Felix W. Lutz, 89, formerly of Canonsburg and Canton Township, died Thursday, December 24, 1998, in South Hills Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Canonsburg. Mr. Lutz was born November 20, 1909, in Canonsburg. He was a member of St. Genevieve Worship Site of St. Patrick Parish. Prior to retirement, Mr. Lutz was employed as a steelworker by USX Corp. His wife, Stella Wisniewski, died August 1, 1987. Surviving is a son, Felix W. Lutz Jr. of West Finley. Deceased is a brother, John Lutz. Mr. Lutz was the last of his immediate family.

Anna Franks Olshock, 101, of National Pike, West Pike Run Township, died Thursday, December 24, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She was born August 20, 1897, in Shamokin, a daughter of John Milton and Anna Franks. Mrs. Olshock was a member of Beallsville United Methodist Church. On May 17, 1915, she married John M. Olshock, who died January 24, 1981. Surviving are a son, John M. Olshock of Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Anne O. Cleaver of West Pike Run Township; two grandsons, John T. Olshock of Washington and Dr. Richard C. Olshock of Denver, Colo.; and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Olshock was the last of her immediate family.

Margaret Zowada Olson, 78, of Shady Avenue, Bentleyville, died Thursday, December 24, 1998, in Havencrest Nursing Center, Carroll Township. She was born June 7, 1920, in Lowber, Westmoreland County, a daughter of John and Ann Zowada. Mrs. Olson was Catholic and a homemaker. Surviving are a son, Ronald J. Olson Sr. of Speers; two grandchildren, Ronald J. Olson Jr. and Renee D. Lepori; two sisters, Ann Testa of Herminie and Eve Mlinek of Wyno; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are her husband, Alex John Olson, who died November 16, 1983; and two sisters, Katherine Converso and Mary Mihalko Steadman.

Priscilla "Sue" Shearin, 80, of Fredericktown, died at 11:55 p.m. Thursday, December 24, 1998, in Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born November 11, 1918, in Vestaburg, a daughter of Michael and Anna Stulancheck Jessick. Mrs. Shearin was a member of the Parish of St. Oliver Plunkett. She was a graduate of Centerville High School and Brownsville General Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Shearin was a registered nurse and had retired in 1980 from LTV Steel Corp. (formerly J&L Steel Corp.), where she had worked as a nurse for many years. Surviving are her husband, Daniel R. Shearin; a sister, Irene Trotter of Morgantown, W.Va.; and many nieces and nephews. Deceased are four brothers, Michael and John (Jack) Jessick, and Michael and Andrew Vozar; and three sisters, Mary Moslin, Anna Sikora and Verona Laurenti.

Martin Walter "Walt" Sobczak, 73, of Canonsburg, died at 5 a.m. Thursday, December 24, 1998, in Forbes Hospice Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born May 15, 1925, in Canonsburg, a son of Martin Louis and Gertrude Zelinsky Sobczak. He attended Chartiers Hill Presbyterian Church and had spent the last 25 years in the Canonsburg area. Mr. Sobczak was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 861 of Canonsburg, where he was in charge of bingo for many years; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg; and American Legion Post 902 of Houston, where he served on the honor guard for the past 10 years. Mr. Sobczak retired from U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service. He served in World War II and the Korean War. On February 15, 1987, he married Ruth D. Stevens Mickle, who survives. Also surviving are two stepsons, Robert Mickle of Canonsburg and James Mickle of Erie; a brother, Raymond L. Sobczak of Canonsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Gretta Belle Hiles Somerville, 88, of Presbyterian Medical Center, Washington, formerly of 803 Evergreen Drive, Washington, died Friday, December 25, 1998, in the medical center. She was born July 31, 1910, in Canonsburg, a daughter of James F. and Lulu Fulton Hiles. Mrs. Somerville was a member of Church of the Covenant. She was a 1928 graduate of Canonsburg High School, and worked as a secretary for Canonsburg Thrift Co. for 10 years. She was a member of the Current Events Club, Brownson House auxiliary and AARP. On October 27, 1943, in Canonsburg, she married J. Russell Somerville, who died March 14, 1994. Deceased is her daughter, Alyne Wilkinson, who died August 8, 1988.

Betty J. Tanner

Betty J. Tanner, 76, of Greensboro R.D.1 (Mapletown), died unexpectedly at 9:35 p.m. Wednesday, December 23, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. She was born February 9, 1922, in Monongahela Township, Greene County, a daughter of Joseph Edward and Anna Frances Marshall Cox. Mrs. Tanner was a 1940 graduate of Mapletown High School and resided in the Monongahela Township and Mapletown areas all of her life. She was a member of Mapletown United Methodist Church and a former member of the former ladies auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6303 of Greensboro. On May 24, 1947, she married Kenneth B. Tanner, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Kenneth B. Tanner Jr. of Toledo, Ohio, Roy E. Tanner of Mapletown and Dennis K. Tanner of Roselle Park, N.J.; two daughters, Linda R. Dugan of Greensboro R.D.1 and Rhonda K. Turner of Mapletown; six grandchildren, Nathaniel and Zachary Turner, Ann, Christopher and Justin Tanner, and Kiley Dugan; three sisters, Jane E. Kalafsky of Pittsburgh, Kathryn Ives of Upper St. Clair and Grace Trew of Lower Burrell; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a son, Ronald Ray Tanner; two brothers, Glenn R. and Charles E. Cox; and a sister, Goldie L. Cox.

John J. Tarhalla, 86, of Bulger, died Thursday, December 24, 1998, in Washington Hospital. He was born March 9, 1912, in West Newton, son of Walter and Rose Tarhalla. Mr. Tarhalla was a member of St. Anne's Church, Bulger. He retired in 1975 from Weirton Steel Corp. On September 3, 1938, he married Virginia Bednarzik, who survives. Also surviving are one son, John (Jack) Tarhalla Jr. of Imperial; one daughter, Barbara Pizzuti of McDonald; one brother, Roman Tarhalla; and one grandson, Bryan Pizzuti.

Thomas Tharp
Retired teacher served on Jacktown Fair board
Thomas Tharp, 93, of Wind Ridge, died at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 23, 1998, in Franklin Care Center, Waynesburg, after a lengthy illness. He was born October 20, 1905, in Aleppo Township, Greene County, a son of Thomas Michael Tharp and Laura Wendell Tharp Kinney Cooper. He had resided in Wind Ridge since 1920. Mr. Tharp was a member of Harmony Presbyterian Church in Wind Ridge, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, served on the Clerk of Sessions for more than 30 years, taught Sunday school for more than 50 years and served as an elder. He was a 1928 graduate of Richhill High School and earned his teaching certificate from Waynesburg College. Mr. Tharp was a former member of the Jacktown Fair Committee, where he served as a board member and as secretary/treasurer for more than 50 years. He was employed as a sales agent for Nationwide Insurance Co. for 27 years. He also was employed by the West Greene School District as an elementary school teacher for 39 years prior to his retirement June 1, 1969. On October 29, 1927, he married Nanna Belle Reigle Tharp, who died October 8, 1992. Surviving are a son, Thomas R. Tharp of Keisterville; a daughter, Betty Jo Bissett of Centerville; a brother, Everett L. Tharp of Eustis, Fla.; a half sister, Wilma Kinney Whiteman of Wind Ridge; and three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Deceased are two brothers, Lloyd and Foster Tharp; a sister, Doris Parson; and a half sister, Hallie Sauder.

Andrew Whitco

Andrew (Andy) Whitco, 87, of Dunbar, died Friday, December 25, 1998, in Highlands Hospital, Connellsville. He was born April 9, 1911, in Avella, a son of John and Mary Chizmar Whitco. Mr. Whitco was a retired conductor and brakeman for Norfolk and Western Railroad, with 34 years of service, and was a life member of the United Trainman's Union. He was a member of St. Stephen's Byzantine Catholic Church, Leisenring, and a former member of the Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree, Council 948 of Connellsville; a life member of the Greek Catholic Union; and a former member of St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, Canonsburg, where he served as trustee, usher and treasurer. Surviving are his wife, Betty R. Pierce McQuigg Whitco; three daughters, Helen Grace of Muse, Anna Mae Whitco of Mt. Lebanon and Mary Parish of Finleyville; seven stepchildren, Joanne Kieta of Smock, Nancy Gibbs of Mathews, Va., Carol Wolfe of Hayes, Va., Ronald McQuigg of Yorktown, Va., Jean Eutsey of Dunbar, Richard McQuigg of Williamsburg, Va., and Lorraine Garlick of South Connellsville; two brothers, John Whitco of Scott Township and Michael Whitco of Wellsburg, W Va.; a sister, Helen Welshans of Colliers, W.Va.; 20 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are his first wife, Anna Korba Whitco; and a sister, Mary Whitco Korpus.

Alice Foust Lane

Alice Schaffner Foust Lane, 89, of Butler, died Wednesday, December 23, 1998, in LAS-Passavant, Zelienople. She was born May 1, 1909, in Butler, a daughter of George M. and Mary B. Quirk Schaffner. Mrs. Lane attended St. Paul's Parochial School, Butler High School, Butler Business College and Slippery Rock University. He earned a degree in library science. She was a member of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church of Butler, where she participated in the parish council, Ladies Guild and Christian Mothers and Calvary Cemetery board of directors. Mrs. Lane had been employed at Allegheny Power, Pennsylvania State Employment Service and W.R. Foust Sheet Metal. She previously had been employed as a Butler County librarian. She was a member of many associations, including the Butler Women's Club (GFWC); Catholic Daughters of America 443; the BPO Elks 170 auxiliary; Quota Club of Butler, where she served as past district governor and past president; Lending Hands-Butler County Community College Library, where she served as past president; Pennsylvania Library Association; American Lung Association of Western Pennsylvania, where she had been executive vice president; and the Butler chapter of the American Heart Association. She was associated with Catholic Charities, where she was a board member; the Butler Memorial Hospital auxiliary; the Health and Human Service Council of Butler; and the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania. Mrs. Lane was twice married. Her first husband, W.R. "Bill" Foust, died in 1932. Her second husband, William C. Lane, died in 1974. Surviving are a son, Thomas S. Foust of Washington; two grandsons, Thomas S. Foust Jr. of Glenview, Ill., and W. Michael Foust of Troy, Mich.; and two granddaughters, Annie Laurie Ellefson of Mt. Lebanon and M. Carolyn Kinskey of Nashville, Tenn. Deceased are two sisters, Cresentia Hoover and Grace Helmers; and three brothers, George, Thomas and Roger Schaffner.

WWII veteran worked for glass companies
Edward Lekwart, 77, of Maryland Avenue, Washington, died Wednesday, December 23, 1998, in Washington County Health Center. He was born October 14, 1921, in Washington, a son of Anthony and Aniela Jasttazemski Lekwart. Mr. Lekwart was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the 873rd Engineering Aviation Battalion. He was a member of St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church in Washington. Mr. Lekwart was employed by Taggert Valley Glass Co. and Brockway Glass Co., Plant No. 7, for many years. On October 3, 1948, in St. Hilary Church, Washington, he married Sophia Covaleski of Washington, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Edward J. Lekwart of Mill Valley, Calif.; a daughter, Chrisie Carroll of Washington; three sisters, Rose Jones and Helen McDonald, both of Washington, and Theresa Kania of Canonsburg; and five grandchildren, Phillip and Matthew Lekwart and Megan, Amanda and Donald Carroll. Deceased is a brother, Walter Lekwart.

Kathleen Louise Aretz, 74, of Montgomery, Ala., died Saturday, December 26, 1998. Surviving are two sons, James John Aretz Jr. of Montgomery and Thomas Michael Aretz of Destin, Fla.; three sisters, Phyllis Wheeler and Bonnie Boucher, both of DesMoines, Iowa, and Joanne Drinkwater of Milford, Maine; three brothers, Harold Dunton of Bangor, Maine, Phillip Dunton of California and Linwood Dunton of DesMoines; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Deceased are her husband, James J. Aretz; a son, John William Aretz; and two brothers, Bernard and James Dunton. A memorial Mass will be celebrated in Pennsylvania on a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the American Heart Association. Arrangements are being handled by Brooks-Cargile Funeral Home, Montgomery.

Ernest Howard Bahn, 73, of West Alexander, formerly of Texas, died Wednesday, December 23, 1998, in Heartland-Lansing Nursing Home, Bridgeport, Ohio. He was born August 10, 1925, in Pleasanton, Texas, a son of Herman and Mary Bahn. Mr. Bahn was a member of the First Christian Church, West Alexander. He was a coal miner for Valley Camp Coal Co. until his retirement. Mr. Bahn enjoyed woodworking and fishing. On June 8, 1956, he married Bertha Ellen Taylor, who died September 6, 1998. Surviving are two daughters, Mary Marie Haught of Independence, Ky., and Hilda Emma Pattison of West Alexander; four sisters, Pearl Johnson, Ellen Wallace, Mildred Black and Dorothy Riley, all of Pleasanton; eight grandchildren, Glenn Michael, Pamela Sue and Richard Howard Pattison and Amy, Christina, Katie, Rachael and Elizabeth Haught; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Also deceased are three brothers, Louis, Alfred and Walter Bahn; and two sisters, Clara May and Louise Morbey.

Monica Bess Burkett, 49, of California, died Sunday, December 27, 1998, in Havencrest Nursing Home, Carroll Township. She was born December 29, 1948, in Canonsburg, a daughter of the late Lloyd and Eugenia Heaps Burkett. Ms. Burkett was a graduate of California University of Pennsylvania, where she was employed for the past 15 years as a support specialist in the public relations department. Surviving is a son, Theodore Burkett of California. Deceased is a sister, Margaret Slusarczyk. There will be no public viewing or visitation. A memorial service will be held at California University at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to The Foundation for California University. Florence Gertrude "Peg" Cage, 93, of Waynesburg R.D.2, died at 3:15 a.m. Saturday, December 26, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. She was born July 30, 1905, in Derby, England, a daughter of George Arthur and Florence Keys Smith. Mrs. Cage lived her early life in Derby, and from 1911 to 1946, she lived in Cheltenham, England. She moved to Waynesburg in 1946. She was a member of the Washington Street United Methodist Church of Waynesburg. While in England, she worked as a secretary at the American War Office during World War II. She later worked as a secretary for the Ministry of Pensions until 1946. Mrs. Cage was a member of the James Farrell American Legion Post 330 auxiliary for 50 years. On August 25, 1943, she married Harry E. Cage, who died December 6, 1988. She was the last of her immediate family. At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation, and services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., Waynesburg.

James J. Caslow
Retired plant manager for Reliance Electric
James J. Caslow, 73, of Fayetteville, formerly of McLean, Va., died December 26, 1998, at home. He was born October 12, 1925, in McLean, a son of John F. and M. Matilda Maddox Caslow. Mr. Caslow started his career as an electrical worker with General Electric in Baltimore, Md., after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. During 24 years of service, he traveled to Iowa, Missouri and New Jersey with General Electric before joining Reliance Electric in Hammond, Ind., as plant manager. He was later transferred to the Washington, Pa., service center as plant manager, retiring after almost 20 years of service. He traveled extensively as a consulting engineer with both companies. Mr. Caslow was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1599, both in Chambersburg, and Greene Township Lions Club International. Surviving are his wife, Cecelia L. Caslow; two daughters, Laura C. Bulle of Garden City, N.Y., and Jama C. Wolfkill of Baltimore, Md.; three sons, Timothy J. Caslow of Kingsville, Md., Jonathan A. Caslow of Savannah, Ga., and Martin P. Caslow of Middle River, Md.; two stepsons, Scott Smith of Pittsburgh and Daniel R. Smith stationed in Korea; and nine grandchildren. Deceased are his first wife, Kathryn K. Caslow; and three brothers.

Florence M. Colella

Florence M. Colella of South Strabane Township died Thursday, December 24, 1998. She was a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. Mrs. Colella was an active member of the First United Methodist Church choir for 23 years. She enjoyed various community activities, including tennis and bowling, and she was a sports fan. Surviving are her husband, Thomas M. Colella; two daughters, Wendy M. McCue of Tulsa, Okla., and Betsy D. Raber of South Fayette Township; a sister, Lois Massey of North Royalton, Ohio; and a grandson, Alec Thomas Raber.

Edward J. Collage

Edward J. Collage, 83, of 51 Braden plan, Clarksville, died at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, December 26, 1998, in his home. He was born August 19, 1915, in Benham, Ky., a son of Josephine Kost Collage. He attended the East Bethlehem Township schools and Penn Commercial in Washington. Mr. Collage was a retired assistant mine foreman for Gateway Mine, J&L Steel Corp. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Clarksville, and his family was the original resident of the Braden plan. On December 2, 1937, he married Eva Shimborske Collage, who survives. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Scott A. Hogue of Clarksville, Carla Ann Bass of Jacksonville, Fla., and Sean E. Hogue of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Margaret Alexander of Waynesburg; three brothers, William Collage of Franklin, Frank Collage of Fredericktown and John Collage of Rice's Landing; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a daughter, Marlene A. Hogue, who died June 7, 1990; and a sister, Mary Chase.

Dorothy M. Crumrine

Dorothy M. Crumrine, 87, of Washington, died Friday, December 25, 1998, in Presbyterian Medical Center, Washington. She was born October 6, 1911, in Garrison, a daughter of George M. and Rose Hostutler Plants. Mrs. Crumrine was a member of Laboratory Presbyterian Church since 1939. She was a graduate of Waynesburg High School and Fairmont (W.Va.) Business College. She worked at J.C. Penney Co. as a cashier and bookkeeper for 20 years. She was a member of the Washington Chapter 409 of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Washington AARP. On June 8, 1939, in Winchester, Va., she married Elmer J. Crumrine, who died September 17, 1997. Surviving are a sister, Elizabeth Burson of Kansas; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, David Plants; and a sister, Dora Dague.

Karen Spencer Daniele, 48, of Anderson Avenue, Monongahela, died Sunday, December 27, 1998, in Monongahela Valley Hospital. She was born November 18, 1950, in Monongahela, a daughter of Harry G. and Eleanor Ross Spencer. Mrs. Daniele worked as a cook for Monongahela Valley Hospital for the past 14 years. She was a member of Mingo Presbyterian Church, Finleyville. Surviving, in addition to her parents, are a son, Ronald W. Reese of Monongahela; a daughter, Marcelle D. Reese of Rostraver Township; two brothers, Kenneth E. Spencer of Hillsborough, Ohio, and Ronald R. Spencer of Peters Township; and three grandchildren, Shanna E. Reese and John A. and Jessica R. Zites.

Michael Daugherty Sr.

Michael Joseph (Mike) Daugherty Sr., 82, of Shamrock, died Sunday, December 27, 1998, after a long illness. He was born October 3, 1916, in Russelton. Mr. Daugherty retired from Uniontown Builder's Supply Co. in 1979. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater and taking part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy. He was a member of Teamsters Local 491, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 47 and the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. (barbershop quartet). Surviving are his wife, Joan Nagy Daugherty; one daughter, Nancy Krepps of Washington; two sons, Michael J. Daugherty Jr. of Uniontown and Patrick Daugherty of Shamrock; and three grandsons, Eric and Neal Krepps and Michael Daugherty III. Deceased are a sister, Hannah Mullen; and a brother, Anthony Daugherty.

Betty Carrol Frederick, 66, of Finleyville, died Monday, December 28, 1998, in Monongahela Valley Hospital. She was born January 31, 1932, in Maysville, Ky., a daughter of Charles H. and Hazel Gordley Frederick. Mrs. Frederick lived most of her life in the Finleyville area. She was Protestant. She was a 1950 graduate of Bentleyville High School. She formerly owned and operated the Finleyville Dari-Delite on Route 88 and was also formerly employed by IBM of Pittsburgh. Surviving are two sisters, Norma Jane Sparks of Finleyville, with whom she resided, and Dorothy Ann Moore of Leechburg; and a brother, Harold Dean Frederick of Miami, Fla. Deceased is a brother, Gerald W. Frederick.

H. Leonard Frye
Former teacher in Jefferson-Morgan schools
H. Leonard Frye, 69, of Waynesburg R.D.1, died at 12:10 p.m. Saturday, December 26, 1998, in Washington Hospital. He was born March 6, 1929, in Delmont, a son of Arthur Z. and Edna Mae Anderson Frye. He was a graduate of Waynesburg College with a degree in education. He taught business education at the high school level at California and later in Jefferson-Morgan School District, where the majority of his teaching occurred. In addition to teaching, Mr. Frye raised purebred polled Hereford cattle. He had served as secretary/treasurer of the former Greene County Purebred Breeders. He was assistant livestock superintendent for the Greene County Fair for several years and was a former leader for the 4-H Beef and Lamb Club and clerked their sales for several years. He was active in the Republican Party and had served as chairman of the county party for several years. Mr. Frye was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesburg. On April 10, 1952, he married Betty Lee Cole, who died October 17, 1986. Surviving are a son, Thomas A. Frye of Waynesburg R.D.1; a granddaughter, Caroline Grace Frye; and a brother, Arthur Z. Frye Jr. of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Lucy E. Claffey Fuchs

Lucy Emma Claffey Fuchs, 90, of Beech Street, Washington, died at 9:50 a.m. Saturday, December 26, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She had been ill since November 16, 1998. She was born January 31, 1908, in Waynesburg, a daughter of Thomas F. and Emma Anderson Johnston. She was a homemaker and a member of Fourth Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Aide Society. On November 6, 1931, she married Harry Claffey, who died in 1938. Surviving are two daughters, Mary Lou McCann and Jo Ann Simms, both of Washington; six grandchildren, Gregory Simms, Lisa Lytton, Lou Ann LeVan, Joel McCann, Jonathan Simms and Billie Jo Mance; and seven great-grandchildren. Deceased are two sisters, Sara Johnston and Kate Ann Johnston.

Herbert Gardner Jr.

Herbert W. Gardner Jr., 70, of 607 Weaver Avenue, Canonsburg, died Saturday, December 26, 1998, in Washington Hospital. He was born December 4, 1928, in Pittsburgh, a son of Herbert and Helen Dalzell Gardner. He was a graduate of Perry High School. He owned and operated Gardner's Arco at Donaldson's Crossroads. Mr. Gardner was a member of White Eagles of Canonsburg. On November 26, 1965, he married Mary Franz, who survives. Also surviving eight sons, Thomas of Hickory, Robert of Canonsburg, William of Library, Stephen of Hickory, Herbert III of Harrisburg, Kurt of Upper St. Clair Township, Mark of Dormont and Eric of Peters Township; three daughters, Sharon Carrigan of Chattanooga, Tenn., Mary Alice Grimmer of Indianapolis, Ind., and Marta Ann Billick of Norvelt; 19 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A brother, Jack Gardner, is deceased.
