Preface
The foregoing was taken from the records of the Pleasant
Grove Baptist Church and the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. There
are three volumes of the church records, which have "been very
well written and preserved, through nearly a century and a
half. Volume II and III are made of leather, beautiful old
books. The church should be very proud to be able to say that
they have them.
We have spent many hours copying these records. We tried to
copy every word as it was spelled, although the spelling of
those by-gone days, was not exactly as it is today. Many of
the entries were very difficult to read, because of the fading
of the ink, due to the passing of time. We trust that all who
read it will enjoy it as much as we did, doing it. Kirn Sloane
helped with the checking of these records.
Some of the cemetery records were taken from the burial
permits, while others were taken from the inscriptions on the
tombstones. Mary Sprowls and I, (Helen Borkowski), did the
copying of the tombstones with the help from Mark and Melinda
Plants. A lot of. these stones were very weather beaten and
very hard to read, some of them were impossible to read, but
we tried very hard. We used chalk, flour, water, dirt, carbon
paper, wax paper and play dough, on some of the old stones,
trying to make sure that we were copying them correctly. Also
we tried at different hours of the day when the sun would be
shinning from a different angle on the stones.
We are grateful to the Church Board and any others from the
congregation for their willingness to let us go through this
valuable history. By adding some pictures, provided by Bertha
and Mary Elliott, Edna Calvert and others of the neighborhood,
as well as other interesting things, which we have been told,
we were able to put together this book, which will be preserved
for the coming generations.
