, MT. Cynthia J. "Cindy" Long
MIFFLIN - Cynthia J. "Cindy" Long, 33, of HCR 67, Mifflin, died at 3:20 p.m., Saturday, April 27, 2002, at her residence following an extended illness. Born Nov. 22, 1968, in Derry Township, Mifflin County, she is the daughter of Raymond B. and Nancylee (Horning) Gray of RR2 Port Royal. She was a loving wife to Stephen D. Long whom she married Feb. 13, 1993. Also surviving are: three children, Shelbylyn Long, Darwin Tyler Long and Travis Banks Long, all at home; two brothers, Raymond Lee Gray, RR1, Port Royal and Norman Banks Gray, RR2 Port Royal. She was preceded in death by a sister, Karen Ann Gray. She was a 1986 graduate of Juniata High School and continued to take Computer Science courses. She attended the Cedar Grove Brethren in Christ Church, RR4 Mifflintown. Earlier in life she was employed by Hardee's Restaurant, Mifflintown, and later as a bookkeeper for Jay Fulkroad and Sons Inc., RR2 McAlisterville, Agway, Mifflin and Agstar Agronomy, Mifflin. She was also a Longaberger Basket Consultant for many years. Her funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday from the Cedar Grove Brethren in Christ Church, RR4 Mifflintown, with the Pastor Warren L. Peachey officiating. Interment will be in the New Church Hill Cemetery, RR2 Port Royal. Joseph P. Long Sr., MD
MARTINSBURG - Joseph P. Long Sr., MD, 89, of The Cottages of Homewood at Martinsburg, died Thursday afternoon, Aug. 29, 2002, at the home. Born Feb. 26, 1913, at the homestead farm, one mile south of Bakers Summit, he was the son of Joseph P. and Elizabeth (Detwiler) Long. His first wife, Beatrice Curnow, RN, whom he married on Aug. 29, 1942 at Fort Belvoir, VA, preceded him in death on Oct. 1, 1988. His second wife, Dorothy Ranck, RN, whom he married on Aug. 20, 1991 in Harrisburg, survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Kottmann of Brookville, FL; three sons, Joseph P. Jr. of Hopkinton, NH, Paul R., MD, of Wilkes-Barre and Jeffrey M. of Havertown; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Ruth, Catherine, Christine, Grace and Olive, and a brother, John. He was a member of The First Church of the Brethren, Roaring Spring. He was a 1930 graduate of Roaring Spring High School, a 1934 graduate of Juniata College and a 1939 graduate of Jefferson Medical School, Philadelphia. He taught school for one term at the Ore Hill One Room School, Roaring Spring RD. He interned at The Methodist Hospital, Philadelphia from 1939 to 1940, and served as chief resident physician from 1940 to 1941. He was called to active duty with the U.S. Army Medical Corps in October 1941 at Fort Belvoir, VA, and served two years and one-half years overseas in French Morocco, Italy, France and Germany. He retired from the active Army Reserves with a rank of lieutenant colonel. He was certified by the Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. After returning from active duty, he returned to the Philadelphia area and practiced obstetrics and gynecology. He also taught at Jefferson Medical School, obtaining the rank of clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology. In 1978 he moved to the Carlisle area and served as gynecologist at the Dunham Army Health Clinic, retiring in 1990. After retiring from government service, Dr. Long was awarded The Meritorious Civilian Service Award and The Order of Military Merit. He was a member of the American and Pennsylvania medical associations, the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the American Society of Fertility and Sterility. He was also a member of the Murray-Appleman American Legion Post #147, Roaring Spring. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the J. Gary Thompson Funeral Home, Roaring Spring, with Pastor Galen H. Brumbaugh officiating. Interment will be in Holsinger Cemetery, Bakers Summit. At the request of the deceased, there will be no viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Long Family Scholarship at the First Church of the Brethren, Roaring Spring.

Michael A. Los
MT UNION - Michael A. Los, 81, of 505 N. Drake St., Mt Union, died at 8:30 a.m. Monday Aug. 26, 2002, at his home. Born Sept. 1, 1920, in Vineyard, Wayne Township, Mifflin County, he is a son of Andrew and Anna (Chronowsko) Los. His wife, Edna B. "Peg" (Baker) Los, survives. Also surviving are: two children, Michael Andrew Los Jr. of Aurora, CO and Teresa A. Mykut of Huntingdon; three siblings, Sophie Semla of RD1, McVeytown, Louis Los of Huntingdon and Stella Los of Mt. Union; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: two brothers, Joseph and John Los; infants, Joseph and Mary Los. He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Mt. Union, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus #6106. He graduated from Mt. Union High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired after 32 years with Owens-Corning Fiberglass, Huntingdon. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the St. Catherines Catholic Church, Mt. Union with the Rev. Fr. Donald V. Losch
McALISTERVILLE - Donald V. Losch, 80, of RR1 McAlisterville, died at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at his home. Born March 24, 1922, in Juniata County, he was a son of the late Henry O. and Anna (Dressler) Losch. His wife, Virginia M. (Hepner) Losch, whom he married on Oct. 20, 1945, survives. Also surviving are: four sons, Robert C. Losch, Mifflin, Roger K. Losch, Lewistown, Lawrence D. Losch, RR1 McAlisterville, and Barry E. Losch, Port Treverton; four brothers, Victor Losch, Camp Hill, Joseph Losch, Florida, Wayne Losch, Dauphin and Orville Losch, McAlisterville; three sisters, Gladys Sheaffer, Selinsgrove, Mildred Hepner, McAlisterville and Carolyn Stoner, Georgia; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Timothy V. Losch on June 12, 1992, and Allen D. Losch, in infancy, a grandson, Jason N. Losch, three brothers, Gerald Losch, Elwood Losch and Larry Losch, one sister, Wanda Lesher, and a half-brother, Leroy Dressler. He was employed as a mechanic for United Parcel Service, Harrisburg until his retirement in 1984. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church, RR1 Richfield, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 925, Millerstown and active with the Retired Teamsters. His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the McAlisterville Chapel of Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. Kathleen M. Kinney officiating. Phyllis E. Lovette
MCCLURE - Phyllis E. Lovette, 55, of 25 Pine Knot Lane, McClure, died at 5:36 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Aug. 3, 1946, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of Thomas W. Wilson of Milroy, and the late Myrtle Mae (Barger) Wilson. Her husband, Gale James Lovette, survives. Also surviving are: a son, Jason B. Lovette, Mexico, PA, and a stepson, David G. Lovette, Monroe Falls, OH; sister and brothers, Mrs. Gene (Joann) Kibe, Milroy, William T. Wilson, Milroy, Darrol W. Wilson, Milroy; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina Renee Lovette, on June 8, 1975, and an infant son on Nov. 14, 1978. She was a 1964 graduate of Kishacoquillas High School. She was employed as a lab technician at Lewistown Hospital. She attended Kish Valley Grace Brethren Church, Reedsville. Flossie E. Luse
CENTRE HALL - Flossie E. Luse, 82, of Centre Hall, died at 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Centre Crest Nursing Home in Bellefonte. Born May 8, 1920, in Spring Township, she was the daughter of the late Samuel U. and Alma F. (Horner) Burris. On June 8, 1941, in Beach Haven, she married Richard E. Luse, who survives at home. Surviving are: three daughters, Dora R. Breon and husband Eugene R., Spring Mills, Carol A. Billett and husband Taylor L., Bellefonte and Esther K. Fultz and husband Gary R., Belleville; three sons, Thomas L. Luse and wife Donna R., Lewistown, John A. Luse Sr. and wife Susan J., Aaronsburg and Richard C. Luse, at home; a sister, Marie Ammerman, Bellefonte; two brothers, Lawrence K. and Evan U. Burris, both of Bellefonte; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five sisters; five brothers; and a granddaughter. She is a 1940 graduate of Bellefonte High School. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Centre Hall. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, raising flowers especially roses, watching soap operas and spending time with her family. Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 301 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Centre Hall, with the Rev. LeRoy E. P. Reitz officiating. Interment will be in Reformed and Lutheran Cemetery, Centre Hall. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Church. George L. Lutz
BELLEVILLE - George L. Lutz, 94, of Valley View Retirement Community, formerly of Centre Hall, died Monday, April 22, 2002, at the retirement home. Born June 2, 1907, in Centre Hall, he was the sone of the late Earl and Esther (Snyder) Lutz. His wife, M. Leone (Reed) Lutz, whom he married Oct. 29, 1939, preceded him in death on Feb. 26, 1999. Surviving are: sisters-brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Alma Schaeffer and Hazel Rimmey, and two brothers, John and James Lutz. He was a 1926 graduate of Centre Hall Potter High School. For nearly 50 years, he owned and operated Lutz Trucking in Centre Hall, specializing in working with government trucking contracts in the Mid Atlantic States. After his retirement he worked in trucking sales at Valley GMC in State College. He was a 70 plus year member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Centre Hall, where he served on the consistory for many terms, and as president for several of those terms. He was also a member of the men's chorus for many years. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association, and was honored with a 50 year membership plaque. He served on the board of directors at First National Bank of Centre Hall (now Northwestern Savings Bank) for many years. He was a life member of Centre Hall Fire Company, having served as president for several terms. He was a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Old Fort Lodge 537 of the Free and Accepted Masons in Centre Hall, the Williamsport Consistory, Jaffa Shrine in Altoona, and was the last charter member of Forest 129 of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon. He especially enjoyed camping and owned several camping units throughout his lifetime. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Church of Christ, North Pennsylvania Avenue and East Ridge Street, Centre Hall, with the Rev. S. Leigh Pick officiating. Interment will follow in Reformed and Lutheran Cemetery, Centre Hall. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral Services, 226 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Centre Hall, where Masonic Service will be conducted at 9 p.m. by members of Old Fort Lodge 537. Mae E. Lyter
LEWISTOWN - Mae E. Lyter, 75, of 23 N. Grand St., Lewistown, died at 2:58 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2002 at Valley View Haven, Belleville. Born Aug. 2, 1926, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Catherine (Harris) Carolus. Her husband, Joseph M. Lyter, survives. Also surviving are three children, Joseph Carolus, Michael Lyter and Mrs. James (Lisa) Shirk, all of Lewistown; five siblings, Mrs. Marvin (Charlotte) Haubrick of Lewistown, Harold Carolus of McVeytown, Earl Carolus of Granville, Mrs. John (Hazel) Dorman of Lewistown and Larry Carolus of Lewistown; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. She was a housewife. She was a member of Strode Mills Baptist Church and Ladies Missionary Society. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Strodes Mills Baptist Church, with Rev. Jonathan God officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. A viewing will be held 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown.
