Linda L. Lawver Bartko, 46, of Jefferson R.R.1, formerly of Monongahela, died Tuesday, August 18, 1998, in West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born July 21, 1952, in Brier Hill, a daughter of the late Amnie and Caroline Stillwagon Lawver. Mrs. Bartko graduated from Jefferson Morgan High School in 1971 and Pittsburgh Beauty Academy. She was a homemaker and a member of Green Valley Church of God, where she was Sunday school secretary and active in Ladies Ministry and the food bank. On November 16, 1974, she married Richard A. Bartko, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Dortha McGowan of Monongahela and Samantha Bartko at home; two sisters, Asenath Rose of Pitt Gas and Thelma Adkins of Florence, Ky.; three brothers, Amnie "Bud" of East Millsboro, Carl of Colliers, W.Va., and Alonzo "Lonnie" Lawver of Brownsville. Deceased are three daughters, Regina Flower Bartko and twins Cora Beth and Toni Raschel Bartko; four sisters, Louella Furman, Dortha Bennett and two who died in infancy; and four brothers, Jack Lawver and three who died in infancy.

Irene W. Burgess

Irene W. Burgess, 81, of Waynesburg R.D.4, died Tuesday, August 18, 1998, in West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a brief illness. She was born April 26, 1917, in New York, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Walkosak. Mrs. Burgess resided most of her life in Waynesburg, where she was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. She was also a member of AARP. She performed janitorial work for several businesses and offices in Waynesburg and worked several years for Servicemaster and Gallatin Bank. On March 9, 1939, she married John W. Burgess, who died May 15, 1982. Surviving are three sons, Chester S. Burgess of York, Charles Edward Burgess of Tuscumbia, Ala., and Joseph Leroy Burgess of Waynesburg; three grandchildren, Joseph Jr., Chastity and James D. Burgess; and three great-grandchildren. Deceased are a son, James W. Burgess; and three brothers, Frank, Joseph and Arnold Walkosak.

Robert Deter Jr.
Retired mechanic with Gateway Coal Co.
Robert Deter Jr., 72, of Jefferson R.D.1, died unexpectedly at 2:42 a.m. Wednesday, August 19, 1998, in St. Francis Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born October 4, 1925, in Pitt Gas, a son of Robert and Mamie Shipley Deter. Mr. Deter was a retired mine mechanic foreman with Gateway Coal Co. and was chief mine electrician. He worked in the coal mines for 47 years. During World War II, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army in Germany and northern France. He was a member of American Legion Post 954 in Jefferson, UMWA Local 6330, Moose Lodge 461, Waynesburg, and an honorary member of American Sheriff's Association. On April 4, 1952, in Mather Christian Church, he married Elda M. Fike, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Roberta Ann Howard and Rebecca Jean Koscheck, both of Jefferson; two sons, Robert E. Deter of Waynesburg R.D.1 and Randall S. "Fred" Deter of Waynesburg R.D.3; five grandchildren, Anthony and Brittany Howard, Megan and Matthew Deter and Felicha Koscheck; four brothers, Charles O. and Albert Deter, both of Jefferson, Gilbert Deter of Tyrone, Okla., and Henry Deter of Standford, Fla.; and a sister, Virginia Kiefer of Canonsburg. Deceased are two brothers, Edward and Levi Deter.

Vance C. Hickman

Vance Clayton Hickman, 80, of Tampa, Fla., died Tuesday, August 18, 1998, in Vencor Hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla. He was born April 19, 1918, in Beallsville, a son of Vance S. and Cora Horn Hickman. Mr. Hickman was Methodist. He was an agricultural farmer and lived in the Tampa area since 1998, coming from Vero Beach, Fla. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 39 of Vero Beach. Surviving are a brother, Clarence Hickman of Beallsville; and a sister, Grace H. Williams of Tampa, Fla. Graveside services are to be held Friday, August 21, in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.

Doris M. Hill

Doris M. Hill, 85, of 145 Stewart Street, Waynesburg, died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 18, 1998, at home, following a lengthy illness. She was born April 13, 1913, in Holbrook, a daughter of John L. and Goldie Applegate Isiminger. She was a 1931 graduate of Richhill Township High School and was a homemaker. She worked several years at Comeron Pottery and as a nanny for several years for Dr. Greenlee. She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, Wind Ridge. Surviving are two sisters, Janet L. Isiminger, with whom she made her home for the past 35 years, and Virginia Headley of Holbrook; a granddaughter, Tonia R. Hill; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a son, Capt. John R. Hill, missing in action during the Vietnam War since April 1971; and a brother, Harold Isiminger.

Bruno Latini
Duck pin bowling national title holder
Bruno "Pee Wee" Latini, 78, of McDonald, died Wednesday, August 19, 1998, in his home. He was born January 18, 1920, in Leckrone, a son of Joseph and Teresa Latini. Mr. Latini was a member of Irons Memorial Presbyterian Church, McDonald. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and on D-day was wounded on Omaha Beach, France, and was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star for bravery in action. He retired from Universal Cyclops, Bridgeville, in January of 1979, after 39 years of service. Mr. Latini was an avid duck pin bowler, and in sanctioned league bowling (ARDBC), had the highest average in the U.S. and Canada. Mr. Latini was an amateur artist and enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and watching his grandchildren play sports. On June 29, 1946, he married Anna Ciammaichella, who survives. Also surviving are a son, William Latini of Midway; three daughters, Barbara Wiener of Texas, Carol Bailey of Washington and Janice Vernillo of Midway; two brothers, Dan Latini of McDonald and Deno Latini of Bridgeville; two sisters, Annie Eiler of McDonald and Dena Amend of Bridgeville; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Deceased are two brothers, James and Richard Latini.

Dorothy M. Lutz, 76, of Bethel Park, died Wednesday, August 19, 1998, at home. She was born April 30, 1922, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Henry A. and Bertha Mae Dennis Stoltenberg. Mrs. Lutz was a homemaker. Surviving are two sons, William D. Lutz of Washington and Michael H. Lutz of Bethel Park; and a daughter, Barbara A. Geis of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren; and a brother, Clarence Stoltenberg of Bridgeville. Deceased is her husband, Merlin J. Lutz.

James R. Ritenour

James R. "J.R." Ritenour 82, of Cokeburg Junction, Ellsworth, died Tuesday, August 18, 1998, in Washington Hospital. He was born March 26, 1916, in Normalville, Fayette County, a son of Ralph P. and Mary C. Henry Ritenour. From 1960 to 1985, Mr. Ritenour owned and operated Ritenour and Sons Auto Salvage in Ellsworth. He had also worked for U.S. Steel, Homestead Works, where he retired in 1971 after 21 years of service. He was a former member of the Eagles Club 1809, Independent Club, Lithuanian Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5454, all of Bentleyville. On January 24, 1939, in Connellsville, he married Allie Mae Porterfield, who died August 27, 1991. Surviving are five sons, Thomas R., Joseph and Ricky Ritenour, all of Cokeburg Junction, William Ritenour of Champion and James L. Ritenour of Scenery Hill; eight daughters, Dorothy Ament of Ligonier, Patsy Shawley of Champion, Mary Ellen Thomas of Acme, Bonnie Lou Riley of LaFayette, La., Debra Jenkins and Sally Jo Evans, both of Ellsworth, Arlene Luketich of Cokeburg Junction and Marlene Fereza of Ontario Village; 44 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Alanzo Ritenour of Connellsville and Clarence and Kenny Ritenour, both of Normalville; seven sisters, Irene Kiser of Rector, Dellmae Schmuck, Ruth Fowler, Eleanor Ansell, Elizabeth Eicher, all of Normalville, Thelma McClintock of Yucaipa, Calif., and Betty McKlveen of Ligonier; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a daughter, Hazel M. Geary; twin sons, Dennis and Danny; and a brother, Eugene Ritenour.

Lenora Stevenson

Lenora Stevenson, 86, of South Main Street, Houston, died Wednesday, August 19, 1998, in her home. Born March 3, 1912, in Cherry Valley, she was a daughter of Frank and Frances Hess Tait. Mrs. Stevenson was a charter member of Central Assembly of God Church in Houston. On November 28, 1935, she married Delmas Stevenson, who died August 19, 1996. Surviving are a daughter, Rose Marie Colussi of Washington; a son, Richard Wayne Stevenson, with whom she made her home; eight grandchildren, John Deco Jr., Debra Harmon, Rebecca Zito, Ginger Deco Noce, Richard Stevenson Jr., Jeffrey and Charles Stevenson and Kimberly Carrasquillo; four step-grandchildren, Joyce Schlanger, Daniel Sedora, Cheryl Bunner and Barry Colussi; 27 great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank Tait of Norwalk, Conn.; and three sisters, Mary Battistone of Muse, Viola Laminski of Canonsburg and Florence Skidmore of Crestline, Ohio. Deceased are a brother, John Napolitan; a sister, Frances Miller; and one great-grandson.

Frank Sweder
Lifelong resident of Cross Creek Township
Frank Sweder, 82, of Avella, died Wednesday, August 19, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals-Canonsburg. He was born December 27, 1915, in Cross Creek Township, a son of Joseph and Frances Madera Sweder. Mr. Sweder lived all his life in Cross Creek Township and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked 23 years as a coal miner and 25 years as a construction laborer, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Laborers Local 809 of Steubenville, Ohio. On May 24, 1947, he married Sarah Bonaventura, who died August 9, 1994. Surviving are two daughters, Marlene Puchi of McMurray and Frances Sweder of Carnegie; a son, John Sweder of Kissimmee, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Tami and Tracey. Deceased are three brothers, John, Joseph Jr. and Albert Sweder; and two sisters, Josephine Blanka and Anna David.

Robert C. Arthurs

Robert Charles Arthurs, 68, of Charleroi, died Tuesday, August 18, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born August 24, 1929, in McKeesport, a son of Charles Arthurs of Indiana, and the late Emma Louise Trautman Arthurs. Mr. Arthurs was a 1947 graduate of Norwin High School and a 1951 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor of science degree in economics. He received his master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1956, and was the assistant track coach at Pitt during his graduate school years. He was a member of Pittsburgh Bond Club and the Western Pennsylvania and the North Hills Genealogy Society. He was a past member of the Philadelphia and American Stock Exchanges and past president of Charleroi Rotary Club. He also was a past member of the Charleroi Chamber of Commerce and was chairman of the Mon Valley Industrial Development Authority since 1973. Mr. Arthurs was chairman of the Washington County Redevelopment Authority since 1980, a member of the Pitt Varsity Lettermen's Club and was chairman of Harvest Financial Inc. of Charleroi. Surviving are his wife, Madlyn Martucci Arthurs; a son, Robert Charles Arthurs II of Rostraver Township; three grandchildren, Claire Lynn, Chloe Lynn and Robert Charles Arthurs III; and a brother, Thomas J. Arthurs of Cherry Tree. Deceased is a brother, Edward Milton Arthurs who died in 1993.

John T. Bradshaw
Policeman in Carnegie for many years
John T. Bradshaw, 84, of Beech Street, Washington, died at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, 1998, in Washington Hospital. He was born April 20, 1914, in Carnegie, a son of William S. and Dora I. Kyle Bradshaw. Mr. Bradshaw was a member of Greenvalley Methodist Church in Arkansas. He had been a policeman in Carnegie for many years. He also had been employed as a fireman for Pennsylvania Railroad for 20 years. Mr. Bradshaw was a member of Centennial Lodge 544 F. & A.M. in Carnegie for more than 50 years. Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Walker of Monticello, Ark.; a brother Charles E. Bradshaw of Washington; and three grandchildren. Deceased is a brother, Robert W. Bradshaw. At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation Services and interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements by William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd.

Michael J. Gugar, 46, of Denbo Heights, died Thursday, August 20, 1998, in his home. He was born June 11, 1952, in Brownsville, a son of the late Michael and Barbara Konkus Gugar. Surviving are his wife, JoAnn Wright Gugar; a daughter, Brina Lovat of LaBelle; a son, Wesley Gugar of Grindstone; two sisters, Barbara Gugar of Philadelphia, and Cathy Homrock of Waldorf, Md.; and three nephews and a niece.

Grace K. Hupp

Grace K. Hupp, 67, of Jefferson R.D.1, died Thursday, August 20, 1998, in Allegheny General Hospital - Pittsburgh. She was born March 9, 1931, in White House, a daughter of Ernest and Berthal Frye Kelley. Mrs. Hupp was a 1949 graduate of Jefferson High School. She was a clerk at Southwestern Pennsylvania Water Authority in Jefferson for 18 years, retiring in 1996. Mrs. Hupp lived most of her life in Jefferson and was a member of Jefferson United Methodist Church and the church choir. On November 22, 1952, she married John William "Bill" Hupp, who died May 4, 1978. Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Dorsey of New Holland; a son, John W. Hupp Jr. of North East; two grandchildren, John W. Hupp III and Nicolas A. Hupp; two brothers, Roy Kelley of New Holland and Ray Kelley of Reamstown; and a sister, Velva Waldrop of Oxford. Deceased is a sister, Irene Kelley.

Bernice M. Meny

Bernice M. Meny, 87, of Green Tree, died Thursday, August 20, 1998, at McMurray Hills Manor. She was born January 27, 1911, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Charles and Cecelia Yudt. Mrs. Meny was a member of Sts. Simon and Jude Church, Scott Township. She was married to Joseph T. Meny, who is deceased. Surviving are three daughters, Charlene Cain of Pittsburgh, Phyllis Bornscheuer of Houston and Jean Doyle of Danville, Ky.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Charles V. Miller
World War II veteran received many medals
Charles Vincent Miller, 74, of Sunrise Drive, Washington, died at 3:45 a.m. Thursday, August 20, 1998, in his home. He had been ill since February. He was born July 31, 1924, in Washington, a son of Vincent Charles and Margaret Bert Miller. Mr. Miller had been employed as an operator at Brockway Glass Plant 7, formerly Tagart Valley Glass. He was a member of Fourth Presbyterian Church and had served on the session. Mr. Miller was in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Western Pacific Theater, serving with the 500 First AAA Gun Battalion. He received the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with one bronze star, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Miller was a life member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion and formerly served on the home association. On September 19, 1953, he married Virginia Rebecca Zebrasky who survives. Also surviving are a son, Gary W. Miller of Washington; a daughter, Karen Hoop of Hickory; two brothers, Harold Miller of Warren and Clarence Miller of Pittsburgh; four grandchildren, Kristen and Nathan Miller and Cody and Kaitlin Hoop.

Marjorie K. Osbourne

Marjorie K. Osbourne, 77, of Hickory, died Wednesday, August 19, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She was born March 29, 1921, in Boone, Iowa, a daughter of Bernard C. and Lillian McMahon Kelley. Mrs. Osbourne was a member of Hickory United Presbyterian Church and was a homemaker. She was a 1939 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School. On October 3, 1942, she married Alvan D. Osbourne, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Alvan D. "Bud" Osbourne Jr. of Hickory; a daughter, Susan Osbourne McCarthy of Columbus, Ga.; five grandchildren, Alexander A. D. Osbourne, Brandon K. Stewart, Cara S. Lawton, Brian, Emilie D. and Elizabeth M. McCarthy; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Veronica Price
Canonsburg resident was medical secretary
Veronica Price, 91, formerly of Canon House, Canonsburg, died Tuesday, August 18, 1998, in Washington County Health Center. She was born October 23, 1906, in Rochester, N.Y., a daughter of Alan and Anna McClean. Mrs. Price had resided in Canonsburg most of her life, and was employed at Canonsburg Pottery. She also was a medical secretary. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Center in Canonsburg. Surviving are a daughter, Karen Yovick of Imperial; and seven grandchildren. Deceased are her husband, James Price, who died in 1947; a son, Paul Price, who died April 13, 1998; and a sister, Ann Blasick.

Ruth Sprague
Teacher for Bentleyville, Charleroi schools
Ruth Marsteller Sprague, 81, of Ellsworth, died Wednesday, August 19, 1998, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born January 5, 1917, in Marguerite, Westmoreland County, a daughter of George F. and Edna M. Hails Marsteller. Mrs. Sprague was a 1935 graduate of Bentleyville High School and received her master's degree of education from California University of Pennsylvania. She was a schoolteacher for 21 years for Bentleyville schools and later in Charleroi School District. Mrs. Sprague was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church of Scenery Hill, where she was a past Sunday school superintendent, a Synod delegate and member of Ladies Aid. She was a member of Bentleyville Public Library Board of Trustees, and a past president of Bentleyville Lioness Club, where she served as past president and was on the board of directors. She also was past president of Bentleyville Pioneer Club. Mrs. Sprague also was a member of Gideons Washington East Chapter and once served as auxiliary president. She belonged to the Order of Eastern Star Monongahela Chapter 108, and was a life member of the Washington County Retired Public School Employees Association. On February 12, 1943, at First Presbyterian Church of Bentleyville, she married Luther Samuel Sprague, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Vivian S. Bauer of Scenery Hill and Elizabeth R. Dionne of Troy, N.C.; a son, Timothy P. Sprague of St. Louis Park, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Weir of Bentleyville, and Maxine Kelly of Largo, Fla.; a brother, Boyd Marsteller of Bentleyville; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a granddaughter, Rebecca Dionne; and a sister, Gail "Thelma" Morris.

Irma G. Weaver

Irma G. Weaver, 85, of Marianna, died Thursday, August 20, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. She was born May 17, 1913, in Centerville, a daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Baker Gillis. Mrs. Weaver attended West Bethlehem Township Schools and was a homemaker. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Lippincott, where she had served as secretary treasurer for the missionary society. On September 11, 1935, she married Floyd L. Weaver, who died in 1995. Surviving are a son, Ronald L. Weaver of Waynesburg; a brother, Chauncy Gillis of Centerville; a sister, Nancy Bane of Centerville; three grandchildren, Scott, and Gregory Weaver and Ronda Pust; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a son, Frank G. Weaver and twin infant sons; a great-granddaughter, Laura Lee Weaver; three brothers, Robert, William and James Gillis; and a sister, Margaret Neale.

John D. Angemeer

John Donald Angemeer, 70, of McMurray, died Thursday, August 20, 1998, at AUH-Canonsburg, following a lengthy illness. He was born January 10, 1928, in Finleyville, a son of Charles and Mary Kuchinic Angemeer. Mr. Angemeer was a retired bricklayer and a retired employee of Pittsburgh Testing Laboratories. He was a U.S. Army veteran. On November 24, 1948, he was married to Helen Houston, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Karen Reese of Fredericksburg, Va.; three grandchildren, Kelly, Scott and Rebecca Reese; two brothers, Cyril Angemeer of Tennessee and James Angemeer of the state of California; one sister, Hope Eirkson of Pittsburgh; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased is a brother, Charles Angemeer.

Dr. Umberto DeRienzo
Medical practice in Charleroi for 38 years
Dr. Umberto A. DeRienzo, 70, of Charleroi, died Thursday, August 20, 1998, at his home. Born May 1, 1928, in Fayette City, he was a son of Philip and Concetta DeLucia DeRienzo. Mr. DeRienzo had a medical practice in Charleroi for about 38 years. His wife, Angela Mariani DeRienzo, survives. Also surviving are five sons, Damian DeRienzo of Washington, D.C., Dr. Umberto DeRienzo of Canonsburg, Dante DeRienzo of San Diego, Calif., David DeRienzo of Finleyville and Philip DeRienzo at home; five daughters, Maria Lisa Brun of West Newton, Diane McCree of Charlotte, N.C., Regina Stefan of Charleroi, Angela Serrao of Rostraver and Christine DeRienzo of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Marion DeRienzo of Fayette City and Philip DeRienzo of Donora; and seven grandchildren. A brother, Patsy, died during World War II.

Mary A. Dravetsky

Mary A. Dravetsky, 80, of Spring Street, Richeyville, died at 2:34 a.m. Friday, August 21, 1998, at home. She was born November 29, 1917, in Ellsworth, a daughter of Andrew and Anna Pizik Sokol. Mrs. Dravetsky was Catholic. Surviving are a son, Frank R. Dravetsky of Richeyville; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are her husband, Frank Dravetsky, who was killed in action in World War II in the Philippines June 14, 1945; and two brothers, John Sokol, who died in 1975, and Andrew Sokol, who died in 1992.
