Robert Siegel
Robert Siegel, 91, a lawyer in Lewistown for 50 years prior to his retirement in 1985 and a leader throughout that time in the Mifflin County Bar Association and the local Jewish community, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. Mr. Siegel and his wife Pearl left their Lewistown home, at 521 Lindbergh Way, in 1985 to spend their retirement years in Sun City West and Sun City, Arizona. In March of this year, Pearl Siegel died at age 91, after 64 years of marriage to Robert Siegel. Mr. Siegel then moved from Arizona to the Washington, D.C. area, where his son Richard resides. Robert Siegel practiced in Lewistown from 1934 to 1984 with his family's law firm, Siegel & Siegel. He advised and represented a number of municipal governments and school districts in Mifflin County, serving as solicitor for the Borough of Lewistown, the Chief Logan Joint School District, the Borough of Juniata Terrace and the Mifflin County Redevelopment Authority. In the 1950s he was a key figure in the expansion and modernization of schools in Mifflin County to accommodate the post-World War II "baby boom." He was solicitor of the Chief Logan district in 1953 when it formed as a merger of the schools of Burnham Borough and Derry and Decatur Townships and unveiled plans to build a large new high school in Highland Park. After citizens' groups brought protracted litigation to stop construction of the new school, Mr. Siegel successfully defended Chief Logan in court and in 1959 the school opened. Mr. Siegel also had a general legal practice that included wills and estates, real estate transactions and trial work. Among his clients were the Lewistown Trust Company, the Mifflin County Savings and Loan Association and several insurance companies. He argued numerous appeals in the Pennsylvania Superior and Supreme Courts. An active member of the Mifflin County Bar Association, he served as its president in 1961. Robert Siegel was born March 21, 1911, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the son of immigrants from Lithuania who had arrived in Lancaster in 1906. In 1923 an older brother, Harry L. Siegel, graduated from Dickinson Law School and came to Lewistown to establish a law office. Robert Siegel did his undergraduate studies at the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania and at Dickinson College. In 1934 he graduated from Dickinson Law School and joined his brother in the practice of law in Lewistown. The firm became Siegel & Siegel, and the brothers were to practice law together for nearly five decades, until Harry Siegel's death in 1981. In his 50 years in Lewistown Robert Siegel played a leading role in the local Jewish community. He was chairman of the United Jewish Appeal campaign, president of the Ohev Sholom Synagogue and president of the Lewistown Bnai Brith Lodge-Zionist District. The recipient of many awards for service to Jewish causes, he was first honored by the United Jewish Appeal in 1948. At that time he led the Lewistown Jewish community's fund-raising efforts to assist Jews displaced by the recent Holocaust in Europe and to establish Israel as a free and independent Jewish state. During his time as a leader of the Ohev Sholom Synagogue in the 1950s, the congregation grew to comprise more than 75 families and built a large addition to its building on East Third Street as a community center and religious school. Along with the activities of his synagogue, Mr. Siegel had a special interest in the State of Israel, which he and his wife visited several times. Their first trip was in 1952, accompanying their 13-year-old son Richard to hold his bar mitzvah ceremony in Jerusalem. As retirees in Arizona, Robert and Pearl Siegel became active in their new synagogue, Temple Beth Shalom, and in other community work. Shortly after arriving in the Sun City area, Robert Siegel began volunteer work for the United Jewish Appeal and soon was made campaign chairman, serving for two consecutive years. In 1989 he received the Dr. Abraham B. Tamis Leadership Award from the Sun City-Sun City West Division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix. He volunteered at the R.H. Johnson Memorial Library in Sun City West and belonged to the Sun Cities Lawyers Club. He also pursued his principal hobbies of reading, travel, Jewish studies and golf. He is survived by his son Richard D. Siegel, of Washington, D.C., his son-in-law Richard Sweet, of Charlotte, NC, and five grandchildren. His daughter, Judith Siegel Sweet, preceded him in death in 1982. Funeral services were held July 28, 2002, at Tifereth Israel Congregation in Washington, D.C. Burial was at Sunland Memorial Park, Sun City, Arizona, on July 30, 2002.
