Howard Hubbard
Retired inspector at former McGraw-Edison plant
Howard Merwin "Merve" Hubbard, 79, of Barr Street, Canonsburg, died Wednesday, November 26, 1997, in the Greenery Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Canonsburg. He was born August 19, 1918, in New Martinsville, W.Va., a son of Ernest and Bessie Barton Hubbard. Mr. Hubbard was a retired inspector at the former McGraw-Edison plant in Canonsburg. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army Air Force. Mr. Hubbard was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg. On August 16, 1941, he married Ethel Namit, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Robert W. Hubbard of Los Altos, Calif., and Howard M. Hubbard Jr. of Canonsburg; and one grandson, Michael S. Hubbard. Deceased are three brothers and one sister. Services were private. The family suggests memorial contributions to First United Methodist Church of Houston.

Margaret J. Jacobs
Church pianist for 82 years
Margaret J. Jacobs, 98, of Wind Ridge R.D.1, died at 4 p.m. Saturday, November 29, 1997, in her home. She was born March 31, 1899, in McCracken, Aleppo Township, a daughter of P.R. and Mary Gideon Chapman. Mrs. Jacobs had resided in McCracken all her life and was a member of Sugar Grove Union Church, where she had served as church pianist. The Pennsylvania State Sunday School Association had recently awarded her a plaque honoring her 82 years of playing piano. She was a member and former office holder in the Aleppo Grange 2054, and was a member of the Pomona, State and National Granges. She was also a former 4-H leader in Aleppo Township. Mrs. Jacobs was a 1918 graduate of Aleppo High School. On February 18, 1919, she married Frank Ringland Jacobs, who died July 6, 1982. Mrs. Jacobs was the last of her immediate family. Surviving are two sons, William R. Jacobs of Holton, Kan., and Kenneth W. Jacobs of Wind Ridge R.D.1; one daughter, Dorothy Spencer of Lamar, Ark.; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 10 great great-grandchildren. Deceased are a daughter, Helen Campbell, who died January 3, 1997; a brother, LeGrand Chapman; and a sister, Salena McCracken.

C. Leonard Jenkins
Former employee of West Penn Power Co.
C. Leonard Jenkins, 83, of Carmichaels, died at 9 p.m. Saturday, November 29, 1997, at Uniontown Hospital. He was born June 17, 1914, in Franklin Township, Fayette County, a son of Harry C. and Nettie R. Hagerty Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins resided in the Point Marion area prior to moving to Carmichaels in 1960. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Carmichaels and the I.O.O.F. Lodge 51 of Brownsville. Mr. Jenkins worked at the West Penn Power Company until his retirement in 1976. His wife, Perie Morris Jenkins, who he married May 31, 1941, died July 23, 1993. Surviving are two sisters, Ruth Hazelbaker and Iva Blanche Gaudiello, both of Uniontown; and several nieces and nephews. Also deceased is a sister, Sarah Jenkins Cornet; and a brother, Henry Jenkins.

Aldine King
Former teacher in Greene County schools
Aldine King, 83, of Apartment 3, 75 Bonar Avenue, Waynesburg, died at 11:16 p.m. Friday, November 28, 1997, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, following a lengthy illness. She was born March 1, 1914, in Waynesburg, a daughter of S. Leasure and Goldie Roberts King. Mrs. King spent her entire life in Waynesburg. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesburg, where she had been an active member during her life, having served on various boards. At the time of her death, Mrs. King a member of the Program Council, United Methodist Women, Waynesburg Women's Club and Greene County Association of School Retirees. She was a graduate of Waynesburg High School and a 1936 graduate of Waynesburg College. Following her schooling, Mrs. King taught for three years at Greene County Children's Home. She then taught for Morgan Township and Jefferson Township schools for 40 years before retiring in 1976. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, Robert P. King and a sister, Violet King, who died in infancy.

Marian Lodovici
Former postmaster in New Eagle
Marian Furiga Lodovici, 76, of Fourth Avenue, New Eagle, died Saturday, November 29, 1997, in Jefferson Hospital, Jefferson Borough. She was born July 20, 1921, in New Eagle, a daughter of Frank and Maria Brovelli Furiga. In the early 1940s, Mrs. Lodovici worked as postmaster at New Eagle Post Office and later worked as a cook at the former Mon Valley Catholic High School until her retirement in 1982. She was a member of Transfiguration Catholic Church of Monongahela and was former president of the Catholic Daughters of America and a member of the Christian Mothers Altar Rosary Society. Mrs. Lodovici also was one of the founding members of the refunding club of Madonna Middle School. She was one of the original members of the PAL card club in New Eagle, a member of the New Eagle AARP and the Hoot Owl Athletic Club ladies auxiliary. On April 8, 1943, she married Bernard "Bim" Lodovici, who survives. Also surviving are one son, David P. Lodovici of Vandergrift; one daughter, Maria B. Hollis of Monessen; one brother, Raymond Furiga; one sister, Virginia Trunzo of New Eagle; and four grandchildren, Susan, Mark, Rebecca and Jessica Hollis. Deceased are three brothers, Angelo, Carl "Jim" and Frank Furiga; and two sisters, Rose Silko and Flora Balliard.

Frances S. Loughman
Oldest member of West Union Presbyterian Church
Frances S. Loughman, 96, of Washington, formerly of 125 Thompson Gardens, Waynesburg, died at 12:50 a.m. Saturday, November 29, 1997, at Humbert Lane Nursing Home, Washington. She was born December 29, 1900, in Princeton, Kan., a daughter of Atkinson and Rachel Salome Sellers. Mrs. Loughman spent her early life in Kansas. She lived in Ohio from 1946 to 1979. She then lived in Waynesburg for several years. For the past few years, she has resided in Washington. She was the oldest member of West Union Presbyterian Church, having joined in 1914. Mrs. Loughman was a graduate of Prosperity High School and also attended Duff's Business College in Pittsburgh. She was a homemaker who also worked for several years for Carnegie Tech as a register and recorder. Her husband, Robert Loughman, whom she married March 27, 1938, died January 18, 1997. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two sisters, Gail Fettke and Bethel Salome; and a brother, James Dunn Sellers.

1991 Canon-Mac graduate was varsity wrestler
Mark J. Rothka, 25, of South Fayette Township, formerly of Canonsburg, died Sunday, November 30, 1997, at his home. He was born October 28, 1972, a son of Ronald G. and Mary Toplisek Rothka of Canonsburg. Mr. Rothka was employed as a postal clerk at Eighty Four. He was a 1991 graduate of Canon-McMillan and was a wrestler for the high school varsity team. Mr. Rothka attended DeVry University and was a member of St. Michael's Church in Canonsburg. He also played dartball for the Polaski Club in Washington. Surviving is his wife, Michelle Rush Rothka, of Washington. Also surviving in addition to his parents and wife, are a son, Mark J. Rothka Jr. of Washington; two daughters, Samantha Ellen and Kerrigan Marie Rothka, both of Washington; maternal grandmother, Mary K. Toplisek of Canonsburg; four brothers, Ronald G. Rothka Jr. of Eighty Four, Timothy M. Rothka of New Jersey; John M. Rothka of Muse, and Michael A. Rothka of Canonsburg; four sisters, Mary M. Rothka of Bridgeville, Elizabeth V. Rothka, Teresa M. Rothka and Veronica J. Rothka, all of Canonsburg; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Deceased are his maternal grandfather Michael Toplisek and paternal grandparents Margaret and Joseph Rothka.

Eva A. Rutan
Spent most of her life in Waynesburg area
Eva A. Rutan, 64, of Waynesburg R.D.3, died Saturday, November 29, 1997, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, after suffering a heart attack at her home. She was born December 7, 1932, in Smithfield, a daughter of the late Charles and Ina Brink Temple. Mrs. Rutan had resided in the Waynesburg area for most of her life and had worked at Flushing Shirt Manufacturing, Waynesburg Restaurant and Acme Supermarket. She was Protestant. On November 8, 1952, she married Hershel M. Rutan Sr., who survives. Also surviving are five daughters, Barbara Herrington of Waynesburg, Loretta Brewer of Spraggs, Kim Morris of Waynesburg, Melody Ealy of Claysville and Robin Horton of Hinesville, Ga.; three sons, Hershel Rutan Jr. of Waynesburg, Robert Rutan of Florida and John Rutan Sr. of Waynesburg, R.D.3; 22 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Goldie Dankle of Smithfield and Wilma Rutan of Waynesburg; and one brother, Leroy Temple of Prosperity. Deceased are a sister, Helen Kalbaugh; a half-sister, Ferne Sheets; two brothers, Ernest and David Temple; and a half-brother, Frank Temple.

Delores J. Sapp
Former Girl Scout leader
Delores J. Sapp, 52, of Dilliner, died Friday, November 28, 1997, in Uniontown Hospital. She was born in Dunkard Township, Greene County, a daughter of the late George L. and Goldie Cobb Henderson Sr. She was a member of Interntional House of Prayer in Taylorstown and was a former Girl Scout leader for Troop 3004 in Friendship Hill. Surviving are three sons, Patrick Murphy of Morgantown, W.Va., Robert Sanders of Dilliner and David Sanders of Point Marion; four daughters, Patty Wyland of Dilliner, Kathy Murphy of Cheat Lake, W.Va., Teresa Cole of Dilliner and Jaime Guthrie of Morgantown; three stepchildren, James Sanders Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., John Sanders of Frankfurt, Germany, and Susie Arbogast of Dilliner; 16 grandchildren; two brothers, George Henderson Jr. of Waynesburg and Waler henderson of Carmichaels; and three sisters, her twin, Gloria Cogar of Greensboro, Wilma Graham of Waynesburg and Nelma Stoneking of Cleveland, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews. Deceased is one brother Charles Cobb.

Samuel R. Sawhill
Served with U.S. Marines during WW II
Samuel R. Sawhill, 74, of Joffre, died Sunday, November 30, 1997, in Weirton Medical Center, Weirton, W.Va. He was born April 12, 1923, in McDonald, a son of Frank and Bertha May Alexander. Mr. Sawhill served with the U.S. Marines during World War II. He was a retired employee of Climax Co. of Langeloth. He is survived by his wife Alvera Villina Sawhill. Also surviving are two daughters, Janice Wales of Midway and Cheryl Howell of McDonald; two stepsons, Barry Alvarez of Madison, Wis., and Tony Mark Alvarez of Langeloth; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Sawhill of Washington and Donald Montgomery of DuBois, Pa.; and three sisters, Ruth Bain of Midway, Gertrude Mott of Bulger and Peg Bennett of the state of California. Deceased are one brother; and four sisters.

Thomas H. Sheridan
Former teacher in Burgettstown district
Thomas H. Sheridan, 74, of Sun City Center, Fla., formerly of McDonald, died Thursday, November 27, 1997, in Columbia South Bay Hospital, Sun City Center. He was born November 8, 1923, in Pittsburgh, a son of Leo W. and Dottie Homer Sheridan. Mr. Sheridan earned a bachelor's degree from Waynesburg College and held a master's degree in special education from the University of Pittsburgh. He worked as an elementary, special education and head teacher in Burgettstown Area School District for 36 years before retiring in 1987. Mr. Sheridan served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where he was a past elder, past deacon and past Sunday school teacher. Mr. Sheridan also was a member of McDonald American Legion Post 485, Pennsylvania State Education Association and National Eduction Association. His wife, Marianne Lotte Gruetzner Sheridan, whom he married June 30, 1947, survives. Also surviving are one son, Thomas H. Sheridan of Oldsmar, Fla.; three sisters, Yolanda Kellerman of Upper St. Clair, Rossie Jones of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Dorothy Freese of Riverside, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two sisters, Katherine Truesdale and Jane Winberry. Dorothy K. Simon

Dorothy K. Simon, 80, of Canonsburg, died Saturday, November 29, 1997, in her home. She was born, September 2, 1917, in Parkersburg, W.Va., a daughter of Frank and Grace Pearl Marshall Kester. During WWII, she served as a nurse in the army nurse corps. Before her retirement, Mrs. Simon, worked as a registered nurse at Canonsburg General Hospital. She has been a resident of Canonsburg for the past 45 years. On April 19, 1942, she married Samuel Simon, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Sarita Grace Taub of Torrence, Calif.; and a brother, Donald E. Kester of Houston, Texas. Also deceased are a brother, Byron Kester; and a sister, Katherine Edith Duncan. At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation and all services will be private.

Kenneth Thomas
Antique dealer
Kenneth Thomas, 70, of Monongahela, died Friday, November 28, 1997, in Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was born June 27, 1927 in Monongahela, a son of Nick and Gertrude McCarty Thomas. Mr. Thomas was a veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and also was an antique dealer in the area. He was a member of Transfiguration Church in Monongahela. Surviving are his wife, Fay E. Thomas; three daughters, Terrie Steiner of Monongahela, Kerrie Kent of Chesapeake, Va., and Tammy Hough of Landisburg; one son, Nick Thomas of Monongahela; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Deceased are a brother, William Thomas and a sister, Merle McGovern.

Audrey Lee Wessel
Member of Wright's United Methodist Church, Venetia
Audrey Lee Wessel, 67, of Finleyville, died Sunday, November 30, 1997, at the home of her sister. She was born December 20, 1929, in Finleyville, a daughter of Leroy and Edna Mayfield Price. Mrs. Wessel was a member of Wright's United Methodist Church in Venetia. Her husband, John H. Wessel, died May 23, 1997. Surviving are a son, Craig A. Curdie of Finleyville; a sister, Kathleen Peelor of Whitehall; a brother, Robert Price of Finleyville; four grandchildren, Ronald A., Cherise, Christina E. and Craig A. Curdie II; and one great-grandchild. Also deceased, in addition to her husband, is a son, Ronald L. Curdie, who died May 25, 1997.

Christopher Young
Member of Valley Inn Fire Department
Christopher R. Young, 23, of Little Mingo Road, Finleyville, died Wednesday, November 26, 1997, in Richmond, Ky. He was born December 11, 1973, a son of Rodger and Catherine Marflak Young, who survives, and with whom he resided. Mr. Young graduated from Westley Academy of Upper St. Clair and was a student at Easter Kentucky University in Richmond. He was a member of the Valley Inn Fire Department and the Washington County Fire Fighters Association. Mr. Young received three scholarships from Globe Fire Equipment, Pennsylvania Firefighters Association and Pennsylvania Arson Investigators. He held a brown belt in martial arts with Pennsylvania Karate Academy. Mr. Young was a member and officer of Alpha Phi Sigma Honorary Society in Criminal Justice, a member of Pennsylvania Arson Investigators and a member and public relations officer for the Madison County (Ky.) rescue squad. He also was a member of the Association of Fire Science Technicians and National Association of Fire Investigators. Mr. Young held certifications with American Red Cross First Aid, Kentucky Emergency Medical Technician and National Association of Fire Investigators fire and explosives investigators, and he was certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a brother, Jeffrey Young of the state of California; a sister, Sherrilyn Leaver of Colorado; and several aunts, uncles; cousins; nieces and nephews.

Mary Hannah Travis
Member of West Alexander American Legion Auxiliary
Mary Hannah Travis, 60, of Buffalo Township, died at 10:56 p.m. Thursday, October 30, 1997, in her home following a lengthy illness. She was born December 25, 1936, in West Alexander, a daughter of the late A.B. and Margaret Mahan Danley. Mrs. Travis had lived in the West Alexander area most of her life except for seven years she spent in Clinton, Md. She returned to Washington County in 1995. She was a former member of West Alexander Presbyterian Church and a member of West Alexander American Legion Post 656 Auxiliary. Mrs. Travis was a 1954 graduate of West Alexander High School. She had been employed for the past 10 years as a caretaker and homemaker for Dr. James Wilson Braden, now retired, with whom she made her home. In April 1962, she married James Thomas Travis, who died March 29, 1986. Mrs. Travis was the last of her immediate family. Surviving are two sons, Clyde William Reese Jr. of West Finley and David R. Travis of West Alexander; one daughter, Mary M. "Peggy" Kiger of Washington with whom she also shared her home; and five grandchildren. Deceased is one son, Ross Edward Reese, who died December 31, 1985.

Michael T. Caldwell

Michael T. Caldwell, 21, of Eighty Four, died Monday, September 29, 1997, in Nottingham Township. He was born August 25, 1976, in Washington, a son of Robert E. and Paulette M. Dzubay Caldwell of Eighty Four, who survive. A 1994 graduate of Ringgold High School, Mr. Caldwell was a member of the Olivet United Presbyterian Church of West Elizabeth. An hunter and fisherman, he was formerly employed at Powell's Auto Body Shop in Bentleyville and was currently employed by D.V. Auto Body Shop in Finleyville. Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers, Robert E. "Skip" Caldwell of Ellsworth and Jon E. Caldwell of Eighty Four; his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth E. Withrow Caldwell of Eighty Four; his maternal grandparents, Stephen and Pauline O'Dell Dzubay of Finleyville; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. His paternal grandfather, Edward C. Caldwell, is deceased.

Rudolph A. Sadlek
U.S. Navy veteran of World War II
Rudolph "Rudy" A. Sadlek, 69, of Braden Plan, Clarksville, died at 4:10 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, 1997, at Greene County Memorial Hospital. He was born October 27, 1927, in Mather, a son of Vincent and Mary Kacur Sadlek. Mr. Sadlek worked for 20 years at Plasteel in Washington. He served in the Sea Bee's in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of Filer-Sadlek Post 954 American Legion of Jefferson. He lived most of his life in the Clarksville area and was a member of St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church in Clarksville. His wife of more than 46 years, Dorothy Swaney Sadlek, whom he married October 28, 1950, survives. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one son, Rudolph D. Sadlek of Dry Tavern; one daughter, Sharon M. Dolan of Clarksville; two sisters, Helen Gallagher of Fredericktown and Katherine Bupka of Mather; five grandchildren, Jennifer Sadlek, Jason Sadlek, Shaun Dolan, Shane Dolan and Chad Dolan; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are four brothers, Frank Sadlek, Emil Sadlek, Paul Sadlek and Vincent Sadlek; and two sisters, Millie Basich and Ann Sadlek.

Albert E. Dunn
Worked for McGraw-Edison
Word has been received of the death of Albert E. Dunn, 82, of Dewey, Ariz., who died Sunday, August 17, 1997, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Prescott, Ariz. He was born July 25, 1915, in Washington, to Joseph and Goldie Cox Dunn. Mr. Dunn was a machinest die setter for McGraw-Edison Electric, Canonsburg, retiring in 1957. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War as a supply sergeant. He enjoyed fishing and making furniture in his own wood shop. Mr. Dunn married Betty J. McKahan on September 6, 1942, in Camp Livingston. They moved to Arizona from Pennsylvania 17 years ago, living the past 16 years in Dewey. Surviving are his wife; three sons, Charles Dunn and Joseph Dunn, both of Phoenix, Ariz., and William Dunn of Prescott Valley; a daughter, Elizabeth Amshay of Phoenix; two sisters, Ann Moyer and Jean Spencer, both of Pennsylvania; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Private family services were held.

Edward E. Calhoun Jr.
Was elder at Concord Presbyterian Church
Edward E. Calhoun Jr., 81, of Prosperity, died Thursday, November 20, 1997, in the Greenery, Canonsburg. He was born June 1, 1916, in Bridgeport, W.Va., a son of Edward E. Sr. and Iva M. Coffman Calhoun. Mr. Calhoun was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church of Prosperity, where he was formerly an elder. He graduated from Munhall High School, Pittsburgh, and worked as a salesman for Bennett Auto Supply prior to his retirement in 1978. Mr. Calhoun was a member and past officer of Prosperity Grange 1520. During World War II, he served with Company M, 168th Regiment, 34th Division of the U.S. Army. He remained active in the Army Reserve for 16 years. On November 16, 1951, in Prosperity, he married Elizabeth Nelan, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Edward E. Calhoun III of North Huntingdon, John C. Calhoun of Orange Park, Fla., and William R. Calhoun of Prosperity; one brother, Raymond Calhoun of Pittsburgh; a sister, Rosalie Cutright of Dormont; four grandchildren, Laina Calhoun, Matthew Calhoun, Edward E. Calhoun IV and Sara M. Calhoun; six stepgrandchildren, Christopher and Faith Wilkinson, Mandy and Shelly Wilson and Jill and Theresa Tomasyk; and several nieces and nephews.

Judy Ann Johnson

Judy Ann Johnson, 50, of Route 2, Fairview, W.Va., died Thursday, November 20, 1997, in Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va. She was born June 21, 1947, in Core, W.Va., a daughter of the late Gilbert and Jennie Pawlak Forquer. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Mt. Morris Assembly of God Church. Surviving are her husband, Melvin K. Johnson; two daughters, Connie Siverling of Core and Sherry Franklin of Mt. Morris; six sisters, Ann Russell and Bonnie Forquer, both of Brookhaven, W.Va., Sandy Trickett of Grafton, W.Va., Wanda Tokav and Mary Haught, both of Fairmont and Dorothy Strakal, of New Martinsburg, W.Va.; seven brothers, Jack F. Forquer, Richard Forquer and Don Forquer, all of Core, William Forquer of Morgantown, W.Va., Junior Forquer of Fairmont, Gary Forquer of Wana, W.Va. and Bob Forquer of Rivesville, W.Va.; two granddaughters, Whitney Siverling and Alexis Siverling. Deceased is a granddaughter, Brittney Siverling.

Henry C. McFarland
Decorated vetern was mine supervisor for 23 years
Henry C. McFarland, 75, of Washington, died at 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, 1997, at his home. He was born March 20, 1922, in West Blocton, Ala., son of Henry and Velma Hardy McFarland. Mr. McFarland was a mine supervisor for 23 years for Gateway Coal Co. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, where he served as deacon for 34 years, was Sunday School superintendent, president of the senior choir and chairman of the deacon board. Mr. McFarland served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. He participated in Rome Arno, Northern Appennines and Po Valley, Italy, campaigns. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and a Combat Infantry Badge. Hubert Henry Cooper, 92, of Claysville, formerly of West Alexander R.D.2, died Monday, October 20, 1997, in Humbert Lane Health Care Center, Washington, following a lengthy illness. He was born July 6, 1905, in Morgantown, W.Va., a son of Charles Henry Cooper and Martha Ellen Keefover Cooper Varner. A 1922 graduate of Triadelphia High School, Mr. Cooper was a self-employed farmer. He was also a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Claysville. On September 23, 1927, in Ohio County, W.Va., he married Carolyn McLain Cooper, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Sarah C. Tinkey of Claysville and Martha Brownlee of Washington; a grandson, Michael Glenn Brownlee; and a great-grandson. Deceased are his stepfather, Andrew Joseph Varner; a brother, Charles Cooper; a sister, Sarah Lough; and a half brother, Joseph Varner.

Anna Krupa Drwinga, 75, of Carl Avenue, Eighty Four, formerly of McKees Rocks, died Tuesday, October 21, 1997, in Allegheny General Hospital. She was born October 21, 1922, in Carnegie, a daughter of Andrew and Eva Sirko Krupa. A 1942 graduate of Scott High School, she was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Polish National Catholic Church, Canonsburg. She had been formerly employed at the Jenny Lee Bakery in McKees Rocks for 10 years. Surviving are her husband, Joseph Drwinga; three daughters, Eva Skalyo of Cecil, Helen Drwinga of Tampa, Fla. and Joanne Connolly of Chantilly, Va.; a brother, John Krupa of Carnegie; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Skalyo, Jonathan Skalyo, Jeffrey Skalyo, Katie Connolly and Jesse Connolly. Deceased are four brothers, Mike Krupa, Peter Krupa, Paul Krupa and Anthony Krupa; two sisters, Mary Rabatin and Sophie Krupa; and an infant daughter, Katherine Krupa.

William Alfred Patterson, 85, of 53 South Morris Street, Waynesburg, died at 9 a.m. Saturday, September 20, 1997, at his home. He was in his usual health and died of an apparent heart attack. He was born April 9, 1912, in Rogersville, a son of Hal W. and Elizabeth Cole Patterson. Mr. Patterson lived his entire life in Greene County, and was a member of the Pursley Baptist Church in Oak Forest. Mr. Patterson owned and operated a turkey farm near Oak Forest for several years. For 30 years, he owned and operated Patterson Floor and Wall in Waynesburg. After his retirement, Mr. Patterson owned and maintained several rental properties in Waynesburg. Mr. Patterson was a member of the Waynesburg Masonic Lodge No. 153 F&AM and a former member of Waynesburg Elks Lodge No. 757. He is survived by his wife, Clarice Phillips Patterson, whom he married May 18, 1939; a daughter, Willa Lee Brooks of Waynesburg; a son, Howard "Jack" Patterson of Plymouth, Mich.; two grandsons, James Douglas Patterson and Michael Patterson; and a brother, Arthur L. Patterson of Pine Bank. A sister, Geraldine Hartley, is deceased.

Dorothy Arlene Yaquinto, 69, of Sunnybrook Road, Washington, died at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, September 20, 1997, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born February 18, 1928, in Byesville, Ohio, a daughter of William and Marie Willis Morgan. Mrs. Yaquinto was the owner-operator of Dottie Yaquinto's Beauty Salon in Washington for many years. Mrs. Yaquinto was a 1945 graduate of Washington High School and a member of the Christian Church of North America. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, baking and knitting. On June 13, 1951, she married Samuel F. Yaquinto who survives. Also surviving is one son, Anthony F. Yaquinto of Tampa, Fla.; one daughter, Carolyn A. Sprowls of Washington; two sisters, Claudine Johnstone of Aliquippa and Norma Morgan Cole of Houston; four grandchildren, Michael Anthony Yaquinto, Matthew Vincent Yaquinto, Molly Marie Mace, and Anthony John Mace; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

James W. Brownlee, 61, of 685 North Main Street, Houston, died unexpectedly Tuesday, December 23, 1997, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born July 6, 1936, in Washington, a son of the late James G. and Mary Leoda Brownlee. Mr. Brownlee had lived most of his life in Houston and had been a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg. He had served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the Korean War where he received five Purple Hearts and two Silver Stars. He was a retired self-employed electrician. He was a member of the Catholic Mens Club of St. Patrick Parish, the Marine Corps League of Bethel Park and American Legion Post 902 in Houston. On November 10, 1956, he married Arlene Dami, who died August 15, 1990. Surviving is a son, Randy Brownlee at home; one daughter, Kelly Hoover of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren, Corey and Sara Hoover; three sisters, Margaret Suhay of Washington, Tiny Cummings Claysville and Janet Boardley of Pensacola, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Brownlee made his home with Laverne Schura.

She was born September 19, 1940, in Honolulu, Hawaii, a daughter of Esther Phillips Rizor of Washington and the late Raymond M. Rizor. Miss Rizor graduated from Mt. Alvernia High School of Pittsburgh in 1958 and attend Oklahoma University at Norman and Duquesne University of Pittsburgh. She was an avid reader, movie follower, and card player. Miss Rizor last worked for the Century Plaza Motel of Washington as a desk clerk and had previously been employed at The George Washington. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are two sisters, Nardis R. Hardie of Washington and Gwen R. Hampe of Albuquerque, N. M.; a brother, Thomas D. Rizor of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Currie was a graduate of Grove City High School. Genevieve C. Wolf, 97, of 95 Crest Vue Drive, Washington, died Saturday, November 22, 1997. She was born June 28, 1900, in Washington, a daughter of Frank and Anne Hurlbert Shivers. Mrs. Wolf attended local schools and was a 1920 graduate of Washington High School. In 1920, she married George F. Wolf, who died April 17, 1985. Mrs. Wolf was employed by the former Caldwell's store on Main Street, Washington. She also was the earned-income tax collector and secretary for South Strabane School District. Mrs. Wolf was a member of First Baptist Church, Washington, for more than 75 years. She was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, a descendant of John Howland. Mrs. Wolf was past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 409. Surviving are two sons, William F. and Robert G. Wolf, both of Washington; nine grandchildren, Kristine A., Douglas W., Gary F. and Robert G. Wolf Jr., Carol L. Crawford, Greg A. and Thomas E. Joseph G. Wiszczor Sr., 71, of Canonsburg, died unexpectedly Tuesday, August 26, 1997, at his home. He was born July 7, 1926, in Washington, son of John and Julia Sanak Wiszczor. Mr. Wiszczor lived in Canonsburg most of his life, where he was a member of St. Patrick Parish. He served with the U.S. Army in World War II, and prior to his retirement, he was employed as a winder at the former McGraw- Edison and Cooper Power Systems, Canonsburg. Mr. Wiszczor was a member of VFW Post 191 and White Eagles Society, both of Canonsburg, the Disabled American Veterans Association and Pulaski Literary Athletic Association of Washington and was a social member of North Strabane Township Volunteer Fire Department. On June 6, 1957, he married Frances M. Pasch, who died June 14, 1995. Surviving are a son, Joseph Wiszczor Jr. at home; two daughters, Mariann Wassil of Johnstown and Rosemary Heinauer of Baldwin; five grandchildren, Amy, Kimberly and Joshua Heinauer and Adam and Jacob Wassil; two brothers, Charles Wiszczor and Edward Wiszczor, both of Washington; three sisters, Eleanor Bogdewiecz of Bridgeville, Genevieve Svitek of Canonsburg and Dolores Capra of McDonald; and several nieces and nephews. He attended Garwood Baptist Church and was a member of Richeyville Community Church. Mr. Jenkins also was a member of IOOF No. 51 of Brownsville, the UMWA and Richeyville Fireman Association. Surviving is his wife, Edna "Peggy" Lyons Jenkins, whom he married July 3, 1938. Also surviving are two daughters, Ellen R. Mr. Bordo was a retired teacher in the South Fayette School District and was a wrestling coach there for 25 years. Charles Cox
NASA employee born in Waynesburg
Word has been received on the death of Charles Cox, 71, of Ocoee, Fla., formerly of Waynesburg, who died Wednesday, December 3, 1997. He was born in Waynesburg, a son of Arthur and Reta Rush Cox. In 1944, Mr. Cox joined the U.S. Navy for two years during World War II before joining the Air Force in 1949, serving as a radio operator during the Korean War. After moving to Florida in 1959, he was employed by General Dynamics, a NASA contractor, working on the Mercury and Apollo space programs in Cape Canaveral, Fla., and later worked at General Electric and Martin Marietta in Orlando, before retiring as a supervisor. Following retirement, he was coordinator for the Civil Air Patrol's search and rescue operations in Florida. Surviving are his wife, Glenna Cox, who he married in 1953; two sons, Michael of Willoughby Hills, Ohio, and Patrick of Ocoee, Fla.; a daughter, Debi Kravis of Fort Pierce, Fla.; and a sister, Dolly Krohn of Daytona Beach, Fla.

She was born June 17, 1905, in Pancake, a daughter of Charles and Mary Ann Wyeth Schroeder. Mrs. Emerson was a chef at the former Lou Kairy's Restaurant in Peters Township for 18 years. She was a member of AARP and a former member of Washington Senior Citizens. Surviving are a son, Jack Emerson of Iowa; a daughter, Mary Lou Ryan of Washington; a brother, Lawrence Schroeder of Annapolis, Md.; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Her husband, Jack Emert Emerson, is deceased. Also deceased are two sisters, Edna Evans and Laura Schroeder.

Ralph B. Lewellen
Nemacolin man had spent 52 years in Covington, Ky.
Ralph B. Lewellen, 91, of Haney's Personal Care Home in Rices Landing, died at 4 p.m., Saturday, December 27, 1997, at Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. He was born August 12, 1906, in California, a son of Raymond V. and Lillian Gere Lewellen. On March 22, 1926, he married Mary E. Pitcock Lewellen who died March 17, 1996. Mr. Lewellen spent his early years in Nemacolin working many jobs such as carpenter, motion picture projectionist and mechanic for Nemacolin Mine. In 1929 he left Greene County for Covington, Ky., where he worked as a guard for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. In World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Savannah which escorted President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Yalta Conference in 1945. In Kentucky, Mr. Lewellen was a member of the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church in Covington and the Masonic Lodge in Independence, Ky. In 1981 he returned to Greene County. He is survived by one son, Kenneth E. Lewellen of Ryland Heights., Ky.; one grandson, Frank B. Lewellen of Boise, Ind.; one brother, Frank Lewellen of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Wilda Shaszar of Columbiana, Ohio; three nephews, Thomas Lewellen, Richard Pitcock and Allen Pitcock; and two nieces, Ruth Henderson and Clara Louise Pitcock. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Lee Lewellen, and a brother, Roy Lewellen.

Charles W. Ross, 85, of Greensburg, died Wednesday, December 24, 1997, in Redstone Highlands. He was born August 12, 1912, in Taylorstown, a son of Anna and Clinton Ross. Mr. Ross was an electrical engineer, retiring as manager of systems operations for Allegheny Power Co. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II in the Pacific as a first lieutenant in the Army Signal Corps. Mr. Ross was a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and a member of Claysville Masonic Lodge and Syria Temple of Pittsburgh. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg, where he served as deacon, elder, trustee and volunteer. Surviving are his wife, Marion Lewis Ross; a son, Stephen of Jeannette; a sister, Gertrude Ross of Pittsburgh; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are three sisters, Verla Ross, Erma Risher and Frieda Emeterio.

Allen Foster Ackley, 80, of Manse Street, Washington, died at 8:52 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 1997, in Washington Hospital. He was born on January 20, 1917, in West Finley, a son of Forest Samuel and Cora Smith Ackley. Mr. Ackley was a Protestant. He owned and operated an automobile repair garage for 45 years on Statement Avenue in Washington and had also operated a garage in Nineveh. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater, receiving the American Area Campaign Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. He was also a member of the Claysville American Legion. On March 7, 1969, he married Lucille Elsie Hampe, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Linda Ackley Willis of Washington; three stepsons, Robert Marshman of Washington, William Burke of Westerville, Ohio, and David Alrutz of Claysville; three brothers, Howard Ackley of Claysville, Raymond Ackley of Hadley and Wayne Ackley of Maryland; a sister, Wilma Beabout of Wheeling, W.Va.; three grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Deceased is a stepgrandson, Thomas Marshman; and three sisters, Maribell Ackley, Lorena Horne and a sister who died in infancy.

Surviving are two sons, Frederick Allen of Westland and Robert Allen of McDonald; two daughters, Barbara Porter of Washington, with whom she made her home, and Lorraine Minney of Bridgeville; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and a sister, Ruby Spearman of Harrisburg. Blair Jr. of Rices Landing; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Eleanor Kresevich of Youngwood, Martha Dorsey of Grays Landing, Vivian May of Carmichaels and Cheryl Myers of Smithfield; and two brothers, Gerald Blair of Mineral Ridge, Ohio, and Alfred Blair Jr. of Masontown. Deceased are his father, Alfred Blair Sr.; and his wife, Elizabeth Billek Blair.

Owen Chaney
Former employee of Mobay Chemical Co.
Owen Chaney, 67, of Star Route, New Freeport, died at 8:45 a.m. Monday, December 1, 1997, in Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, W.Va. He was born April 25, 1930, in Fairview, W.Va., a son of Thomas E. and Mary Slider Chaney. Mr. Chaney was a 1948 graduate of Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, Md. He served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. He was a retired employee of Mobay Chemical Co., New Martinsville, W.Va. Mr. Chaney, a resident of New Freeport for the past 38 years, was a member of Grandview United Methodist Church in Garrison and the Jollytown charge choir. His wife, Eleanor Schramm Chaney, whom he married December 12, 1953, survives. Also surviving are two sons, Michael Owen and Edward Allan Chaney, both of New Freeport; three daughters, Patricia Lynn Bates of Jefferson, Nancy Lee Fordyce of New Freeport and Mary Eleanor Kiger of Holbrook; 10 grandchildren, Bobby and Amanda Bates, Sean, Dylan and Jesse Chaney, Erica, Hannah and Mark Fordyce and Joshua and Jeremiah Kiger. Deceased are a granddaughter, Angela Bates; and a brother, Thomas Edward Chaney.

Lloyd R. Manes, 89, of Brookline, formerly of Washington, died Sunday, November 30, 1997. Born May 15, 1908, in Washington, he was a son of Clyde and Minnie Rasel Manes. Mr. Manes was a retired treasury department employee from Gulf Oil. His wife, Mildred Steiner Manes, is deceased. Surviving are three daughters, Lois Murphy, Norma Thomas and Dorothy Henry; a brother, Joseph Manes; a sister, Catherine Griffith; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Michael Moticko
Trinity grad was former employee of LTV Steel
Michael Moticko, 77, Cleveland Road, Washington, died at 5:35 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 1997, in the McMurray Hills Manor Nursing Home. Born November 19, 1920, in Washington County, he was a son of Anna Kopchuck Moticko of Meadow Lands and the late Andrew Moticko. Mr. Moticko was a graduate of Trinity High School and a former employee of LTV Steel. He had served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II and was a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion. Surviving are a daughter, Karen Robertson of Bethel Park; two sisters, Mary Piechnik of Meadow Lands and Elizabeth MacBeth of Washington; a granddaughter, Ashley Robertson; and a niece and four nephews. Deceased are four brothers, William Zlatarich and Paul, John and Andrew Moticko; and a sister, Pauline Russo.

Reino Ristimaki
Lifelong farmer from Coal Center
Reino Ristimaki, 87, of 84 Locust Road, Coal Center, died at 6 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 1997, in Brownsville General Hospital. He was born March 27, 1910, a son of Isaac and Mary Ristimaki. Mr. Ristimaki was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. He was a lifelong farmer and a committeeman for the Agriculture Stabilization Committee. On May 18, 1936, he married Elise Solomon Ristimaki, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Karen J. Ghrist of Coal Center; a son, Ronald R. Ristimaki of Coal Center; a sister, Helia Silander of Beallsville; three grandchildren, Leslie R., Jason L. and Becky Ghrist; and one niece and one nephew. Deceased are two brothers, John and Urho Ristimaki.

Pearl M. Sloboda
Member of First Christian Church, Carmichaels
Pearl M. Sloboda, 86, of Nemacolin, died at 1:25 a.m. Monday, December 1, 1997, at Indiana Hospital, Indiana, Pa. She was born on August 7, 1911, in Phillips, a daughter of Thomas R. and Anna Elizabeth Moore Roderick. Mrs. Sloboda attended Cumberland Township High School in Carmichaels and the St. Jude Hospital School of Nursing in Fullerton, Calif. She lived in Nemacolin most of her life. Mrs. Sloboda was a member of the First Christian Church of Carmichaels, where she was a retired elder. She was also a past president of the Carmichaels Area Women's Civic Club, a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Nemacolin Volunteer Fire Co. and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 299 of Indiana. Mrs. Sloboda was a Past Queen and Protector of the Dames of Malta No. 114, Uniontown and a member of the Degree of Honor No. 44 of Indiana. On October 25, 1930, she married Paul Sloboda in Cumberland, Md., who died February 18, 1991. They were married by the Rev. Harry Eval. Surviving are three daughters, Audrey A. Leyko of Westminster, Calif., and twin daughters, Pearl E. Georgiana of Indiana, and Paula K. Palone of Gooding, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two foster grandchildren; two foster great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Roy Roderick, is deceased.

Robert Smith
GM employee was WWII airplane mechanic
Robert Smith 73, of Spring Hills, Fla., died Friday, November 28, 1997, after a short illness at his home. He was born April 9, 1924, in Canonsburg, a son of Jockey and Lavina Armstrong Smith. Mr. Smith was a retired die setter for General Motors in Dravosburg, retiring in 1981. He served with the U.S. Air Force during WW II as an airplane mechanic. On December 29, 1942, he married Aurelia Weber, who survives. Also surviving are his children Patricia and David L. Ledger of Brehm Road, Washington; one sister, Margaret J. Molinaro of Canonsburg; and nine grandchildren, Tami Jolyn Elewski, Chet Robert Elewski, Ardeth Sean Smith, Kelly Duane Smith, Jennifer Rebecca Smith, Jacqueline Renee Smith, David L. Ledger, Michael J. Ledger and Debra L. Ledger. Deceased is one son, John Robert Smith, who died March 14, 1983; and one brother, John Smith.

Eugene Ratchford Jr.
Monongahela man was Conrail supervisor
Eugene "Bucky" Ratchford Jr., 64, of Driftwood Drive, Monongahela, died Monday, December 1, 1997, in Greene County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Ratchford was born August 12, 1933, in Fergality, the son of the late Eugene Ratchford Sr. and Katherine Matush Ratchford. Mr. Ratchford worked as a supervisor of track for Conrail Railroad for more than 40 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of American Legion Post 949 of Carroll Township, the Masonic Lodge 337 of Monongahela, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also served in the United States Navy. He is survived by his wife, Janet Bickle, whom he married July 25, 1959; a son, Rick G. Ratchford of Raleigh N.C.; a daughter, Sheri D. Hawkins of Roanoke, Va.; five brothers, Pat Ratchford of Altoona, Jake Ratchford of Maryland, Mick Ratchford of Meadville, Harold Ratchford of Dysart and Fred Ratchford of Florida; three sisters, Alice Hale of Altoona, Betty Crossman of Dysart and Yvonne Cuomo of Dysart; and one granddaughter, Hailey C. Hawkins.

Harry W. Gilbert

Harry W. Gilbert Jr., 59, of Hopewell Township, died Saturday, December 27, 1997, in the emergency room of UPMC-Beaver Valley. Born December 17, 1938, in Avella, he was a son of Louise Miller Gilbert of Hopewell Township and the late Harry W. Gilbert Sr. Mr. Gilbert was a retired highlift operator with LTV Steel, Aliquippa Works and a member and past master of Woodlawn Lodge 672 F&AM. Surviving are four sons, Mark Gilbert and William Gilbert, both of McDonald, Harry Gilbert of Butler and Robert Gilbert of Burgettstown; two daughters, Connie Johnson of Sturgen and Janet Gilbert of Canonsburg; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, John Gilbert of Arlington, Texas; three sisters, Joyce Sacco of Midway, Carolyn Schroeffel of Oakdale and Florence Blakely of Greenbelt, Md. Deceased are a daughter, Lorie Gilbert; and two sisters, Margaret Babbs and Nancy Crequillion.

Edward J. Hirosky
Ford Motor Co. employee for 28 years
Edward J. Hirosky, 61, of Clarksville, died Monday, December 29, 1997, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg, following a lengthy illness. He was born June 12, 1936, in Daisytown, a son of the late Edward and Mae Teshorech Hirosky. He was a graduate of Jefferson Morgan High School and was employed 28 years by Ford Motor Co. in Chicago, returning to Clarksville in 1982. Mr. Hirosky was a member of St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church in Clarksville and Eagles Lodge 2499, Clarksville. Surviving are his wife, Jessie Ball Mayersky Hirosky, of Clarksville; five sons, Joseph Mayersky of Sauk Village, Ill., John Hirosky of Crown Point, Ind., James Hirosky of Clarksville, Edward Hirosky of Washington and Mike Hirosky of Marianna; five daughters, Deborah Bauza of Rices Landing, Louanne Duda of Lansing Ill., Cathy Mallack of Alba, Susan Bailey of Canton and Melanie De Maar of Clarksville; three brothers, Stanley Hirosky of Philadelphia, John Hirosky of Houston and David Hirosky of Clarksville; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Deceased is one son, Michael Mayersky.

Everett L. Moore
Former member of Greene Co. Democratic Committee
Everett L. "Ebby" Moore, 66, of Waynesburg, died at 6:36 p.m. Wednesday, October 29, 1997, following a brief illness. He was born March 6, 1931, in Wayne Township, a son of Emma Wise Moore of Waynesburg and the late Ira C. "Hicabud" Moore. A lifelong resident of Greene County, Mr. Moore had been affiliated with the Rolling Meadows Church of God. He was a veteran of the Korean War, where he had served as a private in the U.S. Army. Mr. Moore was a member of the Waynesburg Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 461, the Graysville Knights of Pythias and was a former member of the Greene County Democratic Committee. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and hunting. Mr. Moore was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for 23 years as a truck driver and equipment operator prior to his retirement in 1994. On December 15, 1973, he married Helena Sue Clutter, who survives. Also surviving, in addition to his mother, are two daughters, Diane Kniha and Kathy Moore, both of Waynesburg; two sons, Harry "Bub" Moore of Khedive and George Moore of Washington; three sisters, Catherine Strawn of Durbin, Texas, Helen J. George of Waynesburg and Ilene Tharp of Torrance, Calif.; and eight grandchildren. Deceased is one son, William Stanley Moore.

Douglas B. Amon Jr.
St. Patrick eighth grader
Douglas Brian Amon Jr., 14, of 240 Lincoln Avenue, Canonsburg, died unexpectedly Monday, December 1, 1997, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born September 6, 1983, in Washington, a son of Linda Lee Brown Amon, with whom he made his home, and Douglas Brian Amon, Sr. of Florence, S.C. He lived most of his life in Canonsburg and was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Parish and an eighth grade student in St. Patrick School. He was a Dallas Cowboy fan and was active in Washington Youth Baseball and karate. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are one brother, Maxwell Timothy Amon of Florence S.C.; maternal grandparents, Frank E. and JoAnn Brown Jr. of Washington; his paternal grandfather, Frank Amon, Jr. of Washington; his maternal great-grandmother, Anna Brown of Washington; and paternal great-grandfather, Frank Amon Sr. of Washington; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

J. Howard Barnes
Engineer with Westinghouse
J. Howard Barnes, 80, formerly of Cecil Township and Mt. Lebanon, died Tuesday, December 2, 1997, at the Manor Care in McMurray following an extended illness. He was born January 20, 1917, in Cecil Township, a son of Lee Bernard and Margaret Laing Barnes. Mr. Barnes was a member of the Cecil Christian Missionary Alliance. He was a graduate of Cecil High School and Carnegie Tech. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in North Africa and Italy, and with the 601 Tank Destroyer Battalion and was president of its association and chairman of its 1989 reunion. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Westinghouse Corp. as a senior electrical engineer. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 76 in Pittsburgh. Surviving are one brother, Robert H. Barnes of Cecil; one sister, Edna Kelly of Washington; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Barnes was planning to marry Patricia H. Dailer of Wheeling, W.Va. Deceased are two sisters, Mabel Fasani and Helen Griffith; and four brothers, William, Clyde, Lee and David Barnes.

Pearl C. Batson

Pearl C. Tarr Batson, 91, of Washington, died Tuesday, December 2, 1997, in her home. She was born January 29, 1906, in Wolfdale, a daughter of William and Rosa Reed Tarr. Mrs. Batson was a member of Bethel United Presbyterian Church. She attended Washington schools and was a homemaker. On September 1, 1922, in Wellsburg, W.Va., she married F.M. "Shorty" Batson, who died October 22, 1966. Surviving are a daughter, Gayle L. Barr of Washington; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Also deceased are a son, Ronald R. Batson; a daughter, Billie Piccirillo; four brothers, Clint, Clifford, Clyde and Harold Batson; and six sisters, Bertha Baker, Elsie Tarr, Alberta Foor, Freda McGlumphy, Verna Coles and Ethel Byers.

Charles Edward Bell

Charles Edward Bell, 62, of Washington, died Monday, December 1, 1997, in Washington Hospital. He was born November 3, 1935, in Washington, a son of Joseph and Margaret Jane Clemens Bell. He was employed by Washington Steel Co. as a steel worker and was a member of the United Steelworkers. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Washington, and was very active in the Salvation Army. On March 29, 1967, he married Evelyn Doman Randolph, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Charles A. Bell of North Canton, Ohio, Kenneth M. Bell of Washington and Howard R. Randolph Jr. of Washington; a daughter, Sharon L. Sharp of Rhode Island; three grandchildren, Michele Davignon, Howard and David Sharp; two brothers, John Albert Bell and Tony Lee Bell of Washington; six sisters, Helen Virginia Morris, Anna Mae Allen, Betty Jane Fisher, all of Washington, Christina Eva Valentine, of Rogersville, Ohio, Eva Marina Kelley of Washington and Mary Elizabeth Wesley of Columbus, Ga. Deceased are two brothers, Joseph Leroy Bell and Harry Bell.

William A. Deyell

Word has been received of the death of William A. Deyell, 67, of 183 Fairmount Avenue, Jamestown, N.Y., who died at 8:52 p.m. November 18, 1997, in WCA Hospital, Jamestown. A Jamestown resident the past 40 years, he was born June 14, 1930, in Washington, a son of Robert A. and Sarah Jane Patterson Deyell. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Jamestown Metal Corp. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving in the U.S. Air Force; was a member of the International Association of Machinists Lodge 2105; and a member of American Legion Post 175 of Washington. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Bane Deyell, whom he married August 14, 1957; three sons, Robert A., William E. and Donald L. Deyell; two daughters, Barbara Jane and Elizabeth G. Deyell; five grandchildren, Christopher, Natalie, Shantell, Bridgitt and Kaitlyn Grace Deyell; three sisters, Kathryn and Virginia Sharder and Marilyn Rogers, all of Washington; and two brothers, John N. Deyell of Washington and Melvin Deyell of Jamestown. Deceased are three sisters, Sarah Joyce and Mary Jane Deyell and Ethel Jean Gray; and four brothers, Leslie, Patrick, Henry James and Robert A. Deyell Jr. Burial was in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Jamestown.

James R. Huffman
Retired Washington Steel foreman was veteran
James Richard Huffman, 78, of Washington, died Monday, December 1, 1997, in his home. He was born October 13, 1919, in Waynesburg, son of Joseph and Nellie Dunn Huffman. He was a foreman at Washington Steel Corp., retiring in 1983. He was a graduate of Washington High School and served with the U.S. Navy in World War II. On March 6, 1942, he married Florence Mary Switzer, who survives. Also surviving are one son, David V. Huffman of Denver; one daughter, Paula Jo Huffman of Encinadas Calif.; four sisters, McClese Ermacoff, Betty Ramsey, and Patty Huffman, all of Washington and JoAnn Musto of Somerset; and a grandson, Michael Adam Huffman. Deceased is one brother, Joseph Huffman. At the request of the deceased, a private burial will be held at the Washington Cemetery.

Bertha Marie Kline
Head nurse of Mayview State Hospital
Bertha "Betty" Marie Kline, 85, of Bethel Park, died Tuesday, December 2, 1997. She was the former assistant superintendent of Mayview State Hospital and worked there as head nurse. She was later employed by the Methodist Home, known as Asbury Heights Nursing Home, Mt. Lebanon; She graduated from Schenley High School, Pittsburgh, and St. Francis School of Nursing School of Pittsburgh. Mrs. Kline was a member of the St. Thomas More Church, Bethel Park. Mrs. Kline was married to Dr. Bernard E. Kline, who preceded her in death leaving her with nine children, the youngest 2 weeks old, and the oldest 15 years old. Surviving three daughters, Eleanor Kulikowski, Gretchen Cooley and Suzanne Varley; five sons, Frederick, Joel, Eric, Matthew and Dr. Ernest Kline; 23 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Deceased is a son, David J. Kline.

Michelle D. Kopko Loughman, 43, of West Alexander, died Tuesday, December 2, 1997, in the Manor Care Nursing Home in McMurray following a 10-month illness. She was born January 25, 1954, in Washington, a daughter of Leo M. Kopko and Alice Napierkowski Kopko. She was employed in quality control of Superior Valve Co. for 24 years. She was a member of Holy Trinity National Catholic Church. She was a 1971 graduate of Washington High School. On August 3, 1974, she married George W. Loughman Jr., who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Joshua M. and Jason M. Loughman, both at home; one brother, Michael J. Kopko of Washington; and two sisters, Dawna Kopko of Cleveland, Ohio, and Julie Kopko of Pittsburgh; and two nieces.

Robert C. Wilkinson
Navy deep sea diver
Robert C. Wilkinson, 69, of Poplar Street, Ellsworth, died 9 a.m. Tuesday, December 2, 1997, at Jefferson Medical Center. He was born October 6, 1928, in Nanty Glo, a son of John and Elizabeth Pasko Wilkinson. He was a deep sea diver with the Navy for 20 years, retiring in 1965, Mr. Wilkinson became a U.S. Postal worker in Middleburg, Ohio, for 20 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Independent Club, Lithuanian Club and Pensioners Club, all of Bentleyville. Surviving are three brothers, Donald and John Wilkinson, both of Ellsworth, and Clair Wilkinson of Vintondale. Deceased are his wife, Carmella Fillippo Wilkinson; and one brother, Richard Wilkinson.

Jeremy Roy Johnson
Veterinary technician who enjoyed outdoors
Jeremy Roy Johnson, 20, of 2200 Henderson Avenue, Washington, formerly of Banksville, died at 7:55 a.m. Friday, October 31, 1997, in his residence. He was born September 22, 1977, in Pittsburgh, a son of Roy E. and Therese Dobrowolski Johnson. He was a veterinary technician who enjoyed the outdoors and hunting. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are one brother, Michael Meredith; a paternal grandmother, Doris Johnson; and a maternal grandmother, Alfreda Dobrowolski, Deceased is a grandfather.

Wilbert Donaldson Jr.

Wilbert James "Corky" "Don" Donaldson Jr., 56, of 104 Wildwood Drive, Butler, died Tuesday, December 2, 1997, at his residence. He was born July 28, 1941, in Washington, a son of the late Wilbert James "Wib" and Minnie Ruth Brown Donaldson. Mr. Donaldson retired from the 99th ARCOM of Oakdale, where he was commander of various transportation units over his 30-year career. He was Presbyterian and was self-employed in the oil and gas leasing business for 15 years. Mr. Donaldson taught geography from 1995-97 at the Cranberry campus of Butler County Community College; was a photographer for the Penn Township Fire Department; was a member of the Butler Country Club; and was formerly Butler County Junior Man of the Year. He graduated from Trinity High School in 1959, earned a bachelor's degree in business from Pennsylvania State University, and a master's degree in geography and regional planning from California University of Pennsylvania. Surviving are his wife, Loretta Kidd Donaldson, whom he married October 31, 1992; a daughter, Ann Marie Donaldson of Devon; a son, Paul James Donaldson of Butler; two stepsons, Kenneth Scott Snyder of Annandale, Va., and Timothy Patrick Snyder of Titusville; one granddaughter; and one stepgrandchild. Deceased are his first wife, Katherine Eileen Martin, whom he married March 22, 1964; a sister; and a grandson.
